Kidspace Adventures, who already own two award-winning indoor adventure parks in Croydon and Romford, have acquired Horton Children’s Farm Park, off Horton Lane in Epsom, Surrey. The popular 50-acre farm has now closed for refurbishment. It will reopen at the beginning of July 2012 under the new name of Hobbledown. The new owners will be improving all the visitor facilities at the site. These include doubling the size of the indoor play barn along with all new equipment within; creating four themed party rooms; installing a new kitchen, restaurant area and a new toilet and entrance block. There will be a whole new play village consisting of towers, aerial walkways, tunnels and a themed high ropes course; a new mining village for the children to explore and a role-play village in the courtyard. Most important of all, though, are the animals who will consider themselves very spoilt indeed with improved and upgraded enclosures all under the watchful eye of wildlife expert Matt Hartley. There will also be some new characters created to bring this wonderful park back to life. If you go to their Facebook page at Hobbledown, the team can keep you updated on all the goings on at the Farm. www.hobbledown.com or search Hobbledown on Facebook.

If you’re looking to feed your family healthily in 2012, a local veg bag delivered to your door could be just the thing. The bags come with free healthy recipe ideas and you can dip in and out as much as you like.
You can personalise them with just a single first name or add the surname too. Our four year old tester’s mum said, “I had planned to give Joel the bottle as a surprise. However never leave a box with your child’s name on it and expect them to leave it alone. “Joel was thrilled with his bottle. It has a white background and has lovely illustrations of astronauts and aliens on and Joel’s name on it. The bottle is a metal container and doesn’t have any outer insulation so is only suitable for cold liquids. It come with 2 lids. One is a drinking top which stays watertight when tipped upside down as it frequently is. It also has a twist cap if you don’t want to use the drinking top. Joel is delighted with his bottle and takes it everywhere with him. A great product. I asked Joel for a quote... I said” what’s the best thing about your bottle and why do you like it” Joel said” because it’s so beautiful”. Cute! They retail at £9.95 + p&p. See the full range of designs at

Carry on camping - host a visitor in your garden Garden-owners of London can help fill the Olympics accommodation gap with an affordable alternative – renting your garden to campers. Campinmygarden.com launched back in April 2011 is an online advertising site for private garden owners to rent their garden to travellers as a low cost short-term alternative to expensive hotels. The London 2012 Olympic games offers homeowners the opportunity to rent their garden as a micro-campsite for two weeks, providing an accessible, affordable and fun alternative to traditional accommodation that might otherwise be very costly. Campinmygarden.com allows garden owners to be open about the facilities they can provide and the pricing they offer. The rating and reviewing system also allows campers to provide a review and a rating, which can provide an insight for the next visitor.

Renting your home for the games For Londoners who live within striking distance of the Olympic park, there’s one more question you might be thinking, Can I rent my house to visitors for the games? Some London letting agents have reported a serious interest from those looking to rent their homes near to the action this summer. Reports suggest some homeowners are asking between £3,000 and £5,000 per week to rent their home. If you are thinking of renting your home, there are two options available: pay an agent who specialises in short-term lets, or do it yourself. Agents will typically charge commission of 10% to 15%. In exchange, they provide a contract and – crucially – collect the rent money. If you wish to avoid paying commission, there are a variety of websites such as rentduringthegames.com where you can list your property for a small insertion fee. Considerations for letting your family home All your cupboards, wardrobes and draws will need to be emptied and all personal possessions removed from your property. You will need to have a spotlessly clean house. There will be a cost associated with finding somewhere for your family to stay while your home is rented. You will be liable for tax on the income you generate from the rent. Your home insurance will not cover you for commercial lets so you will need to organise additional cover. Do babies have a “Social Brain”?
Research at Birkbeck baby lab aims to discover how a baby’s brain works, and at what stage infants discover that humans are social creatures By Birkbeck Babylab staff The capacity to engage and communicate in a social world is one of the defining characteristics of the human species. Adults have special areas of the brain, sometimes referred to as the “social brain”, which respond when we see different human actions, such as eye, mouth and hand movements, and interpret how sociable and communicative these movements are. Researchers are trying to discover if babies respond to such sociable dynamic movements in the same way as adults, and do they have a similarly sophisticated brain specialised for responding to such actions?

