WHAT’S ON? Your guide to November & December, including where to find Father Christmas!

12

Welcome back...

It’s curtains up on our festive issue, and I’m particularly excited to share our guide to Christmas theatre with you. One of my favourite family activities is going to see a play or pantomime. It’s not just because I get to sit down in a darkened room for at least an hour, or that most of the time I feel like it’s me who’s living in a fast-paced farce and I’m in danger of forgetting my lines! A family theatre trip is a real treat. Whether it’s watching a live performance, a favourite film, reading a book together or making some paper chains, I hope these Christmas holidays afford some happy shared time for everyone. A truly precious gift. Have a lovely Christmas. Claire Bottomley (Editor)

CHECK YOUR RED BOOKS One in seven five-year-olds may not be protected against potentially life threatening measles, Public Health England (PHE) has warned. PHE has revealed that about 30,000 children may have started primary school with no protection against measles, mumps and rubella, while 90,000 may have had only the first of the two vaccines necessary for protection. There were 230 cases of measles in England in the first quarter of 2019, many linked to visiting European countries during holiday periods. As a result of these outbreaks, the UK has now lost its measlesfree status, just three years after the virus was eliminated. PHE is urging all parents to check their child’s Red Book to make sure there is a record of two MMR doses and the 4-in-1 booster vaccine. If not, parents should contact their GP practice to arrange any further vaccinations.

CLUBS & CLASSES Header

HANNAH TAKES THE HELM AT TUMBLE TOTS Long-established family favourite Tumble Tots Huddersfield-Sheffield has a new person in charge. Hannah Wilkinson took over the activity classes this summer, taking the reins from Monique Brennan, who decided to hang up her bean bags after 21 years of delivering Tumble Tots sessions. Tumble Tots offers 45-minute physical activity sessions for children aged from six months to seven years, with each class aimed at age-specific development. Hannah started out as a Tumble Tots parent, taking her son and then daughter to classes before becoming a trainer. “I jumped at the chance to work for

Tumble Tots,” she said. “I have always enjoyed the company of small children and, having made the decision not to return to my previous job as an Engineer in the textile industry, I was looking for a part time job that worked around my children. Tumble Tots was perfect.” Hannah quickly progressed to become a Play Leader, before taking over as Franchisee and Centre Manager. “I love being in class, being hands on with the children and the equipment and speaking with all the parents; it is still my favourite part of the job,” she said. “All of the classes use a wide range of specially designed equipment and have a high staff to child ratio. They are a lovely way to spend quality time with your child, while developing their core skills for an active and healthy life from an early age.” Tumble Tots classes run during term time across the Huddersfield and North West Sheffield area in various locations. For more information, visit www.tumbletots.com/huddersfield

JIVE TIME AT DIDDI DANCE! This half term, Diddi Dance North and Central Leeds is jumping into action with a new theme – Jive. “Jive is always popular, and it ties in perfectly at this time of the year with the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, which Diddi Dance featured on in 2015,” said Julia Grantham who runs the classes. There’ll also be a Christmas special class at the end of term, when the diddi dancers can dress up. This year, three new classes have been added in Headingley, Yeadon and Adel, run by qualified dance instructor Susan Cunningham. Trial classes and sibling discounts are available. For more information, visit www.diddidance.com.

LITTLE LEOPARDS LEAP INTO ACTION A brand new music and sensory class for little ones is set to launch in Leeds. Little Leopards has been established by nurse and new mum Sophie Brearley. Babies and toddlers aged from birth to two can enjoy a zingy zany time, with light shows, sounds and puppets to spark their imagination. See them respond and move in time to the nursery rhymes, watching bubbles float and hearing rain fall. “With a background in nursing, I am caring and sensitive, and enthusiastic about child development,” explained Sophie. “We’re confident that our classes will be highly beneficial for your child as they take their first steps into this world.” The sensory classes also give parents the chance to meet others and exchange tips and advice in a fun environment. They take place across North and East Leeds on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays and there is a free toy for everyone who books a block of sessions for the first term. For more information, visit www.littleleopards.co.uk.

