Climbing Trees in Roughwood… Can you remember the last time you climbed a tree? Do you have fond memories of building tree forts and having tea parties with the tree fairies? Although we all gained a few bumps, bruises and scrapes along the way, we were happy and free to discover a different perspective of the world. We often wonder how many of our children will grow up without ever having climbed a tree? At Jubilee Day Nursery we believe outdoor play experiences to be invaluable to a child’s development. Children naturally love to climb. At Jubilee Day Nursery children not only have opportunities to practice their climbing skills on low branches of trees, they are encouraged to scramble over logs, climb over the farm gates, negotiate their own way around the obstacle course, climb onto the swing by the stream or clamber up the bank. All these activities help children gain confidence in their own abilities. By providing an environment which encourages and supports children in taking safe risks, learn the consequences of their actions and discovering new adventures, helps children gain an understanding of their own skills and abilities. The joy they experience when they succeed
with a challenge and proudly announce ‘I can do it’ is just delightful. With access to over 40 acres of beautiful West Berkshire countryside, Jubilee Day Nursery has a wealth of stunning outdoor facilities which enrich the children’s learning experiences all year round. This autumn children at the nursery will be looking forward to trips to Roughwood, finding spider webs sparkling with dew, hunting for ladybirds and kicking the leaves as they begin to fall. If you would like your child to be a part of this amazing learning adventure or need more information, then please do not hesitate in contacting our Nursery Manager, Lesley Thompson on 0118 970 1600 or visit our website www.jubileedaynursery.co.uk Jubilee Day Nursery, Paddock View, Rectory Road, Padworth Common, Reading RG7 4JD

Get fit for maths
Getting your child (or mathlete) to do their times tables could soon be a whole lot easier, thanks to a new activity club called NumberFit. NumberFit sessions feature an innovative and fun blend of maths, team games and sport, combining academic and physical exercises in line with the national curriculum and are suitable for all children. It has been designed to stimulate both children’s minds and bodies, and is based on the proven link between physical exercise and academic performance in children. The aim is to make mathematics
enjoyable and allows the mathletes to associate the positive attitudes and emotions they have for the team games and sports with mathematics. This, combined with practice and repetition, leads to the natural consequence of improved attainment, which in turn feeds their confidence, resulting in the development of an essential skill set for mathletes living in an ever increasingly technical world, as well as keeping them active and healthy. “Like a keep-fit class meets a maths lesson meets a school sports day,” as one parent puts it. NumberFit is available for all children aged 3 to 11, with groups for pre-school and Key Stages 1 and 2. Classes are currently running in Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Berkshire. For more info for your child or school visit www.numberfit.com or call 0208 123 3996.

Six Spoons of Sugar Seventy-two years ago young Richard was bundled off to Berkshire from London to miss the bombs – now he’s captured it all in his evacuee book, Six Spoons of Sugar, and will be at Woodley Christmas Extravaganza signing the book and talking about those dark days of war. How the village kids made his life a misery, how he was caught in a Piretenflug or
Pirate bombing raid over Reading and, worst of all, seeing his Father arrested on suspicion of being a Nazi spy. Richard Holdsworth – now very grown up – will be at Chapter One book shop from 10am to 4pm during the Christmas Extravaganza on 4 December. He’d love to see you! www.holdsworthwrites.co.uk

