Families has asked Claire Moreau, a qualified mindfulness teacher, to share her best tips to lessen children's anxiety.
Don’t be deceived by the simplicity of these tips: do put them into practice, they work!
Mobile phones are part of our lives. They are essential communication devices. Yet, family members often have to compete with alerts and notifications that keep us constantly connected. Being fully present to the activity we're doing or the conversation we're having with our children—without being distracted by mobile phones—demonstrates that we value 'real' time together over virtual communication with other people.
When having a meal, playing a game, or speaking with them, putting our mobile phones away shows them that we are fully available.
Top tip: At mealtimes, everyone puts their mobile phones away from the table for a set time.
Children are more likely to express their feelings when they sense that we are fully available. Sitting in an area they'll pass by when returning from school or weekend activity and gently inviting them to join us can be a start. Teenagers might be more reluctant than young children to express how they feel. Letting them know that we're ready to welcome whatever troubles them might not produce an immediate result, but, in time, it can prompt them to open up about their feelings.
Top tip: Tell them they have the right to feel overwhelmed or stressed: it's Okay not to be Okay. Listen intently to them without moving into ‘fix-it mode’. Sometimes they just need a steady listening ear.
Children absorb emotions like sponges; if they don't know how to manage them, they can feel frustrated, powerless, or overwhelmed. Overhearing the news on TV, radio, or emotionally-charged adults' conversations can fuel children's anxiety. Teenagers can be alarmed by news threads on social media. Besides climate change and Covid, younger generations are now worrying about the war in Ukraine and its potential consequences.
Top tip: Avoid watching/listening to the news with young children; talk about news threads they follow with teenagers; keep adults' conversations amongst adults. Without altogether avoiding sensitive topics, discussions can be held within families in a way adapted to each age category.
Small steps can go a long way:
1. If they worry about the future, bring them back to the present moment—'right here, right now, with you, all is well' (mindfulness pillar)
2. Tell them that you love them no matter what (another mindfulness pillar).
3. Create a family routine that dissolves their worries even only for a short time—in my family, every other Friday evening, homemade pizza is sacred. We catch up while cooking, then we watch a film together.
Top tip: To help lift a feeling of powerlessness (Ukraine, climate change), depending on their age, they can sell lemonade outside the family home, or the entire family can take part in a car boot sale / 5kfamily race (i.e.) to raise money for charity.
Several studies, including new research published in JAMA psychiatry in 2022, have found that too much screen time can lead to mental health issues in children, such as anxiety and depression. Most children prefer electronic media to playing and interacting with family and peers, which impacts their social development.
Monitor screen time, ensure the content is age-appropriate, communicate with children about inappropriate images and model healthy device habits.
Top tip: Playing board games, reading, and listening to music are great alternatives. Besides, with teenagers, music can open a communication channel: asking them to make you discover their musical tastes can lead to rich intergenerational conversations.
Reading not only provides a good alternative to screen time, but it also helps to relax. A 2009 study from the University of Sussex has found that reading can reduce stress by up to 68%. Just 6 minutes of relaxing into a good book can lower blood pressure and muscle tension. It is a great distraction technique.
Top tip: Reading can also become a special family moment—elder children can read a story to their younger siblings; parent and child can each read a page aloud.
The term Nature-deficit disorder (NDD) was coined by Richard Louv in his 2005 book Last Child in the Woods. NDD can contribute to many problems, including higher rates of physical and emotional illnesses. The good news is it can easily be reversed. Spending time in nature is more accessible than we think: greens, parks, Commons and nature reserves abound in the UK. They provide the perfect setting for free family activities: walking, cycling, playing frisbee or rackets help lift the mood; watching nature's life cycle is always a treat.
Top tip: Swap an indoor lunch/tea for a picnic, yes even it is cold. Nothing beats a good walk before returning home to a hot drink/meal. Include a walk/cycle in your weekend routine.
With little ones, creating a comforting, winding down routine can help (reading a book together, listening to soothing music). With teenagers, although possibly challenging, blocking the mobile phone at a set time is recommended. Finally, at all ages, hands on the belly, breathing easily and focusing on the breath, following the gentle movement of the belly that rises and falls. If the mind is busy, counting the breath to ten (in – 1, out – 2, in – 3, out - 4, etc.) over and over can help to quieten it.
Top tip: Whatever their ages, no screen before bedtime.
There are many mindfulness apps/recorded meditations for adults and children. They might help them to relax and unwind. However, nothing compares with attending an 8-week course with a qualified mindfulness teacher. The course teaches key mindfulness skills that help children and adults identify and manage emotions, improve concentration, relax, and strengthen inner resources. Parents and children can benefit from simple exercises that help establish a strong mindfulness practice.
Top tip: Children courses are only taught in person, but many adults courses are now delivered on Zoom, so it is easier to fit them around family life.
Children sometimes feel increasingly anxious despite their families' best intentions and care. If their behaviour or anxiety level becomes worrying, it is best to seek medical advice. GPs can refer to a child psychologist or occupational therapist with training in mental health. Private practices like The Child and Family Practice in London can help too.
Top tip: Getting support for yourself while you're supporting your children is critical. Charities like www.youngminds.org.uk run a parent's helpline and provide free advice and support to any adult who might worry about a young person's behaviour or mental health.
Claire has over 10 years of meditation and yoga practice, and 3 years of experience teaching mindfulness. She completed her mindfulness teacher training for children at AMT with Eline Snel herself, and for adults with Zenways. She follows the good practice guidelines for mindfulness teachers. As a parent, she is particularly interested in how mindfulness can help parents and children develop well-being and cultivate emotional resilience, kindness and compassion.

