Victorian foundling Hetty Feather has captured the imaginations of young readers since the book by Jac queline Wilson was first published in 2008. It tells the tale of spirited Hetty, who is often in trouble, and brings to life the stories of children who were left with the Foundling Hospital, in London.
“Homework is good for your child as it develops positive habits and skills, such as discipline, which will stay with them for life,” said Vassos.

Netflix or Kindle?
It’s a privilege to be able to lead a school where I can give back to a community where my journey into headship began, and I could see it is on an upward journey. The children in the school currently are great young people. They are curious, polite. They have good relationships with their teachers. They ask questions and they have passions, and ambition to do well. They love being in this school. I could see that there is a lot of care that goes into young people here.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I’m actually alright with DIY. I’m a bit of a problem-solver so I try not to let things defeat me. I am really good at baking cakes. I am the cake-baker in the family and like to rise to the chal lenge of a request.
What was it about the school that made you want to apply for the post?

Premier League or Last Night of the Proms?
I’ve always been passionate about comprehensive education. Children in comprehensive education should have exactly the same opportunities as children in private education. I want to make them aim high, to go into high-level apprenticeships, business or university with a passion for learninglife-long learning.
One of the last was Alicia Keys. I do like a quiz-night too but my general knowledge is pretty poor so I’m not the person to have on your team!
Absolutely. It’s about being a visible presence, taking an interest in your young people’s lives — and having an honesty and a transparency with them about where their life can take them if they make great decisions and they work with us. As a head teacher you are the person who is looking at the teaching and learning, the opportuni ties that children have, and you are the strategic vision behind the school to make sure that all of those things fall into place for every young person.
I like all types of theatre especially new plays though I am not a big musicals fan. I go to a range of music concerts.

It’s got to be Netflix. I do love my Kin dle but I do love Netflix.
Why comprehensive?
It’s got to be the Premier League. How do you hope to involve parents and carers in their child’s education? In any way possible because the part nership between home and school is crucial. It’s very important to hear the parents’ perspective on how we work together to shape the school in the way that we want.
What inspired you to become a teach er, and later a headteacher? My degree was in drama and educa tion. During my PGCE, at one of my training schools, I had a boy who had Asperger’s who had never spoken at all for any of his previous teachers. By the end of my work with him, he was per forming drama pieces. That was an in spiring moment for me and I thought, ‘this is what I want to do.’ I believe in children having access to all areas of the curriculum but I have a real value for the arts subjects and how they can impact the development of the whole child for life beyond school. Can a head can make a difference to individual pupils?
I will hope that they will say that I’ve got very high expectations of them, that I listen and that I work alongside them to make sure they have the best experience and opportunities.
It’s a cliché, but I did want to be a teacher. I didn’t want to be anything else. What are your most useful and useless skills?

Teaching the love of learning

Now feels like the time to pause and consider what and how we teach in our schools. We have the responsibility and privilege to ensure each child’s school experience goes deeper than the acquisition of facts and figures — to foster joy and understanding of the learning process and to equip them with strategies to navigate the future. With high-stakes end-of-year tests replaced by informative, child-friendly, rigorous alternatives, there is a different sense of purpose to primary at King Alfred School. Time is made to analyse the attributes of successful learners. Commitment, curiosity, courage, and compassion are celebrated and nurtured. Self-management, teamwork, critical thinking and research skills are discussed through the lens of different subjects. We have elevated expectations of what can be achieved. Best of all we are having fun. The school is buzzing with questions, reflections, ideas and laughter… these feel like some of the most important things school can offer our children. More music in schools
Tens of thousands of children will be given the chance to learn a new instrument as part of a new national plan for music education in the UK. The plan sets out the govern ment’s ambition to give “every child the opportunity to develop a love of music.” Made in consultation with music teachers and young people in the music industry, it involves a raft of new investments and measures to support music education. £25million will be made available for schools to buy musical instruments and equipment, including adapted instruments for children with special education needs. According to updated guidance, schools will be asked to offer at least one hour of music curriculum a week. Every school will be expected to have a designated music lead or head of department.

