Heavenly art Two girls from Streatham & Clapham High School have been awarded prizes at “Art in Heaven”, the national competition for 5-19 year olds run by NATRE, the National Association of Teachers of Religious Education. Nikki Peach and Hannah Christy, both in Year 8, competed against a record 25,000 students invited to use artistic media to illustrate and expand the thoughts they have explored during their Religious Education lessons. Nicola and Hannah’s work was entered in the category “Celebrating Life; Celebrating Love” and was an intricate 3 D model made using paper and card which considered the role of religion in contemporary society and the idea of a ‘global village.’ Jennifer Watts, Head of RE at SCHS, says “We were studying the Philosophy of Religion at the end of the summer term, when the girls were invited to send in their entries to the competition. I was delighted that Nikki and Hannah had taken ideas from our class discussions and shown such initiative, working hard on their own to produce a thoughtful piece which put the ideas of the group into a broader context.” The girls have been awarded certificates and book tokens, and have won resources for the RE Department.

Help on the line National charity Care for the Family is launching the first UK telephone befriending service for parents of children with an eating disorder. The line will offer parents one-toone ongoing support from a trained ‘befriender’ who will themselves have been through the experience of watching their own child struggle with an eating disorder. Studies suggest that eating disorders in children are at an all time high with as many as a quarter of adolescent girls in the UK currently affected and half of 9 to 10 year olds saying they would like to be thinner. The befrienders will be trained and supported by Anorexia and Bulimia Care and their expertise will be matched as closely as possible to the situation of the parent needing support, offering practical encouragement to give parents the means to help them cope. To arrange to speak to a befriender call 029 2081 0800 or email eatingdisorders@cff.org.uk For further information on eating disorders visit www.careforthefamily.org.uk/supportnet

Local Playhouse still under threat A few months ago the popular and much-loved Sands End Playhouse in Fulham discovered it was under threat of closure because of loss of funding due to Government cuts. Despite numerous appeals to the local council, without immediate help the Playhouse will be closed down at the end of January 2011 and this wonderful, treasured resource that offers stimulating, creative fun for the under-fives and a vital support network for their parents and carers will be lost for good. Now the families who use the Playhouse are fighting to save it. SEAPIA, the charity that operates the Playhouse, has been given a target of £10,000 to raise by the end of December. This will ensure business as usual at the Playhouse until March 2011, and give SEAPIA more time to seek long-term sponsors. If you would like to help save this important play space, you can donate online at www.justgiving.com/friends-of-playhouse or join the existing 700 members of the group Save the Sands End Playhouse on Facebook. Please dig deep and give generously, as Lin Waghorn, the Centre Manager, says, “It’s not our group, it’s the parents’ group. Mums tell us it’s their life support. Just being able to talk to other parents about what they are experiencing can make all the difference to their confidence about how they are bringing up their own children.”

local news Safety standards toughened As we approach Christmas toy sales it is good to know that two new standards introduced by ISO (the International Organisation for Standardization) aim to reduce the risk of a child being injured by unsafe equipment or dangerous substances. Millions of toys have been recalled around the world because of hazardous levels of lead or cadmium, choking hazards, dangerous magnets and other safety concerns, but now ISO 8124, the cornerstone of the global toy safety network, is determined to ensure the safety of children and minimize potential toy hazards. Like the idea of a tree nursery in your school? Do you think your children have green fingers? Why not encourage their school to join the School Tree Nursery Programme and find out. This new scheme, supported by the Earth Restoration Service, sends native tree saplings to schools all over the country, from which they can create their own small-scale tree nurseries. All of the children and teachers can get involved, and once the tree saplings reach the correct maturity the trees are planted out in the local community by the children. A fantastic way for your children to learn about horticulture, while doing their bit to save the planet. The scheme’s aim is to enroll 1000 schools in the UK this year, so why not get your school to join in at www.earthrestorationservice.org

Education news New school gains a new chairman

A wasted resource?

