Where is Santa this year in the run up to Christmas? Well, he has taken time out from his busy schedule and is visiting lots of different places in the 2 counties. We have compiled an even more extensive list than last year so you have a great choice. Your children can take breakfast, lunch or tea with him, ride on a train to visit him, see him with his reindeer, visit his workshop, experience a wonderful winter wonderland and chat to him or even search for him in historic old buildings. Do contact the venue before visiting as you may have to book in advance and please mention Families Hereford and Worcester magazine where you saw the event in the Where’s Santa? listing too. In this issue we have included a special Christmas gift guide and also Joanna Parry has written a very poignant article for an “Alternative Christmas”. However you celebrate it, I do hope you have a happy, peaceful Christmas. If you would like to advertise in the Jan/Feb issue and reach 44,000 parents then call me on 01386 791422 or email editor@familiesherefordandworcs.co.uk. Copy deadline is Friday 7th December.

The demise of the GCSE Education Secretary Michael Gove is to replace the existing GCSE exam system with new, tougher qualifications in a major overhaul of the exam system. The new English baccalaureate – the EBacc – will replace GCSEs with single, more difficult examinations in the biggest change in the system for over 25 years. The new exams are likely to do away with the existing continuous assessment modules, will reintroduce the traditional 3-hour examinations and restrict the number of top grades awarded. In fact, one of the key aims is to remove starred grades entirely and make sure that far fewer pupils win the top grades compared with the 3 in 10 pupils who currently receive As and A-stars. Teenagers will also be prevented from re-sitting individual modules and will have to retake the entire exam if they want to improve their grades. The government insists that these changes will end “grade inflation and dumbing down” and comes after both Coalition parties have shown themselves keen to see the introduction of more rigorous teaching and exams in key subjects, However they are not scheduled for introduction until September 2018.
Think about adoption Every child deserves a family, and this 5th-11th November sees the annual National Adoption Week. Since its launch in 1997, National Adoption Week has gone from strength to strength, reaching people across the UK wanting to know more about adoption. National Adoption Week is important in reminding people about the backgrounds of the children waiting for adoption and the difference adoption can make to a child’s life. It also attracts people wanting to find out about their own adoption or about a child they put up for adoption. Find out more at www.nationaladoptionweek.org.uk.
Is your school ready? This autumn Ofsted has issued new guidelines in regards to e-safety provisions in schools. From now on Ofsted will be concerned about how each school protects and educates its staff and students in their use of technology, plus ensuring there is support in place should any issues arise. Although many schools might already have existing policies in place, others will need to revise their priorities to include this immediately. E-safety is constantly changing but by empowering both students and teachers with enough know-how to identify online risks, we can make sure children, even at an early age, can protect themselves from abuse, cyberbullying and other internet threats throughout their school life and into adulthood. Education Community Support Rallied to Complete Department for Education’s Free School Evidence of Demand Questionnaires The local community is again being asked to complete Evidence of Demand questionnaires as stipulated in the Department for Education’s Free School application process, as Holy Trinity International School (HTIS) applies to become a Free School from September 2014. Speaking to families in the local and wider communities, HTIS Headteacher, Mrs Pamela LeekWright, stated: “We need to demonstrate to the Department for Education that Holy Trinity International School provides an invaluable service, and in doing so offers greater parental choice within both the local and wider communities. “I believe that choosing a school, is one of the hardest decisions any parent will have to make and Holy Trinity, which is now a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate (IB), Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Diploma, offers something unique which widens educational choice and opportunity.” Mrs Leek-Wright added further: “Parent enquiries and support clearly demonstrate a need, but we require all expressions of interest to be supported with a completed Evidence of Demand questionnaire. So please, if you have not done so already take a few minutes to submit a questionnaire, which can be either obtained from the school office (01562 822929), by email (contact@holytrinity.co.uk) or online (www.holytrinity.co.uk). All completed questionnaires need to be returned to the school no later than Friday 7th December 2012.” Additional Information: An independent day school since 1903, HTIS provides a high quality education for children from Kidderminster and the surrounding Worcestershire area and has a warm co-educational family atmosphere in which children receive a highly individual education, with students at ‘A’ level and ‘GCSE’ enjoying excellent examination results year on year. SUPPORTING YOUR LEFT HANDED CHILD
8
1 in 10 children are left handed, but many fail to get the support they need in the early years of their education. Experts say teachers aren’t given the proper training and schools don’t have the right resources. Sarah Butters is mum to a left handed daughter. She takes a look at some of the most common problems faced by left handers and some tips for helping them out.
MESSY HANDWRITING
HOOK GRIP
If you have a child who is left handed, chances are they haven’t been taught to write. Most are simply allowed to use their left hand. As the right handed parent of a left handed child I admit to having that same attitude. I now know that I was completely wrong.
Some left handers use a hooked grip to avoid the problem of smudging, and angle the pen in the same way a right hander would. This causes more problems than it solves. The hook grip becomes more uncomfortable the more you write. It leads to an overtight grip and aching hands which in turn lead to messy handwriting. The wrist should always be below the writing line. If your child is developing a hook grip, consider introducing a sloped surface to resolve the problem.
Left handers push the pen across the page, whereas their right handed friends will pull. This can lead to smudging and untidy work which in turn leads to anxiety on the part of the child. At an early stage a left handed child should be encouraged to master the correct handwriting position and paper placement to avoid problems as the writing assignments increase. The paper should be rotated to 45 degrees with the hand and wrist below the writing. Any pen needs to be held in a strong 3 point grip. In Early Years this can be supported with a triangular bodied pencil or a moulded grip around a regular pencil. If your child can get into good habits from the start of their school life, they will avoid problems when they graduate to a fountain pen and longer writing assignments.
www.familiesherefordandworcs.co.uk
ELBOW COLLISION At some point your child will have to share a desk and if they’re left handed this can be a problem. “I always end up banging elbows” explains my 9 year old daughter. “That makes my writing messy.” Your child should always be placed at the left hand side of a shared desk or next to another left hander. This gives them plenty of space to get their paper positioned correctly and avoid knocking elbows with a right handed neighbour.

