NEWS & INFO Groups sought for charity challenges Every day in Bedfordshire 8 people hear the devastating news they have cancer, more money is needed to ensure that Macmillan (www.macmillan.org.uk) is able to support people affected by cancer. For this reason, Macmillan is looking to local groups, clubs, organisations and associations to help in any way they can. Fundraising Manager Jessica Wilson is well aware of the importance of local generosity. “We’ve seen some amazing events and fundraising ideas playing out throughout the year so far, and we can’t thank everyone enough for their support,” she acknowledges. “Yet there’s always an inherent challenge in keeping the wheels turning and ensuring we’ve got the right funds to allocate to the right places. Donations are literally what keep us going, and we want to continue giving our renowned support to cancer patients across the county.

Turner at The Higgins Bedford For the first time this autumn all nine of the watercolours by J.M.W Turner held by the Higgins art gallery in Bedford (www.thehigginsbedford.org.uk/) will be on display, including The Great Falls of the Reichenbach (pictured). The exhibition spans Turner’s career, showing the development of his unique, unparalleled work, from Cote House near Bristol, painted when he was aged just 16 and already a skilled draughtsman and watercolourist, to The Town and Lake of Thun, painted during the final phase of his career, when he produced some of his most innovative works. Alongside his works, there is an exhibition drawn from the internationally renowned watercolour collection held at The Higgins Bedford, including some of the great names from this enduring medium. Entry to the exhibition is free and it runs until Sunday 10 April 2016.

Young entrepreneurs enter Dragons’ Den Sisters Kia and Sky Ballantyne, aged 14 and 12 recently became the youngest entrepreneurs to pitch to the formidable Dragons’ Den panel. Their clever product, a harness for children who are learning to ride their bike, started as school homework, and has now grown into a business. NCT and ukactive announce new partnership for post-natal mums in Bedford
NCT (“National Childbirth Trust”) staff, volunteers and local mums have joined forces with ukactive to address concerns that new mums may have about becoming active. Mums taking part in the programme will be offered 12 weeks of specialised postnatal support from a community exercise professional comprising of one-to-one appointments and weekly group get-togethers. This free service is open to both NCT members and non-members and their babies alike. It launched in October at the NCT’s North Bedfordshire Bumps and Babies Group which is held every Friday from 10.30am in St. John’s Church Hall, St. John’s Street, Bedford. Charlotte Eavis Wix of Toad Hall Nurseries was awarded 'Regional Nursery Manager' at the Nursery World Awards in September this year. She joined the company in 2006 and is the Regional Operations Manager for seven nurseries including the Colmworth site. Charlotte also supports the whole group recently overseeing the Soil Associaton silver accreditation and Children's Food Trust Menu Award. She has also improved occupancy levels throughout her area as well as implementing new initiatives across the group. Local teacher wins National Teaching silver Award Earlier this year, Anne Lasbrey (pictured) of Hawthorn Park Community Primary School in Houghton Regis was recognised for her exceptional contribution to the teaching profession as one of just 64 Silver Teaching Award winners in the UK as Teacher of the Year in a primary school. She narrowly missed out on the National Pearson (Gold Plato) Award, last month.. The Pearson Teaching Awards are an annual celebration of exceptional teachers and teaching. Founded in 1999 by Lord Puttnam, they recognise the life-changing impact of an inspirational teacher on the lives of the young people they teach. Rod Bristow, President of Pearson UK, said: “We are so proud to support the Teaching Awards and I’d like to offer huge congratulations to the 2015 winners. Whatever changes in education, it will always be the teacher with the ultimate power to engage and inspire. New book to help parents with children suffering from hip condition Cast Life – A Parent’s Guide to DDH has just been published and offers a vital lifeline to parents with children suffering from Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH). DDH occurs when the ball and socket of the hip joint do not fit snugly together and while it can affect around one child in every thousand, information and support is poor, often leaving parents feeling confused about what happens next. Inspired by her son who was diagnosed at four months, the author, Natalie Trice, passionately believes that there needs to be more awareness of DDH, which if left untreated, can lead to long term disability, hip replacements and life long pain. Cast Life covers everything from explanations about the condition and details of the various treatments involved, to the various products available to make life during treatment easier. It also looks at family life and dealing with emotions, as well as featuring first person stories. Natalie has also set up a charity called Spica Warrior offering information about DDH and 10% of the book's royalties, which is available from Amazon, will be going to this cause.

