Successful established magazine franchise

FOR SALE

After 6 years as the helm it’s time for us to move on as our children are at secondary school and will soon be off to university and we are sadly no longer as engaged with young children as we used to be. So, we are looking for someone who will take on our much loved and cherished magazine. Ideally you would be a parent looking to have an interesting and varied business of your own that gives you independence whilst still being flexible enough for you to spend the time you desire with your own children. No previous experience is necessary just common sense!

“A rare opportunity to run a fun, family-friendly business with established local website and local media”

There's none of the hassle and hard work of starting from scratch, instead you can take advantage of a large and loyal client base and start earning from day one. Families TVW was launched in 2002. points already set up in the area plus our designer will also continue to work with you if you are interested in having a designer as part of your team. In addition to a highly successful magazine, we have the most successful local website in the Families group with in excess of 22,000 hits per month and growing. Kool Kidz Kutz An exciting new salon has just opened in Reading specialising in funky hair for cool kids. At Kool Kidz Kutz experienced stylists offer cutting edge styles in a fun and laid-back atmosphere that children will love. Parents can relax – and maybe even get their own hair done whilst their children play. Owner Hayley Wall is on a mission to bring fun and adventure to hairdressing in Reading. She already runs the Funky Barnet salon at Cemetery Junction but her daughter gave her the inspiration to concentrate on a younger market. She told us: “My little girl suggested I should open a salon with toys and cars especially for children, so she could go to work with mummy. I was so impressed by her imagination that I looked online and saw how big children’s salons were in America. It seemed to be just what Reading needed, so I decided to give it a go.”

The new salon is just a few doors up from the Funky Barnet, with plenty of free parking at the back of Eastern Avenue. Hayley has over 23 years of experience all over the world and loves all aspects of hairdressing, particularly training her excellent team of stylists. She enjoys developing new ideas and has represented England at Wella HQ in Geneva where she was involved in product development and research into hair products. Kool Kidz Kutz also offers children’s parties and the salon provides the perfect space for children to run around and to enjoy a spot of pampering. Reading is the first town in the country to take on the challenge of walking or cycling together 238,857 miles – the distance from Reading to the moon. The walking game will run between 1 May and 4 June and follows a successful pilot scheme held in Caversham last year. Pick up a Beat the Street card from your local GP practice, Reading Museum or Reading libraries and leisure centres and register there or online. You can take part as an individual or as part of a team, and be in with a chance to win a whole host of prizes. Every walk can be recorded by swiping your Beat the Street card against one of the 130 specially

designed walking sensors called Beat Boxes. These will be placed on lamp posts across Reading - from Whitley to Caversham, East to West Reading. Players and teams are able to monitor their progress via a secure website, which also includes a trail map showing the location of all the Beat Boxes. Alongside the fun and the chance to explore your home town, there’s a serious purpose to the challenge. The local NHS groups who are funding the project hope participants will get into the habit of taking more exercise and by doing so enjoy huge health benefits. First ‘Rainbow Run’ comes to Berkshire

Nice and ‘jumbly’ jigsaws Few children fail to be enchanted by the adventures of Sophie in The BFG or Charlie Bucket after he scoops a golden ticket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory so these new 100-piece jigsaw puzzles from Gibsons are sure to be a whizzpopping hit. As children piece the puzzles together, Quentin Blake’s famous illustrations are brought to life, revealing these much-loved characters. The new Roald Dahl collection is made from top quality, 100% recycled board, so children can enjoy recreating the scene over and over again – or frame the finished picture to hang in pride of place on their bedroom wall.

