Editor’s Letter
The school holidays are fast approaching and I’ve always looked forward to the long summer break with a mixture of excitement and, if I’m honest, just a tiny bit of dread! The prospect of providing daily entertainment for two energetic kids for six long weeks, whilst still trying to achieve some work myself is rather daunting. My girls are never happier than when they’re playing outside on their bikes or scooters, so I am keeping my fingers crossed for good weather, whilst having some ideas up my sleeve for rainy day activities. I often find that the children enjoy the simplest activities best; a bucket of water in the garden, a picnic in the field, feeding the ducks at the river or strawberry picking at the local farm. If you’re going abroad, perhaps for the first time this summer, don’t miss Carrie Bradley’s essential survival guide to flying with a baby on page 14. This issue of Families is your essential handbook for the summer holidays. We’ve compiled the very best in summer activities, day camps, sports activities, drama and dance workshops and days out. We’ve included lots of free events and discount offers as we know how expensive the holidays can be. And if you need last minute ideas or inspiration, don’t forget to check out our What’s On guide online for details of daily activities and events throughout the summer break at www.familiestvw.co.uk/whatson However you decide to spend the holidays, I wish you a relaxing and fun break with your family. See you in September! Lucy

Use Praise for Positive Parenting! We all know how confusing parenting advice can be – after all it keeps changing. It wasn’t that long ago that we were encouraged to ‘break our children’s will’ in order to ensure that they were well behaved and would fit into society. Less than 100 years ago parents were advised not to hug or kiss their children – strict discipline and minimal physical contact, unless for punishment, was the advice of the time. We now know differently and understand that effective parenting is about warmth, building self-esteem and encouraging our children through praise. So how do you deliver praise that is effective without overdoing it? Professor Matt Sanders, founder of the Triple P Positive Parenting Program, says: “We all enjoy being praised, and that’s why appropriate praise is one of the simplest ways to encourage good behaviour and help children learn new skills. If you’re too busy to notice your kids, except if it’s to say “don’t” or “no”, children quickly learn that behaviour which upsets you is also the behaviour that gets them most attention. In this way, parental attention, even if it’s negative, becomes a child’s reward. The good news is you can create a new reward for your children by making a point of noticing and praising them when they behave in a way you want to encourage. Then if you do need to say “no” or “don’t” to problematic behaviour, remind yourself to follow up with a positive instruction. For example, if you have to say, “No! Stop grabbing the cat’s tail!” follow up with, “Pat the cat like this.” A good rule of thumb is to try to deliver four positive comments to every negative. This requires an active effort on your part to create positive situations and learning interactions with your children, and to notice when they are behaving well. It’s worth it though, because this starts to create a cycle of good behaviour and praise.” For more top tips from Professor Sanders, visit: www.triplep-parenting.uk.net/online

Free quality Montessori Education Montessori is the largest and most innovative education movement in the world, with over 23,000 schools across the globe. From September, Meadowbrook Montessori School in Warfield will be offering free Government funded sessions (1pm-4pm) to eligible 3 and 4 year olds so that they too can benefit from this forward thinking approach. For over twenty-five years, Meadowbrook has been at the forefront of child-centred education. Bigger, Bolder, Hattier! Wear a Hat Day takes place in classrooms nationwide Hundreds of schools in the UK took part in Wear A Hat Day on 27th March in aid of Brain Tumour Research. Brain Tumour Research aims to support long-term life savings research to move closer to a cure. Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research is allocated to this devastating disease. Avoid the summer learning slide and save £50 with Explore Learning maths and English tuition in July The school holidays are almost here, and learning will be the last thing on most children’s minds. However, research has revealed that two-thirds of children will fall behind in their studies over the holidays meaning that when they finally go back to school in September, they may be lacking in confidence and unable to recall things they learnt in the previous school year. Carey Ann Dodah, Head of Curriculum at Explore Learning, says: “It’s surprising how much children’s academic ability slips over the summer holidays and it seems such a waste of all the time and effort they have put in over the previous year. Of course, we’re not saying it should all be work, work, work, but just a couple of hours a week to keep you topped up can make the world of difference when September comes around.” July is the most popular time of the year for families to join Explore Learning, as parents across the country look for an engaging way to keep their children’s brains active over the long summer break. Families joining in July can save £50 registration fee at participating centres, so now is a great time to join if you haven’t already. Explore Learning has maths and English tuition centres across the UK – you can try for free to see how your family can benefit. Will I or Won’t I? Why it’s never too soon to plan for your children’s future by making a will. Making a will is the single most important thing a parent can do to plan for their children in the event of their death, and yet a recent survey by consumer experts Which? has revealed that three-quarters of parents of children under ten have not yet made any provision should the