Avid fans of the TV show ‘Dragons Den’ may well remember Razzamataz Theatre Schools. The fledgling business became one of the few companies to successfully secure funding from the dreaded Dragons. That was back in 2007 and today you can find Razzamataz schools all over the country. The latest of these is Razzamataz Wokingham which opens its doors this month, the first ‘Razz’ in the Thames Valley. Principal, Shelley Otway, is a successful West End theatre Dragon Duncan Bannatyne meets the Razz gang performer and the choreographer of over 50 productions. She has taught at several other theatre schools and tells us why her school is different: “Razz is fun, fresh, funky and modern! It’s also very affordable. In fact ‘The Stage’ newspaper nominated us in the top three for versatility of curriculum, affordability and value for money.” “Pupils can learn street dance, commercial and musical theatre, as well as drama and singing. And they will have plenty of opportunity to show off their new skills in regular productions at local theatres. Older children can also work towards an accredited qualification, the Arts Award.” Shelley adds: “Students will also develop their social skills and confidence, improving all areas of their lives, as well as making friends and most importantly having fun!” The new school will be based at Emmbrook Senior School, in Wokingham, and run on Saturdays for 4-18 year olds. To find out more why not book your child onto one of the free taster sessions being held on 18 September? But hurry as places are limited. To contact Shelley please phone 0118 979 1814 or 07970 034488, email her at wokingham@ razzamataz.co.uk or visit www.razzamataz.co.uk

News & Views Support for dads “It’s been a life changing experience,” says Wayne Rooney on becoming a dad, a sentiment felt by most new, and very proud dads. But after the initial excitement of finding out their partner is pregnant, many dads feel they don’t receive as much help and support as mums-to-be, and when the baby arrives and the lack of sleep and new responsibilities sets in, they often feel unprepared and left behind. To help make life easier for dads, the NCT is launching a new set of resources including online booklets and a DVD to help them adjust to their role and handle the major changes that fatherhood throws up. “NCT recognises men have different needs to women when it comes to being a parent,” says Belinda Phipps, NCT Chief Executive. “All too often the focus is on the mother but dads need help too.” Free online booklets have been written by dads for dads and cover topics such as understanding the different stages of pregnancy, changing lifestyles and relationships and juggling life as a parent. So if you’re a dad and would like to find out more or to join NCT’s online support group go to www.nct.org. uk/dads The ‘Daddy Cool’ DVD at £4.99 can be ordered from the NCT shop by calling 0845 8100 100 or www.nctshop.co.uk

Family cycling made easy Cycling is the perfect way to spend time with your family, keep fit and healthy and, with September days often warm and sunny, now is the time to do it. More of us are buying rather than renting bikes, so to transport them to those country paths and forest trails try the new MAXXRAXX car bike-rack. The rack can hold up to 5 bikes, adapts to fit any vehicle and keeps your bikes secure, and while most strapfixed bike racks rely on your bike resting on the paintwork of the car, the MAXXRAXX uses the tow bar as its divider, ensuring there is no damage to either your car or your bike. Prices start at £127 and each model is available in either 2-, 4- or 5-bike forms. Go to www.maxxraxx.co.uk or call 0845 2303 799 for more information or to purchase the MAXXRAXX. Another new product has arrived in the UK recently that makes cycling for young children safer. The i-Go from Weehoo is a trailer bike for 3 to 8 year olds that trails behind a parent’s bike. It belongs to a new category of bicycle trailer called a pedal trailer more than simply an improvement on existing buggy trailers or tag-a-longs, it has a 3 point harness, foot straps and quick release mechanisms, enabling your child to either contribute to pedaling or even take a nap! For an enjoyable and safe experience on a bike check out the i-Go. It costs £240 at www.weehoo.co.uk Happy cycling!

