Thinking of entrance or common entrance exams? Start preparing now for 11 plus, 13 plus and scholarship exams. Book early with our experienced tutors and get a head start during the quieter summer time.

At a time when the new Academy status is being floated as an option, there is much uncertainty about the future of our state schools. The benefits and drawbacks will become apparent over time, but in the meantime many parents are still opting to explore the public school system, especially at secondary or 6th form level. To gain entrance into these schools your child must take some exams, and compete against their contemporaries, many of whom will have had the head start of attending prep school. Common Entrance exams ask more of your child than year 6 SATS. A boost in writing skills, extending vocabulary, practising maths techniques, brushing up on science knowledge, current affairs, verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests can make a huge difference – particularly if you are hoping for a scholarship. We have a high success rate – in 2010 and 2011 all our students got places at the schools of their choice, with some exhibitions and scholarships achieved too. It is best to allow several months to really hone those skills, and the outlay is a good investment in your child’s future – it can even save you a considerable sum if you achieve a scholarship, which can mean a reduction in fees of up to 40% in some schools. We have tutors in Maths, Science and English, so you can be assured of thorough preparation for all subjects. Preparation for GCSE and A level English, Maths, Languages and Sciences is also available.

The much loved characters – Biff, Chip and Kipper – hit the high street to inspire the next generation of book lovers The UK’s best-selling Read At Home series will be re-launched this May as Read with Biff, Chip and Kipper – totally in line with how children learn to read today and with a fresh new look. This is perfect timing ahead of the Government’s new phonics screening check for six year olds being introduced in primary schools next year, so parents can feel 100% confident their children will be learning to read at home in a way that matches how they will be learning to read at school. The series from Oxford University Press follows the lives of the much-loved characters, Biff, Chip, Kipper and Floppy the Dog. Children will undoubtedly recognise them from the Oxford Reading Tree series, used in more than 80 per cent of UK primary schools to help almost two million children to learn to read every year. Written and beautifully illustrated by the award-winning duo, Roderick Hunt MBE and Alex Brychta, the Read with Biff, Chip and Kipper books capture the imaginations of children and parents alike, helping to foster a love of reading. Roderick Hunt MBE, author and creator of the Biff, Chip and Kipper characters, comments: “Engaging and inspiring children lies at the heart of the Read with Biff, Chip and Kipper series.” Parents who are looking for inspiration and guidance on supporting their children’s reading should also visit the brand new, user-friendly website www.oxfordowl.co.uk for free engaging activities, online eBooks and practical advice on helping their child learn to read, how to say the phonic sounds and much more. The Read with Biff, Chip and Kipper books will be widely available to purchase from 5 May 2011 (RRP £3.99).

Help Tuition caters for children from around 7 years old up to 18 and beyond, from state school, public school or home educated. We also welcome adult learners of all ages and can offer advice on the curriculum and new material to de-mystify any issues parents are unsure of in this ever-changing and challenging educational climate. We welcome enquiries from new tutors in all subjects throughout the Worcestershire and Herefordshire region. Contact Kate on 01684 562439 or email kate@helptuition.co.uk www.helptuition.co.uk

Bright ideas for Birthdays DID SOMEONE SAY party? Yes, I’m afraid so. One thing’s as sure as eggs is eggs – your child WILL have another birthday in the next year. It’s Families Hereford and Worcester to the rescue – we’ve put on our party hats to find the best suppliers around to ensure your ‘do’ is one they’ll talk about, until at least next year...

Planning your party Crowd control: entertainers Bubbles, puppets, drama, music, ‘make’ party or magician? A good entertainer will bring your party to life and keep the children enthralled while you enjoy the fun from a safe distance. While there are parents who think nothing of timetabling two hours of games, entertaining Other People’s Children is not a breeze, which is where expert help is well worth the investment. TIP: Children’s entertainers generally have vast experience and contacts which you can tap into. Ask them about local venues for hire, a realistic timetable and suitable prizes as well as the entertainment itself. Find out their preferred age group, and the maximum number of children they will cope with – too many and you’ll not get the best out of them. Write down everything you’ve agreed together so there is no doubt on the day.