Aspupils and teachers have now settled into the new school year, it is time to review what’s new at the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle de Londres (LFCG).
New Heads After last year’s arrival of two new Deputy Heads (Ms Viana and Mr Léridon) for the secondary level and of Mr Briquet as the Head of Marie d’Orliac primary school, this year welcomes Ms Dubès at South Kensington Primary School and Mr Riggs in Ealing at André Malraux primary school.
New classes To give as many children as possible the chance to start their bilingual education early (from age 3), two new Petite Section classes have opened respectively, one in Fulham and one in South Kensington. Boasting over forty nationalities in its community, the Lycée prides itself in welcoming pupils to successfully learn French and English at school even though they may not speak either of these languages at home.
The Lycée has always catered for individualised learning support of pupils joining the school later on. This year, this support is included in the 6e (year 7) and 5e (Year 8) timetable so that all pupils assessed with a need for temporary additional assistance can benefit from small
group workshops until they no longer need such support.
New trilingual French Baccalaureate (English & German) Having prepared generations of pupils for the French Baccalaureate, A-Levels and International French baccalaureate (bilingual), the Lycée now offers pupils an option for a trilingual International French Baccalaureate. This year, a small group of
students have taken up this new curriculum adding German literature and history to their already bilingual programme. No doubt will this attract universities’ attention worldwide!
Continuing with its tradition of multilingual education, the French Lycée has never been truer to its motto Excellence in International Education since 1915. November open days and presence at the Battersea Independent Schools Show will allow you to see for yourself and meet with pupils, parents, teachers and members of the leadership team.

Recognised for its academic excellence and its diverse and welcoming community, Dulwich College is one of the UK’s top independent schools for boys aged 7 to 18
Over 200 pupils at Dulwich have free or subsidised places, also known as bursaries, the majority of which are for between 75% and 100% of fees.
Boys offered a place at Dulwich College are in the top 15% of academic ability for their age group across the UK; your son’s current school can advise whether he is in this range.
The school ensures that every pupil feels part of College life and is pastorally supported, and they greatly value the relationship with parents and carers throughout a pupil's time. After leaving the College, CJ Obi, an award holder, studied urban planning, design and management at UCL and then founded the Urbanist Platform.
Family income, assets and other factors are considered when making a bursary award. As a
broad guideline, families whose total annual income is £35,000 or less might receive a Bursary of 100% of school fees, and families whose total annual income is around £68,000 might receive financial support of 50% of school fees (these figures are indicative only).
How do we apply and when will we be assessed for a bursary?
Step 1
Complete the online registration form and tick the box to say you are applying for a bursary. If your son is in receipt of pupil premium you will not need to pay a registration fee.
Towards the end of the Michaelmas Term you will be sent a bursary form to complete and return with supporting documentation. The bursary committee will then assess your application.
Step 3
Bursary awards are made at the same time as an offer of a place at Dulwich College.
Dulwich College warmly welcome applications, and for all confidential Bursary enquiries please contact the Registrar, Mrs Sarah Betts on bettss@dulwich.org.uk or 0208 299 9263 and to apply online please visit www.dulwich.org.uk/admissions
I didn’t come from much, in terms of money and finances, but I was given an opportunity that I feel I’ve made the most of.