Local mum-of-two Hannah Riches has banded together with friends and family to launch an exciting new venture in Caversham, Reading. Make & Do, based in its own shop in Prospect Street, offers an intriguing range of activities for all ages. Craft workshops give youngsters an opportunity to learn new skills, exercise their creative side and make unique and beautiful things to take home - everything from icing cupcakes to making jewellery or pencil cases, all within a fun and social environment. ”We’ve set out to prove that learning really can be fun,” said Hannah. “As a mum I know how quickly boredom can set in once the holidays start. We want to help children enjoy themselves while learning new skills.” Make & Do provides plenty of fun for adults too, with contemporary craft workshops and all kinds of party events. Work on your own project in the welcoming Sew Café or learn new skills such as knitting, jewellery or curtain making. Stock up on craft materials in the shop or hire a sewing machine to use in the shop. Hannah says there’s a seriously crafty side to her team at Make & Do – but they’ll ensure they also have fun at their fingertips. “We want to share our skills and the fun, so we’re hoping to see families coming along to see us, whether they want to simply sew a seam, knit and natter or cook up a cupcake!” Creative parties will cater for children’s birthdays, hen dos, baby showers, or any other excuse that customers can come up with to have a good time! Pop in to Make & Do at 40 Prospect Street, Caversham, RG4 8JL from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am-5pm. For workshop details call 0118 327 6717 or visit www.makeanddoworkshops.com

Volunteering
A life-saving role in the community On the 3rd October 2010, Fran Pearson, from Crowthorne, experienced every parent’s worst nightmare. Her 3 year-old daughter Penny, who was ill at the time with a virus, suddenly became unresponsive and turned blue. Thankfully, Fran was able to use the training and equipment that she had received as a volunteer Community First Responder to give vital emergency first aid to her daughter. “Whilst Penny’s dad was on the phone to the ambulance control room,” Fran told us, “I was able to administer oxygen and maintain an open airway for her until the ambulance arrived. Penny was taken into hospital and has since made a full recovery”. The South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) has around 235 Community First Responders in Berkshire. They are members of the public who are trained and equipped by the SCAS to attend a wide range of emergencies such as cardiac arrests, strokes, choking and seizures. The volunteers are dispatched, usually from home, by the ambulance control room and are able to provide life-saving treatment like CPR and defibrillation while the ambulance is on its way. Fran became a volunteer Community First Responder after giving up work as a Psychologist following the birth of her second child, Dominic. Her interest in emergency first aid, and her need to do something outside of the home, led her to take on the role. Fran currently covers between 32-40 hours a week, although she says it doesn’t stop her from doing anything: “I drop whatever I’m doing and respond to the call when it comes through. I mainly only cover nights now, and take the ambulance phone to bed, go to sleep and they ring me to wake me up if I’m needed. “As a CFR I’ve attended nearly 100 lifethreatening calls in my local community since I
Community First Responder Fran Pearson with her daughter Penny
started responding in April 2010 - from babies right through to the elderly. Having had this experience as a responder certainly gave me the confidence to deal with Penny when her life was at risk and she needed me to be able to help her. For this reason alone, I cannot emphasis the importance of having the skills, knowledge and confidence to deal with medical emergencies – you never know when these skills will be needed.” The SCAS are always looking for new Community First Responders, see box for details. Volunteers are also needed to help in other capacities such as fund raising. If you want to find out more about this vital, and potentially life-saving, scheme then visit www.scas-responders.info

