Worcester Cathedral climb for Cool 2 Care In November an intrepid group of Worcestershire staff and PAs took part in a fund raising event at Worcester cathedral. The team’s challenge was to climb the cathedral tower to scale the equivalent heights of some of the world’s tallest mountains. Using the narrow, steep and very windy stairs of the 14th century Worcester cathedral tower, the team reached the dizzy heights of Mont Blanc by lunch time and finally ended at the top of Mt Kilimanjaro, some 5,980 metres, by the end of the day....! The amount raised was over £800. It was a great day and a fantastic opportunity for staff to spend some time with the PAs who do a brilliant job with the families they support. www.cool2care.co.uk

Sixth form girl leads the way for all boy team in championship karting Zoe Wenham, a 17-year-old student from Prince Henry’s High School in Evesham, has taken on quite a challenge this year. She will be leading a group of twenty-one boys, seven teams of three, as they compete to win the British Schools Karting Championship 2012. “I’ve been involved in karting since I was nine so I’m very used to being in a maledominated environment,” says Zoe. “My confidence has rocketed since I got involved in motor sports. I find it easy to get along with boys and tell them what to do.” In preparation for the championships, Zoe will be running sessions on how to operate a kart, how to be successful on a track and discuss winning tactics. “What is great about karting is that boys and girls can go head to head on the track. Karting is about skillful driving and having an awareness of what’s going on around you.” She insists that being involved in the sport has really helped her performance at school. “The exhilaration of racing around the track is great for getting the adrenalin pumping. The competitive experience is very exciting and motivating, which has helped me achieve more in my lessons and in other aspects of my life.” The BSKC is a team-based karting championship for school and college students aged 13 to 18 years. It provides young people with the opportunity to get involved in motor sports and represent their school. More information is available at www.bskc.co.uk January – February 2012

Although by taking this route it has taken Tom several years to achieve his HNC, he has been able to work and earn a decent salary the whole time which meant at aged 22 years he was able to purchase his own house and has achieved a high qualification without obtaining any student debt. Tom has worked as a carpenter in restoration work of old buildings, secured a promotion as an assistant site manager doing new build developments and has gained loads of experience and hand on skills in the construction industry When the recession hit, Tom was unfortunately made redundant but due to his qualifications and experience he was able to secure another job as a working site foreman. It was after this that Tom decided he wanted to set up his own business in Carpentry so in March 2010 he went on a business start up course, bought a van and then set up Thomas Weston construction services. Tom has been subcontracting to a national decking company and building up his own client list for carpentry and joinery work since then and his business is going from strength to strength with most of the work he has secured, being on recommendations from his previous employer. Tom has had no regrets about the path he has taken, completing a trade has meant he has always been able to secure work, even during difficult times and he is now his own boss and building a successful company. Next year, Tom has ambitions to go to Australia for 18 months to travel and work in Construction. There is a high demand for all qualified tradesmen in Australia, especially carpenters and who knows where the future will take Tom, but it certainly looks very bright. King’s St. Alban’s, Worcester – ‘Something New at Key Stage 2’ On Saturday 24th September the Sports Hall at King’s St. Alban’s was full of Viking Shipwrights, all working hard to complete an authentic Viking Longboat, large enough to sail. Year 4 children from St. Alban’s were joined by children from other schools, who are hoping to join us in the next year. The children, dressed as Vikings, made a great team and all were prepared for the hard labour of ship building. They also enjoyed making a compass, constructing battle shields, stitching sails and weaving on a loom. The children’s hard work was rewarded with a traditional fish and chip lunch so that they could refuel before going off on a Viking journey in the newly built ship. Following on from the success of this Viking Day we shall be holding a workshop to build an Egyptian Pyramid on Saturday 21st January from 10.30 am until 2.00 pm. Lunch will be provided. This workshop is suitable for children currently in Year 2. Please telephone 01905 354906 or email: ksa@ksw.org.uk to book a place.

St Mary’s awarded international school status by British Council

GCSE Tuition – Book now and get a head start! It may seem a long time until GCSEs, but the time between now and May will really fly. Every year we get last minute calls from panicking parents or students, and sometimes all our tutors are booked, or there simply isn’t enough time for tuition to make a real difference.

