Editor’s Letter

Welcome back! I can hardly believe it has been a whole year since my eldest daughter Millie started at primary school! When my children were born, I lost count of the amount of people who told me, ‘they grow up in the blink of an eye… before you know it, they’ll be starting school…’ how right they were! Last August, as the end of the long summer holidays approached, I was filled with the same excitement and anxieties that I’m sure all parents with children starting school feel to some extent. Just seeing Millie trying on her school uniform was usually enough to set me off! Then once she settled in, I had to navigate the minefield of playground, teacher and parent etiquette! If you’ve got little ones entering Foundation this year, I wish you luck and a stiff upper lip on the first day of school! Do read our fun feature on page 11, which will demystify some of the unwritten school rules that every parent should know! Elsewhere, if you’re looking for a new hobby to inspire or fascinate your child take a look at our Clubs and Classes Directory starting on page 26. You’re sure to find something they haven’t tried before – be it synchronised swimming, painting, golf, football or rock music! My daughters learned to swim this summer on a very enjoyable crash course with GR Swimming, and have both found a new passion for the water as a result. We’ll be keeping up the swimming lessons! Meanwhile, it’s only a few weeks until Christmas, so I do hope you’re just like me and have already done all your festive shopping and present wrapping!! Best wishes Lucy

Feeling anxious about returning to work? You’re not alone. A recent study by Proctor & Gamble revealed that more than 60% of new mums experience feelings of anxiety and a drop in confidence when their maternity leave ends. Cognitive Hypnotherapist Samantha Grant reveals she sees many new mums in her Caversham practice with a variety of worries including fears that they will have been ‘left behind’ by colleagues, that they won’t remember how to do their job, or that their childcare arrangements will fall through. She explains that this loss of confidence is completely normal, ‘It is easy to imagine feeling alone, useless or outside your comfort zone. Hypnotherapy can be effective after just a few sessions, at it helps the brain ‘re-write’ these self-fulfilling prophecies and gives mums a mental toolkit for dealing with anxieties so they can make positive changes. There are no swinging watches as many people imagine!” For more information on cognitive hypnotherapy, visit Samantha’s website at www.samanthagrant.co.uk or call 07919 577 512. The new Rocking Horse Nursery opens its doors in Newbury Newbury Racecourse has a brand new state of the art nursery, offering affordable, flexible childcare for parents of children from three months to five years. For founder and manager Rosina Reynolds, it is the accomplishment of a vision she had over twenty years ago to turn the existing on-site racecourse crèche into a full time day-care facility for families living and working locally. She says: “The facilities really are second to none. We have worked tirelessly with experts in their particular field to ensure we have the best possible building, fixtures, fittings and atmosphere for every stage of a child’s development. The new building has six spacious and airy playrooms dedicated to the developmental stages of the children, with each playroom also having its own secure garden. In addition, children attending the nursery will enjoy use of a separate wellstocked library, a soft play room and a sensory room. The Rocking Horse Nursery has always provided value and flexibility and this will remain the case, with sessions starting at just £25.50. There are limited places available for all age groups. Please call 01635 48969, visit www. rockinghorsenurserynewbury.co.uk or email info@rockinghorsenurserynewbury for more information or to arrange a visit.

New Head for St Edward’s Stuart Morgan-Nash will take up the post of Headmaster at St Edward’s Prep in September. Stuart was previously Deputy Head at Warminster School in Wiltshire, where he was also Head of Maths and taught science and boys’ sports. St Edward’s has recently become a part of Wishford Schools, a small group of independent prep schools, and has benefitted from a huge amount of investment in the fabric of the school, in educational resources including a new and fully equipped Computer Science Laboratory, and in specialist staff. St Edward’s Prep already enjoyed a very impressing reputation for preparing boys for entry to the region’s leading grammar and independent senior schools at 11+ and 13_ and with Stuart’s arrival and the expertise and support Wishford Schools brings, this reputation is set to grow.

