Time forTea!! If you have a child’s birthday coming up (or even a grown up one!), why not take some inspiration from one of our great British traditions and throw a proper tea party! Thanks to the Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee, the shops are full of all things Union Jack if you want to go for a British theme, if not here a few ideas for a tea party they will never forget...
Mad Hatter’s Tea Party
Play Lawn Croquet and "pin the grin on the Cheshire Cat". Hit the charity shops and decorate a long table with assorted cups and tea pots. Buy some cheap party Top Hats and get the kids to decorate them with playing cards, painted roses or cut out golden keys. Serve up plates of ‘Eat Me’ biscuits and pots of "drink me’ tea, then have a White Rabbit hopping race.
Posh Teddy bears Picnic
Get them to bring their favourite bear or doll along for a garden tea party and picnic – if you don’t have a garden, lay out a rug on the lounge floor. Invite the children to wear their best frocks and hand out inexpensive pearls when they arrive for them and their dolls. Serve traditional cream tea on a tiered cake stand with cucumber, cream cheese and ham sandwiches don’t forget to cut the crusts off! Ok, so the boys probably won’t be happy sipping tea out of china cups and wearing pearls, but here’s some ideas they will love...
Get down and give me 20!
Get the boys to dress up in their finest Khaki gear and put the tent up in the garden. Serve up flasks of ice tea or juice on a camping table with mini hot dogs and burgers. Give them Army style dog tags then line them up and put them through a gruelling exercise regime of push ups, on the spot running and star jump. Get them balancing on one leg - whoever can do it for the longest gets a prize! Put together an obstacle course.

Serve up Dinosaur/ship shaped biscuits and jugs of Swamp Water or Pirate Grog (made from weak black tea and orange juice). Dedicate an area of soil in the garden or fill a large tub with sand, where the boys can dig for pretend fossils, treasure, worms or other crawly things (use a pack of fake ones if you’re squeamish!) Buy some inexpensive binoculars or telescopes and draw up a list of things they have to spot before tea. Create a treasure map with clues leading them to a chest of coins - hide pretend pearls or gold for them to find on their way. Get them to design their own pirate coins or hats out of cardboard and raise a piece of wood slightly off of the ground on two bricks, blind fold them then make them walk the plank!

As soon as you find out which school your child is going to this September, it’s time to start preparing. Forget force feeding them phonics, this is about getting your child ready for the social challenges of school. The more prepared they are, the easier they will settle and the more they’ll get out of those early days.
:)
r u o y t e g 10 things toto before child used t school they star 1. Can they dress themselves?
Imagine the scene. One teacher faced with thirty children and their coats. By the time each child is zipped up and wrapped up, playtime is over. If your child is able to go some way to helping, they may get some fresh air. If you can see buttons on trousers and skirts becoming a problem during the post PE change, invest in elasticated waistbands. These will also help during any ‘last minute’ toilet visits. Avoid tights in the early days - they can also lead to unnecessary bathroom accidents. With shoes, laces and buckles are a no-no. Stick to Velcro fastenings which your child can do themselves.
2. Are they used to sharing?
Sharing is a difficult lesson for a child to learn, especially if they only start learning it at school. But it’s a vital lesson if you want your child to settle in and make friends easily. No one wants to play with the boy who refuses to take turns and share, and before long that child becomes isolated. Start to make a point of praising your pre-schooler for sharing his bag of figures or his last few sweets.
3. Can they use the toilet on their own?
Reception classrooms usually have a toilet nearby but children are expected to use it on their own. That can mean less confident children avoid a visit until it’s too late. Encourage your child to begin taking toilet trips without you to build up their confidence. Remind them that hand washing is part of the ‘visit’. Beginning school toilet training now will mean less accidents in September.
