Our house is awash with wall charts, excited boys and high expectations as the World Cup kicks off in Brazil. If your children have been inspired by the skilful footwork on display, or indeed the power of Nadal and Murray at Wimbledon, why not sign them up for one of the many sports courses to be found in our summer activities pages? And if their interests are of the more dramatic, creative or culinary kind, you’ll find lots for them too. Elsewhere our pages are packed with what’s on over the summer months, including lots of free events as we know how expensive the holidays can be. And if you want to try something new, turn to page 10 to discover where you can find wolves in West Berkshire, join the circus or even try your hand at some prehistoric golf. Whatever you get up to, have a great summer! Karen and Jane

Take the Summer Reading Challenge Children’s reading can take a dip during the long summer holidays, so why not encourage then to enter a fantastical world of legend and mythology by joining in with the 2014 Summer Reading Challenge. Run by independent charity the Reading Agency, the scheme invites children to pop into their local library and choose six or more books to read during the holidays. There are stickers and rewards to collect along the way, with a certificate at the end for every child who completes the challenge.

This year’s theme is Mythical Maze, which challenges 4-11 year-olds to discover fantastical creatures as they find their way around a labyrinth. Head to your local library from 12 July to enrol. It’s completely free and anybody can take part. Many local libraries are also organising special activities linked to the challenge, to find out more turn to page 15. The programme is supported by a Family Leaflet for parents, and a Facebook page with all the latest news: read more at www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk

Safety Snapshot A campaign led by coastguards in the Norfolk and Suffolk broads is encouraging coastal visitors to take ‘selfies’ this summer. Families and groups heading for the seaside are being asked to take a photo on their mobile phone of everyone together at the start of their day out. Peter Byatt, Station Officer with the Lowestoft and Southwold Coastguard Rescue Teams, left, explained: “It’s something most of us like to do when enjoying a day out at the coast, but taking a photograph may also help us find one of your group if they go missing. “It’s a useful tool that we can use to help in our search as we would have key information, such as what the person looked like and what they were last known to be wearing.” So next time you head for the beach, make sure you get snapping!

News & Views Is your child getting stressed about the 11-plus? Exams can make us stressed and the expectation around the 11-plus exam in particular can be quite hard on such young children. Many parents buy in additional coaching for their children but to date there has been little to help children understand and cope with the stress of it all. To address this issue, Dr Lucy Russell, the lead child psychologist at Everlief Child Psychology, has written Thinkerbud, an online course for children preparing for their 11-plus. So how does Thinkerbud work? When you have registered on the Thinkerbud website, your child is guided through a course by ‘Bud’ which takes around an hour. Thinkerbud will teach your child about stress, how it affects people and what you can do about it. It will also work with your child to build

their own action plan which they can print at the end. The course is designed to be taken by your child but of course you could take part with them which might be a good way to help them learn. Thinkerbud costs £25 and can be found at www.thinkerbud.com ‘Bud’

Teenagers online Today’s teenagers are the first generation to have grown up with the web in their lives and for them and us as parents, learning how to manage the way they present themselves online is an essential life skill. Do you know what steps you can take to help your teenagers create the online CV and presence employers and admissions tutors are increasingly looking for? Leading UK online reputation management experts Igniyte have launched A Guide to Managing Your Teenager’s Personal Information Online, which takes a closer look at all things digital and offers practical support in areas like employment, university admissions, privacy and identity. Igniyte’s free e-book aims to answer parents’ questions and more - providing easily accessible, expert advice for parents and youngsters. For a copy, go to www.igniyte.co.uk and click the ‘Download our free guides’ tab.

