We all want our children to be safe and connected in the big city, especially when they’re not with us. When they’re still too young for a mobile phone, wearable smart watches have much to offer. Families South West set out to test the leading providers in the market ahead of the new school year:

We love the way that exercise is gamified to encourage children to move, and with its parent-friendly features, from chore management to emergency contact access, the Vivofit jr.3 is a beacon of safety, engagement and growth. The lack of touchscreen is a minus, but the watch is easy to navigate via a button by the screen.

The watch is perfect for modern, active lifestyles and offers versatile customisation through swappable colourful straps. A Moochies SIM subscription is needed to unlock the full activation and connected features.

So, not a watch for parents who want to keep track of their children in real time, but plenty to offer younger wearers.

Features include: dual camera for photos, videos and fun effects, Monster Detector augmented reality game, 1.4” colour touch screen and splash-proof design, motion sensor, pedometer and voice recorder, alarm clock, timer, stopwatch and more.

Hill House School

Hill House School invests in highly skilled teachers who are passionate about their subject, imaginative in the way they communicate and personal in the way that they relate to every child. By providing opportunities to play with English language for example, the school teaches children to read and write poetry as this is essential to creative learning.

Earlier in the year the English department hosted its annual Sir John Betjeman Festival with whole school participation. “Poetry is really important at our school”, says Joanna Hasler, Head of English and Librarian at the school. Also this year Hill House competed at the inaugural poetry recital at Queen’s Gate School and won both of the age categories. www.hillhouseschool.co.uk

Sydenham High girls forge their own path to success

Sydenham High School students achieved remarkable success on A Level results day, overcoming Covid-related disruptions to secure spots at their preferred universities and pathways. The Sixth form cohort's resilience and determination shone through, with a majority gaining acceptance into their top-choice universities. Notably, two students are bound for Cambridge to study History of Art, while others pursue diverse paths such as veterinary medicine, medicine, and various courses at esteemed institutions like UCL, Birmingham, Leeds, and Edinburgh.

In sciences and maths, 44% attained A*/A grades, with standout achievements like Ruby's AAA*A for Biochemistry at York University. The creative arts department also flourished, sending students to renowned institutions like Central St Martins and the University of Arts London. Jerusha embarks on a degree apprenticeship at Jacobs Engineering Solutions, valuing hands-on learning. Former Heads of School expressed their joy at realizing their dreams.

Sydenham High School, founded in 1887, stands as an independent day school promoting fearlessness in its diverse and talented community of girls aged 4-18.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Mrs Tamsin Groocock, Head of Science at Cranleigh Preparatory School tells us: “At Cranleigh Prep we encourage our pupils to explore new experiences. This year we held an activity day called Lights, Camera, Action. Activities focused on the film industry – from camera work and film editing, to Karate Kid lessons, stop-motion animation and acting.

The Science department looked at the history of shadow puppets and how Hagrid was made to be tall with forced perspective. The IT department ran stop-motion and green-screen sessions. The Drama and English departments ran a Young Film Academy. Our Dance teacher taught La La Land and Grease. We had a masterclass on special effect make-up, a talk from a stunt woman and a masterclass on monologue acting.”

What parents say

Three parents tell you what they like about Parsons Green Prep (PGP), an independent prep school for boys and girls aged 4 to 11.

How and why did you choose the school, and what gave you confidence in it?

Heather and her family visited the school on its Open Day. She says: "We knew immediately that Parsons Green Prep was the right choice for our family. PGP has the ethos and feel of a small village school, but with dynamic teachers and the strong academics that you expect from a London day school. The teachers and staff foster a secure and encouraging environment where children are confident, engaged, and eager to learn." Charlotte echoes this sentiment, explaining that her family chose the school for their daughters as it has "a close community where you feel fostered by both the school and the other parents."

Any moment that stood out for you that really describes the atmosphere/ethos of the school?

