A happy nursery! On 16 July 2010 Peques Anglo-Spanish nursery held their annual BBQ Party, 60s style, in their lovely setting in North End Road, Fulham. We were impressed by their enthusiasm and energy, lucky are the children who attend this nursery! Did you know it is only the 6th nursery out of over 70 in the whole Hammersmith & Fulham Borough that will receive the QUILT-a Quality Assurance certificate that will recognize them as "Investors in Children". They also are the only nursery in London which conveys Spanish and British culture as well as offering mandarin lessons! Several surveys have demonstrated that bilingual children gain entry to more universities, have better career opportunities and are better off financially (plus there’s much more than these advantages.) They have a good, simple rule: one carer, one language. Your child will little by little become aware of the richness of worldwide cultures. Capture their smile Capture those precious moments while your children are young with classic, natural photographs of your family. Local photographer Janine Stow works outside of a studio to produce timeless images that reflect the innocence and essence of childhood, whether that’s at home, on the beach, in the park – anywhere that is special to you. “None of my photos are formally posed,” says Janine. “My goal with every portrait is to create an image that reflects the true personality and sparkle of each child, allowing the shy child to be shy and the wild child to be wild.” With no hefty session fee and your own DVD with 350 of the best images for you to keep and print photographs from, it’s worth a shot! www.janinestowphotography.com, tel: 07900 495615.

Summer may be over but the holo – the ‘lilo with a hole’ – is still a fab product for all you pregnant ladies out there. Designed by a mum for mums-to-be, the holo was launched last October as a holiday accessory for pregnant women to sunbathe in comfort, but it has come a long way since then. It has recently been endorsed by a London physiotherapist who now uses it with most of his pregnant patients. Plus, you can use it at home. “I used my holo in the later stages of pregnancy just relaxing watching telly,” says one mum. “It was much more comfortable and dignified than going on all fours as they recommend you do!” The holo is available online at www.holo-lilo.com for £34.50 but is also now being sold by Jojo Maman Bebe, www.jojomamambebe.co.uk

Get your children playing
New research shows a staggering one in five children aged 6-11 years do not receive any support from their parents when it comes to getting involved in sport outside of school. The findings, released by David Lloyd Leisure as part of its Team Family campaign, also found that a further 50% of boys and 15% of girls say they would play more sport if their parents Denise Lewis supporting the Team Family canpaiggn were prepared to drive them to sports clubs. Yet despite this, a third of parents believe their children should be playing more sport. “I wholeheartedly support this campaign,” says Olympic gold medal winner Denise Lewis OBE, the Team Family ambassador. “Parents play a massive role in inspiring their children to get involved in sport. Without an incredible level of support from my mum I would never have achieved all that I have.” To find out more about how you and your family can get involved in sport, visit www.davidlloyd.co.uk