Child-centered Education without compromising on standards Montessori education is based on the fundamental belief that a child learns best within an environment that supports and nurtures individual needs and development. The whole child is considered important and at Meadowbrook, progressive Montessori education, incorporating the best of mainstream practice, has been offered to children from 18 months to 11 years for nearly twenty five years. Progressive Montessori education is favoured by schools such as Meadowbrook, where the philosophy remains intact but where it is acknowledged that ‘education for life’ should follow the needs of the child within today’s society, It follows that graduates of Meadowbrook’s unique style go on to successfully securing places at a range of selective schools, grammar and state - many winning scholarships. By joining the community from the time they can walk (through the weekly parent and toddler sessions) and gradually increasing their sessions through the preprimary department and graduating successfully at 11, Meadowbrook children benefit from what is referred to as ‘all through’ education. A seamless journey through the most important years of their education. To find out more call 01344 890869 go to www.meadowbrookmontessori.org

Harriet House builds self esteem in idyllic environment Harriet House is a Montessori based Nursery and Pre-Preparatory School (pupils aged 2½ 7 years old) that is all about building self esteem and confidence. Based in a blissful walled garden on the Yattendon Estate, it encompasses five acres for adventures: tricycling, tree climbing and a mud kitchen. On ‘Woodland Wednesdays’ there’s a picnic lunch, marshmallows included. In September the annual Harriet House Literary Festival will feature readings from famous authors and the opportunity for children to write and illustrate their own stories. Harriet House’s next Open Day is on Tuesday 20th October from 10am-12noon, www.harriethouseschool.co.uk

New School Rules As we head back into another academic year, Families Thames Valley West offers a few handy reminders about the behaviour expected of new school mums, and a quick refresher course for those who have already done playground time. By Alison Hathaway.

(it’s not). Never, however, agree to a sleepover under any circumstances. Or only if you’re away for the night and your own parents are babysitting.

I. Thou Shalt Run Late

Experts say excessive time spent watching TV or playing video games can damage young minds. We agree, although we’d would also like to note that about the only time the horrors aren’t bugging us is when they’re plugged into the Playstation or similar. We suggest compromising at no more than four hours’ screentime per day – just long enough for a relaxing facial, pedicure and lunch with friends.

No, we not talking about after-dark jogs (one great benefit of being a mum is that you’ll never ever have time to exercise again – so you can stop making excuses and wasting money on gym membership). We’re talking about constantly being five minutes behind where you ought to be, first thing in the morning especially. Can you lie in until 8.30am and still get the kids to school by nine? We think you probably can, especially if you don’t feed them any breakfast – and you can have yours when you get home.

II. Thou Shalt Forget Stuff Ginny’s tutu, Timmy’s football kit, Johnny’s packed lunch (if you even remembered to make it in the first place) – yes, you’ll forget all of them. Or maybe Timmy will get the tutu, and Ginny will get the football kit, and you’ll get the packed lunch (yum!). Or you’ll tie up the dog outside the school gates and only remember she’s still there the following morning when you wake up at 8.35am wondering why the house is so strangely quiet.

III. Thou Shalt Bake Cakes for the PTA Everyone loves a good PTA cake sale – and you’ll be expected to contribute. Aim to spend most of preceding day baking. If your kids are like mine, they’ll then buy back all the cakes you’ve spent the previous day making, with the end result that you’re five quid poorer and have now got to carry the wretched things all the way back home again.

VI. Thou Shalt Carefully Monitor Screentime

IX. Thou Shalt Feel Stupid Doing Homework IV. Thou Shalt Embarrass Thyself At Mums’ Nights Out It’s not just your kids who are going to make lots of wonderful new friends at school. It’s vitally important for your children that you fully immerse yourself in the life of the school and bond with your fellow parents. So grit your teeth and get out there, forcing down that fifth glass of Cab-Sav, reluctantly ordering that Death by Chocolate desert and armwrestling your new chums for the right to have first crack at the gorgeous Spanish waiter. The sacrifices we make for our kids, eh?

