Volunteers needed to offer support to West Berkshire families Home-Start West Berkshire has more than 40 volunteers visiting local families at home each week. Supporting parents in situations such as isolation, bereavement, multiple births, illness, disability or those who are just finding parenting a struggle. They provide non-judgemental practical and emotional support and help build the family’s confidence and ability to cope. If you have 3 to 4 hours per week to spare then why not volunteer to join them? Volunteers encourage, listen and offer practical support. They become a trusted friend and

mentor of the family, to help them move forward. Two courses of preparation for new volunteers are run every year. The course runs for 30 hours, one day per week over a six week period and has the option of being accredited. If you are a parent and feel you have time to offer then the next course will start on 1 October 2013. If you are interested or would like to discuss this further please call 01635 760310 or email office@home-startwb.org.uk More information can be found on the website www.home-startwestberks.org.uk

Holme Grange - Where awe and wonder are part of the curriculum Holme Grange School is an independent school for girls and boys aged 3-13 years. Set in 21 acres of Wokingham countryside, it offers a unique educational journey in an idyllic setting; delivering a creative experience, sporting prowess and academic excellence. Pupils are prepared to succeed in an ever changing, competitive world; equipped with the confidence to 'have a go', the courage and self-belief that they 'can', the persistence to keep going and the resilience to 'bounce back'.

St Edward’s School St. Edward’s is a small and highly successful independent boys prep school. Achieving excellent results in academics as well as sport and the arts. The quality of teaching and care at the school has been described by the Independent Schools Inspectorate: “Guided by a comprehensive programme of topics and activities, teachers’ pastoral care of their pupils is outstanding. Strong relationships between staff and boys lead to mutual respect and trust.” The boys develop a strong sense of confidence and independence and because of the small class sizes they are challenged to make better than average progress. The school has operated successfully in very much the same way for the past 80 years and continues to ensure that pupils make above average progress and have a love for all aspects of education in a caring and nurturing environment. “We moved our son to St. Edward’s mid-way through Reception as he was becoming increasingly bored and despondent. After only a few weeks we got our little boy back, he’s now dressed and ready to go before me, I have never seen so many boys so eager, excited to learn and to be at School, they are all polite and most noticeably, there are always plenty of smiles.” Year 1 parent

Children’s emotional intelligence is given equal value to their academic progress; developing empathy and understanding as every child is valued and they thrive in an environment where strong pastoral support and a sense of community are given the highest priority. Life at Holme Grange is a journey of exploration and discovery as the school strives to inspire, develop confidence, provide opportunity and realise potential in every child.

Waverley Prep celebrates outstanding SAT’s results

Exciting new developments at The Abbey

Waverley School were proud to celebrate the fantastic results of their Year Six last term. After some hard work during the test week and a nail biting wait the pupils were delighted to receive their SATs scores, most of them at Level Six. It is unusual for a non-selective school to be able to achieve results of this calibre but Waverley’s nurturing of the potential in pupils and challenging them to achieve their very best is the key to their successes. This is accomplished within the supportive, family environment that Waverley is best known for so not only do the children excel academically, they are also very happy too. Head Teacher, Tammy Howard said “We are thrilled that our pupils have achieved these exceptional results. The expected level for 11 year olds is a Level Four, yet our pupils achieved an astounding 60% Level Sixes in both the Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling test and in their Maths paper. 100% Level Fives in the Reading paper shows what great all-rounders they are. We are very proud of them all.”

Firm Foundations lead to success at St Neot’s Preparatory School Pupils, parents and staff at St Neot’s celebrated an outstanding EYFS inspection in the 125th birthday year. Set in over 70 acres, St Neot’s is very much a family school where children are allowed to enjoy their childhood in a safe and secure environment where happiness is viewed as a key contributor to success in all areas of home and school life. An outstanding education at St Neot’s gains

access for children to their choice of senior school, and the number of scholarships is testament to the firm foundations and excellent teaching that takes place. The Governors recently announced the appointment of joint Heads, Maria Lloyd and Peter Withers, who will lead the school from September in the next exciting phase of its development. They have a wealth of experience

Parental prep for entrance exam season by Fleet Tutors Children may have to take the exams but it also requires a battery of skills and knowledge from parents to make sure their children reach exam season possessing a quiet confidence and self-belief, secure in their English and maths knowledge and well-practiced in exam techniques. Start early is the mantra you’ll hear from parents who’ve been through the experience. Whether you use a tutor or do-it-yourself, a steady structured programme prepares a child, not just for exams, but for the big changes they face when they start ‘big’ school in year 7. Don’t lose sight of your child in all of this. Focus on what they are doing right. Confidence drives self-belief which encourages learning and also establishes an outlook that will serve them well throughout life. www.fleet-tutors.co.uk

