Invisible Goodness Wrapped Up in Fun Perform founder, Lucy Quick tells us more. Perform classes are a bit like a pasta sauce that’s filled with hidden vegetables: kids think it’s really tasty and don’t realise that it’s full of healthy nutrition. I see our classes like this - invisible goodness wrapped up in an hour of games, role-play, dance routines and songs. The children think they’re enjoying an hour of fun but they’re also being equipped with essential confidence-building social skills. We all want our children to be happy, feel confident enough to try new things and interact well with others. Taking part in regular drama activities encourages confident and fluent speaking, boosts reading and writing abilities and enhances coordination and spatial awareness. Rescuing a mermaid from a pirate ship might seem like just imaginative improvisation for 6 year olds, but it’s teaching problem-solving and team-work too.

Animal Antics at Banstead Prep Children in Banstead Prep’s preprep Animal Antics club have been learning about koalas and how the Australian bush fires have caused koalas’ homes to be destroyed, and a lot of their food lost. The children were really sad and wanted to help the lost and scared koalas. They decided to raise money by holding a cake sale and send that to a charity. (WWF’s Protect-a-Koala campaign) Miss Law, who leads the co-curricular club explained “We wanted to make as much money as possible so we thought about getting families and friends to help, and the idea grew to became a whole Year 1 event.” The children in Animal Antics made posters to tell everyone about the cake sale and lots of children and staff brought in cakes and money. Everyone had a great time at the cake sale and we raised £263.70, which has enabled us to protect 10 koalas! More info: www.bansteadprep.com

What’s for lunch? By the time they reach their reception year almost a quarter of children will be overweight or obese and a similar amount will have teeth decay. Therefore good food habits can never begin too early. It is important for growing children to eat a variety of starch; fruit and vegetables; protein; and dairy so a good balance of nutrients can be gained. Lunch at preschool or nursery should provide your child with about a third of their daily requirement for energy and other nutrients. Teacher-led Play B C offers fun, yet challenging early education and prioritises relationships not only within preschool but also with the wider community. We offer free school meals to children in receipt of early years pupil premium and are working towards Healthy Early Years London award. More than just a place, at Play B C every day is a learning adventure.

Education
Here is a handy reminder of different learning styles. Visual

Exam Preparation Techniques for Different Learning Styles By Claire Winter
Prefers to receive written words Enjoys reading and writing assignments Processes information by writing notes
Kinesthetic
Learns best through a tactile process
Whether it be for SATs, 11+ or school exams, your child is likely to need to do some preparation at home. Of course, your child’s school may provide practice exam papers which are important tools but it may be that your child needs to hone in on revising particular subjects or topics in order to complete these successfully. So how do you help equip a primary school child with the techniques they need to revise? Educators, scientists, and psychologists have developed different models to understand the different ways that people learn. One popular theory, the VARK model identifies four primary types of learners: visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic. Each learning type responds best to a different method of teaching. For example, auditory learners remember information best after reciting or explaining it back, while kinesthetic learners jump at the chance to participate in a hands-on activity. Most pupils don’t learn in just one way, so often using a combination of techniques will work best.
Once you have established your child’s preferred learning style, you can try a variety of these methods to help your child prepare successfully for exams.
Prefers to create concrete personal experiences Processes information by recreating and practicing
Mind Mapping
A mind map is a visual representation of information, introduced in an organised, but innovative method. This method is great for visual learners. Mind maps can be as detailed as your child likes, organising notes and suggestions around bigger, connecting ideas, around one idea, or around several topics. Mind maps can enhance memory and learning by 15% compared to conventional study methods.
Creating Visual Reminders
Note-taking and highlighting are mainly reading-based learning techniques, but flashcards, post-it notes, and mind maps all take advantage of visual recognition too. If your child is naturally creative, then making flashcards with essential keywords or formulas on them can help them recall what they are studying. Try sticking flashcards or post-it
notes around the house and every time your child comes across one, encourage them to describe the keywords or information in more detail.
Organising Information
Children who learn by reading and writing will like planning their work by topic Not only will this help them access the information they have to learn much faster, but the act of planning can make a child feel more in charge of their learning. Visual learners can use colour coded post-it notes to help remind them about the different topics too.
Note Taking
Taking notes on important facts from current classwork can be a good way for your child to keep the essentials in mind. If your child

