A trio of tigers ZSL London Zoo welcomes a trio of tiger cubs as three critically endangered Sumatran tigers are born at Tiger Territory. The triplets of the world’s rarest tigers have had their first moments captured on hidden cameras by zookeepers. ‘We couldn’t be more delighted with our new arrivals, and with how their mother Melati is responding to her cubs,’ said zookeeper Teague Stubbington. ‘We’ve been observing them 24/7. We’ve even been able to observe key milestones like their eyes opening and their tentative first steps.’ With wild Sumatran tiger numbers estimated to be as low as 300, the cubs represent a huge achievement not just for ZSL London Zoo but for the global breeding programme. www.zsl.org

Powerful therapy Craniosacral therapy comes to Wimbledon Village this spring with a new clinic for mothers and babies. Local therapist Tania Gallindo has opened the Low Cost Craniosacral Therapy Clinic, which specialises in pregnancy, babies and children. ‘As a baby massage teacher and craniosacral therapist I see many mothers, babies and children that would benefit from craniosacral treatments,’ says Tania, ‘however many parents cannot afford a £60-£80 fee per hour. A home for toads New shallow pools have been created on Tooting Common this spring to provide a home for frogs, toads and newts. The council is working in partnership with Froglife along with Friends of Tooting Common to build three pools in the common’s existing ecology pond. Once the pools are established local volunteers will be offered training to help monitor them, to see if they have been successful in improving the habitat for local wildlife. What a great idea! ‘The common is very popular with local people, and we manage it to preserve as many of the natural features and rich ecology as possible,’ said the council’s environment spokesman Jonathan Cook. ‘As well as helping local amphibian populations flourish, we hope these new ponds will get more local people involved in monitoring the common and its wildlife, and teach people how to take care of our precious open spaces.’ www.wandsworth.gov.uk/tootingcommon

Library reopens

This May sees the return of National Share-A-Story Month, an annual celebration of the power of storytelling and story sharing. Run by the Federation of Children’s Book Groups, Share-A-Story Month is a fantastic opportunity to bring children and stories together, with a whole host of events running across the country. The theme for 2014 is ‘Imagination and Inventiveness’, celebrating with Dahl & Dahl and Puffin Publishers the 50th Anniversary of the publication of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The iconic Streatham Tate Library reopened recently after an extensive restoration project. The library, bequeathed to the people of Streatham by Sir Henry Tate, reopened its doors with a waft of fresh paint and a whole range of new books, information, services and community space. Not only has the library been restored to its former glory, including the reclamation of a barrel ceiling and a magnificent skylight, it now also has a fabulous community space, Streatham Tate Centre, in which to host events from theatre productions to art exhibitions and other community projects. Live the dream World class athlete and Olympic medalist Jamie Baulch has inspired pupils at Thames Christian College, Battersea this spring, when he spoke about how he started as a runner as an 11 year old, how he pursued his dream of being world champion and the pitfalls along the way. Pupils especially enjoyed seeing the silver medal he won for the 4x400m relay at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. ‘I was very encouraged by what Jamie Baulch had to say,’ said Thames pupil Matthieu Chung, who felt motivated in his ambition to be a pianist and gain a place at the Royal Academy of Music. ‘It has taught me that there will be many failures in life but it is these challenges that enable you to go on to achieve your goals. Gymnastics champs Hornsby House School are crowned U11 national gymnastics champions as the team triumphs in their first major competition - the British Schools Gymnastics Association Milano Team Trio event.

The team members received gold medals and were presented with the prestigious shield, which will be displayed at Hornsby House for the coming year. Their gold medal performance at these national finals followed their win at the London regional BSGA event in December. ‘Gymnastics is very popular at Hornsby House and the children love developing their skills in the after school gymnastics clubs,’ said Emma Evans, PE Teacher.

