How to choose the right school

Finding the right school for your child can feel daunting as you may be faced with a host of unfamiliar processes and information. Tushi Gorasia, Headteacher at Hendon Prep, an independent school in North London, has some advice to get you started.

When it comes to choosing the first school for your child, there are lots of things to think about, and depending on where you live, it may feel like you have quite a few schools to choose from or very few options. Whether you are considering a state primary school or an independent prep school, there are some basic considerations to take into account.

Firstly, location: is the school within walking distance, or how busy is the route and what is the parking situation? If it’s a state school, you will need to ensure that you live in the catchment area by checking your local authority’s website.

Look at the size of the school, the individual class sizes, and the school’s values Not all schools suit all children. You know your child better than anyone so consider

the kind of environment your child will be happy in, as a happy child is a learning child. For working parents, before and after school care may be essential and wraparound care can differ widely.

To gain some insight into school life check the schools’ websites and social media to see what type of content they post and review their independent inspection reports, which may provide valuable insights into the quality of provision

Once you have your shortlist of schools, visit them, and if possible, see the school in action. This is the very best way to see what a school has to offer your child. Finally, make sure you are aware of all application deadlines and processes.

If you are considering an independent school for your child, we would love to welcome you to Hendon Prep so that you can see for yourself why the Independent Schools Inspectorate recently awarded us

Children are at core for Hillgate Tutors

As our children go back to school, it can be daunting for parents to navigate the next level of education.

“Highgate Tutors are here to support you and your child on their learning journey,” said founder Laurie Gabay. Hillgate Tutors’ students have been achieving the highest grades at some of Britain’s most prestigious schools such as Winchester, Westminster, Latymer and UCS, added Laurie. The secret to their success? “A deep understanding of each student’s individual needs,” said Laurie. “We put pupils at the core. We look for tutors who are highly qualified and passionate educators who will suit the pupil.” Many tutors have been with Hillgate Tutors for 15 years or longer.

Offering support at all levels, from age five to university, Hillgate Tutors works with parents to develop a learning plan tailored to each child to help them achieve their best. Tutoring can take place at your home or via online learning.

“Parents are in good, professional hands with us,” said Laurie. “We pride ourselves on providing the best for their children.”

What's For Dinner: In One Pot

Family mealtimes - the stakes are high

The benefits of families eating together around the table stretch way beyond getting children to eat their greens.

Research shows that children and teenagers who share home-cooked meals are protected against substance use, violent behaviour, depression and suicidal thoughts and so are better equipped to handle bullying, bereavement and other life-related traumas.*

But achieving this “hallelujah mealtime” is not always easy. A recent Sainsbury’s report found more than half of people say they are too short of time or have conflicting schedules, and a third say fussy eating or dietary requirements get in the way. No wonder that a quarter of families sit down to eat together only once a week, and at least three-quarters of people say they are partly reliant on convenience food.

Home chef and mum of twins Sarah Rossi has followed up her Sunday Times bestselling debut cookbook What’s For Dinner with a book aimed at tackling those difficulties –What’s For Dinner: In One Pot, from Harper Collins. In One Pot's nutritious, crowd-pleasing recipes can be cooked and prepared in limited time, are suitable for a variety of dietary requirements, are 100 per cent feasible regardless of skill, equipment, or budget and come paired with digestible guides around best kitchen practice, batch cooking, utensils, nutrition and helpful lists for a stocked store cupboard and an economic weekly shop.

JOY STRUCTURE SPACE

Your child’s primary years are fundamental in shaping not just what they become, but who they become.

King Alfred School has over 120 years of experience of designing joyful learning experiences which give each child the space they need to discover and develop their passions, to embrace challenge and reflect on their achievements. Our creative curriculum inspires children because they do it through

experience, through play, through genuine interest; we nurture an eagerness to know more and encourage greater depth of understanding.

We have high expectations for our children and give them the freedom to explore and grow - all within a structure which lets them develop at the pace which is right for them. The results speak for themselves; happy, confident children who love to learn.