Family Finances
Are the New Junior ISAs a good idea? To celebrate UK Financial Planning Week this November, Martin Bamford, a Certified Financial Planner CM professional at Informed Choice, takes a look at how your family could make use of the new Junior ISAs launched this month.
Following the recent closure of the Child Trust Fund (CTF), the Junior Individual Savings Account (ISA) was launched at the beginning of November. The CTF was available to children born between September 1 2002 and January 2 2011. It was a tax-efficient savings or investment account, with a generous contribution from government to get the ball rolling. Children originally received a £250 voucher (or £500 for lower income families) and this was used to open
a CTF account, with the money staying invested until the child’s 18th birthday. A further government contribution was made after seven years. Junior ISAs are less generous; with no government contributions it will be the responsibility of parents or other relatives to find the money to invest. With University tuition fees of up to £9,000 a year, it is important to save for young children if you want to avoid them getting into a lot of debt before they start their careers. Whereas parents and relatives could contribute up to £1,200 a year to a CTF, the annual contribution allowance for a Junior ISA will start at £3,600 a year. The money must stay invested until the child reaches 18, at which point they can withdraw and spend the cash however they please. On their 16th birthday, the child gains control over how the Junior ISA is invested. It is for these reasons that paying additional money into a CTF was sometimes unpopular. We often had parents saying to us that they would worry about their 18 year old child spending the money inappropriately in the future, perhaps on a motorbike or car rather than on their education.
There will be two types of Junior ISA when they are launched. Much like the ISAs available to adults, Junior ISAs will be either cash or investment. Children will be able to hold a cash Junior ISA and an investment Junior ISA, with different providers if they like, as long as the total contributions made to both accounts does not exceed the £3,600 limit in any single year. The choice between holding money in cash and actively investing it for the future can be tough. With a time horizon of up to 18 years, stock market investments might seem the obvious choice, as these tend to outperform cash over the longer term. However, parents will need to consider taking less risk with the money as their child gets closer to their 18th birthday. Leaving money invested in company shares when you are close to needing it is often a bad strategy, as short-term market crashes can cause real disappointment. In terms of eligibility, Junior ISAs will be available to any child born on or after 3rd January 2011, as well as children who are under 18 years old and born before September 2002. This means that every child under 18 who was not eligible for a Child Trust Fund will be able to open a Junior ISA instead. www.icl-ifa.co.uk www.financialplanningweek.org.uk

Thames Valley Parents offered advice on exercise for the under-5s Government health experts have, for the first time, issued exercise guidelines for the underfives. Their advice addresses growing concerns that modern lifestyles are reducing the opportunities for young children to be as physically active as they should, with babies and toddlers spending too much time spent strapped into pushchairs or car seats. According to NHS figures, nearly a quarter of children aged four and five are overweight or obese. Experts predict that by 2050 this could apply to 63% of children. A lack of exercise and physicality in young children has also been linked with delayed mental development. “For children that are not yet walking, there is considerable evidence that letting children crawl,
play or roll around on the floor is essential during early years,” said England’s chief medical officer, Sally Davies. “Play that allows under-fives to move about is critical and three hours a day is essential.” The recommendations include encouraging babies to move about and be active from birth, for example by crawling and rolling on activity mats or swimming. And once a child can walk, they should be physically active for at least three hours a day. Most UK pre-school children currently spend between two and two-and-a-half hours a day being active. Play such as running, chasing, swimming, climbing and riding a bike should all be encouraged, with time spent sitting in front of the TV and in buggies and car seats kept to a minimum.

One group of Berkshire toddlers has no problem getting active. Over 850 of them attend MAD Academy’s funky high energy music and dance classes where they can dance, run, jump, balance and have fun being physical. Even babies as young as 3 months get in on the action with specially designed classes which encourage early motor development. Trish Nawacki, who runs MAD Academy in Reading, understands the importance of physical activity. “Very young children need to move around and use all their bodies when playing. It’s the only way they can develop basic motor skills but it’s also essential for learning and even brain 14:22 Page 1 development. Children love the high level of physicality in our classes and the freedom to be active.” Classes run most days of the week all around Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell, Maidenhead and Henley. A special Saturday morning session is held at the Lady of Peace Church in Earley for working parents wishing to spend some MAD, fun, quality time with the kids. Visit www.madacademy.com for details or phone Trish on 01189 770 050.

Babies Go Swimming classes are held in Wokingham on Saturdays and Sundays and offer a fun and rewarding time for you and your baby. In the comfort of a warm pool, heated to 34 degrees, babies are taught to move freely in the water, promoting their water confidence. All babies are born with a ‘natural mammalian dive reflex’, meaning that with simple progressive training they can happily hold their breath underwater. Submersions allow babies the experience of swimming completely independently, similar to life in the womb. Learning to swim provides many social and
physical benefits, such as helping to improve strength, co-ordination and motor skills. Water safety is an important part of the program and babies learn basic essential lifesaving skills. Word association and songs and games are used, combined with patience, repetition, consistency and commitment, to make sessions enjoyable for all. And for lasting memories, every baby receives an underwater photograph and certificate of achievement. For enquiries and bookings call 0118 989 0543, email info@babiesgoswimming.com or visit www.babiesgoswimming.com