4. Are they able to eat independently?
Lunchtimes can be a real flashpoint in the early days of your child’s school life. Dinner halls are noisy places and can make a child feel overwhelmed. Make sure they arrive at school able to pick up and use a knife and fork. If they’re opting for a packed lunch, make sure they can open a yoghurt, put a straw in a juice box and unpeel a banana. With school a few months off, it may seem like the easier option to feed them, but it won’t help in the long run. Practice, however painful, makes perfect.
5. Can they recognise their name?
If your child can recognise their name, they’ll be able to find their peg, identify their drawer in the classroom and find their cardigan if it gets misplaced. Starting school can make even the most confident child feel a little lost. If they can locate important places, it will make them feel more in control.
6. Can they use scissors?
Teachers look for this in the early stages of Reception to evaluate dexterity. Get crafty over the next few months.
7. Do they understand discipline?
It’s important your child understands what’s expected of them when they arrive at school. They need to know hitting, kicking, biting and hair pulling will not be tolerated. Not only will it bring your child to the attention of the head teacher for all the wrong reasons, but it will make your child unpopular with their classmates. Reputations earned in the early days of school tend to stick and can be hard to shake off.
PORTSDOWN PRIMARY SCHOOL
NURSERY
8. Can they communicate with an adult?
Giving your child the skills to communicate with their teacher means they will be able to have some control. How else will they ask to go to the toilet? If they don’t understand how to get the attention of an adult, how will they let their teacher know they don’t understand their work? A child who can communicate will get more out of the school day than a child who is unwilling to speak up. Encourage your child to ask and even practice with a raised hand at home to make sure they understand the most appropriate way of getting a grownups attention.
9. Are they able to count?
If your child is able to count up to 20, and count back from 10, this will give them a really good head start. Use some of their favourite toys or foods to make counting fun. Lay out 10 grapes and get them to eat them one by one, counting as they go. It will give them confidence and help them see learning as fun. Plus it’s a great way to get one of their 5 a day down them!
10. Can they follow simple instructions?
The school day is full of instructions. Your child will be asked to put coats on pegs, bring packed lunches into classrooms and sit cross legged on the carpet for circle time. If a child is used to following instructions, they will avoid being reprimanded. The more time a teacher dedicates to repeating instructions and encouraging co-operation, the less time there is for teaching. Start giving your child simple tasks – perhaps helping with the weekly shop or with some straight forward jobs around the house. It will prepare them for school life.

Portsmouth Festivities celebrate Dickens with the classic and the novel As the world commemorates the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’ birth in Portsmouth, his hometown celebrates too with its annual cultural extravaganza, the 2012 Portsmouth Festivities: Great Expectations. Join in at various locations around the city from Friday 22 June to Sunday 1 July as the Festivities look back at the social issues which captivated the author and also fast forward, paying homage to the impending London Olympics. There will be something for all the family with around 80 events ranging from the traditional to the contemporary, some involving Dickens’ direct descendants, famous household names and the out-and-out quirky in an eclectic mix of modern and classical from the worlds of literature, music and the arts. There will be a number of ‘firsts’ in various guises. The Festivities begin with a welcome for
The Boat Project at Gunwharf Quays on Saturday 23 June from 11.45am for a 1pm ceremony when she will be greeted by a massed community choir led by renowned a cappella group VOCES8 (pictured left). This beautifully crafted 30ft yacht is sailing around Britain ahead of the Olympics. She is constructed from wooden items lovingly given by the public, each one with its own tale to tell, making her a travelling archive of poignant stories. There will be a mass ‘warm up for the Olympics’ workout for up to 200 people of all ages and abilities at the Mountbatten Centre with an aerobics-style dance. The Festivities close with an audience with world recording-breaking sailor Dee Caffari, the only woman to sail single handed non-stop around the world in both directions. Afterwards, she will sail The Boat Project out of Gunwharf Quays to end a fabulous 2012 season. Tickets can be purchased over the phone on 023 9282 4355 or online at www.portsmouthfestivities.co.uk where there are more details of the full 2012 programme.