St Mary’s Worcester has been awarded an International School Intermediate Award by the British Council in recognition of the school’s commitment to instilling a global awareness to the learning experiences of the pupils. St Mary’s is part of a large international foundation and has sister schools in almost every continent as well as here in the UK. The school encourages strong links with its sister schools, regularly hosting exchange visits to the Mother House in St. Sauveur-leVicomte, France and raising funds for another sister school in Kerala, India. More recently a new link has been forged with Kaimosi Girl’s High School, Kenya, as part of the International Inspiration ‘GETSET’ London 2012 programme, with girls learning about one another’s cultures through a pen friend scheme. Another project to receive recognition by the British Council was the senior school’s cross curricular project ‘Letters to Japan’ which took place in March 2011. In Geography lessons pupils learned all about the region and the effects of the Earthquake and Tsunami. Then a former Japanese student was invited into English lessons to help the girls write letters of support to victims of the disaster. Whilst in the Preparatory Department, an ‘African’ themed week in the summer introduced the girls to all aspects of African culture through music, art and dance. Commenting on the award, Headmistress, Mrs Jawaheer, said: “We are delighted that the strong international dimension to both our curriculum and extracurricular activity has been recognised in this way. We are committed to preparing girls to become the women leaders of tomorrow. Developing a strong sense of global awareness and empathy for other cultures and traditions is an essential preparation in developing one’s own identity and becoming a caring and effective global citizen.” www.stmarys.org.uk

If you feel your child might need some help to achieve the grade they want – whether it be to get a C, or to aim for an A* - it is far better to start early so the studying can be spread over a few months rather than crammed into a few weeks. You can always ring me now and get in touch with a tutor, then agree a time in spring to start lessons. It always amazes me how much progress children of all abilities make in terms of both competence and confidence once they start one to one tuition; that is what makes it so rewarding. Happy New Year! Brain Games for your Child

By Robert Fisher

Robert Fisher draws on his 30 years of research into children’s thinking and learning to provide over 200 games to help your child build their own reasoning and number, language and social skills. The games all involve interacting with people, rather than electronic screens, helping to create lasting bonds and encourage speech. The games are for children aged 0-10 years with many suitable for older members of the family to join in too. Play is an essential part of any child’s development. It can stimulate their thinking and help boost their brain power to give them the very best start in life. By playing with parents, grandparents and carers, children can build their social and creative skills and get the mental stimulus that develops their brains. This is an essential guide for raising a happier, brighter and more sociable child.

Brain Games for your Child is published by Souvenir Press and available from Amazon. ISBN 978 0 28564 043 6

Education Book Review by Karen Craven Monkey Bars and Rubber Ducks By T M Alexander Nothing could make Keener bunk off school, so why is he slipping out of the school gates at lunchtime? Nothing will get Fifty in the river at camp so why is he standing on the river bank ready for action? Being a Triber is sometimes tough, but it’s always worth it. This is the fourth book in the children’s series about the Tribers and is written by T M Alexander who started writing just 2 years ago. The first Tribe book Jonno Joins won the Hull Children’s Book Award in 2010. Monkey Bars and Rubber Ducks is about a group of children, The Tribers – Bee, Jonno, Keener, Fifty and Copper Pie and their adventures. My stepson Ethan aged 11 really enjoyed it as “it is true to life. They get up to loads of “i mischief and trouble in and out of school – m a bit like the Famous Five”. Both Ethan aand I thought that the Tribers website www.tribers.co.uk was “cool” as you get w tto know a little bit about all five characters and also about the author herself. We would thoroughly recommend this book to children aged approximately 8-11 years.

What’s in a Nursery?

