Welcome back... Happy nearly Father’s Day to all the dads out there! One of the best super powers the father of my children possesses is his cooking. It is fantastic. Honestly – he makes perfect pancakes, concocts amazing curries and the roast dinners he dishes up are dreamy. However, a culinary genius needs time and space to work, and family life is not always accommodating. The first time I realized that the Masterchef I had married might need to adapt his style was only a few

days after the birth of our first child. He had returned to work and I was at home alone all day with the newborn. I was relieved when he walked through the door, and also pleased that my mum had left us some casserole to heat up for dinner. However, Horsforth’s very own Heston inspected the homemade ready meal and decided that it needed rosti to accompany it. So, he went out again, to buy ingredients. He then peeled, par-boiled and carefully grated potatoes, before assembling said rostis. As they roasted to perfection in the oven, he sat back, really rather pleased with himself, while I contemplated chewing his arm off out of hunger and frustration. We have travelled a long way from this point, via years of righteous indignation at being interrupted whilst ‘trying to cook’ – (I have never cooked without being interrupted), through his sad realization that children often don’t appreciate the finer points of ‘jus’. Now he accepts that his passion for complex dicing, stirring and mashin’ is best indulged on high days and holidays. So, this Father’s Day, he will spend hours slaving over a hot stove before serving up a treat that will be declared awesome and epic. And we will all be happy. Dads, enjoy your special day! Families NEWS… iT’s Official... Our Readers Prefer faMilies Magazine to the internet! Last year, we conducted a survey across the UK asking readers to tell us what they find useful about our magazine and how likely they would be to respond to advertising in it. We were delighted to receive almost 500 responses and by the wonderful feedback you gave us. More than 70% of our readers said they were highly likely to respond to advertising in our magazine or had already done so. That’s fabulous news for our advertisers and for our readers, because it means we can carry on making the magazine better and better! A whopping 79% of readers told us that they use the magazine to research ideas for local family activities or classes and clubs for children and 74% said they use it to plan family life. Many of you also told us that you find it easier to plan family activities and

entertainment using Families Magazine than using the internet! You told us that using the internet to research and plan can be time consuming and confusing, involving lots of trawling online for useful information. A typical response came from a reader in Lancashire who said,“We can trawl the internet for an age, but with Families® [Magazine] we just turn the page.” A reader in Portsmouth told us,“I have given up on googling what is happening over the school holidays as I just get bombarded with hundreds of websites. It can get exhausting and time consuming clicking on each one.” Readers also told us that they really value having a physical magazine in their hands in which all the information relevant to family life has already been collated and is presented to them in an easy-to-digest format.

A typical response came from a reader here in Leeds, who said,“If I can quickly flick through a magazine and find something that is suitable for all the family it makes my life a million times easier.” Thank you to everyone that volunteered their comments. If you are interested in taking part in one of our Reader Forums, please email info@familiesmagazine.co.uk with your name, phone number and post code. *Readers names have not been quoted for privacy reasons.

Class Review: MusicBugs

WHERE: Classes take place in Alwoodley, Headingley, Horsforth, Harrogate, Moortown, Otley, Roundhay and Stainbeck WHEN: Various, Monday to Friday AGES: 0 to crawling – Baby Bugs, 6 to 24 months - Mini Bugs, 6 months to 4 years – Family Bugs

familiesonline.co.uk

T’S TUESDAY MORNING and my little one is ready to party. Thank goodness it’s our MusicBugs day! My 15-month-old and I love these weekly sessions. She’s my third child and life is very hectic. Dedicated time spent doing something fun with one another is precious – and all too rare. So, when someone else has put a lot of thought into planning that fun, it is very much appreciated. We arrive at the church hall where our MusicBugs class is held along with some familiar faces, to a warm welcome from the teacher, Becky. We take our seat on one of the little rugs set out in a circle, and my companion totters up to help herself to some of the exciting different instruments in a bucket in the middle of the room, with jolly music playing in the background to set the scene. Singing starts with the Hello! song and the the fun begins. Each session has a theme – animals, travel, seasonal holidays – with familiar nursery rhymes and some new ones to learn. There are counting songs, fingerplay rhymes, knee bouncers and action songs. It’s the nearest thing I get to a cardio workout all week! Becky has a gentle-but-fun style that puts everyone at ease. She hands out various different props each week – some of which it has to be said make for fantastic photo ops – with the wee ones sporting dinosaur tails, fastening horses and ponies to their fronts, reindeer ears at Christmas, bunny ears at Easter.

