Editor’s Letter

Welcome to Families... A recent survey revealed that many 21st Century mums feel lonely and isolated, and more than 50% would like more or better friends. I know this feeling well. When I was a brand new mum, it was a confusing time. As well as the huge excitement that comes with being a new parent, I often felt lonely and stuck for things to do on a wet Wednesday afternoon with this new little person who had come into my life. It’s also a testing time for one’s confidence too - being in a completely new situation with absolutely no formal training! During this time, Families became a lifeline for me - a magazine and website written just for me, packed with advice, ideas of things to do and information about clubs and classes, groups to join, places to go, and things to see. Thanks to Families, Millie and I joined new groups and both made new friends (her social life quickly became better than mine!), we learned baby sign language, went to swimming and soft play and discovered all the amazing things for parents and kids to do together, right on my doorstep. Which is why I’m delighted, five years after the birth of my first child, to be taking over the helm of Families Thames Valley West and continue to bring you the very best news, information, advice and ideas as well as a comprehensive list of what’s on in our fantastic Thames Valley. Summer is well on the way and it’s time to get out and enjoy some family time together. Our What’s On pages are packed with fun days out, from treasure hunts to tree climbing, village fetes and air-shows I’m sure you’ll find plenty to pack into your free time. This is also our Party Issue and we’ve included the pick of the online party directory, plus lots of ideas to entertain your children and their friends. Please feel free to drop me a line with any feedback or ideas, or just to say hello! Best wishes Lucy

Henri le Worm comes to Brasserie Blanc If, like me, the very thought of taking your two lovable yet boisterous youngsters to an upmarket restaurant fills you with dread, then the team at Brasserie Blanc are keen to set your mind at rest with a brand new kids menu and a warm welcome in their restaurants. The new Henri le Worm menu, now available at all twenty Brasserie Blanc restaurants, is based on the popular children’s app of the same name and has been developed to mirror Raymond Blanc’s passion for healthy and seasonal produce, and to keep little gourmets well fed and entertained. I needn’t have worried about taking the children my girls were warmly welcomed into the bustling restaurant and were entertained by the Henri le Worm activity sheets whilst their food was prepared. Both went for Mac N Cheese with a side of steamed seasonal vegetables and tomato and cucumber salad. My pleas to five year old Millie to be adventurous and try the Mini Moules went unheeded but I ordered them anyway and can confirm they are a yummy (if slightly ambitious) addition to the menu. Main courses were freshly prepared, beautifully presented and the portion sizes just right for little tummies. Chocolate mousse and vanilla ice-cream finished off a fantastic lunch which both girls pronounced ‘delicious!’ www.brasserieblanc.com

News & Views Important Changes to the 11+ exam – are you getting the most up to date tuition? Since last year the Berkshire grammar schools have started using an 11+test which is provided by the Centre for Evaluation and Monitor (CEM). Both the content and the way in which CEM tests are administered is markedly different to the ‘old’ 11+. Mock tests are a good way of assessing your child’s performance and providing vital exam practice. Together with suitable teaching preparation, mock exams should help your child feel relaxed, confident and ready to do their very best on the day. Susan Daughtrey Education holds four CEM-style 11+ Mock Exam sessions in May, June, July and August in Winnersh and Slough that have been specifically developed for CEM 11+ candidates and include ALL of the features of the real CEM 11+ tests. The new CEM tests include Verbal Reasoning, Numeracy and Non-Verbal Reasoning questions. CEM’s interpretation of Verbal Reasoning includes comprehension and vocabulary and the Numeracy (maths) element includes problem solving questions. Sections of the test are timed and typically last 6-20 minutes. There are two test papers on the same day, separated by a short break. Parents should ensure that the teaching and practice materials they buy for their child and any tuition or mock exams their child attends are suitable preparation for the CEM 11+. For more information and to book online, visit: www.sde11plus.com/mock-exams/cem

NEW BilinguaSing Spanish Classes launch in Sandhurst Award winning, Berkshire based Spanish and French bilingual singing, music and movement class ‘Bilinguasing’ is now running Spanish classes in Sandhurst. The classes are run by Kate Sleeman, who is passionate about teaching children languages from an early age. She says, ‘The best time for babies and young children to learn a second, or third, language is when they are learning their first. Parents don’t need to have any foreign language knowledge to come along – you can learn with your little one!’ Popular nursery rhymes are sung during the classes in Spanish and French and the new Sandhurst classes will run on Thursday mornings at Owlsmoor Community Centre with sessions suitable for babies from one month old, toddlers and pre-school children. Classes also run in Wokingham, Reading, Arborfield and Twyford. For more information visit: www.bilinguasing.com/ wokingham-reading-twyford/

