Would you rent clothes for your baby?

The Big Garden Birdwatch The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch takes place from 25 to 27 January and is the largest wildlife survey in the world. The information collected helps monitor bird species in the UK, and is great fun for children. To take part, you need to watch the birds in your garden or local park for just one hour at some point over the three days and report your results to the RSPB.

You can request a FREE Big Garden Birdwatch pack from the RSPB which includes a bird identification chart and advice to help you attract wildlife to your garden. To make it fun, challenge your children to see who can spot the most birds. Take a bike ride to a local park to look for birds, or make a day trip out of it and spot birds in a new place. Take pictures of your discoveries and share them with us on using #FNLBirdwatch.

Babies can get through an alarming number of outfits in a day, so there’s no getting away from the fact that you will need plenty of sleepsuits in different sizes, each of which will only fit for a matter of months or weeks. So how to you avoid ending up with piles of clothes your baby has outgrown?

For more and more new parents, the answer is simple: RENT.

Gender Reveal Parties Becoming Popular The American trend of gender reveal parties to announce the sex of a baby is becoming increasingly popular here in the UK. Celebrated at an earlier stage in pregnancy than a baby shower, a gender reveal party announces whether expectant parents will be giving birth to a boy or a girl. Sometimes this will be a surprise for the couple themselves, with some asking the

sonographer at their 20 week scan to write “boy” or “girl” on a piece of paper and to put it in an envelope. It is then given to a friend or relative who organises the party. Traditional ‘reveals’ include a cake with blue or pink sweets hidden inside, a pink or blue confetti-filled piñata or a guest taking off a hat to reveal a pink or blue wig. But more dramatic announcements, including fireworks are becoming more and more common.

Two UK companies have introduced an alternative which they believe solves this problem as well as being affordable and environmentally sustainable by reducing waste. The alternative also reduces time spent by parents constantly re-selling and purchasing clothes. Families pay a monthly subscription, return outgrown clothes and then receive the next size up, in line with their baby’s growth and the changing seasons. Clothes are professionally cleaned and must pass quality control before being sent to the next renting family. For more info, visit bundlee.co.uk or www.bellesandbabes.co.uk

Researchers at the Birkbeck Babylab expand studies to include school age children! At the Birkbeck Babylab, we don’t just study babies! Our team of friendly researchers create fun and interesting studies to learn how brains in babies, toddlers and children develop. We use cutting edge technology and a variety of methods to achieve this. Our studies appeal to both babies and children through play, games and computer animations. Lisanne and Aude, two of our wonderful PhD students, are currently studying 2 – 6 year olds. Lisanne uses motion capture cameras and Duplo toy blocks to learn how the ability to remember instructions and create things in the correct order to achieve a goal develops throughout childhood. The technical psychology term for this is action sequencing and is essential to daily life. For example, learning how to get dressed independently requires remembering the order of underwear before trousers and socks before shoes! Aude is also interested in action sequencing and uses a game on a touch screen computer where children build recipes for their favourite cartoon characters. The way the children plan, hesitate or change their Calling all Baby Scientists! minds while playing will provide insight into how action sequences develop and improve throughout Help us discover how babies & kids learn! childhood. JUMP IN trampoline park in Enfield runs Rebound Therapy classes aimed at children and adults with autism or heightened sensory needs.

We all want the best start in life for our children, but have you thought about the best start you can give to the health of their teeth? At Origin Orthodontics, we can help you establish an effective oral hygiene routine that will ensure your children can look forward to straight, healthy teeth in the future. We are a private orthodontic practice located in Southgate, North London and Central London, providing orthodontic care for over 20 years. As specialist orthodontists, our concern is to straighten our patients’ teeth whilst ensuring correct alignment of the jaw without overcrowding. At Origin Orthodontics we offer a range of adult orthodontic treatment types also, including Invisalign and Incognito lingual braces, as well as the conventional fixed braces. Our aim is to make it as easy as possible for you to achieve a beautiful smile, and that orthodontic treatment should fit in with your hectic lifestyle. Adult and Teen Invisalign treatment is made easy with dental monitoring, a smartphone app which enables you to send us selfies of your teeth so we can track the progress of your treatment, reducing the number of clinic check-ups, which means fewer appointments in your already busy diary! More info: www.cleanairday.org.uk and www.blf.org.uk