This is important because paying attention to this kind of social information is fundamental to a child’s development, enabling them to find out information about the world around them, acquire language, and fully engage in our social world.
Examples of videos used in the study
they can determine which areas of the brain are responding to different stimuli. In one of their studies, five-month-old babies were fitted with the fNIRS hat, and then shown videos of actors moving their hand, eyes or mouth. Preliminary results from this study suggest that babies are indeed able to detect subtle differences in the actions of the actors, showing responses in distinct areas of the brain that correspond with the socially specialised areas of the brain seen in adults.
Learning more about how a typical brain develops can also help them to see when and how things may go wrong during development, giving them a better understanding of many developmental disorders, such as autism. One of the greatest challenges faced by researchers when trying to answer such questions is finding ways to understand what babies are thinking, since we can’t just ask. At the Babylab at Birkbeck, University of London, they use a variety of techniques to obtain answers from babies. One such technique they have developed is known as functional Near This hat (below) contains weak near InfraRed Spectroscopy, or infrared lights. Wearing the hat is similar to “fNIRS”. This measures shining a torch onto the baby’s head, naturally occurring brain except that these lights aren’t as strong as activity by looking at the light from a torch, or as any light changes in oxygen levels in occurring naturally in our environment. the brain. When areas of our brain are more active, for example because they are responding to what we are seeing or hearing, they use up more oxygen, and the colour of the blood in our brain changes.
They think, therefore, that infants are sensitive to certain socially relevant movements from an early age, and these brain responses appear to be occurring in areas that are thought to make up the so-called “social brain” network in adults. Further research will establish whether babies are sensitive to social cues from the moment they are born, or whether this ability gradually develops over the first few months of life. If you would like your baby or toddler to be involved in studies such as this, their research team would be pleased to hear from you. They have lots of different studies going on at the Babylab, looking at various aspects of child development, and they are always in need of babies from birth to eighteen months to help them with their research. Travel costs are reimbursed.
Babies wear a soft hat, just like the one baby Astrid is wearing in the photo.
The near infrared lights in the hat change colour according to the colour of Baby Astrid wearing the fNIRS hat the blood, and this light The Babylab, Birkbeck, University of London change is then measured by sensors in the same hat, which give them a map of the naturally020 7631 6258 babylab@bbk.ac.uk occurring brain activity. Meet the Bionic Ear Children of St James the Great Nursery and Primary school, Thornton Heath, met the Bionic Ear on 1 February. On Wednesday 18 January children at Banstead Infant School were encouraged to cycle to school to celebrate the opening of a new bike shelter. Head teacher Mrs. Gill Harradine cut the ribbon on the state-ofthe-art cycle shelter before pupils gave their bikes a ‘Dr. Bike’ health check courtesy of Guy Rowland, owner of Corridori Cycle Sport in Banstead. Banstead Infant School is one of six new schools in the area to begin working with the charity Sustrans. The