On Sunday 22 June, Berkshire’s first ‘Rainbow Run’ will take place at Prospect Park in Reading to raise money for the local children’s hospice, Helen & Douglas House. This unique fun run is just 3km long and is much less about speed and much more about enjoying a colourful, enjoyable day out with family, friends and colleagues. What makes it unique is that you will be showered with powdered paint from head to toe all the colours of a rainbow during the run. With no winners or official times, the run caters to anyone and everyone from 2 or 80 years old. Poppy Hanbury, Activities Fundraiser from Helen & Douglas House who is organising the event said: “’The ‘Rainbow Run’ is a unique event that reflects the magical place the hospice is and the joy and laughter it brings to so many local families. It is about happiness and living life to the full and is a perfect way to have fun and raise money for a great local charity at the same time.” Entry fees are just £7.50 for under 16s and £12 for an adult. There will also be an opportunity to raise money for Helen & Douglas House through sponsorship. Places are limited so signup today by emailing fundraising@helenanddouglas. org.uk, calling 01865 799 150 or visiting their website www.helenanddouglas.org.uk

Senior School Open Morning

Children in year 6 will be sitting their SATs exams shortly and the pressure is on with extra homework and lots of focus on revision. Some children will be feeling anxious and worried but parents can really help by keeping things in perspective. Yes, many secondary schools do take SATs results into account when putting year 7 pupils into sets, but nearly all retest children in September and many reset again at the end of year 7. Remember too, that your child will perform better if they are relaxed, and they will only relax if you do. Photo © kolett - Fotolia.com

So in the run up to SATs, what can you do? Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep with regular bedtimes; and build exercise into your daily routine – it’s a great way to release tension and boost mood. A good breakfast on the day of any exams is important too. Bear in mind there are only a few weeks left and they will already be working hard at school so don’t overload them. If they want to do a bit extra just concentrate on one or two areas where they need more practice. It can help to run through exam techniques with them as sometimes lack of technique trips up a child, however well prepared they are content wise. • Remind them to read the whole question. Many pupils get caught out by not reading a question in full. A good way of doing this is to underline the key words. • Advise them to skip difficult questions and go back later if they have time. Even a confident child can get thrown if they get stuck on an unfamiliar problem. Remind them there is no rule that says they have to answer any question. Moving on to questions they can do will stop the panic setting in, and they won’t waste time and forfeit easy marks elsewhere. • Reinforce the fact that they should show all workings out in Maths because they can pick up marks for method even if a calculation error means they get the wrong answer.

• In reading comprehension, remind them that three mark questions will mean they should give fuller answers than one mark questions. This seems obvious to an adult used to sitting exams but is not always to a child. • Tell them if time allows when they have finished the paper, they should check their work. It gives them a chance to correct any silly mistakes and can mean additional marks. Finally, but most importantly of all, reassure them that you don’t mind what result they get as long as they have tried their best.

If you have a school age child, you’re probably familiar with the eye rolling and sighing that greets any mention of the ‘H’ word. Robina Cowan gives us some tips on how to help.

What is homework for?

How to help

Tempting though it might be - in order to hurry up the process, it is not the chance for you to show off how much you remember from your schooldays and do it for them! Homework is set:

Show an interest in your child’s work; point them in the right direction rather than telling them the answer; offer a snack and a drink while they work. Here are more tips from the experts - the teachers.

• For children to practise, reinforce and extend work that is taught in class • To enable teachers to find out whether or not pupils have understood the lesson • To help children develop skills of independent time management • To show what children are able to produce under unaided conditions • To encourage pupils to understand that school work does not finish when the school day ends and that responsibility for working continues beyond the classroom • To develop a strong work ethic. The answer from experienced teachers is a resounding “yes!” One told us that “the improvement in a young child whose parent is hearing them read for 15-20 minutes a night is fairly astronomical compared to those who don’t, and the improvement carries right up to ages 7 or 8, by which time children are usually reading fluently.”

Homework diaries Most schools give out homework diaries, making it easier for parents to see what has been set, when it should be handed in and providing a way for teachers and parents to communicate. If your child is taking longer than the expected time to do their homework, or if you had to explain how to work out the set maths, make a note in the homework diary so the teacher knows about it.

Should parents get involved?