Radnor House, a new independent school opening in September 2011 in Twickenham, has announced that Dr Colin Diggory, recently retired Head of Alleyn’s School, Dulwich and former Head of Latymer Upper School, Hammersmith will join the school as the Chairman of the board. He will also take up a key advisory role at Radnor House, Radnor House bringing 34 years’ independent sector experience to his central role in the creation of the new 7-18, co-educational school. Dr Diggory, who has also taught at Manchester Grammar School, St Paul’s School and Merchant Taylors’ School, Northwood, will advise on all aspects of Radnor House’s strategy, from the curriculum, the culture and ethos of the school through to the recruitment strategy, to ensure that the very best staff are attracted to teach there. Dr Diggory is the latest addition to a highly experienced Senior Leadership Team, which includes Robert Cook, who brings a wealth of independent sector experience to the role of Head Master and David Paton, formerly Head of Sixth Form at Harrodian School, who will be Radnor House’s Deputy Head. Radnor House will focus on academic achievement complemented by a strong programme of the creative arts and sport. The ethos of ‘celebrating every individual’ will be central to the school’s approach, and there will be a broad and enriched curriculum. Radnor House is accepting applications from students aged 7 and above for the Preparatory School and from 11 to 15 for the secondary school. The Sixth Form at Radnor House will start in September 2013 to facilitate the first cohort of GCSE students who will start at the school next September. Parents wishing to learn more about the school can visit www.radnorhouse.org

Improving the education of the poorest Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has announced that £7bn will be spent over the next four years to improve the education of England's poorest children. This will include the provision of 15 hours of free pre-school education a week for some 130,000 disadvantaged two-year-olds, on top of those already available at ages three and four. But will more pre-schooling help our poorest children? Anand Shukla, acting chief executive of the Daycare Trust, a charity which has been campaigning for 25 years on the importance of investment in early years education, said the announcement was very welcome. "Spending in the early years can reap rewards in the longer term, especially for disadvantaged children,” he says. “Focusing the funding on really deprived two-year-olds can pay dividends." But Siobhan Freegard, founder of Netmums, disagrees. With a part-time nursery place costing as much as £120 a week, perhaps the money would be better spent on supporting parents. "We know there are massive gaps in the support for mums out there. Sending a child off to nursery is all very good but if the child then comes back to a situation where the mum isn't really coping, it's not going to be very helpful."

A new finding by the School Library Commission reveals that London’s school libraries are too often an underutilised resource, and that many libraries do not fulfill their potential to improve literacy levels or support pupil learning and attainment. The Commission’s report finds that while school

Holland Park School library libraries have a unique role in raising literary levels, promoting reading for pleasure and improving access to knowledge, in many schools it is wasted because it is poorly embedded in the infrastructure of the school and absent from school development plans. New National Literacy Trust research shows the importance of high performing school libraries for pupil attainment, and Sir Andrew Motion, former Poet Laureate and now Chair of Museums, Libraries and Archives Council says, “school libraries form an absolutely vital part of every child’s education, and it is essential that they are protected, expanded, diversified and enriched. They are nothing less than the rooms young people enter in order to discover the world.” Find out more at www.literacytrust.org.uk.

TV versus bedtime stories Many children are starting school having never been read a story. “Too many children are left to watch TV instead of being read a bedtime story,” says Pie Corbett, an educational advisor to the government. “This isn't just an economic thing, it's across the whole of society. You get a lot of children coming from very privileged backgrounds who've spent a lot of time in front of the TV and not enough time snuggled up with a good book. The TV does the imagining for you – and it doesn't care whether you're listening or not." Research shows that children who are read to on a regular basis are most likely to do well at school – being read to boosts language and develops creativity and imagination. “The best writers in the class are always those who are avid readers,” says Corbett. “Reading really matters.” So turn the TV off and pull out those fairytales – even singing nursery rhymes is good for your kids.

Simple tips for mums

Print-off Christmas scenes from Google images and have them near the table along with some coloured pencils. If the children get bored during Christmas lunch you can pull them out to gain an extra 10 minutes of peace.

Christmas crackers filled with small, fun toys are also great as the children will have fun playing with them at the table. Remember, posh, grown-up crackers with fancy pens and tie pins are great for those pre-Christmas dinner parties but not much fun for a bored three year-old that is expected to sit through a five course dinner; especially when the pace is dictated by nanny Gladys who only eats a mouthful once every five minutes!

Taking photos of the children opening their Christmas gifts make for the perfect centrepiece of a great thank you card. You can print-off multiple copies very cheaply, and these can be mounted on a piece of A4 card, folded in half. Younger children can scribble inside, while the older children can practice (and show off!) their handwriting skills!