charity now works with 28 schools in Reigate and Banstead to encourage children to use two wheels for the school run. Sustrans Bike-It officer Gayle Amorowson commented, “16 pupils cycled to school for the celebration which was brilliant, considering very few pupils cycled before. We’re going to work hard to build on this enthusiasm and continue to encourage the kids here to get to school in a healthy and active way.” Since 2007 the number of children regularly cycling to schools where Sustrans works in Reigate and Banstead has seen a huge increase rising from just eight percent to 32 percent. Sustrans works in partnership with Reigate and Banstead Borough Council. www.sustrans.org.uk/what-we-do/bike-it/wheres-bike-it/bike-it-in-reigate-and-banstead
The show, brought to Surrey by national charity Deafness Research UK includes ‘the world’s largest ear’ to demonstrate to pupils how their ears work and what can be done to prevent hearing loss at an early age. Sponsored by BUPA and the BIG Lottery Fund, the award winning show is a fun and interactive event for all audiences. “While the revolution in MP3 and phone technology has given us all the benefit of music on the move, an unwelcome side effect is we are pumping up the volume into our ears and at a far earlier age than ever before,” said Vivienne Michael, Chief Executive of Deafness Research UK. This, she said, has led to an increase in hearing problems in later life. To invite the Bionic Ear Roadshow to your school, community group or event, contact Laura Turner at Deafness Research UK. Call Laura on 020 7164 2294 or email laura.turner@deafnessresearch.org.uk.
Children encouraged to get in the saddle During March, schools in Reigate and Banstead will once again be encouraged to get on their bikes and cycle to school as much as they can for the last three weeks of term. Sustrans is a charity that enables people to walk, cycle and use public transport for more everyday journeys. It works with over 1,400 schools across the UK to encourage children to cycle. Each year the charity organises the ‘Big Pedal’ - a competition to show children and their parents just how easy it is to use two wheels for the school run. The three-week race is inspired by the Tour de France – each day is represented by a time trial. As more children, parents and teachers cycle in to school each day, the school is awarded a faster time for each stage. Children record the journeys daily on the The Big Pedal website. The school with the lowest time overall is declared the winner.
The show is free of charge and while the schedule is subject to change, the latest information can be found on the website at: www.bionicearshow.org
Baby monitor shows video from 4 different rooms The BT Digital Video Baby Monitor 1000 not only offers sound and twoway talk, but also a video camera and a large 71mm colour screen that lets parents keep an eye on their little ones from wherever they are in the house. The monitor has a wide range of up to 300m and, at night time, automatically switches to “night vision” so there are no lights disturbing the child. A further three cameras can be connected to the unit, allowing parents to keep an eye on more than one child at the same time. It is available from www.bt.com/ mybabymonitor, Amazon.co.uk, Argos, Asda, John Lewis, Mothercare and other high street stores at £119.99. Additional cameras cost £49.99.
Last year 15 local Bike-It schools took part in Reigate and Banstead. Parents, staff and children from these schools made an incredible 15,000 journeys to school by bike over just 15 school days. This year the Big Pedal is open to all schools, not just Bike-It schools. To get involved go to

