Why we should all walk to school Beat the traffic and get you and your kids out in the fresh air during International Walk to School Month this October. Each year, primary school children from across the UK join forces with over 40 countries worldwide to celebrate the benefits of walking to school and this October is no different, with the month-long activity encouraging pupils to walk to school at
least once a week. Many parents know that walking is actually quicker and less stressful than taking the car and they value the opportunity to spend quality time with their children. It also increases air quality with fewer cars on the streets and strengthen communities, where children and parents are seen in the streets! Stop moaning about the traffic … start clearing it! www.livingstreets.org.uk

PUDDLE DUCKS IS COMING TO SUFFOLK Babies and toddlers across Suffolk will soon be learning unique swimming and lifesaving skills, thanks to the baby and pre-school swim-school, Puddle Ducks, which is arriving in Suffolk in October. Children can have lessons from a few days to 4 years old and have fun while they learn to swim in a safe, encouraging environment. Franchisee, Claire says “I believe that swimming is a skill that all children should be taught from an early age. It’s fun, helps them interact with other children and encourages them to lead a healthy life style. 1 in 3 children leave primary school unable to swim and 1 in 6 parents never take their child swimming , and we’re on a mission to change that, starting right here in Suffolk!”
Puddle Ducks is a national company which was founded in 2001. Quality of teaching has been the business’ number one priority. The teaching programme is constantly evolving, from the music that we sing in the pool, to the techniques we teach. Puddle Ducks classes are based on age, not ability, so children are learning amongst their peers. The first lessons will start at Seckford Hall in For details visit Woodbridge, Birch Farm in Hintlesham and a www.puddleducks.com/suffolk private pool in Levington. parents to have the stage of the class changed rather than the time. Due to the length of the terms some children may complete stages part way through a term this could easily be discussed and your child could move and receive a certificate part way through the term if needed so ensuring continuous development based on individual children’s needs. Certificates, badges and stickers will be issued once a stage is completed if children do not complete a stage at the end of the term an achievement certificate will be issued to help to motivate the children. In light that this is something new and unique Birch Farm will be sending questionnaires to parents seeking their views of this arrangement. Term starts on Monday 2nd September.
Birch Farm are developing a unique format to swimming lessons to help develop a service to fit in with the needs of busy families. Their swimming year will be split into 3 terms, Autumn, Spring and Summer with a 2 week break at Christmas, 1 week at Easter and a further 2 week break in the summer. This unique term structure ensures that children will have continuous development but also have the chance to enjoy a break. Birch Farm will also be offering a 10% sibling discount off the eldest child if you have more than 1 child attending lessons. Class times and stages will be reviewed by staff on a regular basis and if all children are completing a stage at the same time it may be easier for the