Maggie’s treasure trove: SW1 Pimlico
Maggie O’Brien continues her search for the best things and places in SW London... this month SW1 ‘Apart from its architectural beauty, inspired by the Regency, this central London district won international renoun through the Ealing film ‘Passport to Pimlico’......It retains a sense of disengagement, of quiet aloofness, though its set within the sound of Big Ben’. (James Dowsing, ‘Guide to Pimlico’).
Picking up a coach from nearby Victoria Station as a student, or visiting the Tate Britain, was about as much as I knew of Pimlico. This month, in ‘Peeping at Postcodes’ I thought I’d enlist the help of one local reader, Sarah Pickard, mother of Roseabel, 10 months, and literally let her walk and talk me through Pimlico. She has tried and tested various classes/activities and we looked at everything from fruit and vegetable markets, to baby massages and Galleries. I was surprised to see so much on offer in the area, and especially what is available, to new parents.
Walking with Sarah... Sarah and her husband Dan, live locally and have done for some years, however, having Roseabel has really made them see Pimlico through different eyes. Both established teachers, Sarah at a school in Camberwell and Dan, a Deputy Head in Covent Garden, agree that having a baby has made them explore different opportunities and develop additional interests. Sarah, whilst on maternity leave, although having returned to work recently part- time, particularly felt it was vital to make new friends and like any new parent or main carer, has been forced (in the nicest sense) to find out what is happening in the day time. As with so many areas we’ve looked at, there is a vast range of services / ‘things to do’ across all budgets. I’m trying merely to achieve a flavour of this.
Sarah and Roseable SW1
Some local clinics/libraries Sarah has attended include: Westminster City Council - Activities (EYESP –Early Years Services and Play) held at 121 Marsham Street Children’s Centre SW1 and Churchill Garden’s Youth Club, SW1. Baby Café Support with breastfeeding/speaking to other parents. Introduction to Childcare Help with Basic Parenting skills. Tiny Time – Singing and Playing for under 2’s. Pimlico Library Classes Include: Jiggle Baby Bounce and Rhyme, Under 5’s Rhyme time, Spanish Story time. Living next door to a stay at home dad of twins, Sarah also pointed out there is a session, Just for dads (first Saturday of month). “These classes have been an excellent way of getting to know other local parents and this is essential. I have a very supportive family and friends network, but obviously they are not with me on a daily basis and as any new parent knows, having a new baby can be a real shock initially. Roseabel and I particularly like the puppets in the Jiggle Baby Bounce and Rhyme session”. Pimlico Toy Library Right on Sarah’s doorstep, this is worth knowing about. It provides a wide range of toys and books for a £5 annual donation per family. Karen, local mother and owner of ‘Appuru’, (see later) also mentioned this to me as being a very useful facility. Calmer Clinics - Dolphin Square “Several friends have spoken very highly of the Baby Massage in Dolphin Square, it’s both affordable and good for the baby”, says Sarah. This was re-iterated again by Karen. There is an extensive range of therapies including; Osteopathy (including Cranial & Paediatric Osteopathy) aromatherapy, and sports massage. Tachbrook Street Market Sarah walks daily to the local market and gets fresh fruits and vegetables. She says, “It’s great being able to get out, even in winter, load up the buggy and not have to traipse around a supermarket”. (Open every day except Sunday). Pimlico Farmers’ Market “This is another favourite, we like supporting the various farmers and the produce is always very fresh and reminds me of being at home in the countryside of Norfolk”! (Open every Saturday 9am-1pm).

On local culture Westminster Cathedral “We love walking absolutely everywhere, we haven’t tried to be green, there is little need for a car or even public transport. Westminster Cathedral is spitting distance and it really is beautiful”. (September is an exciting month as there is a planned visit from the Pope). Apollo Theatre Originally an ‘Art Deco’ cinema, it re-opened in 1981 and became one of London’s largest theatres. Currently showing ‘Wicked’, (“a brilliant show and a fabulous theatre”, said Olivia, Joseph, Cordelia and Madeleine, my children, who saw it recently). “We love having the availability of quality, local London theatre”, said Sarah. Tate Britain “Had to mention this, the National Gallery for British Art from 1500 to present day. Even if you don’t actually look around the gallery, because it’s so close to me, I get a coffee nearby and simply soak up the atmosphere. I look forward to Roseabel being a bit older and doing some of the great activities they lay on for children”, says Sarah, knowing this having visited many times in her capacity as a teacher. (Inc: Big and Small, part of the Early Years Programme which runs activities and workshops for under 5’s). Walking near the lively and historic St. George’s Square which is always a hive of activity, Sarah discussed another big favourite, St. James’s Park, where she and her friends walk, with buggies in tow and afterwards relax at the café and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. “The river is full of wildlife and Roseabel loves the ducks and geese, it doesn’t feel like Central London at all”.
Great local shops include:
Eating/drinking Gastronomia Italia - Sarah suggested this was a great place to either take away or sit in and simply eat ‘a platter of good Italian food’, in a friendly environment. Children are made very welcome. The Orange Pub – “Relaxed and roomy, this is a definite local favourite and a great place to meet up for a drink with or without children”, says Sarah.
The Orange Pub SW1
Some other local things to do Regency Café – Fashionable and now famous Art Deco café, was part of the ‘Layer Cake’ film set. (Although, wouldn’t recommend taking a baby at lunchtimes, it was too busy when Sarah and I tried). Churchill War Rooms – Fascinating tour of basement shelter and secret Planning rooms for Wartime Ministers and Military. “A truly remarkable visit”, says Maddie, 11. Rippon Cheese Stores – ‘For anyone who appreciates perfectly matured, well-kept cheese of every decent variety, Philip and Karen Rippon’s shop is a treat’- Telegraph. Certainly, when we walked past, the shop was busy and looked very inviting. Warwick Pharmacy – Excellent local chemist, particularly recommended by Sarah as “very informative and has that personal touch, they even know Roseabel’s name”. Obviously this is not an exhaustive list by any means, there are literally pages and pages of things to do and see; Baby &Toddler groups, including ‘Pimlico Playtots’, ( drop-in sessions held at Holy Apostles’ Church Hall), and many more classes / clinics, many of which can be found under Westminster City Council’s website.

