On the 26th November 2011 Little Bo Peep Nursery in Inkberrow held a Charity Quiz night to raise funds for Worcester Snoezelen. The local independent charity provides a multi-sensory environment for people with severe learning disabilities. The event was held at Inkberrow Village Hall and Claire Hull (Little Bo Peep Nursery), Jane (Worcester Snoezelen) Christina Weaver (Little Bo Peep Nursery) was extremely successful with about 70 people attending. The Quiz was hosted by Tom “Quiz” from the Rose & Crown in Webheath and the winning team received Birmingham City Football Club tickets. ‘Luke Truth’ and local band ‘The Players’ provided fantastic live music. “ We’ve just had the most amazing weekend in London. Shrek was absolutely brilliant, Poppy and Tom were thrilled with their Shrek ears and thank you for the rest of the goody bag. We had an incredible view of the stage and the show was amazing. We had a lovely meal at the Rainforest Cafe surrounded by the sights and sounds of the jungle. My husband, Russell, even had Happy Birthday sung to him! We felt so lucky to be able to stay in the hotel and the London passes were great. We went on a river cruise from Westminster to the Tower of London and then went into the Tower itself and had a really good day there. I feel so overwhelmed at how much we’ve packed into one weekend, we’ve come home exhausted but really happy! So thank you very, very much”.

News & Views – Sheep Street, Stow on the Wold Bev Clough opened Groovy2shoes in February on Sheep Street, Stow on the Wold. Bev, who has a background in Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting, was disappointed to find a lack of local independent children’s shoe retailers and decided to embark on a 10 month course with the Society of Shoe Fitters to become a qualified shoe fitter. Hence 16 months on and following a lot of hard work Groovy2Shoes will be the first ever specialist children’s shoe shop in Stow on the Wold. There are 26 bones in each foot but these are not fully developed until around 18 years of age, making the child’s foot very vulnerable in those early years. Research in the UK suggests around 70% of foot problems in later life are related to poor fitting shoes in childhood. Bev is hoping to promote foot health by working with local schools and nurseries to educate on the importance of the developing child’s foot as well as providing guidance on buying footwear. Groovy2Shoes has been very much designed with children and parents in mind. It has a funky vibrant feel and to keep children happy there are indestructible toys, a huge blackboard and an integrated train set. For parents there is much needed seating and a water dispenser as well as magazines and newspapers for bored Dads!!! www.groovy2shoes.co.uk

Inkberrow First School present ‘Zoom’

Do you want to teach your baby to swim…? Babies love water – as you’ll see from the excited smiles and gurgles around the pool. And swimming from birth in warm water is entirely natural. After all, they’ve just spent nine months in the womb! As well as being really good fun and energetic, structured lessons are a wonderfully sociable activity, and classmates often become friends and a real source of support. The uniquely structured Water Babies programme is designed to make the most of babies’ natural affinity with water, teaching water confidence and safety techniques from birth. ‘With progressive training, babies can be taught life saving skills such as turning onto their backs or, following a sudden submersion, swimming to the nearest solid object,’ comments Claire Southworth, who runs Water Babies locally. ‘And it’s so important that they do.Within the last three years, ten of our children nationally saved themselves from drowning – despite five of them being only two. Teaching over 24,000 clients each week, we’ve got the knowledge and experience to ensure our parents and babies experience something truly extraordinary,’ continues Claire. ‘As parents ourselves, we appreciate that this is one of the most magical times in people’s lives and work incredibly hard to enhance it. Finally, we’re the only swimming company to have won five national awards in the last four years. Reflecting the fact that we’re absolutely passionate about what we do.’ For more information telephone 01793 337 118, email ringaring@waterbabies.co.uk or visit www.waterbabies.co.uk.

