Ramblers put London on the map This autumn a new campaign is being launched by the Ramblers, Britain’s walking charity, to highlight the myriad of London’s walkways, including the popular Thames Path, that are under threat by massive development. ‘Putting London on the map’ urges councils of inner London Boroughs to safeguard the city’s historic footpaths before the ability to explore London on foot is lost forever, by creating a definitive map of London’s footpaths. Backed by Janet Street-Porter and Turner Prize winner Grayson Perry, the Ramblers campaign says, “We want London’s historic and well-loved footpaths to be safeguarded just like our iconic buildings. Not only are our footpaths a crucial part of London’s heritage but they are also a vital service enabling people to get from A to B.” For more information visit www.ramblers.org.uk/Campaigns+Policy/map London.

Posture for tots Joseph Pilates hoped that one day an older generation would bring awareness of the consequences of bad posture on health to a younger generation so as to create a healthy happier population. Local pilates teacher Zoe Ewart has made it her mission to bring postural awareness into children’s lives so they grow into well balanced bodies, avoiding the problems of future bad backs, digestive and respiratory problems and sleep troubles. Her classes are specifically targeted at 8 to 17 year olds and are held at Brockwell Lido on Wednesdays and Fridays at 5.45pm. Find out more at www.pilateens.com

Walk in the Park in the dark..... 2010 sees the fifth year of Syon Park’s Enchanted Woodland, a magical event which sees an illuminated trail laid out through the Gardens and Arboretum of Syon. As the path winds around the eighteenth century lake, a range of exciting lighting effects bring the landscape to life in a whole new way. The shapes and textures of Syon’s fine old trees are thrown into sharp contrast against the night sky, or reflected in the mirror of the lake before the route culminates at the magnificent Great Conservatory. A unique and magical event for young and old alike. The event is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night from 19th November to 5th December 2010, Gates open at 5pm, with last admission at 8pm. Adults £5, children £2. Food and refreshments will be available every night. For more information and pictures of last year’s event, please go to www.syonpark.co.uk

New Helpline from Tommy’s This autumn Tommy’s, the baby charity, is launching a midwife-staffed freephone PregnancyLine. With the help of funding from an ASDA foundation grant, PregnancyLine will focus on providing emotional and bereavement counseling support for women who have suffered a pregnancy loss or complication through premature birth, miscarriage or stillbirth, as well as offering advice on how best to plan for a baby following a complication, and lifestyle advice for women most at risk of pregnancy health problems due to smoking, stress, poor diet or obesity. The grant will also fund a training programme for Tommy’s midwives, focusing on these areas. Jacqui Clinton, Health Campaigns Manager at Tommy’s, says: “Tommy’s information line has always provided vital support for many mums-to-be, however with the PregnancyLine we can now specifically help women whom have suffered pregnancy complications in the past and want to try for another baby, or need guidance in terms of healthy lifestyle choices.” PregnancyLine 0800 0147 800. www.tommys.org

Frame their art South West London family portrait photographers Parklife, run by mum of 3, Annabel Bennett and her brother Phil Wilson, have recently created a new concept – kids artwork montage. Whilst having a clear out Annabel discovered a huge stash of colourful pictures brought home by her kids over the years. Unable to display or even keep them all, Annabel and her brother came up with the idea of montaging them – they photograph each picture and then use these images to create a stunning, colourful montage. Each montage contains around 42 images and is beautifully presented in a 20 x 30 box frame, or the montage image can also be printed on a variety of products including postcards, bags, washbags, roller blinds and even wallpaper. For a fantastic Christmas gift for the grandparents, or even yourself, go to www.parklifephotography.co.uk. Framed montages cost £350 and Families readers will receive a complementary set of 10 postcards printed with their montage (worth £30) when they order a kids artwork montage before December 1st. Mention Families Magazine when booking.

