14 Mothers’ Day GIFTS 15 Schools Out! 16 So you want to appeal… Is it worth fighting your primary school place?
Welcome back… I have come to the conclusion that I’m not a terribly good mum. Take last week for instance. I forgot to pick up my 7 year old daughter from school, because I was busy writing my Yorkshire Life Blog… about poor parenting. It forced me to think about all the things I do wrong while trying to raise my two girls. I let them eat too many sweets and watch too much television. I didn’t get their eyes tested at 3 years old, or breastfeed them for 6 months. I don’t make them clear their plates at dinner time, and often let them have pudding when they’ve not had their 5 a day. Sometimes I don’t have Calpol in the house and I once forgot to be the tooth fairy. I tell them I’m on the toilet when I’m answering work emails and I’ve never read Gina Ford. In fact, I burnt her book. I missed my daughter’s first swimming gala because I was at a Michael Bublé concert and I can’t French plait hair. And I shout. A lot. Sometimes about things that really don’t matter, but I’m tired and grumpy and usually really sorry afterwards. So I decided to sit down with the girls and ask them what they think. Am I the worst mum in the world? “No,” said Isobel. “You’re definitely not the worst. I once saw a story on the news about a mummy who left her children at home to go on holiday. She was the worst.” Super. With that ‘praise’ ringing in my ears I turn to Eliza. “You’re the best mummy, because you’re MY mummy.” And there it is. It’s that simple. It made me realise that no matter how much you think you do wrong, your kids will always love you. You don’t have to be perfect, you just have to do your best. Because in your house, to your kids, you are the best mum in the world… even when the tooth fairy doesn’t visit. So to all you hard working, self-sacrificing, under appreciated, much loved mums out there beating yourselves up because you work too hard or shout too much, know this. You’re doing a great job, and even if they forget to say it sometimes, they love you very much.

Families NEWS Children’s centres under review Leeds’ 58 Children’s Centres are being reviewed to see which are providing value for money. The centres which support parents across Leeds, will be hit by council cuts, and nationally 250 are threatened with closure. However Anne Kearsley from Leeds City Council’s Early Years Service says she wants to reassure families there’s a commitment to children’s services. “We are looking carefully to see each centre is run and managed to offer value for money,” Anne told Families Leeds. “There may not be 58 centres in 15 months, but all the services will still be there. There’s no intention NOT to fund Children’s Centres, they’ll just be funded and managed differently.” The review will look at merging some centres and consider private investment.

Claire Sparrow is about to put eight mums through a rigorous post natal workout at the Leeds Pilates Place. As the eight babies take their places in the front row, out come balls and bands and the session begins. Mum of two Claire has been running sessions like this for six years but has only recently moved into this light, bright, well equipped studio in Kirkstall. Today the mums are here to take back control of their bodies and Claire is more than happy to help them take the first steps. “The second you make a difference to someone’s posture, you make a difference to their self esteem and confidence, Claire says. “When you care for a baby, you bring your posture forward – feeding, lifting. We work on lengthening and opening you out. Automatically you feel better. Claire was encouraged to begin working with mums after the birth of her first child. As a trained dancer passionate about pilates, she knew the benefits of exercise, but felt there were few classes supporting mums in pregnancy and after birth. Her NCT friends promised to come to her first class – a pram pushing session in Roundhay Park – and she hasn’t looked back. That Pramercise class is still going strong today, but now Claire has thrown herself into helping mums learn about the power of pilates. But she’s knows how precious time is when you have a newborn. “I know in the time the mummies give me, they are getting the maximum physical benefit. They’re getting relaxation, support with posture work, strengthening in the key areas. Babies are light when they’re born but they get heavier, and we have to build up our strength! Claire’s classes work to repair the body after childbirth, working on the stretched stomach muscles, the pelvic floor and the core strength. For most of the 55 minute session, the babies are happy to watch their mums at work, and there’s a relaxed response to the odd demand for food. But, Claire says, a baby in need is not an excuse to relax. “If baby needs a feed, I give mum a cushion for good posture and a ball to work on their pelvic floor. They’ve come for an hour of exercise and it’s not their fault their baby is hungry. But it’s not an excuse to slack off! As well as sessions at the centre in Kirkstall, Claire’s team run sessions for all abilities in Weetwood, Chapel Allerton, Moortown and Harrogate. In addition to the pre and post natal classes, there are session for mums looking to tone up in time for summer. Whatever your reason for turning to pilates, don’t expect a gentle exercise class. This is hard work. “I really push these women! admits Claire. “There’s no point in coming and doing something if you’re not going to feel the difference. We push these women hard and they complain, but they’re grateful! To find out more, look at www.leedspilatesplace.co.uk or call 0113 225 0791

