A strange thing has been happening in my neighbourhood and I’m sure it has been in yours too. Friends have been seen looking at their wrists intensely and pacing around a lot – sometimes round the block, sometimes on the spot. It turns out they’re counting steps and it’s all becoming very competitive.

Hating to be left behind in both distance covered and in owning any fancy new gadget, I’ve now purchased a wristband to see whether I can shift my activity level one notch up from sluggish to functional and maybe one day – active?

I received plenty of advice – most of it positive. But one or two people reckoned it was just a gimmick and all I need is a bit of self-discipline. It’s funny though; I can feel myself wanting to hit my step target each day – just having that goal and a group of other people reaching theirs is spurring me on to do better. Which is surely no bad thing?

Right – I have another 3,000 steps to do before I can finish for the day - I’d better go and pace around the kitchen!

Brackenfield pupil Evie Paizis aged 7 has been awarded a very special Heroes Award for fundraising for the Red Cross Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa.

In July of last year Evie decided she wanted to buy Christmas presents for the patients at the hospital, some of whom live in extreme poverty and have never received a gift. Evie raised a fabulous total of £210 by running a cup cake stall, a lemonade stand and selling her old toys at a boot fair.

Evie then went to Cape Town with her family and purchased three huge trolley loads of toys, games and art supplies and took these presents to the hospital.

Evie was presended with her special award by David Stephens for her “exceptional fundraising efforts”. She then had the opportunity to hand out the gifts, help the children open them and even spent time teaching one girl how to loom band!

How to organise summer holiday childcare

Worried how you’ll juggle work with childcare over the never-ending summer holidays? Relax – there are plenty of options to ensure you’ll still be employed come the first week of September…

Looking after your children during the summer holidays is no easy feat for any working parent, with many mums and dads resorting to booking their annual leave separately to ensure someone keeps an eye on the kids.

But it doesn’t have to be that way – regardless of your budget, there are many affordable solutions to keep those wages coming in while your little ones enjoy the summer break.

A win-win situation; your child gets to spend the day with one of their friends – plus you save on childcare costs! Make sure you only ask mums you feel confident leaving your child with – and who your little one feels comfortable around – and take a little gesture of thanks over at the end of the day, such as a small box of chocolates. However, most mums might instead prefer a ‘play date swap’ in return, where they look after your child one day in the week and you look after theirs another.

Open most kids’ school bags towards the end of term and you’ll find half a dozen leaflets offering discounted daycare for specific age groups and boasting a number of fun activities. Usually catered to fit around school hours, they are often based on themes to appeal to your youngster, with football, science, dance and drama top of the hit-list. Run privately or by your local council, this competitively priced option can be booked on a daily or weekly basis and is a fun-filled way for your little one to meet new friends and gain skills in the process.

Working from home Last, but by no means least, is the hope your boss might be sympathetic to your situation and agree to let you work from home every now and then. Explain your childcare struggle as soon as you can, asking if a day a week might be an option over the holidays before giving them time to think about it. If they agree, make sure you complete all tasks assigned to you on time – regardless of the distractions that come with a demanding child at home! Not getting your job done at home will soon be picked up by management, meaning you’ll most definitely be refused if you ever broach the subject again!

How much free childcare am I entitled to?

All three and four-year-olds in England receive 570 hours per year of free childcare.

This can be in a preschool, nursery or with a registered childminder and is normally taken as 15 hours weekly over 38 weeks, but there’s often flexibility on this.

Speak to other local parents about their experiences and read Ofsted reports for the nurseries/ preschools you’re considering. Really though, there’s no substitute for taking a proper look around, meeting staff and seeing what your own impressions are.

How many hours a week?

You don’t have to use up the full entitlement of 570 hours and could send your child for fewer if you think 15 hours a week is too much for them initially. Some parents find it works well to start off with just a couple of mornings weekly and build up to more (you will often be able to pay for further hours beyond the entitlement).