health How much for a hat? www.GBAcademies.com On 30 March 2012 people www.GBAcademies.com can wear a silly hat to work to raise awareness of Brain Tumour Research. www.GBAcademies.com The idea is to encourage nurseries, schools, colleges, universities, public sector bodies and office www.GBAcademies.com workers to make a donation in aid of the charity’s annual ‘Wear a Hat Day’. www.GBAcademies.com Sue Farrington-Smith, Director of Brain Tumour Research, comments, “Brain Tumour Research receives less than 1% of national cancer research www.GBAcademies.com spending in the UK yet the deadly disease kills more children and people under the age of 40 than any other cancer. www.GBAcademies.com Philip Treacy, celebrity hat designer and patron to the charity, comments: “Fashion is a feeling and a mood and therefore how better to express your passion and commitment to a subject such as brain tumour research than by wearing a fantastic hat? It immediately creates a statement and it doesn’t matter what the hat is or how much it costs; everybody who gets involved will feel a million dollars on the day, whilst also raising much needed research funds and awareness.” Philip has also contributed to the campaign by providing an image of a hat for a limited-edition badge. This badge, as well as this year’s wear-a-hat badges, will be available on the website during March – brain tumour awareness month. www.braintumourresearch.org/.

You don’t say... Experienced mothers won’t be surprised to hear it, but researchers were. Babies understand what their mothers are saying even though they don’t know which language she is speaking, according to a study by academics at Cardiff University. Their discovery makes clear what mums have always known – that babies pick up on the tone of a mother’s voice, and don’t have to understand precisely what is being said to realise what is being conveyed. 9

Further details and a prospectus for Cumnor House Boys, Cumnor House Girls and Treetops Nurseries can be obtained from the registrar (see below). Cumnor House Schools are located in South Croydon and Purley.
St David’s School was founded in 1912 by two Welsh sisters, the Misses Talfourd-Jones, and this year marks its centenary year. The school became a charitable trust in 1963.

ussell Junior School
Q A Q A
What is your name and title?
James C Thompson and I’m the Headmaster of Royal Russell Junior School in Coombe Lane, Croydon. What does Royal Russell offer to parents (and children)?
A truly exceptional education for their child. Our small class sizes and motivated, inspirational teachers ensure that every child is treated as an individual and has the opportunity to excel both in and out of the classroom. We have a beautiful 110 acre site with playing fields, swimming pool and woodland areas so children have a spacious and secure environment in which to learn and play. Our pupils are very happy and enjoy coming to school. We also operate a breakfast club and a full programme of after school activities, including a hot dinner, until 6pm.
Q A
How can parents get the best from your school?
Our parents are 100% committed to the school and are involved in their children’s education every step of the way. We encourage regular interaction between our parents and teachers and parents have plenty of opportunities to talk through their child’s progress. We run workshops for parents so that they know what their children are learning at each stage and can help them effectively with their homework.
There is a wonderful sense of community here and parents form genuine friendships. A busy Parents Association also meets regularly and organises events for the parents and children. 12
Q A
showing their grandparents their classrooms and work, and putting on a special performance.
Describe a typical school day ...
I like to greet our parents and children in the lobby each morning. It is important that parents and pupils feel that I am accessible and approachable to them. There is no typical day in this job and that is why it is so much fun. I have meetings, prospective parent tours, lesson visits, sports matches, assemblies and my favourite activity of giving merits and awards to individual children who have excelled. My door is always open and I’m happy to talk with anyone who arrives at my office to see me.
Q A
What is the busiest time for you?
24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You are never really away from the job. On a day to day basis it is always first thing in the morning when pupils, parents and staff all want to see me.
Q A
What is your biggest challenge at the moment?
The speed of developing mobile technology; iPad, notebook, smart phone, laptop are all becoming part of our daily lives from such a young age now. The challenge is how we integrate this technology into school life to ensure that it is enhancing the education that the children get, not taking over from it.
Q A
What is planned for the coming months?
This is a very busy school and there are always new and exciting things happening. We are about to hold our first Grandparents’ Day and the children are looking forward to
We have also just started the next phase of development on our Adventure Playground which the children adore. Our next Open Day is on the 21st March 2012, during a working school day. Our Year 6 children are looking forward to being tour guides and they always do us proud with their confidence and enthusiasm.
Q A
What do you do for lunch?
I always eat lunch in the dining hall with the children and teachers. All our meals are freshly prepared on site every day by our own chefs. The food really is delicious.
Q A
When the end of term comes, how do you feel?
I live with my family on the school site and my two daughters attend the Junior school, so my job is never far from my mind. The end of the summer term is always a proud moment as I can see how far each child has progressed through the year, and prepare the older children for their transition to Royal Russell Senior School.
Q A
What’s your best moment of running the Junior school so far?
It will sound corny, however, there are so many that it is impossible to select just one. The children make it a very special place to work and when you see an initiative that you have introduced making education better for them there is nothing better.