Appuru -‘London’s Top Boutique for natural and organic personal care products’ Whilst walking around, I popped in and talked to Karen who opened up this excellent shop 21/2 years ago. Prior to this, Karen was a Colposcopy nurse for 21 years and had originally started running the business as an internet hobby. She is passionate about her work, dedicated and loves being able to meet people face to face, help assess their needs and provide advice and the right product for them. As a mother herself, she is familiar with pregnancy and being new to motherhood, and the many issues surrounding it. Karen says that she enjoys chats with new mothers as they can feel very isolated and families are often some distance away. She likes the ‘counselling’ side of her job and has a special interest in helping advise pregnant women on how to avoid stretch marks and unnecessary pain and damage, through massage. Appuru stocks a huge range of natural and organic products that cater for all budgets and is the local distributor of Mama Packs in South West London. (I personally love the sun cream range, as I hate plastering myself and my children in chemicals.) Can do with DS
FRANCES LOATES finds out about a Teddingtonbased charity, how for 40 years it has supported those affected by Down’s syndrome throughout the UK. She also discovers what’s going on locally for families affected and those who want to get involved with the charity’s wonderful work. From small beginnings as a local support group for parents in 1970, The Down’s Syndrome Association (DSA) is now a national charity with over 20 000 members across the country and an impressive record.

C
arol Boys, Chief Executive, says, ‘Forty years ago, people with Down’s syndrome were fighting for the basic rights – to life, medical treatment, education and to be an accepted member of society. The ability to engage in activities that help define one’s sense of self were limited or non-existent; however, the DSA has led the case for change as an instrumental force expanding the range of opportunities at both local and national level.’ The changes in those 40 years have been phenomenal, due a large extent to the charity’s work. The 1971 Education Act changed the status of children with Down’s syndrome from the previous and quite outrageous label of ‘ineducable’ and recognised their right to attend school. Also that year legislation was passed which ensured that those with Down’s syndrome had a right to access services within their own communities. Far from the lives led in long- stay hospitals which was the expectation earlier in the 20th century, where parents were urged to consign their children with learning disabilities, people with Down’s syndrome now lead full, rich and varied lives. Our society is a long way from being fully inclusive for those with any form of disability but recent progress has been impressive. With much still to do, it is hoped that instead of a life of social exclusion, affected families will one day feel part of the mainstream. The charity works endlessly for understanding of those with Down’s syndrome among the general public. They provide information, counselling, support and advocacy for those affected plus their families and professionals who support them. Most of all they champion the rights of people with Down’s syndrome to live the life of their choice. Since 1970, the Down’s Syndrome Association has worked tirelessly to improve knowledge. As Carol Boys says, ‘Our work is not yet done and I look forward to working with others in the learning disability arena to ensure that opportunities for those with Down’s syndrome continue to grow and flourish’.
What is Down’s? One in every 1000 babies, or 600 babies a year in the UK, is born with Down’s syndrome, a genetic condition with those affected carrying 47 instead of the usual 46 pairs of chromosomes. Down’s syndrome is not a disease. People with Down’s syndrome are not ill and do not ‘suffer’ from this condition. Although older mothers have a higher individual chance of having a baby with Down’s syndrome, more are born to younger mothers, reflecting the higher birth rate in this age group. Everyone with Down’s syndrome has some degree of learning disability along with physical characteristics which may bring with them specific medical problems. Due to medical advances, the life expectancy of someone with Down’s syndrome is now 60 to 65 years with recent research into the condition enabling a greater understanding of the associated health issues.
With the right support, people with Down’s Syndrome do make friends, most go to mainstream school, have jobs and make decisions about their lives and futures.
Happening locally Big Step Forward The DSA’s organised a walk which took place on Sunday 6th June in Bushy Park just over the road from the National Office in Teddington. Whether you have 5 walkers or 50, the charity wants you to walk to celebrate Down’s syndrome and 40 years of the DSA. They can provide you with full instructions on how to organise your own walk along with up to the event support and tshirts for all registered walkers. The DSA has an annual operating need of approximately £1.6 million and this is met almost entirely on voluntary donation so your contribution makes a difference. To register, please contact Alexa Dizon on 0845 230 0372 or email alexa.dizon@downssyndrome.org.uk
Fulham FC Badgers The DSActive programme began in 2006 as a pilot programme with the Fulham FC Foundation in partnership with the Down’s Syndrome Association in response to a lack of footballing opportunities for people with Down’s syndrome. The programme has grown to include seven teams with six respective professional football clubs. In total, more than 200 players engage in DSActive training weekly. In March Down’s Syndrome football teams from across London came together for their first-ever football tournament. Other participating London clubs were QPR Tiger Cubs, Charlton Upbeats and West Ham United DS Team. Unlike traditional tournaments, the main focus was not on winning or losing, but just taking part. The event was a resounding success and the DSA now has plans for a national Down’s Syndrome Football League.
Get it right More than many disabilities, this syndrome seems prone to misconceptions. For example those with Down’s syndrome do not ‘all look alike’ – they can share certain characteristics but with always look more like Mum or Dad than anyone else with the condition. What’s more, people with Down’s syndrome are by no means necessarily all happy and affectionate and indeed no different to anyone else in their character traits and varying moods. When speaking about Down’s syndrome it is important not to fall into the trap of being offensive or plain inaccurate so as not to perpetuate any myths about the condition. This is especially important when talking to your children. The Down’s Syndrome Association’s website is