Tame those toddler tantrums

Do you sometimes find yourself in a stressful tantrum situation with your toddler? Do you find it impossible to get them to brush their teeth, eat their supper or get into their buggy? Then you need help with taming them! Local BAFTA nominated composer and mother of two Vicky Arlidge has written a fantastic CD of music specially composed to help parents avoid these nightmare situations and turn temper tantrums into fun and giggles. “This CD has been a great help for getting my 2 year old to do everyday tasks. We always brush Skylie's teeth to 'scary lion'. She quickly opens her mouth and lets me brush!” says Callie, mum to Skylar. So next time you struggle with hair brushing or nappy changing, check out Tunes 4 Toddler Tantrums, and make life easy again. The CD costs £9.99 at www.tunes4toddlertantrums.co.uk

Curl up with a book Every primary school deserves a library, says a new Charter launched by the School Library Association. Research shows that primary school libraries, where they even exist, suffer from a lack of trained staff, space and investment. They are often empty of books and deserted by pupils, but a good school library, says Tricia Adams, director of the School Library Association, “can make a broad contribution to the teaching and learning that happens within a school. It can be the creative and imaginative heart of the school, an oasis of calm, where new technology combines with old. A place where we can all learn how to navigate today’s information overload.” A well-supported and resourced primary school library should not only teach young children the literacy skills and judgement to become creative, curious and confident, but also provide an important community space for out-of-hours learning and a point of contact with families. It is where children Thames Christian College

Private school with a heart Families visited Thames Christian College again this autumn, exactly 10 years after it was first set up, in 2000. It was a group of parents who started the school, knowing that their own children were not suited to existing high-achieving private schools. From the beginning the school aimed to cater for mixed abilities. Each child still has their own set of targets and the teachers get to know each child individually. The whole environment is designed to make sure each child is stretched and supported to bring out the very best in that child.

Holland Park School library can become passionate about books and turn into readers. The Primary School Library Charter will help primary headteachers and governors set up and run a school library, as well as increasing the contribution their library makes to the school’s effectiveness and the pupils’ wellbeing and learning. Speed is number one killer Kids Say Slow Down is the theme of Road Safety Week 2010, taking place 22-28 November. The charity Brake, the organisers of the event, urge you to take part and help stop the many accidents on our roads. Speed is the number one killer on our roads and the faster vehicles go, the less time they have to react and the harder they hit, causing numerous head and spinal injuries, lost limbs and deaths of children. In built-up areas traffic must travel at no faster than 20mph; it must go even slower outside schools and homes, so if traffic travels faster than this in your community go on, take part in the campaign and stop the menace of speeding drivers. Go to www.roadsafetyweek.org for ideas on how to get involved and campaign for slower speeds, whether you are a teacher, company, campaigner or road safety professional

Collect those pens A new campaign has been launched in schools across the country encouraging students to upcycle used writing instruments. Sponsored by Berol, Sharpie and Paper Mate in partnership with TerraCycle UK, (mentioned in this very magazine of course) the programme teaches pupils about sustainability while helping to raise funds for schools, charities and non-profit organisations nationwide. Collection centres will be established in 370 UK-based schools and for every writing instrument collected, 2p will be contributed to a school or charity of the participant’s choice. “Keeping one pen or marker out of landfill may seem like a small contribution, but multiply that by the estimated £208 million of writing instruments sold in the UK each year and it is a big opportunity to reduce waste to landfill,” said Gérard Danjou of Berol, Sharpie and Paper Mate. “It’s not only our responsibility but our moral obligation to do our part to help the environment.” The collected writing instruments will be dissembled and reprocessed to make a variety of new products, so get scribbling and start collecting! Do have a look, they do really nice things! www.terracycle.co.uk

The founders share a deeply-held view that every child is created in God's own image and they encourage each child to reach his/her full potential. While lessons and assemblies reflect this Christian ethos, the school takes all kinds of other faiths. Stephen Holsgrove, Headteacher told us, “We prefer to teach our children within a framework of religious belief as it gives them a sense of purpose.” Do go and have a look for yourselves! The school has a few places in year 10; one space in year 7 but years 8 and 9 have waiting lists. The allinclusive fees are kept relatively low – below £10k per year – in order to allow a diverse range of children at the school. In May 2010, Ofsted rated every aspect of the school's provision as good, with some outstanding features. Happy anniversary! Located a few minutes' walk from Clapham Junction. Mums in Business Bags of style

