Happy New Year! As I pack my bags for the second Butters family ski trip, it occurs to me that I never did tell you all how we faired on the first. Loyal readers may remember we went to Austria to test the skills we’d all honed at SNO!zone in Castleford. The holiday was great – beautiful scenery, family time from dawn ‘til dusk and fresh air galore. Before we went I had one wish – that we all came back in one piece. And we did… well almost. There was the small matter of Isobel’s split lip, sustained as she sucked on a metal balcony in sub zero temperatures. I think I can safely say neither she nor her sister will make that mistake again. We have since compiled a list of blindingly obvious things you shouldn’t do. To keep spirits high this January, we have a great feature on the best winter parties. As ever, there are some super competitions including the chance to win £50 towards a Gymboree Party, some great birthday gifts and tickets to an extremely and absolutely must see show. Finally, in other news, Father Christmas didn’t bring us the expected baby guinea pigs – much to my relief but Eliza’s disappointment. It turned out Hannah Montana Butters had simply overindulged over the festive period, and looking in the mirror she’s not the only one. I shall be joining my furry friend in a spot of New Year abstinence. Anyone for a carrot?

What’s NEW… Mini Movers at NORTHERN BALLET Turning up for a pre-school class at the Northern Ballet is something of a thrill. The new building in Leeds City Centre towers over Quarry Hill and invites you in with bright seating and an even brighter welcome from the class leader Ann-Marie. Today, she’s teaching 7 children how to be snakes, how to jump like a Jack in the Box and how to enjoy movement. This is Mini Movers – the entry level class for children at this prestigious ballet company. “We want local children to feel they can be part of Northern Ballet from a young age,”says Hannah Kirkpatrick who is the Academy Manager. “Our training is specific to the company, so a lot of the things we work on with the Mini Movers, are tiny, tiny introductions to the training they’ll get if they stay with us.” The class is aimed at children from 2 years old. From here they move to the Creative Movement sessions which introduce basic ballet positions. Then children can begin Pre-Ballet classes. If children stay with the programme, they’ll be assessed at the age of 10 to see if they have the talent for a career in dance. But at Mini Mover stage, it’s simply about having fun. “When they’re doing jumps, Ann-Marie will ask the children to pretend to be toast popping out of a toaster,”says Hannah. “They don’t know they’re practicing a ballet position. They’re just having fun!” The city centre location is proving popular with parents. There’s parking at nearby Quarry Hill and in the shadow of the Northern Ballet building is the central Bus Station. The bright new studios and exciting atmosphere are well worth the trip into town. “I’m so excited to see the children in today’s Mini Movers class, move through the Northern Ballet programme,”says Hannah. “Who knows, one of these snakes, may be a star of tomorrow!” Mini Movers classes are on a Thursday morning, with plans for a Saturday session in 2011. Creative Movement and Pre-Ballet classes run on a Saturday. Come along to an OPEN DAY on Saturday 22nd January from 11am and try a FREE taster session. For more, look at www.northernballet.com
Drop in to TINY SIGNERS Committing to a weekly class with your baby can be difficult, especially if you’re back at work. That’s why Babies Can Sign is offering parents a more flexible option. When Karen Capitano sets out mats in the side room at Horsforth Children’s Centre, she’s not sure how many mums will make Tiny Signers drop in session, but they’ll all be welcome. These classes are run by Babies Can Sign to give busy parents the chance to pick and choose when to turn up. There’s no commitment, no up front payment. Parents simply pay as they go. At today’s class, there are children from 6 months old, through to 2 ½ years. It means Karen has to make sure the class is interesting to them all. “It’s not just about the signing,”says Karen. “It’s about the singing, the stories we read, the fun we have together. And as we know, when children are having fun, they learn.” The sessions are open to babies and toddlers and last about an hour. Lydia Wharf has been bringing her daughter 19 month old Paloma to Babies Can Sign classes since she was a baby. Now she has 6 month old Gigi as well, Tiny Signers is perfect. “It’s a session that both my daughters can do together, and I can do with them,”says Lydia. “Paloma can do a few signs – bird, hello, goodbye and nappy. That’s really satisfying.” Tiny Signers Drop In sessions are held in Horsforth and Yeadon. Sessions are £3.50 and after you’ve been along to 10 Tiny Signers classes, you get a class free. www.tinysigners.co.uk • 07742 296 160

Zhara Armstong is giggling as she unpacks a gang of Grinches from a delivery box at the back of Wetherby’s newest toy shop, Treasures.
