JRR Tolkien ring goes on display at The Vyne An ancient gold ring rumoured to have inspired Tolkein to write The Hobbit has gone on display for the first time at The Vyne, near Basingstoke. The ring, which was dug up in a farmer’s field in Silchester back in the 18th century, is linked to a Roman curse tablet unearthed much later, in 1929. Tolkein, an Oxford professor of AngloSaxon at the time, was consulted about this stone tablet, which refers to the ring by name and to the fact that it was stolen. He began working on The Hobbit just a few years later – so did his knowledge of this ancient treasure inspire ‘The One Ring’ of his books? For many years the large gold ring lay almost forgotten in a corner of a room at The Vyne but a new exhibition room, created in partnership with the Tolkien Society, now tells its incredible story. Younger visitors can study the ring up close as it revolves inside a large magnified display tube, and learn more about the curse laid on the thief who stole it. Children can vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to whether or not this is ‘The One Ring’. There are children’s activities to get stuck into, a dressing up wardrobe

area, and ‘gold’ rings to take away. Outdoors, children can enjoy the Hidden Realm, a new adventure playground inspired by the landscapes of Middle-earth. Encompassing elements of jungle, mountain and stream, the Hidden Realm has at its centre a network of turf-covered tunnels, with sound tubes for communicating. A wooden fort and bridge, wide slide, trickling stream and limestonebordered sandpit surround the tunnels. A giant warrior’s helmet lies half submerged in the ground and thickets of bamboo and

ferns provide jungle-like hiding places. Explorers can also follow The Quest Trail. Designed in the ancient style of a Tolkien Middleearth map, the trail takes visitors to all the family sights around the estate, from the friendly hens in the walled kitchen garden, to the woods, and lake-side bird hide. Inside the house, children are invited to hunt out the dwarves (and dragon!) hidden throughout the rooms, solving riddles and puzzles along the way. New classes for Hartbeeps Hartbeeps, sensory play and music sessions for the under 5’s, is launching in more locations this spring as a result of a rise in demand for its classes across Berkshire. Franchise-owner Liz Smale has also been nominated as the most outstanding activity leader for under 5’s in the South for the second year running in the What’s on 4 Awards.

Liz said, “This has been an amazing year for Hartbeeps, and with demand outstripping supply we are training up new teachers to take our magical music classes to other locations including Sunninghill, Ascot and bringing more sessions to Bracknell. We are very excited for the year ahead, and are very thankful to our loyal customers”. For further information, please email berkshire@hartbeeps.com or call 07985 935 662.

School News New Educational Psychologist Service from Fleet Tutors Currently 10% of the British population are dyslexic, but too often this is not identified at school. Many dyslexic children are very bright, but can struggle to fulfil their potential in the classroom if problems are not properly identified, or through a lack of resources or of understanding. Due to growing demand from parents, Fleet Tutors, a supplementary education service provider, has now extended its range of services beyond tutoring to include independent educational psychologist assessments to identify dyslexia, dyscalculia and other learning difficulties. These assessments will help parents and pupils address their difficulties within the school environment and before the child loses confidence. Assessments are conducted by a fully qualified member of the British Psychological Society, with over

twenty-five years’ experience and a comprehensive understanding of various learning difficulties. Appointments are available now at Fleet Tutor’s West London and Farnborough offices. With thirty-five years’ experience helping students of all ages achieve their goals, Fleet Tutors operates a network of over 5000 qualified, experienced tutors across the country. For more information on Fleet Tutors’ services, visit www.fleet-tutors.co.uk or call 0845 644 5452.