• Be aware of where and how your child works best. Some children need quiet, others prefer people around them. Some want to start their homework as soon as they are home to get it out of the way; others are better after a snack and a half hour ‘chill’. • Show a positive interest and monitor what is being done. Is it too much? Too little or rushed? Communicate with the school if you have concerns. • Extend schoolwork with visits to museums and exhibitions these offer so much that can bring subjects to life in a way no amount of books or websites can do. • Ask your child if she is pleased with her homework (before leaping in to point out all the mistakes!), and offer praise where it is due - for example the work is neat, or well written, or answers the question really well. • Time management is one of the hardest aspects for a child to get to grips with - but they’ll need to when it comes to sitting exams. Give your child a timer set for the duration of the homework and see how much they finish. Initially it can help if you remind your child when they are halfway through the time, and again when there are ten minutes left. This is

good training and before long they will have adjusted to how much work they can produce in the allotted time. • Children who have been sitting at desks for most of the day often need to let of steam after school. A run around the park on the way home can dispel restlessness before settling down to homework. • Set a positive example. Other members of the family can use homework time by taking up their own studies or settling down to a focused activity (such as sorting bills/ reading the paper/ ironing) at the same time.

Nurturing the gift of French bilingualism Being born in a family with dual culture is a wonderful gift – but could it be a double edged sword? For those children lucky to grow up in a bilingual family, it is necessary for their complete development to focus not just on oral, but also writing and reading abilities. It is about preserving their identity and future chances, all the way to University and beyond – but also it’s as simple and basic as understanding their gran. There is a stage where children are naturally resistant to the ‘second’ language; parents should persevere but might find it

easier if there is outside help, an environment where children hear others naturally speaking another language. This is why La-Récré have decided to offer the opportunity to French speaking families in and around Reading to develop their children’s French, from as young as 3 - the younger the better. Simultaneous learning of two languages ensures best results, but equally it’s never too late to build on the ‘gift’ of bilingualism. Find out more about this fantastic opportunity at www.la-recre.co.uk or call Sophie on 07770 998 044.

Family Life

Moving on …. Muddling through a house move The average family moves 8 times in their lifetime and anyone who has re-located knows just how stressful it can be. Families magazine editors have come up with some helpful advice to make sure your next house move goes without a hitch. Prepare the children If they are very young don’t assume they understand what a house move is all about. As one mum recalls “We moved house when my son and daughter were six and nine years old. Although we did talk with them about moving, it wasn’t until they asked whether they could take their toys with them that we realised we hadn’t made it clear that we were only selling the building; they thought we were selling the house with everything in it.”

Read all about it A good way of preparing young children is to read stories about moving, such as Topsy and Tim Move House. If you do that when your own house is on the market, it gives your child time to become familiar with the idea before the time comes to move out.

Old friends and new Moving within your local area without changing schools is easier than when you are moving to a totally new area. When moving further afield older school age children will naturally be upset – and often angry - at the prospect of leaving their friends behind. Listen to their fears and be endlessly patient and positive about the move (however you are feeling yourself). Explain how they can keep in touch with old friends while making new ones. Children are very adaptable and the likelihood is they will settle in and have firm friendships a lot sooner than you will, but they need to vent and they need your reassurance.

a smooth move is in the planning: Declutter: Don’t move your junk from one house to another. Take the time between selling and moving to do a thorough clearout. Removal companies: Get several quotes; they can vary hugely in price. Decide whether or not you are going to do your own packing. It doesn’t cost a lot more to book the removal company to do it for you; and they will do so efficiently, and should insure your possessions against breakages. If you are pregnant when moving, need to move quickly or have loads of belongings, it is definitely recommended. Change of address list: Do this in advance and have your letters or e-mail ready to go out before you move. Don’t forget to inform official bodies such as the DVLA, pension and ISA providers and TV licensing. There’s a useful checklist you can find by clicking ‘Moving’ at www.bbc. co.uk/homes/property Even if you think you have everyone covered, it’s worth setting up a redirection with Royal Mail to catch anyone you’ve forgotten. Utilities: If you plan to take over the previous owners’ gas, electricity, telephone and internet providers, you will both need to inform them. Switching providers will take a little longer so add this to your plan. Insurance: You need to make sure you have insurance on your new home from the day you move into it.

