Well ‘we’ve’ managed the first term of High School. It has involved quite a lot of reprogramming in the organisation department – for all concerned. Firstly there’s getting up earlier – never easy, as I’m afraid none of my family has the ‘lark’ gene. My 11 year old son now insists on hogging the bathroom, something I never dreamed would happen two years ago and showers for so long his dad made him do a ‘sum’ to work out how much each shower cost.

Ironing now has to be actually done. A primary school top can always be stretched and radiator-dried but real shirts don’t do that. Which means there’s been a lot more yelling about heaps of clothes on the floor in addition to the ‘have you packed your bags?’ or ‘have you got your bus fare / dinner money / PE kit / homework?’ and ‘where’s your coat?’

Coats are not ‘cool’ apparently, just like the jumpers I mentioned in September’s issue.

I find it particularly amusing that kids moan about uniform yet self-impose other regulations of their own such as rolled-up sleeves, no jumper and definitely no coat.

It’s going to be a long cold winter without one…

New fitness programme Kettlercise is a great way to shift all that Christmas pudding according to class teacher Sarah Owen.

Sarah runs Kettlercise classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Westfield Primary School in York.

“Kettlercise really does produce quick results,” explains Sarah, ”which, lets face it, everyone would prefer, particularly at this time of year.”

Exercise is carried out with the aid of kettlebells and the workout is designed to shape and sculpt the body in an easy-to-follow routine.

“The minimum calorie burn is 1000 in a 50 minute lesson,” says Sarah, “and the specialist programme enables class members to maximise fat burning, increase muscle strength and work every area of the body.”

Classes are run by Sarah who is a personal trainer and RKPS and REPS registered and she recommends classes to help you keep your diet on track and see better results.

local mum launches new children’s healthy snack bar

Harrogate mum Kate Riall, has recently launched Dragon Bar, a new healthy snack bar for children.

Jam packed with energy-giving goodness, the bar is a delicious nutritional treat designed to keep children going though their after-schools clubs or until their evening meal.

Kate set up Dragon Foods Yorkshire with the aim of encourage good eating habits from a young age, and to tackle the issue every parent faces of hungry children who just want to snack on junk food after school.

“I wanted to develop something that was as convenient as a chocolate bar for mums and just as tasty for children,” said Kate who is Managing Director of Dragon Foods Yorkshire.

A love of swimming has meant a career change for local mum Linzi Ainley “I fell in love with swimming when I was seven,” says Linzi, “and still love it now many years later. After going along to baby swimming classes with my son who is now 13, and teaching my twin girls (now 9) to swim I decided to take the plunge, change my career and become a baby swimming instructor.”

Linzi is a fully qualified Royal Life Saving Society lifeguard and also a fully qualified teacher of babies – and older children - with the Swimming Teachers Association.

Tennis Tykes has been operating its successful York classes since September 2010 all taught by experienced LTA level 3 coach, Ben Walker. Owner, Caroline Buncall is delighted to announce that Ben has now also taken on the York Tennis Tykes franchise.

Linguacook offers fabulous cookery and language workshops for children aged 5 - 17 where young chefs can have fun creating their own culinary masterpieces - and improve their language skills at the same time.

Classes which are held in the historic setting of The Read School, Drax are led by Madame Ruth Ainley under whose tuition children will make a number of delicious recipes during an afternoon.

“Some will be for eating,” says Ruth, “others for taking home and sharing with the family.”

Ruth provides all the ingredients and guarantees to mix in plenty of languages and fun along the way.

“Classes are the perfect place for children to both acquire some cooking skills and learn a foreign language. They’re enjoyable, educational and what’s more, somebody else clears up the mess!”

Classes last three hours and are available in French and German or Italian, catering for all ability levels.

Bookings are now being taken for Spring Courses which run at The Read School, Drax on Saturday afternoons from 11th January to 29th March. For pupils booking a full five week course of lessons a recipe book and cards will be provided at the end of the programme.

Climbing Clubs at Harrogate Climbing Centre Climbing is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, and Harrogate Climbing Centre offer kids’ & youth clubs for anyone aged between 5 and 17 years old.