here’s a lot going on when you step into the nursery at Moorlands School. A group of boys have hijacked the construction area and a couple of girls have taken charge of the drawing table, but the water and sand stations are a magnet for everyone else. These children are learning without even knowing it, using independent play. “We are education with extremely good care,” says Wendy Cooper, Head of Early Years at Moorlands School. “From the moment your child arrives we are looking at their potential. Our ultimate aim is for them to achieve academically as they progress through the school.” Children can join from two years old and the majority continue with their education at Moorlands. This makes the transition to Reception easy for both the child and the school. Reception staff are familiar faces within the nursery and older pupils are regular visitors. “The older children do look out for our little ones,” says Wendy. “In fact, the Year 6 children come down to help and they see it as a treat. They’ll read stories and play with the nursery children. It’s about showing our children they’re part of a school community.” At two, the children join the Kittens room, and progress to the Squirrels then Foxes. All children can take part in dance lessons and swimming at the onsite pool. There are plans to introduce YogaBugs and French classes in the near future. Wendy Cooper says those activities, as well as the co-educational environment help give children a complete education. “I think we give them a rounded view of what life is about. It’s not just the fact we have boys and girls, but our pupils are from a range of ethnic backgrounds. Children need to know that people have different coloured skin and different opinions, but you treat everyone with respect.” Moorlands School Nursery offers morning only sessions or full day care. Supported by the staff at the onsite Children’s Corner Nursery, care is available from 7.30am until 6pm. Holiday childcare is also available. Children are welcome from 2 years old and don’t need to be potty trained. 0113 278 5286 • www.moorlands-school.co.uk

t’s a wet winter morning and the children at Thorner Pre-School are wrapped up and outside. Whatever the weather, you’ll find the girls and boys climbing a wall, painting a house or tending their vegetable patch in the wonderful natural play area designed by the pre-school’s manager Belinda Bateson. Her desire to bring natural play back into this learning environment has won praise from across Yorkshire. “73 nurseries have been to visit to take a look at our outdoor area – it’s a great example of natural play,” says Belinda who enlisted some family help to get it built. “We have a stream, several climbing walls, there’s tree stumps and den making equipment.” Children are encouraged to leave the crayons inside and write with the material they find on the ground. Shapes are drawn with slate, coal and chalky stone. It’s a great way to encourage children reluctant to learn the traditional way. “Children need to be taken back to natural play – going back to a wild area and finding things to play with,” says Belinda who is mum to 5 children. “They have to learn independent play.” And independent thought is encouraged too. The children have a committee to give staff their thoughts on the curriculum. This week they’ve chosen mark making and are using cars, sand and water. “If a child’s not interested, they won’t learn,” says Belinda who has been at Thorner for 11 years. “We know we’re doing something right because we’re told by the schools our children go on to, that they’re ready to learn.” Thorner Pre-School offers morning, afternoon and full day sessions. Children are welcome from 2 years old and don’t need to be potty trained. For more, contact Belinda 0113 289 2541 • www.thornerpreschool.org