Can we really handle too much technology? By David Shaw

One of the worst aspects of modern life is that we, as parents, do not always put down our phones, Blackberries and iPads when we talk to our children. This teaches them something. First, that we care more about our phones than we do about them and second, that it is OK to be on a screen all the time. At least, that's what Richard Watson, author of a new book, Future Minds claims. His main argument is that we need more time to develop deep thinking. We need downtime for our natural creativity to emerge and we need to switch the phones off, to re-build family life.

When we were younger, we could make up the rules as we went along. We could create fantasy games or make shapes out of clouds or change the rules if they did not suit the situation. Today's generation, taking entertainment from the TV or a computer game have less freedom in this respect. Richard noted, “That is what worries me about the generation we are bringing up now. We are putting them down these rails.”

Go out and kick a ball with your children

It's not just phones. Those of us with teenage boys will see them move from phone to Xbox to DSi to computer and back to their phone, spending hours at a time looking at a screen.

It is difficult, he agreed, with parents trying to hold down a job or possibly two, “but you have to set some rules; set some boundaries and I know it is easy to stick a video on and get some free childcare, but actually you should be out there kicking a ball. Get involved. Otherwise do not complain that they are not talking to you when they turn 18.”

Girls are no better: just different, using the computer to check the latest gossip on Facebook while simultaneously texting their friends. Or, increasingly, using the phone for both.

A second, and no less damaging aspect of the Facebook generation, said Richard, is that the consequences of making a mistake can be farreaching.

According to Richard, all this technology means, “We are getting better at thinking faster. We can make very quick decisions and we are getting increasingly adept at finding relevant information to support those decisions.” According to Richard, this and other aspects of the digital age are all good.

When everyone is connected and every child carries a camera in their hand, a stupid playground mistake might be uploaded to Youtube that evening, and by the next morning every classmate has seen it and commented on it and ridiculed the poor victim.

Take time to think and reflect

Children have committed suicide over this kind of incident, and even if suicide is not the outcome, self-esteem becomes the victim.

“The bad stuff,” he said, “is that I think we are losing the bigger picture; the ability to concentrate; to focus, to reflect and to do what I call deep thinking, which I think is the heart of scientific and artistic creativity.”

This, said Richard, makes children more riskaverse than previous generations.

Another aspect of this, he said, is that we have moved in the space of a generation away from it being commonplace for a child to leave the house, play in the park, climb a few trees and fall into the local pond and not return until dusk.

The thing, said Richard, “that marks out the sub-20 generation from everyone else is that they have grown up with this rapid technological change. They are connected. All their friends are connected and that network circulates information which competes with the information they hear from parents and teachers.”

Instead, most parents now do not let their children out of sight. Whether that is caused by fear of stranger danger, or concern about traffic levels, the result is that children are being kept indoors, where the parents think it is safer . Not only does this encourage the children to spend time in front of screens, but most of the activities available to them are based on predetermined set of rules.

December 2010

They are all connected all of the time

“Parents and teachers are losing the battle,” he said, adding that, “If you think of allowing a 14-year old full, uncensored access to the internet, that is quite a scary thought. You would never do that with a television or video games.”

A parent who gives a smartphone (such as an iPhone) to a 13-year old son should think how he will use it, said Richard, “I think there is a reasonable chance he will search for porn.” My absolute critical point, he added, is the fact that

“we have created this stuff which is fabulous on one level, but it has the potential to destroy the things which we value the most and that is human relationships and our sense of self.”

Break the pattern? Or give up? • This disconnect begins from the very earliest days. Most babies in the 1960s and 70s were transported in old-fashioned prams. Nowadays we have forward-facing buggies. The difference is that those old-fashioned prams have the child facing the adult, permitting conversations and eye contact, whereas buggies do not. • It continues into childhood where too-busy parents use the TV or games console or computer as a surrogate childcare. • At meal times, we do not sit down together and talk about the day; we use text messages and emails to communicate the basic information, but do not spend the time to talk and think. • It continues in the workplace and in shops, where increasingly we shop online or by using computer screens to remove the human contact from the process of shopping and banking. So what will you do? Give up? after all they all do it.... or fight for it? To our children’s despair we have banned ALL screen time from Monday to Thursday. I found it a good compromise that really does help, (although it is still a daily battle!) • Future Minds, by Richard Watson, 224 pp is published by Nicholas Brealey Publishing ISBN: 9781857885491 RRP 12.99 ®