The trampoline therapy forms part of inclusive relaxed sessions where those with special needs are encouraged to explore unassisted play with their families and carers in a safe, lower sensory environment. Trampolines are key to this specific type of exercise therapy which benefits those across virtually the whole spectrum of disabilities. It has been proven to provide a huge number of potential therapeutic and physiological benefits, from cardio-respiratory, muscle tone and balance and posture through to perception and communication. Benefits that are more specific to autism include: improvements in calmness, focus, concentration, eye contact, memory, following instructions, motivation, self-esteem, confidence, potential for learning across the curriculum, and happiness. Other benefits are: reduction in tactile defensiveness, anxiety, agitation, shimming, rocking, self-harming, hitting, and anti-social behaviours. Jump In Rebound Therapy-qualified instructors are on hand to work either one to one or in groups after a full assessment of needs is carried out. The Regional Manager for Jump In Enfield, said: “Trampolines at our parks offer great physio benefits for those with low muscle tone who need to maintain/build their core strength. This is because trampolines encourage the participant to constantly correct their balance when jumping and landing, this also helps with co-ordination which has been linked to learning and neurological development. Bouncing on the trampoline can be very a very stimulating piece of play equipment for these individuals.” Paul Kaye, CEO of ReboundTherapy.org (international body and training course provider for Rebound Therapy) said: “I am delighted to see so many trampoline parks introducing Rebound Therapy into their programme.” To find out more or book an assessment for the Rebound Therapy-specific session, with a qualified Jump In Level 2 Rebound Therapy practitioner send an email to Enfield.Management@gojumpin.com and an expert will be in touch with more information. familiesonline.co.uk

WINTER FUN Find these winter words in the grid. Then read the remaining unused letters on the bottom three lines from left to right to find a secret message!

National Storytelling Week National Storytelling Week takes place from 1 to 8 February and is a chance to reflect on one of the oldest art forms in the world. We are all immersed in stories — from conversations

during which we re-tell events in our lives, to watching our favourite television shows.

Speech and language therapists believe that storytelling is vital for children’s academic success as it promotes narrative skills and strengthens the ability of children to correctly sequence ideas. To be a good reader and writer a child needs firstly to be a good speaker and listener. Above all though, storytelling is fun. Whether we are listening to someone else’s story or telling our own, inventing and adapting narratives can open doors to exciting new worlds — both real and imaginary. National Storytelling Week takes place in storytelling clubs, theatres, museums, schools, hospitals, spoken word venues, and care homes. To find a local event or to look through its extensive archive, visit www.sfs.org.uk

LYONSDOWN SCHOOL

NEW BARNET It’s been an incredibly busy time for Lyonsdown’s littlest pupils, those aged 3 to 4 years old, in the School’s Pre-Reception class. They have been enjoying exploring and experimenting; developing their skills and confidence both inside and outside of the classroom. From practising their phonics, to learning Spanish and French. As well as Music-making, Art activities and plenty of PE! They’ve particularly enjoyed choosing books in the School’s newly opened ‘Emmeline Pankhurst Library’, stocked with an array of books to encourage a real love of reading. Pupils have also benefited from Lyonsdown’s newly opened Dining Hall, Science Lab and Year 4 classroom. These impressive new facilities are all part of a new and exciting chapter in Lyonsdown’s 110-year history, which sees the School fully embrace all girls’ education. Year 4 girls are enjoying their new classroom, as they begin to prepare for their entrance to secondary schools. Lyonsdown has an exceptional record of girls being offered places at selective and maintained secondary schools – the preparation for which begins in earnest in Years 4 and 5 before entrance examinations in Year 6. However, the School is resolutely focused on offering a brilliantly broad and balanced curriculum so that girls can thrive both personally and academically. To find out more, visit one of the Lyonsdown’s Open Mornings on 6th February and 12th March at 10am. Or join in with one of their ‘Stay and Play’ sessions, for girls aged 1-3, on Tuesday 4th February.