Baby, it's cold outside... Trampolining Kids love bouncing, enroll them in a trampolining class. Some centres will teach very young children, using large crash mats for safety. Small kids will not get much beyond bouncing on their bottoms but will gradually learn other techniques. Next stop, the Olympics. By Sally J. Hall
Climbing
We’ve all been there; an afternoon when you’ve planned on visiting the park so the kids can let off some steam on the swings, followed by a good run about in the fresh air, is cancelled due to a downpour. Cue over active kids cooped up at home, driving themselves – and you – slowly around the bend.
Climbing walls are popular now and even small children can tackle lower ‘cliffs’ with good supervision. Check that your chosen venue has plenty of staff and safety equipment. It builds teamwork, self-confidence, motivation, trust and fitness. Classes for smaller children involve games; as they progress they can take part in the National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme (NICAS).
Help is at hand with the wonders of indoor sports, leisure and play centres. There’s sure to be plenty of affordable activities available nearby, perhaps a soft play centre or a racquet club. Soft Play An indoor soft play centre is great when it’s bucketing down outside. There may be areas suited to toddlers; bear in mind this needs quite a lot of hands-on help from you. Once they are older they can negotiate padded rollers, slides and crawl nets alone. They can turn it into a pirate’s ship, a castle or a dungeon in their imaginations, let off energy and be sure to sleep well. Take a friend’s kids and then let them return the favour another day.
Racquet Sports If you’re a racquet family, visit a badminton or squash club that teaches children from the basics through to championships. These are sports the whole family can enjoy together. All babies to be protected against meningitis A new vaccine to protect babies against meningitis B has been introduced for all childhood vaccinations for babies aged two, four and 24 months. Since September 2015, all babies will routinely be given the meningitis vaccine at their regular vaccination appointments. The scheme was delayed by cost disputes but is now the first national, publicly funded programme against this deadly infection in the world. It should protect babies and children against 90% of meningococcal group B bacteria. This can affect babies under the age of one and can be caught up to around the age of five years. If left untreated, it can cause damage to the brain and cause blood poisoning. It can also kill. From this autumn, smoking in a car when there are children in it has been banned. The new law has come into force in England and Wales where drivers could face a fine of £50. Anti-smoking groups have welcomed the law, pointing out the potential harm passive smoking can cause to children. However, spokespeople for the police have said that they will advise parents not to smoke rather than enforcing fines.
Twin your toilet! It's World Toilet Day on Thursday 19 November. It's hard to believe that 2.5 billion people around the world don’t have somewhere safe to go to one, and that many children won’t make it to their 5th birthday because of related diseases. Helping to raise awareness of the issue are www. ToiletTwinning.org/ who run a toilet twinning service to help fund sanitary provision in a number of countries, including Cambodia and Uganda, amongst others. Supporting them is the Nude Tin Can Gallery (www. nudetincan.gallery) which is holding an open submission exhibition for artists “Don’t Forget to Flush” exploring some of the issues around World Toilet Day (enter by 15 November), and a kid's art competition (enter by Friday 13 November). How to cope with winter woes By Sally J. Hall
There are over 200 separate cold viruses around, so it’s no wonder that our children seem to come down with a cold almost every five minutes. And with the weather being gloomy and the days getting dark so early, we all tend to feel a little more run down than usual. We still don’t know exactly what causes the “Common Cold” but we are all familiar with the symptoms. A runny nose, sore throat, a temperature and a general feeling of poor health are only too familiar. So when do you let nature run its course, and when do you call the doctor? For very small children and babies, the worst effect may be a blocked nose that stops them being able to breath properly. This can interfere with breastfeeding, as it’s difficult to feed with a blocked nose. Clear blocked nostrils gently with a soft cloth soaked in sterile saline solution or if really blocked, a nasal aspirator. You can try to help relieve the symptoms by using a decongestant rub on your child’s chest at night or by using a few drops of a decongestant spray or eucalyptus oil on a tissue; leave it near (though not in reach) of your baby as they sleep. You could also use a vaporiser or humidifier in your child’s bedroom to help with breathing.