Heather highlights: "Every Friday at assembly, children are recognised for achievements in art, music, sport, acting, LAMDA, writing, as well as for their contribution to the school community, whether it's through roles on the Eco Committee or acts of kindness. The pride they feel and the confidence this instills is immeasurable." Charlotte emphasises her love of attending sports fixtures, where the entire team supports each other and provides encouragement in both team and individual events. She also enjoys musical performances, where even first graders are encouraged to perform for the school, fostering valuable experience and confidence. "The children are not afraid, and they are curious" she explains.

What feature of the school do you particularly like?

Charlotte speaks highly of the school's focus on the whole child, not just academics or sports. She appreciates the prioritisation of relationships among children, creating a supportive and motivating environment for development. "My daughters have grown confident, secure, and willing to try and fail, knowing they will be encouraged to try again and supported by both staff and students", she shares.

How well does the school prepare children for exams?

Heather, who was unfamiliar with the secondary school process due to her American background, praises the school for guiding her family and helping them understand the process. She states: "We have now gone through the 11+ twice and have been very happy with the process and the results. The teachers and the school do a wonderful job of preparing the children and building their confidence over Key Stage 2, so when the time comes, the students feel assured and ready."

Triya explains that 11+ preparation starts in Year 5 with one-on-one meetings with the Headteacher and form teacher. Sample papers are gradually introduced, leading up to 3 to 4 papers a week in Year 6. Charlotte adds that the teaching quality is excellent, with a high teacher-to-pupil ratio. Students become

independent and learn to 'edit' their own work, preparing them for secondary school exams. “There is a slow and lengthy build up to the 11+ exams and my daughter has not felt stressed by the process”, she adds.

What is the feel of the school?

Triya describes PGP as an inviting place filled with happy children and positive energy. She emphasises the school's role in fostering confidence and strong friendships. Charlotte highlights the school's diversity and inclusive environment, praising the lack of exclusionary or bullying behavior.

Priceless comment your child made one day? Heather shares her son's sentiment as he approaches the end of his first year at senior school. He says: "It's like a third home now; PGP will always be my second home." She concludes: "It's a really special place."

Meet THE head

How would students describe you?

Mrs Helen Loach Head of Streatham and Clapham Prep School

Streatham and Clapham Prep School stride into a new academic year with Mrs Helen Loach as Head of Prep. Already a well established presence at the school, Mrs Loach has been Deputy Head at SCPS for the last four years before starting her Headship in January of this year.

I like to think that the girls at SCPS like me as a person and look to me as a role model. I suspect they would describe me as firm but fair, kind and compassionate, determined and funny! I like to lead by example with the girls at the Prep and I pride myself on modelling resilience and overcoming adversity. My new mantra is: ‘I can, I will, just watch me…’

What was it about SCPS that made you apply for the position?

As an ex-GDST girl myself, I always wanted to teach within this family of schools. When I was looking at the position at SCPS, I was particularly drawn to the richly inclusive and broadly diverse quality of the school. I remember my first look around the school with the then Head Master – I immediately felt a sense of belonging within the space and I knew it would be a good fit for me!

What inspired you to become a teacher and later a head-teacher?

Teaching has always been my dream. Having been lucky enough to be taught by some amazing teachers myself, and with many brilliant school experiences to look back on, I knew I wanted to give other children the same opportunities. Children get one chance at education: we have to get it right. I have always been determined to do my best for the children in my care. I want to inspire them to be proud of who they are, with their own unique talents and identities. I want them to become the best that they can be and understand their irreplaceable value in the world. I like to think that we instil this in every SCPS girl.

Premier League or Last Night at the Proms? Having studied Music as part of my degree, it would have to be ‘Last Night at the Proms’ for me! I love relaxing to a wide range of music, particularly classical, and being inside the Royal Albert Hall takes me back to when I was a girl and performing on stage. Music is a crucial part of any child’s education and I remain hugely passionate about this aspect of our curriculum. What is something about yourself that no-one else knows?

I’m fiercely competitive! You do not want to come up against me in a game of Yahtzee, Bananagrams or Pictionary!

learning styles

Just as none of us look the same, everyone is born with tendencies towards certain learning styles when developing literacy, language and motor skills. Recognising your child’s learning style is important in understanding how they access their learning, particularly if they appear to be struggling in certain areas.