miling faces and a host of questions greet visitors to the nursery at Moorfield School for Girls. Forget the idea that the walls are painted pink and the girls only play with dolls, this is a bright purpose built environment filled with opportunities to learn around every corner. Jane Williams is Head of Early Years here and says the small numbers mean staff can focus on the children as individuals. “Our girls are all different, they all develop at different stages. We train them to be independent learners – to go and find their own resources.” And the resources are plentiful in the two storey nursery building. The girls also have access to the school’s specialist french and music teachers as soon as they begin their time in Nursery. It means the staff can spot and support children with a talent. “Our music teacher saw a nursery child with exceptional rhythm last year,” says Jessica Crossley, Headteacher of Moorfield School. “That child is now in Reception and would be considered too young to learn an instrument in some schools. Here she’s learning the violin.” As well as the outstanding music department, Mrs Crossley is proud of the pastoral care given to the girls from Nursery. “People who visit us are always struck by the atmosphere. A lot of schools talk about a family atmosphere but at Moorfield, there really is one.” That atmosphere is displayed in the playground as the girls, regardless of age, play happily. It’s also evident at mealtimes in the Nursery. “We have a family sit down meal at lunchtime,” says Jane Williams. “I eat with them. We sit round a table, use a knife and fork and we talk. We eat like they would at home. That’s the sort of experience that makes our girls so confident.” The majority of the girls in nursery continue their education at Moorfield, building on the early friendships and the academic foundation they’ve been given. “Each child is brought on according to their level of learning,” says Mrs Crossley. “Even when it looks like they’re playing a game, they’re learning. These are Moorfield girls from the minute they join us.” Moorfield School for Girls welcomes children from 2 ½ years old. Flexible sessional care is available. FLUTTERBABIES Baby Yoga Fancy seeing your baby do a butterfly? Keen to watch your little one perform the lotus? It’s no problem for the families in Samantha Dalton’s baby yoga sessions. This is a great way of combining bonding, with exercise and some much needed relaxation for mum. “If you have older children, you often don’t get that one on one time with baby,” says mum of two Samantha. “Baby yoga is fantastic bonding time.” The sessions, which run in Clifford and Adel, begin with a welcome and some news about the week. Today’s group report a chest infection, some problematic teething and a bad night. Then the group begins to warm up. The babies range in age from 10 weeks to 9 months so Samantha tailors the exercises to the individual child.

TENNIS TYKES The game of tennis conjures up images of freshly cut grass and pristine white clothing. Not at Tennis Tykes. The venue is a town hall in Leeds and thankfully this group of boisterous pre-schoolers have opted for more forgiving clothing. These sessions introduce children from as young as two to the game of tennis, and help them with some key skills along the way. Caroline Buncall runs the classes and says she’s passionate about teaching young children a great sport. “At Tennis Tykes we teach co-ordination, we work on colours and numbers. Working in a group while playing sport also helps with confidence. This isn’t just about tennis, it’s about the fundamentals of life!” Research has revealed that tennis is the best first sport for a child to learn. It develops a huge number of skills, works on rhythm and gets the heart racing. Caroline’s Tennis Tykes sessions have been up and running for a year and are proving popular with both boys and girls. There’s no need to pray for sunshine like they do at Wimbledon, because these sessions are run inside. “I try to make the classes accessible to parents by using church halls,” says Caroline. “Every class is different because every child gets something different out of it.” Although the lessons begin with some warm ups, the children are desperate to grab a racquet and start playing. No matter what stage your child is at, Caroline finds an exercise to suit them.
“Our babies spend a lot of time sat in car seats and pushchairs,” says Samantha. “It means they stiffen up. Here, we do a lot of work to loosen off joints and get baby moving.” There’s the promise of relaxation at the end of the class, but this is not a session for the passive parent. Mums need to massage, manipulate and move around with their baby. But aside from the obvious fun everyone is having, what are the benefits of baby yoga? “I’ve had mums who find it helps baby sleep – some mums do it before bedtime,” explains Samantha. “It can also help with colic and indigestion because we do a lot of work around the tummy. The babies tend to leave class with full nappies!” Flutterbabies offers a beginners yoga session for babies from 10 weeks old, which runs for 6 weeks. After that you can move on to a more advanced class which introduces more complex moves – like the hatha headstand! Samantha is also hoping to move into Children’s Centres across Leeds to take the baby yoga message to more mums. As the session draws to a close, the final benefit is clear. Mum gets a chance to relax before returning to the dash of daily life, as Samantha explains. “Relaxation is a really important part of yoga. It’s important mum has time to recharge her batteries without feeling guilty about not doing jobs around the house! This is time for mums to zone out. Tasks and thoughts can wait. This is a time to enjoy being a mum! Flutterbabies offers Beginner and Advanced baby yoga courses on Thursday morning in Clifford and in the afternoon in Adel. Samantha also runs private classes for NCT groups. To find out more call 01937 558 500 • www.flutterbabies.co.uk
The star of today’s session is three year old Josh who hits every ball his Dad feeds and celebrates with a huge smile. “This is tennis,” says Caroline. “So I like to use racquets from the beginning. If you sign up to a tennis class, I think you expect that.” And Families Leeds expects to see Josh on a grass court, playing in pristine whites in the not too distant future! Tennis Tykes now offers pre-school sessions in Ilkley, Wetherby, Harrogate and across North Leeds including a NEW class in Adel. For more information look at www.tennistykes.co.uk • 07843 342 662.

