Welcome

Seasons greetings! It’s a magical time of year, for sure, but wowzers there’s an awful lot of parental planning and preparation involved.

To that end, we hope this issue proves useful in helping you to research some fun festive things to do with family and friends. We have an absolute bumper What’s On, with all you need to know about where to see Santa, pantomimes, seasonal theatre, free activities and much more. However much you plan though, there’s always a danger of a curveball, especially when children are involved.

Last Christmas Eve, my middle child suddenly had a burning desire to ‘bake cookies for Santa’. This was something I had definitely not scheduled into the day, and, I suspected, my penance for letting him watch too much American TV throughout the year. But his little face looked crestfallen when I said we didn’t have time. The Magic of Christmas hung in the balance, so we turned it around and rustled up some gingerbread.

Not planned, not expensive and not complicated, it made them so happy. It was a reminder to me that the simplest things often make the most special memories. So take it easy and don’t put too much pressure on yourself!

Wishing you and your families a wonderful Christmas and a very happy New Year.

Welcome to Kids Planet

Two West Yorkshire nursery groups have been incorporated into Kids Planet.

Nine former Kinder Haven nurseries in Leeds and Bradford, and six Twinkles nurseries in North and West Yorkshire, have now become part of the Kids Planet Group, which runs more than 130 nurseries across the UK.

Kids Planet provides neutral spaces, open-ended resources, and an emphasis on nature and the environment. Their ethos puts children’s interests at the heart of everything.

The newly-acquired settings have been refurbished in line with this approach.

Kids Planet says enabling environments are crucial, providing children with the space and resources to play, learn, and explore. Calm environments and neutral spaces with loose parts and magical items capture the children’s imagination and curiosity.

Help local firm fundraising for Zarach

Emsleys Solicitors and Estate Agents is supporting Leeds children’s charity Zarach this year, raising money and awareness through a range of activities.

Zarach helps children by providing beds and other essentials.

Many children go to school tired, hungry and cold without a proper bed of their own. Poverty has a significant effect on a child’s education. Colleagues at Emsleys wanted to make a material difference and help.

The firm is collecting items for bed bundles – you can drop new items for donation to Emsleys’ offices in Colton, Rothwell, Crossgates, Garforth and Sherburn in Elmet.

Bed bundle items needed are:

• Single duvets

• Pillows

• Single duvet covers

• Single fitted sheets

• Pyjamas - Age 5-16

• Children’s toothpaste

• Adult toothbrushes

• Children’s shampoo

• Period products

• Hot water bottles

If you have an Amazon account, you can also donate via the charity’s Amazon wishlist, which you can find the link to on their website.

Marketing manager Laura Watson recently completed a 10k to raise funds for Zarach and there are lots more events and activities planned in the run up to Christmas and into the New Year.

“By providing something to eat and a good night’s sleep, we hope to give every child an equal chance to learn and succeed at school,” said Laura.

For more information on how to donate or get involved, contact marketing@emsleys.co.uk or call 0113 264 4414. For more information on Zarach go to www.zarach.org

Boys’ body dissatisfaction

It’s known that girls can show an awareness of dieting by the time they start primary school. Meanwhile, many boys feel they should be bigger, more muscular, more ‘manly.’ While this is a sign of body dissatisfaction, it tends to fly under the radar or go unnoticed by adults because it’s disguised as ‘getting healthy.’

Body dissatisfaction is not a superficial concern as it impacts health behaviours, social interactions and mental health in general.

Research indicates that boys and girls are almost equally likely to experience body dissatisfaction. Where girls might focus on weight loss diets, boys are apt to over-exercise, cut sugar or carbs (or both) from their diets and become consumed with their health.

Most parents aren’t likely to be concerned if their son decides to skip dessert or spend time lifting weights. If this shift in habits also coincides with puberty, it can be difficult to tell if a boy is getting leaner, broad-shouldered or just taller.

In other words, the typical parent may not be able to tell if there is a problem brewing or just normal teen development taking place. Still, this change in habits should be a red flag to keep an eye out for body dissatisfaction or even the emergence of disordered eating.