Mars Montessori Mars Montessori and Les Trois Oursons Bilingual Nurseries have added another string to their bow, by offering an Introduction to Mandarin. Philippe Fraser, director, explains: “Children attending our nursery have benefitted from an English-French bilingual environment for many years with great success. We were confident enough in our approach to trial an additional Mandarin program – and were amazed by the results.” He continues “As always, our Montessoriled ethos is to let the children express their preferences and interests as the basis for our planning. In keeping with this ethos, we would never oblige a child to take part in a Mandarin activity. We simply let the children explore at their pace. Children, especially at this age group, do best when they are given freedom and support – and let their natural curiosity drive them further.” The early years are the ideal age to acquire

new languages but also for the brain to tune our ears to differentiate different types of sounds. This specialisation means that if a young child never hears certain tones, for example, then it becomes very difficult to recognise them later in life. This, Fraser says, is crucial for tonal languages like Mandarin: “We really believe children should be exposed to different languages and cultures when they are young. Tonal languages are especially beneficial to be exposed to at a young age, as without exposure to the tones when young, it becomes substantially harder when we are older to learn to differentiate them.” The children also love the activities. As well as songs, they have really enjoyed creating models and artwork for the Chinese New Year and other festivals. Mars Montessori is rated Outstanding by Ofsted and is Montessori Accredited. Les Trois Oursons is rated Good with Outstanding features by Ofsted and is Montessori Accredited.

The Growth of Educational Mapping Educational Mapping – a term increasingly used amongst London parents facing fierce competition for limited school places for children. Navigating the maze of options arguably starts for some before their child is actually born with oversubscribed nursery schools requiring registration from birth.

Many parents recognise the process of ‘mapping out’ a child’s educational journey allows an ‘optimal’ pathway to achieve best school placements... Early nursery choice ensures a child is both happy and motivated to confront early admission challenges at Reception age, thus gaining entry into increasingly ‘selective’ Prep schools. Likewise, careful plotting of ‘best’ Prep schools provides parents with the reassurance that children will be prepared and equipped with skills to succeed in competitive admissions that characterise oversubscribed Senior schools. Identifying and plotting key schools on a child’s www.yellowbirdeducation.com

8

Families North London

bespoke map is important but increasingly, careful mapping extends to the pathways or routes between each flag on the larger map. Yellowbird Education recognise that whilst good schools are preparing and getting pupils ready for examinations, parents are increasingly looking to supplement school education to ensure the next destination on their child’s map is actually reached. Detailed scheduling extends into long school holidays with education workshops, exam preparation and tuition all aimed at preparing children to reach the next stage. The Yellowbird Team further supports families by mapping which schools are available for their child, when best to attend oversubscribed open days and understanding admission processes for individual schools. Undoubtedly educational mapping is time consuming, but if done well, it is a valuable investment to ensure a successful journey for your child. Yellowbird Education – Holiday Workshops

The secondary transition If your child is aged 9 or over it is likely that you are already starting to think about the next steps in their education and moving from primary school to the right secondary school for them. Here are a few tips to keep in mind once your child has started secondary school…

Listen out for concerns.. Some children take this huge change in their stride and are ready to move on, while others will feel anxious. Common concerns include getting lost around a much larger school, dealing with the journey, making new friends and managing the homework load.

Be aware of increased homework load.. At primary, pupils might only have had a small amount of homework; expect the game to be raised now. Not only will there be more but keeping on top of when it all needs handing in can be complicated. At Broomfield the increase is supported through a gradual process of transition so that pupils are able to comfortably cope and gain the full benefits of good homework.

Expect them to be tired and emotional… Many year sevens get very tired thanks to the ‘newness’, on top of a longer day and a more complicated journey. Stick to early nights and restful weekends to fend off exhaustion – and the moodiness that goes with this. Get used to knowing much less about what goes on In primary, you might well have been at the school gates most days and familiar with your child’s friends, parents and teachers. This will change: with independent travel comes a more hands-off approach. At Broomfield Secondary School staff are very aware of these concerns and the School works with pupils, parents and primary schools to ensure that new pupils joining do so with confidence and quickly settle into their new environment. Broomfield is a small, family school which means it is easy for pupils to get to know the school and for the school to get to know them. Broomfield recognises that every family is looking for specific things when it comes to choosing a secondary school. Come along to their Open Mornings to find out more. Perform is celebrating its 20th anniversary! Families chatted to founder, Lucy Quick. How did Perform start?

What are you proudest of?

What does the future hold?

I was a musical theatre actress in Oliver! at the London Palladium and I loved working with children. I had a vision for a drama school that wasn’t about talent or auditions; where performing arts would be used to develop what we now call the 4 Cs: confidence, communication, coordination and concentration.

My teachers. They are the most inspirational bunch of talented and enthusiastic people you’ll ever meet.

Opening more Perform schools across the country – we’re just launching in Nottingham - and continuing our confidence crusade to help children fulfil their potential through drama, dance and singing.

What’s the secret of Perform’s success? We put child development at the heart of everything we do.

Visit www.perform.org.uk/try to book.
