Children’s favourite Albert
The Tortoise is covering new ground in his latest book, Albert and The Pond, where he finds a new friend, a tadpole, who vanishes suddenly, leaving Albert upset. After his hibernation, Albert wakes to find his new friend back in the pond, but something about them seems a bit different.
It is the fifth instalment in the series and follows on the success of Albert Supersize, in which he must tackle dinosaurs and a volcano, before helping his little friends with a big problem of their own.
Perfect for use in Key Stage 1 STEM classes, Albert and the Pond, published by Graffeg, presents the lifecycle of a frog through Ian Brown’s humorous and fun-filled writing and Eoin Clarke’s colourful illustrations. Families North London has teamed up with Graffeg to offer readers the chance to win one of FIVE PAIRS Albert The Tortoise books.

Children’s drama school Perform is hosting London’s first ever children’s theatre festival this summer in Coram’s Fields, Bloomsbury. This sixweek festival features professional actors across four musicals, two of which are original productions. Shows run daily from July 22 to August 28.
The line-up includes The Three Billy Goats Gruff, a smash hit musical adventure for 2-7 year olds. For 3-8 year olds, Elephant and Piggie’s We are in a Play! will be staged, based on Mo Willems’ wonderful books. Perform’s brandnew Caribbean adventure, Mermaids & Pirates, will be presented for ages 4-11. Finally, for ages 7-14, another original show from Perform, The Dream, inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, rebooted for a new generation.
As well as these four fantastic musicals for children aged 2-14, there are special guest evening events for teens plus a charming all-day café and, of course, all the usual childcentred delights of Coram's Fields.

Scientists led by experts at the University of Birmingham evaluated every study into the link between vitamin D and miscarriage and found a significant association with deficiency and risk of miscarriage. They say treating deficiency before conception may be more beneficial than during the first trimester and have called for further research.

Researchers in Hendon are looking to work with parents – and their infant scientists – to investigate babies' understanding of music and the role it plays in early development and communication.
PhD researcher Tatiana Sobolewska said: "We think that sounds produced in caregiver-child communication reflect emotional cues that are also used in music, and we investigate this to better understand the basis of language development."
So she is inviting parents or caregivers with 4-9 month olds take part in her exciting research, under the supervision of MCCLab Director Dr Fabia Franco.
"Caregivers can come to Middlesex University for one 30-45-minute session at our babyLab," said Tatiana. All participants are awarded £10 Amazon voucher. There is free parking at the site in Hendon, NW4, and baby changing facilities are available.
Scan this code to see a visit to babyLab. For more details and bookings, go to www.mcclabmdx.com/visit or contact Tatiana at t.g.sobolewska@mdx.ac.uk

“... It’s been built with the children themselves," said Kerri Burton, a playworker at Somerford Grove Adventure Playground which is full of exciting climbing structures, jumping-off platforms, swings and slides.
"Our structures are totally unique and ever-changing,” added Kerri. One of the most important things you’ll find in an adventure playground is “loose parts”. These are repurposed objects, such as tyres, buckets, cardboard boxes, fabrics and rope - which can be played with in countless ways and can become anything in a child’s imagination.
There’s something for all ages, from the impressively high treehouse to a little boat and sandpit.
Somerford Grove, run by Haringey Play Association, is entirely free to all children and is staffed by playworkers but the playworkers do not direct play. Instead they ensure chidren have an inspiring space in which to play and are
empowered to make their own choices without unnecessary interference from adults. “You might see children building fires, using axes to chop wood, leaping off the top of structures onto crash mats, playfighting or riding around in shopping trolleys,” said Kerri.
“When children play with risk they can face their fears, problem solve, become resilient and figure out how to keep themselves safe. We also have art and craft materials and children are free to make as much mess as they like and leave their mark on the space.”
The playground is open access meaning children are free to come and go as they wish. There are sessions for children aged 6+ only as well as family sessions for parents and younger children.
Now 20 years old, Somerford Grove, N17, is fundraising to provide more activities and trips. Find out more at www.haringey-play.org.uk

Does your child struggle with anxiety, low selfesteem, periods of depression, or other mental health difficulties?
Do they have difficulties with friendships, or struggle to cope in school? Do they have sensory difficulties, where they might feel overwhelmed in certain situations, or get upset in response to particular triggers?
There is help out there! There are different types of therapy that use non verbal approaches to help children feel calm and secure, allowing them to express themselves in a safe space at their own pace.
Occupational and Sensory Integration Therapy might focus on vestibular and proprioceptive perception, balance, and postural control, or increasing a child’s tolerance for touch and sound sensations. This kind of therapy will involve lots of physical movement, and is designed to provide each child with tailored sensory-motor experiences to meet their individual needs
In addition, the therapist will identify supportive activities, adaptations and strategies for home and school. It is common for people with neurodevelopmental conditions to have sensory processing difficulties and to find this type of therapy helpful.
Creative Arts Therapies are forms of psychotherapy that use art, music, drama, dance, play and creativity to support emotional and mental wellbeing and development. They allow people to communicate thoughts and feelings that they find difficult to put into words, through creativity and the arts, and can be especially beneficial for children and those who find it hard to talk.
Arts therapists help people make sense of things and understand themselves better, and find new ways to look at problems or difficult situations. There is no need for prior skills or experience in creative arts.