Healthy cooking lessons at Lion House Each Thursday after school at Lion House school children from the Pre-preparatory attend a cooking club run by the formidable school cook, Tracey King. Mothers club London Mothers Club is an events club for mums which organizes small and large events in different locations around London. They have been operating for just under two years now and have several brilliant events under their belt. In April

Driven to distraction Research shows that children are 12 times more likely to be a distraction to drivers than mobile phones. It’s hard to avoid turning round and glancing in the rear view mirror if you are distracted by the sound of children crying, squabbling, shouting or talking to you. Yet apparently 95% of all crashes are attributed to this type of behaviour, rather than technical driving errors, meaning that those driving with children are at far greater risk of accident.

The majority of nannies now drive as part of their role, and face the same pressures as parents.

Pregnancy discrimination By the Prolegal Employment team

The Equality Act 2010 protects women from unfavourable treatment because of pregnancy, pregnancy related illness or maternity leave but, according to campaigning organisation www.maternityaction.org.uk, 60,000 women lose their jobs because of pregnancy or maternity discrimination every year.

Employers sometimes object to the number or timing of ante natal appointments but there is a right to paid leave: you should not be asked to make up the time or to rearrange appointments outside office hours.

Absence policies should not be applied to women with pregnancy related illnesses unless this is to assist her. For example, an employer might refer her to Occupational Health to consider whether any adjustments might enable her to return to work. This does not stop women being disciplined or even dismissed because they have taken time off with pregnancy related illness.

Even outright pregnancy discrimination is still common: employers’ attitudes towards women change once they announce their pregnancy, with an assumption that she is no longer committed to her work, won’t return after her maternity leave or will only want to work part time. Performance concerns are brought up or the role is said to be redundant. Women also experience problems when they try to return to work after maternity leave. They find their position has been filled and their services are no longer needed. Maternity leave must not play a part in any decision that a role is redundant. Any selection process should not take account of absences for maternity, ante natal appointments or pregnancy related illness. If a woman has been replaced during maternity leave, the role is not redundant and it is unlawful to dismiss. If the role is genuinely redundant, she has priority for any suitable alternative vacancies.

I advise anyone experiencing discrimination to send an email setting out the problem so that there is written evidence of the first complaint. Get in touch with HR as well as speaking to your line manager, or manager’s manager if they are the problem. If that doesn’t work, raise a formal grievance.

If you can’t reach a solution, it’s imperative to get legal advice as soon as possible. There is a 3 month time limit to bring Employment Tribunal claims for discrimination. If you wait, you may lose your right to bring a claim.

Neighbourhood Midwives’ first year Last year, we introduced you to a new midwifery service in the area, Neighbourhood Midwives. This fully insured private service offers full continuity of care from a midwife you know and trust, something that is a bit of a rarity in today’s maternity services.

We asked Annie Francis, their CEO how things are going “We now have 10 midwives covering all of London and beyond. We have had over 40 births, including home births, hospital births, water births and twin births…all of these women have one thing in common, they have all been cared for and supported by a midwife they know and trust and with whom they have developed a close and trusting relationship. One woman said her midwives were ‘her epidural, she needed nothing else.’

This model of care helps ensure a good experience for women and the evidence also shows that it leads to good outcomes for mothers and babies. But is also lovely for the midwives. Tina Perridge, one of the founders of Neighbourhood Midwives has worked this way for 16 years and has seen some women through 4 births: ‘The relationship you build up is so precious, we feel like friends and trust each other totally. I see the children grow up and can share in the life of the family. I feel very fortunate.’

The Neighbourhood Midwives themselves are very active in their communities, running drop-ins, coffee mornings and immersing themselves in local networks of other health providers and therapists etc.

Some women may not be aware of this service or think that it is only available for those who opt out of the NHS but Neighbourhood Midwives offer a top up service which compliments NHS care and is available now for women who want a midwife they know and trust.

Vitamin D and the return of rickets A significant proportion of people in the UK probably have inadequate levels of vitamin D in their blood. Commenting on the return of childhood rickets to the UK, the government’s chief medical officer Professor Dame Sally Davies has noted that as many as 40% of young children may have levels below the accepted optimal vitamin D threshold.

Vitamin D deficiency causes rickets, where developing bones soften, which can lead to bowed legs and curvature of the spine. It is easily prevented by exposure to sunlight several times a week without wearing sun cream, as well as a balanced diet that includes plenty of vitamin D and calcium.