What’s in a n

By Joanna Parry So, your little one’s growing up and it’s time to start thinking about nurseries. Day nurseries, nursery schools, pre-schools – nurseries come in all shapes and sizes and navigating your way through them can be daunting. Whether you’re going back to work or just want your child to benefit from all that nursery has to offer, here is our guide to finding the best, and right, nursery for you. Studies have shown that children who attend nurseries can be more confident and often go on to do better at school. A good nursery will prepare your child for those first few nervewracking weeks at school, plus most children thrive on the stimulation at nursery. Another advantage is the year-round care they offer, and you know your child is being looked after by qualified staff who won’t become ill and need time off work – at least not all at the same time!

Open usually 8am-6pm, day nurseries are a good option for working parents as many will take babies from 3 months. The day follows structured activities interspersed with naps, meals and outdoor play. Day nurseries offer continuity of care and your child doesn’t have to stay all day – many day nurseries will do half days or you can collect early.

Nursery schools Nursery schools are often more formal in the way they structure sessions. They usually take children from 2.5-3 years and provide a grounding for starting school, teaching letters, shapes, numbers and sometimes even early-stage reading. Nursery schools give children the opportunity to make friends of the same age as most require children to do either 5 morning or 5 afternoon sessions, so the same children will be there everyday. They are often smaller scale with a personal touch, too, but perhaps are not so convenient for working families. January – February 2012

ursery?

What’s in a Nursery?

Nursery classes in schools The first step in ‘real’ school life, these can be excellent for children who are ready for school and structured, educational play. They are convenient if you already have siblings at the school, but again sessions are often only 3 hours long which may not be practical. Nursery classes in independent schools are more likely to offer full school-day sessions but nursery classes attached to state schools are free! It’s important to remember that a school nursery place does not automatically guarantee a place in reception.

Pre-schools and playgroups Playgroups usually take children from 2.5yrs, offering short sessions to ‘ease’ your child out of the home and into a more sociable learning environment where they can play, learn and have fun. Playgroups have a varied mix of toys, games, singing, story-time, arts and crafts and usually an outdoor area. Parents are encouraged to be active members of the playgroup and their small-scale settings are less daunting for shy children. They are also excellent value for money as they tend to be not-forprofit and are sometimes staffed by volunteers, with parents staying to help out.

Montessori nurseries and Steiner schools ■ Montessori teaching is based on a method which fosters and guides children’s in-built curiosity for learning. In a Montessori nursery it is the children themselves, who choose from the range of activities offered. Using sensory materials to provide intellectual, physical and psychological stimuli, Montessori schools aim to develop the child’s whole personality. ■ The aim of Steiner schools is to foster imagination and creativity; they don’t introduce formal education before the age of six, concentrating on creative play rather than the ‘three Rs’. Both these options can be great, but might not prepare a child who is going on to a particularly academic school (with entrance exams perhaps) but they do offer a more holistic approach to learning.

Workplace nurseries Much sought-after, workplace nurseries provide full or parttime childcare, but think about the location. If your journey to work is an hour long your toddler may not appreciate the trip home at 6pm and a nursery around the corner from home might be a better idea.

SureStart Children’s Centres A number of Centres offer affordable, flexible childcare for up to 10 hours a day. Worth considering! NURSERY CHECKLIST Once you’ve found a nursery, go and have a look. Go back again if you’re still not sure. A good nursery will welcome a visit and might even let your child join in. By watching the other children you’ll get a good idea of whether it’s the right environment for your child. January – February 2012

Madresfield Early Years Centre Madresfield Early Years Centre has scooped two National Awards. The Centre is based on a working Dairy Farm in the village of Madresfield near Malvern. The 188 place Centre is run by Mrs Alice Bennett, a farmer’s wife, and offers top quality care and education to children as