Did you know that all children should have their eyes tested before they begin school? If you didn’t, you’re not alone. More than half of parents in Leeds have never visited an optician with their child. Families Leeds Editor Sarah Butters finds out why waiting ‘til eight is too late.
I
CAN CLEARLY REMEMBER the advice I was given about when to take my children to visit the dentist for the first time. I can even tell you how often you should take your child to have their feet measured. However, at no point during my two daughters’ lives can I remember being told when to take them for their first eye test. So I was rendered speechless by the parent who recently told me that she’d been taking her son to her local optometrist since the age of three. It’s some comfort to me, that I’m not alone. A recent survey revealed that most parents don’t consider a trip to the optometrist as important as a visit to the dentist or even a holiday hair cut. It means more than a third of all eight year olds have never had their eyes tested. While that may not feel too late, it is if your child has an eye problem like a lazy eye or a squint.

“There are certain conditions that can only be corrected before the age of eight, says Paul Appleson, a child friendly optometrist from Wetherby. “Without a test, that child will probably end up with an eye problem throughout their life. That’s why we use the warning, ‘Eight is too late’. Reception age children are given sight screening at school. However, this is a basic test that, experts say, is no substitute for the more comprehensive examination you’ll get at your local optometrist. Only 7% of all under 5s have been tested but it should, says Paul, be on every parents’ list for the summer before a child begins school. “It’s an ideal time, he says. “So much of what a child is presented with at school is visual. Remember, a child will not, usually, complain of eye problems. They may have reduced vision in an eye and not know it. Paul has teamed up with child friendly optometrists across Leeds and written to primary schools across the city. They’re offering to go in and host a healthy eye assembly to encourage pupils to head home and tell parents they’re entitled to a free eye test. It can, Paul says, be fun! “The test we give to children is not the same as an adult test, he says reassuringly. “Children don’t need to be able to read. A skilled practitioner should make it fun and aside from that, the test detects problems BEFORE they have any impact on a child’s learning. Since the school gate revelation, I’ve taken both my girls for their first eye test. Thankfully they were give a clean bill of health and asked to come back in 12 months – that’s the outcome in the majority of cases. However, for the small percentage of children who do have a sight problem, early intervention can make the difference between something that can be solved, and a problem they’ll live with for the rest of their life. Every child under 16 is entitled to a FREE eye test under the NHS. Families Leeds has compiled a list of child friendly optometrist in YOUR area. Take a look at www.familiesleeds.co.uk to see the full list.