An effective alternative is supplementing the diet with tablets, capsules or vitamin drops.

WIFI danger? finally you are listening!

Families South West has been campaigning for years to alert mothers to the possible danger of WIFI exposure.

Jessica Burn, from Wimbledon, wrote to us: “In your April issue you covered the danger of WIFI around children. I looked on your site and other places you recommended. I listened to the video of the GP who says he has seen sick children get better after WIFI was removed at home; I did my research and concluded that this is a huge issue that mothers need to be aware of. I have spoken with dozens of people: my cranial osteopath, my friend who practices reiki and other therapists, bizarrely they ALL agree it is very big problem we have to be aware of! So why didn’t I know about this?

I have now discovered something else: did you know that smart meters are being introduced and people do not realise it is basically more WIFI in our homes?

The effect on our blood is shocking. Mums don’t be complacent, protect your children NOW, don’t turn a blind eye, don’t ignore this issue, you can’t trust anybody but yourself these days!

Ideas of indoor fun to try at home We all know that too much time in front of the games console or TV can have a negative impact on our children, but it’s hard to keep thinking up new things for them to do when it’s raining outside and you’ve done all the puzzles in the house. Nikki van Rensburg is an occupational therapist at local practice Children’s Therapies, and she’s come up with some great ideas for indoor play to exercise both bodies and brains.

Indoor hopscotch Bring the playground indoors and create your own Hopscotch game.

Use chalk if you have a hard floor, masking tape on a carpet, or sheets of paper placed on the floor with the numbers drawn on them. The image shows what the grid should look like, Google the rules or make up your own!

Good for – co-ordination, taking turns, numeracy, motor planning, bilateral integration (using the two sides of the body together)

Hide and seek

An old favourite, but all children love this game, even the older ones who can play in the dark for a bit of extra excitement as long as there aren’t any obstacles lying around on the floor. Little ones can stay surprisingly still and quiet if it means getting one up on the bigger ones, and they can fit into smaller spaces. Tip if you’re joining in – long curtains make a great hiding place.

Treasure hunt

Even if you don’t have much space, you can write clues that send children backwards and forwards between the same rooms many times, making the clues as easy or difficult as needed. Hide scraps of paper inside books, with riddles they have to solve to find the next book containing a clue. Older children can make up their own clues if you give them a bit of help to get them going.

Good for - problem solving, teamwork

Baking, or preparing a simple meal, is a great way to keep children busy and develop an important skill. You can look up recipes suitable for children online if you need inspiration, but chocolate chip cookies and cupcakes always go down well, and are fun to decorate afterwards. Little ones can help you prepare the teatime meal, weighing and counting ingredients, mixing, and setting the table.

Good for – following instructions, creativity, fine motor coordination and strength

Make your own board game All you need for this is paper, a ruler and pens.

Draw out squares for a Snakes and Ladders board but replace the snakes and ladders with inventive methods of sending the counters up and down.

Get creative with drawing alternative Ludo boards, or encourage older children to be really creative and make up their own game with instructions and playing pieces.

Good for – creativity, fine motor skills

Pretend play with cardboard boxes This is one of the simplest ways to keep young children occupied and entertained. Give them a big cardboard box or two and it’s guaranteed to fire up their imagination. The possibilities for pretend play are endless – a house, space ship, boat, tunnel, cave. Take it a step further and decorate the box, adding on cardboard tube chimneys or exhaust pipe.

Good for – imaginative play, creativity

Freeze dance

When they really need to let off steam, put on some good dancing music and encourage them to dance their hearts out. You can also introduce aerobic exercises such as star jumps, and little ones especially love it when you shout ‘freeze!’ and they have to keep stock still until the music starts again.

Good for – physical exercise, selfexpression, strengthening (holding still positions can be challenging!)

Make a theatre in a box Turn a shoebox on its side, and make slits in the sides and top. Draw characters or cut out from a magazine, stick onto card, and glue to ice-lolly sticks, plastic straws or strips of thick cardboard, which you can use to slide them across the ‘stage’ through the slits in the sides of the box. Older children can make backdrops to insert through the slits in the top, decorated with different scenes, or even fabric curtains attached to a piece of string along the top. And of course you can take it a step further and get them to write their own plays.