Verbally Explaining
11+ University
Another great revision technique for auditory learns is to ask your child to verbally explain something they retain more information revising this way. Ask your child questions about their classwork such as: “Can you tell me more about Xyz?” This will encourage your child to use memory recall to remember the important facts. You can also use questions to identify any gaps in their knowledge. An excellent revision game to make your child the teacher. Get them to pretend they are in front of a class and talk about certain topics as if they were teaching themselves. This is a great learning technique for primary school kids that enjoy drama and acting things out. Listening to a Recording or Watching a Video Auditory learners can record information (even in the form of songs they make up!) and listen to it. Watching videos is also a good way to revise.

First Class Learning provide structured, yet flexible learning programmes in Maths, English and 11+. Their materials build long-lasting confidence and help learners to become secure in their subjects. The maths and English programmes are written by qualified and experienced subject specialists and are designed around the learning outcomes of the current National Curriculum.
Assembling Charts and Diagrams Kinaesthetic learners learn by assembling charts and creating diagrams.
Kumon Croydon, Shirley Study Centre
Flashcards can also help kinaesthetic learners; if you physically turn them over and write on them, it engages many different parts of the brain. Keeping fingers busy, tracing words or tapping out sequences can help your child retain knowledge too.
Kumon study helps children of any age and any ability to shine. We aim to give our students the tools they need to enjoy learning. Our programmes establish strong foundations in maths and English, helping your child to feel confident enough to tackle challenging work.

Using a mixture of many learning techniques is the most successful way to help your child retain information. You will soon learn what they like doing and what helps the most in their tests and exams.
Trouble with Handwriting? Handwriting is an important occupation for everyone, from a young age. Despite modern technology, handwriting will always be needed when writing a shopping list, signing a card or filling in a form etc. An easy task? No! Before a child can start to write, they need to have developed core strength to support their torso, adequate shoulder stability to stabilise their arm movements and fine motor skills to control their pencil. Handwriting also requires visual motor integration skills. A child needs to be able to draw basic shapes such as a circle, square, triangle and diagonal lines, as these shapes make-up letter formations. In addition, they need a good pincer grasp to hold a pencil correctly. Activities such as puzzles, threading, arts and crafts, drawing, colouring, using play dough, to name a few, are all great activities for developing pre-writing skills. Interested in knowing more? I need more space! Find me one parent who isn’t overwhelmed by toys or clutter at this time of year. “I need more space… I need to get rid of some toys... I need somewhere to put the toys”. The aftermath of the most generous season can leave you feeling swamped with kind gifts and a lack of feeling grateful. Many families feel over crowded at the best of times. Although most measures of overcrowding do not include the perception of being overcrowded. It is usually defined as the presence of too many people in the available space and facilities. There are plenty of studies on the effects of overcrowding and Shelter summarises a number that show overcrowding leads to “stress, tension, and sometimes family break-up, anxiety and depression, a lack of privacy... overcrowding can inhibit education and child development by causing: difficulties in studying and doing homework, emotional problems leading to developmental delays for children”. Increased physical contact, lack of sleep, lack of privacy and poor hygiene practices and spread of infectious diseases are some of the worst case scenarios. As a busy family with a packed home, what can you do? Part of the feeling of being crowded can be accounted for by household circumstances, such as the degree of control you have over your space it might be time to take control.

Make some room Literally. The traditional clear out and declutter is popular for a reason and so are Marie Kondo’s principles, forcing you to take a look at what you’re keeping hold of. Another way of literally making room, is to consider a loft conversion or extension. This author once read that you’re one room away from feeling less crowded. LMB Group are often called to help families make the most of their home by adding a playroom, or double bedroom in the loft space. With over 25 years’ experience in their family run business all it takes is a quick glance at your loft for Dad Lee to work out what’s possible in your loft.