Pets: They too can get stressed with moving house. Make a plan in advance to ease their transition. Helpful websites include www. dogstrust.org.uk and www.bluecross.org.uk Your new life: Did you know that there are over 40 Families magazines right across the country just like this one? Go to www.familiesonline.co.uk and click on ‘locations’ in the toolbar. Choose the region you’re moving to and voila - instant, up-todate information about your new area!

On the day Utilities: Don’t forget to take utility readings before leaving the house - and take new readings at the new house. Mobile phone: Make sure your mobile is fully charged in case there are any last minute snags to sort out such as getting keys from the estate agent. Essentials kit: One mum says: “The best advice we were given was to pack a separate box for the car containing the kettle, tea, coffee, milk, mugs and chocolate biscuits so at least when we were in the midst of chaos we could make a brew for ourselves and the removal men.” Bedtime: “The first thing we did when we got in our new house was to make the beds so later on when exhausted and tired we could just fall straight into bed,” advises another mother. It’s a good idea to put any special sleep ‘blankies’ and cuddly toys on your child’s bed ready for them, and to unpack a few familiar toys from their own special box to make them feel at home.

A toast Once they’re asleep, crack open the cava you’ve done it!

Familiarise yourselves If the sellers are amenable, take lots of photographs of the new house so your children can get used to what your new garden/ kitchen/ bedrooms will look like. Streetview the area so you can show them the local parks, the route to school etc.

Make a plan Once your house is sold you can breathe a sigh of relief that you no longer have to run around stuffing toys back in cupboards to make the house presentable for viewers, but then sit down with a cup of coffee and make a plan. The key to

Playtime

playing musical instruments. Due to their absorbing nature, it has even been shown to help children develop their concentration and perseverance skills. Create an obstacle course in the garden. Create time targets and challenges (i.e. do the course on just one leg!). Give craft activities a purpose, for example, create posters for an Easter egg hunt or party.

Play with objects

Touching, sorting, building and making objects encourages children to organise their thinking and helps them learn how to solve problems. Children have to pick the right strategy to complete the task, and then stay on track to complete it. Creativity comes in here, as does the use of language, as children often talk to themselves when they broach these tasks as a way of organising their thoughts. Get your children to build their own skyscraper. Arm them with different materials to build at home or in the garden.

Symbolic play

Artistic activities such as drawing, dance, and even developing silly rhymes, gives children Moccis www.moccis.co.uk

Physical play Most parents would recognise that physical play (such as running, climbing and gymnastics) helps a child develop their whole body and handeye co-ordination and is important in building strength and endurance. But it also provides a crucial means for children to develop their emotional intelligence. Encouraging children to get physical isn’t just about letting them loose outside; it’s also about creating opportunities at home. So encouraging play through things like craft activities helps children with their fine motor skills, essential when it comes to learning to write and even

the opportunity to develop their language and interpretation skills as they start to decode what is going on around them. It can even make them nicer! A study in 2010 of almost 100 four yearolds found that children who take part in music making were more likely to show cooperative and helpful behaviour. Get your children to create their own music compilation for their best friend or family member. Encourage them to add their own tracks for that special touch.

Pretend play Pretend play can have a serious side too. Dressing up and playing with dolls and miniature figures gives children the chance to rehearse some of the scenarios they already see or might face in their future life, whether it’s expressing how to care for someone (such as their favourite doll) or tackling aggressive situations. Make a challenge to act like a member of their family, or their favourite TV character for a day. It might be their mum, Homer Simpson, or Daddy Pig!