New Garden for ‘Learning and Play’ haven in Wokingham Children at the Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ Oak Tree Day Nursery in Wokingham are looking forward to a long hot summer of bug hunting and imaginary play in their brand new garden. From a new cycle track complete with roundabout for road safety lessons, to a tree house and nature area, fun remains a priority in Nine Mile Ride, Finchampstead for children aged six weeks to nearly five years. Babies will enjoy the soft faux grassed area which provides safe and clean crawling and play. Oak Tree manager Lorraine Beamish explained the importance of getting outside: “Children of all ages benefit from exploring and investigating the great outdoors. It’s a process that not only builds self-esteem but helps our practitioners identify a child’s particular interests and talents. We introduce as many different opportunities as possible for our children to capture their imagination and see where their learning journey takes us.”

How to Take Great Pictures of your Children

Wendy Aldiss

Kids grow up fast, so it’s important to capture all those special moments, and with cameras on most smartphones, it’s never been easier. Here, renowned local photographer Wendy Aldiss shares her top tips and tricks for taking great shots that will make lasting memories: 1. Get Down to Their Level

One of the biggest mistakes parents make is to take shots from above. This gives a ‘birds eye view’ which can often feel distant and rather impersonal. Bend down low, to your child’s level, and you get a whole new perspective on their world. With babies, try lying on the floor next to them to get beautiful, intimate shots.

lighting conditions when you’re out and about. Where possible, try to find soft, diffused light and avoid harsh contrasts between light and shade. Generally cloudy conditions and shadows work better than direct sunlight. If you’re at home, try to find diffused directional light from windows and open doors which work really well for portraits.

2. Don’t Try to Pose

Getting a child to stand still can be very difficult, which is why all those dreadful posed studio shots from our childhood look so stiff and formal! Let your children be themselves and you’re much more likely to capture genuine expressions and emotions. My favourite photos are ones where children are doing their favourite activity and forget you’re there.

8. Use Props

4. Timing is Everything

3. Find Good Lighting

toy, film or song. After a couple of minutes, they become engrossed in their subjectand you can capture genuine expressions and emotions. If you can get them singing or dancing, even better!

The secret to great photography is great lighting, but it’s impossible to recreate studio

Try and take a great picture when you’ve got a grumpy, tired or hungry child on your hand and you’re guaranteed a headache! Pick your moments and work to their schedule. Younger children often photograph well straight after a nap and a snack.

9. Capture Motion

5. Don’t be Afraid to Get Close

Many people think they have to get the whole subject in the picture from head to toe, but my advice is to fill the frame with your subject. Don’t be afraid to clip off part of the head or legs – what you’re looking for is capturing the expression in that moment.

6. Use Your Flash in Daylight The only fully equipped mobile nail salon in the region. Let the salon come to you! Workplace/Events/Parties/At Home Using long lasting Gel II products to give you an elegant and striking look with no nail damage 07979 650 577 / 07748 982 469 www.rebelicious.co.uk

This is a good trick which will help brighten any shadows underneath the child’s eyes and nose and will give you a well-lit image. Set your phone’s flash to ‘on’ rather than ‘auto’.

7. Get them Talking, Singing and Dancing!

One of my best tricks for getting kids to feel comfortable when being photographed is to ask them to talk about their favourite

Moreusideas Visit now at at www.familiestvw.co.uk www. familiestvw.co.uk

Most children adore dressing up and acting out fairytale, princess, pirate or superhero fantasies. They can have great fun trying on silly hats, feather scarves, sunglasses. Having an array of props to hand is sure to capture shrieks of laughter and beaming smiles! Children are all about constant movement and activity. Don’t ask your children to stop what they’re doing, instead, concentrate on photographing the moment. Set your camera to a fast shutter speed and even better, if you have a continuous shooting option on your camera – use it (this normally looks like an icon of a running man). Using these settings will freeze the action.

10. Snap Snap Snap!

Don’t be afraid to fill your memory card. The best thing about digital photography is the opportunity to experiment with different light, settings and techniques. If you get it wrong, you can just delete! And you can never take too many pictures of your kids!