That was another government’s mantra – Tony Blair adopted it as his slogan in 1997 – but it could as easily fit the bill for the new Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition.
The government believes that ‘free schools’ have the potential to raise achievement in areas where local authority-run schools aren’t providing a good education – and he points to the US for evidence that his scheme will work. There, he says that some of the most successful schools have been set up by groups backed by parents and teachers – and he’d like to see the same thing happen here. There’s a similar scheme, too, in Sweden, which again has seen the foundation of many successful schools. But the free schools scheme is only part of the new government’s plans for education. The other main policy concerns academies; shortly after being appointed education secretary, Mr Gove wrote to every primary, secondary and special school in England inviting them to apply for academy status. Academies, like free schools, are outside of local authority control and are funded by private organisations, or by central government. Earlier this summer, Mr Gove said seven in ten top secondary schools had expressed an interest in getting academy status – and he hoped that the ones who did forge ahead with this would help drive academic standards higher, because it would give them more autonomy than they have at the moment. Parents and teachers have worried about academies being too exclusive, and discriminating against special needs pupils; but Mr Gove has promised that academies will be governed by admissions codes which will guarantee fair access to all, and safeguard the inclusive character of comprehensive schools. In all, the reforms Mr Gove is promising have the potential to provide the biggest shake-up in state education in a century, with parents in the vanguard. Watch this space!
school happen. Setting up a new school, as the site says, isn’t easy – but the network aims “to make it as easy as possible” and promises that it will “shortly be publishing data on sites, budgeting, and detailed guides on the process of setting up a school from start to finish”. Despite the major cuts that lie ahead in public spending, Mr Gove has promised £50 million to cover start-up costs for free schools. And he’s also given his word that the current planning laws and building regulations, which conspire to make life difficult for parents’ groups trying to set up schools, will be reformed.
Why so? Well, according to education secretary Michael Gove, major changes are afoot...and they’re the sort of changes that many parents have campaigned for over the last few years. In an age when an increasing number of mothers and fathers have questioned all sorts of issues around their children’s schools, Gove has a new message: do it yourself. ‘Free schools’ are the government’s Big New Idea, and here’s how the idea will work. First, you need a group of parents (plus maybe teachers, and other interested parties) who feel there’s a need for a brand new school in their area. Next, you need to gather your case – and get as many supporters as possible. You also need to put together evidence for why the school you’re planning is necessary – which may be, for example, that it’s providing a secondary school in an area that doesn’t already have one, and where a lot of children have to travel large distances to get to where they’re being educated. Or, you may want to set up a school with a particular faith bias. Alternatively, you may think that the existing schools in your area are too large, and that some children would benefit from a much smaller establishment. There’s an organisation called the New Schools Network whose job is to talk through whether plans for a new school are viable – their website is packed with useful advice on how to go about gathering the momentum, the documents, the funding and the premises you need to make a