Learning times tables by rote for weekly tests was a feature of most of our school days. For some, these tests would bring on the cold sweats while for others they were an opportunity to shine. But, of course, it isn’t about drills just for the sake of doing well in the tests; times table fluency can determine how easily children can grasp new mathematical concepts, such as fractions.
To help schools target support, the government have introduced a statutory multiplication check for Year 4 pupils, which tests them on whether they can recall their times tables up to 12 x 12. This test consists of twenty five questions and the children are expected to answer them within six seconds; however, there is no pass mark.
What can parents do to help?
It’s very useful to observe and work out your child’s preferred learning style - visual, auditory or kinaesthetic - so you can guide them in the most e ective direction.
Showing your child how to spot patterns and connections also helps them to apply their understanding to more complex calculations and word problems.
Try some of these ideas:
• Ask Alexa (or equivalent AI) to recite a times tables or play a multiplication song and ask your child to try to beat it;

Wandsworth Preparatory School is a coeducational independent day school for children aged 4-11. Part of the Bellevue Education group of schools, Wandsworth Prep is a school that provides an outstanding educational environment with a broad and exciting curriculum that stimulates imagination, encourages independent learning and provides pupils with the tools to thrive
Prep treats every pupil as an individual, helping each child to discover their unique talents and build their confidence in learning. The pupils benefit from a firstclass holistic education built on vital pastoral care rooted in academic excellence. Their creative curriculum brings learning to life through an engaging, thematic approach. Lessons are interactive and full of memorable experiences that inspire a love of learning, encourage curiosity, and promote independence and collaborative learning skills.
Wandsworth Preparatory School appointed its new head Laura Nike, who joined the school in September 2022. Laura was previously Head of Prep at the Old Palace School based in Croydon, also playing an integral part in setting up the Oasis Academy in Putney.
Q: How would the students describe you?
I like to think the pupils would say that I am a good listener. The pupils' voice is very important to me and is a key driver when considering the school's strategic direction. We meet regularly, and we dream big together!
Q: What was it about the school that made you want to apply for the position?
I am delighted that I have been appointed as Head at Wandsworth Prep, as it is a vibrant school in the heart of a thriving community. Wandsworth Prep actively seeks to provide a
positive learning environment where children make exceptional progress and develop a love for learning that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. The way in which the school offers a first-class holistic education built on vital pastoral care and rooted in academic excellence is inspirational. This, alongside the dedicated staff, proactive parent body and the motivated and articulate children, makes the school so unique and is why I look forward to getting started.
Q: What have you been most proud of since joining the School as Headteacher?
I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. When I was in reception class, I remember lining up my dolls and playing school with my friends—I was always the teacher! As I continued through school, I remember many inspiring teachers I couldn’t help but want to emulate. In particular, I had a Year 4 teacher that significantly impacted me. I remember how she encouraged and supported the children in the class, and that desire to be a teacher continued to grow. After finishing school, I went to university to study Primary Education, and I loved every minute. I started
my career as a Nursery teacher, and I was hooked. I loved going to work each day and observing the children as they made progress and developed that deep love for learning that would stay with them for the rest of their lives. As the years passed and I taught throughout the school in different year groups and took on various senior leadership roles, my desire to lead a school was evident. To be given the opportunity to lead, empower and inspire children and staff daily with an unswerving dedication to seeing children flourish socially and academically is the most immense privilege of my life.
Join Mrs Nike, the staff and pupils at Wandsworth Preparatory School for one of their open mornings from 9-10.30am on 17 Nov, 10 Jan and 7 Feb.

“We work hard. We dream big. We achieve the extraordinary”
Redcliffe Gardens School, a co-educational Prep School and nursery in Chelsea, is delighted to announce that Mrs Sarah Glencross has been appointed as Head from September 2022. Mrs Glencross joined Redcliffe Gardens School as Deputy Head in January 2021—shortly after the school became part of the Godolphin and Latymer School Foundation—working closely with the newly appointed Interim Head. Since then, the relationship with Godolphin and Latymer has been developed and strengthened and there has been a very successful period of ‘building back’ post-pandemic. The 2022 Year 6 leavers achieved a cluster of fantastic offers, including academic scholarships and a Music exhibition, to top senior schools in London and beyond such as Godolphin and Latymer, Latymer Upper, Francis Holland and Dulwich College. In March 2022 Redcliffe Gardens School achieved the highest possible grading in its inspection report from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).
Mrs Glencross brings to the role, not only her understanding and love of Redcliffe, but also the wider experience she has of other London schools, most notably Latymer Upper and Prep Schools and Newland House School in Twickenham. Commenting on her appointment Mrs Glencross said, ‘I look forward to working with the whole Redcliffe community to nurture and fulfil the promise of each individual child and to continue our exciting plans for the future’.