Wildlife trust criticises planned changes to National Curriculum Plans by the Government to change how environmental issues are taught in state schools should be dropped according to a local wildlife trust. The Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) is calling on the Education Secretary Michael Gove to reinstate ‘learning about the environment’ in the National Curriculum. Chief Executive Philippa Lyons said: “Removing caring for the environment from the National Curriculum will deprive children of the immensely valuable opportunity to learn about the natural world around them in practical and fun activities. If children don’t have connections with the living world around them, how are they going to understand and tackle

the problems of climate change when they’re adults?” The Trust looks after 80 nature reserves and runs environmental education centres at Woolley Firs, near Maidenhead; College Lake, near Aylesbury; and Sutton Courtenay near Didcot. Steve Backshall, wildlife television presenter and President of the Trust, is passionate about encouraging children to learn about nature. “They need to feel, experience, touch and smell the natural world; hold frogs, beetles and millipedes in their hands and feel mud squelching between their toes. This was how I was turned on to the outdoors as a kid, and all the top naturalists I know are the same.” Find out more on the Trust’s website at www.bbowt.org.uk

Free educational visits to a working farm Enjoy the pleasure of learning in the countryside. Waterside Farm, situated close to Thatcham Railway Station, is a 300 acre farm with horse livery that offers educational visits free of charge to groups of school-age children (minimum of 6 children). Sophie Holland, who organises the visits, told us: “I would particularly

like to tell home educators about this opportunity as I feel that they would benefit a great deal. The farm can offer something for most subjects and I can either tailor visits to the group or will do specific subjects on a set date.” Sophie is happy to talk about various farming and farming related issues. Activities could include looking at what

School News New Primary Schools for Wokingham Borough Building work has started on three new primary schools in Wokingham Borough designed to ease the squeeze on school places caused by a rising birth rate and new housing development. The single-form entry schools are being built in Charvil, Winnersh and Wokingham and will each accommodate a reception class, a food science room, six new classrooms, a library and ITC area, and a hall. The facilities have also been designed for community use. The schools will each take 30 new children every September, reaching their full capacity of 210 pupils in six years. The Piggott School will run the site at East Park Farm in Charvil. Hilary Winter, head of The Piggott School said: “We’re extremely pleased that another building block is now in position which is going to allow us to proceed with the Charvil Primary School for September.” Additional school places are also being created at Shinfield Infants and Junior School and Grazeley Parochial School.

Holme Grange – Open a World of Possibility!

How to learn the times tables Games to reinforce the multiplication facts

by Elisabeth Dolton

Learning the times tables is an important skill that is the foundation for all maths. Children are expected to be able to master their tables up to 12x12 by the age of nine and teachers need parent’s help in getting children to learn the basic principles. Finding a pain-free method of learning times tables is not easy, but these tips and techniques should help you. Start with explaining the concept If your child understands that multiplication is repeated addition, they will have an easier time learning them. Using objects such as crayons, illustrate a simple times table such as 3 x 2. Make two groups of three crayons, then count the crayons. Continue until they understand that multiplication is just adding a series of numbers, 6 x 4 means 6 added together 4 times (6 + 6 + 6 + 6). Create a number line from 0 to 100. Show them the pattern to working out each multiple, i.e. the three times table answers are every third number. End by encouraging them to write out the times tables on paper, using addition, up to 12.

Show them the tricks of the trade Now they need to start learning the facts, rather than by counting. Learn the tricks of the trade first, e.g. any number times by 10 is the number with a zero on the end, e.g. 10 x 5 = 50. They are all listed on www.mathsisfun.com/tables.html

After your child has a basic knowledge of the tables, games will help instil the recollection of correct facts quickly. Multiplication Bingo, Hoo Ha!, Know Your Times Tables and Math Whiz are great board games. There are a whole host of multiplication computer games – multiplication.com, Learn-timestables.com, themathsfactor.com, mathsisfun.com, mathsgames.org, and computer apps such as Squeebles, Ghost Blasters and Multiple Wipeout. Another idea is to print off worksheets from Multiplication.com or math.about.com

Keep it fun

Further ways to help them memorise Your aim now is to recite memorised facts quickly and in any order. If your child is a visual learner, purchase or make flashcards. Write the problem, like 4 x 9, on the front, and the answer, 36, on the back. Buy or create a times table poster and display key facts. Times tables raps and music CDs are great for an auditory learner. Chant the times tables as multiples 0, 5, 10, 15, etc. and also as sentences 1×5=5, 2×5=10, etc. Say difficult times tables in a funny voice, a squeak or a whisper. Use helpful rhymes to remember really tricky ones, e.g. 8 x 8 = 64 becomes “He ate and he ate and he sticks in the door, eight times eight is sixty-four”. For a kinesthetic approach, add actions. Children can clap, stamp or jump on the difficult fact. Play ‘Knock, Knock’ – knock your fists twice on the floor, then put out the number of fingers of a times tables. The winner is the first to say the answer.