School Noticeboard New books for dyslexic children
Educational placemats Little Wigwam is the brainchild of Jo Slade, a mother of 2 and her husband Mark. They’ve worked hard with illustrators and teachers to produce a range of bright, eye-catching, educational placemats for a range of ages, that also tie-in with the National Curriculum. Children can learn the alphabet, their times tables, how to identify the flag of Mexico or where Saturn is in the solar system, all whilst waiting for their tea! The mats are made from polypropylene in Great Britain and are 100% recyclable. Have a look at www.littlewigwam.com for more details or to buy.
Take the pain out of Maths homework Maths is the school subject that worries parents the most. Sometimes it’s anxiety about their own maths ability. Just as often, it’s discovering that the methods we learned at school look completely different from the ones being taught today. Maths for Mums & Dads (Square Peg, £10.99) is packed with explanations, games and insights into how to help children with their maths. Here are some tips from the book: 1. Make maths part of your everyday interactions with your child. Ask them to help you to work out the change at the shop, to check how many minutes until the train is due, weigh ingredients
Outdoor life at The Cedars ‘I learnt so many new skills building a shelter in the woods – it was great fun too!’ Learning takes a variety of forms Children from The Cedars enjoying the outdoor life and children who attend The Cedars School, in Aldermaston, are able to take advantage of many opportunities to learn outside the classroom. The completion of a new outdoor learning area this year, which includes climbing frame, stage, sand pit and water trays, enables the children to move freely
‘My Dog Nick’ is the first in an innovative new series of books specially designed for dyslexic children and published by Dancing Kites Creative Learning, www. dancingkites.co.uk ‘My Dog Nick’ features a carefully selected combination of illustrated poetry, puzzles and activities, combining words, illustrations and rhymes in a fun way to encourage and inspire dyslexic children to read and write. The illustrations give clear visual clues to the related words, so that children remember what they’ve read, while the activities reinforce learning. Dancing Kites is the brainchild of local mum Corinna Shepherd, who will be at Waterstones in The Oracle, Reading on 18 September, from 11am-2pm, signing books and running an activity session.
Corinna explains, ‘I realised that while many books exist relating to the problem of dyslexia, very few have been written that are doing anything to address the actual problem, particularly for young children.’ More books in the series are coming soon. These will be structured in three levels relating to the nationally recognised Alpha to Omega scheme, and aimed at kids aged 5–15. The books are based on spelling, not reading, ages so difficulties may be detected earlier.
etc. Pose mathematical questions out loud to yourself (“let’s see, how much change will I need?”) and pause so that your child can ‘come to the rescue’. 2. Learn about the new methods being taught, particularly the grid method for multiplication and chunking for division. These are more connected to the methods you learned than you might think. 3. Play board games involving dice and money with your child. Car games such as pub cricket are great for maths interaction, too. 4. Learn some mathematical magic tricks (you’ll find plenty in the book). Children love magic and will happily do maths if it is part of performing the trick. 5. When helping with homework, be patient. Children rarely ‘get it’ immediately. And if things are getting fraught, take a break. Often the best way to tackle a problem is to sleep on it. 6. Don’t say “I was always hopeless at maths”. It’s usually not true, and it can make your child think maths isn’t worth the effort.
between indoor and outdoor learning areas. The outdoor learning continues each summer when pupils spend three days in the extensive grounds of Ufton Court. Map reading, orienteering and studying nature are just some of the opportunities available to the children. Parents are always welcome to visit and see The Cedars in action. If you are considering this option contact the schools that you are interested in as soon as you can to discuss admission policies and timings; it’s never too early to register. Some schools require an entrance exam and/or interview and many offer scholarships or bursaries, so it pays to do your homework. Have a look at www.isc.co.uk which offers a wealth of advice on choosing independent schools, including ways to reduce school fees. The Good Schools Guide, www.goodschoolsguide.co.uk, has similar links plus, for a fee, independent reviews of over 1000 schools. And don’t miss out on the school open days being run at this time of year. They give you a much better idea about a school than any glossy prospectus. We’ve listed local school dates, see right, to allow you to plan your visits.

Decisions, decisions, decisions! If your child is due to start primary school or move up to secondary school in September 2011 then now is the time to be filling in those admission forms and making some tough choices. Leave yourself plenty of time. It is not too early to think about primary schools as soon as your child has turned three. For secondary schools year 5 is a good time to start looking around. Applications should be made to your local authority, specifying your school preferences in order. These can include schools in other authorities. Most councils offer the option of applying online. Each local authority produces an applications guide which contains information about all state schools in their area including catchment areas, admission policies and open dates; plus details on how and when to apply for a place. If your child is eligible to start school in 2011 make sure that you register with your council to receive this guide and an application form. If your child is not at a state school and is in year 6 (or living in Wokingham and applying for a junior school year 3 place) you will also need to register. Online guides are also available on council websites. Don’t assume that you will automatically get a place at your local school. Many are oversubscribed and cannot take all the children from within their catchment area. If schools have more applicants than places then the school’s oversubscription criteria will be applied. For this reason never put just one school on your application. Use all your preferences so that if your first choice is not available you are more likely to be offered an acceptable alternative. Don’t be disheartened if you don’t receive your first choice school. Make sure that your child is added to the waiting list. These can move surprisingly quickly, particularly for secondary school. You also have the option to appeal against the decision. An excellent guide to this is ‘How to win your school appeal’ by Ben Rooney.

k, you’ve packed the carrot sticks and houmous, wholemeal sandwiches and a fruity snack…but is the lunchbox itself very healthy for your kids or the environment? Plastic bags, bottles and food wrap can potentially leach chemicals into food and drink - many countries have banned BPA’s and PVC from children’s toys and food containers. And don’t forget how much of the non-biodegradable packaging will end up as landfill - worldwide over 60 billion tons of plastic waste is produced every year. Never fear, all of the items on this page are all long lasting or re-usable, and don’t contain any harmful chemicals. So they’re perfect for a truly healthy lunch. cutlery is not only beautiful but also functional – it’s heat and stain resistant and does not impart or absorb flavours.