Looking for a fun half term activity?
Then look no further than Ormiston’s Children’s Marathon. With the summer holidays done and dusted, most parents across Suffolk will be breathing a heavy sigh of relief after managing to keep their children entertained for six long weeks. But here’s a startling fact – it’s just seven weeks to go until October half term. That’s less than two months. What else is there to possibly do to keep the kids entertained, especially with the weather turning cooler and the chance of rain becoming increasingly likely?
That’s where local children’s charity Ormiston Children & Families Trust comes in. This October half term, Ormiston is launching a brand new fundraising event that will not only help to raise money for the organisation, but will also help keep the kids entertained and active during the holidays. Taking place on Monday 28th October at Trinity Park in Ipswich, Ormiston’s ‘Children’s Marathon’ is a 2.6 mile race which is open to children aged 0-16 and to those of all abilities – participants can either run, walk, toddle or be pushed around the route in their buggies. The idea came from Kate Alden, Ormiston’s Community Fundraiser in Suffolk, who earlier this year took part in the London Marathon for the first time. It was while she was training that the concept of the Children’s Marathon came to her. She explained: “My seven-year-old son, James, asked if he could come with me on a training run one night. I agreed, thinking that after a quick run around the block he would have run out of steam or would be put off by the cold weather. I couldn’t have been more wrong! We got home after running, jogging and walking around where we live, and I was really surprised to see that he’d managed a distance of 1.9 miles! “After that he came with me on several occasions and was very excited, assuming that because we were training together he was also going to be able to take part in the Marathon and he would get to meet Mo Farah ‘from the Olympics’. I had to explain that wasn’t the case but said I would look for another event for him to take part in, and that’s where it all stemmed from.” To keep the Children’s Marathon as close to the real thing as possible, Ormiston has reduced the 26.2 miles distance of the London Marathon to 2.6 miles – fairly short but something that will still be challenging. There will be a defined route with a proper Start/Finish line with a timing clock, and each participant will receive a medal when they cross the line. The London Marathon is the largest annual fundraising event on the planet, with tens of thousands of people running to raise money for good causes. This is a theme Ormiston would like to reflect with its Children’s Marathon. Registration is just £5 per person and the charity is hoping children will be able to raise some sponsorship too. As an incentive, every race-goer that manages to raise more than £26.20 will receive a special reward. The Children’s Marathon will be split into three stages for different age groups – a 10am start for secondary school students (Keystage 3), a 12 noon start for primary school students (Keystages 1 and 2) with pre-schoolers starting at 2pm. Something that Ormiston is keen to stress is that the event is not purely for elite athletes – children of all abilities are welcome to take part.
“
Kate explained:
Some experienced runners may use the Children’s Marathon as a time trial, but there could also be children who will gain a massive sense of achievement by walking 2.6 miles, or from a sibling enjoying the event with their younger brother or sister who’s being pushed round in a pushchair.
”
For families that have children who will be taking part in the different races, there will be plenty to do at Trinity Park on the day. Families are welcome to bring along packed lunches or a picnic although there will be food and drink available to buy on the day. There will also be lots of stalls and other activities going on to keep children entertained throughout the day. The event is being supported by LiveWell Suffolk, who will be organising warm-ups at the start of each race.
All money raised from the Children’s Marathon will go towards supporting Ormiston’s vital projects in the area. In Suffolk, the charity runs a children’s centre in Ipswich and works in HMP Highpoint, near Haverhill, to support children and families who have a relative in prison. Other projects in the county include Polish Outreach, which researches and responds to the needs of the Polish community in Ipswich; the Ormiston Domestic Abuse Service, which offers support to women on a one-to-one basis and Mpower, which gives intensive support to women who have had a child, or children, removed from their care. The charity also runs the Newmarket Family Support Project, where it works in schools and colleges in the town to raise aspirations and reduce behavioural and social issues. The charity is one of the leading children’s charities in East Anglia, with more than 40 services spread across six counties.

Favourite park and why? There are lots of little parks in Kesgrave which we visit on a regular basis. Favourite children’s club/class? My daughter loves swimming but I think the best thing for both my children has been the Kumon classes – for my son who is bright – it is way of keeping him challenged and for my daughter who has special needs, it has helped bring her into the national level for maths. Favourite day out and why? We are very lucky to live near the coast & a day out to the beach in summer is always fun. Favourite child friendly restaurant and why? We love the farmhouse Pub in Kesgrave which is right in the centre of Grange Farm & has a lovely park next to it.