Happy Snapping!! www.wendyaldiss.co.uk Thames Valley West

Education

Which Secondary school is right for my child? Joanna Moorhead on the 20 things you need to know when choosing ‘big school’ 1. Make your own mind up. It’s amazing how many parents never even look round a school because of what they’ve heard. A school that doesn’t suit another family could be just right for yours 2. Listen to your child’s feelings as well as your own. Choosing his or her primary was down to just you and your partner; but your 10 or 11-yearold deserves a say. 3. Use open days wisely. If you can, go to a daytime visit (especially to a school that seems a strong contender) because you’ll see it in working mode. 4. Nothing advertises a school like its pupils. Do they seem happy? Are they polite? If you have time, hang around in the area at home time. Are they well-behaved? 5. How about the staff – do they seem happy and fulfilled working there? Take opportunities to chat to them. 6. Listen to your instincts. If a school doesn’t feel right, move on. You don’t have to explain yourself or your reasons for doing so to anyone else (although you do, of course, need to discuss it with your child if your instincts are different). 7. Don’t get bogged down in the detail: what you’re aiming to get is a sense of the school. Does it feel happy, productive, calm? Is there a sense of order and caring? These things matter more than the nitty-gritty. 8. Think about your child’s talents and interests and ponder carefully whether they’ll be catered for. But think too about what the school offers that might be harder to pick up at home. We’re a family of journalists, where literacy is easier for us as parents; so I’m glad my girls

went to a school that specialised in maths and science, even though these weren’t their strongest subjects. Pay attention to what’s on the walls – and not just the artwork. What are children being warned about, or encouraged to do? Are there any school visits being advertised? What clubs seem to be thriving? Look at the school’s league tables, but don’t pin everything on them. Read the Ofsted report too and pay particular attention to how the school has done over time. If it’s had a dip, are there signs of improvement or suggestions that it could turn round? Where do pupils go on to from this school? You want to see at least some youngsters doing well academically and aiming for good courses at top universities. Go to the head teacher’s talk and take your notebook. This is an important part of the event: not only do you need to pick up on the head’s attitude and values and what matters most to him or her, but you also need to pay special attention to anything that’s said about the entrance criteria. Understanding that is the crucial next stage. If you like a school, do your homework about whether your child fits its entrance requirements. However much you love the school, and however much you think your child would thrive there, you’ll only get a place if you fulfil the criteria. Read the school’s entrance policy through very, very carefully. If you don’t fulfil the requirements, could you change something so you do? If not, move on: there’s no point in wasting a choice or railing against something you can’t change. You’re bound to talk to other parents, and you want to talk to other parents, but don’t get pulled along by their tide. Do your own research and develop your own views: knowledge is power. Keep telling yourself (because it’s true!) that there is no perfect school. Every school has strengths and weaknesses. There’s more than one school that can be right for your child. When the time comes to fill in the forms, allow yourself lots of time and do it extremely carefully. There may be supplementary forms, and there may be complicated arrangements for giving them in (especially if you’re applying to faith schools). If you find it all too confusing, talk to your child’s primary teacher or primary head, or call the education department at your local authority. Have a plan of action for what you’ll do if you don’t get the school you’re hoping for. Just having that plan will make you feel more relaxed. Remember that there’s a lot of movement in the first few weeks after places are allocated, and many children get in from waiting lists. Don’t underestimate how much hard work an appeal can be, or how emotionally draining. That’s not to say don’t do it: just be prepared. Remember that, at the end of the day, parents make more difference to a child’s future than a school does. Even if your child doesn’t get into your first choice of school (and one in seven didn’t last year) your attitude to that could be a much bigger factor in what happens next for your child than the school itself. Have confidence, first and foremost, in your child. And believe that, together, you will work things out if and when you come up against problems. MAY/JUNE 2015