I
T’S hard to hold back the laughter when you’re surrounded by so much fun. From make believe kitchens and mythical creatures to magical dress up outfits, this is shopping with a smile. Zhara opened Treasures in September last year with the aim of bringing a touch of magic to toy shopping. It’s the perfect antidote to the soul-less out of town toy stores, with glum faced staff less than happy to help. At Treasures, Zhara wants everyone to leave with a smile. “I want people to come in to touch and play with our toys,”says Zhara. “It’s all about creating a wonderful experience. A lot of people comment on the space in the shop and how easy it is to bring in a pram. Parents like the fact there’s lots to keep the children entertained while they browse.” The floor is covered with puzzles to play with, there’s a mini shopping trolley for your little one to fill, and every so often a toy train begins its journey around the store. But as we face a year of cut back and belt tightening, does Zhara worry about her new business in 2011? “We’re not asking people to come in and spend a fortune. We have a broad range of products which are pocket money toys or weekend treats. That’s what we do really well.” Zhara’s children – Finn and Niamh – are delighted with their mum’s new business. There are certain perks attached to owning a toy store, but there are strict rules, as Zhara explains. “Finn loves the Star Wars products and Niamh loves the beautiful dressing up clothes, as well as the Melissa and Doug craft sets. However, they earn pocket money and anything they take from Treasures leaves in a bag with a receipt. They’ve learnt quickly to treat this as a business.” And this is a family business that everyone’s playing a part in. From fact finding trips to toy stores across the North, to rigorous product testing, Treasures belongs to all the Armstrong family. In fact six year old Finn is finding his feet at the store’s youngest staff member. “I saw him telling a little boy about the Thomas trains,”says Zhara. “It’s great to see his enthusiasm and he takes every opportunity to show people around. He’s a great salesman!” Treasures is already becoming known not just for great toys, but also for its events calendar. Last year the store played host to witches and wizards, a children’s author and even Santa stopped by. This year there’s talk of Merlin the Wizard visiting in February and more author signings. Zhara hopes these dates for your diary mean Treasures is more than a traditional toy shop. “I keep thinking, if we are enjoying it this much,”reflects Zhara, “then I hope the people who come into the shop get a sense of that magic.” Treasures is based on High Street, Wetherby and is open Monday – Friday from 9.30am – 5pm, and on Saturday from 9am – 5pm. FIRST AID
The facts YOU need to know… What would you do if your child was choking? Would you know how to treat a burn to your toddler? Sarah Butters reports on a Leeds company running first aid courses for parents.

When Jamie Dickinson’s son Ben fell and cut his head, she knew it wasn’t a serious injury. Just a few months earlier Jamie from Adel had joined some friends at a First Aid course for parents run by Underwood Training. There, she’d been told how to treat a head injury, and how to monitor her little boy. “Before, I would have panicked with all the blood, but I was confident I knew the signs to look for.” The two hour course Jamie attended was run by Leeds based Helen Underwood. Helen runs first aid training for businesses, schools, nurseries and child-minders. The parent first aid sessions are proving increasingly popular with mums and dads looking for peace of mind. “The fear of most parents is, if something happens, what would I do?”says Helen. “Our children are precious and we want to know how to look after them. If, god forbid, something does happen, I think every parent’s nightmare is not knowing what to do.” The course takes a look at the most common causes of parental concern and focuses on children from newborn to school age. Helen looks at the treatment of burns, what to do if your child is choking and when to worry about a bump on the head or a high temperature. It’s the sort of information you hope you’ll never need, but need to know.