Snip snip

Many of us have used and loved Pink Lining mother’s bags, but did you know they are the brainchild of local mum Charlotte Pearl who, when she was pregnant with her first daughter and unable to find a bag she liked, decided to create her own? While working at Conde Nast and then

Most children will think they have landed in heaven when they discover this new gem in South West London. What About Me? is a new children’s hairdressing salon and Beauty Bar recently set up by Vanessa and Anthony Lewis. When mum Vanessa, a hairdresser and beauty therapist, was told by her clients that they wished they had had somewhere to go for hairdressing and beauty advice when they were children, Vanessa’s idea started to take seed. After winning over her initially-reluctant husband Anthony with her plans, the couple set out to open their own children-only salon, where children can feel relaxed and parents can breathe a sigh of

Ice in winter It may be chilly outside but there is never a season when kids don’t love ice lollies. A few years ago, Zoë Meredith and Sarah Smith met at a Spanish class for kids. Little did they know that less than a year later they would be running a thriving business together. “We were horrified at the amount of sugar, additives and preservatives in most children’s lollies,” says Sarah, “so we used to make our own. We realized there must be a gap in the market, so we took the plunge and Yummy Lollies – the first real fruit ice lolly company – was born!”

in fashion PR, Charlotte started to handstitch bags for herself. Soon her friends were asking her to make some for them and then, on a whim, Charlotte hung a few of her bags on a doorknob, photographed them and sent the pictures to the buyers of a number of department stores. Straight away, Harrods called to say they loved her bags, and Pink Lining was born! Now Pink Lining bags are stocked in over 170 stores nationwide, while Charlotte still juggles running her business with looking after her three young children without a nanny. In fact, she is often found working on her designs late at night when the children are in bed. Now Pink Lining are launching a new brand, Rosebud London, in response to the need for a competitively priced Mother’s Bag that still ticks all the style boxes. The Rosebud bags are available in two fab new designs, they have the same hobo shape as the originals, with zip pockets and pouches inside, plus two insulated bottle holders on the outside of the bag, all for only £39.99. Rosebud London bags are available exclusively in 54 Boots stores nationwide and from their website www.rosebudlondon.co.uk, but from January 2011 Mothercare will also be stocking them in 80 of their stores. relief. Now, at this wow factor salon, with pink aeroplane or blue pedal car seats, high chairs and a sophisticated chair for the older ones, children can really enjoy having their hair cut, along with a glass of juice, a cookie and even a party bag to take home. Add in a Beauty Bar for 11-16 year olds, and everyone is happy! 181 Kingston Road, London, SW19 1LH, tel: 020 8544 0888, info@whataboutme.eu.

Simple tips for mums

- useful advice?

Do you struggle to encourage your child to eat fresh fruit? Then why not try a "Bonnie" breakfast! All you need are the following ingredients: raspberries, blueberries and strawberries each in a different plastic cup, one tub of Greek yogurt and a squeezable bottle of honey/agave syrup. Now, get your child to make layers of the fruit then yogurt in a plastic transparent glass then finish off with a squeeze of honey on top. This looks colourful, is fun to make and you can try different fruits. If you really want to impress the kids, let them eat it with a fun spoon – the type that is long and used for ice cream is best. During winter substitute the yogurt with warm porridge for a hearty breakfast.

November 2010

The pair had just two rules – the lollies had to contain nothing but 100% real fruit, and they had to be so delicious that children loved them! “The first few batches were a disaster, but after a few weeks of experimenting we had developed our first four delicious flavours.” Sarah, a facilities manager and Zoe, a dancer, now sell the preservative- and additive-free products in over 300 outlets nationwide. “I think the secret behind the success of Yummy Lollies is down to them being tasty and healthy,” says Zoë. “They help mums ensure their little ones are getting part of their five a day and are naturally sweet so that even the fussiest of eaters enjoys them.” So lick your way to five a day and get your hands on these tasty, healthy treats at Waitrose and Holland & Barrett stores. www.yummylollies.com

If you are leaving your baby with a new nanny or babysitter for the first time, try and wear a scarf of shawl for several hours beforehand. The garment can be left when you leave so that if your baby wakes up, your nanny can drape it over his/her shoulder. Recognising your scent should comfort your baby and allow your nanny or babysitter to settle the child quickly and easily.