In February the children of Inkberrow First School performed a superb production of ‘Zoom’ which is based on the well known fable “The Hare and the Tortoise”. The play is set in Evergreen Valley which would be a very happy place to live if it wasn’t for the Hare family and Harvey Hare in particular who happens to run the only bank in town. Toby, Head of the Tortoise family, and an employee, finally stands up to Harvey and finds himself challenged to a race, upon which not only his own livelihood, but that of everyone else depends. www.inkberrowfirstschool.worcs.sch.uk

Budding astronaut enjoys VIP trip to Parliament Budding astronaut Evie Sambrook, aged 9, a pupil at Malvern St James Girls’ School, enjoyed a very special visit to the Houses of Parliament on 13th December. As winner of the high profile national competition to design a future Mars Rover, ‘Calling all Mars Explorers’, Evie was invited to the launch of a very special new publication, ‘Ticket to Mars’, a magazine written and designed by the winners of the 2011 Cosmic Futures competition – another group of very talented school children! As part of the day Evie met her local MP, Harriett Baldwin who offered her own personal congratulations on winning the Mars Explorer competition. The budding space explorer also had the chance to listen to, and put her own questions to the astronaut Richard Garriott de Cayeux, and journalist and author Lucy Hawking at the Media Space event in the afternoon, organised by the Parliamentary Space Committee. Evie also attended a VIP Reception for afternoon tea where she was able to network with many MPs and representatives from the UK Space Industry. “It was very exciting meeting so many important people in one day, including the astronaut Richard Garriott – who wants to come to Mars with me; my MP Harriett Baldwin and other MPs and ministers; along with all the VIPs from the UK Space Industry – best of all I got to touch a real piece of asteroid from Mars!” said Evie. “I was even allowed to stand where the Prime Minister stands in the Chamber of the House of Commons. It was a wonderful experience that I will remember always. I have promised quite a few people that I will send them a postcard when I get to Mars!” Mrs Woodhouse, Headmistress, said “We are delighted Evie has been able to enjoy such a special day, meeting so many like-minded young people and professionals. It was a unique experience which I am sure will inspire her further to pursue her dream to be the first person on Mars!” “I was delighted to meet Evie in person and congratulate her on her huge achievement. She is such a bright spark and her enthusiasm for Space, and Mars in particular, is infectious. I am sure we will be hearing a lot more from her in the future!” said West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin.

Education Hereford and Worcester Dyslexia Association – Unsung Heros. 2011 was an important year for the Hereford and Worcester Dyslexia Association. The HWDA was originally formed more than thirty years ago by a small but dedicated group of around a dozen local people who were concerned about their children’s progress. Since then the Association has grown hugely and continues to be a shining example of how teaching workshops for dyslexic students and young learners make an enormous difference to their lives. HWDA became a registered charity in 1976 when there was little recognition of the ‘problem’ of dyslexia and by today’s standards, its causes, implications and remedies were almost unknown territory. Initially the Association organised talks with guest speakers, held discussion groups and had meetings with the local Education Authority; but there remained little in the way of direct help in schools; so thoughts turned to providing independent, specialist tuition facilities; a bold and radical step at that time. The Workshops developed and HWDA operates three very successful teaching Workshops in Worcester, Hereford and Bromsgrove, currently providing tuition and support to over one hundred dyslexic learners and employing over twenty qualified specialist teachers and tutors. 2011 celebrated the 30th anniversary of the opening of the first teaching workshop in Worcester and the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Hereford Workshop. Each of the three Dyslexia Workshops is run by a very dedicated Administrator who ensures that the Workshops run smoothly, and the needs of the pupils and

families are met. This includes hiring and supporting a team of equally dedicated specialist teachers who are all qualified and experienced in teaching literacy and/or numeracy. Pupil ages range from 7 to Study Skills groups for GCSE and ‘A’ levels, plus maths and numeracy are now taught in all three workshops. The Workshops are always fully subscribed, often with a waiting list. Before joining a Workshop pupils must be appropriately assessed and then have individual teaching programmes. Sometimes the hour long sessions, usually three one hour sessions each week at each Workshop, are shared with two pupils working together. Inevitably the Association has to charge fees but these are kept to a minimum and a separate Bursary fund exists to help in exceptional circumstances. For information about the HWDA please contact Mrs Kay Garnett on info@hwda.org.uk www.hwda.org.uk