Good for – creativity, imagination, fine motor skills

9 Hula-hoops Hula-hoops are inexpensive and a great way to exercise indoors but you will need a bit more room. Time children to see how long they can keep going. Energetic music will encourage them to put more effort in and go faster. They can also use the hula-hoop as a target on the floor for throwing a soft ball into to score points, gradually moving it further away.

Good for – physical exercise, gross motor skills, motor planning, ball skills in general

Keepy-uppy with a twist This is a great activity for little ones to play on their own, or with you. Use a balloon instead of a ball and either take turns to bat the balloon away before it touches the ground, or make it more challenging by introducing different moves that have to be completed before the balloon comes back down, eg touch your toes, then touch your toes and turn around once, adding an extra move each time.

Carbon monoxide kills Have you got a carbon monoxide detector yet? If not, make sure you get one now. Lucy, who tragically lost her 7-year-old child to carbon monoxide poisoning, campaigns for parents to install CO detectors in their homes. A few months ago she told her good friend Christine, a mum of 4, to install one in her house as soon as possible. Christine took Lucy up on her advice and only days after she got a detector installed, it went off thereby most probably saving her family!

Now, a charity is calling for the introduction of public health warnings about the gas, as it is not only odourless and colourless but can kill in seconds. ‘Being a deadly gas which cannot be sensed by smell, taste, touch or hearing, it is vital that people are aware of the dangers and know the steps to take to reduce their risk of being poisoned,’ said Stephanie Trotter, president of CO-Gas Safety. ‘That is why we are calling for public warnings to be introduced, to advise families of the dangers and how to protect themselves.’

Pollen contaminated with toxic pesticides On 17th April Greenpeace released a new report, Bees Burden, revealing the shocking result that pollen collected by bees is contaminated with a cocktail of toxic pesticides: the analysis of pesticide residues trapped pollen from honey bees is the largest of its kind in Europe, in total 53 different chemicals were detected.

The study is a snapshot of the toxicity of Europe’s current agricultural system. It demonstrates the high concentrations and wide range of fungicides found in pollen collected.

Ethan loves football. He’s midfield for Lee Rangers, and follows his dad’s team, Sheffield Wednesday. He is 7 ¼ and likes playing (and squabbling) with his siblings- Evie, five and Zac, two. He likes ice cream, Star Wars and Lego. He dislikes spiders and cabbage, and he’s dubious about physiotherapy. A normal lively little boy, but also very special - one in 2,500.

He has Cystic Fibrosis (CF).

A life long illness With Ethan finally home, we began his life-long treatment. Initially the physiotherapy involved clapping a wriggling baby on his back twice a day, which was quite challenging! Now it involves using a PEP mask to exercise his lungs, blowing exercises and a mucus-thinning nebulising treatment. Ethan is extremely active and swims regularly. Exercise helps to keep his lungs clear from excessive thick, sticky mucous which could otherwise clog them. He accepts that his strict after-school treatment regime is necessary for him to stay healthy. We are very honest with him.

There is never a day off, whether it’s his birthday, Christmas, or on holiday.

ince his diagnosis at two days old, Ethan has had a strict daily treatment regime, including ‘physio’. Ethan was born with a blocked bowel (meconium ileus), which affects 10 – 15% of babies with CF. Needing two laparoscopies in his first week, he spent three and half weeks in the neonatal unit. It came as a terrible shock to us, we had absolutely no idea that there was anything wrong. It completely rocked our world. He was our first baby and we felt so helpless. We loved him dearly and were determined to keep him well.

Doctors told us that, like 2.5 million other people in the UK, we are both carriers of a faulty gene and that Ethan had inherited this gene from us both. There was a 1 in 4 chance of each and every further baby having Cystic Fibrosis. Thankfully Evie and Zac are free from it.