well as dance and gymnastic classes and after school and holiday clubs. The Centre has been rated outstanding by Ofsted on five successive occasions. Madresfield Early Years Centre was announced the national winner of the Indoor Learning Environment competition at the Nursery Management Today Awards in London at a glittering ceremony on Saturday 27th November where Mrs Bennett and Mrs Veronica Dowding were presented with the award by Children’s Presenters – Dick and Dom. This award closely follows the National Learning Outside the Classroom Presentation at Condover Hall in Shrewsbury, where MEYC won second place, in the Pre School Category for Outdoor Learning. Mrs Bennett said “I am delighted that MEYC has been recognised for the wonderful, unique and diverse opportunities that are provided for the children in our care. I would like to thank all of the Staff and Parents that have contributed to making these two awards possible. It is their dedication, creative thinking and collective energy that makes Madresfield Early Years Centre the outstanding setting that it is today. With a daily focus on physical and outdoor education as well as a rich and diverse range of exciting learning opportunities that far exceed the Early Years Foundation Stage, we are pleased to be inspiring and nurturing children of the next generation. It is an honour and privilege to work alongside such a talented and creative Staff Team who engage so fully with parents, children, community and our beautiful local environment. We are proud and delighted to be recognised in this way and will endeavour to maintain our high standards to ensure that all of the children reach out to fulfil their potential.”

The judges at both competitions were impressed by the commitment of Staff to maximise learning outdoors in the woodlands, farm environment and village opportunities locally as well as in their creative use of the extensive indoor facilities. They were impressed with the purpose designed gymnasium, planetarium, music room, indoor sandpits, beautiful murals and practical pet areas and cookery rooms. They were also amazed at the 14-seater horse drawn wagonette (designed by Staff and made in Poland) that transports children all around the farm and village to take part in such activities as pond dipping, stream play, conker and blackberry hunting, potato digging and apple picking to make juice in our portable apple press. A great deal of energy and enthusiasm is devoted to ensuring that all children are fully engaged and excited by their education… so much so that children can’t wait to get here in the morning each day, and often are reluctant to be taken home at the end of their session! The Judges also liked the fact that MEYC opens its doors to outside groups and many visitors, thereby sharing their facilities and good practice with others in the locality and sometimes international visitors. Support for new mums

So, you’ve had a baby. You’re a new mum and of course you’re tired, but you’re also elated and amazed at this tiny new being that has entered your life. You spend every waking hour staring in adoration at their tiny little toes and gorgeous little mouth. Your exhaustion doesn’t matter as you drift from day to day in a haze of milky delight. Dance classes for all ages across Herefordshire and Worcestershire Mini Movers, Dance Clubs, Youth Dance, Contemporary, Breakdance, Street

www.dancefest.co.uk 01905 611199

Or maybe you don’t. If you are like me then those first few weeks, even months of being a new mum are the hardest days of your life. Not only are you exhausted after weeks of unbroken sleep but you’re also struggling with breast feeding and getting your baby to take a bottle, your baby is unsettled and suffers from reflux and why oh why won’t it just go to sleep? Even if it’s your second or third baby, it’s still just as hard. You’ve got baby blues, or perhaps even post-natal depression. Now the most important thing you can do, even if you don’t feel like it, is to get out there, meet some other new mums and get some support.

Support groups If you’re tired, struggling to bond with or feed your baby or have a touch of the baby blues, there are plenty of support networks out there. •

Health visitors – health visitors are there for the welfare of babies and their parents, and your health visitor should support you in whatever way they can. They should get in touch with you in the first few days of you returning home from hospital, but if you don’t know how to reach your Health Visitor your doctor’s surgery will be able to tell you. www.nhs.uk Home-Start is a charity that helps parents by providing volunteer support. Whether you’re struggling to look after your baby or suffering from postnatal illness or even just feeling lonely and isolated, Home-Start can help. Volunteers offer regular support, friendship and practical help to young families under stress in their own homes. The visits are flexible and you decide together what to do during that time. Call 01905 29377 for Worcestershire and 01432 371212 for Herefordshire. www.home-start.org.uk Children’s Centres (also called the SureStart programme) have been developed throughout England to help parents, with many offering support groups for new mums as well as stay and play sessions, baby clubs, postnatal and breastfeeding classes. Find your nearest centre at http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Parents . NCT runs Bumps, Babies and Beyond groups across the country, where you can make friends and share experiences with other new mums, and support is provided. www.nct.co.uk Drop-in centres, playgroups and baby groups offer vital postnatal support and advice. Most importantly, they don’t cost more than a pound or two.