The benefits of Explore Learning An independent study into the effects of Explore Learning membership has recently been published by The University of Reading. The study tested 1,539 Explore members compared to a control group of children who did not attend Explore, and found that: “Explore Learning members’ improvement in maths was 30% higher than that of the comparison group.” The study also found that “Building confidence, overcoming shyness to put up their hand to ask for help, being more independent and less reluctant to try without assistance were all elements that parents recognised in their children and directly attributed to Explore Learning.” To read the full report, visit www.explorelearning.co.uk/efficacy

Develop your child’s study skills with Kumon At your local study centre, Kumon offers individualised maths and English study programmes which are tailored to all ages and abilities. Established for over 50 years, the Kumon programmes enable children to develop their study skills and confidently tackle advanced work. Through the maths and English programmes, Kumon will nurture your child’s independent

study skills, so they can apply this approach to all subjects and outside of school too. Kumon develops children through the acquisition of independent learning skills, rather than teaching in the conventional sense. Your child will therefore be equipped with the ability to learn for themselves so they do not become dependent on – or limited by – the skills and

knowledge of others. There are numerous study centres locally including Henley (0118 986 6911), Reading West (0118 948 4281), Tadley (0118 970 1684), Thatcham (0118 971 3985) and Twyford (0185 354 4968). For more information, or to book a Free Assessment, call 0800 854 714 or visit www.kumon.co.uk

Which school is right for my child?

Our Lady’s

Preparatory School & Day Nursery ~where every child can thrive~

1.

even look round a school because of what they’ve heard. A school that doesn’t suit another family could be just right for yours. You’re bound to talk to other parents, and you want to talk to other parents, but don’t get pulled along by their tide. Do your own research and develop your own views: knowledge is power. When choosing a secondary school you should of course take into account your child’s feelings.

We are an independent, co-educational setting for children aged 3 months -11 years. All our children are nurtured and encouraged to learn and develop in a warm, caring and happy environment and to grow into self assured and confident young people. Pre-Prep and Prep School Reception – Year 6, transparent inclusive fee structure of just £500 per month. Onsite teacher-led wrap around care available 51 weeks at no extra cost. Small class sizes of no more than 20 children. Specialist teachers for 3 languages (French, Spanish, Mandarin), Forest School, swimming, cookery, music and football.

3.

Listen to your instincts. Don’t get bogged down in the detail: what you’re aiming to get is a sense of the school. Does it feel happy, productive, calm? Is there a sense of order and caring? These things matter more than the nitty-gritty. If a school doesn’t feel right, move on.

4.

Think about your child’s talents and interests. Consider carefully whether they’ll be catered for, but think too about what the school offers that might be harder to pick up at home. We’re a family of journalists, where literacy is easier for us as parents; so I’m glad my girls went to a school that specialised in maths and science, even though these weren’t their strongest subjects.

Use open days wisely. If you can, go to a daytime visit because you’ll see it in working mode. Remember nothing advertises a school like its pupils. Do they seem happy? Are they polite? If you have time, hang around in the area at home time. Are they well-behaved? How about the staff – do they seem happy and fulfilled working there? Take opportunities to chat to them. Pay attention to what’s on the walls – and not just the artwork. What are children being warned about, or encouraged to do? Are there any school visits being advertised? What clubs seem to be thriving?

Children from 3 months to 5 years on a full or part-time basis, operating from 8am until 6pm, 51 weeks of the year. Activities include: Forest School, Jo Jingles, 3 languages, crafts, story time and messy play, whilst incorporating Early Years Foundation learning goals.

Make your own mind up. It’s amazing how many parents never

Look at the school’s league tables, but don’t pin everything on them. Read the Ofsted report too and pay particular attention to how the school has done over time. If it’s had a dip, are there signs of improvement or suggestions that it could turn round? Where do pupils go on to from this school? You want to see at least some youngsters doing well academically and aiming for good courses at top universities. SEPtEmbEr/OctObEr 2013

It may seem a long way off but parents with children due to start or move schools in September 2014 need to be applying soon for school places. For many it can be a difficult and stressful decision to make so, to help you get started, Joanna Moorhead gives us her top 10 tips on choosing the right school for your child.

6.

Go to the head teacher’s talk and take your notebook. This is an important part of an open day: not only do you need to pick up on the head’s attitude and values, but you also need to pay special attention to anything that’s said about the entrance criteria. Understanding that is the crucial next stage.

7.

