If you’re looking for a new hobby to inspire or fascinate your child why not take a look at our clubs and classes directory. You’re sure to find something that they haven’t tried before - be it synchronised swimming, painting, golf or martial arts. You never know where their new passion may take them! And finally, Disneyland Florida – heaven or hell? Turn to page 30 to make sure your trip to the home of Mickey (and over-sized turkey drumsticks) turns out to be the former rather than the latter. This year seems to have flown by - the next issue will be our Christmas special, see you then.

University of Reading seeks children to join the Space Quest On average one child in every UK classroom is experiencing anxiety that significantly affects their daily life, yet there is a lot we don’t know about childhood anxiety. Researchers at the School of Psychology & Clinical Language Sciences, University of Reading are interested in why some children are shy, nervous and worry a lot, whereas others are easy-going and confident. They are looking

for families with children aged 4-8 years (they don’t have to be anxious!) to help them find out and to learn how to prevent children in the future from experiencing problems with anxiety. Parents are asked to answer some online questionnaires first and then some families will be invited to take part in the Space Quest. To get involved visit www.helendodd. wordpress.com/research/

Work begins on MERL’s £1.8m transformation Work is due to begin this autumn on the transformation of The Museum of English Rural Life (MERL), funded by a £1.8m Heritage Lottery Fund grant. The family-friendly Museum will be radically re-designed and expanded as part of the ‘Our Country Lives’ project to create an exciting and innovative visitor experience. Designed to engage a new generation with rural heritage, there will be new galleries offering interactive displays. Increased space will allow ‘hidden treasures’, to be displayed for the first time and there will be more opportunities to handle objects, bringing to life the stories of the people that live and work on the land. An improved welcome area will include a larger shop and better facilities. The muchloved MERL garden will have extra children’s play facilities and new food and crop-based planting, reflecting the themes of the displays inside. Isabel Hughes, MERL curator, said: “Our Country Lives’ will connect our visitors to the countryside like never before. The exciting transformation of our galleries will address more recent 20th century history and showcase the vital links between town and country. We also

have exciting plans for new events and activities in the coming years, working closely with the local community as well as our rural followers.” MERL, which is owned and managed by the University of Reading, has always encouraged families to visit and offers a wide range of workshops, events and activities for children of all ages. The Museum will close temporarily later this year but activities will continue at various sites whilst the re-development work takes place. To find out more about this exciting project and dates and venues for upcoming events, visit www. reading.ac.uk/merl/ or call 0118 378 8660.

Waverley in the Times Top 100

Open Morning

Tuesday 23rd September 9am to 11.30am. Headmaster’s welcome at 9.15am

Waverley Preparatory School and Day Nursery in Finchampstead is placed 55th nationally in the prestigious, annual Times Top 100 Prep Schools. Waverley is an independent, non-selective school which teaches from nursery through to year six. They gained their position based on pupils’ results in National Tests (SATs), which were well above average. As the pupils all move on at year six, the focus is very much on preparing children for the 11+ entries to both local grammar schools and also selective independent secondary schools in the area, often with scholarship opportunities. Providing a rounded education, creative subjects such as sports, drama, music and the arts are valued within the school and creative talents nurtured. The school offers scholarships to both academically gifted children and those who have talent in performing arts. Head Teacher, Tammy Howard said: “We are not a selective school and the results that we achieve are a result of the hard work, dedication and enthusiasm of our pupils and staff. I am so very proud of them all. We’re looking forward to continuing with the high expectations and quality teaching and learning to continue our pupils’ success.” Find out more at www.waverleyschool.co.uk or visit on the Open Day on Saturday 11th October 2014 between 10.30am and 12.30pm.

