Free swimming for under 8’s Active Nation are delighted to announce that free swimming for under 8’s will be re-introduced at Bitterne Leisure Centre and The Quays Swimming and Diving Complex to help encourage children to be more active as part of our ongoing mission to persuade the nation to be active in the run up to the London 2012 Olympics and beyond. Following the huge success of the government-backed free swimming scheme for under 16s that ran at the pools between 2009 and 2010 and saw nearly 16,000 Southampton youngsters take advantage of free sessions, it is hoped that the new scheme will again give thousands of local young people the opportunity to get active with their families. Southampton Gateway to the World Situated at the heart of Southampton’s emerging Cultural Quarter and housed in the grade II listed former Magistrates’ Court, SeaCity is an interactive experience designed for visitors of all ages.
Using the city’s unique historic collections this gallery recounts the stories of people who have departed from or arrived in the port of Southampton in the last 2,000 years, from the earliest settlers to the stories of people living in the city today.
This innovative, state-of-the-art museum, with new galleries and spaces focuses on Southampton and its connection with the sea, including the city’s Titanic heritage and the stories of the people who have travelled in and out of the city through the ages.
Special Exhibition – TITANIC THE LEGEND
Southampton’s Titanic Story The first area of the SeaCity Museum tells the story of the impact on Southampton of the sinking in 1912 of the White Star liner Titanic. Through a fascinating 1:25 scale, interactive model of the Titanic, visitors of all ages are given an insight into the lives of the crew aboard the Titanic, many of whom were Southampton residents. A bridge across the triple height atrium divides the two sets of galleries giving the impression of walking across a gangway to board the Titanic. From there, visitors will be able to appreciate the massive size of the Titanic as they view the image of the ship’s side on one wall of the glass-roofed atrium. A range of further interactive areas, featuring powerful oral testimony from Titanic survivors and ‘the Disaster Room’ describes the sequence of events from the time the ship struck the iceberg to its sinking, and rescue of passengers by the Carpathia.

The sinking of the Titanic has always fascinated people all over the world. In its centenary year, this exhibition will explore why, out of all of the historical sea disasters, the story of the Titanic has taken on the status of a legend. The Titanic story is explored from varied perspectives to consider how and why the Legend endures, the effect it has had on ship design, safety and, technological research as well as the ‘Titanic Industry’ which has developed around the legend.