Perhaps they’re in a different class or their closest friend has left the school and they’re struggling to adjust and find a new bestie or gang. Regardless, there are a couple of things you can do to boost your child’s friendships. Firstly, of course, talk to your child’s teacher and ask if there’s anyone they think your son or daughter might particularly gel with. Next up, invite them over for a playdate or arrange to meet them and their parent in the park. Challenges: each new year brings new privileges – and new expectations
The Plus Programme is a comprehensive early learning programme designed by teachers for parents with children aged 12 to 30 months. be finding the new school year more tiring for whatever reason, or they could be hungrier due to a growth spurt. So first up, check these basics. If they’re getting tired, look to adjust their bedtime, if possible. A giveaway here is if the grouchiness tends to happen towards the end of the week. If it’s hunger, give them a snack for the journey home if you can. Should neither of these be the cause, the grouchies could be down to something they’re finding difficult to handle or upsetting at school and they’re deflecting their stress or anger onto you. Spend some time trying to tease out what might be going on. Are they having issues with friends or being bullied perhaps? Talk to their teacher to find out if they’re aware of any problems too.

If you offer foods and they are refused and then you don’t offer them again, it’s unlikely that your little ones will grow to accept them. However, if you keep offering rejected foods – without any actual pressure to eat them – they start to become familiar and this has been shown to help toddlers to be more willing to try them.

Charlotte Stirling-Reed is The Baby and Child Nutritionist. Her new book How to Feed your Toddler: Everything You Need to Know to Raise Happy, Independent Little Eaters is published by Ebury Press.
We’re not talking about turning your table into a racing track but simply making it enjoyable for them, engaging them and allowing them to explore the foods on offer without too much restriction, pressure or "mealtime rules". What’s interpreted as "fun" will vary from family to family but you could start with some calming music, a funky table cloth or kicking off with some silly faces, whatever helps to bring some joy to the table.
By Charlotte Stirling-Reed
Tricky toddler eating tips

It’s actually pretty normal for toddlers to be picky with their food, partly due to developing independence, partly due to "neophobia" — reluctance to try new foods — which generally kicks in during the toddler years and partly because growth rates start to slow around this age which can result in their appetites simply taking a bit of a dip.
My main tips:
Remember, it’s a long game
Start by pretending you simply don’t care if they eat or not Research shows that the more PRESSURE we put on toddlers to "eat up" the more likely it is to have the opposite effect. So, if you want to help your toddlers to enjoy more foods, try to fight your natural instincts and be nonchalant at mealtimes.

Overly restricting foods that children can see or are asking for rarely works. This can make the restricted foods more desirable and put pressure on mealtimes and eating occasions. Instead, try to "covertly" restrict by role-modelling what to eat yourself, showing and offering a BALANCE. Monitor how often cakes, biscuits and sweets are available at home and avoid referring to these as "treats" as this suggests that these foods are the most desirable!
If you speak to the parents of most toddlers, they’ll probably tell you that life is somewhat turbulent! Toddlers are at this lovely, exciting age where they are really exploring the world and figuring things out and their brains are firing and learning new things every day. This exploration can come with its challenges though and a BIG one is often seen at mealtimes with food refusal!

Make it a mealtime they WANT to be part of If you think about it, toddlers are all about fun and exploring. That’s simply the aim of their day. So, try and make mealtimes a part of the fun journey too.

The tips and tricks you put in place to help to support your toddler’s eating will not work overnight. Toddlers are constantly testing and figuring out the "rules" and what works. So, try to stay consistent and persistent while rolling out some of these tried and tested strategies.
Employ the line "That’s okay, you don’t have to eat it" and stick to it Again, taking the pressure off and putting the ball in their court at mealtimes, helps them to have a sense of autonomy and feel like they have some control. In time, this can often help encourage them to WANT to eat a little more.
Offer a variety, even foods that are refused
It’s best to role model the actions and behaviours you want your toddler to emulate so in time they learn HOW to eat and HOW enjoy a variety of foods.
“I don’t like it”, “yukky”, “I hate broccoli." Sound familiar? These are common phrases heard by those of us who have toddlers around the table and it’s pretty common for parents to express concern to me about this. The toddler years are often about independence and our little ones are trying to seek some autonomy in their day-to-day lives, and that includes their food choices too.
rarely works in the long run. It’s far better to sit back, take the pressure off and focus on making mealtimes positive occasions for toddlers, including trying to spend time with your little one and engage with them over meals.

