How animal assisted therapy has transformed my son’s life! Kids Critters was recommended to Katrina, a local mother of two neurodivergent boys. ‘Since coming to Tiffany and the critters, my eldest has blossomed. He can communicate much clearer and his confidence and self-esteem have rocketed. My 11-year-old son is very introvert and struggles to communicate, but since starting critters he has come out of his shell and is able to have longer conversations, which is wonderful! My sons used to fight and argue which was difficult to cope with. Tiffany has got the boys to work together as a team and their relationship has improved hugely. Thank goodness we came across Tiffany and critters, it’s been a whole game changer.’ For more information on animal assisted therapy, contact Tiffany, founder of Kids Critters at tiffany@kidscritters.co.uk, or visit www.kidscritters.co.uk
Rock Project Croydon star shines bright at Yuletide Magic in Coulsdon Once held hostage by her shyness, Lottie has been set free since taking guitar and vocal classes with the Rock Project Croydon. This Yuletide Magic in Coulsdon, Lottie shared the stage with another rising star. Together, their voices soared, harmonizing in perfect synergy, a duet born from the shared spirit of the Rock Project. Lottie’s story isn’t just about personal triumph. It’s a testament to the transformative power of music and the supportive community fostered by the Rock Project. Her story is proof that even the quietest melodies can become the loudest anthems, reminding us of all that within every shy heart, a rockstar waits to be unleashed. Get involved in Children’s Mental Health Week From 5 to 11 February, families across the UK are encouraged to take part in Children’s Mental Health Week organised by charity Place2Be. This year’s theme is My Voice Matters. My Voice Matters is about encouraging young people to use their voices, share what matters to them and encourage those around them to hear their voices. Evidence shows that empowering children and young people can have a positive impact on their health and wellbeing. For example, children and young people who feel that their voices are heard - and that what they say makes a difference - have higher levels of selfefficacy and self-esteem. Introducing the Waterproofs and Wellies project The Outdoor Guide Foundation has the simple aim of making the outdoors accessible to all - and that starts with children. Nearly one third of primary school children in the UK come from families that are living below the poverty line. This means there is little money for household essentials, let alone for buying suitable clothing for outdoor play. That’s where The Waterproof and Wellies Project comes in. Over the next five years, it aims to donate at least ten waterproof suits and wellies to every state primary school in the country - all twenty thousand of them. Why? Because time outside is vital and there’s a startling statistic that suggests prisoners get more time outside in an average week than a child of primary school age. Waterproof and Wellies has already donated kits to more than three hundred schools. With the support of local families and business, the project can do much more. To find out more and support the project, visit www.theoutdoorguidefoundation.org

The school’s spellbinding week, inspired by the wizarding world of Harry Potter, focused on instilling values of kindness and empathy. From the smallest learners to the seasoned wizards of Key Stage 2, students engaged in discussions and activities promoting a culture of respect. Pupils explored ‘kind hands and kind words,’ crafting a vibrant handprint poster as a powerful visual reminder and delved into the impact of language, the importance of not judging others and ‘speaking out’ against bullying. Adding an enchanting twist, the entire school journeyed to the Harry Potter Studios, drawing inspiration from Harry’s experiences with prejudice, friendship, and relationships. EDUCATION
Meet the Head
Meet the Head Families chats with Annie Ingrassia, Head of Surrey based Warlingham Park School, a leading independent co-ed preparatory school for ages 6 months to 11, incorporating a baby room nursery, preschool, infant and junior departments. When did you start at Warlingham Park School and what did you do before that?
How does the School’s early years provision give children a flavour of life in the prep school?
I have just started my second year at Warlingham Park. Before this I was Deputy Head at Caterham Prep School. I have previously been a Choral Director and Director of Music running Music Departments in the UK and Australia.
All our pupils, however young are part of the Warlingham Park family so the babies and children in Early Years take part in all the activities that the older children do, like Forest school, specialist dance and music and even have reading buddies from Years 5 and 6 who spend time with them.
How would you describe the ethos of Warlingham Park School?
What is your best memory, so far, at Warlingham Park School?
The ethos here if one of respect and valuing every child as an individual. We truly believe that pastoral care and academic success go hand in hand. What do you particularly enjoy about working at Warlingham Park School? Everything! The pupils, parents and staff are all amazing. We all work together to make the children’s experiences here the most rewarding they can be. The school has such a wonderful family feel.
Special feature
How would the students describe you? I hope (!) they would describe me as approachable and fair and someone who always looks out for them.
I have a lot in just a year! This term, a Reception pupil proudly coming into my office to announce that they could read and teaching me the words I needed to know to read the book with them. And, who could forget our amazing production of Matilda Jr the musical in July by all our Year 5 and 5 pupils. What advice would you give to parents choosing a school? Parents know their child best so choose a school that is right for them as an individual. Visit the school, meet the Head and ask lots of questions. Choose the environment where you feel your child will thrive the most. If you weren’t Head of Warlingham Park School, what would you be? I can’t imagine doing anything else but this, but something with music and children would be a must. What is your real-life superpower? I have a photographic memory when reading and learning music.
Warlingham Park opens its doors to babies
To find out more about Warlingham Park School or to book an individual tour visit www.warlinghamparkprepschool.co.uk