Help Tuition Confidence is the biggest issue with most children, whatever their age or ability. Even the brightest child in a class will often struggle when presented with more difficult work: for example, common entrance preparation papers. Some of those who have problems understanding some subjects will feel they are hopelessly out of their depth as soon as they are even slightly behind the rest of the class. One to one tuition can give a child or student an opportunity to go over areas of any subject they need to at their own pace, without feeling pressurised and with someone whose focus is only on them, not the rest of the class. Our skilled tutors work with children of all ability levels and aim to build on their strengths in order to achieve greater confidence and skill. We work with students from around 7 years of age through to GCSE and A level. If you feel your child needs help to work to the best of their ability and would like to talk about tuition, with no obligation, please call Kate on 01684 562439 or email kate@helptuition.co.uk www.helptuition.co.uk

Education How much would you pay to put a hat on your head?

On the 30th of March 2012 Brain Tumour Research and its member charities will be encouraging nurseries, schools, colleges, universities, public sector bodies and office workers to make a donation in order to nominate their ‘head’ to wear a silly hat for the day in aid of the charity’s annual ‘Wear a Hat Day’. The campaign aims to raise awareness regarding the prevalence of brain tumours and the need for vital research. ‘Wear a Hat Day’ is an annual awareness day which encourages people to make donations to wear a hat to school or in the office. This year Brain Tumour Research is also encouraging students and workers nationwide to challenge their ‘head’ to wear a hat for the day. From sponsored silences to charity runs and office bake-offs, organisations around the country are being encouraged to raise money in any which way they see fit in order to sponsor their ‘head’ to wear a silly hat. Sue Farrington-Smith, Director of Brain Tumour Research, comments: “Brain Tumour Research receives less than 1% of national cancer research spending in the UK yet the deadly disease kills more children and people under the age of 40 than any other cancer. ‘Wear a Hat Day’ is a fun way of increasing awareness and getting people raising money for an often overlooked form of cancer”.

March – April 2012

Brain Tumour Research has recruited the help of Kate LangrishSmith, crowned ‘Young Hat Maker of the Year 2010’, to develop the official range of campaign hats. Instructions to make your own bespoke hat will be available to download from the website alongside another downloadable PDF which will allow you to create your own hat simply out of paper. These interactive features allow everyone to access and support the campaign and both DIY hats will be accompanied by an online instructions video. Philip Treacy, celebrity hat designer and patron to the charity, comments: “Fashion is a feeling and a mood and therefore how better to express your passion and commitment to a subject such as brain tumour research than by wearing a fantastic hat? It immediately creates a statement and it doesn’t matter what the hat is or how much it costs; everybody who gets involved will feel a million dollars on the day, whilst also raising much needed research funds and awareness.” Philip has also contributed to the campaign by providing an image of a hat that he has designed for an exclusive badge that will be available as a limited edition. This badge will be available for purchase through the website, alongside this year’s wear a hat badges which will be launched for sale during March – brain tumour awareness month. Brain Tumour Research represents the united campaign voice of the Brain Tumour Research group of 18 charities. Launched in 2009, the charity was established specifically to raise funds for brain tumour research. Two of the biggest challenges I face are gaining information about services available to Emily and finding supportive helpful places to take her in leisure time, mainly because her interests are very limited and she gets frustrated very quickly when she’s bored. Emily has to have one to one support to keep her safe at all times. I want to share with readers sources of information that have helped me and places locally in Worcestershire where we have been received warmly. Usually parents take their children to school each day and that’s how they interact – meet, chat, make friends and swap information but when you have a child with a disability they often go to school on local authority transport which means mums don’t get what I call “the school gate opportunity”! In my experience parents of children with disabilities who attend ‘mainstream’ schools do not tend to receive ‘specialist’ information regarding available services that may be open to them which seems a shame. I found out recently that The Family Information Service offers specialist advice to parents regarding all sorts of subjects relating to disability services, their age range is 0-19 years and if they don’t know then they will find out for you. Contact a Family is a wonderful resource also for parents. Locally, if parents receive direct payments to pay for support workers and they are struggling to know where to start then Cool2Care can assist with a very complicated process as can Penderels Trust. Places to go where I have found staff to be really supportive are Malvern Splash (swimming) Little Acorns (Soft Play) and The Snowdome in Tamworth (ski-ing). Ray’s Farm near Bewdley is a great day out in the countryside as is Top Barn Outdoor Activity Centre near Hallow. These are just a few suggestions that I’m hoping other parents will find useful.