Maggie’s treasure trove: SW18 Earlsfield

Maggie O’Brien continues her search for the best things and places in SW London... this month SW18 Frankly, I initially thought of doing Earlsfield as a bit of an add on to Southfields, that was of course before I knew anything much about it. Some friends live there and I have been through it several times, but looking at it more closely, has been a real eye opener. It has a thriving local community with a great Parish church, St. Andrews, about to open up its garden, a green space for all. It has a theatre, a gorgeous character-filled Dickensian style bookshop, a very warm, cosy and active ‘indoor’ play area for children and lots more...

Tara Studio

It’s a Kid’s Thing

‘Tara Studio is an intimate cross-cultural theatre in south London which offers a diverse blend of cutting-edge, live performances from theatre to comedy, by dynamic young artists’. This is how the theatre is described and honestly, it’s such a quirky, vibrant place, I wanted to move in!

Set up by Claire Robinson, mother of two, this great indoor play space for children is very popular for both the parents and their children. I asked Claire what inspired her to develop something like this. "When my husband and I came up with the idea of It's a Kids Thing, it was always our dream to be a major part of the Community. Finding a site in the area that we lived, and 7 years on despite emerging competition, we also get visitors from all over South West London and Surrey. It gives us a real buzz that there are still people who enjoy the old fashioned things in life".

Katie Elston, Marketing and Press Officer at the theatre for 2 years, loves her job, loves the people and so enjoys being involved with all aspects of the productions. “It’s wonderful to be in such close contact with touring companies” says Katie. It was the first Asian theatre to be set up in London and although that was in the 1970’s, (sadly, after a racially motivated murder), the first performances were properly established in 2007, with Tara’s first season in 2008 and there’s been no looking back. Artsbeat, is available to 14-23 year olds who want to perform or work behind the scenes in a professional theatre. Tara also works regularly with junior schools, touring with specially created classics such as The Tempest and The Merchant of Venice. With comedy nights alternate weeks and a list of up and coming tours and projects, they are into everything. Look out for the London Jazz Festival coming up in mid-November; Cinderella - The Bollywood Pantomime and a very special major arts project ‘Sailing to Britain’ with a performance in 2012 on the River Thames! (See side panel for website which has excellent details).

Claire is friendly, energetic and hands on, even making the carrot cake herself. When I talked to some of the parents, they were all impressed with the friendly, fun and inventive atmosphere. Kelly Williams who has two children, Georgia 6 and Amelia, 11 months has been enjoying it since it opened. “I started coming as a first-time mum, had a bit of a sit-down, a coffee and time off and later on Georgia used the play area. It’s great from crawling upwards”, says Kelly. Moira, mother of 5 year old Katie and 10 month old Rosie says, “We like coming to ‘Funky Feet’, we’re local and it’s a safe environment for them to learn and explore. So, whether it’s the two tier playzone, the ‘funky feet’ class, the art club, the availability of fantastic party hire, to name but a few, check it out for yourselves.

Monkey Music classes at Earlsfield library I met Darren, father of Lily, 16 months, and they had just been to a Monkey Music class held at Earlsfield Library. He was one of several people I’d come across who spoke very highly of this fun and interactive music session. Founded in 1993, by Angie Davies, a new mother at that time herself, she set up the classes because of her own love of music and her knowledge that ‘babies easily understand and enjoy music’. The library also has a story time and baby rhyme time, and is very close to the station.

The Earlsfield Bookshop This little bookshop wouldn’t be out of place next to the Old Curiosity Shop in a Victorian street. Once inside, it’s got second-hand books galore and with something for everyone, it’s worth a special browse when you have a chance, possibly on a Saturday morning, without a buggy, also do watch the very particular opening hours, mostly afternoons during the week.

Sugar Bag Blue This is a really exciting gift shop, beautifully set out and again a lovely place to browse for ‘that special gift’. “An absolute treasure trove”, according to Lulu and Isabelle MacCauslan who lived in the area until recently, and who always loved having a look around the shop.