Eye-catching specs Children who wear glasses can now customise their existing frames to make them more personal and individual. Newly launched, Blinx are designed to be easily slipped on and off the arms of children’s spectacles, allowing them to be swapped and changed to suit their mood or outfit. They can be worn individually, as matching pairs or mixed together to create a unique look. The soft plastic charms fit the majority of children’s spectacles and are available in an initial range of 20 designs at just £1.99 each. Blinx could become a key fashion collectible very quickly. Crafty Cooks have come up with a recipe for some great little quiches that would make an ideal snack and can be filled with food of your choice. Some ideas are peppers, sweetcorn, mushrooms, ham, tomatoes and cheese. Makes 12 100g Plain Flour 50g Butter 4 fl oz Milk 2 eggs Fillings of your choice 1 Make your pastry by rubbing together the butter and flour in a large mixing bowl. Ask your children to help you ‘squidge’ the two together to see if you can magically make the butter disappear into sand. Once it is all combined add cold water a spoonful at a time until you have a nice dough. If it gets too wet then just add a bit more flour. 2 Leave the pastry aside whilst you prepare your tin. Give your child a chunk of butter and using it as a crayon colour in your tart tray holes until they are fully oiled. Sprinkle flour over the holes and turn the tray upside down to tip out the excess, which will then flour your surface.

Alternatively, foil cases can be used; these do not need to be buttered or floured. 3 Together roll out the pastry and cut out lots of circles large enough to line your tin or the foil cases.

To find the perfect party go to www.familiestvw.co.uk/parties

4 Fill the cases half way up with your fillings, then combine the egg and milk and fill to the top. Cook at 220°C / 430°F for 12-15minutes until cooked throughout.

Education

The best possible start at a new school How do you prepare your child for his or her first day at a new school? It’s all about finding the fun, says Joanna Moorhead The summer before my eldest daughter started at primary school, a rather wonderful thing happened. We were having work done on our house, and by chance a friend mentioned that a friend of hers was looking for a housesitter. It suited us perfectly to move out of our home for a few months, to escape the builders’ dust, so we did just that. And our temporary home, as it happened, was next door to the primary school at which Rosie would start in September. We moved in May, so from then until the end of July she and I would watch, each morning, as the children walked and ran and scootered past our door, in their grey and purple uniforms. They looked happy and excited; they were meeting their friends, having fun. The street would then go quiet until about 10.30am when we’d hear them again in the playground; and then again after lunch, until at 3.30pm they’d all stream out again, and head back home with their mummies and the occasional daddy. I’m sure I talked to Rosie about what it would be like in reception class, and I’m sure I taught her to open her lunchbox and get her own shoes on and off and all the other things you’re advised to do before your child’s first day at school; but the truth is that nothing prepared her for school as much as those weeks of simply living next door to it. The experience normalised what was going to be a huge change in her life: it showed her, better than any words from me could, that school was where children went when they were old enough. Watching those happy-looking kids skipping past our door, hearing them calling to their friends and generally picking up a sense that school was fun and exciting, was the best possible way of introducing her to her new life. In time my three younger daughters followed their big sister to that same school, and they – like Rosie – all took it in their stride. They, of course, were well-used to the primary by then: unlike Rosie, they would be there every morning and every afternoon, dropping off or collecting a big sister or sisters. They would pick up on the excitement and happiness of school by osmosis, seeing their sisters and their friends as they bounced up alongside their buggy – and they’d be drinking it all in. This, it seems to me, is the number one best way to get your child ready for primary school: as much as you can, show rather than tell. Try to be around the school sometimes as the children arrive or as they’re leaving for home; if you have friends with children already there, ask to go along with them sometimes for the drop-off or the pick-up. Give your child every opportunity you

can to imbibe the sense that school is an exciting and interesting place to be. Every child, and every parent, gets a bit nervous before their child starts at a new school. Even after 17 years of being a parent with children in school, I’m feeling a bit worried about my youngest daughter’s move to secondary school in September. The fact that I’ve done school starts many, many times before doesn’t alter the fact that this is a first for Catriona, and because it’s a first for Catriona it’s a first for me too. But what I now know is how important it is for me to be confident, and to be positive, about the move. Of course I have mixed feelings: of course I’m a bit worried about how she’ll cope in new surroundings, about whether she’ll find it easy to make new friends, about whether she’ll like the school food and about whether she’ll settle down to the work. And when she wants to talk about those fears – because, of course, she has them too and it’s important not to deny our children’s feelings – I do. But I always remember