Get your skates on… And head for one of the outdoor ice rinks that pop up in London at this time of year. For sheer glamour try the rink at Somerset House, on the Strand, which is open from 22 November until 22 January. Set in the beautiful 18th century courtyard, if this doesn’t get you feeling Christmassy then nothing will. After dark the scene is very special, with atmospheric lighting and a Tiffany-sponsored Christmas tree glittering alongside. Like all the rinks it can be crowded, but it is definitely magical and worth a visit at least once in a lifetime. Afterwards, you can warm yourself up with hot chocolate and marshmallows or mulled wine in the café. On selected dates, there will also be free storytelling sessions beside the tree, with leading children’s authors reading from their own books. Alternatives include the Tower of London ice rink set in the dry moat and open from 19 November to 8 January. Combined attraction and skating tickets are available. Or, if dinosaurs are more your thing, try the Natural History Museum which hosts an outdoor ice rink and fair from 4 November to 8 January. Trees are covered in fairy lights and there is a small German style market and a café/bar with an outdoor balcony overlooking the action. Most rinks don’t have a minimum age but do check that the smallest skate sizes available will fit and use your discretion. For little ones, Bracknell ice rink might well be worth a visit first! Popular times can get booked up quite early, so check before you set out.

Survival Guide Christmas can be a stressful time - juggling everyday life alongside preparations for the big day, a busy social life and hyped-up children. So, if life is pushing you over the edge, do take a look at our next couple of pages. We’ve come up with some solutions to a few common problems that befall many of us over this season of goodwill. Problem: I really need some time without the kids under my feet to get everything ready before everyone arrives for Xmas. Solution: Book them into a holiday club for a day or two. They can let off steam and have a great time whilst you can restore some calm and serenity into your life. Jubilee Jets Holiday Club is an outdoor adventure holiday club based in Padworth Common that is open from 21-23 December, 8am-6pm. Jubilee Jets keeps children aged 4½ to 11 years happy and entertained during the school holiday. Contact 0118 970 1600 for more information or download a booking form from the website www.jubileejets.co.uk Or how about Edgbarrow Sports Centre, in Crowthorne, where Foxy fun camps for 3-6yrs and Club 7-11’s run from 19-23 December, 01344 776 211, www.bracknell-forest.gov.uk/be

Christmas Problem: What’s a girl to do when she’s got very little money but wants something really special to wear to a Christmas party? Solution: Lacking a Fairy Godmother to wave her magic wand, modern-day Cinderellas may find that the solution lies in a trip to Carousel Clothing in Caversham. This light and welcoming dress agency has just opened its doors, selling pre-loved women’s designer and top class high street clothes, shoes and accessories. It’s run by Sally and Cathryn, two local mums who have a real passion for clothes. They started running the business from home, but very soon the racks of frocks and handbags had outgrown Sally’s living room and, when suitable premises became available, they jumped at the chance to open their own shop. “In the current climate women still want to buy fabulous, good quality clothes but don’t have the money to pay designer prices,” Sally told us. “So we are offering them designer clothes at bargain prices.” Labels usually in stock include Paul Costello, Jasper Conran, Hobbs, Boden and Phase Eight. Carousel also offers you the chance to make cash out of your own clothes - those gorgeous pair of shoes that are just too high for you, the expensive dress that you can’t quite squeeze into any more. As long as they are designer or top-end high street brands, in perfect, clean condition and less than 2 years old, Carousel would be keen to stock them. Sellers receive 50% of the sale price with Sally and Cathryn donating a percentage of all their proceeds to Juvenile Diabetes Research. Carousel Clothing is open Monday to Saturday at 23 Prospect Street, Caversham, RG4 8JB. Tel: 0118 948 1001 or 07747 408 873.