parenting
Tantrums! How cute are they?
Relentless: That is the word I tend to mutter when I’m stomping around in a grumpy haze, steadying myself on walls and furniture, hand clamped onto forehead, begging the powers that be for strength as I surrender to the teeth-clenching exasperation that sometimes constitutes motherhood. By Helena Foss ‘It’s just relentless.’ I hiss to myself. ‘Relentless! Why did no-one tell me just how damn hard this parenting thing was going to be?’ Actually, mothering is only truly relentless when I am not quite rising to the challenges it is chucking at me. And the last few months, dear readers, I have mostly been struggling with boundaries. Ah yes, that old brick wall that children just love kicking against, for as long as they possibly can, until their little metaphorical feet hurt too much to keep going. What is it with little ones? Why do they give us such a hard time? I mean, where is their respect?
Losing It Not long ago I found myself in that awful position of being the kind of mother I thought I would never be, losing my rag as I attempted to manage an allguns-blazing tantrum, smack bang in the middle of town, at rush hour. Reasoning was not getting anywhere. Neither was shouting. In the end, I had to grab my boy by the scruff of the neck and yank him onto a bus, holding him at arms’ length to avoid his attempts to scratch me. Determinedly ignoring the bus full of tut-tutting commuters, I pulled him and his flailing limbs upstairs and mercifully found a place right at the back for him to howl himself into exhaustion. Not my finest hour.
giving up the niceness and need-to-be-needed so prevalent in the female conditioning. Lying in bed that night, still stunned at just how hellish my afternoon had been, it dawned on me that I had been giving into everyone’s wants apart from my own – and lost my sense of self in the process. It was indeed mortifying to mentally assess just how resentful towards my family I had become; how relentless everyone’s needs felt upon me. My son had given me the gift of reflecting back just how secretly angry I was at myself, for relentlessly ignoring my own needs. Taking good care of oneself – as well as the children – I have found, means being able to set ground rules as a matter of fact. ‘This is Mummy time’ has to be said in the same straightforward manner as ‘the grass is green’. It is just how it is; no need to defend it with barbed wire and machine guns. As a friend of mine likes to say, ‘once everyone in the family knows their place, even the dog and the cat, we can all relax.’
Cute Tantrums ‘You know, when I think back to those days of tantrums,’ a mother of several teenagers reminisced to me recently, ‘I actually think it was really rather cute.’
I really thought I knew about boundaries. Not only do I have a background in therapy, I watched almost every episode of ‘The House of Tiny Tearaways’ with child psychology expert Professor Tanya Byron at the helm. The theory is great; but practically speaking, I had no idea how tough it would be to draw that all important line without resorting to threats, bribery or a big stick. With the jigging motion of sitting on the back seat of that bus starting to calm us both down and normalise my blood pressure, I noticed that my internal dialogue was sounding horribly judgemental: ‘After all I have done for you,’ my inner embittered doormat moaned, ‘you ungrateful little...’ Cue the scratchy sound of a needle veering off an old vinyl record. ‘Noooooo!’ I yelled inwardly, sitting up with a jolt as if waking up out of a nightmare. This was not the person I ever wanted to be.
Cute?! It took me a while to get my head round that one. Children’s little brains, I have to remind myself, are not wired for considered, rational behaviour. If they want something they want it. Now! Not having it at that immediate moment can bring on a full-blown grief reaction. As overt as they are with their sadness, they treat happiness and love with just as much immediacy and lack of inhibition. There is nothing quite like my son running up to fling his arms around me when I walk through the door, after nipping to the corner shop.
‘This is Mummy time’ has to be said in the same straightforward manner as ‘the grass is green’. It is just how it is
The Blame Game See, I know that blame is the easy option. The popular American family therapist Dr Phil insists that you have to teach people how to treat you. In fact, it is your job to point out when people are taking you for granted. But this takes courage, tenacity and, importantly, respect for oneself. It means 14
The other week, my son’s school nursery teacher told me she had asked the class if anyone knew what a tantrum was. My boy’s hand, apparently, shot up.
‘A tantrum,’ he said solemnly as he stood in front of the class, ‘is when you just pry and pry and pry.’ (He hasn’t got the hard ‘c’ sound nailed in that particular word just yet.) The discussion opened up and, one by one, the faces of his nursery chums lit up. ‘Oh yes,’ they chimed, ‘I do that sometimes too.’ And ‘So do I.’ A four-year-olds tantrum support group. Awwwww. Now that really is cute. Helena is a hypnotherapist and writer about all things holistic and spiritual. See:

mum time
What mums really want on Mother’s Day Psst, dads – here’s the inside track on what mums hope for on Mother’s Day. Grab some ideas to show her how much you care. A family gathering organise a weekend away? You’ll be rolling in Brownie points after any of these.
Mothering Sunday was originally a day-off from Lent, when servants were allowed to travel home to see their mums, and have a slapup dinner together.
Time with you, alone Chances are, since the kids came along, life’s been a little (or a lot) less romantic. Mother’s Day is the perfect time to put this right, with a hotel reservation slipped inside the card and the grandparents on standby for next weekend. Happy days all round.
Traditional presents were flowers and cakes – and you won’t go too far wrong if you stick to tradition. What mum doesn’t love having the family all around one table, with cake and flowers thrown in? But mum’s not making the feast, or doing the washing up – oh, no.
Personalised works of art
Book her favourite restaurant or pub, or make the meal yourself - and make sure you wash up afterwards.
If home is where your woman’s heart is, then a few personal touches to beautify it won’t go far wrong. Book a portrait session for the whole family with a great local photographer (see
Breakfast in bed Again, a traditional but excellent choice. Try making Jamie Oliver’s ridiculously easy American-style pancakes with fruit and maple syrup. (www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/fruit-recipes/apple-pancakes-with-the-girls) 1 cup each of flour and milk, plus one large egg: Add flowers and a pot of tea, and Bob’s your uncle. Follow up with a family walk – or take the kids off yourself – to let her really enjoy that extended lie-in.
Time to herself This is one thing we mums often crave more than anything, so organise her some proper “me time”. Book her a spa day or indulge her hobby (yoga/ writing/crafts/cookery) with a weekend course. If she doesn’t get to see her closest friends enough, maybe you could secretly liaise with them and

for some examples), or find a local service that turns an existing photo into a fantastic artwork. What woman could resist a framed print of her wedding day as a romantic gesture?
Something really unique With a little planning ahead, you and the kids can present mum with a truly unique and handmade creation. Take the children’s fingerprints or hand or foot casts, and have them made into pictures, keepsakes or jewellery – there are lots of places that do this now. Alternatively, take the kids to a pottery painting shop (try www.glazedallover.co.uk) and have a great time making a personalised plate, mug or vase that mum will treasure forever. Whatever you decide, we hope every mum has a wonderful Mother’s Day.

. When negotiating flexible working, make sure you think practically about what works for your family. For instance, make sure your childcare plans allow enough leeway so you don’t end up rushing everywhere all the time.
2
. Be incredibly organised. Have a list where you write down everything you have to do. You can then feel a sense of achievement as you tick it off, even if you are adding more things to it in the meantime.
3
. Prepare all the school/nursery/childminder stuff you need in the morning the night before, including uniforms and lunch boxes. That way you only have to get the kids up, dressed, breakfasted and out. Anything extra increases the stress levels and means you arrive at work as if you have been on a combat training course.
4
. Try to plan ahead so you are not always re-arranging childcare at the last minute. This includes inset days, holidays, Christmas plays, summer outings, and other predictable disruptions to the normal routine.
5
. Have multiple back-up plans. Negotiate with your partner, friends, nanny or childcare what you will do if there is an emergency such as school closure and try to share the burden. If you know in advance that there is going to be an emergency such as a school strike, negotiate with your work to see if you can work flexibly that day, eg, from home.
6
. Multi-task. Try to save time by doing several things at once. If you are going out to drop someone off, make sure you remember to do everything that needs doing outdoors, eg posting a letter, en route.
7
. Be good to your friends and family. You will need them. If a friend does you a favour, ensure you always repay it so that you can ask again in the future.
8 9
. Simplify your life - say no to the things you don’t need to do and build in some rest time. Everyone needs a duvet day occasionally. . Ask your friends for tips on what makes their lives easier. It may be something as simple as tying your door keys round your neck to stop you from always hunting for them. Learn from those who have gone before you.
10
. Be your own best friend. You spend your life doing things for other people. Ensure that you also build some time in for yourself, even if it is only to have a bath with some peace and quiet.