Southampton City Libraries Favourite Book to Share Award 2012 Southampton’s search for 2012’s best family book sets sail with the launch of Southampton’s Favourite Book to Share Award which is ‘Sea’ or ‘Maritime’ themed for 2012. The competition, which is run by Southampton City Libraries, is designed to encourage parents and carers to enjoy a good story with children under the age of five. Southampton’s Favourite Book to Share Award has been running successfully in the city for over a decade now and we are incredibly proud that Southampton families and early years settings continue to enjoy and promote this award for shared reading. Southampton City Council Libraries consistently receive around 4000 votes from children and their carers in the city. Shared reading is a great springboard for starting school, and enjoying books from birth helps families and children stay engaged and have fun together! Copies of each of the colourful tales will be available from April 1st at all of the city’s libraries, Sea City Museum or Tudor House & Garden, along with voting slips. Staff from Library Services will also be visiting parent and toddler groups across the city to help them to get involved in the competition. Parents, carers and children have until 31 July to register their vote and every entrant will qualify for the chance to win copies of all six books. What’s in a nursery? By Joanna Parry activities interspersed with naps, meals and outdoor play. Day nurseries offer continuity of care and your child doesn’t have to stay all day – many day nurseries will do half days or you can collect early.
Nursery schools
So, your little one’s growing up and it’s time to start thinking about nurseries. Day nurseries, nursery schools, preschools – nurseries come in all shapes and sizes and navigating your way through them can be daunting. Whether you’re going back to work or just want your child to benefit from all that nursery has to offer, here is our guide to finding the best, and right, nursery for you. Studies have shown that children who attend nurseries can be more confident and often go on to do better at school. A good nursery will prepare your child for those first few nerve-wracking weeks at school, plus most children thrive on the stimulation at nursery. Another advantage is the year-round care they offer, and you know your child is being looked after by qualified staff who won’t become ill and need time off work – at least not all at the same time!
Day nurseries Open usually 8am-6pm, day nurseries are a good option for working parents as many will take babies from 3 months. The day follows structured
Nursery schools are often more formal in the way they structure sessions. They usually take children from 2.5-3 years and provide a grounding for starting school, teaching letters, shapes, numbers and sometimes even early-stage reading. Nursery schools give children the opportunity to make friends of the same age as most require children to do either 5 morning or 5 afternoon sessions, so the same children will be there everyday. They are often smaller scale with a personal touch, too, but perhaps are not so convenient for working families.
Nursery classes in schools The first step in ‘real’ school life, these can be excellent for children who are ready for school and structured, educational play. They are convenient if you already have siblings at the school, but again sessions are often only 3 hours long which may not be practical. Nursery classes in independent schools are more likely to offer full school-day sessions but nursery classes attached to state schools are free! It’s important to remember that a school nursery place does not automatically guarantee a place in reception.
Pre-schools and playgroups Playgroups usually take children from 2.5yrs, offering short sessions to ‘ease’ your child out of the home and into a more sociable learning environment where they can play, learn and have fun. Playgroups have a varied mix of toys, games, singing, story-time, arts and crafts and usually an outdoor area. Parents are encouraged to be active members of the playgroup and their small-scale settings are less daunting for shy children. They are also excellent value for money as they tend to be not-for-profit and are sometimes staffed by volunteers, with parents staying to help out.
Workplace nurseries Much sought-after, workplace nurseries provide full or part-time childcare, but think about the location. If your journey to work is an hour long your toddler may not appreciate the trip home at 6pm and a nursery around the corner from home might be a better idea.
SureStart Children’s Centres A number of Centres offer affordable, flexible childcare for up to 10 hours a day. Worth considering! NURSERY CHECKLIST Once you’ve found a nursery, go and have a look. Go back again if you’re still not sure. A good nursery will welcome a visit and might even let your child join in. By watching the other children you’ll get a good idea of whether it’s the right environment for your child.

Nursery Education Does the nursery have a welcoming, happy, cheerful atmosphere? Some nurseries offer cosy, home-like environments whereas others have more room to run around in. A childfriendly outdoor space can be a real draw when choosing a nursery. Also, check basic things like security, cleanliness and equipment.

Start early! “It sounds ridiculous, but I put my bump down for nursery when I was pregnant,” says Camille, mother of one. “OK, I wasted a few registration fees, but at least I got a place at the nursery I really wanted.”

Watch the staff. Look at their ages – the younger staff may have energy but the older ones have experience and usually more patience. Are the carers interacting with the children or are they just chatting to each other? Look at staff turnover and ask if the nursery ever uses agency staff. Consider your child’s routine. “My little one sleeps 1-3pm,” says Alice, a first-time mum, “so afternoon nursery is no good for me.” Many parents also want a nursery that provides all meals – but do consider what your child is being fed and where it is cooked!

What does the nursery offer? How are the sessions structured? Look for a mix of fun along with quieter activities. Are there additional classes such as French and ballet? Do they take the older children on outings? How much is your child learning in preparation for school? Do you want them to learn letters and numbers?

Read the latest OFSTED report – a great way for detailed info on everything from quality of care and education to cleanliness and opportunities for play. Although all nurseries follow OFSTED guidelines, there’s room for interpretation!

How flexible will the nursery be if you need to swap a day or add an afternoon? You’ll soon discover how useful this can be

The best way to choose a nursery is gut instinct. Look at whether the children are relaxed, happy, stimulated and engaged. “If it clicks, it’s probably right,” says Jo.