“We give really practical advice,”says Helen. “For instance, if you use a bib with sleeves, don’t put it over the top of the reins in your child’s high chair. If you do, you can’t get them out quickly to deal with any choking incident.” With the help of a mannequin, Helen shows parents how to carry out effective CPR on a toddler and how to stop a child choking. For the mums who joined Jamie on the course, the advice and information from Helen has given them the peace of mind they were looking for. “It’s given me confidence,”says
Louise Bates from Moortown. “Helen gave us lots of really practical tips and it’s run in an environment where I felt I could ask questions.” Helen and her team can either bring the course to your home, or hold a session at Underwood Training’s centre in Headingley. She says seeing parents leave with new skills and new confidence is fantastic. “I love sharing the knowledge I have,”says Helen, “We’re giving people real life saving skills which can make a massive difference to them and their family.”
Underwood Training’s Parent Checklist… CHOKING Take a look in your child’s mouth. Can you see the obstruction? If you can, clear it. If you can’t, DON’T poke around. Use gravity and some firm taps on the shoulder blades to clear the blockage. BUMPED HEADS Apply a cold compress to decrease swelling. Watch for changes in behaviour, or drowsiness. If you are concerned, take them to Children’s Accident and Emergency at Leeds General Infirmary. MINOR BURNS Expose the burn to cool water for 10 minutes. If your child won’t let you put the burn under the tap, soak a non fluffy cloth in cool water and apply.

PAINT A POT
Pots 2 Go, Montpellier Parade, Harrogate • 01423 524 797 • www.pots2go.co.uk Say ‘birthday party’ and you probably think of overexcited children and lots of noise. Not at Pots 2 Go. There was no lack of excitement on the afternoon of Isobel’s 7th birthday party, but it was all focused on getting creative. The guests, who spanned in age from 4 to 11, made plenty of noise as they picked a piece of pottery from the huge range. For the birthday girl, it was a horse shaped trinket box. For her 11 year old cousin Millie, it was a name plaque. Not to be left out, I chose a coffee mug. But silence fell over Pots 2 Go as the aprons went on. Actually, it was hard to get a word out of any of Isobel’s 12 party guests as the painting began. Margaret Brennan owns Pots 2 Go and says the parties are great fun. “We love the fact that the children have fun and are creative. Sometimes you can cut the concentration in the room with a knife! A common theme to the parties is the quietness when the children are painting. The parents are often amazed.â€? And amazed I was. The concerns I had about it being a party too young for my 11 year old niece and too old for my 4 year old daughter were silenced by the silence! Each took time to be creative, speaking only to get advice from their neighbour about their artwork. Margaret says she enjoys hosting the parties. “We recently had a group of 7 year old boys in, who painted boxes for their mums. The parents were really shocked IES’ when they came in to collect their FAMILEW child. It’s perfect for school ages REVI children – both boys and girls. How to get the
Birth YOU Want‌ A shortage of midwives and health visitors means mums-to-be are now looking to private practitioners to help them through pregnancy and birth. Families Leeds looks at the support on offer to pregnant mums here in Yorkshire.
LAZY DAISY Amanda Bryant is a mum of two from the Wharf Valley. She runs Daisy Birthing classes across West and North Yorkshire. These are weekly antenatal sessions which aim to give parents-to-be all the tools needed to have the birth of your choice.
What does Lazy Daisy offer? “Daisy Birthing is a relaxed birth education programme for all mums-to-be. We use very gentle movement, breathing techniques and affirmations to help a woman understand the physiology of birth, inspiring them to feel confident and in control. When my son arrived nine weeks early, I was completely unprepared, both physically and emotionally. The experience made me anxious about another pregnancy. When I did fall pregnant again, I searched for antenatal classes to give me focus, ease my anxieties and put me in control and I couldn’t find what I was looking for. That’s why I decided to train as a Lazy Daisy Birth Educator and Mentor. I want to offer mums-to-be an enjoyable, intimate class that focuses on building birth confidence.
Why do you think parents to be are turning to classes like yours?

“Choosing a service outside of the NHS has definitely become more popular. There’s no longer the central funding for a huge variety of classes. Birth preparation has to be a personal choice and for many the traditional Parentcraft classes don’t fit the bill. Daisy Birthing provides a real solution – more holistic and movement based than the alternatives, and still very affordable. We are here to complement the overstretched NHS birthing services and not to replace or undermine them.â€? Amanda runs weekly Daisy Birthing session in Ilkey, Otley and Harrogate. Classes run for 6 weeks and you can secure a reduced rate of ÂŁ40 if you book in January. Private couples workshops are also available. For more information contact Amanda on 0845 465 0925 or amanda@lazydaisybirthing.co.uk www.thelazydaisychain.co.uk
YORKSHIRE STORKS A group of independent midwives providing personal support to mums-to-be across Yorkshire. While all trained within the NHS, the Yorkshire Storks work independently to build deep relationships with the women in their care. They specialise in Home Birthing.