Take them out: venues It might feel less imaginative than an organised bunfight at yours, but do you really have the time, energy and creativity to decorate your house as a fairy or superhero den, then clear it all up four hours later? Thought not. Happily there are plenty of places where all you have to do is pay the per-head charge and the guests will be entertained and fed, leaving you to return to your quiet, tidy house afterwards. Try child-friendly restaurants, bowling alleys, go-karting, indoor playcentres, sports clubs, the zoo, a pottery painting studio or cinema. TIP: Book well ahead. There are only so many party groups venues can accommodate at any given time – you don’t want to be scratching around at the last minute and end up having to book ‘second best’.

Themed parties A great idea when your child has a particular interest, themes can be explored in many different ways. How about a drama, musical, circus or magic party, a sports party; or get crafty making bags, jewellery or cookies, or print t-shirts to match the theme. TIP: Take the theme throughout the party – print off related pictures from the web as wall decorations, ask the guests to dress up with a prize for the best home-made hat. 8

Top tips ■ It’s all in the timing: For little children, 11am-1pm or 12-2pm are best. Most of them have been up since six and they’re past their best by the afternoon. For older children a lunchtime slot or mid afternoon start will work ■ Liaise with parents whose children have birthdays around the same time. If you both book the same day for a party, the guest list will be tricky. Joining forces is a much better idea – you can share the costs and the hassle ■ Keep the food simple and don’t over cater. Most children are too excited to have a big appetite. Limit the junk food and remember some children maybe vegetarian or have a food intolerance ■ Sleepovers: come midnight, you’ll be regretting it... Planning ahead is KEY. Read our ‘been there, done that’ parent’s guide: go to www.familiesonline.co.uk and type ‘successful sleepovers’ into the search box.

Mum’s the Word! Pictured here with Chris and Pui from CBeebies at the Palace Theatre in Redditch which is very handy as I am now 8 months pregnant with our second son! Great – more diggers and ride-ons (try Lawn Farm Toys in Welland for a great selection of outdoor toys from a local business!)

Sussanah Bramley is married to Robin, lives in Ryall, near Upton upon Severn and is Mum to Charlie aged 3. We moved to Worcestershire just before Christmas 2009 when the snow arrived! Having uprooted our then 2½ year old from a lovely circle of friends, groups and music classes where we were previously living in West London, I was determined to make a prompt start on integrating him into toddler society. It is all very well having a fun time making boats out of removal boxes, ripping up polystyrene packaging into “snow” and running round Homebase flushing the display loos but there’s only so much of that we can all take!

Our first stop was Teddy Bears Club in Upton. I remember walking in on that freezing cold day and being amazed by the wonderful reception. In London I feel you’re barely noticed as a newcomer to a busy local playgroup and this was a totally unexpected experience. Not only had we stumbled upon a small community gathering but it was their Christmas party! We were made so incredibly welcome; they offered us party food, Charlie zoomed gleefully towards the play area and Santa even had a present for him at the end! Our luck continued as we discovered the likes of disciplined activities such as Jo Jingles, Tumbletots and Rugby Tykes, plus another little playgroup in Upton at the Hill Centre. We found great family fun to be had at Clive’s Fruit Farm, Croome Park, Worcester Woods (I love the Orchard Cafe), Evesham Vale Light Railway (superfriendly team of people), Little Acorns Soft Play aka Worcester Indoor Play... More friends were made and in no time at all we had established a weekly routine, Charlie had friends to play with and I had mums to natter to! Six months later, when we felt Charlie was more settled, we started him at preschool one morning a week. We’re lucky here in the Upton area as there are so many good ones to choose from. He attends Welland Pre-school and Castlemorton Caterpillars. By this Easter he’ll be attending 3 sessions

