PARENTING

Keeping Your Child Safe Online

There is no doubt that the online world has become as much a part of everyday life as breakfast, lunch and dinner. For this reason, it’s imperative that you ensure your child is safe online. Here are some tips: Be a Part of your Child’s Online Life You are far more likely to get a sense of how your child is using the internet if you talk to them about it. Involve the whole family in discussions, ask questions and listen to the answers. Show interest. If your children are using Minecraft, ask them to show you how it works and talk to them about what they are creating there. Ask them what sites they love and what they are doing when they visit them. If they know you are actively interested and understand, they are more likely to come to you if they have concerns or problems.

Watch Thinkuknow Films and Cartoons with your Child The Thinkuknow site at www.thinkuknow. co.uk is an education initiative by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre, the UK’s national law enforcement agency that focuses on tackling the sexual abuse of children. It provides a guide to internet safety and safe surfing for young people from ages 5 to 16 with films and games about online safety when using blogs, chatting, online gaming, and P2P. Encourage your Child to Explore Online! There are a wealth of age-appropriate sites online for children. Encourage your child to use sites which are fun, educational and that will help them develop online skills. Keep Up-to-Date with your Child’s Development Online Children grow up fast and they learn new skills daily. This means that regular and

continuous discussion about their online life is necessary so that you can stay abreast of where they are at. It’s important that as your child learns more, you do too. Set Boundaries Think about what your children might be seeing online, what they might be sharing, who they are talking to and how long they spend online. It’s important to discuss and set boundaries for children from a young age including time limits on the internet and restriction of content via search engine filters. Keep all Internet-Connected Equipment in a Family Space For primary school age children, it is important to keep internet use in family areas so you can monitor the appropriateness of the sites your child is using and be there to offer explanation if they stumble across something that isn’t age-appropriate. Know What Connects to the Internet and How Nowadays even the television connects to the internet. Make sure you’re aware of which devices your child uses to connect to the internet, such as their phone or games console. Also, ensure that your child is accessing the internet via your connection. If they are somehow accessing it via a neighbour’s Wi Fi, the safety settings you have set will not be applied. Use Parental Controls on Internet-Connected Devices These might include television, laptops, computers, games consoles and mobile phones. Parental controls are not just about ‘locking and blocking,’ they are a tool to help you set appropriate boundaries as your child grows and develops. They are not the answer to your child’s online safety, but they do offer a good start and are not as difficult to install as you might think. Service providers are working hard to make them simple, effective and user friendly. Ask your local service provider how to set your controls. The Timeless Answer to Internet Safety Sometimes giving advice and telling children how to stay safe online is not enough. Threats to your child’s safety may come from both content and other users. Investigate Cyberoam NetGenie, a Smart Wireless Router, which monitors and filters online activity and protects families, children and devices at home from internet risks. How interesting that I was asked to write this article the very same week that a terrorist attack in France raised fear levels all over the world. From the moment our children are born we are responsible for their health and safety. There are so many things we could be fearful about: how they will get on in life; whether we will mess them up and they will hate us for it; giving them too much or too little independence; that they will be picked on by others, find it hard to make friends, become addicted to drugs, become unwell….the list is positively endless. It’s important not to become too caught up with these types of fears. Worrying endlessly doesn’t achieve anything, makes us stressed and takes us away from potential moments of happiness in the present. Often how we cope with fearful possibilities is influenced by how our parents coped with their own fears when they were bringing us up. As a child, my mother was in Paris when war broke out and got separated at the age of 5 from her parents and put into a prisoner of war camp. I believe this experience