Personal Tutors in the Malvern Area Key Stage 1, 2, 3, GCSE, A level, Common Entrance, Scholarship, IB. Most subjects covered, including English, Maths, Sciences, Languages, Music, IT. For information & enquiries call or email kate@helptuition.co.uk/ 01684 562439/ www.helptuition.co.uk 10

Deciding which activity to choose can be hard - consider your child’s interests and temperament but try not to label them too rigidly. Just because your child is shy doesn’t mean drama should be off the menu

Don’t limit yourself to the familiar – try something new. Even if your child shows a special talent and interest in one activity, make sure they get exposed to others too, although if you do find something your child is passionate about, don’t hesitate to encourage it

Check the fees involved – there may be hidden costs such as uniforms or costumes

If your child is a reluctant joiner, find out what activities their friends are doing. With some children, who is more important than what

It’s important that children have at least some unstructured time at home to play, relax, even get bored. Remember that a little boredom can be the fountainhead of exploration and creativity March – April 2012

Advertising in Families Hereford and Worcester has been great for Dancefest. The range of ages it covers, the areas it’s distributed to, and the articles and activities it includes, means that it’s brought us lots of new participants for our dance classes and projects. Karen is great to work with. She’s enthusiastic and understands our needs and our budget, and the interests of her readership. She works very hard at promoting and developing the magazine. It is indeed a really useful magazine for parents, but for its advertisers too! Karey Parsons – Administration and Marketing Officer, Dancefest

Olympics Interview with Sir Steve Redgrave

© Tom Hayton

Sir Steve Redgrave is one of the world’s mostt famous Olympians. Claire Winter interviewed him about the London 2012 Olympics and his life as an athelete and a dad. How did you get in to rowing? The head of the English department at my small comprehensivee in Marlow asked me if I would like to try the sport. Going out of school during school time always appealed to me. Being this country’s and one of the world’s most successful Olympians is quite an accolade – how have you managed to achieve so much? A lot of fun but hard work, dedication, focus and desire. What do you think your greatest achievement is? A combination of all the Olympics I competed at, being a consistent winner for nearly 20 years, which stands me out from almost every other Olympian. It is possible to balance family life with being a competitive athlete? Yes, I managed to balance it but it helped having a very supportive family. You took part in the cycling race, Race Across America in the summer. Are you fully recovered from the accident you had and how much money did you raise? Yes, I am fully recovered after my accident. We managed to raise about £35,000 for Sport Relief and my fund.

Do you think you are born with the desire to succeed or can you cultivate it? There are so many different factors in achieving something. I am sure it is a combination of both. The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic rowing and canoeing events are being held at Dorney Lake next year, do you think that more young people will take up rowing and canoeing because of this? Yes, definitely. After every Olympic games the intake of people taking up the sport increases. I am sure after the home games this will be even greater. What is your advice to young sports men and women who want to take up sport competitively? I think the main factor is enjoyment. The more you enjoy something the more effort you will put in and the more you will achieve. Many schools don’t hold competitive sports days, do you think we need to encourage more competitiveness in our schools? We live in a very competitive world and I feel sport helps you deal with the success and failure of life and this is something we shouldn’t be hiding away from until you leave school and enter the big wide world. How can parents encourage their children to do more sport? Most people find sport through education. But parents should play a big part in encouraging them to get involved outside school, but this is a very big sacrifice for them as well. Marlow rowing club (where you used to train) has suffered a terrible blow because of the fire in August, do you think it can recover? Yes, the club is going through a difficult time at the moment but it is amazing how much support the club has had from the local community and I am sure it will be stronger in the long term. You have just released a new book Great Olympic Moments, apart from your own, what is your favourite? It is difficult for me to pick out one because all the images mean something to me. Mark Spitz was my first awareness of the Olympic games as a 10 year old, which had a big impact on me, but I love the image of Cathy Freeman sitting on the track straight after her success at the Sydney Games. She looks like she has just lost and not won and I can empathise with that feeling. So much focus, dedication and sacrifice has gone in to that moment, but no thought has been given to what happens once you cross the line. Sir Steve has published an Olympic themed book, Great Olympic Moments. Complete with stunning, specially selected photographs, he recounts his favourite Olympic stories and reveals what it is that makes these moments truly great. All the stars of past and present are in the book. Also included are some of the more infamous moments of Olympic history, including Black Power 1968, the Munich hostage crisis of 1972, Mary Decker Slaney’s clash with Zola Budd in LA 1984 and Ben Johnson’s disqualification at Seoul 1988, to name but a few.