worst happen. Lottie Goldstone, solicitor at Harrison Clark Rickerby’s and mum to William, explains why writing a will could be one of the best gifts you can give to your child: Let’s face it, it’s a topic no-one really wants to spend too much time thinking about. Thinking about making a will, and about our own mortality, makes most of us feel pretty uncomfortable. But we all know that we want our assets to go to our loved ones, so its worth remembering that as well as making life harder for them, putting the decision off could mean whatever we leave after our death could be divided by a set of rules which might not reflect what we want. Of the 75% of parents of children under ten who said they had not made a will, Which? found that 22% hadn’t even thought about it, 20% thought they didn’t have anything worth leaving and 12% assumed that all their wealth would automatically go to their children, but this assumption is far from correct. Many people simply don’t know that when someone dies without making a will (intestate), their estate will be divided up according to rules that take no account of personal wishes and could also lead to hefty inheritance tax bills. For example, where someone dies leaving a spouse or civil partner and children or grandchildren, the estate is divided so their spouse or civil partner receives up to a £250,000 legacy, all personal
items and half the remaining estate. The children receive the other half of the remaining estate when they are 18 years old. It’s therefore vital for families wanting to protect their assets for the future whether they are substantial or modest, to take good legal advice. Alex Neill at Which? says: “Many parents don’t want to think the worst, but when it comes to children it’s really never too early to make a will, even for expectant or new parents. A will isn’t just about who you leave your money to, it also allows you to make arrangements for who will look after your children should the worst happen.” Making a will can help you in several important ways, allowing you to: • Make proper financial arrangements for children if they are under 18 at the date of death, as well as appointing a guardian to look after them. • Put your affairs in order and leave clear instructions to provide for a spouse or civil partner and family, and avoid any disputes. • Make special provision for children who may have health, matrimonial or financial problems and ensure that assets are distributed to loved ones according to your wishes.

Untitled-2 1
• Choose your executors and set out funeral arrangements. • Reduce or eliminate inheritance tax. If you’ve already made a will, it’s worth revisiting it as your life circumstances change over the years. Your wishes five years ago could be very different to the present day, so leaving your will in a drawer for the rest of your life is not the solution! Review and update it as your life changes: marriage, children, divorce and remarriage are all changes that should be reflected in your will. You may want to change your executors, (those who carry out your wishes as expressed in your will), or you may want to name the people who would look after your children after your death. Remember – if you’re not specific about who you choose as guardians, a court will make that decision. Importantly, making a will doesn’t have to be a complex or expensive process. Good legal advice can help you make it a straightforward process. So my advice is put it on your to do list and plan early to make sure your loved ones are protected! For more information on making a will, visit: www.hcrlaw.com or www.wills.which.co.uk

Nature’s classroom As parents we know that children are happy in the outdoors, and once even the most hardened of city-dwellers have got used to the damp and mud, they revel in unstructured time spent in the natural world. This applies not only to small children, but older ones too – contact with nature is known to impact positively on teenage anxiety and depression. Outdoor play can develop children’s understanding of risk, as well as testing their emotional and physical strength. Learning how high they can climb or how brave they can be, teaches them about themselves as well as how they relate to the environment. Contact with nature has even been shown to increase creativity and language development. Children’s activity levels automatically go up when they are outdoors. As childhood obesity has a direct link with inactivity, outdoor learning could be a key to tackling this growing problem. Despite this, many of today’s children are missing out. According to Stephanie Hilborne OBE, Chief Executive of The Wildlife Trusts: “Children in 2015 are spending half as much time outdoors as they were a generation ago and it can not be unrelated that one in ten children suffer from depression. Society is starting to realise the risks that this separation from our natural environment poses to our children’s health and happiness.” So what can you do as a parent to increase your kids’ contact with nature? Here we explore some of the options:
Forest schools Inspired by Danish ‘open air life’ nurseries, the first UK Forest School was started in Somerset in 1993, at Bridgewater College. Since then the movement has spread across the UK, with many Local Authorities employing trained Forest Schools practitioners to deliver a woodland learning experience each week, usually to primary-aged children and nurseries. Little Tots Nursery (www. littletotsnurseries.com) in Reading and Burghfield is a Forest School Nursery offering regular trips to their Forest School site and allotment. To find other Forest Schools near you visit www.fis. westberks.gov.uk Leading charity, The Forest School Association, lists the principles governing the sessions. Small groups of children are taken into woodland or other natural environment, “to support the development of a relationship between the learner and the natural world.” Children are encouraged to explore their environments, taking supported risks, and the learning is child-centred rather than teacher-led.