Worrying endlessly doesn’t achieve anything, makes us stressed and takes us away from potential moments of happiness in the present. coloured the rest of her life and that she was unable to feel completely safe again. She was over-protective and very careful of me as a child. The result? I have in the past been over-protective and careful with my children. Consider how you were parented and what effect it has had on you and your own parenting style. We can be assured that our children will be in a dangerous situation at least once and probably many times in their lives. We can endlessly worry about this; we can become overprotective; or we can learn to trust ourselves and our children to handle what comes

up, confronting each situation in the knowledge that eventually the outcome is most likely to be positive, even if there are difficulties to get through. Such is the power of trust. One of the consistent themes of my parenting coaching is connection. Staying connected to our children is important for maintaining trust. When we are connected, we are on the same team and, even in the teenage years, it means we can talk and discuss our beliefs and experiences with each other, including things like dangerous situations and how they might be dealt with. Staying connected means spending time with your children, so try to make a little time each day. Finally, it is important not to confuse trust with naivety. When we are naive, we bury our head in the sand about a problem, hide from the issues and then act surprised when they bite us on the backside. Trusting means recognising problems and trying to deal with them, accepting that they may get worse before they get better, but believing that things will work out for the best in the end. Trust is the belief in your own ability (and that of your children)

to learn, change, and have the courage to handle whatever needs to be handled in a mature and wise way. Trust gives you confidence and will get you

through most situations. Trust and faith are the same thing and we all have faith in something; you may as well include yourself in that faith!

DOES YOUR CHILD HAVE SANDY PANTS? By Louise Fox

Choosing a nursery for your toddler can be daunting, with many factors to consider. However, the bottom line is: are you comfortable walking away and leaving your child at the setting? If the answer is “yes,” then you have found a nursery that will work for you. Ask yourself the following: Does this Nursery Pass the SWOPS test? In other words, is it Safe, Warm, Organised, Professional and Stimulating? You provide all these things for your child at home and you should also expect them from your child’s nursery. Try Not to Choose based on Convenience Go the extra mile, if need be. When interviewing parents, I am always a little disappointed when choice is made due to how quickly mum or dad can get to work. This is obviously a factor but it shouldn’t be the first priority. What Kind of Nursery Would you Like? A stand-alone or through-school? A play group or something more structured? Term time or year round care? Identifying your preferences will help you prepare a short list. Staff/Pupil Ratios and Qualifications When you visit settings, ask about this. Ratios should be minimum 1 carer to 4 children for 2 year olds and 1 carer to 8 children for 3 year olds, depending on staff qualifications. Check how many children there are in the same room. There is a limit! Ask about staff qualifications. There are so many nursery qualifications these days, that it’s easy to get lost in the technicalities. Ideally, nursery

staff should be qualified to at least NVQ3 or equivalent. Pose a scenario to the nursery staff you meet. For instance, ‘what would you do if my child had a serious injury to the head?’ Listen carefully to the answer. Would staff take the initiative? Do they show confidence in how they would handle this situation? What is the Nursery Like Inside? Is it secure and safe? Light and airy? Your child will benefit from a spacious, bright and colourful environment. Is the nursery clean? You shouldn’t be offered coffee in dirty mugs or need to brush crumbs off the nearest chair. Having said that, the nursery shouldn’t be sterile – young children are naturally messy. What

you are looking for is happy, clean and organised mess! If the nursery has its own uniform and aprons for the children, so much the better, but if your child comes home with sand in his pants, that isn’t necessarily a cause for complaint. In fact, it’s a positive. It probably means he’s been having a wonderful time in the sandpit! What is the Outside Space like? Can the children access it all the time? Provide children with

a fallen log and some muddy puddles and they are in play heaven. If the nursery offers Forest School, check that the so-called ‘forest’ isn’t a mile away. Young children walking along busy roads to the nearest park defeats the object somewhat. Technology Be cautious about nurseries boasting that each child has an ipad or learning pad. There is definitely a place for technology in schools but for very young children it isn’t necessarily a priority. Why replace hands-on creative activities with a game on the ipad? Atmosphere You want to hear laughter, see smiles and feel a good atmosphere on your visit, to see happy children enjoying purposeful activities. Children who are allowed to flit from one activity to the other are neither engaged nor fulfilled. Ask about the purpose of the activities you see the children doing and read up on the Early Years Foundation stage for a better understanding of early year’s education. Good nurseries provide a caring and exciting new world for your child which you may not necessarily be able to provide at home. So don’t let sand in the pants get in the way of your child’s first steps at nursery!