Excitement and exploration help kids avoid anxiety and depression, according to researchers from the University of Exeter. The study found that children who spend more time playing outside – and taking part in activities out of sight of adults including exploring woods, camping out, swimming in a river or lake, trying new outdoor skills and creating obstacle courses – had fewer ‘internalising problems,’ characterised as anxiety and depression.
Helen Dodd, Professor of Child Psychology, who led the study, said: “We’re more concerned than ever about children’s mental health and our findings highlight that we might be able to help protect children’s mental health by ensuring they have plentiful opportunities for adventurous play.’ The study’s authors are calling on authorities to ensure that every child has free access to a safe space for adventurous outdoor play close to their home.
The study is published in the journal Child Psychiatry & Human Development.
We were so impressed by the White House Prep’s brand new building, which has just opened. Designed by award-winning architects, vPPR, the building adds an additional 6000sq ft to their existing site and comprises four additional classrooms, a double height open plan space and dining hall on the ground floor and flexible focused learning space on the first floor. It has floor to ceiling windows throughout, which adds much light to the classrooms as well as a feeling of relaxing calm. The building has been built with the utmost environmental and sustainable materials and stands out as a leader in not only enhancing the classroom experience but adding a touch of magic to school life. The garden has been given much thought and is extraordinary: it is very much an extension of the classroom with several learning spaces incorporated in the design: the bird-hide tree house can be used as a classroom (class sizes are 15 max), a small amphitheatre for drama and a gardening club of course: altogether a wonderland for children who can truly relax, explore and connect with nature.

It’s important that children are tech-savvy but there is very little evidence that screentime contributes to a child’s cognitive ability. Screens are so appealing because of their continually changing content so any activities that we attempt at home with the kids need to be equally appealing to little hands, eyes and brains.
Here are a few activities that are easy to set up if you need to keep the kids entertained this half term or you’re stuck at home during a rainy weekend. You probably have most of what you need at home already.
Reading to your kids is great but don’t limit the experience to sitting on the sofa. If the book is set in a cave, evict the vacuum cleaner from under the stairs and issue everyone with head torches! If you’re reading a desert adventure, create a Bedouin tent using some sheets and your clothes horse.
This is a versatile toy but if the smell and texture of big-branded playdough is something you’re not keen on, there are some wonderful options for soft and scented playdough that doesn’t leave a greasy residue. Just check that the playdough has been UKCA tested before buying.
Baking shortbread and scones is simple enough for inexperienced bakers to try and hopefully they will taste great! Baking bread is also surprisingly simple and you and your children can have lots of fun creating di erent animals out of the dough to then bake in the oven.
Children love to paint but the mess can fill many parents with dread. Instead of using poster paint, try using watercolour paints which are easier to clean up. To change things up, get the kids painting on co ee filters, a canvas or ice cubes.
This doesn’t need to be overly complicated. Often keeping it simple is far better than creating something elaborate. Try making a paper boat and see how far it travels or create tealight holders out of old jam jars by gluing on pieces of tissue paper. These also make lovely presents for grandparents.
Choose something to be the treasure, hide it and then create a map for your kids to follow. Make it more interesting (and last longer) by having the map lead your little pirates to di erent locations where each location’s ‘treasure’ is a clue to the next location. To make the map look more ‘authentic,’ scrunch up the paper and stain it with a damp teabag.
This is a fun way for kids to learn about design and teamwork. All you need is a piece of paper, some pens, some counters (maybe toy figures), some dice and some rules. Involve your children in working out how the game works and create and decorate your board before playing!
There are lots of easy science experiments that can be tried at home with household items and they encourage kids to ask questions, make predictions and understand the world around them. Try making a lava lamp with water, food colouring and oil in a jar. Add an e ervescent tablet and watch what happens!