Problem: My family celebrates Christmas very differently to my wife’s family. Now we have children we would like to start our own Christmas traditions. Any ideas? Solution: Every family has its own way of celebrating. A lovely idea is a Christmas Memory book. Buy a pretty book with blank pages, it doesn’t have to be expensive. On Christmas Day everyone present has to add something about their year to the book. It can be anything they like. Little ones can draw a picture – use it as a way of occupying them over lunch and recruit older children to help. Others could write about the best and worst things about their year. Take a photo, or photos, of everyone and stick them in, then store the book with the decorations until the following year. Over time, as everyone grows up and gets older, you will have a unique record of your family history.

Problem: This year we’re really short of money for presents but still want to give family and friends something special. Solution: Why not get creative and produce your own gifts. We’re not suggesting that you give Granny a junk robot – but if you pick the right craft or idea to suit your talent, a thoughtful present can outshine any new gift. • Frame your child’s picture – the right frame can do justice to any work of art, however abstract. • Get crafty. Make & Do in Caversham, offer lots of craft and sewing workshops where you can make jewellery, felt purses, cupcakes and lots more. Learn a new skill and create very personal gifts into the bargain. Call 0118 327 6717 or see www.makeanddoworkshops.com to find out more. • Make a family photo calendar. There are companies that can do this for you, but if you are a dab hand on the computer, you should be able to do it yourself. Grandparents love these as they provide a year-round reminder of their favourite people! • Decorate a piece of pottery. There are plenty of pottery cafes around where you paint a ready made piece of pottery. It doubles as an afternoon’s entertainment as well as creating unique presents. • Homemade chocolate truffles, jams or chutneys always go down a treat. And now is the perfect time to pick sloes from the hedgerows to turn into delicious sloe gin. Visit www.familiestvw.co.uk/sloegin for a recipe. Get the children to decorate some labels to stick on the bottles and you have a great gift for that ‘difficult to buy for’ uncle.

Health
Give yourself an energy boost this Christmas 4.
5. 6.
This time of year, it’s all too easy to reach for the caffeine and sugar to provide some much needed energy. However, the effects of this can be short-lived and lead to energy dips. Julia Charles tells us how to break the cycle and maintain our blood sugar levels. Firstly let’s identify if you are indeed experiencing irregular blood sugar patterns, do any of these scenarios sound familiar? • Skip breakfast then crave a sugary snack mid morning? • Often feel an energy slump in the afternoons and find yourself rushing for a caffeine fix and a sugary snack? • Find water boring and instead drink endless cups of tea and coffee just to keep alert? • Crave carbohydrates or sugary snacks? • Often experience a feeling of woolly-headedness or brain-fog? • Feel exhausted upon waking even after a goodnight’s sleep? • Feel dizzy, light-headed or angry if you haven’t eaten for a couple of hours?
If this sounds like your world and yet you feel helpless to change it – please, read on, it is easier than you think to take the necessary steps to support energy levels and reduce those exhausted feelings!
A few general tips:1. Drink more still water (at least 2 litres per day), less caffeine and ditch the fizzy drinks; this will improve your energy levels, concentration, skin, digestive system and balance blood sugar levels, to list but a few. 2. Be sure to eat breakfast; porridge, natural yogurt with nuts, seeds & prunes, tomatoes and avocado with wholegrain toast and a drizzle of olive oil, wholegrain toast with boiled or poached eggs or even just a banana with a handful of raw nuts and seeds is fine if that’s all you can manage. 3. Try to increase your intake of good, healthy oils and fats such as those found in oily fish,