Is your child ‘future-smart’? What are the magic ingredients your child will need to flourish in an unpredictable world? Education expert C J Simister describes some activities and games to nurture your children’s minds. It’s one of those lurking, back-of-the-mind issues that most parents will have felt at least a little uneasy about at some point or other: how can we be sure that when the time comes our children are going to be ready not only to face but also to flourish in the big, bad (but tremendously exciting) world? Particularly as the world is so very different now to when we grew up. The pace of social, economic and technological change is such that knowledge – regurgitated facts, figures and A Levels – won’t be all that counts. There are other ingredients that are needed if a child is truly to flourish, to shine and to become all that they can be. The problem is these hidden secrets of success often aren’t taught in schools, where passing exams and getting the grades are too frequently the sole agenda. The foundations laid during early childhood make a tremendous difference to a child’s future. Those personal qualities and thinking habits that our children form when they’re young will be the ones that last.
The hidden secrets of success 1. Perseverance – wouldn’t it be great if our kids grew up with the sort of confident and proactive outlook that would enable them to meet each obstacle that arises by going over it, under it, round it, whatever it takes, but without being overly daunted? 2. Curiosity and creativity – the ingredients needed to find new solutions, come up with inventive ideas and solve unforeseen problems. 3. Resilience – because, after all, everyone fails at some point and what really makes a person stand out from the crowd is whether they’ve the courage required to get back up, dust themselves down and have another go. 4. The confidence to take a considered risk when the moment is right – absolutely essential if our children are to make the most of opportunity and discover truly what they’re capable of. 5. An ability to sort sense from nonsense – the ‘critical thinking’ shield to hold up in day-to-day life. 6. Initiative and an independent approach – add this to the mixture and we could really sit back, content to watch our children tackle whatever life throws at them. These are the Cinderella gifts for the modern world and what I believe it means to be ‘futuresmart’. There’s so much that you can do to make a real difference to your child’s future. We now know a great deal about how children’s minds develop and grow, about the sort of responses and activities that will help to develop a confident, innovative and resilient mindset. Simply by being more aware of the value of these ‘hidden secrets of success’, you’ve taken a big step forward. And
by making small changes to the way you speak and react to your children, by introducing occasional games and activities here and there – over tea, in the car, even in the queue at the supermarket – you’ll be helping to spread a little of that fairy godmother magic yourself.
Help your child to think independently Getting kids to open up and talk more deeply about things is something lots of parents find a challenge. And yet if you can establish the sort of home environment where your children feel encouraged to express, discuss and think carefully about their own and other people’s ideas and opinions, you’re laying a fabulous foundation for later life. As John F Kennedy pointed out, ‘Too often we enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.’ But let’s face it, it’s not surprising that our children are a little reluctant to get into discussions when the opening gambit is nearly always, ‘So how was school today?’ Lots of kids have a sneaking suspicion that we’re not asking what happened at school, but how well did you do; checking up on them basically. If you want your child to communicate more – and to develop the independent thinking and reasoning that go along with this, not to mention a wider interest in the world around them – then you’ve got to make it fun.
historical figure. For fun, you could even set an extra place at the table for your mystery celebrity, then pretend you have some magic truth powder that your children are going to sprinkle over the family’s chosen visitors. This will grant them the power to ask each person any three questions they wish – and the response will be the whole truth and nothing but the truth! What will they ask? What might their visitors say? It would be the scoop of the century! This one always provokes a really great debate, as narrowing down the final choice involves such a lot of reasoning and flexibility of mind. • In the news Give your noticeboard a topical theme every now and then by encouraging everyone to cut out short articles and headlines that are really eye-catching. Some great newspapers exist for children now – try FirstNews (an award-winning weekly newspaper for children aged 7-14, (www.firstnews.co.uk) and the BBC’s excellent online source of news items for children (http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews). Younger children often love stories about animals, celebrities, outer space and sport, so these are the sorts of things to go for initially. As they get a little older, it’s extraordinary how many topical issues are of real potential fascination to them – global warming, animal rights, smoking bans in public places, freedom of speech… the list is endless.
Tea-time talk One great idea is to schedule a weekly tea-time talk. Have a special noticeboard and get everyone involved. Keep a stash of Post-it notes (if you’re really organised, have a different colour for each member of the family) and make it a family tradition that whenever anyone thinks of an interesting question they’d like to chat about, they scribble it down and stick it to the board, then when your tea-time talk comes around, you’ll have plenty of subjects to chat about. Consider varying the theme every now and then to keep everyone interested: • I wonder… Sometimes you could challenge everyone to begin their questions with the words ‘I wonder…’ This is a fantastic way of enticing your children to ask some really great questions – and the fact that you’re joining in too means your kids quickly learn a really important lesson: that asking questions is not something they’re meant to grow out of. Curiosity signals an active, open, problem-solving spirit. • Magic powder Another idea to use every now and then is to get everyone to come up with one person they might each like to invite to tea and post their names on the noticeboard. It might, for instance, be a current celebrity or someone in the news; it could be a character from a book or film or a particular