Mum’s very own page

Whatever makes you happy dear! By Kate Birch

We all need something to take ourselves out of ourselves. Something that is about more than just being a mum, wife, partner, employee or boss. Getting together with a group of friends is always cathartic but with just dinner or drinks there are, as Margaret puts it “always one or two people who dominate.” But, as she says “if there is an activity where you can all participate, it is a different sort of evening.”

To book club or not to book club When book groups first became popular, I could not have been more interested. An avid reader of just about anything since I was a child, I had let things slip after my children were born. Reading breaks had become sleep breaks or rubbish television breaks or no breaks at all as I tried to catch up on all I needed to do in a day. So when I got the chance to join a book group I jumped at it. Unfortunately, I joined at exactly wrong time. After looking at To Kill A Mockingbird and a harrowing account of the Holocaust, I offered to host the next session. J M Coetzee’s Disgrace was proposed. It was another gut-wrenching tale and maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised when I received phone call after phone call on the day from mums sending their regrets. In the end it was just me and one other. I like to think that the group came to its natural end. However, I never had the nerve to join another. Happily most book club mums have been spared my experience. The best things about my book club are that I have a really good time with people whose company I enjoy and also I read more novels than I otherwise would. I sometimes think we should be a little bit more serious about discussing the book and I think anyone who was serious about literary criticism would find it very frustrating! It is a very cosy book group, with lots of food, wine and chocolate involved! (Clare)

Finding the calm inside Happiness with a group of friends can also come in a quieter, more spiritual form. About a year ago, neighbours Sue and Ann were chatting about how impossible it was to take any time out without feeling guilty. They thought that if they could just discipline themselves to get together and sit in a room quietly it could help. According to Sue: “We wanted to keep it simple. The one thing we could do was to stop our minds running with a million things a minute.” The group gathers around a real fire in a garden or a candle in someone’s front room. Sometimes they exchange thoughts, sometimes one of the group takes the rest through meditation, guided visualisation or breathing exercises. Sometimes they just sit there and “enjoy the silence.” Sitting still: nothing more but it is very energising, and it fills us with the simple joy of being away from the hustle of our daily lives. It is not about religion but it is definitely spiritual, connecting with spirituality; we all come from different religious backgrounds (or none for some).

Cultural jaunts

They are more conscious of “key times” in the year, of the Equinoxes and summer and winter Solstice. This September some of them attended an Equinox celebration with local meditation teacher Solara An Ra on Streatham Common Rookery meadow: “It was lovely, no TV, no gimmicks, connecting with each other and being outdoors; the simple things in life are always the best!”

If you are at all worried about the chatter overwhelming the debate take the example of a group of mums who have decided to take the idea of a book group one step further. Once a month they plan a cultural jaunt into town. It can be to a gallery, a museum, the theatre or the cinema. Being right up close and personal to the topic spurs the debate and distracts the group away from, well, distractions. And food, wine and chocolate can still play a part!

Often the group will concentrate on sending out good intentions, thinking about others, focusing, for example, on people in war torn countries. And sometimes one of them has had a tough time in her own life. As Ann puts it: “Because we are all mums, we can provide support and understanding.”

Mum’s very own page Another mum found solace in it after “a very sad bereavement.” The singing and companionship made her feel “less heavy-hearted.” And it is such fun! When Melanie had her 40th birthday party, we all, with very little persuasion, fell in with her idea of putting on a performance at it. Melanie got in Helen Hampton of Popchoir to coach us and help us with some (very simple) choreography. (Helen has worked with Michael Jackson, Queen and Bjork among others and now with us!) I just thought ‘I always wanted to be in a band and this is the closest I can get to it. And my friends are all going to be appreciative no matter how bad we are.’ Well, they were appreciative, very much so. Even our (blissfully unaware) husbands did not make quick exits as we assembled at the microphones. They even complimented us afterwards.