Always something new at Heritage Farm
Heritage Farm Nurseries in Wallington may be hard to find, but the effort is always worth it.
Jonathan Daniels, owner, said the destination aims to cater for young families and has something for everyone. It is, he said, unique in the area with its combination of aquatics; marine (voted the best specialist in the UK twice running); tropical and coldwater fish; reptiles; small animals; poultry and a warm, friendly café. The family activities centre on the large café which is, in winter months, heated by a roaring log fire. Thoughtful touches include bright, clean baby facilities, access for buggies with ramps everywhere and an inside Lego/Duplo play area close to the tables in the café.
Heritage offers reptiles ...
tunnels, over bridges and to the station. All of this can be enjoyed at Heritage whatever the weather.
cuddly, furry animals ...
... as well as a huge Heritage Railway
The food includes good value fresh, healthy meals with something for everyone to enjoy; each meal can include a trip to the fresh salad bar. The children’s menu offers a variety of meals, including a pick’n’mix lunch box, burgers, fish fingers, nuggets and much more. Jonathan’s wife Fiona said every meal is prepared to the high standard with good quality ingredients, not using any GM products. Prices are reasonable with a full English costing £5.49, and children’s meals including a drink at £3.99. The café has free Wi-Fi for all customers to use and a computer on the counter for customers to like their Facebook page and receive a free token to watch Thomas go round the huge model railway. Outside, in the roofed area, large vines trail over the trelliswork concealing the dinosaurs dotted around. The Heritage Railway allows enthusiasts of all ages to control their trains through
As the weather warms up, families can venture out into the large café garden with plenty of seats and a huge sandpit for the children to enjoy in the sun. Strawberry patches are there for the customers to enjoy with their cream teas with freshly picked strawberries and homemade strawberry jam. Across the large private car park is the main shop area, which includes both marine and tropical fish, with a reptile house.
This is where the animalhandling parties take place. The children have a chance to get up close and personal with the animals of their choice ranging from fluffy hamsters, rabbits and chinchillas or, if they’re brave enough, snakes, lizards and caiman. Fiona says the staff talk to the parents and plan out the kind of animal encounters the children would prefer; many of the girls prefer the cute and cuddly but some boys – and a few of the girls – go for snakes, spiders and reptiles. Heritage Farm Nurseries is a nationally renowned specialist exotic animal centre and all their dedicated staff know the animals well. Fiona said the handlers know the individual characters of each animals and leave any which may be a bit moody or aggressive to one side, selecting only the most child friendly individuals for the party.

Do animals have character? A resounding “yes” to this question from Jonathan and Fiona. Fiona said that because a lot of reptiles live for 20 years or more, they can really get to know you and form a kind of bond over time. Also, many reptiles are very low-maintenance but are incredibly friendly and make fantastic pets. A typical beginner’s reptile is the Bearded Dragon, a type of lizard from Australia. She said if you get one of these when it is young, it will get to know you and love to sit on your shoulder and cuddle up to your neck whilst you are watching TV. In particular, Heritage has sold a lot of this type of animal to parents with disabled children. They find they can create a strong connection with the lizard or snake and learn to look after it, or simply care for it and gain a great deal from the experience and relationship. Heritage Farm Nurseries is definitely unique and provides something for everyone to enjoy. They have found a niche in the market for a child-friendly garden centre with a difference. Heritage is well worth a visit, so make sure you go and see what they have to offer. Only seeing is believing. 17