Ethan must also take enzyme tablets- Creon- with every meal. Without them he couldn’t digest his food and would fail to thrive. He has to eat more high calorie food than other children to maintain weight. He is the envy of his class when he pulls out his chocolate biscuit at snack time! He attends regular specialist hospital clinics, where they monitor height, weight, lung function and diet.

The care is phenomenal. We have complete faith that the team want the best for Ethan as much as we do.

Every day life is challenging Ethan enjoys school. The teachers are so supportive. They make sure Ethan takes his tablets and eats and drinks lots. They recently held a charity day when everyone came to school dressed in their favourite colour and Ethan talked to the children about his condition.

Cystic fibrosis dominates and changes family life for everyone. It’s hard to juggle the needs of three children. Although busy, we also try to raise money for charity—our way of helping Ethan and others. We are hastening the day when the condition is no longer life-limiting.

We must have hope.

Fifty years of research Fifty years ago, frail children invariably attended special schools. Now they look well. It’s hard to believe they have such a serious condition. But they remain very susceptible to infections. This is my constant fear. All children get colds, but with Ethan I worry that they will go to his chest. Minor bugs can develop into serious respiratory illness.

CF children are treated rigorously with antibiotics, sometimes intravenously. They are not allowed to mix with other CF kids, in case they pass each other infections. Consequently it’s not easy to meet other CF mums.

Initially I felt very isolated. Ethan’s hospital has been great at introducing me to other families locally and through this and the local CF group I have made some great friendships. We all fight together for a better future.

What is Cystic Fibrosis?

Cystic Fibrosis is a life threatening disease affecting the lungs and digestive system and affecting over 10000 in the UK .

This year it is the 50th Anniversary of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Founded in 1964, the trust aims to: * Research a cure: The CF gene was identified in 1989. Gene therapy clinical trials are in progress. Although life expectancy has improved greatly, many lives are lost prematurely. Despite great progress, Cystic Fibrosis is not yet beaten. * Facilitate early diagnosis: Since 2007, CF testing has been included in the routine heel prick test for all new born babies. * Support patients and families: The Trust has funded research at Southampton and Portsmouth Universities and clinical care and training for health professionals. * For advice and support, ring the helpline 0300 373 1000. www.cysticfibrosis.org.uk

10 tips for holidaying with friends

There are many benefits to holidaying with friends such as shared costs, larger properties, friends on tap for the kids, joint childcare opportunities and a guaranteed social life. But there are many potential pitfalls too which could affect your friendship and even your marriage…

After many holidays with friends and family we think these are the 10 essential tips for a successful joint family holiday.

1.

Discuss potential pitfalls before you book your holiday so there are no awkward surprises.

Beaches or Museums? Kids Clubs or quality family time? Expensive guided excursions or free nature walks? Everyone has a different idea of the perfect family holiday, and that’s fine, just ensure your expectations and your daily budgets are discussed ahead of time so there’s no embarrassment or arguments.

2.

Agree price brackets for meals out together beforehand.

Nobody likes being pressured into eating where they’d prefer not to. If you can’t agree, don’t compromise: you’ll be happier if you go your separate ways to dine and hook back up afterwards. You can always blame the kids (or husband…) for not liking X, Y or Z.

3.

Ensure you ring fence some quality family time alone.

Ensure you make time for just your family. Make sure you get to go exactly where you want, do what you want to do and when you want to do it. This also gives you time to chat together, let off steam and release any inter-familial tension that may have developed.

4.

Separate vehicles are essential.

Never be tempted to share a people carrier or minivan with another family. You need your space. And an escape plan (even if it’s only temporary).

5.

Some boundaries must be agreed on and stuck to.

Obviously presenting an entire rule book to the other family might not be a good idea, so choose your battles carefully. If your kids meal times are sacrosanct, then say so and plan accordingly. If you hate being woken up at 4.00 a.m then lay down the law… It’s your holiday.

6.

Don’t interfere in the other marriage.

Don’t show any disapproval of the other couple’s divisions of labour or parenting techniques.

Unless it directly affects you or your family’s holiday then it’s none of your business. (Until you return home of course).

7.

Rent a property with as many bathrooms as you can afford.

You think your spouse takes ages…you might be surprised by other husbands/children etc too.