Playing with rules

We live by rules and playing by the rules in sports, board games, card games and computer games helps children adjust to the reality that they cannot always do, say, or act how they wish to. The use of electronic and computer games by today’s children is another particular area of anxiety for parents and teachers. Too much screen time obviously prevents your child from doing the range of other activities that is beneficial to them, so keep these tech tools in your armoury, but restrict the time used on them. There is some evidence that well-designed videogames can enrich play resources for children and their families. Many parents are concerned about videogame overuse but the key is to make it interactive. So get involved! Challenge them to their favourite game in return for them participating in an activity of your choice. Dr Whitebread supports National Science and Engineering Week, an annual event that aims to raise awareness of the important role that science has in many aspects of our lives. www.britishscienceassociation.org/NSEW

Parties

With help from Joanna Moorhead

It’s party time! A birthday party is the highpoint of the year for most children – so the pressure is on to get it right. But how do you find out which party is right for your child? The traditional party What is it? An at-home for the birthday child and friends, with traditional games like pass the parcel (always a winner), pin the tail on the donkey, and musical bumps. Who’s it suitable for? Great for nursery and reception age children, but don’t neglect its values for older kids, especially girls of eight or nine who often enjoy nothing more than inviting their friends back to their house and having a girly time. The pros: It’s cheap (or at least, it certainly can be); other parents often stay to help you out, keep you company, especially if you promise a glass of prosecco to help everyone through. The cons: You may need to redecorate afterwards; you’ll certainly need to do a major tidy up. It can be difficult to keep your birthday child’s siblings out of the way, which could lead to conflict. Top tips to make it work: 1. Throw in a few games they might not have played before. Doughnut eating competitions - thread ring doughnuts onto string or a washing line at the correct height and eat without using your hands: chocolate eating competitions - but using only a knife and fork: and the Mummy game - teams use loo roll to wrap a child to create the best wrapped Egyptian Mummy. 2. Have a timetable for what’s happening when but be flexible as activities can take more or less time than you expect, e.g. keep a few extra games up your sleeve. 3. Think about a project such as build a bear kits, jewellery-making or pirate games. If your budget extends to it a professional entertainer will take the pressure off. 4. For tea, spread a huge paper tablecloth on the floor or in the garden and get them to sit around the edges of it. At the end, simply fold it up with all the rubbish inside and bin.

The action party What is it? Go-karting, dance, swimming, sports, bowling etc. Who’s it suitable for? Slightly older children especially those with lots of energy who enjoy racing around. The pros: Your house remains intact; the kids have something to focus on, and lots of opportunities to let off steam. The cons: It can be expensive; although some options, such as a swimming pool party or trip to an adventure playground, can be good value. Top tips to make it work 1. An outside party, such as paintballing, obviously doesn’t work so well in the winter months so it might be best to postpone to the spring. PAGE 16

Thames Valley West

2. Take plenty of water, squash, snacks including fruit - they’ll need plenty of energy for all that running around. 3. Make ABSOLUTELY sure you’ve checked all restrictions, e.g. height restrictions, beforehand - there’s nothing worse than finding out on the day that one of your guests is too small to participate. 4. Make sure you get parental consent forms signed well in advance - the venue will require you to do this before they allow you in.

The church hall party What is it? An indoor party in a hired venue. Who’s it suitable for? Children of five plus, who are confident about being left somewhere they don’t know. The pros: A lot more space than they’d have if you were at home, plus no risk of your best carpet having mud and party food ground into it. The cons: You’ll have to leave the place spotless afterwards, and pay for any damage. It may not be as warm and welcoming as your home and the catering facilities may not be ideal. Top tips to make it work 1. Try to find somewhere with outdoor space as well in case it’s a lovely day. 2. Ask if you can borrow/use playgroup play equipment. Alternatively, the Lend & Play Library hire out equipment for a very reasonable price, see facing page. 3. Have lots of help, and have tea reasonably early in the afternoon so you can get it tidied away before the end. 4. If you’ve got the budget, consider hiring some entertainment - the extra space will make it a lot more fun. Musical games, dancing, drama, discos etc. are great in church halls.