Moreuson education www.familiestvw.co.uk/education Visit now at www.at familiestvw.co.uk

to talk to her as well about how exciting this new start is going to be: because every beginning is a bit scary and involves risks - but our lives move on and grow and become whole because we embrace them and we’re brave about them. Children worry when we worry, and they’re confident when we’re confident. So if you’ve got a child starting school this autumn, the number one thing to do is find the confidence in yourself: empathise with your child, but empathise with the fact that her world is opening up and becoming more exciting as well as with the fact that there will be wobbles. Try not to worry too much about the problems: believe in your own, and believe in your child’s, ability to deal with these as they come along. Don’t even, for a minute, bother about things like maths and English and reading: no, honestly, I mean it. Those things are for further down the line: all you have to think about, this September, is delivering a child to school with a song in his or her heart. Do that, and everything else will be easy.

Summer Fun!

Try something different this summer!

If you are planning a staycation this year here are a few fun ideas to make the most of the long summer holidays. Best of all, they are all fairly close to home, so you won’t be stuck on the motorway for hours.

Join the circus at Odds Farm Park Roll up, roll up! New for 2014, every day over the holidays at Odds Farm Park, you can enjoy the fun and excitement of the Charles Chipperfield Circus! Inside the Big Top marvel at the spectacular human acts from around the world including a Mexican clown, Italian fast speed juggler and even the amazing ‘Spiderman’. With four shows daily, followed by circus skills workshops, all the extra fun is included in entry. Children will love to explore, experiment, build and play in the brand new Sand and Water Play Area. And elsewhere at Odds Farm you can win a medal at sheep racing (weather permitting), board tractor and trailer rides, race Go Karts and meet furry friends in the large undercover animal barns. Combined with a jam-packed animal activity and demonstration programme and the giant indoor playbarn there’s just so much to do! 01628 520 188, www.oddsfarm.co.uk

Visit the wolves in Beenham There’s no need to head for the frozen wastes of Siberia to spot some real live wolves. Find them much closer to home in Beenham a pretty village situated between Reading and Newbury and home since 1995 to the UK Wolf Conservation Trust and its ten ambassador wolves. The Centre runs events aimed at promoting awareness and raising money for wolf conservation around the world; and this year for the first time it is holding Visit Days every Wednesday. Visitors can see the wolves and photograph them from the viewing platform, learn about the Centre’s conservation work and enjoy a guided tour. Don’t miss feeding time at 2pm, it’s a fascinating opportunity to watch the wolves fully animated and showing their pack behaviour. During the holidays there will also be special children’s activities running, so why not take along a picnic and enjoy the peaceful setting? Tickets on gate: £8, under 13s £5, under 3s free. No dogs allowed. 0118 971 3330, www.ukwolf.org

Experience Jurassic Golf Something prehistoric is stirring at The Oracle Riverside in Reading and if you’ve visited lately you may well have spotted some life-sized dinosaurs loitering with intent. In fact they form part of a Jurassic Park themed golf course complete with a diving airplane, jungle foliage, a military jeep and, of course, plenty of dinosaurs – there’s even a moving T-Rex. The 9-hole course is (unsurprisingly) the only golfing game of its kind and it’s designed for all the family to test their putting skills. So, if your family are mini-golf fans, head on down to the Riverside before the end of September when the dinosaurs will be on the move again. Adults £4.50, Under 12s £4 and Under 4s £3. www.jurassic-golf.com