Do your homework about the entrance requirements. However much you love the school, and however much you think your child would thrive there, you’ll only get a place if you fulfil the criteria. Read the school’s entrance policy through very, very carefully. If you don’t fulfil the requirements, could you change something so you do? If not, move on: there’s no point in wasting a choice or railing against something you can’t change.

8.

9.

Take time and care with your application. When the time comes to fill in the forms, allow yourself lots of time and do it extremely carefully. There may be supplementary forms, and there may be complicated arrangements for giving them in (especially if you’re applying to faith or selective schools). If you find it all too confusing, talk to your child’s primary teacher or primary head, or call the education department at your local authority. Have a plan of action for what you’ll do if you don’t get the school you’re hoping for. Just having that plan will make you feel more relaxed. And remember, there’s usually a lot of movement in the first few weeks after places are allocated, and many children get in from waiting lists.

10. Keep telling yourself (because it’s true!) that there is no perfect school. Every school has strengths and weaknesses. There’s more than one school that can be right for your child. Remember that, at the end of the day, parents make more difference to a child’s future than a school does. Even if your child doesn’t get into your first choice of school (and one in seven didn’t last year) your attitude to that could be a much bigger factor in what happens next for your child than the school itself. Have confidence, first and foremost, in your child. And believe that, together, you will work things out if and when you come up against problem

Halloween Fun

Turn your little Angels into Monsters! Professional face-painter Jenny Quille of Funky Faces offers her advice on creating your own little monsters at Halloween time. If you are holding a party or event then hiring a professional is a great way to add that little bit extra to celebrate this spooky occasion. Or perhaps you will be going ‘trick or treating’ – in which case you might like to have a go yourself. The beauty of face-painting is that it’s fairly easy to do and you will achieve an effective look within minutes! Face-paints are readily available to buy from most party, craft and toy shops as well as various party sites on the internet. It’s probably best to

buy a smaller pack which includes at least two different colours and you will also need a brush and sponge to apply the face-paint. Remember as it will be a dark night it will be good to have two contrasting colours on your design. Glitter and fake blood can also be used to complete the finished look.

Remember to… Take care when using darker colours such as red or black as they can sometimes stain the skin as well as clothes.

Spooky Witch

As a note of caution it is advisable not to paint on children under three as their skin is still young and is more likely to develop a skin reaction. They are also more likely to rub the paint off or even eat it! Be careful with children who have sensitive skin or suffer from eczema. In most of these cases it is probably best to avoid painting on the face until the skin has settled down. Alternatively a hand or arm design can work just as well. For hygiene reasons make sure your model has a clean face and do not apply face-paints if your model has any cuts, sores or infections. Here are my step-by-step guides to two simple designs – a pumpkin and a witch.

Petrifying Pumpkin

1 Take the sponge and dampen slightly. If too wet then the design will ‘streak’, too dry and the paint will be uneven when applied. Sweep the sponge over the green paint making sure you get a good amount of coverage. Sponge the colour starting at the forehead and work your way down the face. Get your model to close their eyes (and their mouth otherwise it will end up on their teeth!).

2 Once the base colour has dried, either sponge or paint yellow on the eyelids. You can now begin to add in more detail so using black on your paintbrush - paint the eyebrows and lips. Then add a flicked line from the outer edge of each eye.

3

4 Paint a cobweb on one cheek. Finally paint the other cheek with stars and a moon and sprinkle some glitter in key areas to finish off your design.

1 Take a damp sponge and evenly cover the face in orange.

2 With your brush, using a darker colour such as red (or orange mixed with a little black), paint in the pumpkin’s lines, around four should do.

3 Now load up your paintbrush with black and paint in triangles over each eyelid. After this add in a smaller triangle for the nose and then paint over the mouth to form a wide grimace.

4 Still using the black, paint a pumpkin stalk at the top of the forehead together with some curly leaves. Paint this in using green and then complete the look by adding some glitter on the leaves, nose and mouth.

… and Finally Make sure you thoroughly wash all brushes and sponges after use and let them dry naturally in order to prevent bacteria growing. As most face-paints are water based they are easily removed with soap and water or babywipes.

Funky Faces offers face-painting and glitter tattoos for parties and events. To make a booking or for further details please contact Jenny on 07976 671309 or visit www.funkyfaces.co.uk

Pregnancy

NCT’s top tips for a healthy pregnancy n Getting ill during pregnancy

To help expectant mothers enjoy those precious nine months, here are NCT’s top ten tips for a smooth and healthy pregnancy.