Visual learners rely on what they see. Encourage them to use visual aids, sit at the front of the class and write down or draw information.

Kinesthetic learners learn best through doing and moving. They benefit from using tools, acting out or role-playing new information and having freedom of movement. Auditory learners learn best through hearing and listening. Engage in discussions about what they are learning, read stories out loud and repeat information. Solitary learners absorb information independently of other people. Let them make notes and recite back, provide quiet learning spaces and give opportunities for sharing their learning. Verbal learners respond well to written or spoken words. Play word games, use rhymes, acronyms and mnemonics, read their writing aloud, encourage discussion and debate. Logical learners use logic and structures in order to learn work things out for themselves and have them verbalise ideas and answers.

Identifying your child’s learning style

Observe how your child naturally interacts with the world around them and also note weaknesses: what types of tasks do they find challenging?

Watch how your child expresses themselves. Children will be more expressive through their natural learning style. Auditory learners express themselves best through words whilst visual learners are more apt to reveal their emotions through facial expressions. Kinesthetic learners use more body language and may seem unable to stop themselves fidgeting.

Consider your child’s interests. These will likely reflect their learning styles. Auditory learners usually show an interest in music and sounds. Visual learners often have interests both in reading, watching TV and looking at interesting objects. With kinesthetic learners, look for an interest in physical activities. See how your child solves problems. Children lean into their learning styles. Auditory learners tend to talk through and discuss possible solutions whilst visual learners use their eyes to solve problems. Kinesthetic learners will usually try to solve problems with their hands.

Being flexible around learning styles

As important as it is to understand and support your child with simple strategies to help them learn in the way that suits them best, it’s also helpful to encourage and embrace new ideas and a more flexible approach to their learning.

Recent research has concluded that teaching children to use one specific learning style over others may not be entirely beneficial within the classroom setting. Sticking to what you perceive as your preferred learning style can create limitations, giving a false belief that learning can only be managed in one particular way. The most important thing is for a child to have the time to self-reflect on how they learn best and to be encouraged to experiment with tackling problems from a variety of angles.

It is also important to note that over time a child’s learning styles can change as they develop and progress through their own personal growth and their educational journey. Every child is unique and learning style is just one part of the greater way that your child learns.

styles?

While the information people receive might be the same, each several factors, one of which is learning style.

Your child’s tendencies and preferences for learning can be influenced by peers, cultures, age, their own experiences and available educational materials. What works for one child doesn’t necessarily work for the next.

greatly impact their successes in the classroom as well as contributing to their own sense of personal development and achievement.

With the help of observant parents and teachers, children can benefit from understanding and engaging their natural tendencies. But, it is a rare child who solely works best with one learning styles, a child will have a bigger ‘toolbox’ to call on, finding a combination that enhances their ability to understand, recall and use the information they learn.

How can AI support dyslexia?

Recently, the parent of a dyslexic student expressed their concern to me about their son’s preference for writing essays longhand instead of using speech-to-text software. Despite rewriting by hand helped organise his jumbled thoughts and

Assistive technology plays a significant role in education, supporting students in all kinds of ways. Spelling and grammar software, for example, is widely used and not just by individuals with dyslexia. It helps improve spelling, grammar, punctuation and sentence structure. These tools enhance the ideas generated by individuals and guide them to ensure accuracy.

Artificial intelligence (AI) takes assistive technology a step further. When asked a question, Natural language processing tool ChatGPT can provide multiple options and ideas, serving as a valuable starting point. However, some individuals with dyslexia, particularly those who struggle with reading, may find it challenging to sift through the responses. So, what can be done to maximise its usefulness?

Education specific AI tools

AI technology can help bring some order to students’ ideas and form them into coherent arguments. This is something that assistive technology cannot do alone. For example, if the student who prefers writing longhand had access to AI technology that could assist him both in writing up his thoughts and managing paragraphs into a logical order, it would greatly benefit him.

With repeated use, the student could acquire the necessary techniques himself and learn the organisation process independently.