Staff will be very aware that young children may need help getting used to a new place and people and so should have some sort of settling in procedure. If you’re especially concerned, speak to them and see what their advice is – you may even be able to stay with your child during the first few visits.

Most parents agree that getting young children involved in sport from a young age will help them to keep fit and get into the habit of enjoying regular exercise.

How to get your little ones involved in sports clubs and which outdoor activities to choose from.

It’s important for children to get a flavour of a range of sports available and decide for themselves which one they prefer. Sport should always be fun, especially for small kids, so to help you decide which one to introduce your child to, here are five outdoor options they will love:

Football There are a number of clubs around the country that offer coaching during the

school holidays for boys and girls aged from five to 11. These are usually a morning or afternoon class where young children are introduced to the basic skills of the sport.

Rugby

Firstly, don’t panic: the first years of rugby are not about scrums, mauls and tackling and you don’t need to worry about the complicated rules of the game either. Boys and girls alike are encouraged to play a simple, non-contact game together involving tags, in which tackles are replaced by touching a player or removing a tag from their clothing. The focus here is on developing passing and running skills.

Tennis Children from three years old can learn the basic rules and skills of tennis using smaller courts and nets and with child-sized rackets. Some clubs will also have squash and badminton courts, so your child can try out a range of games with friendly coaches.

Hockey For children, the game will be much gentler than that for adults and sticks and pitches are smaller. Some clubs have a game called “Quicksticks” which is suitable from seven years, which is a four-a-side game that can be played anywhere and uses a bigger ball for safety.

Multi-Sports

If you are not sure which sport to choose, look out for multi-sports sessions run by companies or local authorities where kids can try out a variety of sports such as athletics, rugby, football, netball, tennis and cricket. These are often available in the summer holidays and are a great way for kids to find out what they really like.

We then come together to say hello and complete a warm up to songs. Using hand apparatus we stretch out gently and encourage children to do activities that can strengthen muscles carefully. Then we move onto an apparatus circuit whereby children are asked to try out physical challenges using star stickers as reward system. We end our sessions with a cool-down to some calming music and another piece of hand apparatus, before finishing with our magic bubbles.”

Letting Go

Discussing bereavement with children

The subject of death is a sensitive one and the grief caused by losing someone special, whether they are a family member, friend or pet, doesn’t discriminate between race, status, gender or age. The truth is that, whilst everybody’s personal circumstances are unique, losing a loved-one hurts. It can be hard to come to terms with, especially for young children who may not understand the concept of death.

Teaching children about these matters is something that is easy to shy away from. The fact is that, sadly, many children do experience a loss and it is important to help them during this time This can be really difficult for parents or carers if they are grieving too, so finding a way to experience and deal with the grief together can be extremely healing.

A really healthy way to do this is through reading with your little ones. Special books that deal specifically with bereavement do so in a sensitive and truthful, yet heartwarming way. Although it’s tough to face these hard moments in life, the gentle nature of these books mean that children can translate lessons learnt in the stories into their own lives, meaning they can begin to accept the death and move on.

Some of our favourite books on bereavement include stories with bright, captivating pictures (great for younger children), which give them an overall positive message to take away. These stories can be moving, so you may need a tissue.

Parties can go with a swing if you choose a theme your little ones can have fun with.

From fancy dress costumes to themed plates, cups and decorations, here are some great ideas for a themed children’s party.

Invitations: Create a treasure map by drawing a rough

Invitations: Whether your child loves Frozen, Mickey Mouse or Cars, create an invitation to your Magical Kingdom using stickers of favourite Disney characters and glitter.

Wear: Encourage kids to dress as pirates and give each a bandana or eye patch to wear as they arrive.

Wear: Most kids will have a Disney costume or two lurking in the dressing up box. Say that dressing up is optional and have a few accessories that kids without costumes could wear such as paper crowns and a sash made from coloured paper.

Play: Fill a wooden chest (or cardboard box painted to look like a treasure chest) with torn up newspaper and pop in some wrapped small gifts for a lucky dip.