Walk to school Yes, it’s that time of year again. This year’s Walk To School Week takes place 18-22 May, bringing together nearly one million schoolchildren, teachers and parents, and this year’s event promises to be the biggest and best yet! Walk To School Week is part of National Walking Month, which takes place throughout May. It also includes Walk to Work Week, so us parents don’t get out of it either! This year, Walk To School Week is all about the health benefits of walking. During the week, Walk to School mascot Strider encourages pupils to take his 5-Day Walking Challenge – supported by their fantastic classroom-focused pack. Day 1 focuses on a healthy body, as daily exercise has numerous physical health benefits including helping to reduce the risk of childhood obesity and medial conditions such as cancer and heart disease. Day 2 is health and happiness, as regular walking helps to keep young minds healthy and alert ready for their arrival at school. Day 3 concentrates on healthy habits. An energetic walk at the start of the day encourages healthy eating habits such as having a nutritious breakfast every morning. Day 4 is healthy friends and family, as the walk to school is the perfect opportunity for some quality family time or a good chat with friends. And finally Day 5 is a healthy environment – walking means less pollution and cleaner air – a benefit for everyone! And it’s not just the health benefits. Walking to school can also save you money – as much as £400 a year! There are plenty of fun ways to get involved.

Why not set up a Park & Stride area around your school, or hold a Walk to School event and encourage your friends to leave their cars at home for a day? You could team up with neighbouring schools and organise a walking relay between schools, with refreshment stops at each one. Or nominate your dream walking companion from the world of books and dress up as them on Walk to School Day. A treasure hunt is a fun way to add a bit of competition on the walk to school, too. Download loads of puzzles, pledges and challenges from their website, and discover more ways of celebrating Walk To School Week. For us grown ups, Walk to Work Week runs 11-15 May 2015, so if you fancy a bit of healthy competition in your workplace check out the website and discover where walking can take you. Their free workplace walking challenge is a fun way to get some competition going between you and your colleagues. Use their free tools to log your walks and see how many calories you burn, as well as their live workplace and team totals and leaderboards to spur you on. www.walktoworkweek.org.uk

Mindfulness has become the buzzword in the world of health and wellbeing, and an emerging body of research has shown that it can also have many positive benefits for children. So what’s it all about and how can we help our children become more mindful? Sarah Salmon, founder of Brilliant Beings, explains: There’s no doubt about it, our children’s lifestyles these days are hectic and non-stop. As spiritual guru Eckhart Tolle puts it, ‘In today’s rush we all think too much, seek too much, want too much, and forget about the joy of just being.’ As parents it’s tempting to cram as many experiences into our children’s lives as possible, but what about the benefits of helping our children to just ‘switch off’ from the world for a while? Study after study shows that mindfulness can reduce the stress hormone cortisol (linked with everything from heart disease to cancer), alleviates headaches and anxiety, boosts the immune system, improves mental health, creativity and problem solving. In fact, with regular practice of mindfulness it is perfectly possible to rewire the brain to a more peaceful disposition – a process known as neuroplasticity. As a mum to two brilliant girls, I endeavour to introduce my daughters to the mindful practices that serve me so well through life’s challenges. Mindfulness helps me to keep my mind, body and spirit in a healthy state of balance and results in my enjoying life with a deep sense of contentment. I believe that teaching these techniques to children is one of the greatest gifts we can give them as parents. Mindfulness can help our children to learn ways to help themselves become more resilient in the face of life’s myriad challenges and to experience mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. Mindfulness is all about focusing our attention on our breath and what we are experiencing through our senses in the present moment. From here, we are able to watch any thoughts or feelings that are interrupting us rather than allow ourselves to get upset or distracted by them. We can then spend less time worrying and getting stressed about things we can do nothing about in that moment, and feel calmer and happier. Children can use movement based on yoga, alongside games, music, art, storytelling and