Don’t forget to tell advertisers you heard about them in

Mess about on boats Ahoy me hearties! With so many rivers and waterways in our area there are plenty of opportunities for families to take to the water this summer. Why not climb aboard the narrowboat Jubilee for a pirate adventure along the Kennet & Avon Canal every Tuesday and Wednesday from 29 July till 27 August. Children are encouraged to dress up in their pirate gear and join the Jubilee’s buccaneer crew, with trips casting off from Newbury Wharf at 2pm and lasting about 75 minutes. Tickets are available in advance from Newbury Visitor Information Centre. Adults £6, seniors £5, child £4, family (of 4) £18. 01635 30267, www.visitnewbury.org.uk Or how about a wildlife watching cruise with Hobbs of Henley? Running every Tuesday afternoon from 22 July until 26 August, these 75-minute cruises depart from Henley Boatyard with an expert guide to help you spot the many natural treasures between Henley and Hambleden. Don’t forget your binoculars! Adult £8.75, seniors £7.25, child £5.25. 01491 572 035, www.hobbs-of-henley.com If you prefer taking to the water under your own steam, there are plenty of crafts available to hire from the Dinton Activity Centre, based at the Sandford Lane entrance to Dinton Pastures Country Park. Enjoy paddling around the lake in kayaks and stand up paddle boards or how about a 6-person KataKanu? The Centre also runs lots of events and children’s activities from taster sessions to week-long courses. Many are listed in our Diary Dates and Summer activities pages or find out more at www.wokingham.gov.uk/dac

Summer Fun! Spend a night under canvas Camping can be a magical and adventurous experience for all the family to enjoy. Novices may want to stay close to home for their first attempts at sleeping under the stars and one of our favourite local camp sites is Wellington Country Park. Camp within the shady woods and have free unlimited access to the Park where children can let off steam in the adventure play areas, dig in the sand pits, play mini golf, visit the animal farm and ride on the miniature railway. Better still you get out-of-hours access too and can enjoy the play areas and beautiful grounds into the evening when everyone else has gone home. It’s the perfect location for you and your family, or a group of families, to have fun together - and with all that activity you should get a good night’s sleep. Plus if things really do go pear-shaped at least it’s an easy drive home! www.wellington-country-park.co.uk

Try Cliveden’s giant slide

PAGE 12

Following rave reviews last summer, a giant stainless steel slide is returning to the National Trust gardens of Cliveden, near Maidenhead to raise awareness of the complex conservation project to save the magnificent South Terrace. Visitors climb up to a high platform to look over the conservation work as it progresses before children and brave-hearted adults descend to ground-level in just 5 seconds via the 22.5 metre long slide – far more fun than the stairs! Set within these colourful gardens, the slide is just one of many attractions this summer. Other family favourites include the storybook-themed play area, the challenging Cliveden Maze and weekly Wild Wednesday events throughout the school holidays. Watching an outdoor performance can be a bit of a lottery, will you enjoy a relaxing and balmy evening of delight - or end up huddling under blankets in rain-sodden misery? If the weather seems set fair, there are plenty of classic tales being performed this summer in some truly beautiful settings such as the grounds of historic Shaw House in Newbury and Mapledurham House just outside Reading. Take your pick from the black comedy of Roald Dahl; a musical version of Alice; Shakespearean drama; or exciting tales of daring from those old favourites Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes and Long John Silver. You’ll find details of all of these in our Diary Dates pages. Or how about a spot of murder and madness? Macbeth is being performed by the Progress Theatre Company on the riverside at Caversham Court from 18-27 July. So book your tickets, pack a rug and a picnic, then sit back and enjoy. Just don’t George’s Marvellous Medicine forget your brolly!

Summer Fun!

A 21st Century Swallows and Amazons Summer Natalie Trice comes up with a few suggestions to make the long holidays a little easier for frazzled parents.