Play: Create a Disney piñata by covering a balloon with papier maché and

map of your street and put “X marks the party spot” where your house (or the party venue) is. A suitably pirate-inspired poem would be a good addition with plenty of “aaaaaahhhhhhhs!”

Eat:

cutting a little opening in the top to put in some treats. You could turn it into a Mickey Mouse head, a character from Cars or a simple balloon shape with some Disney characters pasted on it.

Eat: Serve drinks in mismatched teacups for an Alice in Wonderland party, make cucumber sandwiches for a Princess theme and create cupcakes in Disney cupcake cases.

Send them home with a treasure chest party box containing a piece of cake and a fun gift like an inflatable sword or pirate stickers.

If your little guests don’t have costumes, why not create simple paper or felt masks and add a badge with each child’s name and their super power on them.

Wear: Ask the kids to dress up as if they are going for afternoon tea at a posh hotel. Girls can wear pretty dresses and boys can put on smart trousers and a shirt.

Eat: Make some colourful cupcakes and finish them off with cake toppers

Eat: Make some dainty sandwiches with the crusts cut off, with little cakes and serve them on vintage mismatched cups and saucers. You can even buy cardboard three-tiered cake stands.

Create a super hero obstacle course in the garden. Kids have to crawl beneath ropes, through pop-up tunnels, in and out of boxes and over big cushions. with the words “Boom!” “Pow!” and “Zap!” on them. Create food and a birthday cake in your child’s favourite character’s colours.

Party bags: Little bags can be filled with a piece of the cake and some jungle stickers, little rubber snakes and other animal toys.

Invitations: Why not create an invitation that looks like a big clown’s shoe? Or even go for a circus ticket theme.

Wear: Kids can all dress as circus folk using garments they may already have at home; ballet costumes double as acrobats, riders can wear jodhpurs and all of the kids can be clowns with some face paint.

Play: Buy some clever modelling balloons and have a practice before the kids arrive. Play tumbling games and give a prize to the winner.

Eat: Think of food you find served at circuses; make popcorn in the microwave and have hotdogs and burgers in buns.

The more organised you are, the smoother the party will run - so it’s best to create a rough plan that contains enough activities to fill the entire party (don’t forget to allow time for food and cake). Remember, it’s much better to have prepared more activities than you find you actually need on the day than to run short.

Ages 6-9

Most children in this age range enjoy races, silly games, puzzles and creative fun. The games and activities you choose need to provide them with more mental and physical challenges than those within the 2-5 age range.

Treasure hunts – a fantastic activity for this age range, and you can find a wide selection of ready made themed hunts at Quests Online.

Pass the parcel – is still popular, and can be made more fun for the older children by the addition of forfeits in each layer; for example, “hop around the circle until the music stops again”, “Say “Red Lorry Yellow Lorry” a fast as you can 10 times”, “pretend to be an animal”, “Rub your tummy and pat your head”, etc.

Crafts – a good activity if the children you’ve invited like them. You can find lots of ideas and ready prepared kits at Baker Ross. Make sure you protect your table/surfaces.

Musical statues – still very popular with children in this age range.

Pass the Balloon – a silly game that children in this age range really enjoy.

Pin the tail on the Donkey - very popular in this age range. You can easily theme it by creating a variation; for example, pin the smile on the Lego Minifigure, pin the eye patch on the pirate, or pin the tiara on the princess.

Sleeping lions – a quiet game that always gets lots of giggles in the end.

Wink murder – another good circle game.

Pinata – very easy to sort out. Make sure you allow plenty of space for the children to “swing” and collect the prizes.

The Bean Game – a silly, active game that does need a bit of space for the children to run around.

Sports day races – if you are able to have the party outside, then most children enjoy a range of silly sports day races; for example, the egg and spoon race, wheelbarrow race, threelegged race, dressing up race, or an obstacle course. It is possible to bring some of these races inside if you have enough space.

Corners – a fantastic active game that involves music and can be easily themed. You need quite a few guests to make it work well though (otherwise it is over too soon).