Clubs and classes If you’re not lucky enough to live close to a forest school, there are after-school clubs and classes that can support children’s learning outdoors. Many schools have nature or gardening clubs, often run by parent volunteers. Tried-and-tested outdoor organizations, the Scouts and Girl Guides, offer a range of activities and camps. The less traditional Woodcraft Folk, (http://woodcraft.org.uk) focus on developing children’s connection with activities exploring issues around nature and the natural environment.
Family nature days As well as providing accessible venues for school and group outings, the Wildlife Trusts run activities across the UK just for families and children, organised by local groups, ranging from ‘nature tots’ toddler groups to family pond-dipping days. Go to the Forestry Commission website at www.forestry.gov.uk, to find your nearest woodlands. They have a free app with maps and local information on camping, trails and activities. At many of their forest centres you can buy a pack that will take you on a ‘Superworm’ kids trail, which includes activities and challenges for younger children. To get the whole family moving, you could try geocaching. The National Trust has set up free trails– all you need is a GPS enabled device that uses coordinates (you can use a smartphone). Download co-ordinates to find the caches (small waterproof boxes of ‘treasure’). The Trust also provide less ‘techy’ outdoor activities for families – their 50 things to do before you're 11¾ is a good starting point. You can pledge some ‘wild time’ with your children by signing up to The Wild Network – an organisation dedicated to reconnecting children with nature, at projectwildthing.com. They have a calendar of different events, and lots of fun activity ideas that will get you and your kids outdoors. The film that inspired the organization is available to watch online, it’s an interesting take on how to ‘re-brand’ nature to appeal to the younger generation, who they claim are suffering from ‘nature-deficit disorder’.

Top London Visits for Kids to Try before they’re 12 Despite being voted the top capital city for a family holiday, seventy per cent of UK parents haven’t visited London with their children. The top reason that parents tend to overlook London is that it’s perceived to be too expensive, however, over half of the top London experiences for kids to try before they’re 12 years old are actually free, whilst visiting all ten attractions would cost a family of four under £200 in total. So this summer, why not try one of these top ten London treats with your family? • Travel the Underground – free for 10 and younger. • Ride on the top of a double decker buss – free for 10 and younger. • Take a ride on the London Eye. • See the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace – free to see. • See the dinosaur skeletons at the Natural History Museum – free general entrance. • Go to the Science Museum – free general entrance. • See the penguins at London Zoo. • Visit Winter Wonderland – free to visit • Buy a toy from Hamleys. • See the Houses of Parliament – free to see.
It’s a Bug’s Life at Manydown This year the theme for the ever popular giant maize maze at Manydown is Bugs! Do you know your ants from your dragonflies or your beetles from your butterflies? Test out your bug knowledge as you work your way around the maze and try not to get lost. In the maze you’ll become bug detectives, trying to solve bug related clues as you navigate your way. The maze itself will be in the shape of a ladybird and a beautiful butterfly. Once the kids have enjoyed bug detecting they can spend time in the Fun Field with activities including a tractor tyre mountain, giant trampolines and inflatables and a new crazy golf course. Refreshments after all that activity can be found in the Farmers Retreat Café or Daisy’s Dairy Shack. All activities are included in the price of your ticket. There is an extensive child and adult menu offering everything from a cup of coffee or an ice-cold slush puppy, to a great meal for all the family. From 27th July to 4th September, Reading Play will be running an exciting holiday club at The Mad House. See the website for more details www.themadhousereading.co.uk
Experience Jurassic Golf Something prehistoric is stirring at The Oracle Riverside in Reading and if you’ve visited lately you may well have spotted some life-size dinosaurs loitering with intent. In fact they form part of a Jurassic Park themed golf course, plenty of dinosaurs, even a T-Rex! The 9-hole course is (unsurprisingly) the only golfing game of its kind and it’s designed for all the family to test their putting skills. So, if your family are mini-golf fans, head on down to the Riverside before the end of September when the dinosaurs will be on the move again. Adults £4.50, Under 12’s £4 and Under 4’s £3.