V. Thou Shalt Host Playdates As for your children’s friends, consider them a strategic resource. Inviting your child’s friends around for a playdate can earn you some valuable chocolate and Chardonnay time, assuming they can entertain themselves. If not, simply lock them both in your child’s bedroom (taking care to secure windows beforehand) and challenge them to get out. Pretend it’s a game

Don’t be surprised when your children start asking you some awkward questions. And not just ‘Mummy, mummy, where do little babies come from?’ but also things like ‘How do you divide 214 by 17.5?’ and ‘What’s the capital of Namibia?’ and ‘How do you define post-modernism within the Aristotelian philosophical tradition?’ Tell them to look on the computer (see Rule VI above).

X. Thou Shalt Sit Through School Plays and Christmas Shows And your own children will never have any lines – and indeed might not even be visible, having been cast as ‘Rear End of Pantomime Goat’ or similar. Which doesn’t mean you won’t be expected to bring the camcorder, record the entire show, and then sit down back home and watch it all over again. Alison Hathaway’s new novel, ‘Class’ – a tale of twisted love, even more twisted parents, PTA politics and how to cook the perfect mashed potatoes – is out now on Amazon Kindle (bit.ly/classkindle). Follow Alison Hathaway on Twitter @ChalfenMagna or visit the website www.AlisonHathaway. co.uk for news and special free book giveaways.

Shiplake College in Henley on Thames is celebrating after receiving the highest possible grade of achievement in a recent full ISI inspection, placing it amongst the leading schools in the country. Earlier this year, a team of ISI inspectors visited the college and observed lessons, conducted formal interviews with pupils and examined samples of pupils’ work. They held discussions with staff, observed extra-curricular activities, conducted a full assessment of boarding, reviewed exam results and analysed the response of parents and pupils to pre-inspection questionnaires. In their assessment of the ‘quality of academic and other achievements’, inspectors concluded that ‘pupils receive a high quality of education, consistent with the school’s aims to provide a broad education that encourages individuals to achieve their full potential’. Further analysis found that ‘pupils are enthusiastic and committed in their learning, underpinned by excellent teaching and learning support.’ Headmaster Gregg Davies said, ‘We are proud and thrilled to be formally recognised as one of the leading independent schools in the country. It is an honour to be classed as ‘excellent’ in every domain, affirming our belief that the College has evolved and progressed significantly in recent years.’

Boys welcome at Luckley House The start of a new academic year is always an exciting time for schools, but this September has been particularly special for Luckley House School in Wokingham as the school opened its doors to boys for the first time in its 97 year history. Head Jane Tudor is thrilled with the positive response to the move to coeducation, with a good number of boys joining Year 7 and Year 12 this year, and significant interest in places for 2016 and beyond! Luckley House School is an excellent school, with exceptional academic standards. At GCSE, the average ‘value added’ is one grade, which means that pupils achieve an average of a grade higher in each of their subjects than pupils of similar ability in other schools. With flexible day and boarding provision and a fleet of minibuses providing daily transport across Berkshire, Hampshire and Surrey, pupils at Luckley join the school from a wide catchment area. As part of its ‘pioneer initiative’ the school is offering a range of special awards for boys joining the school in 2015 and 2016. In addition, meanstested bursaries, academic, art, music, sport and drama scholarships are available for all pupils.

Reading rock school inspires stars of the future Budding pop stars are being offered a chance to experience performing like their favourite bands and artists at a brand new rock music school opening in Reading this September. The Rock Project, which is set to open in three locations across the area, helps young people aged 7 to 18 to develop as guitarists, bassists, drummers or vocalists whilst also giving them the opportunity to play together as a band. The weekly schools will be held by Harmeet Nandra , with all music sessions taught by professional, working musicians. Father of two Harmeet worked in the city before following his passion for music. He said, ‘My wife and I have a philosophy of encouraging our children to follow their hearts in whatever they want to achieve and similarly I felt the time was right for me to do exactly the same. When I heard about The Rock Project I was inspired by the excellent work it does to help young people nurture their creativity. By developing a young person’s musicality you also build their confidence, which helps them grow into more rounded individuals. There isn’t enough emphasis on music in mainstream education and that’s why The Rock Project is the perfect opportunity for budding young musicians.” The Rock Project will run weekly sessions for Juniors (7-11) and Seniors (12-18) at North Thatcham Children’s Centre, Charvil Primary School and Meadow Park Academy. Bellydancing is a dance form that celebrates all that is feminine, enhancing the natural curve of a woman’s body. Through mastering the movements you can also gain increased flexibility and strength and when both of these are combined it gives you greater control over your body. It can also improve your self-esteem and selfconfidence as Rachel says, ‘It is a human instinct to be creative and bellydancing is one way of expressing your creativity through dance.’