The Doughnut Game – a messy, silly game that is lots of fun. If you are going to play this game, remember to find out whether any of your guests have food allergies.

Ages 10-12

In my experience, the pre-teen age group enjoy activities/games that are silly and highly participative.

As well as the games listed below, they will often enjoy some of the games from the 6-9 age range; for example, The Doughnut Game, Wink Murder (in this age range, they often “die” quite spectacularly), Corners and the Sports Day Games/Races (the sillier the better).

The Chocolate Game – this game moves quite fast, and if the doubles are coming along too often you may need to be prepared to change the rules (maybe only swapping for double 1s and double 6s) so that someone actually gets to eat some of the chocolate. If you have a large group of children, it is usually better to have two sets of dice going round the circle. Don’t forget to check food allergies.

Musical Dress Up – similar to musical statues, but when the music stops everyone has to find and put on a certain piece of clothing (for example, a scarf, sunglasses, a silly hat, etc.). Make sure you hide these items in plain view, but remember to have one less than the number of people playing at each stage.

Balloon Stomp – a great, noisy game that everyone enjoys (best played outside, if possible).

Cotton Ball Transfer – a funny game that works well with a smaller group of guests, and also makes a great sleepover game.

Gift Unwrap – this variation on pass the parcel is quite popular with this age range.

Malteasers/Skittles game – another old favourite that makes everyone laugh.

Linking games to themes

If your party has a theme, if can be quite easy to link this to your games and activities by: • Using themed music.

• Selecting themed crafts/colouring/ treasure hunts.

• Using themed wrapping paper for pass the parcel/gift unwrapping.

• Using themed props for Corners, Pin the … on the …, and balloon games.

• Creating themed forfeits.

• Changing a small part of the game/ activity; for example, you could play sleeping princesses, or have a House Elves collecting socks race.

There are loads of options for simple, fun party games that do not need a lot of preparation or props. A simple search on the internet can help you to find more ideas party games/activities and themed variations.

How to teach our

Girls usually get off to a flying start. They talk early, are sociable from a young age and often throw themselves into school. But somewhere around the age of nine or ten, their confidence can take a nose-dive. They become confused by mixed messages, which tell them they can be anything, but the most important thing about them is how they look. They are baffled to be told they should always try their best - but at the same time should not stand out too much.

This is also the age when they are also heading into their most vulnerable phase of life - their teen years – when they will be stepping through a minefield of sexual politics, played on phones and over the internet But as the author of the new book Girls, Uninterrupted, I know that we can create a strong core of self-belief in our girls’ formative years, they will be better able to resist the pressure to behave in ways which are not always good for them later on.

My daughters are not weak and defenceless and neither are yours. But in a challenging world full of mixed signals about how they should look and who they should be, here’s FIVE ways to make girls stronger when they need it most.

START EARLY:

The tween years – the ages between seven and twelve – offer a critical window when parents can help girls develop an unassailable sense of self. our daughters’ peers begin to drown us out.

If we really work at staying connected to our girls in those years, we have a better chance of being able to guide them when things get really tough when they are teens.

KEEP TALKING:

The good news is that the latest research shows the best defence against bad influences is you, the parent. One upside of the sexualised culture is that fewer topics are off-limits when we talk to our children – and in my book Girls, Uninterrupted, you will see there really are age-appropriate ways to tackle every subject, from sexting to self-harming. To help make this possible, set aside – and stick to – a regular, special time for you and your daughter to spend together. Let her decide what you do together so she feels able to relax and enjoy it. Don’t lecture, and let her bring up topics of conversations that are important to her.

Resist the temptation to preach, judge or over-react, so she keeps coming back. If we really work at staying connected to our girls early on, we have a better chance of being able to guide them when things get tougher.

EXPLAIN HOW TO RECOGNISE NEGATIVE VOICES IN HER HEAD: When a girl hears a voice telling her she’s not good enough, she tends to assume it’s right. Tell her that just because she hears it, doesn’t mean she has to listen. Help her give self-critical thoughts a name so can recognise they are worries rather

than realities and that she can choose to ignore them. Show her too how to replace negative thoughts with positive ones. For example, if that inner voice tells her, ‘You can’t do this’, show her she can substitute that thought with: ‘This might be tricky, but I can learn.’