School talk
New school – making it easy By Joanna Parry
Our top tips for a happy, healthy start to school: Be positive – don’t let your own anxiety show Prepare in advance and when the big day arrives keep calm, get up early and don’t rush Talk to your child about what to expect at school Don’t forget it will all be over soon - once your child is settled the whole thing will seem like a breeze!

On the day
The first few weeks
“I’ll be worse than her,” says Stephanie of her daughter’s first day at school. “I’ll be a wreck!” There might be nerves, tears and first-day chaos but try to be confident on the day and keep these top tricks in mind: • separation anxiety can be heart-wrenching but leave your child with a quick kiss, a big smile and reassurance that you will be back later. Don’t linger, don’t sneak out (although this seems like the easy option it can cause distress when your child realises you have gone), and even if you hear screaming, don’t come back! Remember, most children only cry for a few minutes after their parents leave • if your child is clingy or very upset ask staff to help. They are used to it and will help both you and your child adjust • if you feel emotional try to hold back the tears until you leave the classroom – I promise you, you won’t be alone! Ask the other mums to go for a coffee after drop-off – they may be feeling just like you • at the end of the day pick your child up on time, and don’t forget to bring a snack! • Leave the house with time to spare and arrive early. Stressing over time is definitely not helping nerves! It will also give your child more time meet friends before the day starts
Even if the first day goes well it can still take time to settle in, as your child slowly realises that school is a permanent feature of their lives. • encourage small talk: talk to your child about their day, but don't be surprised if you get little back. “What did you do at school today?” often gets the reply “nothing” or “I can’t remember.” Try asking specific questions: “who did you sit next to at lunch?”, “did you use the computer at school today?” You’ll get a much more positive response • homework adds pressure too. “I was unprepared for the amount of work my son received in his first term and was faced with cries of “why do I have to do homework?” Give your child two choices of when to do it – they’ll feel empowered and be more cooperative. Read to your child as much as you can - it builds up vocabulary, helps them perform better, it makes a good bedtime routine, it is also a very precious moment between parent and child • stick week-planners to the fridge to keep on top of school life. www.activityvillage.co.uk has printable rosettes, badges and medals that you can use as rewards, plus back to school games, activities, crafts and jigsaws • ban TV before school (and after school if you can!). TV is stimulating say Relax Kids and may cause sleep problems. On the other hand exercise and playing sports are great stressbusters. Let them run off their anxiety and they’ll sleep better too! • walk to school. It’s a great time to chat and catch up and it gives your child a chance to wake up properly, ensuring they are refreshed and ready for the day. Make sure you start this good habit on Day 1, and don’t turn back! • set a good regular routine with healthy meals and early nights, baths and even massages before bed. A new range of products called Aromagels combine aromatherapy with reflexology to aid sleep and restlessness. For these, plus tips to aid sleep visit www.speciallittleproducts.com Relax Kids have great CDs for children to help them either simply relax, or de-stress, see their range on www.relaxkids.com • why all the rush? Leave half an hour early and stop to play in the park. Make it fun: run, kick a ball, spot caterpillars, collect leaves, marvel at the changing seasons. Most children nowadays are nature deprived, incorporate nature in your routine.