After the Beijing Olympics I began thinking about what I’d like to do after I’d finished my competitive career and I knew it would be something at grass roots. I’ve always thought teaching swimming could be done better, that it could be done differently. It’s something I’m passionate about. I’ve used the 4 years in the run up to London 2012 to encourage children to get involved in sport so it seemed completely natural to set up my own independent swimming programme.

Why do you think it’s important children get involved in sport?

Sport has given me so much more than medals.

I’ve met my best friends through sport, I’ve learnt about teamwork, respect, dedication. I know the children coming along to my school will be really young but I don’t think you’re ever too young to learn all those things. We will be praising them, not just for their swimming, but for their manners and their kindness.

When I hear that, it truly shocks me. I don’t think children should swim to become Olympic athletes, but because it’s a life skill.

We live on an island. We have rivers in our country.

Swimming is one of the only sports that you will use for the rest of your life, and it could potentially save your life.

The programme focuses on younger children.

Why were you not drawn to coaching older competitive swimmers?

Because that is coaching and not teaching. I’ve spent so much time in the company of elite swimmers.

I wanted to get back to the love of swimming. I want to get young children to love swimming. I love seeing their faces when they’re in their armbands and they’re learning to swim. They can’t swim, but they love it! That’s what it’s all about for me.

Once we’ve taught them to swim, if they want to take it to the next level, I hope we will have given them the tools to go on and do that.

We will have given them good technique and a love of swimming.

It baffles me why parents aren’t taking their kids swimming. My parents made me learn to swim, not so I would win medals, but so I would be safe when I went on holiday. They knew I could save my own life and also save someone else’s too.

My programme isn’t about creating future Olympians, it’s about giving kids a life skill and the fun.

I’m not fussed about the glamour side of being a ‘celebrity’. When I hear that someone like Isobel has been inspired by me, or that a child has got into swimming because of me, that’s what it’s all about. I want to me a good role model and inspire kids to get involved in sport.

Potty training can be one of the most stressful stages of being a parent but a new, beautifully illustrated and easy to use book, ‘How to Potty Train’, by Judith Hough and Diane Titterton, aims to make it simple and even enjoyable for parents and children. Here they offer some helpful advice for parents embarking on training their child.

When to begin?

Parents are often blamed for potty training happening later and lasting longer. But we, and many health professionals, believe that one of the main reasons this is happening is because of the over-use of disposable nappies.

While they are great, they are so absorbent and dry that they mask the signs that children are ready to start potty training. This means that children wear them beyond the age of two, which is the best time to potty train. In fact, if potty training is started much later, it can be more difficult and take longer because children find it more convenient to let a parent clear up the mess than have their play disrupted to go to the toilet.

Potty training isn’t something children will do by themselves; it has to be taught, like brushing teeth and preparing for potty training is an important first stage.

Parents can start preparation from when the child is around 18 months. There are a number of ways to do this, including starting to change the nappy in the bathroom as this is where grown-ups go, and saying when a nappy is wet and when it is dry to help them learn.

e s o t mofight their mletethem Are you forever rushing into school to talk to your child’s teacher, or phoning other parents to talk about playground squabbles?

Think again, says Joanna Moorhead, a mother of four daughters.

One of my daughters is disgruntled. I am, she says, a bad mother. “Other mums support their children,” she says. “When they have a problem, the mums go into school to talk to the teachers. You never do that.”

She’s not entirely correct; I’ve had children at school for the last 15 years or so, and there might have been one or two occasions when I’ve gone in to talk to a teacher or a head outside of parent-teacher meetings. But I could certainly count those times on the fingers of one hand; and, thinking about it, probably even on one finger.

I hope I’m not a bad mother; and I know there are some problems – and bullying is foremost among them – when a meeting with a teacher has to be arranged, and fast. But bullying apart, I believe that my daughters are better helped if I hang back from making appointments, and arm them instead to negotiate their own issues, and fight their own battles, at school.

Why so?

Well, the raison d’etre of parenting is to make your child independent: and it seems to me that if I wade in at every opportunity to smooth my child’s path in life, I’m not helping her to learn to do it for herself. And what message does it give if, when she tells me about a problem she’s experiencing, my response is to say ‘I’ll come in to talk to your teacher about that’?