I

Things like finger puppets, teddies and pom poms are woven into the songs, giving a sensory aspect to them. We sometimes play with a parachute and every session the children adore the bubbles at the end, before we sing goodbye and each get a sticker. The imaginative and varied content of each class, with its clear structure and attention to detail make MusicBugs a real winner. However, at the same time, what we also love is how relaxed, accepting and happy an environment it is. There are no ‘rights’ and ‘wrongs’, the children are free to enjoy the music and explore, and if they’re feeling shy and just want to sit and cuddle and watch, that’s ok too. Vicky Bannister, who runs MusicBugs Leeds, and teaches many of the classes herself. “We have a lot that come into baby classes and they stay all the way through until they’re off to pre-school or nursery and it’s quite upsetting, saying goodbye,” she said. Others just do a term, and try lots of different things. There’s also an opportunity to try a three-week trial for £12, so that you can get a good idea if it’s for you. For us, I think we’re in it for the long term. It’s a sacred part of our weekly routine, and Tuesdays just wouldn’t be the same without MusicBugs! For more information on class timetables and how to book, visit www.musicbugs.co.uk/leeds or call 08445 781 043.

TOP TIPS party! ’s n re d il h c a G IN IV V for SUR Whether you’re hosting a full compliment of excitable, sugar-fuelled reception children, or a restless gang of sleepover pals, parents usually approach their child’s birthday with at least a hint of trepidation. We’ve put together a short survival guide to keep the stress levels under control…

1. sPecial daTe Don’t choose the actual date of your child's birthday to have the party on; experience tells us that parents pile even more expectations on themselves when the party is arranged for the big day.

2. keeP iT in PeRsPecTive Don’t be tempted to go large. Too many children can equate to complete chaos.

3. Hide THe PResenTs Take gifts your child is given discretely to one side and allow them to open them after everyone has gone. With smaller children, it can be very overwhelming and is often nice to save some presents for the following days.

4. snaP iT Ask a friend or family member who is at the party to have their phone or camera ready to take pictures.

5. Be PRePaRed Have the matches close to hand for when the time comes to sing happy birthday. Have the music ready so you only have to hit play. 8 Families Leeds

And here are some words of wisdom from Families Magazine’s friends… “The best way to survive a children’s party is to try not to be Super Mum and do it all yourself! Enlist the help of family members and don’t be afraid to ask friends either for a helping hand. My Mum or my Mother-in-law always happily bake the cake, saving me the stress and time to do it. My Dad is always willing to pick up a bin bag and help clear up. Friends will often ask if you need any help and the most common response is ‘no it’s fine, I’m OK’. Change that to a simple: ‘yes please!’ and reap the benefit at the end of the day, when all the kids are fast asleep and you unwind with a glass of something special.” – Laura Macauley, Families North Yorkshire Editor “We have a summer birthday so I always give the option of a party or a weekend away to the seaside with just the family, because if done well they almost cost the same as each other! Surviving an actual party for me means giving a nice book as a party bag and having it outside if possible.” – Sian Stowell, Body, Mind and Heart I think fiver parties are the way forward. Instead of each guest bringing a present, they each give £5 that the child’s parents put towards a gift that they really want! It’s the latest thing, and a good one in my book! – Lisa Ross, Families’ What’s On Editor “Be creative with your ideas and link the party to an interest of your child’s. Don’t feel pressured to invite everyone in your child’s class, ask them who they would like to invite. Don't be scared of doing an old-fashioned house party, the kids love it.” – Sally Harington, Northern Arts Factory

advice fROM MR sHuffles! Our friend Mr Shuffles has some words of wisdom for readers planning parties: “Look at what the child and you as parents like, and make sure what you are hiring or booking is age appropriate. If you are hiring equipment, make sure it is from a reputable source with all the appropriate safety tests and certificates in place. Remember that children need to be supervised on a bouncy castle. Hiring a small inflatable to entertain a large number of children might not be the best option – think about numbers and what is appropriate for the setting.” www.shuffles.net

Childcare in School Holidays Piecing together the Puzzle By Gabrielle Nash

HAT DO THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS mean to you? Ice creams in the park? Lazy mornings with the kids? Or a carefully constructed puzzle of parental annual leave and various childcare options? When your children reach school age, work life balance becomes easier for parents in some ways. Then the school holidays arrive and there are long weeks of childcare to find. For many families this is a painful financial burden, and with holiday childcare costs rising by 4% last year that burden is set to increase. In their latest survey, the Coram Family & Childcare Trust found the average price of holiday childcare in Britain to be £133 per child per week. Megan Jarvie, the head of the trust, believes now is the time to urgently address the issue. “For too many families, the long summer holiday is a time of stress and expense as they try to patch together a solution despite gaps in availability and financial support.”