Natural language processing tools like ChatGPT can suggest improvements, correct factual errors and enhance the readability of content. This can be especially valuable for dyslexic individuals who struggle with remembering and recalling details, such as in a history project where dates and facts must be accurate.

Overall, AI technology can be a powerful ally in education, assisting students with dyslexia in organising their thoughts and enhancing their overall learning experience.

On the other hand, an over-reliance on AI could inhibit a child’s ability to think creatively for themselves. Take our use of mobile phones for example. We no longer have to remember frequently dialed numbers until we lose our phones. How many numbers from your phone can you remember yourself? AI should therefore be used in moderation.

Usha Patel is a neurocognitive therapist at Raviv Practice London. If you are interested in learning more about what therapies and methods could be combined with AI to help a dyslexic child achieve their potential, visit www.ravivpracticelondon.co.uk

dyslexic children

While AI can be a valuable tool, there are a few considerations to keep in mind for students with dyslexia:

Personalised learning needs: Every student with dyslexia has their own unique learning needs and preferences. While AI can always cater to the specific learning styles, paces or individual needs of students with dyslexia.

Lack of contextual understanding: AI systems operate through algorithms and patterns derived from vast amounts of data. While they can provide information and generate responses, they may lack contextual understanding and nuanced interpretation. Emotional and social aspects: Learning involves not only acquiring knowledge but also emotional and social engagement. Although beneficial in certain aspects, AI cannot fully replace the emotional connection and support provided by human interaction.

Students with dyslexia have unique learning needs that require a personalised approach. Combining the benefits of AI tools with learning experience.

The skills of a good dyslexia teacher

A good dyslexia teacher possesses several qualities that with dyslexia. Here are some of them:

Knowledge and expertise: They are knowledgeable about evidence-based interventions, instructional techniques and accommodations that can support students with dyslexia. Patience and empathy: They demonstrate patience, understanding and empathy towards the struggles and challenges of their students.

They employ a variety of teaching strategies to match and support their students’ diverse learning styles and strengths.

Structured and multisensory approach: They use techniques that engage multiple senses eg visual, auditory and kinesthetic, which can enhance learning and memory retention.

With these qualities, an experienced dyslexia teacher can make a significant positive impact on the academic and personal development of dyslexic students, giving them self-confidence and helping them thrive and reach their full potential.

11+ preparation tips

If you have decided on selective secondary school education for your child and made your applications, the next step is entrance exam preparation.

The 11+ exam will almost certainly contain mathematics and English assessments as a minimum. Both of these will often contain questions on parts of the national curriculum your child has already covered in school. But not always. You may need to supplement their learning at home via online resources, targeted question books, past papers and online mock exams.

11+ preparation: more than maths and English

While English and maths make up the basis of most 11+ entrance exams, they are not the only exams that your child might sit. Some papers will contain a creative writing assessment. Some schools also test for reasoning ability. This can incorporate verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, critical and applied reasoning and spatial reasoning.

Many independent schools also call in applicants for interviews or assessment days where students tour the school and take part in various activities. A lot of this content is not taught in schools so preparation outside school hours is vital in order to make sure your child is as prepared as possible. Start early and have a timetable. You might consider tuition, group classes or intensive summer courses but it’s worth working on the preparation at home too.

11+:

state grammars versus independent schools

There is no set rule as to what the 11+ will look like for entry to your school of choice. The only thing you can be relatively sure of is to expect a mathematical ability test and an English test as a minimum.

Many state grammar schools use multiple choice assessments from exam boards including GL, CSSE, SET and Future Stories. All state grammar schools within a local authority often have the same test.

Independent schools can design their own papers which may include non-multiple choice questions. Some schools have grouped together to form a ‘consortium’ where your child takes just one test to apply to a variety of schools eg The London Consortium.

Consult the websites of your chosen schools for details on what the exams will include.

It’s always a good idea to ask the schools that you’ve applied for to add you to their mailing lists, so that you will be across any changes that are made to their exam format.