Maggie’s treasure trove: SW20

Maggie O’Brien continues her search for the best things and places in SW London... this month SW20 West Wimbledon, SW20 can be a little overshadowed by its big sister in SW19. Residents reveal their best secrets. Wimbledon is famous mainly for tennis and for the Polka Theatre, each attracting hoards of visitors, but lately, things are changing and we now see a wealth of exciting businesses opening up adding to what has been an already busy yet understated community. I must mention the wonderful Lantern Arts Centre locally, it’s reknowned for both professional and amateur performances. There are many established shops and local buissnesses, like Maher’s Bakery and numerous activities for children that have been up and running for years. The fabulous new addition of Nicholas & Steele (Vintage products and Art School), that looks like it‘s been there forever! I have loved looking at what’s in the area for you and have talked to many local residents and visitors, adding their input. Whether it’s theatre or Zumba you are into, there is something for everyone, Go West and see for yourselves!

Hello Dolly December 8-11th

The Lantern Arts Centre “One play I saw recently, ‘An inspector calls’, was excellent and one of two of the major productions staged here annually”. Patricia Campbell, mother of 3. Sarah, mother of 3 and local to the area for over 20 years said, “I love this place, it’s where my girls both thoroughly enjoyed learning to sing, dance and act and I really think it helped my eldest to develop her future passion for drama.” Opportunities have been available for both children and adults since 1994 when it was first designated as an Arts venue. With an extensive list of activities to be involved in, either personally or going along to soak up some culture, there is no excuse to lack motivation. From Baby Boppers, a new initiative for younger children (2+) to Dance and Act for Fun; Lantern Singers, Children’s Theatre Club and Cafe studio (weekly performances on Fridays by various artists). The centre takes their productions into primary schools and also does very valuable work performing in hospices and hospitals. (See Further Information section for their website address.)

Gift remedies

Gift Remedies Having been recommended this gift shop by a group of local parents, I was delighted to find very inspirational choices on offer. After a present for my 8 year old nephew, I was rather taken by the retro car board game, which was then gift wrapped for free. There is a selection of unusual cards for all occasions and quirky present suggestions cram the shelves. It’s a great shop for a good browse or a ‘quick fix’ present. Karen Wirth, the owner who set it up 5 years ago, also runs Room Remedies nearby and once again offers the unusual, rather than the run of the mill department store bulk standard. In the family for many years in various guises and opening up in 2001 in its current form, Karen chooses furniture from the Victorian and Edwardian period. She says that she likes it for its style, its fabrication quality and its practicality. She also stocks a couple of new and contempory ranges, as well as mirrors chandeliers, lamp bases and much more.

Raynes Park Library The Bridge Children’s Centre at Raynes Park, West Wimbledon is a Sure Start scheme based at the library and all activities are free of charge. The Story and Song drop-in is a particular favourite (Tuesdays 44.30pm) as is Tiny Time (Thursdays 2-3.30pm). (Excellent timetable on Library website).

Nicholas & Steele Vintage shop

Nightingale Music Services Nicholas & Steele Art shop

Nicholas & Steele By contrast, this is a brand new addition to the area. Having scoured the country for premises, Holly Nicholas-Steele and her husband Steve, decided that actually the best place to set up both their wonderful vintage shop and the School of Art, was right where they had lived for the last 5 years, in the heart of Raynes Park, West Wimbledon. Their shop is packed with beautiful vintage tea sets, handmade cake stands and jelly moulds like your grandmother used to have. Things, that as Holly said, are heirloom gifts to pass down to your children. Toys that were made to reflect a ‘make and do’ era. There are gorgeous baby blankets, hand knitted by local pensioners and an assortment of delightful charm bracelets, put together by Holly and these are just some of my favourite things! Also very exciting is Holly’s background: she trained as an Art teacher in South Africa, moved on to become the Head of Art at the Hall school in Wimbledon, then once she had set up and established her shop in Wimbledon Village, she decided to expand the arty part of the business. She and Steve have set up a studio in the premises at the back of the shop. “I provide young creative souls with a platform to express themselves and their creativity in a relaxed environment”, says Holly. There are after school clubs for children aged 6-12 years, and all sorts of Children’s holiday activities including a Christmas holiday fun craft club. Saturday craft clubs and parties are also planned. There are Adult classes too, so get along and develop your creative side.