Four of the most dreaded words for parents in the English language are: "Are we there yet?"
Recent research has found that children will ask this question just over half an hour into a car journey and repeat it four times during the average two-hour car trip.
However, when you look at long car journeys from a child’s point of view, should we be surprised? For young children, hours and minutes have little concrete meaning until they reach about age 7. It will still take many more years for kids to develop their impulse control and ability to wait. To help them understand the length of a journey, use solid physical markers, such as: "We’ll be there after we have our next snack," or "When the fields turn into a town again."
Before you set off, look out for places to stop - parks, service stations or playgrounds along the way. Build in short exercise breaks at these places to mark your progress in stages
Journeys also pass more quickly if we reframe them as a chance to spend uninterrupted time with the children where the journey is part of the fun. Download a ready-made picture car bingo game, so kids can cross off a square every time they see something like a police car, a bridge or a tractor.
Asking your child what they would like to bring with them to help the time pass will help them feel more in control. Suggest they put together their "journey kit" in a bag to hang on the back of your seat. It helps to also have a few novelties that you can produce at different stages of the journey. For younger kids try window wax crayons and stickers they can use to decorate the windows. For older ones, have binoculars or a compass so they can track your progress and appreciate what they are seeing. By appreciating where your child is at developmentally, you can make journeys more pleasant for the whole family.
Take off shoes If you expect your kids will want to expend some energy kicking the back of your seat, take off their shoes! You won’t feel it as much and it won't be as satisfying for them.
Head off tantrums over lost toys. Pack a pair of kitchen tongs to retrieve the fiddly toy that kids tend to drop down the sides of seats. And try not to take too many fiddly things, like Lego people and Polly Pockets.
“
Appreciating where your child is at developmentally, can make journeys more pleasant for the whole family
Pack a towel for each child. It can be used as a blanket, a mop for any spills or on toddlers’ laps to help toys stay put. You can also tuck one end into the window and hang it as a curtain to keep out the sun. If children get hot and sweaty, moisten the towel with water to help keep them cool. Pack a potty. If you are still toilet training, bring a potty. Line it with a nappy for easy disposal of the mess.

The performing arts is a wide and vibrant industry including theatre, music, dance, film making and more.
With its many facets, the performing arts can open up a world of possibility for young people to develop and grow in an environment that is safe and supportive. By providing a platform for creativity, fostering confidence, and promoting a sense of connectedness and community, the performing arts play a vital role in shaping the lives of young people.
Be Confident
Confidence is fundamental to a young person’s development. It enables them to have a go, try new things and succeed and fail in a safe environment. The performing arts naturally helps young people build confidence as they practise routines, perform in front of fellow students, family and friends, and receive and act on feedback. All this work culminating in the thrill of performing for an audience, with the knowledge that they have built the skills to create great work.
Be Creative
Of course, the performing arts are an outlet for creativity! Whether learning a dance routine, acting in a play, or pitching a film idea, the performing arts gives young people an opportunity to use their imagination
and express themselves. Flexing their creative muscles allows young people to think outside the box and find creative solutions to problems they encounter in their work but also in their everyday lives.
Be Connected
There are very few industries that rely on teamwork as much as the performing arts. Whether they are rehearsing, performing or filming, the performing arts allows young people to connect with others who share their passion. Connecting with their peers, young people form bonds, deepen their empathy and develop compassion for the world around them.
At The Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts, we believe that the performing arts can have a huge, positive impact on the lives of young people. Every week, our students learn new skills and make new friends though our three core modules, Comedy & Drama, Film & Television and Musical Theatre Through our ethos of "Be Yourself, Be Amazing" our students have the confidence to put themselves out there, the creativity to think differently and the community to feel supported while doing so.

A friend of mine recently vowed never again to host a sleepover after her husband scared a gaggle of eight-year-olds while sleepwalking to the fridge in his dressing gown.
Personally, we’ve enjoyed hosting sleepovers in our family and most have gone fairly smoothly – with one notable exception when the dog punctured an inflatable mattress. Assuming any pets are safely under control and having learned from experience, here are our key rules.
Choose your night carefully
Inevitably, the kids will end up getting to sleep – considerably later than usual and feeling very tired the next day. Sleeping at someone else’s house is a big deal for any child and the experience may become overwhelming. The school holidays are the perfect time to take the plunge and the summer holidays are even better as children can play outside and everything feels a bit less formal. Explain house rules at the beginning
It’s easier to outline your main expectations to the kids at the start. Things like bedtimes, devices, how early they can get up. It’s meant to be fun, so make some allowance for chatting after lights out but with a time limit. It’s helpful to show junior guests where the bathroom is and where to find your bedroom in case they need help urgently in the night.
Arrange an early collection
Be clear with parents on the time your young guest(s) should be picked up in the morning. If it’s their child’s first time staying with you, it’s better if it’s sooner rather than
later to avoid having a tired and grumpy child hanging about with your tired and grumpy child the following day. Plan ahead with beds and bedding
Minimise negotiations by agreeing sleeping arrangements well before bedtime. Aside from the obvious point of checking the kids all have the relevant sheets, sleeping bags and pillows, it’s worth policing the layout. Without supervision, groups of girls are fond of laying out mattresses in a pecking order with the coolest nabbing the best spots. Equally, some more sensitive children will prefer a quiet corner where they can get to sleep easily or to be nearer a nightlight.
Prepare some activities
A sleepover can feel like a very long playdate and while it’s great for helping raise your child’s friendships to the next level, having at least three planned activities can smooth out any initial awkwardness or boring bits. I like to have a few suggestions up my sleeve, including one physical activity and at least one more sedentary activity for calming everyone down, such as a favourite card game, craft or Lego. If you talk to your child about what they might like to do a week before, you can make sure you have any materials needed.
Ask the parents about food
While the children will have planned their midnight feast down to every last Haribo, you can probably assume they haven’t given much thought to actual meals. Most kids will find it reassuring to know there will be something familiar at breakfast time so checking ahead with the other parents on allergies and breakfast habits is a considerate touch.