What it says is: you can’t sort this out for yourself; you’re not smart enough or capable enough or eloquent enough. You can’t do it, but I can. And that doesn’t help my daughter develop those skills, and it doesn’t help her become experienced and confident at learning to problem-solve for herself.

Sometimes, over the years, my daughters’ problems have been significant ones – and certainly many of them have seemed significant to my daughters, even if they didn’t seem all that important to me. On at least one occasion, the problem has been a clash between them and a teacher, and listening to the story it’s been difficult not to agree that, yes, it sounded as though the teacher was in the wrong.

But this is what I tell my daughters: teachers are only human. Teachers, like everyone else in the world, have some people they like better than others. So of course it’s possible that a teacher might not favour you, might even pick on you, because he or she doesn’t like you. And, yes, of course it’s a terrible shame if you end up with an unfriendlyseeming teacher in a subject you really love.

But rather than race in to school to have it out with the teacher, I tell my daughter to find a way of dealing with it; and if possible, I help her work out what that might be. Could she start the ball rolling on building a better relationship with the teacher in question by being nicer to her, or by working harder in the subject, or by making more contributions in class? Because the truth is that, all through life, there will be individuals who will seem to stand in the way of what we want – and learning to work with these people, or round them, is a hugely important life skill.

Talking to your child about what’s going on will also help her process her own feelings; and again, this is an important learning curve.

own battles someone has got it in for her, but maybe just that the teacher or the other child has issues in their own life. And instead of encouraging your child into negative feelings (“that teacher/child has always been a total pain, I’ve been saying it for years”) turn things round into something positive (“everyone has bad days; what could you do tomorrow that could start to improve this relationship?”).

Similarly problems with other children: I long ago made a resolution never, ever to get involved at parental level over my daughters’ squabbles. Not only is life far too short, but more importantly, learning to get on with their peers is what childhood and adolescence is for.

None of this means, by the way, that I’m abdicating responsibility for how my girls behave. It’s just that talking to other adults isn’t how I believe my offspring will learn to treat others well; that comes, I think, from modelling what I hope are good relationships in my own life, and in listening to the issues they have in their lives (when they want to talk about them) and helping them find a way of dealing with them.

So it’s really important to make time to listen when they’re experiencing problems at school; and it’s crucial to validate how they’re feeling, to reflect back that I understand their worries and can see that it’s a genuine issue.

But what should happen next is far more about equipping them to go back into school and work out how to put the problematic relationship on track, than it is about grabbing your coat and racing in to try to solve the difficulties yourself.

Depending on the age of the child, realise that this moment might be something that they will always remember – the time you told them that you, mummy and daddy, were going to live separately. It is therefore critical that the news is conveyed with caution and this is what we shall be looking at here.

Here is what you will need to keep in mind and to have in place when and while you are breaking the news.

Choose the right time You know your children best so you will know when the right time is.

However, before bed is not really a good idea as this means that they are left with their own thoughts through the night, not the best time to digest such news. You want them to be able to come to you through the day with any questions they may have. Of course they will still think about it when the lights are out and for a long time coming but let’s reduce the pain and stress as much as possible.

Tell them together wherever possible This may sound obvious but I have heard of cases where one parent takes it upon him/herself to talk to the children without the knowledge of the other. If you cannot tell them together for whatever reason, do let the other parent know what, when and how you are intending to tell the children and as you tell the children, do let them know, from the start that their father/mother knows that you are talking to them.

Agree on what you will be telling them and how you will be saying it As we all know, words carry a lot of power and prepare yourselves for questions.

Some questions to anticipate: Why? • Do you not love mummy/daddy any more? • Where are we going to live?

• Am I changing schools? • Will I still see daddy/mummy?

•

• Most importantly reassure them that it is not their fault in any way. Really make sure that they get this. Contrary to popular belief, not all children blame themselves but it does happen. You might have to revisit this with them again and again.

• Be honest. If it’s a trial separation then let

them know, if it’s definitely going to end in a divorce then let them know that too. Do not, under any circumstances, give them false hope. It is not fair on them to have to relieve the whole thing again, once they realise that you will not be getting back together ever again. Do not promise them ANYTHING. If you don’t have an answer then let them know.