Leighton Park students support Water4all Year 8 students at Leighton Park School recently participated in a triathlon raising money to help villagers in Africa. Water4all is a charity which supplies clean water to African communities through the provision of water pumps and large tanks. Water4all has been supported by the fundraising efforts of the Reading-based independent school where a Community, Action, Service (CAS) programme encourages students to undertake practical philanthropic activity. Money was raised through a Christmas Fair, a 100-length sponsored swim and the summer triathlon. The biennial Sixth Form trip to Uganda in October will witness the installation of the water tank, bought

with the financial support of Year 8. Two Leighton Park students completed the triathlon carrying a heavy bucket of water, emulating the walk to the bore hole necessary for villagers without a water tank, and one enthusiastic participant undertook the running section four times! Evie Morgan (Year 8) explained why she is keen to support Water4all, “We want to save people and lower the death rate of children and adults. We will raise enough money to put a water pump in a village in Africa which will save thousands of lives and will also be a permanent solution for people who currently walk miles to the nearest water hole.” www.leightonpark.com

Starting school

with help from Wendy Flynn

So your child has started school? Congratulations - you’ve reached another milestone. But what can you expect in these first few weeks? A survey of mums found that 3 out of 4 mothers questioned were ‘anxious’ about their children starting school, and nearly 9 in 10 mums said their greatest concern was children settling in and making friends. Some children will sail through the process smoothly but for others the transition from home to school can be a little choppy. And it’s not just the kids battling mixed emotions - we can suffer as parents too. We’re reluctant to accept that our little ones are going ‘out into the world’ – they still look so tiny in their new uniforms. It can be difficult to predict how you and your child will react to the first days of school but to make the experience fun and enjoyable try to remain confident and positive and keep these top tricks in mind:

Tears in the playground? This is perfectly

natural and it does NOT mean that your child is fated to hate school and not make friends. It’s just all a little daunting for them at the moment. Separation anxiety can be heartwrenching but leave your child with a quick kiss, a big smile and reassurance that you will be back later. Don’t linger, don’t sneak out and, even if you hear screaming, don’t come back! Remember, most children only cry for a few minutes after their parents leave. • Don’t panic, either, if a child who has happily skipped into school for the first few weeks

suddenly becomes clingy at the school gate and says they don’t want to go. That can be part of the pattern too as they make the adjustment to school, and it doesn’t mean they are being bullied in the playground. If your child is clingy or very upset ask staff to help. They are used to it and will help both you and your child adjust. Have a quick chat with the reception class teacher, who will be adept at working through those early days blues, and most likely you will be reassured that within minutes of arriving in the classroom your child is happy and engaged. Leave the house in good time and if possible walk to school. It’s a great time to chat and catch up and it gives your child a chance to wake up properly, ensuring they are refreshed and ready for the day. Make sure you start this good habit on Day 1, and don’t turn back! If you feel emotional try to hold back the tears until you leave the classroom – I promise you, you won’t be alone. Ask the other mums to go for a coffee after drop-off, they may be feeling just like you. Expect your child to be tired at the end of the day and don’t be surprised when you ask what they were doing at school, the reply is either “I can’t remember” or “nothing”. That’s usual too. Try asking specific questions: “Who did you sit next to at lunch?”; “Did you use the computer today?” You’ll get a much more positive response. Most schools are really good at making sure the little ones are looked after in the school playground – and that newcomers have a buddy - until they find their feet and make their own friends. But just as you breathe a sigh of relief that your child has made a

friend, you will probably find that the role of ‘best friend’ changes on a daily basis until you become thoroughly confused with the who’s who of school life. It will settle in time. • Make an effort to get to know the other mums. You don’t have to become a fullyfledged member of the playground Mafia or the Chair of the PTA, but many of those mums will be your allies over the next seven years. Avoid those with the ‘competitive’ streak (so desperate to know another child’s reading level that they invite him to tea after school just so they can look through his school book bag). Instead, find those mums with a broader perspective on life who will surely become firm friends. You will survive - and once your child is settled the whole thing will seem like a breeze. So enjoy this special time in their lives, before you know it they will be off to university!

Improve 11+ vocabulary in a flash Is your child in year 4 or 5? Are you preparing or thinking about entering them for the 11+ entrance examination? The Durham University CEM 11+ test demands strong vocabulary and comprehension skills. Farquhar’s Vocabulary Flash Cards are highly recommended by tutors and schools for CEM preparation. The flash cards will encourage your child to build up a bank of challenging vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms and compound words. Easily portable in small sets, they are perfect for vocabulary practice on the go. They can be used in many ways - as classic flash cards, stuck up as words of the week, or as a tool to make up your own games to challenge friends and family. An invaluable time-saving resource for busy parents. For more information visit www.vocabularyflashcards.co.uk – and don’t forget to mention Families magazine.