Nursery Education NURSERY GRANTS EXPLAINED Nursery fees vary greatly, depending on location, demand and what is offered. They start at around £100 a week and go up to 4 times that, but there are ways to get help with the costs: Nursery Education Grant – all 3 and 4 year olds are entitled to 15 hours of free early-education a week for 38 weeks of the year. This applies until they reach compulsory school age (the term following their fifth birthday), and can be applied flexibly over a minimum of three days. Free early education places are available at a range of early years settings including nursery schools and classes, children’s centres, day nurseries, play groups and pre-schools and childminders. Your child will be eligible for the Nursery Education Grant from the term after their third birthday. If you choose a nursery which costs more than the funding or use the nursery for more hours the grant will be offset against your bill

Education ReadingChest.co.uk – gets children reading! Should I teach my child to read before he goes to school? Some children are ready to learn to read before starting school and some are not. In Reception class there are those who can read quite fluently and those who cannot yet recognise any letters. It will all even out in the end. You should not feel at all pressurised into teaching your child to read before starting school, but if they are keen, then why not encourage them!
Why hasn’t my child brought home a reading book from school yet? Many Reception teachers don’t send children home with a book until October half term or even Christmas. Some will wait until children know all or most of their letters / sounds. This is not the same as being able to recite the alphabet – but recognising that letters or groups of letters together make sounds (phonemes), e.g. the word ‘boy’ is made of two sounds, not three (b –oy).
I want to do more to help my child learn to read – what can I do? If you think your child is ready to learn to read – then getting the right level of books to build confidence is important. Reading scheme books are designed to do this and are central to teaching children to read in primary schools. There are many different reading schemes, one of the most well known being Oxford Reading Tree with the characters – Biff, Chip, Kipper and Floppy the dog.
You could be missing out on financial assistance by not taking advantage of employer supported childcare vouchers if you are working… Employers can assist their employees with the costs of childcare through childcare vouchers. Employees can purchase vouchers up to £55 a week, or £243 a month usually as part of a ‘salary sacrifice’ scheme. Both parents may be able to access vouchers if their employer offers this scheme. The vouchers pay for Ofsted registered childcare and can be saved up to pay for summer holiday care as well spent throughout the year. Salary sacrifice means that an employee formally agrees to a reduction to their taxable salary and receives this reduction in childcare vouchers; saving on Tax and National Insurance Contributions. This may affect pensions and Tax Credit entitlement so this needs to be checked. Clubs and Classes By Robina Cowan With the constant wail that schools focus on teaching children to pass tests, adding out of school activities gives your child a chance to shine and have fun outside the classroom. Hobbies lead to new friends, they reveal hidden talents and develop skills that could become a real advantage one day. Everyone is good at something, and finding it is a huge confidence booster. Just because you drop the ball in PE doesn’t mean you wouldn’t be great at swimming or dancing; the child who isn’t interested in the bright lights can still shine in an arts class or on the sports field. There really is plenty of variety to choose from, as we’ve been finding out. Languages With over 60 different languages now spoken in schools across the UK, we are bringing up our children in a truly multicultural society. Experts agree that the earlier a child starts learning other languages, the better. Children are extremely receptive to new ideas and information, especially when they’re having fun. Preschool language classes build confidence and familiarity on an instinctive level, typically through songs, dances and simple games. School age children should be more aware of grammar and syntax, and supplementing school lessons with a language club will pay dividends boosting their confidence, vocabulary and appreciation of different cultures.

Music Music gives amazing educational and developmental benefits. From just three months, babies actively enjoy music groups, and as soon as they can shake a rattle, they can join in too. Belting out a song teaches rhythm and helps develop speech. Those hand actions you do when you sing nursery rhymes? They boost spatial reasoning, which will later be useful in maths and science. Playing an instrument is great for dexterity and co-ordination. It teaches teamwork and responsibility, and improves concentration and memory. At six or seven, children night start with a recorder, keyboard or violin. From eight, guitar is an option. Brass and wind instruments are best left to older children, when children can join their school band or orchestra. 12