Meet a mum and join a class Whether it’s a picnic in the park, a coffee at Starbucks or a mother-and-baby group it’s important to get out there and meet other new mums. The NCT arrange regular coffee mornings and local playgroups often arrange get-togethers outside of the playgroup. You don’t have to ‘join’ these groups or come every time, but you’ll be sure to get a warm welcome and you will find these meet-ups invaluable, I promise you. Alternatively, join a class. This will give you an opportunity not only to meet other mums but also to bond with your baby. 14

Support for New Mums Start with a baby massage class, where simple massage techniques help stimulate your baby’s senses. Many local health services run free massage classes and there are plenty of private classes around too, often including postnatal support alongside baby massage. Baby massage has also been proven to help enormously with mums suffering from postnatal depression. www.calmcuties.co.uk. Mum and Baby Yoga is a great way to encourage baby-parent interaction. It involves gentle post-natal yoga for mums to get back into shape and lots of play and fun with the babies, using gentle yoga movements to catchy songs and rhymes. Suitable for babies from 8-10 weeks to 8-10 months. BWY qualified and experienced teacher. Contact Anna-Sofie Warmington on 07720 344075 or email aawarmington@yahoo.co.uk. Activity classes. These don’t have to be expensive, so shop around. Choose from music classes to drama to sensory stimulation classes – even for newborns! It’s a great way to get out of the house, meet other new mums and compare notes. Please find on the right a selection of ideas for mums and young babies.

Postnatal depression Postnatal Depression (PND) is often not fully understood by mums who experience it, yet one in three mothers will suffer from it. Becoming a parent can be a shock and it is perfectly normal to feel emotional, vulnerable and sensitive after your baby is born. Some mothers may feel confused about their feelings – they feel they should be overjoyed and instantly fall in love with their baby but this is not always the case, especially if you’ve had a difficult labour or a traumatic delivery. Baby blues typically occur between 3-5 days after the birth, and one theory is that they coincide with the hormonal changes that occur as the breast milk starts to come in. Another theory is that they are due to the ‘come down’ after the effects of endorphins, or a sort of physical shock reaction after the upheaval of birth. You may feel weepy, irritable, have a low mood and feel that you lack confidence in being able to look after your baby but these feelings usually subside after a week or so. However, postnatal depression is more serious and must be treated immediately. Symptoms of PND can include: • sleeping problems • crying a lot • not eating or over-eating • physical pains such as headaches or stomach pains or blurred vision • a lack of motivation to get up and do anything • a constant sense of anxiety, sometimes escalating into panic attacks • a feeling of being lonely or isolated • having difficulty concentrating • feeling overwhelmed and unable to cope • having no interest in sex • feeling guilty about everything and wondering if you are a bad mother • being overly protective of your baby • feeling emotionally disconnected from your baby • having frightening thoughts about harming yourself or your baby or about bad things happening

If you feel any of the above, it is important to seek professional help. Your GP may suggest antidepressant medication and/or counselling and your health visitor will know about local postnatal depression support groups. You can also go to www.apni.org or www.birthtraumaassociation.org.uk for information, support and advice. Also, tell your family and close friends, as talking about your feelings is part of the cure.

Treat yourself If you feel up to it, get a babysitter for an hour or two and treat yourself to some quality ‘me’ time. Try a day spa for a pampering and revitalising treatment, or many of the ‘Yummy Mummy’ clubs that are springing up across the country offer spa treatments as well as a range of classes and support groups for new mums, usually with crèches onsite. Alternatively, take a walk in the park with a hot chocolate. It will do you the world of good! January – February 2012

The Alps in August

Switzerland isn’t just for skiing: in fact, the Alps can be one of the loveliest places in Europe for a summer holiday en famille. As well as beautiful weather, there’s a wealth of sporty things to do for both smaller children and teenagers. Chilly Powder runs its Morzine chalet hotel through the summer as well as the winter, offering the same attractions (professionally-cooked food, childcare etc) and with the emphasis on comfortable living alongside a wealth of outdoor pursuits. Morzine is an eight-hour drive from Calais, or fly to Geneva and hire a car; the chalet has 17 bedrooms and there’s even a hot tub in the garden. Perfect for: sporty families with children in different age ranges Midsummer prices: from around £120 per adult per night, discount for children, half-board Website: www.chillypowder.com