What mums really want for

Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day Don’t forget to mention when you telephone that you saw these companies featured in Families Hereford and Worcester magazine

by Gabrielle Starkey

Warning: This is a page for dads only – mums, look elsewhere (or leave the magazine conveniently open on this page where it might be found by your other half…)

Psst, dads – want to know what mum really wants for Mothers’ Day? Here are some ideas to show her how much you care.

Home-Start Worcester & Wychavon Goodrich House Sansome Place Worcester, WR1 1UA

Volunteering for Home-Start

A family gathering Mothering Sunday was originally a day-off from Lent, when servants were allowed to travel home to see their mums, and have a slap-up dinner together. Traditional presents were flowers and cakes – and you won’t go too far wrong if you stick to tradition. What mum doesn’t love having the family all around one table, with cake and flowers thrown in? But mum’s not making the feast, or doing the washing up – oh no. Book her favourite restaurant or pub, or make the meal yourself – and make sure you wash up afterwards.

Breakfast in bed Again, a traditional but excellent choice. Try making Jamie Oliver’s ridiculously easy American-style pancakes (1 cup each of flour and milk, plus one large egg: www. jamieoliver.com/recipes/fruit-recipes/apple-pancakes-with-the-girls) with fruit and maple syrup, add flowers and a pot of tea, and Bob’s your auntie’s live-in lover. Follow up with a family walk – or take the kids off yourself to let her really enjoy that extended lie-in.

YOU can make a difference to a family in your community. All parents know that those early years before children go off to school are vital in a child’s life and at Home-Start we believe parents have the key role in creating a secure childhood for their children. It’s just that sometimes they need a bit of help… Your help.

Call 01905 29377 or email home-startworcs@btconnect.com

Time to herself This is one thing we mums often crave more than anything, so organise her some proper “me time”. Book her a spa day or indulge her hobby (yoga/writing/crafts/cookery) with a weekend course. If she doesn’t get to see her closest friends enough, maybe you could secretly liaise with them and organise a weekend away? You’ll be rolling in Brownie points after any of these.

Time with you, alone Chances are, since the kids came along, life’s been a little (or a lot) less romantic. Mothers’ Day is the perfect time to put this right, with a hotel reservation slipped inside the card and the grandparents on standby for next weekend. Happy days all round.

Personalised works of art If home is where your woman’s heart is, then a few personal touches to beautify it won’t go far wrong. Book a portrait session for the whole family with a great local photographer or find a local service that turns an existing photo into a fantastic artwork. What woman could resist a framed print of her wedding day as a romantic gesture?

Something really unique With a little planning ahead, you and the kids can present mum with a truly unique and handmade creation. Take the children’s fingerprints or hand or foot casts, and have them made into pictures, keepsakes or jewellery – there are lots of places that do this now. Alternatively, take the kids to a pottery painting shop and have a great time making a personalised plate, mug or vase that mum will treasure forever.

Whatever you decide, we hope every mum has a wonderful Mother’s Day! Ma Mar M March arrch ch – April Ap pri pr rriil 2 2012 012 01 0 1 12 2