Why listening leads to learning

As the Head of The King Alfred School's Lower School, with children from Reception to Year 6, it’s my job to ensure there are clear structures which allow students to have their voices heard. One way we do this is by rethinking traditional parent-teacher progress meetings. Traditionally in these meetings, the grown-ups talk about a child’s progress and attitude to learning. Vital conversations take place without the most important person present We do things differently. Each term students invite their parents in and, along with their teacher, they show their work, talk about their progress and measure it against goals they themselves have set. They’re asked to reflect on their learning behaviours, celebrate successes and talk about how they can improve going forward. The children are expected to have an opinion about their own learning, to take responsibility for it and work as part of a team with their teacher and their significant adults to improve it.

We routinely see how children feeling heard as part of these learning conversations, and the ownership they feel of their experience, leads to a positive classroom environment for everyone.

When does your child need extra academic help?

Do you take a reactive or proactive approach to supporting your child academically?

Some parents only seek extra tuition support once they realise their child is struggling or lagging behind at school. Ant Learning, a private tuition provider in Southgate, reveals that many parents who seek support don't wait for that moment, preferring instead to take ownership of supporting their child's education. Some parents report:

✎ “My child describes school work as ‘too easy’”

✎ “I want my child to stay ahead of her school work”

✎ “My child is lacking confidence and we want to build his confidence”

✎ “The 11+ exams are coming up soon, and I want my child to pass the tests”

✎ “My child started reception during the pandemic and we’ve noticed some learning gaps”

If any of these resonates with you, why not give Ant Learning a call. The results speak for themselves. One parent said of her son: “When he started, he became so fluent at reading, blending, phonics, sounding out words… he got so interested in reading… it made learning fun.”

Doors open at new Laurel Park School

As a new secondary school opens its doors, headteacher Adele Christofi sets out why Laurel Park School should be the school of choice for families in Palmers Green and Southgate.

“We are a school that has classrooms full of happy and polite young people ready to work hard and aim high,” she said. “The ethos of our new school is grounded in our core values of integrity, excellence, determination and ambition, which permeate through everything we do.”

"We have a new curriculum, high expectations of behaviour and approaches to quality first teaching."

Adele explained how each young person is valued for their uniqueness and individual talent. “We acknowledge the needs of all our students,” said Adele, “and will strive not only for academic success but to ensure that we develop the whole child, in order to prepare them for 21st century life.”

Ranked fourth for reading

Primary school children in England have ranked fourth in the international rankings for reading.

The latest results in the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study – Pirls – saw England's rank jump from eighth position into the top five. Pirls tests are taken by Year 5 pupils in England, at the end of the school year, every five years. Girls were ahead of boys in nearly all of the ranked countries but the gender gap has narrowed.

Stagecoach pupils blossom on and off stage

“Through teaching the performing arts, our aim is to enable children to build key life skills, such as communication and creativity, and develop the self-confidence to express themselves,” said Odette Garvey, Principal of Stagecoach Highgate.

Odette and her experienced team hold term-time Saturday classes in Highgate.

“Everyone is welcomed into our “family”. No performing experience is necessary and we support one another – that’s why so many children happily stay with us through all the age groups.”

Teaching is divided by age – Early Stages, 4-6 years, and Main Stages, 6-16. “We focus on many styles of dance, acting and singing. Everyone is allowed to develop at their own pace and, most importantly, reassured that it’s fine to make mistakes.

"While some students come to nurture a strong talent, for most it’s because they want to learn, have fun and make friends in an inspiring environment. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student who has been shy and quiet suddenly stand up and speak – that’s just wonderful!”

New term starts Sept 16. Childcare vouchers accepted.

Gut bacteria predict obesity

Scientists can determine whether a child will go on to develop obesity by analysing their gut bacteria during their early years, a new study at the Université Sorbonne Paris suggests. Lead author Gaël Toubon said: ‘The reasons these gut bacteria affect weight is because they regulate how much fat we absorb. Our findings reveal how an imbalance in distinct bacterial groups may play an important role in the development of obesity.’