How to massage your child You’ve learnt to massage your baby but do you know how to massage your child? Lorraine is an aromatherapist qualified in massage, a “Massage in School” instructor, with over 11 yrs experience in massage. She teaches hands-on Parent and Child workshops to teach mums to massage their own children. Get a group of about 57 friends together with similar age children. She will bring the oils and will teach you some basic massage skills. Massage brings mother and child closer together, it is so simple to learn, and once you’ve picked up a few techniques, (the “bear stroke,” or “thousand hands”), you can do it on your own. A fun, relaxed 2.5hrs. Simply bring your own towels and gather your friends. (enquire for advanced courses) 020 8670 0143, a_gaughan@sky.com

Out of School Clubs and Classes By Robina Cowan
DEVELOPING INTERESTS outside the home is rich in rewards, from new social skills to those of the particular activity. If you’d like your child to join a local class but don’t know which one, let their interests guide you. There’s no point sending a painfully shy child to a drama class if they’ll be cowering in the corner when a good drum-bashing session or IT club would bring them out of themselves more effectively. If they babbled from an early age, they may find a second language comes easily; if they’re forever throwing themselves all over the sofa, consider a gym, swimming or dance class to focus their energies; if they’ve scribbled on the walls since an early age and can’t eat their fish fingers, carrots and peas until they’re carefully rearranged on the plate, consider art and craft or pottery classes, for example. We’ve been looking into the many benefits of out of school activities - and found the local classes. Little Gym
Languages Given that babies learn their mother tongue practically before anything else apart from motor skills, it makes sense that they can be introduced to a second language before it starts rolling into the school curriculum later in life.
Sports and Exercise In June, it was revealed that London has the dubious ‘honour’ of being the region with the highest proportion of obese children, and that Britons are among the fattest people in Europe -
so much for the 2012 Olympic effect. Yet pass any school playground at breaktime and the majority of children are running around, for the sheer exhilaration of moving at speed (typically exercising their lungs too by screaming at the same time!). If your children are naturally active then they’re following their instincts, but those slumped in front of the television or computer could do with a nudge towards a regular activity they’ll come to look forward to. Different sports suit different children; lively, outgoing boys and girls relish competitive team games; tennis develops hand-eye coordination as well as stretching young limbs;

Children who learn a foreign language at an early age do so effortlessly. At the most receptive stage of their development they are like sponges and develop a wonderful accent. They learn through verbal and physical participation and communicate without inhibition and self-consciousness. If children enjoy their early exposure to a foreign language and culture, they will absorb and retain this, ensuring not only a head start in secondary school, but building confidence in all areas of the curriculum. Language classes for children are extremely well designed - they are fun, happy and busy with plenty of activities including games, dances, songs and even cooking, to introduce the culture as much as the vocabulary.
classes first to learn and appreciate the basics before taking on trickier instrument tuition. Even preschool music classes which include rhythmic singing and clapping songs are contributing so much more than a bit of weekly fun.
Music
photo taken by Kerry-Anne Smith
A 2009 Booktrust survey found that almost two thirds of parents do not regularly sing or read nursery rhymes to their children because they did not believe they had any educational value. However, numerous studies have demonstrated that no matter the level of skill, music is one of the best ways to help early language development. Like speech, music has structure, rhythm and rules. It introduces new words and concepts through repetition, encourages turn-taking (just like in conversation), and helps children develop listening skills and attention spans. While some children - particularly those from musical families - can take to the violin or piano like ducks to water, it may be more rewarding to start in group singing, percussion and rhythm Karmadrama Summer Showcase