Guide to the new national curriculum This September, a new national curriculum will be taught in maintained state schools across England. However, many parents are totally unaware of the changes. To help you get to grips with what’s new in the classroom Families asked tuition provider Explore Learning to provide a quick guide. To put it simply, for most children and parents the new curriculum will appear more challenging. Many concepts in maths and English will be introduced earlier than previously, and initially this may feel like quite a jump.

Explore Learning

English: While there is a continued focus on phonics, there is also to be a larger emphasis on grammar, punctuation and spelling. There will be more concentration on Shakespeare, with children and pupils expected to have studied two of his plays between the ages of 11 and 14. Maths: In maths, knowing times tables (12 x12 by the end of Year 4), calculating with fractions, using written methods of calculation and having strong mental maths skills will be more important than ever, and there will be more opportunity to develop problem solving skills in maths – something which we are very excited about. Computing: Children will be taught to write code and pupils aged five to seven will be expected to ‘understand what algorithms are’ and to ‘create and debug simple programs’.

Learn to Read in 5 Weeks – for FREE! From 30 July to 30 September your child can join thousands of children across the UK taking part in the Reading Eggs Great Literacy Challenge – a nationwide effort to inspire children to read! This FREE event will give your child 5 WEEKS FREE* access to Reading Eggs – the online reading programme that teaches children aged 3 – 13 the literacy skills needed for lifetime reading success. Sign up for your FREE trial* today and see for yourself how your child’s reading improves by using Reading Eggs.

Science: New content on the solar system, speed and evolution is to be introduced at primary school level. In secondary schools, there will be a clearer sense of separation between physics, biology and chemistry. There will also be a focus on climate change. History: The history curriculum will take primary school pupils through British history from the Stone age to the Normans. They will also be able to study a later era, such as the Victorians. ‘Significant individuals’ whose lives will be given closer attention and compared in different eras include Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong, Rosa Parks and suffragette, Emily Davison, Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria. Secondary schools will teach British history from 1066 to 1901, followed by Britain, Europe and world events from 1901, including Winston Churchill and the Holocaust. So, why have the changes been introduced? Well, as you may have read, the UK isn’t doing its best in the world’s league tables. In new research commissioned by Explore Learning we found that nearly three quarters (72%) of parents worry that British children aren’t leading the field in standards of education – a result of them failing to make the top 20 in reading, maths and science. My advice to any parents keen to understand the new curriculum and help them with their homework is to attend any information sessions that your child’s school offers. In addition, for those not put off by a bit of reading, the programmes of study for each year are available from www.gov.uk/ government/collections/national-curriculum Once the school term begins, if you’re concerned at all with a change in progress at school, always consult your teacher first. The most important thing is to maintain a child’s confidence and positivity towards learning; it makes such a powerful difference to a child’s success in education. Explore Learning centres provide maths, English and 11+ tuition to 5-14 year olds of all abilities. Centres are open 7 days a week, with children able to attend up to twice a week on a drop-in basis. The nearest centre is located within Sainsburys at Calcot. We’re Going to Disneyland! Top Planning Tips and Survival Advice It’s the birthplace of Mickey Mouse, home to a dozen Disney Princesses and the place where dreams really do come true. Get it right, and a trip to Disneyland Florida is one you’ll never forget. Get it wrong, and it’s one you’ll want to forget. Sarah Butters visited this year and has some top tips to make your trip truly magical. l Think about when you are going to visit. The guide books will tell you to avoid the summer (very hot and very wet), avoid Christmas and Easter (too busy) and stick to February and October Half Terms. We went at Easter and the parks did become busier as the Easter weekend approached. However good planning will help you avoid the queues and enjoy the park whenever you choose to go. For warm weather and low rainfall choose March/April or October. l Before you commit to a date with Disney, measure your children. There is no cry as sad as the one at the entrance to your child’s favourite theme park ride when they find out they simply aren’t tall enough to get on board. Tip toes are not permitted and although the attendants were very smiley they were also very strict when it came to measuring up. We found 51 inches to be the perfect height for getting on almost all rides. 52 inches opens a few more doors and at 54 inches you will have the pick of the parks. It’s a lot of money to spend to find half your party watching the fun rather than having it.