Your immune system is suppressed during pregnancy in order to protect your foetus from being rejected by your body. This unfortunately means you are more susceptible to every bug in the book. If you are ill, contact your GP and drink plenty of fluids and eat foods rich in Vitamin C which helps to fight infections. Rest when you need to and keep your stress levels to a minimum.

n Vitamins and Supplements Taking 400 micrograms of folic acid each day before you become pregnant and in the first three months can help prevent birth defects. It is recommended that you also take 10 micrograms of Vitamin D each day throughout pregnancy.

n Drinking and smoking during pregnancy

Many women start pregnancy with low iron stores or are slightly anaemic. Your blood will be tested at your first appointment, and you will be advised to take iron supplements if you need them. Good sources of iron include red meat, kidneys, fortified breakfast cereals, bread, pulses such as baked beans and kidney beans, eggs and green vegetables. Extra Vitamin C will help absorb iron from food.

n Exercise Exercise during pregnancy helps keep you and your baby healthy, and prepares your body for labour. Avoid contact sports like horse riding, skating, skiing, and cycling which are not recommended after the first three months due to the risk of falling. There are many home based and external exercise classes for pregnant women.

n Pelvic floor exercises During pregnancy, increasing pressure is put on the muscles of your pelvic floor. The effects of the hormone relaxin encourage these muscles to relax in preparation for labour. It’s therefore important to exercise your pelvic floor muscles regularly. Continuing these exercises after

n Pregnancy nutrition

pregnancy can help prevent long-term problems such as involuntary urination and postnatal stress incontinence.

n Drugs and prescriptions Avoid taking over-the-counter medicines for yourself such as paracetamol or ibuprofen with codeine without first checking with your doctor or pharmacist. Always tell your doctor, pharmacist, dentist, or anybody else advising you on your health, that you are pregnant and check with them before using any homeopathic remedies, aromatherapy preparations or herbal oils.

n antenatal depression If you feel that you are tired all the time, have lost interest in yourself or your pregnancy, always feel down or anxious or angry, or can’t sleep, then

you may have antenatal depression. It is important to talk to either your midwife or GP if you feel depressed, so that they can help you.

n Travelling/flying while pregnant It is recommended that you avoid flying to an area which will require you to have a vaccination. Most airlines will require a certificate or letter from your GP if you plan to travel 28 weeks and onwards in your pregnancy. Be sure to drink lots of water and pack a supply of vitaminrich fresh fruit to snack on throughout the journey. If you are close to your due date and you are travelling within the UK, visit www. nhs.uk/servicesearch to find your nearest hospital, should you need it.

Don’t forget to tell advertisers you heard about them in

Current government guidelines advise that women should stop drinking alcohol during pregnancy altogether. If you don’t want to do this, it is recommended that to protect your baby you should not drink more than 1 or 2 units of alcohol once or twice a week and shouldn’t get drunk. Smoking while pregnant can harm your unborn baby. If you are unable to give up completely, cutting down the amount you smoke during pregnancy will help to reduce the risk to your baby.

n Bodily discomforts Back pain is incredibly common in pregnant women. Keep an eye on your posture: straighten your lower back and gently draw your bump in. Wear flat or low-heeled shoes and try to sit up straight with your lower back supported. Many women also suffer from heartburn, indigestion or constipation. Drink plenty of water and include plenty of fibre in your diet to prevent constipation. To avoid the symptoms of indigestion, try eating smaller meals more often. Heartburn is often caused by lying flat so sleeping propped up can help. For these and more tips for a healthy pregnancy, visit www.nct.org.uk

After-school activities definitely offer value to your children. Reports indicate those who participate in after-school programs have better school attendance, higher grades and loftier aspirations. They’re less likely to get into trouble and are at lower risk of obesity. It is also a great opportunity for children to develop social and leadership skills. The benefits are there, but under which classes? Talk to your child and find out how they feel about the activity, and let them choose at least one club or activity themselves. Help them choose activities that reflect who they are and what they want to learn, don’t impose your preferences. Explain that it’s important and fun to try new things, and remember switching activities is normal amongst children. Always check out the quality of an activity. Discipline-based activities that create a quality product over a period of time are great, e.g. putting on a play. Don’t think that high cost equals high quality, some activities are cheaper to run like football. Staff members should be professionals with skills and experience. Consider the mix of activities. The benefits of exercise are huge, so including a sport would be

Practical Considerations Think ahead. You may need to put your child’s name on a waiting list, particularly for more popular classes Great staff. The best leaders are enthusiastic, skilled, trained, and have eyes in the back of their heads to spot children who need a little more encouragement, particularly when they are new and might feel shy

