Either return it to the supplier or bag it and place it in normal household waste. Then wash your hands. The bracelet is made of jequirity beans which contain the very toxic poison abrin. There have been no reported cases of poisonings but the Health Protection Agency advises that swallowing chewed, crushed or drilled seeds is serious and requires immediate medical advice.

Bracelets have been sold through 36 retailers across the UK.

Junior and senior pupils worked together at Hipperholme Grammar School Foundation to explore the world of science. Sixth former Gabby Capone, from Halifax, enjoyed helping junior pupils learn how to use microscopes, “The juniors showed no hesitation in getting involved, even when we looked at a cockroach’s head!” Older pupils were impressed by the teamwork, communication and collaboration skills of their young counterparts, “Year 4 & 11 pupils had to build a tower using just newspaper, sellotape and teamwork,” explains Becky Firth from Hipperholme. “The Year 4s had great ideas and were really enthusiastic.” The special week also featured the StarDome, a mobile planetarium where pupils learnt about the solar system.

Heathfield’s magnificent seven It was a grand day out for top Heathfield biathletes as they competed at the national level at Crystal Palace, London in March. The seven talented pupils, seen here with Pentathlon GB coach Liam O’Neill, were all finalists in the Pentathlon GB Schools Biathlon Championship 2011-12. Over 6,000 local aspiring swimmers & runners started on the path to selection last year. Numbers were whittled down through a series of regional heats until the semifinals in Leeds, where only 75 went forward to the National Finals. Proud parent, Petar Sismanovic of Rishworth, said, “It was a brilliant day – the children loved competing in such an iconic venue –

and Heathfield did so well to get 7 Junior athletes to the top level.” As part of Pentathlon GB’s development plan, Heathfield pupils also receive fencing and shooting coaching from Pentathlon GB staff.

The Vikings are coming! The Jorvik Viking Centre will take over the Piece Hall as part of the 3rd Halifax Festival this July. It’s just one of many family events running between 6-15 July in the town. Eureka! will host an outdoor production of The Railway Children. Other venues, like the Square Chapel, Halifax Minster, Manor Heath Park & Dean Clough Galleries, will feature events like Children’s Literature Day and showcase artistic excellence from local groups and schools. 10 things to make starting school easier You’ll know by now which school your child is due to go to in September. For young children this isn’t the time to start force feeding them phonics, it’s about making sure they’re ready for the social challenges of school. As Sarah Butters explains, the more prepared they are, the easier they’ll settle & the more they’ll get out of those early days.

Can they dress themselves?

Imagine the scene. One teacher, thirty children & their coats. If your child can do their own they may get some fresh air. Elasticated waistbands help at PE & with dashes to the loo. Avoid tights - they can lead to bathroom accidents. Velcro shoes mean fastenings your child can do themselves.

Are they used to sharing?

Sharing is a difficult but vital lesson if you want your child to settle in & make friends easily. No one wants to play with the child who refuses to take turns & share. Before long that child becomes isolated. Start to make a point of praising your pre-schooler for sharing their bag of figures or sweets.

Can they use the toilet on their own?

Reception classrooms usually have a toilet nearby but children are expected to use it on their own. Less confident children may avoid a visit until it’s too late. Encourage your child to begin taking toilet trips without you to build up their confidence. Remind them that hand washing is part of the ‘visit’. Starting school toilet training now will mean fewer accidents in September.

Can they eat independently?

Dinner halls are noisy places & can make a child feel overwhelmed. Make sure they know how to use a knife & fork. For packed lunches, can they open a yoghurt, put a straw in a juice box & unpeel a banana? Practice now, however painful, will help in September.

Can they recognise their name?

If so, they’ll be able to find their peg, identify their drawer in the classroom & find their cardigan in the PE pile. Starting school can make even the most confident child feel a little lost. If they can locate important places, it will make them feel more in control.

Can they use scissors?

Teachers look for this in the early stages of Reception to evaluate dexterity. Get crafty over the next few months.

Can they communicate with an adult?

Encourage your child to ask & even practice with a raised hand at home to make sure they understand the most effective way of getting an adult’s attention. Giving your child the skills to communicate with their teacher means they’ll be able to have some control over going to the toilet or getting help with their work. A child who can communicate will get more out of the school day than a child who is unwilling to speak up.

Can they follow simple instructions?

The school day is full of instructions. Your child will be asked to put coats on pegs, bring packed lunches into classrooms & sit cross legged on the carpet for circle time. If a child is used to following instructions, they will avoid being reprimanded. The more time a teacher dedicates to repeating instructions & encouraging co-operation, the less time there is for teaching. Start giving your child simple tasks – perhaps helping with the weekly shop or with some straight forward jobs around the house. It will prepare them for school life.

Do they understand discipline?

Hitting, kicking, biting & hair pulling will not be tolerated. Reputations earned in the early days of school can be hard to shake off – so it’s best to get it right.

Are they able to count?

If your child is able to count up to 20 & count back from 10, this will give them a really good head start. Use some of their favourite toys or foods to make counting fun. Lay out 10 grapes & get them to eat them one by one, counting as they go. It will give them confidence & help them see learning as fun. Plus it’s a great way to get one of their 5 a day down them!

The independent option Whatever the age of your child, if you’re not happy with the school you’ve been allocated you may wish to consider an independent school. Top 5 tips for party photography It’s a great party – & some photos that capture the moment would be brilliant but even with the forgiving nature of digital photography you’re no pro & you don’t want to see your child’s party entirely through a lens. So what can you do? Gaynor Wilson, of Shy Violet Photography, gives her top 5 tips. Children’s parties are usually full of energy, emotion, action & interaction. That means photos are a challenge. Summer celebration

It’s the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – and whether you’re a royalist or not, there’s fun to be had – a street party, a garden party – or just messing about with some face paints. Here our ‘Royal Correspondent’, Allison Thomas, takes you through how to do Jubilee face painting and provides 10 facts about the Queen – just in case you get asked! Across the way, Luca and Maya show you how to make a midsummer crown.