What can Yorkshire Storks offer? “As independent midwives, we have the luxury of time, and few enough clients to help every woman in our care to get the birth they hope for. With so many women to care for, it’s difficult for any NHS maternity service to do this. Before the birth we talk to you about your birthing options, give home based antenatal care and we’re your link with NHS health care professionals. At the birth we’ll be there to care and support you through labour and during the first hours of your baby’s life. Post natal care includes regular visits for 6 weeks after birth including breast feeding support.
At what stage do parents call you? “Some clients contact us at the beginning of their first pregnancy. Others seek us out in subsequent pregnancies, especially if their first experience has left them traumatised or disappointed. Mums can often feel they let themselves or their baby down through lack of preparation. Some women come to us late in the pregnancy when, for a variety of reasons, they’re told their birth options have been reduced. We have the time to fully explore the issues, instead of accepting a decision made by the NHS. Finally, we have been contacted by women in labour who have found out at the last minute that their local home birthing service has been withdrawn. It’s never too late to get in touch!â€? Yorkshire Storks offers a full birth support package, as well as advice on individual aspects of pregnancy and birth, including birth planning, post natal advice and breastfeeding counselling. MOTHER NUTURE DOULAS Birthing without a Doula has been compared to planning a holiday in a foreign country without a local guide. Without support, you’ll still give birth, but like a tour guide who knows the area, speaks the language and has some useful local tips, a Doula may make the birthing experience more positive and memorable. Local mums, Rachel Cline, Emma Tonlinson and Julia Parry set up Mother Nurture Doulas back in 2008 to offer mums-to-be here in Leeds a guide through pregnancy and birth.
Why do woman choose Doula support? “Many women are frightened about the process of labour and birth and want someone with experience to walk them through it. Most women want to get to know the midwife who will attend their birth, but that’s not possible in the modern day NHS. It takes a huge fear away knowing that someone who knows what you and your partner want will be there. We find that first time fathers are so grateful for our support, especially if the labour goes on for days.
Have you seen an increase in demand for Doula support? “Last year was very busy. There’s been a baby boom and that’s had an impact on maternity services in Leeds. There are now more Doulas working locally and as awareness grows, so does demand. Mother Nuture Doulas offer support before during and after birth. Treating my daughter’s ezcema
helped me find a NEW CAREER! It’s estimated that as many as 20% of children suffer from eczema at some point and many are treated with steroids. Leeds mum Ruth Goodwin is trying an alternative with some really positive results.
there’s an Aloe Vera Gelly and a Propolis cream to reduce itching and moisturise as it heals. To wash, she uses Aloe Liquid Soap. The last product I have introduced Lauren to is the Aloe Drinking Gel. She was reluctant as it has an acquired taste but mixed with a tiny bit of juice, she now drinks 30mls every morning.