The Government is currently running a consultation on the plain packaging of tobacco products. We know from research that young people in particular are more likely to be attracted by highly designed tobacco packs, than by plain packs. Every year, another 340,000 children in the UK are tempted to try smoking. If introduced, this new legislation could help cigarette packaging look less attractive to children, make the health warnings stand out more and stop young smokers believing that some brands are less harmful than others. Why not add your voice to the consultation? Sign up to support the campaign at: plainpacksprotect.co.uk

Head teacher Martin Castle says,“ Brothers and sisters educated together means that the school builds long-term relationships with parents, to the benefit of pupils and the school.” With small classes throughout children never become just part of the furniture, and teachers really know each pupil. Mayville supports children with their outside activities, encouraging excellence and yet nurturing a team spirit. Children from the Nursery and Kestrels are also part of our school team, and can join us at 2+ where they can grow in a structured caring environment. Why not come and look round our small school and see what our big team has to offer on our Drop-In-Day. The opportunities are endless at Mayville, we would love to share them with you. Open Doors at Portsmouth High School Parents thinking about the next stage of their daughter’s education will be offered a warm welcome at Portsmouth High School. At the schools ‘Open Doors’ event on Wednesday 16th May from 9.00am to 11am there will be an opportunity to tour the school from Nursery to Sixth Form and meet with staff. A Year 5 Taster Day, also on the 16th May, offers the opportunity for girls to take part in lessons and get a real ‘feel’ for the school. Portsmouth High School has been educating girls successfully since 1882 and the school has lost none of the appeal and educational expertise it had when its doors first opened. The Nursery and Junior School are unique in the city being set in large gardens providing an oasis of green space for girls to play in and even come complete with some very popular chickens! The Senior School boasts excellent facilities with a Sport England Standard Sports Hall and refurbished science laboratories. There is also a dedicated Sixth Form Centre with a newly appointed library and study area. A happy, purposeful atmosphere prevails inspiring girls to achieve their very best. This is reflected in the excellent GCSE and A Level results the school achieves year after year. Business Penny Hemsley is the local mother of two and owner of Artypotz Ceramics studio. Tucked away on Castle Road and now in its 4th year of business, Artypotz is one of Southsea’s best kept secrets... Penny with her children, Aaron & Bella in the studio.
FSE: What plans have you got for the future?
FSE: So what is Artypotz all about? Penny: ‘Artypotz is about having fun. Painting pottery is a great way to relax with family & friends, taking time out to be a bit creative. You don’t need to be ‘arty’ to paint a pot. Any age can do it and we’ll give you all the guidance you’ll need. We always have a good selection of pottery to choose from and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Studio fee is £4 per painter plus the cost of your pottery. Items range from £3 - £30. Plus we have a studio full of finished items to give you inspiration!’ FSE: What else do you offer aside from the studio time? Penny: ‘Baby prints are very popular - we have taken footprints from a baby only 5 days old! The paint we use is non-toxic so won’t harm baby in any way. We are always busy with kids’ parties. They choose and paint an item from our party selection and the birthday boy/ girl is given a special gift as a memento of the day. If you have a theme in mind, the chances are we can find pottery to suit. We’ve had Dr Who, Cupcake, Hello Kitty,
Pirate & Princess themes. We also offer a commission service – we’ve done wedding plates, retirement gifts, christening sets etc. Silver fingerprint jewellery is also a new addition to the business and should be up and running soon.’ FSE: It’s not all about the kids is it, you do classes for adults too? Penny: ‘Adults normally come back with friends after visiting with their children! We run a Ladies’ Night twice a month which is very popular. We do open any evening if you have a group of 8 painters – they can bring their own drinks too if they fancy a tipple! People have told me it’s a cheap therapy session! We’ve also got a lot of hen party bookings this year too.’ FSE: What made you decide to start up your own ceramics studio? Penny: ‘My daughter went to a painting party when she was 4 and she loved the bowl she made. While flicking through
Dad’s Corner with Darren Corps
The kids have taken over my phone
I
was suddenly awoken by the words ‘Can I have a go on your iPhone?’ With blurry eyes I looked up to see my phone hovering just above my nose. Reluctantly I typed in the 4 digit passcode. One second later my nine year old son was off - no doubt on a mission to get his personal best on our new App download ‘Angry Birds: Space’. I turned over - trying to get
a craft magazine, I spotted a pottery painting course and decided to enrol, mainly as a hobby for myself. It was only when I started that I realised that the majority of people on the course were opening painting studios. I suddenly thought ‘There’s not one in Southsea – what a lovely job that would be!’ And I was right, it is. I finished the course and within a month, I’d signed my lease. No going back.’ FSE: What is your favourite part of your business? Penny: ‘Making sure people come and have a good time. We want people to collect their items and be proud of what they’ve done. When we have quiet times, it gives me a chance to do some painting for the next season. We change our pottery items often to suit the time of year. So if you’re a regular customer, you’ll always have something new to choose from. I love painting and craft shopping, so this was always going to be the perfect job for me!’