unrefined olive oil, avocado oil and cold pressed flaxseed oil. Eat lots of vegetables, indeed, aim for 75% of your plate to be made up of colourful, seasonal vegetables; steamed, roasted, in homemade soups, stews and casseroles. Watercress and other leafy greens are highly beneficial too! Reduce the saturated fats from dairy products and meat. Increase your consumption of good, complex and unrefined carbohydrates such as brown rice, quinoa, wholegrain pasta (especially good are brown rice and spelt pastas), switch white potatoes for sweet potatoes and white bread for wholegrain freshly baked bread or even rye or spelt. Reduce alcohol consumption, especially on an empty stomach as this severely stresses blood sugar control. Remember though, be kind to yourself and go slowly. Small changes can have huge results – especially when you drink lots of still water.
So, if you are an adrenaline junkie, thrive on stress and a hectic pace of life, snack on processed foods, sugar and caffeine, the best advice would be to change your diet. You can of course have treats, just don’t live on them, then watch your energy levels, motivation and positive mood soar – not to mention a younger-looking you emerge. Restaurant Reviews
Bel & The Dragon Reading Blakes Lock, Gas Works Road, Reading RG1 3EQ 0118 951 5790 www.belandthedragon.co.uk
It’s rare to find a restaurant that is familyfriendly yet can also offer a high-quality dining experience in a charming setting. Just such a gem lies close to the centre of Reading, tucked away in a tranquil location beside the Kennet and Avon Canal. Housed in a former Victorian pumping station, Bel & The Dragon just oozes character with its vaulted ceiling, oak beams and exposed brickwork. The restaurant has just had a £½ million refurbishment and it shows, with a spacious and modern feel to the interior. We visited on one of the last warm days of the year and took full advantage by dining outside on the cobbled broadwalk, next to an authentic barge. Families are well-catered for with baby changing facilities and highchairs available. The children’s menu offers an interesting choice, reasonably priced at around £4-£6. Options included mini cottage pies, macaroni cheese and homemade chicken nuggets and fries. My son rated the chips the best he’d ever tasted - and he’s certainly an authority! The menu has been recently revamped with an emphasis on fresh, seasonal and sustainable ingredients. Starters included Pink peppercorn squid with chilli jam for £8
and Marinated Beetroot and Burrata with roasted pine nuts and fresh basil for £9. Being Sunday lunchtime all the mains were served with crispy roast potatoes. I had the Roast beef with Yorkshire pudding (£16) which was perfect and included a very interesting selection of vegetables – including multi-coloured cauliflower. My husband, with his arm in a sling, went for the easy-to-eat option of Sustainable fish pie (£9) which he declared delicious. Other options made use of the restaurant’s rotisserie and included spit roasted suckling pig for £17. If you were pushing the boat out, the wine list included a range of champagnes and cocktails but we settled for a very palatable glass of house red. Other bottles start at around £18 with many sold by the glass. To finish off we hit the pudding menu hard. First place went to the delicious warm chocolate fondant, closely followed by the vanilla cheesecake with strawberries. The only small criticism was the addition of chopped mint to my son’s Eton Mess which wasn’t mentioned on the menu. We really enjoyed the food and the laidback vibe and will definitely return.
Glo 62/63 St Mary’ Butts, Reading RG1 2LG 0118 959 9025 www.glohq.com If you have a little Christmas shopping in Reading planned think about popping into Glo in St Mary’s Butts. That’s exactly what we did on a busy Saturday in October. We enjoyed relaxing in the laid-back surroundings. Glo offers an interesting Asian twist on international cuisine, including an impressive grill section, noodles, pizzas, salads, curries and even dim sum. There was something to suit everyone. The children’s meals were an excellent size and we especially enjoyed the aromatic chicken noodles. The children received a kids’
pack which included chopsticks, crayons, an activity sheet and a novelty toy. The chopsticks were excellent fun and kept our daughter amused throughout the meal. We settled on a ‘sharing platter’ to start so we could have a taste of everything. It was a generous portion. We followed with an Indonesian Rendang and Pesto Chicken Breast. The Ice Cream Money Bags, a deep fried ice cream wrapped in oriental pasty, polished off our meal. Glo run an excellent value family offer for 4 for £24.95 with two selected curries, noodles, pizzas or salads and two kids main and two kids drinks, everyday until 7pm. Or use the voucher below to enjoy a free kids meal.