Hideaway in Robin Hood’s forest What child wouldn’t be excited to be holidaying in the centre of the wood made famous by the legendary Robin Hood? And what parent wouldn’t be happy to join them, now Forest Holidays are extending their venues to this one? The new lodges, which open this spring, will be set in the middle of 3,300 acres of forest, and include basic cabins to de luxe ‘golden oak plus’ cabins with their own hot tub. Loads to do for all ages – Sherwood Forest has a glorious labyrinth of cycle trails, plus farm parks, arts and craft centres and play areas. Perfect for: active families in search of a change from Center Parcs (and more of a bargain) Midsummer prices: From around £30 per person per night Website: www.forestholidays.co.uk

Affordable luxury – and abroad too Glamping is the way to go: much more reasonable prices than villas or hotels, and a wide range of family-friendly sites. And what’s new on the glamping block for 2012 is an ever-widening range of topnotch accommodation: for 2012, Select Camp has a new range of what it’s calling its ‘lodge suites’ featuring a canopy bed, free-standing oval bath, fully-equipped kitchen, shower and toilet – and a separate junior lodge tent next to the main suite. Select Camp also has four new sites, three in Italy and one in Spain – and coming soon, a brand new website which should make browsing and booking a lot easier too. Perfect for: Budget-conscious, adventurous families Midsummer prices: from around £24 per person, per night Website: www.selectcamp.co.uk

Away from the crowds in Norfolk If you love Cornwall and Devon, but are frustrated by the prices and the crowds, why not head instead for Norfolk? Cottage prices for midsummer are cheaper, it will take you less time to get there and it’s much easier to get to and from the beaches and other attractions because the roads are far less clogged. For a comfortable, child-friendly cottage look on the Recommended Family Holidays website under the ‘East of England’ tab. Poppyland Cottages, for example, have a range of properties dotted around a series of beautiful villages, and within easy reach of lovely Blue Flag beaches – and everything on the website has been checked for family-friendliness. Great pubs for lunches and suppers out, too – and Norfolk is also a very good option for families who love cycling. Perfect for: Families with young children wanting to get away from the crowds Midsummer prices: from around £21 per person, per night Website: www.recommendedfamilyholidays.com

The word ‘barton’ means ‘a small country estate’ in Devon, so head for Libbear Barton and what you’ll be buying is a slice of laid-back country high life, half an hour from the nearest beach. Libbear Barton is a 40-acre farm with four properties: the Georgian farmhouse (sleeping up to 14) and three cottages. Rent one if you’re holidaying with your immediate family, or rent two or even all of them if you’re bringing your extended clan or another family or families along (the maximum number of guests, if you take all the properties, is 39).

The whole place is kitted out with underfives in mind, so you won’t need to worry about cramming the car with clobber – even buggies are provided. You won’t need to leave the farm every day, because there’s plenty to do there – an adventure playground, indoor swimming pool, woodland and meadows, a fishing lake, games room and loads and loads of play space. For those days when you do want to venture out, north Devon is teeming with family-friendly things to do, and the beautiful beach at Bude is only 15 miles away.

Camping meets boutique hotel Molly Dishwasher isn’t just an unusual name for a holiday experience – it’s an unusual experience, too. A comfy double for you, bunk beds for the children, all squeezed into a small but beautiful space with oodles of special little touches. Young children adore staying somewhere different, and they love pulling their parents into their adventures – which is what makes Molly Dishwasher such a hit. Plus breakfast included, a BBQ and food on hand, and loads of places to explore in the area including Drusilla’s Zoo, Battle Abbey, Hever Castle and endless beaches. Perfect for: families with small children who want a pint-sized adventure without having to travel too far. Midsummer prices: Around £20 per person per night Website: www.mollydishwasher.com

Are we nearly there yet? Did you enjoy the Christmas holiday road trip travelling around the country with your children seeing relatives or not?! Holidays often lead to interminable car journeys as families undertake the regulation visits to far-flung relatives. With car sickness and endless cries of ‘are we nearly there yet?’ – travelling with small children can send you screaming for the hills. Author Ben Hatch offers some tips to help make the experience less painful for all the family. 1)

Always carry treats. Travelling with children minus treats is like walking through a vampire-infested grave-yard after midnight without a wooden stake. You might survive but why take the chance?