The soft play/gym party What is it? A party at a soft play centre, gym or leisure centre that includes a play on the centre’s equipment and/or bouncy castle followed by tea in a themed or decorated party room. Who’s it suitable for? Pre-schoolers to primary school age children who enjoy being active. The pros: A very easy party for parents and great fun for kids. Centres usually provide a host and often offer a range of food and extra entertainment options such as face painting and party games. The cons: It can be expensive but offers good value for busy parents with little time to organise a birthday bash. Top tips to make it work 1. Make sure the venue is suitable for the age of the children – some cater only for little ones. 2. Check what catering options are available. At some leisure centres and gyms you will have to bring your own party tea, but this does make them cheaper. 3. Don’t forget the cake (plus candles and matches) unless this is provided of course. 4. Certain venues are VERY popular and you may need to book up well in advance. Check when booking opens for the date you would like and get in there fast! And finally...whatever sort of party you’re having don’t neglect the party bags; leaving them out is pretty much social suicide. Funky, bright cellophane bags can be filled with pots of Play Doh, toy dinosaurs, seed packets, hair clips or mini books and tied with a ribbon attached to a glitter filled balloon. Or have a lucky dip, where each child picks a present and cupcake as they leave - simple but effective. MAY/JUNE 2014

Beautiful One of nature’s most spectacular displays is coming to a wood near you very soon. The bluebell has been voted Britain’s favourite flower, and it’s easy to see why when you visit woodland carpeted with these lovely flowers. Their distinctive sweet scent and intense blue colour is truly magical. Around half of the world’s bluebell woods can be found here in the UK and their spectacular appearance in late April and early May attracts nature lovers from all around the world. We are lucky to have some of the best sites close to home, so why not take the opportunity to get some fresh air and enjoy a family walk in the countryside? Before you go why not print out some activity sheets for the children from the Nature Detectives website (www. naturedetectives.org.uk )? There are lots of spotter pages to help you identify trees, flowers and animals, ideas for outdoor play and lots more.

Here are a few of our favourite bluebell walks: Warburg Nature Reserve This magical reserve nestles in the Chilterns near Bix, between Nettlebed and Henley. Pop into the Visitor Centre to pick up the Wildlife Detectives Trail Pack and head off into the reserve for a wonderful time discovering birds, butterflies and spring flowers such as primroses, as well as carpets of bluebells. An organised Spring Bluebell Walk is being held around the Nature Reserve on 3 May from 10am-12noon. Suitable for adults and older children, 7+yrs, this free event needs to be booked. Bluebells under threat

Eddie Catz Newbury

Loss of habitat, climate change and, above all, the continuing spread of the invasive Spanish bluebell mean that our native bluebell is under real threat. The Spanish bluebell was introduced to British gardens many years ago, but escaped and cross-bred with the UK’s native variety. The resulting hybrid plants tend to be more vigorous and can quickly take hold in woodland, resulting in the pure English variety, with its beautiful scent and intense colour, being squeezed out.

Native bluebells have a strong sweet scent and intense violet-blue flowers that droop down like a bell along one side of the stem

The Spanish bluebell is a paler blue and is more upright with flowers on both sides of the stem and little scent

We can all play our part in helping to protect these iconic plants. When visiting bluebell woods please take care to leave them undamaged for others to appreciate their unique beauty.

Spring Walks

Bluebells Moor Copse Nature Reserve Moor Copse has an unusual variety of habitats alongside the River Pang where you might be lucky enough to hear a water vole plop into the river. Take the woodland walk to enjoy the bluebells and then stroll through the hay meadow, where in June and July you can see a colourful mosaic of wild flowers. Find Moor Copse on the A340 at Tidmarsh between Pangbourne and Theale. Visit www.bbowt.org.uk for more details.

Bowdown Woods Nature Reserve Bowdon Woods are situated on the edge of Greenham Common, near Newbury. From the car park follow the signed trails for circular walks through the woods, explore the Old Bomb Site (only wildlife there now!), and if you’re very quiet you may see deer stepping between the trees. Look out for adders and other reptiles basking in the spring sunshine on fallen trees – they may hear you before you see them and all you’ll notice is a gentle rustle in the undergrowth.