Travel
Are we nearly there yet? The Christmas holidays often mean interminable car journeys as families undertake the regulation end-ofyear visits to far-flung relatives. Car sickness, emergency loo stops on the hard shoulder and endless cries of ‘are we nearly there yet?’ – travelling with small children can send you screaming for the hills. Author Ben Hatch offers some tips to help make the experience less painful for all the family. 1 Always carry treats. Travelling with children minus treats is like walking through a vampire-infested grave-yard after midnight without a wooden stake. You might survive, but why take the chance.
something beginning with P,’ where the p is then capable of being anything in the known universe unobservable from your car. Our kids once spend two hours guessing the word gnu.
2 Enthuse your kids about where you’re going. Although never oversell the destination as we did visiting the Wensleydale Cheese Visitor Centre. On the strength of a Yorkshire Tourist Board leaflet featuring Wallace and Gromit sticking their thumbs up, we rashly promised life-size models of the cartoon characters wandering around. The only thing Wallace and Gromit related was a chalk outline of them on the café’s specials board. We’d driven two hours to a working cheese factory, where the kids had little interest in the processes of milling and tipping.
4 Adapt well-known children’s

as there’s nothing consistent to see from a speeding car window except the road, others cars and the sky. Instead play I-don’t-Spy, as in ‘I don’t spy with my little eye
stories into tales involving your children themselves. You can do this by replacing the main character’s name in a classic fairytale with your child’s name so that for us it became, for instance, Phoebe and the Three Bears (‘And then Phoebe tried the mediumsized bowl of porridge…..’) or Hansel and Phoebe (‘And the wicked witch told Phoebe, I will eat your brother be he fat or thin.’). The thrill of an ego-centric toddler hearing themselves thrust into unlikely adventures involving beanstalks, glass slippers and evil witches buys valuable time.
Consequently despite watching Finding Nemo 10 times during our 8,000 mile trip round Britain the kids are still unaware Nemo was eventually reunited with his father.
6 Lie about how far it is. As a rule of thumb under 50 miles is always “round the corner.” How far dad? “Round the corner.” Over 50 miles then divide how long it will take to get there by 4. Thus an hour becomes 15 minutes. You must divide by 4 again if this still meets with disappointment. In fact repeat this division by 4 until your child says, “That’s around the corner.”
7 Colouring-in books and pens provide a welcome distraction. Although be careful - our daughter, protesting about an arduously long drive through the Pennines after a day out at Ostrich World once employed the toddler equivalent of self-harming. She drew all over her face and arms in black felt tip. Indelible pens are a bad idea.
chart. It’s insane. Put it this way, if I had a choice – my brakes or the sat-nav - I’d gladly drill a hole in the driver’s footwell and start using my feet to slow down. Having a sat-nav means brain cells required to remember to turn right or left at particular junctions are more usefully re-directed towards establishing just who in the back was the first to slap the other one round the face with the Corfe Castle activity sheet.
9 Finally, if all else fails, and it probably will, we suggest turning Classic FM to maximum volume and kidding yourself you aren’t muffling the kids’ din with an even louder one, but that you’re actually educating them about Haydn.
bk Good luck. Classified
8 Not to have a sat-nav today is a bit like being a sailor in the 14th century trying to round the Cape of Good Hope without a nautical
Are we nearly there yet? - 8,000 misguided miles round Britain in a Vauxhall Astra is a true story of two adults, two kids, one small car and five months on the road. When Ben and Dinah saw the advert looking for a husband and wife team with young kids to write a guidebook about family travel around Britain, they jumped at the chance. Bored, broke, burned out and turning 40, the trip conjured up naïve visions of staring moodily across Coniston Water and savouring Cornish pasties. The reality included bizarre encounters with celebrity pyjamas, deadly snakes and a friend of Hitler. Are we nearly there yet? by Ben Hatch is published by Summersdale and is available from all good booksellers or via www.summersdale.com £8.99 ISBN: 978 1 84953 155 9