SCHOOL’S OUT!
From horse riding to fencing, cross stitch to cross country running, there is an extra curricula activity to suit every child. But are there too many activities and are we in danger of overwhelming with after school clubs? Jane Disley, Headmistress of Richmond House School, tells Families Leeds about why less is more when it comes to choices outside of the classroom.
T: 01635 298326
W
hen I was a child the only out of school activity I can remember being on offer was Brownies. That was it. The opportunities now are fantastic and there’s a huge choice, but there’s a limit as to how much you can squeeze into a little person’s life. It’s good for children to do something that’s not academic, using different skills and energies, to find out what they’re interested in. It’s great to be part of a team, especially now some schools don’t offer team sports. It’s also important to work in a group as part of your local community. Very often children travel to go to school, so an after school activity with children in their local community is very positive. But ask yourself, when do children have down time? When are they running around outside in the fresh air? Sometimes there’s so much packed into a child’s day they can be busy from 8.30am registration until 6pm, non stop. I’d encourage parents to look at the week as a whole and be aware that children, especially the younger they are, get tired as that week goes on. It’s much better to choose fewer activities but stick with them, as opposed to ‘scatter shopping’. Signing up to too many often means having to drop out as the term goes on. Children have to understand it’s important to stick at things, to get that end result. If they’re spread too thinly, they may not find the activity they have a talent in, because they’ve not had the time to give it commitment. At Richmond House School we offer a lot of physical sports based activities – rugby, football, cricket, athletics, badminton, netball. There are also musical activities and academic clubs. We also have more unusual activities, like fencing and judo. With children, once they are confident with something, that confidence spreads to other areas. Once a child understands the enjoyment they get from an activity they’re good at, an activity they’ve put effort into, that has a positive effect in the classroom. So the knock on effect from an after school activity can be seen in their academic work. But none of this should be at the expense of the family. Families have very little time together. Even at the weekends, families spend a lot of time doing separate things with parents acting as a chauffeur service, meeting on a Saturday morning to synchronise diaries. There’s no doubt, there’s a lot to be gained from extra curricula activities, but there’s also a lot to be gained from spending time together as a family. Richmond House is a co-educational school for children from 3 – 11 based in Far Headingley. Open Days on Tuesday 8th March (2 – 7pm) and Monday 9th May (2 – 7pm). 0113 275 2670 • www.rhschool.org

So you want
TO APPEAL…
Last year Yorkshire had the highest number of parents in the country to appeal against the primary school place they’d been allocated. Families Leeds looks at what you can do if your child misses out on a place at their preferred school, and what your chances are of success.
V
ICKI GILBERT can still remember the four long months she spent preparing to appeal against the school place offered to her daughter Hope. Vicki, who is disabled, had applied to Rawdon Littlemoor Primary School which offers easy access and plenty of parking for people with disabilities. Securing a place at the school would mean Vicki could drop off and pick up with ease. But in March 2006, the family received a letter telling them Hope had not been successful. “It wasn’t an easy choice to go to appeal,” says Vicki. “Compiling a case was not only time consuming but very stressful. We were advised by lots of people that we had no chance of winning, but we did win. It was worth it, but I NEVER want to experience it again.” One in every 10 parents in Leeds is choosing to go down the same path. Statistics show that the number of parents choosing to appeal has doubled over the past 2 years. That’s down to an increase in the birth rate as well as more education about the appeals process. However, Leeds City Council says the overwhelming majority of appeals, fail. “Grounds for appeal at this stage are very few and far between,” says Viv Buckland, Head of Admissions at Education Leeds. “Less than 3% are successful.” However, there are some grounds for launching an appeal. If you feel the admissions authority have made a mistake that’s cost you a place at the school, there’s the chance of a challenge. There may also be a case if you can prove the authority has acted unreasonably. But experts urge caution. Viv Buckland says they often see parents who feel they have a strong case, but it doesn’t meet the appeal criteria. “If you are going to tell the appeal panel about childcare, about travel arrangements, about little one being upset because they want to be with their friends, you are not going to be successful. These are the basis of the 97% that fail.” The law limits class sizes to 30 children, making any appeal at a popular school a challenge. Matt Richards is often a parent’s last hope. He runs a company called School Appeals and his team have helped families across the country get into the school of their choice. “You need to know it’s a battle,” warns Matt. “You are going to be asked some awkward questions. This is NOT a job interview. Someone will be there to unpick your case. That’s why people turn to someone like me.” Nearly half of all enquiries to School Appeals are from parents looking to challenge their primary school place. However Matt Richards says when he’s heard their case, and the parent has heard what the odds of success are, only a handful go on to instruct him.
“The most common case I get is a parent who has 2 children at a school, and a lot of families have moved into their area,” Matt explains. “As a result, their Reception age child has not got a place. The parents think that’s unreasonable, but on appeal 49 times out of 50 they will loose.” Matt says despite parents’ frustrations, it’s not the fault of the authorities. Limited class sizes and rising birth rates are putting more pressure each year on the admissions process. But sometimes parents have no one to blame but themselves. “The issue that causes the most distress from parents is when they have a child at a school, and they don’t think they need to apply for a younger sibling,” says Viv Buckland. “Some parents think it’s automatic, but it’s not.” Parents in Leeds will receive their primary school decision around the 20th April. Launching an appeal that could be financially and emotionally costly isn’t the only option open to parents. You can also put your child’s name on your preferred school’s waiting list. In fact, there’s no limit to the number of waiting lists you can join, but you do need to make those decisions by 9th May. “One parent last year was on 23 different waiting lists,” says Viv Buckland. “But once again you need to be clear about your order of preference. The waiting list system is much more successful than the appeal process.” Waiting lists remain open until the 31st December. It gives parents the option to change school after the start of the school year, if a place becomes available. There’s often movement in September with families moving over the summer or opting for a place in the private sector. For those willing to be patient and flexible in the early weeks of your child’s education, a place at the school of your choice may become available. For parents who feel they have grounds for an appeal the advice is, be realistic and seek no obligation, professional help. “Don’t spend a lot of money until you’ve done your homework and take advice,” says Matt Richards. “A complex case will require hard work, but you may be one of the 3% who wins. And when we do win, we change peoples’ lives.”