Having put aside any focus on myself since we moved here, other than of course meeting some nice new mums, I decided to treat myself to a few pregnancy massages. I’d had regular reflexology treatments throughout my pregnancy with Charlie and also swam and attended Aquafit and yoga classes. Oh what luxury that seems right now. It’s certainly different the second time round! I tried a couple of spas. The therapists were lovely and both were friendly and professional, but lacking, I felt, an in-depth knowledge of pregnancy. My friend Karen, the editor of this magazine, put me in touch with Melanie at Rushwick Therapies. Unlike the other therapists, she specialises in areas such as pregnancy and, having had children herself, really understood what I was feeling in terms of discomfort – both emotional and physical. The first important difference I noticed at Rushwick Therapies was the fact that Melanie actually went through and discussed my medical (specifically pregnancy) history. Secondly, she asked what focus I would like for the session. My ribs are particularly painful so she gave them a great work out! For my treatment she used a comfortable futon (she changes couches according to the needs of each client). Having previously experienced uncomfortable massages on hard couches or being obliged to sit upright / bent over a solid couch with nowhere to put my knees, apart from splayed outwards – not good when you have SPD (pelvic pain) – this was heaven! There is no doubt that you get your money’s worth with Melanie. This is all due to the personal treatment. She gets very involved in your particular case and it’s clear you’re not just on a production line – treatments are very, very individual. I’m looking forward to my next massage! Just before this article went to print Sussanah gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Congratulations and lots of love x.

Focus on Popular Local Class Amy Marshall ALM Fitness

How did you get started? I’ve always been passionate about sport and have been part of a team from a very young age. I carried this passion on into my studies and gained a degree in Sports and Exercise Science at Worcester University. I then gained my Personal Trainer qualification and Exercise to Music qualification and, after speaking to a few people in my local area, found that they were interested in me starting up aerobics classes and that there was a need. I got the ball rolling (so to speak) and set up my own business to see how it would go. I enjoy motivating people and seeing people get the results they want. What’s more I find it extremely satisfying to see people who may not have exercised before, actually start to exercise and enjoy it!

What does the future hold for the business? Tell us a bit about yourself I’m Amy, I’m 27 years old, Worcestershire born and bred and the owner of ALM Fitness. I have a degree in Sports and Exercise Science, am a fully qualified personal trainer and exercise to music instructor and also a football coach. I’m extremely passionate about sports and exercise and have been ever since I was very young.

What is ALM Fitness? ALM Fitness is my own brand new business which I launched in September 2010. I have found it to be a massive learning experience but, in such a short space of time, a very fast growing business. With so many strings to my bow, I have a lot to offer everyone!

It’s all still very new and I have loads of ideas and inspirations. Ideally I would like to start a few more classes in the local area and continue to build my business, offering new fitness opportunities should they arise.

Get more exposure for your Clubs and Classes by advertising in Families Hereford & Worcester magazine! Please call Karen on 0844 504 7224 for more information.

I’m a very sociable person so I enjoy meeting new people and getting to know them. The most positive thing I enjoy about my work is setting targets with clients, motivating them and seeing them get the results they’ve always wanted. To see the excitement in clients when they’ve achieved results and pushed themselves is so satisfying and makes my job worthwhile.

Any bad bits?

Personal Training – one to one personal training sessions or group personal training in and around your home to help you achieve the results you want.

My passion is my job and I love what I do, so there are no bad bits! It’s my business, my career, my life, so I will always strive to be the best!

Aerobics classes – A full body workout consisting of fat burning aerobics and mat based toning.

How do you fit work around your personal life?

Boot Camp – Don’t be put off by the name as it’s not as scary as it sounds. You work at your own pace to get the results YOU want! Non-military fitness programs for men and women of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels with brilliant fitness instructors who will get the very best out of you. Included with this I offer FREE nutritional advice.

May – June 2011

Alternatively, Amy is always willing to talk. You can contact her any time on 07740 366419 or email info@almfitness.co.uk

What is the best bit about what you do?

Alongside this I also run fitness classes through KO Sports for new mums called ‘Mums on the Run’ which is a chance for mums to get fit and socialize with their baby! For more information on class timetables please see www.almfitness.co.uk

If you’d like more information on classes and what Amy offers then visit her website www.almfitness.co.uk.

Unfortunately the main thing about running your own business is that your business comes first. Luckily, I have a good network of friends and the support I’ve had since starting has been amazing. I still manage to find a good balance of work and socializing.

What advice would you give other people looking to work for themselves? Be prepared to work hard! At the end of the day, it’s your business, so if you want to be successful then you’ll only be as successful as the amount of effort you’ve put in. www.familiesherefordandworcs.co.uk