From the sublime to the ridiculousness that is the karaoke group! But if quieter pursuits are not your thing and you are more of an exhibitionist, do what I do. And here, I have to blame one friend who, a few years ago, thought it would be fun to get a group around the newly purchased SingStar mics for a bit of karaoke. For some of the mums it was a fate worse than well, childbirth, but the rest of us embraced it enthusiastically. What started off as a disorganised bit of fun has become slightly more organised – core group of

eight, get-togethers every six weeks or so and outings to various karaoke clubs. Singing talent is not a prerequisite. We don’t take ourselves at all seriously (although Britain’s Got Talent beckons.) We have all become closer and karaoke has seen us through highs and lows. After I broke my leg, it was my first outing. A lift was provided, as were shoulders to lean on, both figuratively and literally as I hopped up and down the steps. Then I sang my heart out despite an aching leg and swollen feet.

It was one of the maddest and most joyful things I have ever done. And that is the whole point. As different as all these groups are, what connects is that they are all about being happy and energised. They are about something other than family or working life, (although if you need the support, it will be there). Ultimately you go home feeling that, as Margaret explains, “instead of being a mum you are someone in your own right with your own hobbies and interests.”

Baby page

Are you green enough for your baby? Part 1 By Joanna Parry

Many of us try to be as green as we can when it comes to our babies. We dress them in organic cotton babygrows, buy natural sheepskins and some of us even use real nappies. But how green really are we? Recently there has been a spate of publicity about the potentially harmful toxins in baby toys, nursery furniture and cot mattresses, so how possible is it to reduce these toxins and truly ‘green’ your baby’s nursery?

R

aising an eco-friendly baby is not only safer for baby but also reduces the impact on the environment. Most of us already recycle, we try to reduce our carbon impact and are aware of wasteful packaging. We buy fair trade baby products wherever available and we choose organic, locally grown vegetables to reduce our baby’s exposure to toxins like mercury, lead, pesticides and arsenic. And, whenever possible, we do our part to reduce air pollution and leave the car at home.

renovation stage, and while some methods require more effort and cash, others are cheap and easy. • Floor: As a general rule a hard floor is best, although bamboo and cork are also ecofriendly options. If you do want carpet, choose one made with natural fibers such as organic wool or cotton and check that it has not been treated with unnecessary chemicals or glues. Add natural wool rugs for softness and warmth.

But is this enough? “I already buy organic clothing,” says Alison. “I breast feed my baby and I use real nappies. What more can I do?” The answer is, a lot more.

Knowing the exact extent to which the air in your newborn's nursery is polluted may be more information than you want, or need, to know. But there is no need to panic. There are many ways to detox a nursery, particularly if you're still at the

14

®

• Curtains: Use natural materials such as wool, cotton, linen or silk. Wash and air the curtains before hanging them up as even natural fibres are treated with substances to make them moth resistant. • Electrical: Remove Wi-Fi, cordless phones, mobiles and wireless baby monitors from the baby's room or better from the house altogether. Children are more susceptible to electromagnetic waves which can be very harmful to development, even leading to longterm illnesses and damage to the immune system. • Open the window and let the fresh air in. Also, reduce unwanted chemicals and pathogens the free and easy way by bringing plants into your nursery. Particularly effective plants that remove toxic chemicals from the air are areca palm, lady palm, rubber plant, dragon plant, English ivy, peace lily, gerbera daisy, snake plant, spider plant and weeping fig.

The eco nursery Newborns can spend as much as 80% of the first part of their lives in their nursery, so it is important to make it as green and nontoxic as possible. In short, to create an eco nursery. The Nesting Project is a recent testing campaign that invited parents who had just decorated their babies’ rooms to put samplers in the nursery before sending them off for analysis. The results were surprising, even frightening: the lab picked up a number of pollutants including formaldehyde and other VOCs (substances emitted from everyday products and materials, including household chemicals, solvents, varnishes and paints) arising from newly laid flooring or carpet, soft furnishings, clothing, bedding, textiles and toys. It went on to explain the harmful effects of VOCs, of which symptoms can include eye, nose, throat and skin irritation and allergic reactions, nausea, headaches, dizziness and respiratory problems.

are concerned about this get the professionals in, as stripping lead paint can release toxins.