I
CAN VIVIDLY REMEMBER not wanting to go to school when I was eight years old. My skin was so sore and unsightly and all I wanted to do was hide away and scratch in peace. The satisfaction is immense for all of thirty seconds before the pain kicks in. I was prescribed steroid creams, and whilst the symptoms were relieved temporarily they left their mark long term. I have ‘older’ and ‘thinner’ skin on my hands than elsewhere on my body. When my daughter, Lauren, developed eczema as a toddler I began the search for natural products to relieve it. Four years, and many, many products later her eczema is under control and Lauren is finally proud of her skin. In April of this year, we came across a range of natural, nutritional health products, all herbicide, pesticide and additive free. All based on the ‘medicine plant’ Aloe Vera, they aim to soothe, moisturise, revitalise, and nourish both internal and external skin – the epithelial tissue. Eczema is an inflammation of the skin, with blisters and weeping, chronic dryness, red thickened patches all being potential symptoms, and it’s invariably very, very itchy. It was the itching that used to drive Lauren to scratching in the night until her skin bled. Aloe Vera has anti ‘itch’ and anti-bacterial properties and all the products can be applied as often as needed with NO side effects. Often the continued, regular use of them means that steroid creams are no longer necessary. Instead Lauren uses a combination of Forever Living products which keep her condition under control. For the dry patches,

The beauty of drinking the gel and using the creams together is that it helps to provide nourishment to newly forming skin cells at the base of the epidermis. We are literally soothing the skin on the inside and outside – a two pronged attack that most definitely has the desired results. We did find that Lauren’s skin got a little worse before it started to get better. Often called a ‘healing crisis’, it’s when the damaged skin is being pushed up to the surface by deeper layers of healing skin. It means the products are working, and a few weeks later we were rewarded with calmer, smoother skin. I now have a happy, healthy, smiling little girl and I’m so passionate about the products that helped her, I’ve become a Forever Living distributor. I hope I can help other parents find a steroid free solution to their child’s suffering.
For information and advice on the Forever Living Products range of natural, nutritional health products please contact Ruth Goodwin on 0777 2613 786.

Families Leeds SHOE CLINIC Do hand me downs harm your child’s feet? How often should you visit your local shoe shop? Maria Atkinson from the award winning shoe retailer Hopscotch gives some advice to keep you on your toes.
Children need to have their feet measured when they start to pull themselves up and take a few steps with a bit of support. At this stage, children are still crawling so a soft, flexible pre-walking shoe allows their toes and feet to develop while giving them the protection they need. Your child needs to have been walking confidently for a month before being fitted for his first proper shoe. These have a firmer sole designed for just walking rather than walking and crawling.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I BRING MY CHILD TO GET THEIR FEET CHECKED? Up until about the age of 3, you should take your child to have their shoes checked and feet measured every 4 to 8 weeks. They won’t need new shoes every time! However, children’s feet grow in spurts and they may stay the same for a while and then suddenly grow a full size. Regular checks mean when that growth spurt happens, shoes are replaced before they damage your child’s feet. As your child gets older, the growth slows down so you don’t need such regular checks. Every 8 to 12 weeks is a good guide.
ARE CROCS AND UGG TYPE BOOTS BAD FOR FEET? THEY DON'T SEEM TO OFFER MUCH SUPPORT. Both Crocs and Ugg boots have their benefits in different ways. Crocs are a great shoe to wear in the summer as they allow the foot to breathe and air to circulate. However, they don’t have a firm hold on the foot so they shouldn’t be worn all the time. As a casual beach and summer shoe, they are fab. Ugg boots are made from a natural Sheepskin material which allows feet to breathe, staying warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The soft material means they allow the feet to develop and grow naturally. Genuine UGG boots do have a good heel support to stop the feet from rolling inwards or outwards. Cheaper copies don’t offer that same support. Hopscotch has trained fitters at stores in Chapel Allerton, Wetherby, Horsforth, Harrogate and Ripon. www.hopscotch-shoes.co.uk
Your little one’s chance to dance! Photo Martin Bell
WHEN SHOULD I BRING MY CHILD TO GET THEIR FEET MEASURED?
IS IT WORTH SAVING THE SHOES WORN BY MY OLDER SON FOR USE BY MY YOUNGER CHILD? Every foot is different so it is never a good idea to pass shoes on to a younger child no matter how tempting it might be. As your older child has worn the shoes first, they will have softened and moulded to the shape of their feet. These shoes won’t then give the support and fit needed for your younger child.
Movement, music, friends and fun – Northern Ballet’s Early Childhood classes bring children together through the excitement of dance. We’ve weekly classes for tiny tots to energetic eight year olds: Mini-movers (tots & parents), Creative Movement (ages 3-4 & 4-6) and Pre-Ballet (ages 6-8).

Does this photo bring back any memories? If it does, then you may be able to help Richmond House celebrate its 75th anniversary. They’re appealing to former pupils to send in their memories as part of the celebrations. The Headingley based prep school first opened its doors in 1935 with just 24 pupils. Today 240 pupils are at Richmond House but the original building is still an integral part of the school.