As I write this, a new and I know excellent music service, is being put together. With a combined experience of over 20 years in music performance, flautist Marlene Verwey and pianist Anne Marshall can provide world class musicians for every requirement: charity concerts, private and corporate events as well as outstanding private tuition (piano, flute and voice lessons, theory tuition) offered by themselves, both in West Wimbledon and Putney. “I’ve been learning the piano with Marlene, she’s so encouraging and really helps me”, says Maddie, 12. An exciting and novel idea. “They will be brilliant”, says Louise, mother of 2 girls, her youngest having being taught by Marlene for some years now.

Maher and Sons bakery This has been a family run business for over 37 years, offering both a friendly service within the shop or via delivery. There is a vast range of baked breads, cakes, pastries and scones as well as sandwiches, homemade quiches and a favourite with some of the regulars, delicious filled (but healthy), jacket potatoes. Elly Keevil, mother of 3, said, “This is a brilliant place to come with young children, the food is tasty and homemade”. Sarah Vardy, a new mother, said, “It is very baby friendly”. The staff are accommodating and there is a children’s area inside where they are made to feel welcome; tiny little bite-size cakes are a favourite with small children and such a good idea.

Shopping locally… can be a real Christmas experience By Kate Birch

Sometimes nothing beats the big toy store experience. A trip into town to see the Christmas lights and the whole magic that is Hamleys is a rare treat. Families Gift Guide by Holly Wadsworth-Hill

The nights have drawn in, there’s a magical feel to the chill in the air and there’s more than one kind of wrapping-up on everyone’s mind. It can only mean one thing... Christmas is on its way! Whether that fills you with ho, ho, ho’s or Scrooge-like groans, we hope this fun-filled guide to all things festive, will help make this year a Christmas to remember...

It’s the thought that counts... Recent economic difficulties have triggered a new dawn of consumerism. Many of us are now concentrating on quality purchases that will stand the test of time. Nostalgia has unveiled tradition as the new vogue and whilst the latest crazes and popular characters certainly have their place, children are arguably more demanding and harder to please than ever before. There’s a reason why some of the old favourites are resurfacing and proving their worth to a new generation of inquisitive minds. Children like to be entertained but they thrive on interaction, they will happily watch but they learn quicker from doing, they benefit from competition but they enjoy team work. Classic toys are all this and much more and they really do have timeless appeal. With that in mind this year, why not focus on something they will love this Christmas but will treasure for many more to come...

A Hamleys tale... Stuck on the basics or searching for finishing touches? Take inspiration from the world’s most famous toy store this year. Hamleys was established by Cornishman, William Hamley, in London, in 1760 which of course is 250 years ago. Today it remains the world’s most wonderful toy shop, synonymous with theatre, magic and entertainment; add a mince pie or two and you’ve got all the ingredients for a perfect Christmas!

Baby’s first Christmas Latest additions may be slightly oblivious to the seasonal chaos but you’ll remember their first Christmas forever and will be keen to make it extra special. Nothing says ‘I love you’ like a keepsake or something they can cherish for years to come.

My First Dolly £19 My First Dolly will be loved by all. She is so squeezably soft that little arms will adore snuggling up to her. Dressed beautifully, she has wild hair that little hands will love to touch and tug!

Alphabet Blocks £17 Painted with bright colours, clear letters and imaginative illustrations these wooden blocks can help little children when learning letters, colours and much more besides.

T is for trouble and toddlers! Busy little hands are into all things naughty as well as nice, so classic toys should be at the top of the list. The educational benefits and development of imagination and play skills from these toys are extensive but cleverly masked behind the colour, fun and excitement that toddlers crave.

It’s all about quality time... ‘Tis the season to spend with your loved ones: keep things merry with fun and games for the whole family. Games Chest £60 Enjoy a gaming adventure with this classic wooden gaming chest. Open the sliding drawers to reveal a smorgasbord of fun with 10 of the world's greatest games! Includes chess, mancala, backgammon, solitaire, tic-tactoe and lots more to keep the very young and most experienced young-at-heart entertained!