l Location is everything when it comes to choosing the right accommodation. Do you stay outside the parks and drive in each day? Or do you opt to throw yourself into the Disney experience and stay in one of the on site hotels? The on site option is more costly, but it also has lots of benefits. You can ditch the car hire and use the hugely efficient park transport. It’s as if you wish for a bus/water taxi/train and they simply arrive. You’ll also get early and late access to the parks at peak times of the year. This was invaluable during the busy Easter break as it meant we could enjoy the popular rides before the crowds descended. Finally, being near to the parks means you can head in early, head back to the hotel pool to soak tired limbs before returning for evening entertainment. Being on site means you truly make the most of it, however as my husband pointed out on several occasions, “there’s no escape from that blinking Mouse.”

l Book early for the better restaurants or character themed meals. For the best choice you need to begin booking 180 days in advance. Now I know that very notion is making several of you raise your eyebrows and sigh, and I did too. But it’s true. There are certain key venues and events that will be fully booked months ahead of your visit. At busier times of the year, you’ll struggle to get a table if you haven’t made reservations.

l For Princess fans, make sure you book Be My Guest. This French themed restaurant, at the base of the Beast’s castle Meeting the Beast at his Castle l Do not dismiss the Disney Dining Plan. This is a pre-paid set in the Magic Kingdom, has super food and of dining options which, on first viewing, looks pricey. Trust me. It’s you’ll get to meet the hairy host. There’s not. Against my husband’s better judgement (“that Mouse has had also Cinderella’s Royal Table which is in the you again with this Dining Plan…”) the Dining Plan was fantastic and most banqueting hall of the Disney Castle, also definitely saved us money – about 30% we think. in the Magic Kingdom. The food isn’t as good but it’s a lovely event. We went Your credit is uploaded onto a wristband and every time you buy a meal, that at lunchtime and met just about every Disney Princess. The girls loved Ariel. My credit is reduced. There are better meal deals for Dining Plan customers and an husband liked Jasmine. These events are a great opportunity for the children to unlimited refills mug which is great for thirsty children and coffee addicts. fill their autograph books without standing in line out in the parks.

l Don’t leave home without the My Disney Experience App. This is your gateway to a hassle free trip. With this app, you link up your park tickets, your hotel reservations and your Fast Pass options. There’s free Wifi in the parks so you can use this to navigate your way round. It gives you up to the minute wait times at rides, parade times, reservation availability at restaurants and the ability to make bookings at the touch of a button. Download it before you go and browse it at your leisure. You’ll need to be an expert by the time you hit the Magic Kingdom! l Plan, plan and then plan some more. A friend of mine gave me a spreadsheet she’d created for her trip and I remember laughing….until I created one myself several weeks later. You will get the most out of your trip if you put some effort in to researching park hours, character restaurants and firework displays before you get on the plane. Disney’s Magic Hours are available online months in advance so you can see which park is best to hit on which day. Early planning means you can also book your Fast Passes. If you’re visiting the parks over a busy period, don’t entertain the trip without the Fast Pass option. This entitles you to pre book 3 rides at any one park on any one day. The recently upgraded Fast Pass + system means you can register before you get to the U.S and make your reservations through the truly amazing My Disney Experience App I’ve already talked about. l The early bird beats the queues. So embrace the inevitable jet lag and 55346 Pharmaton UK AD 87mm x 130mm AW.indd head out as the dawn chorus begins. If you’re in a resort hotel, enjoy the early Magic Hours which can start at 7am during high season. I remember standing in stony silence at 6.15am on a chilly Florida morning, waiting for a water taxi to take us to a theme park. The most worrying part of it was, it felt normal.

WARNING…. Don’t be alarmed by the huge numbers of people you’ll see gnawing on a large turkey leg. You’ve not stumbled on a medieval feast, these are a world famous ‘delicacy’. Not one that we indulged in but we did watch on in awe as others did! And finally Throw yourself into the Disney experience. If you spend your time moaning about the fried food, the queues, the lack of ‘a good glass of wine’ and the opportunities to spend money on Mickey related ‘memorabilia’ you will spoil it for yourself. Go knowing it’s not real and enjoy the laughs you’ll share as a family and the memories you’ll make together. The real world can be pretty rubbish sometimes so go and enjoy escaping from it for a while!