As you might expect, I read a lot! But I also love going to the theatre, especially immersive theatre, when you get to interact with characters and sets. I’m also learn ing bookbinding at the moment, how to make my own books from scratch and I’m really enjoying that!
I probably spent more time in libraries than bookshops as a child, as it was the best way to keep up with how much I read without bankrupting my parents! For parents I would say one of the most important things is sharing your love of reading – making sure your children see you reading for pleasure, and talk about what you enjoy with them and ask them what they think. Encourage them to take the time to find books they love. It’s okay if they don’t finish every book if they don’t like it!

A bookwanderer is a reader who can travel inside of books, and that’s what my series is all about. My heroine Tilly discovers she is a bookwanderer when she is 11 and she travels inside books including Alice in Wonderland and Anne of Green Gables, and she realises perhaps there’s some family secrets all tied up with the secret magical community of bookwanderers!
Lyra from Northern Lights was also a big influence on me when I was growing up in the way that she stands up for what’s right even when it’s difficult and dangerous. With all the different roles you have, you must be a very busy woman! How do you like to spend your downtime?

Anne of Green Gables is one of my all-time favourites, and introducing young readers to her has been one of the greatest joys of being published! I think that I’d have to pick her – she’s such an incredible, timeless creation. She’s so kind and funny and has so many big feelings.

Author Judy Blume. I loved her books as a teenager, and she was very open and kind and wise when I spoke to her.
As a self-confessed bookworm, living in a bookshop is still my dream! Did you spend lots of time in bookshops as a child? What advice would you give parents trying to encourage a love of reading in their children?

The honest answer is no! I’ve always enjoyed reading and writing, and I knew I wanted a job that was to do with that, but I wasn’t sure exactly what was the right fit for me. I’ve been a librarian, a books journalist, and a literary scout and I really enjoyed them all. It was only when I had the idea for Pages & Co that I seriously started think ing about being a novelist!

“Most people get stuck thinking they need to be the next Elon Musk... It’s not true.”
16 Families North BusinessLondon

By Gabrielle Nash
“When my son was little, I designed a portable toilet for children and always dreamed of seeing it for sale on the high street. Being a single mum gives me the drive to get up each day and show my son what it means to dream and make it reality.” says, Zoë Chapman, founder of “2020KiddiWhizz.waslooking like a write-off for developing the business, but within days of attending the Rebel course, I’d utilised all the hard work I’d previously done and took a leap of faith. Within a month, I was holding my manufactured product and had formed a company with a clear Simonvision.”Paine, the co-founder of Rebel Business School, shares his tips for start ing a business alongside parenting: Figure out your idea Most people get stuck thinking they need to be the next Sara Blakely or Elon Musk to start a business. It’s not true. Look at your past skills, your hobbies or things you find frustrating to find a simple prod uct or service that you can sell. Be kind to yourself, take small, consistent steps and build the business at the pace that fits with your family. Borrow, barter and get stuff for free As a parent, you don’t have money to waste. Search sites like Facebook Mar ketplace or Freecycle for physical things, negotiate with independent venues to bring people in during their down time or swap your skills with someone else to get what you need. Sell your value before you create it Get paid in advance for your product or service so you can use your customer’s cash to start developing or building your product. You can make this work with ANY kind of business, you just have to think differently about how you make it happen and your customers have to TRUST that you’ll deliver on your promises.
The changing world of work: what can we do to prepare for the future?
The key things to remember?
1. Interpersonal and communication skills are vital, because the human factor in a job will still be valuable
If you’re looking for the flexibility to work around your kids or make extra money to help tackle the rising cost of living, starting your own business could be the option.
Learn more If you want help to turn your ideas into a business and get your new venture off the ground, join the next 6-week online Rebel Business School course. It starts on October 17 and is free to attend. Find out more at therebelschool.com/enfield
Zoë Chapman: turned her idea into a business with Rebel Business School