Brilliant Beings

breathing exercises to help them to get used to the calming benefits of focusing their attention. Parents report huge benefits including healthier sleep patterns, improved focus and concentration as well as helping behaviour issues through a calmer, quieter mind and more positive attitude. A typical group session might include practicing tuning into our breath and sharing how our minds and bodies are feeling, followed by sensory and memory games focusing on smells, sounds and touch. Emotionally, I believe the practice of mindfulness is crucial in helping children build confidence and self-esteem as well as increased self-awareness and empathic understanding, enhancing their relationships with siblings, friends and parents. The Power of Touch The many benefits of Baby Massage Massage can help your baby sleep more soundly, improve wellbeing and health and help you to form a close bond. Many studies have shown that regular massage can help reduce common ailments like colic and constipation and may even help boost your baby’s immune system. Baby massage is a gently, rhythmic stroking of your baby’s body with your hands. You can use natural oils or baby moisturiser to help your hands glide smoothly over your baby’s body. As part of the massage routine, you can gently manipulate your baby’s ankles, wrists and fingers. You can talk softly, hum or sing to your baby whilst you’re massaging them. The soothing strokes of your hands stimulate the production of Oxytocin – the ‘feel-good’ hormone, in both you and your baby, promoting feelings of contentment and wellbeing. Giving your baby a massage can also help to lift your mood and feel more empowered as a parent. The time you set aside for massage can be your special time together. This can also be great for Dads who often miss out on ‘hands on’ time especially if they are at work or if baby is breastfed. The best time to massage your baby is in between feeds when they’re neither hungry nor too full. Try to pick a time when your baby is awake but settled. If they are calm and alert, they’re ready to interact with you. You may like to make massage past of your baby’s bedtime routine to help wind down and get ready for sleep. Berkshire based Baby Sensations run friendly, informal sessions that teach key techniques that can help. Founder Sarah Lailey explains, ‘Baby massage is a wonderful way to develop and enhance your relationship with your baby, and have fun together. When you massage your baby you follow in the footsteps of parents and children the world over who have benefitted from gentle therapeutic massage.” Classes are kept small to provide parents with the best opportunity to relax and focus on learning a new skill. Apart from you and your baby there is no other complicated or expensive equipment required. Once you have mastered the strokes, massage can easily be incorporated into your baby’s daily routine. All you need is you, your baby, a warm room, a little natural oil and a few minutes of your time. www.babysensations.co.uk

Party problems, solved

Planning a party? Need some advice? Sarah Butters takes a look at the very latest party problems posed by parents and gives you some top tips on avoiding serving a can of worms at your child’s next celebration. CAN YOU….say no to siblings? Most of us wouldn’t dream of turning up to a party uninvited. Yet some parents feel it acceptable to bring along a string of siblings and presume they too are welcome. “They won’t eat. In fact you won’t even know they’re here,” cry the parents as they sprint out of the door, while said siblings begin pilfering from the pre prepared party bags. The point is if you’ve budgeted for 20 and catered for 20, you’re ready for 20 children – not 25. Very often entertainers insist on a maximum number and siblings can tip you over the limit, and in turn, tip you over the edge. Prevent the problem at the point of invite and make the sibling rule clear. A simple ‘Sorry, no room for siblings!’ means there’s no question. I find the addition of an exclamation mark makes you look fun and not mean.

CAN YOU…..exclude individual children? This is a tough one because as a general rule, you should stick to one of 3 party invite rules. 1. Invite the whole class – this is perfect for Reception age children 2. Invite all the girls or all the boys – this becomes popular as children head into KS2 and the opposite sex become toxic 3. Invite a few close friends – this works when you’re keeping the budget down or as you head towards the end of primary school.

PAGE 16

Thames Valley West

However there are exceptions. If you’re child is the victim of a classroom bully, you’ve grounds to exclude that individual. This is YOUR child’s special day and they’re entitled to enjoy it without fear. Excluding problematic children is more difficult. Instead, it’s best to ask the parents of said child to stick around to offer a helping hand.

CAN YOU…..fine a parent for a ‘no show’? There is little more irritating than the parent who confirms their child will be joining the party, only for them to leave an empty chair at the birthday table. The tale of the mum who billed a parent after they failed to show up to her son’s skiing party certainly made party no shows THE talk of the playground. Was she right to have sent the invoice? The reality is there will always be ill mannered individuals who chose to accept an invite, and go on to make other plans without letting you know. In a world of text messages and emails, a no warning no show is simply unacceptable. But it’s also inevitable at some point in your party throwing life. Invoicing a parent may make the headlines and also make you feel better for a while, but it’s likely to alienate your child and make YOU the subject of ridicule at the school gates. Our advice is to make a point of asking what happened to those no show when you next bump into the parent. In my experience you maximize the middle class embarrassment the more parents there are to witness it.

Spring Walks

Beautiful One of the things I love best about living in the Thames Valley is the spectacular display of bluebells that appears every May behind my house in West Berkshire.