How do you know when your son has a problem or is just genuinely becoming more responsible for his health?

Boys should be gaining weight through puberty, not losing weight. If you notice your son losing weight, an appointment with a family doctor is in order.

It’s also important that health consciousness doesn’t interfere with enjoyment of food. If your son is rigid in his eating habits and won’t have a treat at a birthday party or refuses to participate in social activities that involve food, it’s likely there’s a problem. Further, supplement use (eg protein powder) is often indicative of real body image concerns.

Body dissatisfaction and disordered eating can become chronic and dangerous, interfering with health and development.

Treatment is more effective when problems are caught early. When in doubt, it’s best to seek guidance from a professional with relevant expertise, such as a registered dietitian or therapist.

Charlotte Markey PhD is a professor of psychology and chair of the health sciences department at Rutgers University, USA. Her latest book, Being You: The Body Image Book for Boys, is published by Cambridge University Press.

A balanced diet

It’s a popular misconception that boys and men need significantly more protein than girls and women. Furthermore, many people (um, boys) believe that they are protein deficient and that extra protein will help them to build muscle.

Nearly everyone gets plenty of protein, however, and any additional protein consumed can’t be used by the body; it will simply pass through. Some research suggests that men often eat too much protein and not enough fruit and vegetables. A balanced diet is a better and safer source of nutrition, given that regulation of supplements is spotty to non-existent.

If your son asks you to buy protein foods or make more proteinrich meals, explain how it’s important to eat a variety of foods and that the diet and supplement industry profit from our insecurities. If his goal is growth, health or even muscle, a varied diet is more important than protein.

With knowledge of what constitutes a healthy diet and body, boys will be better able to make informed decisions and act on them accordingly.

Triggered by teasing?

It isn’t just a stereotype that boys are less communicative than girls; this is supported by data. Boys are less likely to discuss their concerns, or even the boring minutia of their days with their parents.

Pat yourself on the back if your son comes to talk with youyou’ve already done something right when he feels able to share his thoughts.

If your son reveals that he has been teased about his weight or appearance, your instinct can be to immediately say: ‘You’re handsome/perfect.’ Try to resist doing this as it can unintentionally invalidate his concerns. Further, he will know that, as his parents, you are biased in your appraisal of him.

Instead, try to ask questions and prompt a discussion. ‘Who said that?’ and ‘Why do you think they said that?’ and ‘Do you agree with them?’ are good questions to start with. You want to listen and also make it clear that you love and value him overall for who he IS not for how he looks.

How language difficulties impact sibling communication

Winter is such a lovely time for indoor play. Families can get together over a deck of cards, blow the cobwebs off boards games and huddle together, fortifying bonds of togetherness and connection. The shorter days lend themselves to cosy nights indoors and are a fantastic time for siblings to enjoy quality time together.

But what happens when siblings can’t, or won’t, play together?

One of the most common barriers preventing sibling play is language difficulty. One of the children in question may have delayed speech or there could be a more significant cognitive impairment such as a diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder. From a child’s perspective, having their attempts to play with a sibling refused can be hurtful and distressing. For their sibling, being unable to play for any reason can be a source of confusion, even trauma, because they don’t understand what is needed of them or perhaps even why the other child is so upset.

Using various tools and tips, it is possible to foster emotionally grounded play between siblings.

Communicating with an infant

Communication starts long before formal talking begins. When our children are babies, they will often look at us and return our smiles, which is the very start of what we call ‘receptive language skills.’ We point to objects and the growing infant points too, understanding that we are communicating about the same thing. It could be a plane in the sky or a duck or even another member of the family. This process is known as ‘joint attention,’ which a child uses to develop the ability to understand language and respond appropriately when asked questions.

For example, they may be asked what they want to eat and be shown a choice of toast or cake. They may not know the right word but they can certainly point to the food they want the most (probably cake!). This shows the infant can understand and decide.