It is exciting when your child heads off to school for the first time. What will their first day be like? What will spark their interest? The goal of school is to give your child the necessary tools and skills to enter our grown-up world and ultimately find a job. But what kind of job will that be? The world of work is undergoing a trans formation and future careers will look very different to those of today. Many of the jobs our children will do don’t currently exist, just as the top ten jobs in 2011 didn’t exist in 2004. According to Randstad, it is estimated that today’s students will have 10 to 14 jobs before their 38th birthday. What type of jobs? Naturally our images of the future workplace are dominated by artificial in telligence, robotics and automation. And while it is predicted that the “march of the robots” will remove a quarter of jobs, experts believe that the future of AI is not to replace humans but to change what humans are capable of. Interactive Scientific, a British software company, believes that we can teach children key skills like good commu nication, persistence and problem solving, all before knowing what future technologies will look like. These skills will be vital for our children to navigate an unpredictable jobs market. What can you do to prepare your child? However good an education your child is receiving, there are very few establishments with a futureproof cur riculum, one that can wholly offer the development of skills needed for getting a job in 15 to 20 years’ time. This is perhaps why more and more em phasis is being placed on vocational ed ucation. The Edge Foundation works on developing the future of education. They argue that old certainties like a university degree will no longer guarantee a job. Edge Chief Executive Alice Barnard be lieves “We need to support young people to capitalize on their creativity, develop the problem-solving, communication and team-working skills that employers are crying out for.”
2. The ability to adapt is crucial. One set of skills will not last 20 years, so teaching a child to be resilient and comfortable with change will help them to continuously learn and evolve.

So if your child seems like they’re not excelling in traditional measures of excellence, don’t panic. Instead focus on developing their other skills and exploring all pathways. A child who is behind on maths and English might have fantastic potential people skills. If they’re empathetic and kind, or adaptable and able to find solutions, that could take them further than their academic ability and give them the foundation to tackle a myriad of roles in the future. How to build a business around your children
Pamela: In every class, our students are up on their feet, developing confidence, solo speaking skills, improvisation techniques, characterisation and performance skills. At Achieve Arts, we teach the LAMDA syllabus in a really fun way. We work towards LAMDA accredited exam inations which includes working on monologues, duologues, musical theatre repertoire and public speaking. The parent and student choose which syllabus to study. We aim to put on a live showcase every year. Our last one, at Jacksons Lane Theatre, Highgate, in March, was a sellout with phenomenal feedback from parents and industry professionals. How do you tailor your sessions for different ages? Karen: Working with different age groups is fabulous. You see the progression of each student every week, whether it’s working on a poem with 4 and 5-year-olds or on a medal grade with our 16-year-olds. We split the students into three groups: Introductory Level for 4 to 6-year-olds, Foundation 7-9, and Intermediate for 10+. Our team of wonderful teachers have trained at top drama schools and have a wealth of experience, not only as teachers but as professional performers. Do your students go on to work in the industry? Pamela: We set up The Achieve Arts Agency (www.achieveartsagency. co.uk) to give our students professional opportunities in Theatre, Television and Film. We only represent our students so we know what roles they would be right for. We have students working professionally in The West End and in television commercials and films. It takes a lot of commitment going to auditions and putting yourself out there, so the agency is not for every student, only for those who wish to pursue the professional route. You also run online sessions. How do those work?

You can find your nearest venue on our website and book a free trial.
You’re going from strength to strength. I hear you have new classes in Mill Hill and Harringay, adding to your other North London venues Karen: Yes, we are very excited to be expanding our sessions to Mill Hill! Our sessions are on a Wednesday at Trinity Church, for 4 to 16-year-olds. Many of our weekly classes in Crouch End, Muswell Hill, Hampstead Garden Sub urb, Tufnell Park and Pinner have wait ing lists, so we are definitely excited to be starting in Mill Hill and on Saturdays on The Harringay Ladder. great escape
It can be a challenge to find an engaging trip out for chil dren that exposes them to intellectual challenges - while they think they’re just having fun. Immersive experiences like escape games use those skills and make them have real “Atconsequences.clueQuest,we believe that our escape rooms help devel op skills and imagination, and most of all, are great fun!” said Freya Carroll, from clueQuest. Studies have shown the skills that escape rooms help chil dren cultivate, lead them to bright futures. Builds Teamwork Teamwork happens naturally in an escape room as chil dren start to collaborate to achieve their goal in the game. Sharing that common goal can push children to try harder.
The excitement that comes with solving a puzzle as a group creates a long-lasting memory.
Encourages Out-of-the-Box Thinking
Learning your times tables is one thing, but escape rooms offer the opportunity to think in a different way. “When all you have is a clue and a puzzle, you figure out how to think outside the box, next to the box and perhaps even under neath the box!” said Freya.
Immersive “You can find yourself in any number of places, from a safe house to the lair of an evil professor. Even the quietest child gets swept away by the stories they discover,” Freya added.