Babies can explore activities and environments around the school like forest school and the music studio as well as being able to enjoy their own cosy warm space in the baby room. The baby room has its own kitchenette and a separate sleep room with bunk cots and bed pods with soft lighting and music to promote a secure sleeping environment. EARLY YEARS
What makes a good pre-school or nursery? By Justina Gapper When choosing a nursery or pre-school, most parents base their decision on a combination of personal recommendation, the vibe of the setting, how much they like the staff and the setting’s Ofsted report and rating. But what are the other features that contribute to the success of a nursery or pre-school setting? What really makes the difference between your child having a great experience, rather than just an acceptable one? Here are some things to take note of when you are visiting potential nurseries for your child.
learning at the setting. For instance, use of Home-Link Books which suggest small, achievable, fun activities that parents can do with their children at home. Structure, routine and safety
Staff team Recruiting the right staff and ensuring they work closely as a team is crucial to the success of a nursery setting. Look out for the way staff interact with each other. Are they supporting each other, anticipating issues and problems and each other’s needs, as well as those of the children? Look out for nursery managers who are present in the main part of the nursery, as opposed to spending all their time sitting in an office. When they are working alongside their staff, they can steer the ship and also offer support at particularly busy times of the day. Communication Communication between nursery key workers and parents is a number one priority. Can you see evidence of nursery staff working closely with parents to help new children settle? Settling a child into nursery or pre-school can be a stressful and anxious experience for both parent and child. Not all children are the same, so settings should, where possible, be flexible enough to adjust their procedures to suit each child. Good nurseries provide daily feedback to parents, send weekly emails and use social media to show the nursery in action. Parents should expect to receive regular updates from their child’s key worker and be kept informed of their child’s progress and what is happening more generally at the nursery. Look out for nurseries and pre-schools that help parents understand and support at home what their children have been

To feel safe, children need routine, so it is important that staff are able to maintain this. Parents also need complete peace of mind that their child is safe at the setting and may want to check whether the nursery has installed CCTV and telecoms on its entrances to ensure secure access. Thinking ahead to school Nobody wants to rush children or parents towards school and nursery should be viewed as an experience that is important in its own right and not simply about preparing little ones for school transition. Having said this, it is useful understand what kind of process and support system a nursery has in place for transitioning children to school. For instance, does the setting provide provide transition reports for schools? These are generally, based on several areas of learning and give teachers a detailed account of the child that will be joining them. Is a child’s Reception teacher invited to visit them at the setting before they start school? It’s clearly very valuable for little ones to meet their school teacher for the first time in a relaxed and familiar environment. Primary teachers say it is social, emotional and self-care skills and a desire to learn that are important when children start school. Ask the nurseries you are visiting to explain how they go about nurturing these skills.

One in five parents in households earning less than £50,000 leaves the workforce due to childcare costs, new research from a women’s charity has found. Pregnant Then Screwed surveyed 11,811 parents with children under age 5 – and over half said childcare costs and availability were now ‘more of a concern than the cost of living’ with those at the lower end of the income scale more likely to be affected. For those households with an income of less than £50,000 in total, where parents do stay in employment, over three-quarters (76.6%) reduce their hours to make childcare feasible, the research found. Some 42% of parents surveyed also said that the cost and availability of childcare has prevented them from having any more children, while almost a third of parents (29%) said they rely on family and friends for childcare help.

Describe one of your happiest moments as a youth sports coach at London TKD I feel great pride whenever students earn their blackbelt. This represents a formidable achievement and signifies the completion of a highly transformative journey. Students leave their blackbelt gradings vastly more confident, disciplined, and respectful than when they joined London TKD. Witnessing this journey of personal growth is truly rewarding. However, one especially happy moment
How do you incorporate the principles of respect, responsibility, and integrity into your teaching?
does come to mind. Back in 2019, a particularly shy student overcame their fear of public speaking and delivered an exceptional speech on the own blackbelt journey. Mum and Dad were in tears filled with an immense sense of pride and happiness watching their son overcome his fear and deliver a heart-warming speech to large room of spectators. How do you maintain a balance between the physical and philosophical aspects of martial arts in your teaching?
We use the five tenets of TKD: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-control, and Indomitable spirit. These are foundational to everything we do and ensure our students develop the key characteristics and principles required for a fruitful adult life. Developing these characteristics is our primary objective. Our cohesive curriculum utilizes physical training, interactive games, and positive reinforcement to do so.
At London TKD, the physical aspects of martial arts are utilized as a tool to instil philosophical aspects into students. This includes discipline, confidence and respect. It’s not so much about maintaining a balance, but rather about carefully directing physical training to develop key characteristics. Can you describe a time when you had to modify your teaching style to accommodate a student’s special needs? We believe every child deserves to

Stories, rhymes and fun at your local library
There are numerous of advantages to trips to the local library in early childhood, including exposing children to endless resources, broadening their perspectives, allowing them to strengthen their social skills. It can help develop their concentration, communication skills, and encourages their imagination and creativity.
Many local libraries run Rhymetime and Storytime events for under 5’s, especially designed for the enrichment of children living in the local community.
RHYMETIME
STORYTIME
No two rhymetimes are the same, but a typical session might include rhymes and songs for everyone to join-in, including lots of action, dancing and clapping. Bags full of toys or books for children to choose from and a rhyme that links to each prop.
Library storytimes are generally aimed at two to five year olds and provide a fun and enjoyable introduction to books and libraries for young children. Storytime features stories, songs, dance, and activities to foster early literacy and teach important life skills.
Aimed at babies and toddlers aged under five, along with their parents and carers, rhymetime is great for language development as they have a lot of rhythm which catch baby’s attention and repetition, which is good for speech development and are a perfect way of introducing babies and toddlers to their local library! Rhymetimes are usually FREE and are a great opportunity for parents and children to make new friends in a relaxed setting.
Sharing books and stories with young children can help to build good language and listening skills and give them a head start when they begin school. Library storytimes can foster a lifelong love of reading and show children that it is a fun place to be. Sessions are normally FREE and generally last 30 minutes.