extra than forwarding the profile of any candidate in the area who happens to be available. It goes without saying that your agency should thoroughly check a nanny’s background, ensuring that they have an up-to-date DBS (criminal background) check, thoroughly checked references, and a First Aid certificate. The agency should also verify original documents such as passports, proof of address and driving licence. These vital checks would take individual families many hours to complete and, without them, you and your children are very exposed. The best nanny agencies, including Mortimer Nannies, offer an in-home visiting service,

It is perfectly possible to find a nanny via the internet or word of mouth, but, how suitable will she really be for your family? The advantage of using a nanny agency is that it can find you the very best possible candidate for your situation and lifestyle – almost like a match-making service! This ensures your nanny is likely to really “fit” your family and stay with you as long as you need her. A nanny agency has access to the CVs of a wide range of potential candidates, but you do not have to spend your time sifting through them. Instead, your agency should listen to your needs and take note of your interests and personalities, providing you with just a few suitable CVs rather

which means a member of the agency team will visit you to discuss your needs face to face. This can be hugely helpful if you are employing a nanny for the first time or wish to employ a live-in nanny. An agency should also be able to walk you through the whole recruitment process, providing

MICRONURSERY IN RICHMOND OFFERS OUTSTANDING STAFF TO CHILD RATIOS By Linda Stone, Editor

If you are searching for a nursery for your child that replicates the extended family model that may have been accessible to you in times gone by, you should investigate Richmond Childcare. This micro-nursery offers more one-to-one time with children than most others in the area. All children under the age of twelve months have their very own carer, with two children for every carer between the ages of twelve months and three years. This unique approach guarantees the very highest levels of care for little ones during

their crucial early development, when their skills are developing so quickly. Richmond Childcare’s micro-nursery concept combines the personal approach of a childminding service with the social and educational elements of a traditional nursery. It provides childcare in a traditional home setting, minimising the institutional feel of some childcare settings, but with highly qualified staff and an in-house chef to prepare fresh meals for the children every day. It is very unusual for a nursery to have such a high staff to child carer ratio and it means that Richmond Childcare can give more individual attention to each child than a conventional nursery, where there can be as many as fifteen children to every carer or assistant. So much one-to-one time spent with each child allows a really personal approach. Every child’s needs are catered for and they receive the support they need to best promote their development and progress, rather than simply being provided with a safe space while parents work. Instead, time is taken and effort is devoted to ensure each child receives the appropriate level of one-to-one support.

The concept of the micro-nursery combines the very best elements of both a childminding service and a larger nursery setting. The domestic setting helps children to settle in quickly, while the wide range of toys, games and stimulating activities is typical of a traditional nursery. All staff at Richmond Childcare participate in regular training with Richmond borough council to ensure high standards of care, but without the pressure of looking after fifteen children at once, staff can devote their time to the care of individuals. Richmond Childcare also provides a highly social environment for little ones of different ages, helping them to develop other important skills. Babies and toddlers socialise together, with staff encouraging interaction between them. The presence of older children can help bring babies on developmentally, and similarly, the presence of babies can teach toddlers valuable lessons about nurturing and caring for others. Richmond Childcare is located at 11 Alton road, Richmond, TW9 1UJ. For more information, visit www.richmondchildcare.co.uk

WHAT’S NEW IN CHILDCARE?