Theatre arts “I like acting and pretending to be someone else and learning songs and dances with my friends,” says five-yearold William, who has attended a children’s performing arts club for nearly a year. And the skills that a child learns through performing arts classes will stand them in good stead throughout their lives - twenty years down the line, they’ll thank you when it comes to addressing a meeting room or chairing a conference. Performing arts classes are not only for children with starry aspirations. Theatre arts bring literature to life, and build self-confidence. Learning to perform in front of an audience can help children with public speaking; role playing and improvisation give their minds freedom to develop while developing empathy for other people’s feelings.
Arts and Crafts Active Bodies Regular exercise is hugely beneficial to long term health and fitness. It’s easy to see the value of activities that help children burn off some energy at the end of the school day, or build skills in sports which they already enjoy at school. Even the tiniest children can benefit from the social side of playing team games, or the fun element of learning a ‘solo’ sport like trampolining, tennis or diving. When children are engaged, they pay more attention – 61% of young people claim to be better behaved in PE than other lessons, in most cases simply because they enjoy it more. This is

Even the smallest child loves the sensation of clay between fingers, or the thrill of splodging finger paints on paper. Expressing themselves through the arts – whether through painting, drawing, story writing or making ‘junk models’ – gives children the freedom to unleash their creativity and push boundaries. By providing a balance and a creative outlet, art skills complement and assist literacy and numeracy skills in the classroom. If you’re not artistically inclined yourself, or never have the time to sit down and help your child create a wonderful cushion, collage or clay model, why not leave it to the experts? Clubs and Classes School support Parents choose out of school academic subjects for their children for a host of reasons – perhaps your little one excels in maths and you want to give them more challenging and stimulating tuition – or maybe you simply want to supplement what is being taught at school by introducing the skills needed for independent study and fluency in the subject. Whatever your reason, group or individual tuition can make a huge difference to your child’s progress and greatly enhance their school-based studies. More and more parents, particularly in London, are hiring private tutors to give their child the edge when it comes to achieving in class, or practicing and preparing for exams. If your child is bringing home good school reports and is happy and settled, there’s no need; however there’s no longer any stigma in finding extra help if you want to, and the best classes are fun as well as educational.
Five benefits of extra curricular activities 1. Curriculum boosting After-school activities and clubs are a great way to complement and extend what children have precious little time for at school, especially art, music and languages 2. Socialising Claire, mother of four under 10 year-olds, believes it is important for children to make new friends outside school: “It really helps them stand on their own and develop their confidence. There isn’t that pecking order thing that you have in the playground. It’s a chance to break out of whatever mould you’ve been cast in”
Practical Considerations While it might seem tempting to guide your child to musical, sporting and artistic genius outside the classroom, they need time for just ‘chilling’ too. Liz Baker is a parent, and also a school teacher. In her view: “there is no point in enrolling in every class going. Don’t assume your child will get an academic head start. They will only benefit academically when they are ready, and not before. Remember children get exhausted too - give them time to themselves. Children should choose and be given a taste of each activity before deciding if he or she wants to commit to it long-term – there’s no gain in putting your child under pressure.” Think ahead. You may need to put your child’s name on a waiting list, particularly for more popular classes Stay local. Walking distance is best, otherwise getting there and back becomes another chore Great staff. The best leaders are enthusiastic, skilled, trained, and have eyes in the back of their heads to spot children who need a little more encouragement, particularly when they are new and might feel shy Additional costs. Will you need specialist clothes or equipment? Does the club offer these second-hand? Is there an annual subscription or insurance charge? How much are exam fees? Look-see. Many clubs offer a free trial class, especially if they run on a term basis. If that’s not possible, ask to pay weekly for the first two sessions Give it time. Some children are prone to dropping out. Unless you think they are completely and utterly unsuited to the activity, or really, really hate it, stick it out for at least a couple of terms.

3. After-school care When both parents work, after-school activities on school premises can be incredibly valuable. Most schools offer a mix of teacher— run and externally—organised clubs after school, and even at weekends 4. A sense of achievement Amanda says: “Kitty, 8, has just reached purple belt and she has been made karate captain. She’s very proud, it’s tremendously good for her.” 5. For all the family When Patrick started tennis lessons, his parents were inspired to get active too.