If this development is delayed for any reason, it can become an obstacle to playing with a sibling. However, you can help this by modelling non-verbal play at different levels. For example, Hide and Seek can start with something much simpler, such as

Lego play therapy

peek-a-boo. Throw and catch can start with rolling and trapping a ball when sitting on the floor.

Snap card games can be played with fewer cards and in shorter bursts.

These modified activities nurture joint attention and receptive language skills. It is about scaling back ambitious play and getting co-operation.

The importance of feeling safe

When the more verbal child demands that the non-verbal child play with them, it can make the non-verbal child feel unsafe. They do not necessarily understand what is expected of them and they will often disengage.

Parents can help by modelling a softer, gentler tone for their more verbal child to use when they want to play with their sibling. The human voice plays an important role in creating safety, as shown by Dr Stephen Porges, who spent over forty years researching it before inventing the Safe & Sound Protocol (https://bit.ly/safeandsoundpro), a fantastic pre-language tool often used by parents.

Usha Patel is a neurocognitive therapist who runs Raviv Practice London (www.ravivpracticelondon.co.uk) and uses the therapeutic programme, ‘iLS focus therapy’ to help children build their receptive language skills.

Charities to help parents

I Can (www.ican.org.uk) gives parents/carers and practitioners the information they need to help children develop their speaking and understanding skills.

Afasic (www.afasic.org.uk) is a UK charity representing children and young people with speech, language and communication disabilities, working for their inclusion in society.

Children who find social interaction challenging and do not want to be in the same space as their siblings can benefit from Lego Play therapy.

Lego Play therapy nurtures co-operation using job roles: the builder, the engineer and the supplier. Children are allocated one of these roles and must work together to build something specific. This simple concept can greatly help social interaction, teach how to take turns and be done in relative silence if noise is difficult for a non-verbal child to handle.

Words for life (www.wordsforlife.org.uk) offers activities and support for parents, children and young people to improve language, literacy and communication skills from home.

The Royal College of Speech and Language (www.rcslt.org) helps parents locate accredited speech and language therapists.

Families Interview: Iona Rangeley

Here at Families, books

of

of Einstein

What first inspired you to be a writer? Is there a book/ character that you wish you’d written?

It sounds a bit clichéd, but I have honestly wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember. I have lots of family members who love writing, particularly my parents, so I think as a child it just seemed as obvious a thing to do with your time as watching TV or walking the dog, and luckily, I never grew out of it.

There are so many brilliant children’s books out there and there are a great deal I wish I could have written. I think Lauren Child’s Clarice Bean is a great character: I still remember the impact her books had on me when I read them at school and suddenly felt like the fact I stared out of the window all the time made me the coolest person ever.

You wrote your first book whilst studying for your English degree. That’s pretty impressive. Did the idea come to you fully formed or did you just know you wanted to write children’s books?

Not many people know this, but the first children’s book I wrote at university actually wasn’t Einstein the Penguin.

I started writing a series of very surreal poems about a little girl going on adventures with her teddy bear, which I only shared with my friends, then eventually combined into a book and sent to my now agent. But it wasn’t quite ready, so I came up with Einstein the Penguin in my third year. It definitely wasn’t fully formed yet: the original plot is quite different from the plot as it ended up.

Having a main character that doesn’t speak, lends itself perfectly to the idea of a detective mystery, but I’m sure it’s not without its own challenges. How do you get around that?

I think all the challenges it creates can just as easily be turned into advantages.

For example, it’s fun coming up with new ways for a character to communicate, and I think it adds to the drama. And of course, most of the story is seen through Imogen and Arthur’s eyes, so their voices can help clarify things where it’s needed.

The first Einstein book is the perfect cosy winter read. How are you planning to spend your Christmas this year?

My Christmas plans this year are the very opposite of cosy winter reads: I’m actually going to be with my family in New Zealand. I’ve never been abroad at Christmas before: normally I would be in our freezing house in Norfolk wearing very

with

warm socks, but this year I’m giving a warm Christmas a go!

Einstein the Penguin – The Case of the Fishy Detective is available now in hardback priced £12.99.