Legend has it that a woman gave birth during a performance of Babes in the Wood in 1941 – the child was gifted free admission to the Varieties for life. In the late 60s and 70s, productions of Cinderella were famed for a coach pulled on stage by real (but very small!) horses. When City Varieties re-opened in 2011 after major restoration it hosted Aladdin – the first of the Rock’n’Roll Pantos – a very different format using a talented troupe of actor-musicians who performed classic hit songs live on stage. Over the past few years there have been many Rock’n’Roll Pantos, and a whole new Leeds tradition has been born. This year, the Varieties presents Red Riding Hood: The Rock’n’Roll Panto, featuring hit songs from the likes of Metallica and Chris de Burgh. ww.cityvarieties.co.uk familiesonline.co.uk

WELLBEING

All in the Mindfulness: looking after children’s wellbeing Mindfulness is becoming an increasingly popular way of helping to look after mental health, and it can be just as beneficial to children as it is to adults. We met a practitioner who works with children to find out more… F THERE’S ONE THING children’s Yoga and Mindfulness teacher Sian Stowell is certain of, it is that her classes are needed. “Children in my classes share worries about exams, difficulties with friendships and bigger life concerns,” said Sian, who set up Body, Mind and Heart a year ago. So, what is Mindfulness? In short, it a simple but effective program of meditative and considered activities. It can provide the tools and mindset needed to handle problems and pressures in a calmer way. “It often begins with paying attention to your senses through different short, playful activities that are fun for everyone,” explained Sian. “When we take a look at the developmental changes that occur within children, the physical changes and events such as starting school, socialising, and simply learning about life, it makes perfect sense to equip children with tools on how to deal with their emotions. Mindfulness helps them develop a positive outlook on life and learn vital stress-relieving skills.” Alongside this, Yoga teaches them to be aware of their breathing, encourages better sleeping patterns and promotes effective concentration and communication skills. Sian has also added aromatherapy to the mix, using calming essential oils during movement, meditation and relaxation. “I began

I

to see a positive response,” she said, “And although I didn’t realise that becoming an aromatherapist would be something I would bump into on my path it has turned out that way.” Sian added,“I have so enjoyed developing the classes, which are fun and positive in so many ways. The aim is to bring a complete and holistic approach to a child’s wellbeing through Yoga, Mindfulness and Aromatherapy. Hopefully they allow the children to feel more able to run free and happy even on their darker days.” n Body, Mind & Heart runs a range of classes for children and teenagers aged from four to 17. For more information visit www.bodymindandheartyoga.com. n If you can’t find a class that’s accessible to your family, there are some great Mindfulness Apps available. Try Smiling Mind: www.smilingmind.com.au or Stop, Breathe & Think Kids: www.stopbreathethink.com/kids n Body, Mind & Heart will be at Horsforth Wellbeing and Craft Fair, at Horsforth Library, on November 16, showcasing oil blends and other aromatherapy gifts.

Could coaching work for you? Coaching is becoming more and more popular in the UK. We caught up with Victoria Brennan, a personal and Professional Development Coach based here in West Yorkshire, to understand how it works and what to look for when choosing a coach. “Coaching is a powerful and thought-provoking tool that enables selfdevelopment, discovery, clarity, space for problem solving and increased self-esteem,” explains Victoria. “I have spent a lot of my career trying to live up to the expectations of others, attempting to be something I’m not and then feeling the pressure for trying. I discovered coaching and haven’t looked back, it helped me to recognise my strengths, improve my self-awareness and to improve my confidence and performance in the process.” She added,“Today I work with people experiencing overwhelm in the workplace and also with people returning to work after a long-term familiesonline.co.uk