BEARWOOD COLLEGE

Your continued energy and enthusiasm is very important – go at their pace and always praise their efforts. Aim to reward your children with every bit of progress made; it doesn’t have to be material things, just a bit of fun together. Take breaks often, relax, give lots of ‘high fives’, and real compliments.

And keep it up! After memorising times tables, it can be all too easy to forget them! Don’t give up too soon. It can take six or seven weeks until the facts are truly automatic. Practice quick-fire drilling. There are numbers everywhere, so multiply the digits in number plates or in recipes. Print out a times table square and keep a record of the tables your child knows well, so you know which ones you need to focus on. Whichever method you choose, there is never a truly pain-free answer because real fluency requires real practice over weeks and months. That said, it is important for your child to have a secure knowledge of the times tables with instant recall - their future maths skills depend on it. So take the challenge, make it happen, and enjoy it!

The ultimate me-time

Mindfulness has become the buzzword in the world of health and wellbeing. Helena Foss explores what the fuss is about and how busy mums can fit it into their day. Over at Bangor University you can do a degree in mindfulness, academics there describe it as ‘paying attention on purpose moment to moment without judging.’ Yes, women have the vote and legalised equality, but while we’re busy proving our worth to the world at large and overturning patriarchy, we’re slowly but surely burning out. ‘Having it all’ has really transpired into ‘doing it all’, which is why we all need to schedule in pure nothing time on a regular basis.

Human doings or human beings? This might appear unproductive, but there’s great value in stopping being a ‘human doing’ and practising the forgotten art of simply being. Most of us, at some point in our lives, have had a standstill moment in time – maybe watching a beautiful sunset, looking into your newborn’s eyes for the first time, or even hearing heart-breaking news that you know will change your life forever. In that instant, we’re so immersed in the moment that time itself slows right down. Now, this is the point of mindfulness practice; to be so present that time actually stretches, a little like Blu-tack, opening up space in your mind.

Mindless chatter Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), the NHSapproved treatment of choice for depression, works to change the negative thought loops which trigger emotional distress. Indeed, most of us identify so closely with our minds that we

PAGE 16

Thames Valley West

believe the stream of mindless chatter that forms the running commentary to our lives is who we actually are. But if you listen closely, you’ll notice that a lot of it is, well, a load of old nonsense: judgements, opinions, shoulds, what ifs and if onlys. Endless self-criticism, worrying about the future, pining over the past, arguing with someone in your head, anything except relaxing

If you have three minutes: According to Goldie Hawn’s book 10 Mindful Minutes, a recent American study found that just three minutes of mindful breathing three times a day is enough to strengthen the brain and effectively change stressful thought patterns. Again, the key is regular practice.

If you have 20 minutes: Transcendental Meditation is a popular technique that involves repeating a personalised mantra silently to yourself. To find teachers near you visit www.t-m.org.uk

If you have 40 minutes: Sometimes we’re so full of tense energy that it has to be released before our minds will calm down, too. The trick is to find any physical activity that you enjoy and let your body take over and find its natural rhythm. This will naturally clear your mind, then sit for a few minutes afterwards and practice mindful breathing.

into the moment that is happening right now and letting everything be exactly as it is. The magic of mindfulness is that simply observing our thoughts without judgement (which really does take practice) can, over time, actually change them – no effort required. Using willpower to, for example, lose weight, rarely works, as any yo-yo dieter will tell you. Rather than forcing yourself into a strict health regime, in the long term it’s more practical and effective to observe your behaviour and compassionately notice the deeper, subconscious thoughts and emotions driving the urge to overeat. Not necessarily easy, but It does work.