Mum and baby page

Time to u n w i n d The cold winter weather can leave you feeling a little flat. There are many ways to boost your mood and calm your mind so you feel cosy and comforted. 1. pregnancy massage – many mums-to-be stop having treatments due to fears that it may ‘harm’ their baby. Massage in fact helps your breathing, circulation and muscle tone and provides a sense of calm often like no other therapy – all completely beneficial to you and your developing baby! breathing – slower, deeper breaths will help you feel more calm and grounded and send richer oxygenated blood through the placenta to give your baby a boost. Slow you breathing and notice your baby doing cartwheels! 2. positive affirmations – we can all listen to negative stories that connect to our inner fears but by repeating daily “feel good” messages to yourself such as “I am calm, centred and strong” will help you re-train your thoughts and feel more confident 3. music – be it Beethoven or Bublé, whatever helps you feel good and relax will benefit you both 4. drinking tea – herbal teas are packed with nutrients and ingredients to soothe, stimulate and refresh. Mint is commonly used to settle the digestion, nettle is high in iron and great for itchy skin and melissa or lemonbalm can help fluctuating moods. Raspberry Leaf tea is recommended from 35 weeks to tone and strengthen the smooth muscles of the uterus, helping labour contractions become more efficient. Lisa Barnwell is the Founder & Director of Me & My Baby Therapy Clinic. Yoga. Pilates, a dedicated clinic for mums, bumps and babies. She is qualified in Swedish and Deep Tissue Massage, Aromatherapy, Acupressure in Pregnancy and Labour, Maternity Reflexology, BabyReflex and Baby Massage. Her Signature Pregnancy Massage has been chosen by Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their private maternity clients. This month sees the launch of “Winter Treatments at Home”, a new service for mums and mums-to-be and a perfect Christmas Gift. Last year over 1.5 tonnes of grapes were collected and made into 1,000 bottles of ‘Chateau Tooting’ – London’s very own local wine. For £65, this Christmas you can give your budding vignerons a mini-vineyard from the grow-your-own experts at ‘The Gluttonous Gardener’. Each gift is packed by hand with your personal message, welcoming the new member, with expert vine care advice and invitations to member-only events. Join our editor, Pascale, and writer, Kate, in their competition to plant and pick the most grapes!? www.urbanwineco.com

Dolphin Dreamtime CD An imaginary journey with sounds and music £11.50 from www.idw.org or idw@talk21.com (do also consider getting one of the dolphin DVDs!) Dolphin Dreamtime was created after hearing people tell of the benefits received from encounters with wild dolphins. Be led into a cave and through the various nature kingdoms into the dolphin’s environment: many people report they go into deeper relaxation than with other techniques. You will have heard about swimming with dolphins and its healing powers, but do you know why? Dolphin dreamtime is used in hospitals, prisons, by stress management consultants, women in labour, with children with ADD, ADHD or autistic or simply to relax after a busy day. Dr Horace Dobbs set up a bold and imaginative research project called Operation Sunflower to investigate the healing power of dolphins. Learn more on the website. I feel an article coming on, don’t you? …

Slightly Invisible By Lauren Child Published by Orchard Books RRP £10.99 Hardback ISBN 978-1-40830-790-8 Charlie and his friend Marv are in search of strange and tricky creatures which they would like to do without Lola bothering and interrupting them at every opportunity. Luckily, Lola knows exactly how to catch strange and tricky creatures and enlists a bit of help from her invisible friend, Soren Lorensen, along with a few glasses of her favourite pink milk. This is Lauren Child at her best. An amusing story teamed together with her fantastic quirky pictures of Charlie and his little sister on one of their frequent adventures. My children loved being just able to see the invisible Soren Lorensen and it really got their imaginations going – they are now requesting a whole host of things for their invisible friends. The much-anticipated return of the hugely loved brother and sister team will bring a great number of smiles to a multitude of children this Christmas. Families rating: 5 out of 6

The Big Bottom Hunt

This book introduces us to Douglas who is due to appear in a number of forthcoming Hodder titles and will no doubt become a hit as he is such a lovable character.

From ”You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” to “There’s life in the old dog yet”!

Douglas is a big brown, huggable bear, who wakes up one morning in need of a hug. He sets out to find one and tries to hug just about everything in sight but some of these hugs just don’t seem right: too big; too small; too heavy; or even too busy. Finally he is led to a cave where he finds his mother and she gives him the most perfect and warmest hug that he could possibly imagine – exactly the sort of hug that he had been after all day long. This heart-warming story of Douglas's quest for the perfect hug makes a perfect tale to share with little ones. Make sure you give them a big hug at the end...