Day 2010
Visit Roald Dahl’s Writing Hut at Gypsy House
Spend a day at the museum
Cook up a birthday treat As you can tell by reading his books, Roald Dahl was fascinated by food. Who else could have come up with such mouthwatering and deliciously disgusting meals as Lickable Wallpaper, Fizzy Lifting Drinks and Stink Bug Eggs. So what better way to celebrate than to get hold of a copy of one of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Recipes series and cook up a special treat? What about Bruce Bogtrotter’s Cake, Hansel and Gretel Spare Ribs or Willy Wonka’s Nutty Crunch Surprise? If that’s not revolting enough then there’s always Mr Twit’s Beard Food or Fresh Mudburger? With step-by-step instructions and Quentin Blake’s illustrations they perfectly capture Dahl’s wicked sense of fun. If you need a little more guidance The Roald Dahl Museum (see above) regularly runs Revolting Recipe workshops for 6+yrs led by the chef at their Café Twit. There should be one running over half-term. Alternatively log onto the Roald Dahl Day website www. roalddahlday.info to find a recipe for Mrs Twit’s Eyeball Cakes – which have a sticky surprise inside! You’ll also find craft activities, quizzes, games and lots of other ways to party!
The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre is situated, very appropriately, in the village of Great Missenden, in Bucks, where the great man lived and worked for 40 years. Big celebrations are planned for Sunday 12 September with a jam-packed day of special events and activities, all overseen by Miss Trunchbull in person, with guided Village Trails, magicians, face-painting and behind-the-scenes archive tours. Members of the Royal Shakespeare Company will entertain visitors with Matilda themed storytelling, in anticipation of their production Matilda, A Musical, opening at Stratford in November. Roald Dahl’s beautiful garden at Gipsy House, a short walk from the Museum, will be open for the day. Visitors can take a peek inside the author’s famous Writing Hut and explore the maze and the Gypsy Caravan which inspired Danny the Champion of the World. The Museum is open from 11am-5pm and admission is £6 for adults, £4 for children. Admission to Gipsy House garden is free, with all donations to Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity gratefully received. For more information call 01494 892 192 or visit www.roalddahlmuseum.org

Clubs & Classes
Let’s Go Clubbing! Clubs and classes offer children the chance to develop a talent or interest, get some exercise, meet new friends and, most importantly, have lots of fun. It can be hard choosing between street dance and swimming, archery and athletics, so be guided by your child’s interests and personality. If they’re forever throwing themselves all over the sofa, consider a gym, football or trampolining class to focus their energies; if they’ve scribbled on the walls since an early age and carefully rearrange their fish fingers, carrots and peas into pretty patterns, then
how about an art class; or if they’re constantly beating out a rhythm on any available surface, then what about tap classes or drumming lessons? Our directory this issue is mainly for school-age children although lots of these classes take children from as young as 2. Activities specifically for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers will appear in our next issue so if you would like your class included please email us at editor@familiestvw.co.uk

Berzerk Productions Local performing arts company Berzerk Productions has lots to shout about. It is one of only 200 companies nationwide to be selected for the National Theatre Connections programme 2010. This annual celebration of youth theatre offers students the opportunity to perform a brand new play, commissioned by The National Theatre, on a professional stage. Recent LAMDA exam sessions saw 80 Berzerk students pass with Distinction or Merit, an amazing set of results. And a Berzerk Productions production of ‘Once Upon A Time’ the musical is currently in rehearsals and will be staged at The Oakwood Centre in December. With many companies now providing dance, drama, singing and performing arts, Berzerk prides itself on its affordable fees and innovative, creative classes that offer so much. The parent of one Berzerk student recently reported overhearing her son encouraging his younger brother to join: “Come on Jamie, I was really shy to start with but I look back now and I know that those classes with Berzerk made me really confident. I can do things in public now and talk to all sorts of people without being scared. I couldn’t have done it if I hadn’t done LAMDA and drama.” Berzerk classes for 4-18 year olds run at eight locations from Wallingford to Woodley. For more information please email enquiries@ berzerkproductions.com, call 07863 734 830 or visit www.berzerkproductions.com