What about an Independent Education?
Open Events
An independent education offers high academic standards, good examination results, sound discipline, superior facilities and a commitment to a wide range of sport and extra-curricular activities. Pupils are encouraged to develop their talents and to pursue new interests through clubs and societies, sport, outdoor activities and community service. Usually independent schools offer outstanding facilities and resources, with generous budgets for equipment and staff training. Recognising such advantages, many parents will do all they can, even in these tough economic times, to ensure that their youngsters enjoy the benefits offered by the independent sector. For lots of parents the continuity and stability of their children’s education is also very important. Many independent schools provide an education from the age of three to 18, giving staff the opportunity to get to know each pupil’s strengths over a number of years. Children also benefit from such continuity and make lifelong friends along the way. One such school is The Grammar School at Leeds which offers pre-prep education at Rose Court in Headingley and a junior school, senior school and sixth form at Alwoodley Gates. Anne Pickering, head of Rose Court, said,“At an independent school you will find that parents, staff and pupils have the same expectations and are committed to high achievement, coupled with happy, productive days. Children become confident, articulate young people with high selfesteem and a ‘can do’ attitude.” Smaller class sizes are also a big plus with more time for teacher and pupil interaction, greater concern for the pastoral and academic development of every individual, and often a calmer learning environment. Before choosing an independent school, visit a number of schools and talk to the pupils as you go round. There is no better advert for a successful school than its happy and fulfilled students.

TOP 5 EASTER DAYS OUT
1
SPICEWORLD – The Exhibition at LEEDS CITY MUSEUM
Imagine a day out which combines a trip down memory lane for mum, and the chance to try out life as a pop star for your little wannabees. Welcome to SpiceWorld – The Exhibition. It’s a journey behind the scenes at a Spice Girls concert, with everything from outfits, discs from around the world and a timeline charting how 5 became 4. Liz West is the brains behind this project. She’s spent 14 years collecting 3,849 pieces of memorabilia from the four corners of the world, and until the beginning of July, it’s on display at Leeds City Museum. But this is an exhibition that invites you and your family to look, touch and play. “You can dress up as your favourite Spice Girl and head to our stage to sing Wannabee, says Liz proudly. “There are score cards for your friends to give your performance marks out of 10. If people aren’t a Spice fan when they arrive – we hope they will be when they leave! Each visitor is invited to be either an Artist or a Manager and take the journey with the Spice Girls from 1994. There’s the chance to listen to their hit records, see the outfits they wore while performing and watch SpiceWorld – The Movie. The museum’s delighted to be hosting the exhibition and says what Liz has collected is really special. “This is contemporary collecting at its best, says Helen Landwick, Curator of Exhibitions. “Liz is a modern day version of the people who in Victorian times travelled the world to collect. The collections of today, like this, will be the history of tomorrow. SpiceWorld – The Exhibition will run until the 3rd July at Leeds City Museum. Open from 10am on weekdays, and from 11am on Sat & Sun. CLOSED Mondays. www.leeds.gov.uk/citymuseum

And if, like Alice, you get peckish on your adventures there is jam tart making and biscuit decorating. Just beware of those rabbit holes! Harewood House is open daily from 1st April.