• Tell them when you are both calm and have the time to sit through any questions or concerns that they might have. Please don’t rush through it.

• Tell them when you are somewhere safe, somewhere calm and preferably somewhere familiar to them. This way there are neither new nor

noisy distractions. They can concentrate on what is going on here and now. Don’t make it a “special” occasion i.e. take them to the cinema, get them whatever they want and then out to lunch in their favourite restaurant and break the news in there.

They don’t need any associations with the news i.e. they don’t need to always see a Pizza Express or a Zizzi restaurant and “remember the time when…”

• This is one of the times that you will need to be totally present with your child. Watch them as you speak.

Watch their body language and their facial expressions. They can tell you a lot about

what is going on within them. Are they fidgety, avoiding eye contact, fighting back tears, curled up? Sometimes these and other behaviours will give you a cue on when to reach out to them physically.

“Come here Tom, you look like you could do with a hug right now.” There are some children who might feel that they suddenly need to look after you – “Are you alright mummy/daddy?” Don’t let them parent you -this could just be their way of avoiding hearing, processing and dealing with their own anxieties, fears and worries and displacing/transferring them onto you.

• Whatever you tell them make sure it’s age appropriate and use age appropriate words and language.

Little ones might not understand a whole account of what is going on while teenagers may need more information.

• Be prepared to have them come to speak with you at the most inconvenient time...yes, children have

a way of finding the strangest time to want to discuss the most difficult things; when you’re running late for instance. Bear with them. The timing may not be the best for you but it is for your little one.

• Do not, under any circumstances, tell the children to keep what is happening at home to themselves.

This is very heavy news for a child to carry. You have off-loaded onto them, they should be able to do it too, to whomever they chose. They need care, attention and support from you and others around as opposed to them looking after you and your secrets. Anyway divorce and separation is like pregnancy, you can only keep it a secret for so long.

Eat together There are so many proven benefits of eating a regular family meal together, from better manners to happier kids. Turn off the TV and mobile phones and concentrate on talking, laughing and sharing – even if it’s only once a week, for Sunday lunch.

Make one night of the week Family Games Night The humble board game has many benefits - it brings the family together, it teaches sharing, counting and turn-taking, and most of all it’s fun! Wean the children off their screens for one night and get them around a table, and you should soon see an improvement in everyone’s mood.

Stop shouting!

No-one likes to be shouted at, and no-one likes to live in an angry atmosphere, so make the change yourself.

Resolve to keep your cool and talk out any problems.

Anger only breeds resentment, which can lead to long-term family rifts -

talking, in contrast, leads to better understanding and closer families.

Focus on the positive Resolve to look on the bright side in 2014 – it’s better for you and sets a great example. Seeing the silver lining to every cloud helps people cope and doesn’t need to be unrealistic.

Get out in nature It’s been proven that playing and learning outdoors has profound benefits for children, but most of them don’t have the freedom that was taken for granted just a generation ago. Get outdoors as much as you can (why not join the National Trust and take advantage of their gorgeous grounds?), and improve your family’s health and

wellbeing. You could even take a leaf out of the book of Tim and Kerry Meek, from Nottingham, who set their two daughters (aged 8 and 10) 100 challenges, such as canoeing down a river and sleeping under the stars. Their inspirational blog is at dotrythisathome. com.

Take on a charity challenge Give any fitness goals a boost by getting the family involved in a team challenge for charity. Not sure what to do or who to support? How to have a proper

holiday when you’re parents Everything changes when you have children, and nothing more than your annual holiday. But there are still ways to feel as though you’ve had a break, says mother-of-four Joanna Moorhead It’s still got the same name, but once you’ve got children your fortnight in the sun isn’t really a holiday any more. Not a holiday as you once knew it, anyway. Gone are the days when you could laze around a pool all day, with no bigger decision than how early in the day to have your first beer; gone, too, the days when you could party through the night and stay in bed until 11am if you wanted.

Now once you have kids, what a holiday actually means is more work than usual, with a different backdrop. Why more? Well, there are new hazards to negotiate, especially if your children are tiny (windows they could fall out of, swimming pools they could fall into, the need to be on constant watch for different dangers).