Our Community
sponsored by
Ipswich Building Society
In this issue the Our Community page highlights Suffolk Libraries, a local resource we have access to that not only could assist with our childrens school work, but which offers fun family activities all year round, plus we hear from Suffolk County Council highlighting the need locally for foster families.
Your local library can help your child develop a love of reading and benefit their education. National statistics show that regular visits to libraries make a notable difference to children’s literacy skills and educational prospects. A child who visits the library every month from age three to five is two and a half months ahead of a five year old who did not visit the library as often. By early August there were already over 6,000 Suffolk children signed up to take part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge – a major national campaign to keep children reading and engaged with their library over the summer holidays.
Suffolk’s libraries offer a wide range of activities for young children and families throughout the week across 44 libraries. Nearly 800 children attend activities in libraries every week which include: • Babybounce: soothing songs and gentle nursery rhymes for babies
The Bookstart charity funds two free packs of books. The first of these parents should receive from their health visitor for their baby and the second through their nursery or pre-school after they turn three. If you haven’t received these you can ask at your local library or children’s centre or call 01473 584563. Bookstart also fund some dual language books. There are also some baby and toddler packs for children with severe sensory impairments.
• Tot Rock: songs and action rhymes for toddlers • Storytime: stories and rhymes for pre-school children.
Of course you don’t have to physically go into a library to use the service. You can search for children’s books, including eBooks, using the online catalogue and reserve them for collection. If you live in rural Suffolk you can also access children’s books from the mobile library service. The Suffolk Libraries website also provides suggested books for teenage readers and information about mood boosting books to help children through new experiences and feelings, such as starting school, going on holiday or having a new baby in the family.
These sessions help to familiarise children with the library and provide lots of practice in phonic discrimination, rhythm and the pleasure of sharing books.
Children can join their local library for free at any age. You can find out the details of your nearest library at www.suffolklibraries.co.uk or by calling 01473 584563. The website also contains the details of all regular activity sessions for young children.
There has been a focus on ensuring the sessions engage with young boys by providing resources like construction toys and encouraging their participation with action rhymes that involve musical instruments, marching and counting.
Suffolk Libraries also run the Schools Library Service which provides advice and resources to help schools get the most from their libraries.
For the parents and grandparents who bring them along, our libraries provide a safe place to share books with their children, make new friendships and avoid social isolation.
Every child deserves a family Suffolk County Council’s Fostering service are appealing for more people in Suffolk to consider fostering to give the chance for all children in our county to grow up knowing what it is like to be part of a family. Suffolk’s Fostering Service are particularly appealing to people that may be able to offer a child a more long term home, through permanent fostering. When most people think about caring for a child on a permanent arrangement they think of adoption, but for many children permanent fostering may be the best option. The prospect of them being adopted significantly reduces the older they get, or the greater their care needs are, but also many will need a new family to grow up with who can support them to remain in touch with their birth parents, and help them feel they belong to both families. For many children that are permanently fostered their affiliation with their carers does not end once the child reaches 18, the relationship continues and they can remain a part of the family for life. Sue Lowndes, Head of Fostering at Suffolk County Council comments ‘We would really like to hear from anyone that has ever thought about sharing their home with some of our county’s most vulnerable children. Through permanent fostering, we can offer ongoing support to both the carers and the children, ensuring the child is given every opportunity to reach their full potential in a family environment that offers stability, love, support and positive role models’. If you would like to find out more about fostering a Suffolk child or speak to someone about permanent fostering, contact the Suffolk Fostering Service today on 0800 328 2148 or visit www.suffolkfostering.com
Quotes from parents:
“ Baby Bounce is the highlight of my week, I don’t feel so alone and the other mums are so supportive.” “The library is such a welcoming place to visit these days.”

Maternity Reflexology by Caroline Lisle
Many people know that reflexology is a non - intrusive complementary health therapy based on the theory that different points on the feet correspond with different parts of the body. The theory is that reflexology helps the body to restore its balance naturally. Usually after a treatment you might feel more relaxed. You might also notice that you are sleeping better, with your mood and sense of wellbeing improving. Fewer people know that there are specialised maternity or pregnancy reflexology techniques tailored specifically to care for the mind, body and spirit of mother and baby. This can start as early as preconception and continue through pregnancy, labour and the post-natal period. For those planning a pregnancy, reflexology can play a part in getting your body in the best possible shape to cope with the changes to come. Some couples find it easier to conceive than others and for those who feel it is taking longer than it should it can be an anxious time. Reflexology can be used to help support them on their fertility journey. Many couples have found it helpful to receive reflexology treatments when dealing with the stress and anxiety that accompany assisted conception methods. Pregnancy can be a wonderful experience but an expectant mother undergoes huge changes physically and emotionally. Reflexology can be used if you are suffering from the common discomforts of pregnancy such as:
• Morning sickness • Fatigue and lack of sleep • Anxiety • Constipation
• Heartburn • Backache and hip pain • Fluid retention - swollen puffy ankles and legs
Allowing yourself the time for regular reflexology treatments during pregnancy may even result in an easier labour. In a small research study undertaken by obstetrician Dr Gowri Motha presented in 1994, first time mothers who received 10 reflexology treatments prior to delivery had average labour times of 5 to 6 hours. Once the baby has arrived there are new issues to deal with and reflexology is a gentle and natural way to help you through the physical and emotional changes. Dads also benefit from a treatment during this sometimes stressful period of adjusting to life with a new baby.