Thames Valley West

a good start. Extracurricular activities are ideal for children to explore and practice what it means to be a group leader, e.g. Brownies. If you are stuck between two similar activities, consider the usefulness, e.g. drum lessons might be cool, but the guitar might have wider applicability. Finally, remember logistics. The after-school programme affects you too. Avoid signing on to too many activities that leave you scrambling from one to the next. No one will have fun doing anything if it means arriving late, leaving early, and going without dinner on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Look hard for places you can walk to, it reduces your carbon footprint while keeping you fit for free! Finally do build in some downtime. Children need to have independent play as well as the structured activities, so ensure time is built in for dinner, watching T.V. and relaxing. Leave some activities perhaps for the summer, when different interests can be tried, without the pressure of school demands. After-school activities can provide enrichment, adventure and variety. They can enhance knowledge and build character. Spend a bit more time choosing the right activity programme for your child and you will reap the benefits.

additional costs. Will you need specialist clothes or equipment? Does the club offer these second-hand? Are there subscription or insurance charges? How much are exam fees? Look-see. Many clubs offer a free trial class. If that’s not possible, ask to pay weekly for the first two sessions Give it time. Some children are prone to dropping out. Unless you think they are completely and utterly unsuited to the activity, or really, really hate it, stick it out for at least a couple of terms.

Health and Nutrition

Help, my child won’t eat!

If you’ve got a fussy eater, meal times can soon become a battleground. Dietitian Marianne Tomlin looks at how to combat the problem.

• Keep meal times at a regular time and if possible keep your child sitting at the same place. When a baby, ensure the highchair is supportive; ‘rocking’ chairs tend to hold the baby’s head too far back and increase the risk of choking. A supportive highchair, or even car seat, is a far better way to start the child onto a journey of happy eating. • Don’t make the evening meal too late. Dinner at 6pm and then bed at 7pm is too late for a young child. Dinner should be nearer 4pm; if you can’t bear the thought of eating at this time, sit with them and have a cup of tea so that at the very least they still have the social part of the meal. • Be a good role model. If you don’t eat a range of vegetables and or consider fruit an appropriate snack, nor will your child. Offer one meal for the whole family, and don’t prepare alternatives if the first meal was refused. Fussy or picking eating seems to affect most children to some degree, normally around the age of 18 months to 3 years, so if you’re at this stage remember you’re not alone. Some fussy eaters develop a secondary issue relating to their selective eating patterns, such as poor growth or iron deficiency anaemia, but in the majority of cases the most common side effect is huge parental anxiety. So why does the child, who was lovingly weaned onto a range of foods and ate them without batting an eyelid, suddenly turn into a toddler who is point blank refusing your homemade lasagne? There are several possible explanations. At the end of their first year, a child’s growth rate slows down. This invariably means they need to eat fewer calories for their body size. At the same time, the child is often starting to take on a sense of independence – perhaps the fussy eating is coinciding with the battle to perform any menial task (putting shoes on, sitting in their car seat or pushchair, the list goes on). They might also be busy learning new skills, such as crawling, walking, and talking. Sitting down to eat a meal is quite inconvenient and temporarily stops them playing and learning about their environment.

Refusing food is another way for them to exert themselves (as well as a way to get some attention). How long and entrenched the problem becomes depends a lot on how it is managed from the early days; and in fact if your child is not a fussy eater, the following advice should stop the problem occurring (or at least limit how long it continues).

• Introduce your child to family meals early on. When you’re weaning your child, try to include them in a family meal, perhaps lunchtime. This way your child will learn from you; how to eat, that the foods you’re eating are safe; and that mealtimes are a social time of the day when the family gets together. When your child is eating, give them lots of attention, smiling and praise. Children thrive on your attention and ultimately want to please you.

• Limit meal times to 20 or 30 minutes only. If your child hasn’t eaten what you consider enough by this point, making them sit there for another hour will only lead to both of you becoming more frustrated and upset. Never force feed by holding your child’s arms down and pushing the spoon into their mouth.

Find healthy recipes at www.familiestvw.co.uk/food

• If at first your child refuses the food, reintroduce. Studies have shown your child may need to be offered a food at least ten times (some children more) before they accept them. • Ignore food refusal behaviour. Children thrive on your attention, and if there’s no positive attention, negative (shouting, arguing, bribery to eat) will do. This will only reinforce the poor behaviour and hence the fussy eating will become more entrenched and difficult to break. If you’re anxious or tense your child will pick up on this, so don’t make a fuss; take the plate away without comment and let them get down from the table. In some children, when the fussy eating has continued for a very long period of time, their growth can be affected and they can appear very tired. If this is the case, speak with your GP who may need to run some routine bloods to see if your child has become anaemic and start some iron treatment.
