Charity Plans Malvern Hills Walk
Summer holidays are here again!
A fundraising sponsored walk along the length of the Malvern Hills is being planned by local charity Malvern Special Families.
You will no doubt be looking for great ideas to entertain your youngsters during the long school break. We have some ideas featured in this issue. Many local attractions are gearing up to entertain the kids this summer and you can find out what’s happening in our news and feature pages. There are events, clubs and activities across our lovely region listed in our What’s On Section. So read on and plan some lovely days out with your family. Also look out for the launch of the fantastic new Families website in early July. The site will be more comprehensive than ever and easier to use: www.familiesonline.co.uk In our next issue the focus will be firmly on “Back to School”. Until then, enjoy the summer!
Diane Clifford. Editor, Families Hereford & Worcester Tel: 01684 770566 Email: editor@familiesherefordandworcs.co.uk
This will be a fun and family friendly event as well as helping raise funds, say the organisers. Malvern Special Families provides safe stimulating and fun social opportunities for children and young people with disabilities. Those intending to do the full 9.5 mile walk can meet at North Hill at 10am on Sunday 14 August. But people can also decide how far they want to walk and meet the group along the way or leave the walk when they want. The organisers suggest setting up your own fundraising page linked to their Charity page at mydonate.bt.com. If you have any questions about the event or any problems with creating a sponsorship page then just get in touch with Maria Munday at manager@malvernspecialfamilies.org.uk.

Pushy Parent Risk Intrusive and ambitious parents lead children to be too self-critical and this risks depression and anxiety, according to new research. Some parents with high expectations of their children’s academic performance urge the child to achieve good grades, while others may over-react when the child makes mistakes. However, parents should not push their children too far, as this behaviour may have unintended consequences, say researchers. A five-year study on primary school children in Singapore by researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) found that children with intrusive parents had a higher tendency to be overly critical of themselves and this tendency increased over the years. Children in the study who demonstrated an increased level of self-criticalness also reported elevated depression or anxiety symptoms.
“When parents become intrusive.... it may signal to the children that what they do is never good enough,” said Assistant Professor Ryan Hong, from NUS. “Over time, such behaviour... may be detrimental to the child’s well-being as it increases the risk of the child developing symptoms of depression, anxiety and even suicide in very serious cases,” he warned.

“Instead of asking, Did you get full marks on your test?, parents can try asking, How did you do on your test?” advised Hong. He also suggested that parents should refrain from blaming the child for not performing up to expectations. Instead, parents should first praise the child for his/her achievements before turning to the mistakes. The findings were published in the Journal of Personality. Ramp up responsibilities Senior school children have to be considerably more responsible for their own belongings and themselves. Whereas primary school teachers send letters to parents, at ‘big’ school, communication on day-to-day issues might well be down to your child only. Begin building independence out and about Most secondary school pupils travel to school minus mum and dad, so get yours used to being out without you. It will be less daunting for them if this starts on the journey to primary school, rather than being thrown into travelling alone on a lesser-known route. Listen out for concerns Some children take this huge change in their stride and are ready to move on, while others will feel anxious. Common concerns include getting lost around a much larger school, dealing with the journey, making new friends and managing the homework load. Attend settling-in days Most secondaries hold a session for new joiners, usually during the summer term of year six. This is an important opportunity to get to know the buildings, potential classmates and teachers and it should make the first day less intimidating. Here are a few tips to keep in mind once your child has started secondary school… Expect them to be tired and emotional… Many year sevens get very tired thanks to the ‘newness’, on top of a longer day and a more complicated journey. Stick to early nights and restful weekends to fend off exhaustion – and the moodiness that goes with this.

Big School
Take Up The Challenge
Get super-organised with homework At primary, pupils might only have had a small amount of homework; expect the game to be raised now. Not only will there be more but keeping on top of when it all needs handing in can be complicated. Get used to knowing much less about what is going on In primary, you might well have been at the school gates most days and familiar with your child’s friends, parents and teachers. This will change: with independent travel comes a more handsoff approach. Be there for them It is tempting to think this independence means you are being made redundant come September but they’ll still need you albeit in different ways. Be there as a sounding board someone to listen and advise. And of course, they will still be calling upon the Bank of Mum and Dad and parental taxi service more than ever… Liat Hughes Joshi is a parenting journalist and the author of four books including ‘New Old-fashioned Parenting’ and ‘How to Unplug Your Child’ (both published by Summersdale) FAMILY AD_Layout 1 27/05/2016 12:49 Pageand 1 Raising Children: The Primary Years (Pearson).
This year's Big Friendly Read Summer Reading Challenge which will run across the school summer holidays, is linking up with the global year-long Roald Dahl 100 celebrations, honouring the world's No.1 storyteller. The Big Friendly Read will feature some of Roald Dahl's best-loved characters and the amazing artwork of his principal illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake. It will encourage reading on a giant scale and will feature themes such as invention, mischief and friendship as explored in Roald Dahl's books. Children can sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge at their local library as the school summer term ends and the holidays begin -- there is no charge to participate. The Big Friendly Read will encourage children to expand their own reading by exploring similar themes across the best contemporary children's writing. I just spent a few days at the beach with my dogs. There was miles of space to walk them, and they were so exhausted by the adventure and the sea air that they slept like logs while I was free to do things without them. There are plenty of dog-friendly resources on the internet to help you find the perfect holiday destination. There are hotels, bed and breakfasts, holiday homes, boating holidays, caravan and campsites where the whole family can look forward to holidays together.

This is perfectly normal and entirely his choice. So make sure he is not pestered with unwanted advances, perhaps from young dogs or pups. On the other hand he may view the entire trip as a party! You’ll need to check up on which beaches and country areas are open to dogs, and at what times of year. Forests, moors, and beaches are great places for dogs to visit - of course you must always observe the Countryside Code and be aware of livestock and wildlife.

“I had reached the pinnacle of success in 1986 at the age of 22 when I was world Olympic champion: AdrianMoorhouse number one, at 23 I broke the world record and at 24 I got gold at Seoul and I had even better years after that. I competed in two other Olympics, 1992 was my last Olympics and I retired at 28.” Adrian has commentated on Olympic swimming since 1998 and will be at Rio this year. He has high hopes for the British swimming team. “I am really happy to be commentating at Rio. A fantastic British swimmer, Adam Peaty, has recently won the European Championships. He is also a breaststroker and won the World Championships last year. So he goes into Rio in the same position I was in when I won the gold at Seoul.” We turned to discussing being a parent and how to encourage our kids in sport. “Our job is to support and create an environment where they feel cared for because it should be the coach who challenges them and pushes them and gives them feedback on their stroke, running or throwing. “You have parents who see that their child is talented but if their child doesn’t want to do it – they won’t succeed. They’ve got to want it themselves, you have to create opportunity, find out what someone is passionate about and also recognise that it might not be your passion or interest. “Equally you need to teach your children about staying power. You’ve got to help kids look at focus and commitment. Try and find out why they don’t want to do something and give them a reason to continue with it.