“ “
This is what a couple of Caroline’s clients have said about their maternity reflexology experiences.
I went to see Caroline when I was pregnant with a view to getting my body in good shape for the birth and prevent any complications that I had experienced with my first birth. I thoroughly enjoyed my sessions and looked forward to them each time. I felt relaxed and calm all the way through and think that the reflexology really helped with my wellbeing in the run up to having my baby. Caroline was always interested in how I had been and anything specific that I wished her to focus on for the session. I have to say that having my baby this time round was a much better experience thankfully, and I am sure that Caroline had a big part to play in that”. Anna Barton, Kesgrave
When you are pregnant all your senses are heightened and you are more aware of your body so when you experience a treatment such as reflexology you can really feel the benefit to you and your unborn child. These sessions taught me how to relax in a way that was re-energising for both myself and my unborn child. If I have another child, I will definitely be having maternity reflexology with Caroline to help me through the pregnancy”
Tanya Ruffles, Felixstowe
When choosing a maternity reflexologist it is best to go to someone with the appropriate qualifications. Caroline trained with the Maternity Reflexology Consortium and holds a Certificate of Competency in Maternity Reflexology. The course was compiled by Suzanne Enzer who is known as “the mother of Maternity reflexology”. She and Jenni Grant are the only authorised tutors of this work in the UK currently. Caroline is a member of The Association of Reflexologists and is registered for reflexology with The Complementary and Natural Health Care Council. If you would like any further information about the benefits of maternity reflexology she can be contacted on 01394 420558 or alternatively have a look at her website www.carolinelisletherapies.co.uk

Education News Ipswich High School welcomes New Head
In September 2013, Ipswich High School for Girls will enter a new and dynamic phase as Ms Oona Carlin takes up the mantle as the new Head of Suffolk’s leading independent school. Oona Carlin will join Ipswich High from her position as Deputy Head Academic at the GDST’s Putney High School, where she has been a key member of the senior leadership team for six years. Prior to Putney High, she was Head of Chemistry at The Royal Masonic School. Ms Carlin studied biochemistry at Imperial College and has taught in a number of schools, including two years at The English School in Bogota, Colombia. For the past twelve years she has worked in independent girls’ schools. Ms Carlin has played hockey since she was at school where she participated at county level. She still plays hockey regularly, recently captaining Windsor Ladies, and she is looking forward to joining a new team in Ipswich. On being appointed, Ms Carlin said, “I have been extremely impressed by the warmth and sense of purpose among girls and staff at Ipswich High. The magnificent school grounds are home to a school community which is equally remarkable. I am thrilled to have been given the opportunity to work with pupils, parents, staff and governors to build on the school’s success and I look forward to getting to know them in the months ahead.” Chair of the Governors, Mrs Annie Reid said “We are delighted to have appointed such an accomplished and resourceful Head. Oona has expert knowledge of girls’ education and will be a worthy successor to Elaine Purves. Oona is clearly passionate about joining Ipswich High School and moving to Suffolk. We are certain Ipswich High will continue to go to even greater strengths under her direction.”