Combine the shio koji, ginger, garlic and sugar in a small bowl. Bring a large pan of water to the boil and remove from the heat. Add the noodles and broccoli florets and leave to soften for 5 minutes, stirring after a couple of minutes to break the noodles up.

Heat 2 tbsp oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the mushrooms and fry, turning frequently, for 5 minutes until lightly browned. Lift out onto a plate. Add the remaining 1 tbsp oil, the salad onions and broccoli stalk to the pan. Stir fry for 3 minutes, until starting to soften and colour.

NHS 111 service to offer paediatric advice

Patients are set to receive an enhanced NHS 111 service offering increased access to specialist paediatric advice for children as part of a new, recently announced blueprint.

Parents and carers seeking health advice for children and young people using NHS 111 by phone or online will be offered specialist advice, including support from paediatric clinicians who can help them manage their child’s illness at home or decide the best route for their care.

This will see some children referred directly to a same-day appointment with a specialist rather than attending A&E, avoiding hundreds of unnecessary hospital admissions.

The new plans will see an increased number of clinicians – including retired staff and returners – working in NHS 111 to provide the enhanced offer to patients.

Irish town unites in smartphone ban

Parents in the Irish town of Greystones have banded together to collectively tell their children they cannot have a smartphone until secondary school. Parents’ associations across the district’s eight primary schools have adopted a no-smartphone code to present a united front against their children’s lobbying.

‘If everyone does it across the board you don’t feel like you’re the odd one out. It makes it so much easier to say no’ said Laura Bourne, who has a child in primary school. ‘The longer we can preserve their innocence the better.’

The voluntary pact is to withhold smartphones from children – at home, in school, everywhere – until they enter secondary school. Applying it to all children in the area reduces the chance of a child having a peer with a smartphone and parents can present the code as a school rule.

Toddlers’ gut bacteria predict future obesity

Scientists can determine whether a child will go on to develop obesity by analysing their gut bacteria during their early years, a new study suggests. Research conducted at the Université Sorbonne Paris found that changes in the gut bacteria that predispose to adult obesity begin in early childhood. The study looked at the data from 512 infants who were part of a study that tracked the lives of 18,000 children born in France.

The scientists detected a link between the children’s BMI score at age 5 and the ratio of two types of obesity-related bacteria in their gut –Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes.

Lead author Gaël Toubon said: ‘The reasons these gut bacteria affect weight is because they regulate how much fat we absorb. Our findings reveal how an imbalance in distinct bacterial groups may play an important role in the development of obesity.’

Self-settling without the tears

All babies vary, but this non-crying method works at any age. Babies learn to self-settle, reducing night wakings if not hungry.

Remember: time, repetition, and consistency are key.

The notion of "sleep training" is often misunderstood and carries negative connotations. While fetuses naturally sleep in the womb without learning, teaching babies to fall asleep in response to external cues is possible

Babies learn through associations. If babies are consistently fed or rocked to sleep within their first six months, they link these actions with sleep. Such associations can be needed during night wake-ups. If your baby is over six months and struggling with night awakenings, fostering sleep independence might be useful.

A preferred approach is gradual retreat. This kind technique avoids leaving babies to cry. First, establish a calming bedtime routine, possibly including a pre-bath feeding to lessen the feeding-sleep association.

When it's bedtime, use your usual method to make your baby drowsy but not fully asleep. Place them in the crib and offer reassurance briefly. Sometimes, they'll surprise you and fall asleep unaided.

If they're upset, soothe with shushing or patting. If unsuccessful, pick up, calm, and return them to the crib. Repeat as needed. The goal is selfsettling, reassuring them the crib is safe and you're responsive.

As the crib becomes linked with sleep, reduce interventions. If you've shushed and patted, choose one. Aim to place your baby awake in the crib, say goodnight, and let them sleep.

Before starting:

Ensure your baby is in good health.

Confirm they’re having daytime naps. Make sure they’re adequately fed and hydrated.

Establish a consistent bedtime. Create a dark room for melatonin production.

Consider white noise for a peaceful sleep atmosphere.

Ensure a comfortable room temperature to prevent night waking. Restful nights await!