Playtime for all ages with the National Trust When the sun is out, the days are long and the skies are blue, it’s not only children who want to come out to play. The National Trust is doing more and more to offer visitors of all ages the chance to unwind and relax in their beautiful gardens, parkland and countryside, with natural play areas, picnic spots, quiz trails and other family attractions throughout the school holidays. Back by popular demand is the National Trust challenge, 50 things to do before you’re 11 and three-quarters, giving children the chance to reconnect with nature through simple pleasures such as climbing a tree, skimming a stone and making a daisy chain. You can pick up a scrap book at any participating property, download a local planner or visit www.50things.org.uk. There’s plenty of fun for grown-ups too. Many National Trust gardens are at their colourful best in summer with cool, shady spots, perfect for picnics and chilling out. Outdoor theatre is one of the highlights of the National Trust’s summer season and this year there’s a wide choice of productions at venues across the Thames Valley, from Shakespeare to Marty McDonald’s Farm. How to Fly with a Baby Six Survival Tips
Flying with a baby or toddler soon? In fear of being one of ‘those’ passengers? The ones who have numerous pairs of disapproving eyes fixed on them, nervously praying that you won’t be seated next to them? Then the same accusing eyes wondering why you had the audacity to go on holiday with a baby? How dare you right? And that’s just one of your concerns! Carrie Bradley is a mummy and former flight attendant with over twelve years’ experience. Here she shares her top survival tips to ease the anxiety of flying with babies and toddlers: Firstly, let me reassure you, it’s very possible to fly with little ones and maintain your sanity, maybe even watch part of a movie and enjoy a glass of wine. There may be puke, there may be poo explosions, but you WILL survive. As a former flight attendant, I wanted to install my daughters with the same love of different countries and culture that I have, plus with my hubby being Australian, they have to get used to ultra long visits to see relatives. My eldest was 11 weeks old on her first flight. She has accomplished over 20 flights, before she turned three, so you could say I’ve picked up a few survival tips along the way and hopefully they will reassure you.
can also request a baby meal (pureed food jars) and for those over two, a child meal. Singapore Airlines even provide a post-weaning meal! Plenty of finger food snacks also while away the time. It’s also worth mentioning that several companies will deliver baby supplies such as nappies and milk to your destination. Travel Tots (www.traveltotsuk.com) and Little Logistics (www. littlelogistics.com) are two UK based companies that will deliver overseas.
change or two of clothes for baby and for you too. My husband learned that the hard way despite a gentle reminder when packing. To try and keep packing light, use Calpol and/or ibuprofen 5ml sachets. Other key necessities include favourite toys/comforter, LOTS of snacks and new entertainment. Whether that’s new toys wrapped up to keep toddlers busy, or a downloaded show from CBeebies. If you are using a buggy travel bag, stuff a few extra nappies inside to make the most of your luggage allowance and further protect your pram.
Allow Extra Time To get to the airport, to get through security, to pick up your pre-ordered milk from Boots at UK airports, for the last minute clothes/nappy changes, to wear the toddlers out at airport soft play, to breathe. You CAN do this.
Be Prepared
Pack Wisely Use or pack a baby carrier in your hand luggage. This helps keep hands free when wrestling with luggage at the other end. Don’t’ forget a spare PAGE 14

Preparation is absolutely key. Research which airline best caters to your needs. Be it the longest bassinet, the best infant baggage allowance, complimentary strollers in transit or even a sky nanny on board like Gulf Air or Etihad. Once you have your preferred airline chosen, book your bassinet. Airlines such as British Airways allow you to choose your seat online as soon as you have bought your ticket. Knowing where you are sitting can help ease the stress. Note short haul flights on many airlines do not provide bassinets, but don’t despair. If it’s just the two of you, plus baby, it can often be worth choosing seats which leave a seat between you. If the flight has space, you could end up with a bonus spare seat for baby and avoid the whole lap scenario. Even if it doesn’t work out, most people would be very happy to swap the middle seat and move so they don’t have to sit between your family.