Getting started Just like learning to ride a bike, mastering the art of mindfulness takes practice. Once you have the knack, however, you’ll be able to call on it whenever you have a few spare minutes. To get started, find some quiet time and practise sitting with a straight back, feet on the floor (cross legged if you prefer) and notice your breathing, how the air feels as it touches the insides of your nostrils, your chest rising and falling. Random thoughts will distract you time and time again. This is normal, the idea is to witness thoughts that come and go without getting caught up in them. Keep bringing your attention back to the breath. If emotions arise, give them space and just let them be. Once you have the hang of it, you can make any and all mundane daily activities mindful: while washing-up become as present as you can to the sights, sounds and sensations of that moment; feel how your feet touch the ground while walking. Just notice and simply be… Helena Foss is a hypnotherapist, mum and writer: www.helenafoss.co.uk

Parties

Birthday traditions - make some magical memories Copyright Oksun70 fotolia.com

by Elisabeth Dolton

Make the approach to their birthday important. Hang a garland of seven envelopes, each with a small daily goodie, leading up to the grand finale.

2. Decorate and Titivate The night before your child’s birthday sneak into their room and decorate it with a special sign wishing them a Happy Birthday. Blow up balloons and put birthday wishes all over the house. Buy proper birthday banners or bunting when they are little and you will get years of use out of them.

FDA approved, nonallergenic materials. Experienced, friendly & reliable service. 07505 104 376 www.facesbysarahmaie.co.uk

Birthdays aren’t just about the party. To make your child’s special day truly memorable why not create some fun family traditions that you all know about and look forward to every year. Children love familiarity and knowing what’s coming next and you’ll be helping to create magical memories for them that will last a lifetime. We have collected 12 inexpensive and clever ideas that can make your children’s birthdays special year after year. 1. Big-Day Countdown

PARTY! PARTY!

Farms2ewe Mobile Farm For educational visits and fantastic farm parties, please call 01635 579878 or 07780654348

5. Have a ‘birthday’ plate Have a special plate that each child uses for meals on their birthday. The same could be done for a birthday eggcup, a special seat at the table, or a hat that they have to wear all day.

6. Opening presents Hide presents around the house and provide clues to help your child find them. Follow a ribbon to their first gift, or unroll string all around the house that will take them to their presents.

3. Bake a cake

7. Celebrate them growing up

Make a birthday cake instead of buying one. Your child will appreciate even a simple cake made from a mix. Get your child to decide what they want their birthday cake to look like – most have very definite ideas on this! Some like the same cake year after year – in our house it’s Nigella’s Malteser cake.

Create a photo banner of your child’s annual photographs. Take a family photo on the same settee every year and put them in a scrapbook that you add to every year. Ask them their favourite colour, ice-cream, hobby, etc. and add these to the book. You and your child will have a lovely record of their childhood.

4. Have a special meal

8. Capture the moment

Have breakfast in bed awakened by the whole family singing happy birthday. Create a beautiful tea party to enjoy with finger sandwiches, little cakes and tea. Or let the birthday child pick the dinner menu however crazy their wishes.

Get out the camcorder and interview your child about the special things they have done that year, include props like their award-winning science project that year, their sports trophies, the self-portrait they did of themselves and so on.

9. Special family events Do the same walk every year, have dinner at your favourite restaurant or have a picnic at the same location. Do activities that are typical of what you are like as a family, for example, if you are a musical family, hold a concert, if you are outdoorsy plan a boat trip.

10. Annual additions Plant a tree or flowers that bloom annually around your child’s birthday. Ask grandparents to add to a charm bracelet or commemorative coin collection each year.

11. Tell a Tale Let the birthday child stay up a little later after the other children have gone to bed and tell them about the day they were born, and how you felt when they arrived.

12. Remind them of how special they are

Fun Fair Party Bouncy castles, roundabouts, swingboats, candy floss and more www.fairandfete.co.uk 07836 605032

A simple way is to give each member of the family a birthday candle, then pass around a small dessert. Each person puts in their candle and tells the birthday girl or boy something they love about them. They pass the dessert to the next person, who does the same until everyone has added their candle, then light the candles and sing Happy Birthday.