Family Matters
Why gamble with your children’s future? As parents, we have a constant list of things to plan and arrange for our children, and as the new school term begins that list continues to grow. During this season of planning, East Anglia based Margary + Miller Solicitors are reminding Families magazine readers of the services available which can serve to alleviate stress and worry and assist in ensuring you have the appropriate legal advice, allowing you to plan for your family and to secure your child’s future.
Margary + Miller’s Family Solicitor, Josephine Hayes comments,
“The autumn is notoriously one of our busiest periods as families re-adjust following the holiday season. Important decisions have to be made and if you have concerns there is no substitute for good legal advice. We can assist families with conveyancing, children disputes, matrimonial issues, wills, probate and personal injury. With any issue concerning your family, it is important to ensure you are getting appropriate legal advice and support. The consequences of inaccurate guidance or representation can be devastating and are easily avoided by seeking timely legal advice.” With four offices across Suffolk, Margary + Miller Solicitors have a specialist, professional team, providing legal advice and support to families throughout the region. Margary + Miller Solicitors has expertise in a full range of legal matters and offers qualified guidance to clients, tailoring their service to the unique needs of each individual.
Where there’s a will… An area of specialisation for the partnership is wills and probate. It is essential for all families, particularly those with young children, to have a valid will that has been appropriately written to ensure parents’ wishes are carried out should the unthinkable happen. As well as dealing with the distribution of your finances, it is important that your will deals with who will care for your children in the event of your death. Although difficult to think about, without an appropriately drafted will, at the very worst, children can end up in care and without the financial security you may have wished to leave them with.
Accidents do happen… Whilst some things in life we can plan for, unfortunately sometimes situations arise which affect us and our families without warning. When an accident happens, it can impact on your family physically, emotionally and financially, adding strains that can have long lasting effects. Most of us accept that accidents do happen, however, many only occur because someone else has failed to take reasonable care. Margary + Miller Solicitors can provide free advice and guidance, assessing whether you or a family member may be entitled to compensation for the pain, suffering and financial losses suffered. At a potentially difficult and stressful time, Margary + Miller can become your professional and skilled ally to help you obtain the accident compensation you deserve whether the claim is for a minor injury through to something more catastrophic.
Decisions, decisions… Another thing that happens during the summer holiday is that parents do actually have time to think and discuss things together (when the kids have gone to bed!), and this can be a time of decisions made regarding the family home; renovations, improvements or ultimately moving. Anyone who’s ever bought and/or sold a property can tell you that it’s not a simple process – not unless you have the right people in place to advise and guide you through important decisions and the process in itself. With the housing market ever-improving and Christmas just around the corner if you can believe it or even bear to think about it, the summer presents the opportunity for decisions to be made, and the autumn term for searching and ultimately making the purchase and the move. Conveyancing is a specialism offered by Margary + Miller Solicitors; used to each and every eventuality you could possibly imagine (or dread) the solicitor is able to manage the entire process for you from start to finish, providing peace of mind during this period of change.
A marriage made in heaven… For parents and guardians planning a wedding, the possibility of relationship breakdown is generally overlooked which can have devastating consequences. If you already have children, are entering into a second marriage or if there is a significant discrepancy in your income or assets, timely legal advice is imperative to ensure that your position is protected. Often people are reluctant to consider entering into prenuptial agreements or cohabitation agreements, but the reality is that they are becoming increasingly popular and are simply a precaution that attempts to ensure the financial security of you, your children, family and loved ones. Margary + Miller recommends that anyone contemplating marriage considers their financial position at the outset and would welcome hearing from people if they have any questions or concerns.
Not always ‘til death do us part… When relationships break down, getting the right advice and understanding your options is crucial. If you have, or are considering separation or divorce, seeking legal advice is the best avenue. Margary + Miller Solicitors can assist with any query, providing accurate, unbiased advice.
“Our team of solicitors are in place to provide legal advice and support to clients regardless of their enquiries. We treat every enquiry with the utmost confidence and provide professional, unbiased advice. We understand that every case is different and offer a bespoke service to every family or person who we work with, ensuring we work together to achieve their goal.”
Josephine concluded,
Margary + Miller are a long established partnership providing professional legal services throughout Suffolk and beyond. With a reputation built on reliability, customer service and flexibility, the firm prides itself on providing quality advice, supported by legal expertise and local knowledge. Offering fixed fee and bespoke services, Margary + Miller Solicitors is confident that all of their services offer clients value for money.

Geraldine McLaughlin For Ipswich teacher Geraldine McLaughlin parkrun has become a real family event with ten of her relations taking part.

Geraldine, who has been running for ten years, was persuaded to take part in the first Ipswich parkrun test event and has gone back regularly since.

The weekly run has become a real social occasion for her family with her husband Ciaran and two sons Eoin, 13, and Cathal, 15, now firm converts. Even her 67-year-old father David Lincoln, a former runner who was forced to quit because of injury, now takes part in parkrun and is improving his time each week. Geraldine says it was difficult for her youngest son Eoin at first and he gradually built up his fitness through walking and running the 5km route each Saturday. Now Eoin has been spreading the word about the event at school and his best friend joins the McLaughlin family every Saturday morning to go toparkrun too.

She said: “Eoin struggled at first but he has stuck with it and really improved. Two weeks ago he ran the whole route without walking which was a fantastic achievement.” One Saturday, ten members of Geraldine’s family took part in the event including her husband and two children, her sister and partner, her niece and nephew, and her cousin and two children. Geraldine, who is a teacher at Kesgrave High School, said: “We had all been together as a family the night before parkrun and I was explaining how much enjoyment we got from it and to my surprise they all decided they would come along the next day and give it a go. What is really great about parkrun is that we go on Saturday and my husband and I run with our sons. One week I will run with our youngest and my husband with our eldest and then we swap over for the next event.
It’s a famil

Parkrun gives us a chance to spend quality time as a family and see our children’s fitness and self esteem improve week on week, as well as our own. Then for the rest of the week we are talking about our times and our personal bests. It really sets you up for the week ahead.”