And, unlike at home, you don’t have your usual safety nets in place to make things easier: no childminder, no friends round the corner, no teenage babysitter down the street, no playgroup .

What’s a time-starved couple, who still like the idea that a holiday might deliver them some time together a deux, some time alone to ruminate and read, and the occasional opportunity to try out watersports or the spa, to do? The good news is, there are ways round the difficulties. The caveat is, none of them are problemfree.

Solution number one:

Take the grandparents The pros: They’re free! Grandparents pay their own way on holiday (well, most do) – and some are even going to treat you quite a bit while you’re away. I’m joking, of course: grandparents are a cost-cutting way of making your holiday more like a holiday; but the main advantage of them is they genuinely love your children, and they’re going to enjoy being with them, and vice versa.

The cons: Not everyone has a great relationship with their parents or parents-inlaw. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself whether you’d have holidayed with them before you had kids. If the answer is absolutely not, maybe think again.

Solution number two:

Have a holiday with another family The pros:

You can’t get out as much once you’ve got kids, so taking friends means you’ve got built-in entertainment. If you’re self-catering, you’ll find you can get a better deal on a luxurious big property – your money goes further, in other words. And, of course, the big advantage is that your kids will have friends too.

The cons:

You thought you knew your friends but believe me – you’re going to know them a whole lot better once you’ve holidayed with them. And you might not like everything about them. In fact you’re almost guaranteed to have the odd quibble – and maybe an all-out row (especially over children and how you deal with them). Are you sure your friendship can stand it?

Solution number three:

Go somewhere with a kids’ club The pros:

A holiday with built-in childcare is ideal for families who don’t want to take extra people with them, but who really want some ‘me time’ and some ‘couple time’ as well as plenty of time with the children. A kids’ club will provide supervised activities for the children for part of the day or on some days of your holiday: usually, they’re organised by age group, and what the activities consist of will depend on the ages and stages of the children.

A kids’ club has the added advantage of giving your children the opportunity to make new friends, and these friendships can spill out of the kids’ club to provide playmates for your children when you’re by the pool or on the beach as well.

The cons:

Kids’ clubs don’t have to add hugely to the expense of a holiday, especially if your children are past babyhood (clubs for infants invariably cost more because of the higher adult-to-child ratios). Many campsites, in Europe as well as in Britain, have excellently-run kids’ clubs, some on a drop-in basis, others bookable in advance (it’s important to be very clear about availability, because the last thing you want to do is book somewhere with a club and find out when you arrive that there are no places left). If you’re looking for a holiday with a kids’ club, do as much research as you can into exactly what’s provided: the key ingredient is that your children enjoy the club, and want to go there.

> How to help your child overcome wetting the bed

Wetting the bed has been the hardest childhood ailment for my children to grow out of. Banishing that wet monster did not come easy and we are not alone. Although all children eventually gain bladder control at night, they do so at different ages, and many children over the age of five still frequently wet the bed. In fact, around 1 in 7 children aged five, and 1 in 20 children aged ten, are frequent bedwetters.

Why children wet the bed is hotly debated. The majority of bedwetting is inherited. For three out of four kids, either a parent or close relative also wet the bed in childhood. Other causes are overactive bladder syndrome (involuntary passing of urine), or not enough hormone that regulates urine production.

Top Tips

Researchers have found that deep sleepers are more likely to wet the bed, as the brain doesn’t get the signal that the bladder is full. Children

> Make the bed in several layers, alternating a fitted sheet with a waterproof pad. This allows you to quickly and easily remove the wet items and avoids the need to re-make the bed > Leave dry pyjamas and towels out. So that a child can find them easily > Make sure there are no hidden fears or problems about getting up at night. For example, fear of the dark or spiders, getting up from a top bunk, etc. Try leaving the bathroom light on and keep a clear path to the bathroom. > Protection. Use waterproof covers for the mattress and duvet, and use absorbent quilted sheets. A moisturiser cream is useful to rub on the skin that is likely to become wet, to prevent chaffing and soreness. > Set a reward for your child of getting up at night to use the toilet. Instead of focusing on making it through the night dry, help your child understand that it is just as important to wake up in the night to use the toilet > Bedwetting can damage the child’s self-image and confidence. Prevent this by being supportive and reassure them that bedwetting is common and that they will overcome it > Try to be sensitive to any family or school disruption that might be stressful to your child. Do not tease or allow siblings to tease a child who has wet the bed > Encourage your child’s co-operation to be dry at night.