Sleep may be affected, especially if your child has a cough, so try to encourage naps during the day– and you may need one yourself if your little one has kept you up half the night! If your little one has a slight fever, this can be dealt with using an infant paracetamol or ibuprofen solution but make sure you read the instructions and use the right amount for your child’s age. Never use a cough and cold remedy with children under six years old. Make sure that your child continues to get plenty of fluids, even if they are off their food. So keep breastfeeding. For older children, water should be offered frequently but try to avoid lots of sugary drinks and cordials, as you’ll have tooth decay to cope with later on! If your child is under three months old, it’s always worth checking the symptoms with your doctor, as very small children can become very ill very quickly. If your child is floppy and unresponsive or very fussy, call the doctor or go straight to the hospital. If you’re worried that it’s not ‘just’ a cold but something more serious, do seek medical advice. Flu is a worry during the winter months and can be serious in young children. Croup, a viral illness that causes a bark-like cough can be swiftly treated with steroids, and whooping cough, a bacterial infection, needs antibiotics (remember that your child must take the full course to avoid becoming antibiotic resistant). If you are concerned that your child may have meningitis, you must go to the hospital at once. Symptoms include a headache, sensitivity to light, a rash, seizures and listlessness but some indicators may be mistaken for a cold or flu. If in doubt, get to A&E – the staff will be only too happy to be able to set your mind at rest.

Education Secretary calls for schools to provide childcare Education Secretary Nicky Morgan has said that schools should take “reasonable steps” to provide childcare for the whole length of the working day during term time and the school holidays too. As part of this move, parents are to be given the right to request that their children’s schools put this care structure into place. However, the funding for this has not been agreed. Head teachers have said that this idea would have to be looked at “extremely carefully to ensure it is not just a popular gimmick.” Russell Hobby, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, has responded to say that while giving care for children while parents are working is a good idea, there are several reasons to be wary of the Government’s promise. Budget cuts and recruitment issues are just two of the reasons why schools might not be able to provide care from early in the day until after parents finish work.

Stop turning a blind eye Bedford Borough schools have taken part in the first child-led campaign launched to tackle avoidable blindness in the UK. The Eye Heroes (www.eyeheroes.org.uk) project has been launched by a team of experts in the field of ophthalmology and human centred design, supported by Moorfields Eye Charity. Eye Heroes plan to work with schools, healthcare professionals and local authorities to engage children through volunteer-run workshops in schools and after-school clubs, equipping them with the information and understanding required to spread the word to adults within their family and wider communities. Make With Kids: Christmas Cookie Tree Decorations These delicious shortbread stars will look great on the tree – but we suspect they won’t be there long! This is such a simple recipe, with only three ingredients and it is quick and easy to make. Shortbread is always a favourite! Time needed: About half an hour, including baking time Ingredients Plain flour, 200g Cool butter, 100g Caster sugar, 50g Writing icing, white, green, red (great for drawing lines and shapes) Decorations in silver, red, green, gold or white You will need: Large bowl Sieve Flat baking trays Star cookie cutters (or other festive shapes) Clean pencil Silver, gold, white, green or red ribbon
Method: With your child, measure the flour and then let your little one spoon the flour into the sieve, held above the bowl. Sift the flour. Add the sugar Add the butter, cut into cubes. With clean hands, show your child how to rub the butter into the flour. Keep rubbing then kneading and it should come together into a ball. Without over-working the dough, roll it out on a flat surface, dusted with flour. Using the cookie cutters, help your child stamp out star shapes and place them on the baking tray. Use the blunt end of the clean pencil to make a hole at the top of one of the points for the ribbon. Bake at 320F/160C/Gas 6 for 12-15 minutes until golden. When cool, decorate with writing icing and any other decorations you like, such as sugar balls. Hang on the tree!