2)

Enthuse your kids about where you’re going although never oversell the destination as we did visiting the Wensleydale Cheese Visitor Centre. On the strength of a Yorkshire Tourist Board leaflet featuring Wallace and Gromit sticking their thumbs up, we rashly promised lifesize models of the cartoon characters wandering around. The only thing Wallace and Gromit related to was a chalk outline of them on the café’s specials board. We’d driven two hours to a working cheese factory, where the kids had little interest in the processes of milling and tipping.

3)

4)

18

Forget I-spy. It’s over in seconds as there’s nothing consistent to see from a speeding car window except the road, other cars and the sky. Instead play I-don’t-Spy, as in ‘I don’t spy with my little eye something beginning with P,’ where the p is then capable of being anything in the known universe unobservable from your car. Our kids once spent two hours guessing the word gnu. Adapt well-known children’s stories into tales involving your children themselves. You can do this by replacing the main character’s name in a classic fairytale with your child’s name so that for us it became, for instance, Phoebe and the Three Bears (‘And then Phoebe tried the medium-sized bowl of porridge…..’) or Hansel and Phoebe (‘And the wicked witch told Phoebe, I will eat your brother be he fat or thin.’). The thrill of an ego-centric toddler hearing themselves thrust into unlikely adventures involving beanstalks, glass slippers and evil witches buys valuable time.

5)

In-car DVD players are a must. They’re available for under £100 but don’t buy the cheapest. We did and it kept disconnecting from the cigarette lighter and returning the film to the beginning. Consequently despite watching Finding Nemo 10 times during our 8,000 mile trip round Britain the kids are still unaware that Nemo was eventually reunited with his father.

6)

Lie about how far it is. As a rule of thumb under 50 miles is always “round the corner.” How far dad? “Round the corner.” Over 50 miles then divide how long it will take to get there by 4. Thus an hour becomes 15 minutes. You must divide by 4 again if this stills meets with disappointment. In fact repeat this division by 4 until your child says, “That’s around the corner.” www.familiesherefordandworcs.co.uk

7)

Colouring-in books and pens provide a welcome distraction. Although be careful – our daughter, protesting about an arduously long drive through the Pennines after a day out at Ostrich World once employed the toddler equivalent of self-harming. She drew all over her face and arms in black felt tip. Indelible pens are a bad idea.

8)

Not to have a sat-nav today is a bit like being a sailor in the 14th century trying to round the Cape of Good Hope without a nautical chart. It’s insane. Put it this way, if I had a choice – my brakes or the sat-nav – I’d gladly drill a hole in the driver’s footwell and start using my feet to slow down. Having a sat-nav means brain cells required to remember to turn right or left at particular junctions are more usefully re-directed towards establishing just who in the back was the first to slap the other one round the face with the Corfe Castle activity sheet.

9)

Finally, if all else fails, and it probably will, we suggest turning Classic FM to maximum volume and kidding yourself you aren’t muffling the kids’ din with an even louder one, but that you’re actually educating them about Haydn.

10)

Good luck.

Are we nearly there yet? – 8,000 misguided miles round Britain in a Vauxhall Astra is a true story of two adults, two kids, one small car and five months on the road. When Ben en and Dinah saw the advert looking for a husband and wife team with young kids to write a guidebook about family travel around Britain, they jumped at the chance. Bored, broke, burned out and turning 40, thee trip conjured up naïve visions of staring moodily across Coniston Water and savouring Cornish pasties. The reality included bizarre encounters with celebrity pyjamas, deadly snakes and a friend of Hitler. Are we nearly there yet? – 8,000 misguided miles round Britain in a Vauxhall Astra by Ben Hatch is published by Summersdale and is available from all good booksellers or via www.summersdale.com £8.99 ISBN: 978 1 84953 155 9 January – February 2012