By Maxine Henderson

There are a number of changes proposed by government which should supposedly make the cost of childcare cheaper in the near future. Here’s what you need to know about these changes and how they will work. Free Childcare for Children Ages 3 and 4 As you will probably now be aware, the government has offered 30 hours of free childcare a year for children ages 3 and 4 from September 2016. But is it really that straightforward? When Does the Scheme Start? In September 2016, but the scheme is not launching everywhere at this time. Instead, it will be piloted in some areas, and these are still to be determined. There is currently still no indication as to when the scheme will be available nationally. Which Parents will be Entitled to the 30 Hours? Unlike the current scheme, under which parents of 3 and 4 year olds are eligible for 15 hours of free childcare a week, the additional 15 hours will only be available to working parents. A statement on the government website says it will support up to 600,000 working families, but it is not clear at this stage how many hours parents should be working to qualify as “working parents.” Which Children will be Eligible? Children ages 3 or 4 in September 2016 living in the pilot areas with working parents (as stated above, the definition of working parents remains unclear) who have an annual household income of less than £150,000. Nurseries have already raised concerns about their ability to offer 30 hours of free, flexible, childcare. There is concern within the nursery industry that the money they receive from government to run the current grant scheme of 15 hours does not cover the costs they incur in providing these hours, meaning that an increase in free hours is simply not sustainable. Employment Minister, Priti Patel, has been tasked with launching a policy that will actually work in practice – no mean feat!

Replacement of Childcare Vouchers with Tax-Free Childcare Scheme Last year, the government’s proposals for delivering Tax-Free Childcare were found to be lawful by the Supreme Court and the changes should come into force early in 2017. The Tax-Free Childcare scheme will replace the current Childcare Vouchers system, although, parents who are currently signed up to the Childcare Vouchers scheme will be able to continue using it. The key differences between the two schemes are as follows: ✱ The current Childcare Vouchers scheme is a tax and National Insurance saving scheme, offered as a benefit from the employer of a parent, but only where the employer chooses to offer the scheme. The good news is that the new policy is expected to be open to all working parents who meet the set criteria. ✱ Where both parents work, families can save around £1,800 a year under the Childcare Vouchers scheme, but will save £2,000 per year under the new scheme. ✱ Self-employed parents will also

be eligible for support under the Tax-Free Childcare scheme. ✱ It appears that under the new proposals, the Tax-Free Childcare

scheme will only be available to one earner in a family where both parents are working. Families with a single earner will be excluded.

Flexible opening hours Monday to Sunday 5am-9pm Quality care and unique ratios: 1:1 for infants under 12 months 2:1 for children between 12m and 3yrs.

NEW SCIENCE GARDEN AT THE MALL SCHOOL IN TWICKENHAM! Late last year, the Deputy Mayor of Richmond upon Thames, Councillor Jean Loveland officially opened The Mall School’s science garden. During the opening, boys from Year 2 planted daffodil bulbs. The garden was built using funds raised by the school’s Parents’ Association. It will enable the boys to gain hands on experience of observing living organisms and collecting data for science investigations. The garden includes a greenhouse, potting benches, raised beds for growing flowers and vegetables, a weather station and, the main feature, a large, raised, wooden pond.

Boys will be able to take part in pond dipping activities and watch as resident frogs, toads and newts make use of the specially designed ‘amphibian highway’ into the pond. “The science garden is a fabulous additional facility for the School which I am certain will further our boys’ interest in the natural world” said David Price, Headmaster.

Year 7 pupils at Halliford School in Shepperton are truly embracing their musical talents and getting involved in the musical life of the school. Late last year, Halliford School held its annual Halliford Song Contest. Pupils from Years 7 to 13 participated in the Class and House event in which six weeks of student-led rehearsal culminated in one final, competitive concert. Pupils selected their own songs and were also required to prepare a performance of a ‘compulsory’ song, this year’s genre being the 1980’s. A week later, several Year

7 musicians made their solo debut. Supportive fellow peers and tutors filled the Recital Hall to enjoy the eclectic mix of piano duets and solos, classical and popular vocal music, bass, electric guitar and drum kit pieces. Pupils will also have the opportunity to enter the prestigious Halliford Young Musicican Competition this coming March.

STAINES PREP FLOURISHES IN ALL AREAS!

In September 2016, Newland House School, in Twickenham, will open the doors to a brand new Pre-Prep immediately adjacent to the Prep School. The development is on schedule and the core structure of the new building, which is constructed from sustainably sourced crosslaminated timber, is now complete. A group of Reception children recently donned tailor-made hard

hats and hi-visibility vests and undertook a tour of the new school. Site engineers walked the excited children around the structure pointing out their new classrooms, which will be ready for them to move into this September. They enjoyed scaling the stairs and admiring the spectacular views from the first floor windows over the existing Prep School playground. With the timber structure in place, they could appreciate how spacious and impressive the new school will be. Prospective parents are welcome to visit the school to see the development plans at first hand.