absence. I deliver pure coaching so will ask the questions that get you to your answer and then explore taking action and making your answer a reality. One size never fits all and I tailor my packages to meet your needs.” Victoria offers a discovery session free of charge, so that her clients can be happy that she is the right Coach for them. She advises anyone looking for a Coach to have a conversation with them before starting the process, to be sure and happy they are someone that they would want to work with. Interview: RUBY ISAACS Could youFoster? Leeds needs more foster carers from all backgrounds and circumstances to help make a real difference to the lives of local children and young people. Currently, there are more than 1,300 looked after children in the city, and more local authority foster carers are needed. Leeds City Council prides itself on its support for foster carers. They receive a comprehensive package of support including financial support, allowances and discounts, a personal support worker, and free gym membership. Carers also receive ongoing training and are given lots of opportunities to develop their skills to enable them to support the young people they care for as they grow and transition to adulthood. There is no such thing as a typical foster carer – the important thing is that you have the time to give to a child and a commitment to helping them achieve the best possible outcomes. Councillor Fiona Venner, Leeds City Council’s Executive Member for Children and Families, said,“It’s a common misconception that you need special skills to foster a child, however all we ask is that you can provide a safe, secure and loving home and have a willingness to learn. We are always on the lookout for new foster carers in Leeds and would encourage anybody who is interested in finding out more to contact Foster4Leeds. Who knows, it may be that important first step to a rewarding new role where you can really make a positive difference to the lives of children and young people.” To find out more, visit www.foster4leeds.co.uk

We caught up with rising star of cycling Ruby Isaacs, age 11. She is Trek-Sega fredo’s youngest bike rider and in 2018, she was one of the stars of American TV show Little Big Shots. WHO GAVE YOU YOUR RUBY LOVE OF CYCLING? WITH OTLEY’S I started riding my bike about LIZZIE four years ago when I was DEIGNAN seven and I just was watching people racing on the TV and thought that I would love to take on cycling. I did my first race and I loved it so much that I wanted to carry on. DOES ANYBODY ELSE IN YOUR FAMILY CYCLE? No, it’s just me. My brother used to do some cycle races, but now he’s into Football. WHO INSPIRES YOU THE MOST IN YOUR LIFE AND THEN IN THE CYCLING WORLD? The person who inspires me the most in cycling would be Lizzie Deignan and Peter Segan as he does amazing tricks. Lizzie is an amazing cyclist and she’s so fun and cool. My Gran is the one who actually taught me how to ride a bike. HOW MANY ATTEMPTS DOES IT TAKE YOU TO PERFECT THE TRICKS THAT YOU PERFORM ON SOCIAL MEDIA? (See Youtube for Ruby cycling on her rollers whilst throwing a frisbee to knock

off a bottle cap, and cycling on her rollers whilst skipping). With the skipping, it took three days. I injured myself a few times, but then I still carried on. With the bottle cap challenge, I don’t really know how I did it. I got a frisbee and threw it and completely missed it, so we just kept moving it until one time I did it. That probably took me half an hour. With the skipping, I am actually the only one in the world to do it. I used to use a different skipping rope, but it always got caught. This one I have now made it really easy. Skipping is the hardest trick I’ve ever done. DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’D LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU’RE OLDER AND DO YOU PLAN TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL CYCLIST? When I’m older, I would love to be a professional cyclist and do races. I’ve also really wanted to do to the Olympics. I think it’s in LA in 2024 or maybe 2028, but I would love to do that. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OUR READERS WHO ARE TRYING TO GET THEIR CHILD INTO SPORTS? If you’re at a young age just go and have fun. Don’t worry about winning all of the time because when you get older, you can maybe take it a bit more seriously. Go and enjoy it and have fun!

Warm & caring environment at The Mount School “All of our classes have a warm and caring environment which enables children to feel safe and secure as they grow, learn and develop.” – that’s the message from Euan Burton-Smith, headteacher at The Mount School in Huddersfield. From its Lower Kindergarten class upwards, with the help of motivated and talented staff, and with the warm support of an involved parental body, children come to realise their individual potential, he said. “At The Mount School, we truly understand that any expert in our society was once a beginner and that the start of lifelong learning needs to be captivating from the very first moment. We believe that the potential to achieve relies upon the right introduction to school life. That’s why The Mount School has built up a reputation where the needs of all individuals will be identified and met.” He added,“At The Mount, we believe that all children should be taught to think creatively and critically about the world around them. Our curriculum blends the academic, pastoral and active elements to develop children who are aspirational for themselves but also aware of their place in the world.” www.themount.org.uk