Earthborn paint £23.96 for 2.5 litres • Walls: Choose low- or no-VOC paint and natural pigments made from ingredients such as milk casein, clay, bee's wax, and natural mineral dyes. Try www.earthbornpaints.co.uk for a wide range of colours. If you prefer wallpaper you can buy recycled or wood chip paper which is 'breathable' and doesn't have a negative impact on air quality. Use products made from recycled and reclaimed materials to decorate nursery walls. Lead paint is an age old problem, and some older houses may still have lead paint on the walls or window sills. If you

• If you're pregnant let someone else renovate! It doesn’t matter how green the products you are using are, it is still safer to keep away from them until the paint has dried.

Don’t forget to think green about what you put inside your nursery, too. Families reader Amy said “I was careful about what I put on my nursery walls, but I never stopped to think about the furniture.” It’s true, most of us don’t. We assume anything and everything we buy for our nursery will naturally be safe. • Even cots can be green. Parenting

To praise or not to praise …does it affect our children’s intelligence? By Kate de Bass

I had an interesting conversation with a friendly grandfather last week, he told me he thought we over indulged our children not only with material possessions, but with praise to the point that it is meaningless to them. He divulged that his children had only been praised when it had been well earned and this was infrequently, so they lapped it up whenever given and were always striving for more.

S

hortly afterwards I read a newspaper article about a new book ‘Nature Shock’ which opened with the statement: “Don’t praise them, argue with them, and never tell them to say thank you”. The article went on to quote the work of Carol Dwek, a Stanford professor, who has looked to prove that telling a child they are bright causes the opposite result – it doesn’t prevent underperforming, but can actually cause it. The article warned of the dire consequences of praising our children: “In one study on 400 nine-year-olds in New York, telling them the six words“you are so smart at this” before a test reduced their scores by 20 per cent. This after just a single sentence, let alone the barrage of praise that pummels a typical Western child at school and beyond”.* I might at this point have made a conscious decision to stop praising my children, and modeled my behaviour on the well-meaning grandfather’s thrifty hard earned offerings had I not done a course with The Parent Practice. During the ten-week course we learnt and experienced how descriptive praise can motivate and improve our children’s self esteem and confidence and discovered the influence it can have on our children is far reaching in many ways, including their academic success. During the course we were made aware of Carol Dwek’s studies – which whilst showing that

22

®

praising children in the conventional way “You did well in your test, you’re clever” may have adverse affects, praising the effort they put into the process in a constructive descriptive way can improve their academic ability and success. A social psychologist, Dwek recognised that children have two perceptions about their intelligence, the belief that it is a fixed trait that cannot be changed versus the idea that intelligence is a malleable quality, a potential that can be developed. These beliefs affect tasks that children take on, the effort they are willing to exert, their ability to cope with setbacks and ultimately their academic performance. Dwek carried out a number of studies in schools that showed a child who is regularly told they are bright, clever, intelligent, smart, or brilliant tends to believe that intelligence is a fixed trait. They are more susceptible to worry about how bright they are, think they are stupid when they fail, tend to dislike and avoid effort, and are more likely to give up in the face of academic difficulty. However, those that were descriptively praised for their effort developed a growth mindset, believing intelligence is something that can be cultivated, making children want to do just that. They are more likely to value learning over looking clever, enjoy effort and challenges and thrive in the face of difficulty. There are a number of fascinating interviews with Carol Dwek on YouTube about her studies and their results.

Read the Parent Practice’s blog on www.familiessouthwest.co.uk This month topic: Are our schools overly competitive?

As parents we are largely responsible, the messages we give our children can mould which of the two beliefs they will adopt. If our child does well in a test and we praise them with a direct message - “Well done you’re clever”, it may give them the fixed view about intelligence with all its vulnerabilities. However, if we praise in detail, the effort that went into preparing for and completing the test, they are more likely to foster the malleable view with all its hardiness and resilience. Having adopted the skills and strategies I learned during The Parent Practice course I watch with wonder how the language I use with my children affects their self-perception and view of the world. Thankfully, not only is their confidence blossoming, but so is my mine with regard to how I am doing as a parent. I now also feel better equipped to assess and make educated judgments about the wise words of grandfathers and scaremongering media hype. •The Parent Practice run local courses, workshops and consultations for families.