Staines Preparatory School prides itself on providing an educational experience which is both challenging and fun. The first term of the 2015/6 school year was no exception. Highlights included the arrival of a new Deputy Head, Matt Donaldson BA (Hons) and the launch of mixed gender sports teams with boys taking to the court in netball and girls joining boys on the football pitch! Meanwhile, the School’s choir began preparations for Voice in a Million, an event which takes place at Wembley Stadium later this year and raises awareness of children in care, adoption and fostering. It is a fantastic opportunity for the School’s very talented and passionate choir

which works so hard throughout the year performing to the local community. The School has also recently refurbished its environmental area, complete with bird-watching station, with parents, students and teachers coming together to create a world of exploration for children, which showcases outdoor education at its best.

SHOULD I READ TO MY PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILD? EDUCATION FOCUS SPRING 2016 Educating the Whole Child

By Linda Stone, Editor

Is it important to keep reading to children who have learned to read on their own? The answer is “yes!” According to recent research, when children begin to read independently (between the ages of 6 and 9), their parents often stop reading aloud to them. However, children of this age (and older) love to be read to. It’s special time with their parents and it means they can be exposed to more complex stories and ideas, with a parent present to explain meaning and vocabulary. Reading aloud to older children also increases their vocabulary and improves spelling and comprehension. It also often leads to discussion about new ideas and parents and children can enjoy chatting about the subjects the story raises together. Once your child can read independently, here are some tips for reading to them: ✔ Deliberately encourage them to choose books that are a little above their current reading age in which they won’t necessarily understand all the words or concepts, but in which the story is a little more sophisticated than those they can read to themselves. This will make being read to a very satisfying experience for your child. ✔ Introduce them to novels you loved as a child or research authors and novels you

think your child will enjoy online and in libraries and bookshops. ✔ If your child really engages with a novel and wants to continue to read it alone, go with this. However, it’s a good idea to suggest you re-read together the chapters they’ve read alone, so that you can build on the sense of an experience shared and iron out any comprehension blanks. “I started to read Hetty Feather to my 6 year old and she loves it so much she has continued to read it to herself” says Kingston mum, Marie.

Claremont Fan Court School

✔ Introduce story anthologies which include abridged versions of classic novels like Treasure Island and Heidi. Some publishing companies like Usborne or Barefoot Books even create child-friendly stand-alone versions of the classics, in books entitled The Adventures of Odysseus and The Adventures of Achilles. ✔ Visit libraries and bookshops often. Hunt for suitable books for your child yourself and encourage them to do the same. Note the titles in which they show interest and buy books for birthdays, Christmas – in fact, any time you can afford them! ✔ Download books on to a Kindle for when you travel.

✔ Follow your child’s interests. “My 8 year old son became very

interested in the World Wars after Remembrance Day, so we found some factual books for his age at the library” reports Weybridge mum, Shelley. ✔ Tell your child about books you are enjoying reading as an adult, so that they can see that reading can become a pleasurable, life-long pursuit. “My daughter became so engaged with my telling of the novel I was reading, that I ended up writing out a short version of it in a notebook for her. She’s re-read it many times and drawn pictures of the characters!” says Amber from Richmond. ✔ Make time for reading every day if you can, whether it’s at bedtime or on the couch after dinner. £1 donation to your PTA for every pair of school shoes purchased

PUPILS AT ATHELSTAN HOUSE SCHOOL EXPERIMENT WITH SCIENCE! The pupils at Athelstan House Pre-Preparatory School in Hampton always enjoy opportunities to work with the children from other classes, whether it is sharing books, teaching each other games, mentoring younger pupils or celebrating each other’s achievements. Science and Engineering Week in March provides an excellent opportunity for children of all ages to work alongside each other, which is why the staff and pupils are really looking forward to this year’s event. Last year the highlight of the week was a carousel of hands-on scientific experiments in the playground, with children working in mixed age groups to tackle each investigation. There was a real buzz about the day and it really heightened children’s interest in the subject. So much so, that Athelstan’s popular after school

science club, run by specialist teacher, Mrs Cranston, suddenly received a boost in numbers!