November – December 2012
WHITE BOARDS They’re a teacher’s best friend but a left hander’s worst nightmare. White boards and chalk boards are a great learning tool in the modern classroom – pupils can get rid of mistakes easily without using endless pieces of paper. However, if you’re left handed you can end up erasing as you write. Good grip and placement of the board gives left handers half a chance. However if your child isn’t completing white board work quickly or neatly enough, it may not be their fault.
MIRROR WRITING I remember being hugely concerned when I discovered that my daughter had completed a Reception assignment using mirror writing. She had begun her words on the right hand side of the page and written from right to left. It’s common in left handed children and when you think about it, it makes sense. If they are sat next to a right hander, they are simply mirroring their work. Encourage them to start on the left hand side of the page by placing a coloured star in the margin as a reminder.
COMPUTERS Most ICT rooms are set up with the computer mice on the right hand side of the keyboard. This gives left handed children an automatic disadvantage because they either need to move the mouse or attempt or use their right hand. Don’t presume the teacher knows your child is left handed. Be sure to let all the staff involved with your child know they’re a left hander and will need a different workstation set up.
THE ‘RIGHT’ EQUIPMENT Many left handed children learn the basics with the wrong equipment. Give a left handed child some right handed scissors and they’ll find the blade is upside down and so they can’t see the line they are cutting. It means the child has less control and thinks of themselves as messy. This can be a real problem in the Early Years. Check your school has left handed scissors to offer your child. Ambidextrous scissors don’t exist – trust me! As they progress in writing, shiny barrelled pens are to be avoided. Make sure whatever pen you choose has a good grip so it’s easy
to hold even when hands get hot and tired. Left handed fountain pens are available from www.anythingleft-handed.co.uk. They’re worth the investment for older children as they have an angled nib.
LACK OF UNDERSTANDING As a right hander, I never appreciated the challenges faced by my daughter. Until she mastered left handed writing, she was labelled untidy in her written work and lost enthusiasm for putting pen to paper. It wasn’t until I began researching this piece that I realise how much of her attitude is linked to the hand she writes with. The bad news is she’s had a more challenging time than her right handed pals. The good news is she’s in good company. Barack Obama, Leonardo Da Vinci and Bill Gates are all lefties. Now that’s not a bad club to be in!
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE Keith Milsom campaigns for better support of left handed children in our schools and offers some advice about what to expect from your child’s school. “Despite decades of campaigning and a string of promises from government ministers and teacher training authorities, there is still virtually no guidance provided to teachers on helping left-handed children and no process for identifiying left-handers in schools. Make sure you talk to your child’s teacher to make sure they know that he/she is left-handed and may need assistance and advice. Ask your child’s teacher to talk YOU through the support they’re going to give so you can be sure they really understand. If you’re concerned, refer them to the teacher guidance sheets available from www.anythingleft-handed.co.uk. The school should have left-handed scissors available and pens that will help left-handers write in the correct style. If children are left to their own devices it is very unlikely they will find writing and cutting out easy. Apart from the practical difficulties this can mean they are working more slowly than the rest of the class and lose some of their confidence – especially if the teacher tells them off for “not doing it right”. Lefthanders can end up underperforming at school and having difficulty with written exams as a result of a lack of informed guidance at an early stage. It’s important parents keep the pressure on schools to support their left handed children.”