W

What are the Options? Annual Leave: Most parents do not have sufficient annual leave to cover the entire school holidays, so it’s worth investigating if your employer can offer additional parental leave. A less desirable option is “shift parenting” whereby you and your partner each take annual leave separately. The downside, of course, is that you don’t see each other, although this option does cover a large portion of the holidays. Flexible Working: Can your employer offer the option to work flexibly? If you work shifts, can you work a different shift pattern to assist with holiday childcare? Katie Abdullah has five children and started her own business because

of the tricky work/school balance. “I can tailor my work around the children. I try to take extra hours during the term so I can have more free time during the holidays.” Family Assistance: If you’re fortunate enough to have extended family nearby, willing grandparents can play an integral role in school holiday childcare. What about asking a sibling, aunty, uncle or even a friend to provide the odd day or even week? Childminders: You may be lucky enough to find a childminder who handles term-time wrap around care and covers school holidays. Alternatively, for more ad-hoc hours, try getting some regular, friendly babysitters on board. Take a look at organisations like www.sitters.co.uk Holiday Nanny/Au Pair: If you have term-time wrap around care sorted but require holiday care, another option is to find a childcare provider who can provide care in your home just for the holidays. These can be more affordable than you think. Try: www.childcare.co.uk Holiday Clubs: There are lots of local holiday club options, with specialisations ranging from sport, to drama or a mix of lots of activities. For example, Northern Arts Factory run very popular acting, dancing and singing workshops for ages five to 12, from 9am up to a late pick up at 4pm. LEGAL ADVICE

Everybody needs good neighbours! Gurpreet Birdi from Emsleys solicitors has some helpful advice on neighbourly relations… Usually, a friendly wave and a brief chat with the people living next door is sufficient to assure us that you all get on well. If you want to show slightly more initiative, you might even invite your neighbours to enjoy the odd slice of cake and cup of tea – this is guaranteed to further cement the said neighbourly relations and means you can tick the ‘I get on with my neighbours’ box – happy days! Unfortunately, this brief and blissful thought must now be broken as we look at the sad reality of the situation for some of our more ‘unlucky’ neighbours. Civil Litigation lawyers regularly work with clients who have found themselves embroiled in disputes with their neighbours. These disputes can range from a disagreement about the true position of a boundary to complaints about noise nuisance and everything in between. Although the police have a range of powers to deal with situations where neighbour disputes involve antisocial behaviours, they are less likely to become involved in what would be termed as ‘civil neighbour disputes’. These can be extremely complex and require specialist legal knowledge to understand the issues and hopefully resolve them. Disputes over the legal boundaries which divide properties are a good example of just how complicated the issues can be once raised between individuals. There can be inaccuracies between the documentation

held by parties or the replacement of an original feature and new building works can all give rise to a dispute. There are of course many other land issues which will keep civil lawyers busy ranging from access and parking issues to disputes over high hedges and trees. Should these types of incidents occur, the first step should always be to talk! The power of sensible and meaningful discussion at this time cannot be underestimated. If it helps you to avoid potential or actual legal action and litigation, then you need to make the first move and encourage the spirit of compromise.

If all else has failed, it might be that legal action needs to be taken to resolve the situation. However, this should be the last resort as litigating these days can become expensive, time consuming and, in neighbour disputes, stressful. The advice should be to avoid it! If legal action is required, Emsleys Solicitors can devise a plan of action to achieve your objectives while offering cost effective, pragmatic and sensible advice. Thinking About Going Vegan or Vegetarian? Following a vegan or vegetarian diet is becoming increasingly common in the UK. People are making this choice for a variety of ethical, environmental or health reasons. But is it safe for children? Yes is the answer, according NHS guidelines. As long as they get all the nutrients they need. However, parents do need to be well-informed to ensure their children do not suffer nutrient deficiencies, inadequate energy or faltering growth. So what are some of the issues to be aware of? Children need protein to grow and develop. If you’re avoiding meat or fish (vegetarian) or any food from animals (vegan), they will need good protein substitutes. These include eggs, dairy products such as milk and cheese, soya products, pulses and beans, nuts and seeds. If a child is getting protein from just one type of bean, the particular bean may not provide every amino acid they need, so there has to be a good balance of pulses. In other words, a child who only eats chicken will get all the amino acids – but a child who only eats one type of bean may not. Another issue is energy intake. Children need lots of energy to fuel healthy growth and development. Vegetarian and vegan foods can be higher in fibre and lower in calories than a diet that includes meat. This can mean that children get full up before they’ve eaten enough calories and nutrients. As children typically don’t eat a lot, getting enough calories in them can be difficult. Include energy and nutrientdense foods like nut butters, hummus, seeds and vegetable oils in their diets. It is especially important that children following vegetarian or vegan diets eat a wide variety of different foods from each food group to ensure they get a good balance of nutrients. Consider supplements. According to the NHS, vitamin drops are particularly important for vegetarian and vegan children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years. In particular, they may need vitamin B12 supplement. For more information visit www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well