SHOW YOUR DAUGHTER HOW TO BE HER OWN BEST FRIEND: From around the age of about nine, girls can start to give themselves a very hard time for saying or doing the wrong thing.

First, tell her not to be so tough on herself – and tell her how you, as an adult, have also made mistakes. By the same token, little girls are told to love their mummies, daddies, siblings and pets – yet we often forget to give our daughters permission to love themselves too. Tell her that being her own best friend doesn’t make her big-headed – it just makes means she’s looking out for herself.

TRAIN HER TO BECOME MEDIA LITERATE: In a world where a young girls will see more pictures of physical beauty in one month than we saw in a year, girls need training to process these images. In the two minutes you take to show her how a magazine photograph of an ultra-skinny perfect celebrity has been airbrushed, you have taught her not to hold herself up to an image of perfection that doesn’t exist.

Easy steps to make your kids’ first festival a breeze

Introducing your children to all kinds of music can be a great way to give them a lifelong love of everything from folk to classical. Many of the UK’s festivals have plenty to do for the whole family and with some careful planning and by packing a few essentials, you’ll all have a great time.

Where to stay If you have (and know how to put up) a tent, this can be the most cost-effective way of attending a festival, as ticket prices can be high. Check the tent before you go, to ensure it has all its poles and pins. A good ground sheet is a must, as are camp beds or self-inflating air beds. A playpen is great for babies and small children to sleep in at night and play in the day.

Alternatively, other options, from pre-erected tents to Yurts and teepees may be provided. Take a look at the festival’s website to see what’s suitable.

If you can’t face roughing it, book a local hotel or bed & breakfast. You’ll have a bolthole should the weather turn nasty and somewhere to wash properly!

Take time to orient yourself around the site, find where your favourite bands will be and most importantly, check out where the loos and showers are. These can get very busy and there are often long queues. For small kids, take a travel potty, as kids often need to ‘go’ quite suddenly. Most festivals have a craft and activities area for kids too.

Pushchairs can be tricky to use if the ground is muddy. Carriers are more portable and take up less space...

With small kids, try to camp in the family or quiet areas so that you won’t all be kept awake by people coming back to their tents (in all conditions) through the small hours.

Setting up

Car parks can be quite a way from camps, so try to ensure that all gear can be put into a couple of backpacks for you and your partner to carry – and still have a hand free for the kids. Some

festivals rent a wagon to transport your stuff, which you can then use to pull the kids around in.

What to eat There are usually lots of food stalls but bear in mind they can be pricey.

If you want to do your own cooking, invest in a camp stove.

Easy, one pot meals are best, like soups, stews, rice or pasta, Freeze some home made meals, then just before you leave, put them in a cool box together with drinks and milk.

Take lots of snacks too, in case cooking or queuing for meals takes longer than you think!

Safety Kids should have your name (not theirs) and number on them in case they get separated. Write it on their arm, or buy luggage tags and attach them to their clothes and bags. Talk to them about how to behave should they get lost. Make sure your phone is charged, so if your kids do get separated, you are able to be contacted.

Dress your kids in bright clothes so you can spot them and take a photo of them each morning, so if they go wandering, you can remember how they were dressed and show others.

Don’t take valuables and keep things you can’t leave behind, such as phone, keys, your purse and credit cards, with you in a day pack all day. Never leave them in your tent.

Fancy dress Many festivals now have a fancy dress parade as part of the fun, so take costumes. Some things can be made on-site at a craft stall. Face paints are great to pack, as are glow sticks and bubbles.

I have tried climbing once before as part of a teambuilding exercise so I was aware that firstly it would be a great activity to do as a family and secondly, that I was going to ache afterwards!

Both proved to be true but not without a great deal of fun to go along with it.