5 minutes more sleep. My eldest is the real reason that I activated the passcode feature: a two-fold attempt to restrict his Smartphone screen time and give me a fighting chance of access to my own phone. My partner is not so daft – her Smartphone has no Apps. She’s not going down that road. Like her, most parents worry about the amount of children’s screen time. And of course once children are playing games on your phone they no longer hear or see you – you become invisible.
Penny: ‘We’d like to get more involved with schools – it would be great if we could offer them something creative to fit in with their curriculum. At the moment we’re keeping an eye out for bigger premises, still in Southsea hopefully. We want to expand on our craft activities that we offer and for that we need a bit more space.’ FSE: And finally, what’s your advice for other aspiring Mums? Penny: ‘If you have a passion for something and you think you could earn some money from it, go for it! Write yourself a business plan to see if it’s workable. There’s lots of advice out there - the Council were very helpful and offer advice on how to boost your business. Finding a gap in the market is exciting and running your own business means that you can set your own hours and rules. I love my job and I love being Mum, so I get the best of both worlds.’
You can contact Penny on 02392 825010 www.artypotz.com
need to know about the Scouts; ‘Ninja Time’ (you get belts for answering the correct time); ‘Percy Parker’ for the times tables and ‘Eggs on Legs’ for help with mathematics. Looking to the future my hope is that my children will not just play games but might also have the opportunity to make a game – or even an App. The schools ICT curriculum needs to reflect this and be open to the idea of technological experimentation. This would be good news for personal development and learning.
But is complete resistance futile as today’s children may spend more time swiping screens than turning pages?
Right, where’s my phone? On searching I find that my partner is immersed in Angry Birds. It looks like it’s time to change that passcode again.
It’s not just games of course - there are also plenty of ‘educational’ Apps on the market nowadays. We’ve downloaded ‘My Badges’ – it tells you everything you

The view includes 50 square miles of natural harbour, 5 islands, 10 forts, 3 cathedrals and a castle dating back 1700 years! There are around 120,000 ship movements in Portsmouth Harbour each year and the Spinnaker Tower, with it’s High Spy Interactive Ship Finder, is the perfect vantage point to watch them all come and go. It’s particular good for watching the impressive Naval ships heading out or returning home to the Dockyards, just next to the Tower.
What’s coming up? During June half term (2nd to 10th June) children can visit for just £1 when accompanied by a full paying adult (maximum 2 children per full paying adult). Over the summer holidays (24th July to 31st August), the ‘Aim High for the Summer’ event invites all to join in with a series of challenges and competitions. Friends in High Places (17th to 28th September) is an exclusive exhibition showcasing photography, artwork and video from a series of iconic towers around the world, featuring famous landmarks including the Empire State Building and the Eiffel Tower. More event details at www.spinnakertower.co.uk
What do our visitors say? “Views are fabulous!” “It’s Magical” “Staff are very helpful” “An iconic landmark” “High Spy Ship Finder is fascinating” “Well worth visiting” “WOW!”