The Young Pups are reluctant to visit their grandfather as they think he’s really boring and only talks about the olden days. But when they do visit him, he becomes fed up of their rudeness and being under-estimated and unappreciated. So he surprises them with tales of running away to join the circus and shows them he still knows a few tricks – such as juggling eggs on a bike whilst blindfolded. This is a wry and warm book, accompanied by very funny illustrations, about the perils of underestimating old people. Old Dog is a heart-warming and amusing tale, although it contains a surprising number of dog-related puns and sayings which may go over the heads of many small children.

By Lari Don and Gabby Grant Published by Picture Kelpies RRP £5.99 Paperback ISBN 978-086315-745-5 When Sandy and Ella find a telescope on the beach, they are determined to find its owner. But the only clue they have is a bottom print left in the sand. So what’s a child to do? Of course, they must go round the town looking at people’s bottoms and try to make a match. Of course, this is a highly amusing concept for those very many small children obsessed with bottoms! However, although my family enjoyed reading it the first time, we didn’t love it enough to want to read it again and again. Although it’s a funny and cheeky idea which appeals to children, the actual writing didn’t quite capture the comedy potential of the idea, and with rather flat illustrations, it didn’t have the magic to make it a classic. However, children will like the fact that the word bottom is repeated many times!

Aunt Severe and the Dragons

A Calf for Christmas

Witches at War!: The White Wand

Put Out the Light

By Nick Garlick. Illustrated by Nick Maland Published by Andersen Press Ltd RRP £4.99 Paperback ISBN 184939055X When Daniel’s explorer parents vanish, he is forced to live with his strict and rather strange Aunt Severe. Aunt Severe takes his toys away, feeds him cold spinach sandwiches and makes him collect rubbish. His problems only get more complicated when he finds four lost dragons hiding in her garden. Daniel wants to help the talking dragons but before he can do anything three of them are captured by mean Gotcha Grabber for his zoo. This leaves Daniel with the fourth dragon (the not so-seemingly clever one) to rescue them. This is a great little chapter book to share with younger children. The storyline, which is highly imaginary, flows well with simple cliffhangers at the end of each short chapter. It is an easy and compulsive read with a few supporting pen and ink illustrations. The story touches on how perseverance wins the day and that everyone is capable of something good. Families rating: 6 out of 6

By Astrid Lindgren. Illustrated by Marit Tornqvist Published by Floris Books RRP £9.99 Hardback ISBN 0863157858 You may remember the author’s name for her most famous book – Pippi Longstocking. This latest Christmas story is set in a traditional Swedish farming community and is about a boy called Johan. Johan and his family are distraught as their only cow, Emma, has died and they are too poor to buy another. Meanwhile, Peter Jonsson, a rich farmer, comes to town to collect his new calf. He spends too long in the tavern, gets inebriated and ends up losing the calf in the snow on the way home. That evening Johan is shovelling snow and comes across a calf stranded in the snow. Johan’s father believes he knows who the owner is and goes to return the calf with happy consequences.

Only a wand of equal power can thwart her so, with very different motives, Sam and Esmelia set off for Egypt. The race is on to create a new wand and battle against Diabolica with only a few ancient witches and some beetles to help them.

The story covers the old belief that something good can result from something bad. It is supported by beautiful watercolours of rural Swedish scenes in the winter.

Sam, the talented apprentice to warty old witch Esmelia Sniff, discovers that the head witch has been turned into a frog by rival Diabolica using the famous Black Wand of Ohh Please Don’t Turn Me Into Aaaargggh… Ribbett. Diabolica now plans to take over the world with a zombie army.

An action packed and enormously funny book, The White Wand is second in a series and leaves you wanting to read more. It is equally appealing to girls and boys who would appreciate the horrible details of witches’ lives and fast-paced humorous storyline.

By Terry Deary Published by A & C Black RRP £5.99 Paperback ISBN 978-1408130544 Autumn 1940: Billy and Sally live in Sheffield, where bombs have not yet reached but air raid warnings and uncertainty are increasing. Policeman’s children, they appoint themselves detectives to catch a thief taking advantage of air raids, but end up being suspected themselves. Meanwhile in Dachau, Manfred wants Germany to win but is shocked at the treatment of Polish ‘under-human’ Irena. Even though threatened with execution for disloyalty he plans to put someone’s name on a bomb to help win the war, and perhaps help Irena too. An interesting book from Terry Deary, best known for Horrible Histories, that interweaves stories of children and pilots in Sheffield and Dachau with realistic details of everyday wartime life on both sides of the war at the beginning of the 1940 blitz. My war-obsessed son really enjoyed the parallel stories.