Baby Milk and Food This CAN be over 100ml whether it’s powered, pre-mixed, breast milk or pureed. Since January 2014, UK security no longer need to taste it, but it may be subject to further testing. I would advise to always pack a little more than you would normally use, just in case of any flight delays etc. You can pre-order formula milk from Boots online and select the UK airport you are departing from as your collection point. On many airlines, especially long haul, you
Yes, many airlines do provide priority boarding for families with young children but this is not always such a great idea. It can just prolong the amount of time a wriggly infant has to be confined. We found that if my husband boards first with all the baby gear and hand luggage and finds somewhere to stow it and then I board with the little ones a bit later on, everyone is much calmer.
Take turns Have one of you on duty for an hour and then swap. You might even get chance to watch a movie or catch up on some much needed sleep! Remember, the flight WILL end and the holiday on the other side makes it all worthwhile. And as for the other child-free passengers, you can relax with a relatively smug face, it may be their turn one day….. Summer Activities
Holidays! Kids can go techcrazy in Reading Parents looking for a fun and educational activity for their kids this summer holiday can book a holiday camp with Fire Tech Camp – the leading tech camp provider for children and teens, offering a number of five day courses which aims to get kids channeling their energy into creating, rather than just playing, video games. Courses are designed for kids aged 9-17, with something to suit every tech preference. Teens with their eyes set on coding can join a week-long ‘Teen Coding with Python’ course that covers the theory and fundamentals of computer science, teaching them to code from the ground up using Python. Campers aged 9-12 wanting to get a bit more hands on can try out the ‘Minecraft Maker’ course where they can create their own world, blocks and structures and even experiment with different materials to create physical game controllers. These courses and lots more take place at the University of Reading between 10th and 14th August 2015 and cost £400. Scholarships are available for those who require them. For more information visit www.firetechcamp.com

MAD Academy Reading for Sale
Razzamataz Wokingham Performing arts are widely spoken about as being one of the most positive influences on a child’s life. It’s not only for kids who want to go and and make a career on the stage – performing arts stimulates all children’s creativity, helps them make sense of their emotions, develops their language and communications skills, introduces new ideas and allows them to express opinions. Razzamataz Wokingham is an award-winning school and part of a national chain of theatre schools that achieved recognition after a successful appearance on BBC’s Dragon’s Den. Razzamataz Wokingham has just been taken over by Denise HuttonGosney, the founder of the successful theatre school franchise who appeared on Dragon’s Den in 2007. Denise has been a performer all her life and is now dedicated to helping young people achieve their dreams through theatre arts training. “The most rewarding part of my job is watching the progress of our students,” says Denise. “From huge professional roles such as performing in Ed Sheeran’s new video for ‘Bloodstream,’ TV shows and parts on the professional West End stage to hearing testimonials from the parents of our shyest students, it is an honour to play a part in these young people’s lives.” Razzamataz Wokingham is held every Saturday morning during term time and encourages all children and young people to try their hand at performing arts to give them the skills in which to better express themselves, leading to increased confidence and self-esteem. To book a free trial session at Razzamataz Wokingham on Saturday mornings, call 0118 324 0226 or email Wokingham@razzamataz.co.uk
After eleven MAD years at the helm of MAD Academy Reading, owner Trish Nawacki has decided to hang up her teaching boots and put the business up for sale. “I have learned so much from the experience of running my own business,” she says, “and I’ve been delighted to be part of the MAD brand while it grew from a single franchise to running in locations all over the UK. I started the business when my youngest daughter was three months old and it has been a fantastic flexible career for me while my children have been growing up. Now my children are both in senior school, the time is right for me to move on.” Trish is looking for an extra special person who loves music, dancing and children to take over the reins. MAD Academy Reading is well known in the area and offers fun, educational and very physical sessions for babies and children up to five years. The business for sale covers Reading, Caversham, Woodley, Earley, Burghfield, Tilehurst, Purley and surrounding areas. Classes are held in established public venues, children’s centres and nurseries and are staffed by a team of three teachers. There is considerable opportunity for additional venues within the area and for future expansion. The team also run parties and participate in local events. The business sale includes a large selection of props, musical instruments and equipment for use in the classes. To find out more contact Trish on 0118 977 0050 or email trish.nawacki@ madacademy.com