clubs and classes feature 2010 swimming builds strength without overstressing joints and ligaments; martial arts teach children to ‘read’ their opponents’ intentions; while dance adds poise, grace and flexibility to everyday movement.
Theatre and Performing Arts Drama is a wonderful extension of the ‘let’s pretend’ games young children love to play. Classes open and extend children’s imagination through role play and characterisation. Working to a theme or play introduces literature, classic stories and make-believe worlds which come to life through speech, song and movement. Students explore empathy for their characters and classmates, and learn to work effectively in groups, growing in confidence as they learn to express themselves more fully. Before too long, students learn to make eye contact, speak clearly in front of others and stand up tall when entering a room - attributes which will serve them well whatever their choice of career. All this and usually there is an end of term performance where the students have the chance to showcase their new skills in front of an appreciative audience.
Dance It’s a rare child who does not enjoy dressing up games, and dance is the perfect way to move ‘in character’, whether as a graceful fairytale ballerina princess, or grooving to a funkier beat. While dancing is great fun it also helps develop coordination, fitness and a sense of rhythm, musicality and expression, promoting self-discipline and confidence.
Arts and Crafts
Le Club Français FUN FRENCH FOR CHILDREN FROM 3-11yrs In school teaching for Keystage 2 children We also arrange clubs for nursery and primary schools throughout the boroughs of Merton and Wandsworth Call
From the earliest age, children just love to make things. Admittedly they start by making a mess, but in time their painting, sticking, kneading and moulding start to take a pleasing, recognisable form. When clutching a big paintbrush, sticking pasta to a piece of card and squeezing play dough, children are developing motor skills which will later be finetuned to manage tasks such as writing and using cutlery effectively. Furthermore, the early attempts are stimulating many senses while introducing new techniques and textures. “There’s nothing like using clay to develop children’s artistic abilities,” one local potter observed: “usually they don’t get the chance to do pottery until they’re much older, but the younger ones love it just as much.”
What the Children say: - “Our school never wins anything in sports so I joined an Under 8s soccer team. We have our own kit, train on Saturdays and play in the youth league against other teams. Sometimes scouts come down to watch - I’m really, really hoping they’ll pick me for the academy.” Josh, 7 - “We did Alice in Wonderland at the end of last term and I was a dormouse. We sang lots of songs and danced. When I saw all the mummies and daddies coming in it was scary but everyone clapped really hard at the end - I wanted to do it again!” Amelia, 5 - “Why streetdance? Because I’m a show off and it’s bare fresh. When I saw Diversity on TV last year I thought - I want to do that. You have to be fit and concentrate but we’re all great mates so it’s worth it.” Taylor, 11.
What to Look Out For Here are some more things to think about: 1. Having matched an activity to your child’s unique personality, check that the atmosphere in the class will also suit him or her. Is the teacher a person your child will relate to? Are the classes essentially fun, or does it seem that the teacher is pushing to gain the highest certificates for her pupils? Do classes lead to performances? Some children love this - others shudder at the thought of being on show. 2. Make sure the staff are qualified and have the required CRB checks and health and safety certificates. There is no harm in asking if you are unsure - they should have nothing to hide! 3. Most classes allow parents to sit in on a session or for children to attend a free trial class. Watch if the children are a) under control - not rigid but well within what you would hope a class to be; b) getting the balance of discipline and fun; c) getting constructive corrections from the teacher.
And Finally In your enthusiasm to bring out the child prodigy in your child, don’t lose sight of the fact that they’re already worked hard at school. If you have signed up Oliie for cello lessons purely in the hope of a specialist school place, or believe that dance school will mean definite fame and fortune via Britain’s Got Talent - think again! First and foremost, find an activity your child will really enjoy. If their interest flags, or changes after giving it a good shot, don’t be afraid to look around for a new activity which might suit them better as they grow and develop. Do also look for activities that do not involve hours in the car!

But examinations classes can be repetitive, in order to achieve perfect memorization, and may lead to boredom.