Have fun going ‘back to school’ with BilinguaSing and learn a new language September is ‘back to school’ time when many people look to take up a new activity to fill the dark autumn and winter months. Here’s why learning a new language should be top of the list for all parents with babies, toddlers and preschool children. Amazingly, babies are born ready to learn any language in the world. In theory therefore, a baby with English speaking parents should have no more difficulty learning Russian than a baby with Russian heritage. In practice, it’s the experiment of being immersed in a language that babies use to ‘tune in’ to their native language and gradually ‘tune out’ of foreign ones. So the best time for a little one to learn a second (or even third!) language is while

Starmaker Stage School

they are mastering their first. Berkshire-based company BilinguaSing, that runs award-winning French and Spanish bilingual singing, music and movement classes thinks we should be

starting our language learning journey as early as possible. Kate Sleeman runs BilinguaSing classes in the Wokingham area and commented, ‘as an English, Spanish and French speaker myself I have tried to expose my own two daughters to all three languages from an early age. And in my classes I am constantly amazed at how quickly the little ones are soon singing along with our songs in Spanish or French. We prove that it’s never too soon (or too late) to go ‘back to school’ and have fun with a new language.’ Your first BilinguaSing class is FREE to try. Halloween Fun

Make your own Halloween decorations Have fun with a few simple art and craft activities and transform your home into a witch’s cavern or haunted house. Create lanterns, flying bats or make a scary, floating ghost by wrapping a piece of white material or a white bin bag over a balloon and drawing on a spooky face. For a Halloween feast or tea party, use a paper plate and card shaped into a cone to make a witches hat as a table decoration. Add a lantern and some creepy treats to create the perfect setting for a spooky supper! Try these ideas ...

Halloween Lantern Create a stunning but easy to make Halloween lantern to decorate your garden or window. Materials: - 2 pipe cleaners or pieces of garden wire - glue - tissue paper - patterned wallpaper or wrapping paper - scissors

Method: 1. Cut the pattered paper and tissue paper into strips of the same size

2. Cut shapes into the patterned paper

Make this scary bat to decorate your house, or as a spooky present to take to a party! Materials: - toilet roll tube - black poster paint - black card - scissors - string - sticky tape - coloured poster paint or goggly-eyed stickers. 1. Fold the top of the tube inside to create two points making ears. Then, turning the tube sideways, do the same again to create a point at the bottom making the shape of a bat’s body. 2. Once folded, paint the whole toilet roll tube in black poser paint for a really scary bat look.

3. Stick the tissue paper onto the back of the patterned paper

4. Stick the paper strips onto the jar

5 .Twist the two wires together into a crucifix shape. Turn the crucifix upside down so that the long end points straight up.

6. Place the horizontal wire that forms the cross of the crucifix around the rim of the jar, twisting the ends together to secure. Then bend the ‘long’ tail up and over the top of the jar. Twist the ‘tail’ to the horizontal wire to secure the handle. 7. Place a tea light inside and your lantern is ready!

PAGE 30

Toilet Tube Bat

3. Take a piece of black card and fold it in half, then draw two small curves at the bottom to create spiky bat wings. Cut this into shape.

4. Fold the piece into a concertina zig-zag shape to give the wings lots of body and make some scary shadows.

5. Cut two small holes on each side of the tube where the wings should go, then thread the folded wings through.

6. Open up the wings and fold them into shape. Add some spooky eyes with paint or goggly-eye stickers. Tape some string to the back, and get ready to scare all your friends with your frightening hanging bat!