Give simple explanations about what is happening and the bladder works. Go to the toilet before going to bed. > Encourage your child to help change any wet sheets.

This will increase their awareness and may give them extra motivation for them to get out of bed and go to the toilet to avoid the chore of changing the sheets.

Starting to wet the bed especially after being dry can be due to emotional problems such as stress and anxiety.

Although rare, constipation, diabetes, or an infection can cause bedwetting.

Experts agree there is no one single cause of bed-wetting, and there are a number of methods that can help.

Drinking & eating - “Avoid or

limit foods that are spicy, or high in sugar or fat, including fizzy drinks,” says Alyson Carter, a Registered Nutritional Therapy Council Practitioner. “These foods can irritate or inflame the bladder, loosening the muscles, making it harder for a child to keep control.” Fresh foods, and calming foods such as oats, are recommended. Alyson also advises restricting fluids from around 1½ hours before bedtime.

Support -

Parents may be embarrassed to broach the subject, but your GP can take blood and urine tests to rule out any illness or infection, or refer you to a clinic. “We went to see our child’s teacher,” said Sarah, with 7 year old Isabella “and discussed how children asked and went to the toilet. We asked her to help ensure our daughter went to the toilet regularly.”

Exercises - There are specific

exercises that can strengthen or expand a child’s bladder. “Our doctor suggested that when my son needed to toilet, I make him wait at least 10–20 minutes longer. This helped his bladder expand,” said Lisa, mum to three boys. Another exercise is when they are on the toilet have them go, then stop for a few seconds, then go again, so that they are strengthening the muscles.

Lifting & night pants Waking your child to go to the toilet, and wearing night pants can increase confidence and help for sleepovers.

However some believe these should be avoided because they interfere with the child’s individual motivation to wake up and use the toilet.

Medical treatment - In persistent cases, desmopressin, a manufactured form of the hormone that decreases urine production, can be prescribed.

The effects are short term and the

problem likely to reoccur when treatment is stopped.

Complementary & alternative therapies - Several complementary

and alternative therapies have been tried including acupuncture, chiropractic care, and hypnosis. While some parents have reported great improvements it is not a fix all.

Behaviour therapy - For younger

children motivating them with a sticker chart and rewards is effective. Selfawakening therapy helps older kids recognise when their bladder is full. A simple self-awakening routine may be just before they go to the toilet during the daytime, they lie down in their bedroom, pretend to sleep and think about their full bladder and needing to go.

Re-training - Bedwetting alarms specifically help train your child to wake when they have a full bladder.

The alarm’s sensor detects dampness and eventually, the child’s brain learns to pay attention to bladder signals and wakes up naturally before wetting the bed. “They have been so easy to use, the girls had no problem with them and the message really got through,” said Kim, mum of two daughters. “The results were amazing. Not every child will react so quickly, but I would highly recommend giving it a try,” Sam. There is no doubt bedwetting feels embarrassing to talk about and it can be stressful, but every year 15 percent of children who wet the bed, become dry, with no intervention. They will all outgrow it eventually, but if you and your child are motivated to get dry, choose your method and stay positive.

Half Term Fun at Stockeld Park Once again Stockeld Park will be opening its doors for February Half Term. Amongst the fun to be had will be ice skating on real ice all week, culminating in a Disco on Ice on Friday evening. With licensed café and the promise of loud music and flashing lights it’s a great way to liven up a cold winter evening.

As well as skating you’ll be able to enjoy a stroll through the Enchanted Forest, enjoy the maze and indoor play – all guaranteed to keep the kids happy during the school break.

Skate sessions run daily from 10.30 am with Friday’s disco running from 6-8pm. Entry tickets including skate hire are £12 and all activities excluding skating are £8. Young skater sessions will also be available.