Alternative
Christmas
By Joanna Parry There are many reasons why some of us find Christmas difficult, whether it be the loss of a family member, loneliness or the memories associated with the season. With the shops shut and attractions closed, you can feel like a prisoner in your own home with only endless episodes of East Enders for company. But whether you want to escape the festivities or are looking for a different way to spend Christmas this year, there are plenty of

alternatives out there.
Get active and busy!
❅ Donate food. FareShare is a national charity promoting the
“A friend of mine who was single one year volunteered to help at one of the Crisis at Christmas lunch centres,” says Robina. “While we all admired her altruism, she said it was the best thing she’d ever done – rather than moping at home alone, she was helping other people, and came away appreciating what she did have, rather than what she didn’t.” While some charities shut up shop for the Christmas period, others, particularly those supporting the homeless, elderly or sick, are extremely busy, and are looking for people with a range of skills and backgrounds to do a whole host of different things this Christmas.
message ‘No good food should be wasted’. Donate food at your nearest location or help with distribution and delivery
❅ Be a DJ. Radio Lollipop provides entertainment and comfort
for children in hospitals, which is especially important over Christmas. If you’re enthusiastic, positive and outgoing why not try this
❅ Animal lover? Crisis at Christmas not only provides support
to homeless people but their dogs too. Dogs suffer equally from a life on the streets so if you’re an animal lover this could be for you
❅ Help out at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter.
Many shelters are set up especially for Christmas so they need extra volunteers to help give out clothing, look after luggage and perform cleaning and kitchen duties. Many also provide services such as hairdressing, dentistry and medical services so they need volunteers with these skills too. They even need musicians, magicians and entertainers! Crisis is one of the biggest homeless charities and over Christmas will need up to 8,000 volunteers nationwide
❅ Keep it local. There are lots of organisations that need help within your community. Charities such as Age Concern or the Alzheimer’s Society often require befrienders in their local centres, you can coordinate carol singing for Christian Aid, and the Salvation Army is very active at this time of year. For opportunities in your area, visit www.do-it.org
Get loads more ideas to inspire you this Christmas at volunteering.org.uk and timebank.org.uk/christmas-volunteering
❅ Manning a helpline. Helplines such as Samaritans and
ChildLine can be a real lifeline at Christmas but they require volunteers to keep them running. Most involve a training programme before you start so get in contact as early as possible
❅ Selling Christmas merchandise. Cards and gifts are
great sources of income for charities but they usually need extra help selling them. Volunteer at your local charity shop or offer to sell to friends and family. Alternatively, contact Card Aid, a charity that produces Christmas cards for about 300 different charities. Throughout the UK there are around 30 Card Aid shops needing help over the festive period
Websites for Volunteering
and offer to help with Christmas collections. You only need spare a few hours and there are no necessary skills to take part – just enthusiasm!
❅ Help a lonely neighbour. There are many charities across the country working towards a community where neighbours look out for each other. They need your help this Christmas – invite a lonely neighbour for lunch, help with transporting them to local services or do a few jobs around their house to make their lives easier

“The first Christmas after my mother died, I couldn’t bear the idea of a big family Christmas at home without her,” says Annie, “so my husband booked us into the Grand Hotel in Brighton. The distraction of the Grand’s celebrations, the sea air and being somewhere without memories turned what could have been sad into an occasion we still remember for all the right reasons.”
❅ Seek the sun or snow. If you’re after true escapism try
diving in Egypt, skiing in the Rockies, partying in Moscow, soaking in the hot springs in Iceland or shopping in the spectacular markets of Cologne or Vienna. Be truly alternative and climb Mount Kilimanjaro, go horse-riding in Arizona or practise yoga in Goa

from it all while helping others. Companies such as www.statravel.co.uk, www.travelmatters.co.uk and www.handsupholidays.com offer holidays where you can do your bit, whether it’s painting houses in a favela in Rio de Janeiro or cleaning up a village in Borneo
❅ Go wild in a theme park. From Alton Towers to Thorpe
Park, theme parks across the country offer exciting Christmas packages. Or for a more back-to-nature with many new activities to try, try Centerparcs
❅ Hole up in a hotel. Forget tinsel and badly-decorated
Christmas trees, many hotels from the Ritz in London to Thornbury Castle near Bristol offer festive breaks with a touch of glamour, with everything from champagne receptions to treasure hunts

a trip back in time wandering its Roman city walls, or taking a ride on the 33m high wheel in Edinburgh can fill the holiday period with history and excitement
❅ Take a day trip. Why not spend Christmas Day at a

Christmas Editor’s favourites
We’ve sifted through masses of press releases and here it is: our own selection of toys and gifts for Christmas 2012. This year we’ve chosen toys we’d buy ourselves, either because they offer great play value, develop creativity or physical play or because they are made of reusable material. With a recession on, choosing toys that will last long enough to be handed down is a wise move too. Most toys can be ordered from your local toyshops, who always provide great advice too if you