The bluebell has been voted Britain’s favourite flower, and it’s easy to see why when you visit woodland carpeted with these lovely flowers. Their distinctive sweet scent and intense blue colour is truly magical. Around half the world’s bluebell woods can be found here in the UK and their appearance from late April to early May attracts nature lovers from around the world. We are lucky to have some of the best sites close to home, so why not take the opportunity to get some fresh air and enjoy a family walk in the countryside? Before you go why not print out some activity sheets for the children from the Nature Detectives website: www.naturedetectives.org.uk There are lots of spotter pages to help you identify trees, flowers and animals, ideas for outdoor play and much more.

Here are few of the best bluebell walks in our area: Warburg Nature Reserve

www.harrisonclinic.co.uk

This magical reserve nestles in the Chilterns near Bix, between Nettlebed and Henley. Pop into the Visitor Centre to pick up the Wildlife Detectives Trail Pack and head off into the reserve for a wonderful time discovering birds, butterflies and spring flowers such as primroses as well as carpets of bluebells. An organised Spring Bluebell Walk is being held around the Nature Reserve on 2 May from 10am until 12pm, suitable for adults and older children. Booking is required and a £3 donation is suggested. www.bbowt.org.uk

Moor Copse has an unusual variety of habitats alongside the River Pang where you might be lucky enough to hear a water vole plop into the river. Take the woodland walk to enjoy the bluebells and then stroll through the hay meadow where in June and July you can see a colourful mosaic of wild flowers. Find Moor Copse on the A340 at Tidmarsh between Pangbourne and Theale. Visit www.bbowt.org.uk for more details.

Bowdown Woods Nature Reserve Voted one of the 10 Best Bluebell Walks in the UK by The Independent, Bowdown Woods are situated on the edge of Greenham Common, near Newbury. From the car park follow the signed trails for circular walks through the woods, explore the Old Bomb Site (only wildlife there now!), and if you’re very quiet you may see deer stepping between the trees. Look out for adders and other reptiles basking in the spring sunshine on fallen trees – they may hear you before you see them and all you’ll notice is a gentle rustle in the undergrowth. Find out more and read about a day out at Bowdown Nature Reserve at www.familiestvw.co.uk/bowdown

Spring Walks

Bluebells Tinkers, Jocks and Temple Copse These beautiful hazel coppice woodlands are bursting with bluebells. A circular walk can be enjoyed through them with surfaced paths. The best place for car parking is Jocks Lane Recreation Ground, off Binfield Road in Bracknell. So why not make a day of it with a picnic and a play in the Recreation Ground after your walk? www.bracknell-forest.gov.uk/thethreecopses

Whitegrove Copse, Sage Walk This ancient woodland can be found to the north of Bracknell, off Harvest Ride in Warfield. Its surfaced paths are great for pushchairs. There’s no formal car park so use Larks Hill car park, off Harvest Ride and walk 10 minutes along Harvest Ride to access the site. Details at www.bracknellforest.gov.uk/whitegrovecopse

Popes Meadow Popes Meadow has both open parkland, good access by car and bus and a small wooded copse full of bluebells. It’s a Green Flag Award winning site and has a disabled access route (not through the bluebells though), picnic areas, orienteering and a small play park. Find it in Binfield, off St Marks Road, RG42 4AY www.bracknell-forest.gov.uk/popesmeadow

Cliveden Near Maidenhead Throughout these National Trust woodlands you’ll find a liberal sprinkling of delicate bluebells but for the most intense sea of hazy blue head to the family play trail and fitness trail area. Look out for cowslips, snowy wood anemones and dog violets too. There are three woodland walks to download from www.nationaltrust.org.uk/cliveden

Basildon Park Basildon Park, situated between Pangbourne and Streatley, has 400 acres of countryside bordering the house and gardens. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/basildonpark

Rushall Organic Farm Located between Bradfield and Stanford Dingley, bluebell walks are held annually in conjunction with the Reading MS Society. A small entry donation gives access to various walks along permitted paths through woodlands carpeted with bluebells and other spring flowers. Walks are a variety of lengths from short, wheelchair-friendly circuits up to 5 miles. Refreshments served in The Black Barn. Dogs on leads welcome. Keep an eye on the website for dates: www.rushallfarm.org.uk

Ashridge Estate If you want to travel further afield one of the most famous and popular displays of bluebells can be seen on the Ashridge Estate, situated 3 miles north of the A41 between Tring and Berkhamstead. You’ll find 2000 acres of atmospheric mature woodland with lots of trails to explore and wonderful displays from late April, especially in Dockey Wood. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ashridge-estate