Ride a bike; it is free, easy and great exercise when you can’t get to the gym. Building a den is a treat for girls and boys and if you add a theme like pirates and princesses the fun can last for days. Have your very own sports day in the garden complete with rosettes and whistles. Who says the egg and spoon race is only for the school field? The library is not just for borrowing books and DVDs. As well as summer reading challenges taking place, there is often a plethora of information about local activities, events and places to visit on display, so make sure

you are a member of yours. Of course all of this is well and good when the British weather is kind to us, but for rainy days I called on my friends for inspiration: • “We have a rainy day box full of bits and pieces that can be used to make cards, jewellery or story books and of course making a cake for tea is always a winner”. • “My kids love to visit the fish and pet department at the garden centre and afterwards we go for a sneaky hot chocolate and piece of cake”. • “Every summer we have an ongoing multi-author holiday

Whatever you do this summer, think back to what you did as a child and remember - there is more to the holidays than 101 likes on Facebook and an overdraft. Natalie Trice is a freelance journalist, writer and awardnominated blogger, she knows a thing or two about PR and social media too. She’s also a Mummy to two small boys, wife to Oliver and an owner of a cat and a dog. When she isn’t writing or networking on Facebook, Natalie is an avid shopper, coffee drinker and collector of handbags and shoes. www.passionate aboutwords.co.uk Photo courtesy National Trust/John Millar

If you’re looking through rosetinted glasses, the school holidays are fun-filled days of laughter, smiles and relaxing after the busy academic year. In reality, six weeks is a long time. If you have no activities planned chaos can erupt, tempers can be frayed and tears will be shed (yours and theirs). There are those (annoying) parents who sail through the break updating their social media statuses with a whirlwind of art and craft projects, face-painting fun and frolics in Italy. They return to the gates in September looking radiant and tanned whilst we mere mortals are frazzled, broke and on the brink of booking into The Priory. I can’t magic you into Mary Poppins, but I am here to help make life a little easier, with a few suggestions. They are all fun and will create life-long memories but won’t cost the earth (or even a penny). You’ve got to eat, right? So why not go for a picnic? Throw together sandwiches, snacks and bottles of water and eat alfresco in the garden, by the river or in the local park. If you have friends close by why not ask them to come along too – the more the merrier – and enjoy a game of rounders or a treasure hunt? Get wet! It is fun, free and mums can join in too. Water balloons, spray bottles, garden hoses, paddling pools and water guns are all brilliant mood boosters and if you have a friend with the real deal, pack up your swimming costumes and hang out at their house for a few hours. My sons are massive bug lovers, so one of the mums at school, who is far more imaginative than me, suggested a mini beast adventure. Pack up a picnic (you see a theme here), your fishing rods and buckets and head to the river for some bug-hunting, pond dipping, pooh stick playing and tiddler catching – what’s not to like?

story using a large roll of paper that is added to over weeks, usually when the weather is bad, and it is a brilliant way to remember all the stuff we have done and enjoyed”. • “Rather than pay for cinema tickets, we create our own movie fest at home. We choose a film, make some popcorn, create tickets and then snuggle up on the sofa with blankets – sometimes you just need a chill-out day”.

New classes for Diddi Dance in Wokingham and Lower Earley Following a successful launch at the beginning of the year, Diddi Dance Reading and Wokingham will be launching two new classes in September 2014. Due to demand, a Wednesday afternoon class in Wokingham and a Saturday morning session in Lower Earley will be added to the current programme of weekday morning classes. “We always look forward to Diddi Dance day,” says Ella’s mum. “The class is fast paced and energetic, yet it’s led in a really relaxed and encouraging way. It’s been lovely to join in alongside my daughter and share the experience – so far we’ve had a go at Hip Hop, Country, Irish and Flamenco dancing…we can’t wait to find out what’s coming next!” Diddi Dance is the market leader in dedicated pre-school dance classes. By exploring multiple dance styles, the funky sessions are the ideal way to introduce girls and boys aged 2-4 years (and their parents or grandparents) to the joy of dancing and to instil a love of physical activity from an early age.
