i and welcome to the winter edition of your local Families magazine. This issue, although brought to you in November, has a distinctly festive flavour to it, as you’ll perhaps have noticed from our front cover. We’ve gone all theatrical. Oh no we haven’t, oh yes we have… you get the idea! There’s loads to see and do in the region over the next eight weeks. From swimming choirs, (sic) to cracking pantos, shopping galore or meeting Santa, Families has it covered. Here is the perfect opportunity to indulge in some guilt-free shopping as it’s all in a good cause with funds raised on the night going to the Dunfermline Women’s Aid charity. re you a switched on individual who values the natural world? If so, the Ecology Centre in Kinghorn would like to hear from you. The centre is recruiting new committee members who have the skills and experience to contribute to the governance of the organisation. Established in 1998, the centre provides education to over 6000 individuals annually, supporting over 4000 volunteer hours and welcoming around 20000 visitors to the site. The Ecology Centre uses direct experience of the natural world to change people’s lives. Young people with challenging behaviour build their self esteem and life skills through their programmes, children discover the natural world, sometimes for the first time and volunteers can improve their health, career chances, confidence and circle of friends through being involved at the Centre.

Birth Baby and Beyond Better beginnings with the Synergy Centre Being pregnant at Christmas doesn’t mean that you can’t join in the fun Here are 5 tips to help you get the most out of the period. 1 Reduce stress The run up to Christmas and of course the day itself can be a whirl of preparation and pressure. If you are pregnant you may have the added issues of tiredness and aching back/hips which creates increased stress in the mum to be, and of course the baby. Try to minimise it by enlisting as much help with jobs as possible, get the family involved, do shopping in advance or online and stick with simple food. Your inner Nigella might just have to sit it out this year! 2 Sit down, feet up Socialising and shopping mean extra time on your feet which may result in swollen ankles. Take seated breaks when out shopping and demand a seat at parties. Support tights can aid circulation and it helps to get your feet higher than your hips. 3 Watch your back The changes in your body during pregnancy such as softened ligaments, extra weight and strain on muscles
can all make your back more vulnerable to injury. Try to avoid lifting too much by getting things delivered or enlisting help bringing things in from the car. If lifting is unavoidable, remember to bend your knees and split things into lighter loads where possible. 4 Be kind to yourself Don’t try to do it all, make sure you get enough rest, taking naps if necessary during the day, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Take some time for yourself and when possible try to maintain some exercise such as walking, swimming and pregnancy yoga. Keeping yourself fit will help energy levels, boost stamina for labour and may help with getting back into shape after the birth. 5 Let others treat you When people ask for gift suggestions for you, suggest pregnancy specific body products, or a specialist treatment voucher from Synergy Yoga and Therapy Centre. Mercat. The Mercat shopping centre is a must for seasonal shoppers with children. From Sunday 27th of November, Santa will be in his grotto EVERY DAY at Just Kiddin. Just Kiddin is the recently opened children’s play area in the Mercat that offers a fun and safe play environment for under 8’s, a cafe and a very handy crèche facility - even more handy at Christmas time.

Noël. Every family has it’s own way of celebrating Christmas and the build up to Noel is very much part of the pleasure. Now you have your own children it’s time for you to make your own traditions. Reindeer Parade Make a date with a Reindeer on Sunday 27th November! At noon, Santa will be pulled on his sleigh from Thistle Street by his team of reindeer through the centre of Kirkcaldy. A ten year triumph! T
en years ago, in 2001, the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy whispered into being with a new Principal, Barbara Brett, and now it shouts a celebration of a decade of speaking, acting, learning, developing and growing in confidence - and in numbers! The Academy which started 2 years ago with 70 students now has over 350 in many venues across the region. There are currently classes in Kinross, Kirkcaldy, Cupar [adults too], St Andrews, Newport on Tay, Dunfermline and Perth. Classes are for all primary aged children and in recent years, older children have continued on to form the Youth Theatre. ‘In the past year four students have celebrated ten years with the Academy, along with me”. laughs Barbara. A further class for adults has also been established, and welcomes students of all ages who are looking for a fun activity, to make new friends, to boost their confidence, and to learn some presentation skills. Ten years have seen many changes - the world has altered. Barbara insists however that although the curriculum has been revised to accommodate changes in our lifestyles, the

his Christmas as always, I am going to dig out my Good Housekeeping Nov 2003 edition hopefully in October (not sure about divulging this vice, I’m not a hoarder, just a bit of a recipe collector!) to start making the homemade chutney; Clementines in Grand Marnier syrup and pecan pralines. I’ve already got my Phoenix snowflake cellophane and my pretty bargain ribbon from McEwan’s summer sale. This year, Christmas 2011, I am actually going to DO the homemade edible gifts that are “A joy to give, a pleasure to receive” apparently – I wouldn’t know. The chutney has a 1 month maturing date and a 3 month life expectancy so, hopefully, as you are reading the Christmas issue, my chutney should be wax topped, prettily ribboned and lovingly labelled in my kitchen cupboard. I will be cringing as I know that, since Nov 2003, I have planned to do this, that’s 2 years pre-children, and it is, at the time of writing, yet to happen. I have friends who are bought and wrapped by Halloween. I just can’t do it. I can’t get organised for Christmas before Christmas Eve. Honestly we have a family tradition of decorating our tree on Christmas Eve! Like most traditions, this happened out of necessity as I don’t get round to buying the tree until the 23rd! If you can brave it, it’s great - you get the biggest tree ever for a knock down price - just be prepared not to see out the window until New Year! So I’m enrolling my two little helpers

A. FYG is an

The idea behind Find your Gorgeous is that everyone has ‘a gorgeous’ to find, it’s just a case of unearthing it. The vast majority of people tend to wear the same things all the time and really lack confidence in putting together a look that suits them. I really enjoy clothes and shopping and creating that look so it just made sense to offer this as a service. Q. Do you see yourself as the Nicky Hambelton Jones of the Fife area? A. Ha! I’m a blend of Nicky, Trinny, Susannah, Gok….all of them. They all have their own style and quirks but central to all of their work is showing their clients how fantastic they can be, helping them realise that they can look and feel great without a huge amount of effort or cost. The main difference is that I can do that locally. I’m here in person, in Fife or Edinburgh, or the Borders. Q. Who could benefit from a consultation? A. If you have ever felt ‘I wish that Gok would come and sort me out’, then this is for you. Anyone who is fed up with their wardrobe, feels they don’t know where to start with what to wear, feels frumpy and lumpy and dowdy, then I can help you discover what styles, colours and shapes suit you and your lifestyle. Q. What are your credentials as a fashion fixer? I gained my BSc Clothing at Herriot Watt’s Faculty of Textiles. This exposed me to technology and design aspects of the clothing industry. After graduation I moved to London where I worked in design and in buying for companies like Burberry and Principles before returning to Scotland to settle down as a family. Textile, colours/ pattern/image/style/clothing are my true passions. Combined with her style consultancy business, Karen Naysmith runs fun shwopping events in Edinburgh and Fife. I can then delegate ribbon tying and thankfully, now Gabe can write, labelling too (although I’m not sure how sterile the jars will remain)… But regardless of our flaws, I‘m sure that if we actually deliver our hand-wrapped, handmade pleasures by Christmas, they WILL be joyfully received. I’ve set myself a hard task –remember this is the woman who spends part of Dec 23rd shopping for Christmas dinner and a tree and the other part on the phone all evening to her cousin and friends to wish them a Merry Christmas and apologise for missing the last post again! I have a collection of M&S Christmas cards for the past 10 years half written in the attic – NY Resolution 1: recycle!