NEW NATURE TRAIL FOR TWICKENHAM PREP!

Twickenham Prep School in Hampton has just completed a new nature trail which its Reception children have been enjoying immensely. The trail was initiated by one of the teachers at the School who was keen to extend its outdoor leaning provision having completed a Forest Schools Course. The nature trail gives children the freedom to explore and

experience the outdoors using multiple senses. In discovering where creatures live, making potions, creating stories, building dens and using simple tools, the children learn to respect the environment. Weekly sessions are based on the Forest School principle, a child-led learning approach that uses the outdoors as an inspirational educational environment. As the weeks go by, the children’s self-esteem and confidence visibly grows as they learn new skills. With this comes resilience, awareness of the needs of others, and independence. The School hopes to shortly link up with its local feeder nursery schools to start sharing this unique, special space.

A NEW BEGINNING FOR DENMEAD SCHOOL! 2016 will be an exciting year for Denmead School in Hampton as pupils move into a state-ofthe-art new building and its name changes to Hampton Pre-Prep & Prep School. A stunning new building, situated between Gloucester Road and Carlisle Park, is accompanied by on-site playing fields and a multi-use games area. The new school will provide pupils with a bright, welcoming and purpose-built learning environment and classrooms equipped with bespoke facilities. Externally, the building’s architecture is

sympathetic to its surrounding neighbourhood and its cutting-edge, eco-friendly features include a ‘green roof’ covered with alpine plants. A ground source heat pump will use the earth’s energy to help heat the building in the winter and keep it cool during the summer months. The re-naming of Denmead School to Hampton Pre-Prep & Prep School will further enhance its close relationship with nearby 16

SMALLER CLASSES, GREATER ACHIEVEMENTS EDUCATION FOCUS SPRING 2016 Educating the Whole Child

By Jill Chatt-Collins

As anyone who has hosted birthday parties for young children knows, it can be quite tricky managing children’s needs when they are in a big group. Whilst trying to entertain the group, one child may need reassurance that mummy will be back soon, another might need comforting after a bumped knee, whilst a third might need to be discouraged from climbing on the furniture! In the same way, teaching large groups of children can be quite a challenge. Teachers generally aim their instruction to the middle achievers, with easier and more difficult examples of the same learning given to the less and more able. However, in large classes, those who need a bit of extra support may be left behind, whilst those who would benefit from being stretched and challenged may become disengaged if the learning is too easy. Several studies have shown that reducing class size increases overall student achievement, especially for younger children in the first two to four years in school. Professor Peter Blatchford of the University of London’s Institute of Education found that “in both reading and maths, pupils in small classes performed significantly better than pupils in regular classes.” Smaller class sizes provide great opportunities for personal attention and one-to-one support. Teachers can spend time with each of the children in their class to really get to know them, help them to excel at whatever they are good at and support them to improve their weaknesses. Instruction can also be aimed to appeal more towards each child in smaller class groups, with examples given that will be meaningful to each individual. With many more opportunities for the teacher to give each child one-to-one support, new skills and concepts are mastered quickly resulting in improved academic performance. The high levels of student participation and engagement in a smaller class are important factors in this improved academic performance. Teachers have time to listen to and answer children’s questions; no hand goes unseen and no voice unheard. A love of learning and natural curiosity is more easily

fostered in a small class environment because there are more opportunities for children to ask questions and discuss their views with the teacher. Exploring their own thoughts and feelings in this way leads them to discover more about themselves. Children who know that their voice will be heard and their contribution valued become self-confident and articulate children, adept at speaking in public and well-practiced in sharing their views. Simply put, smaller class sizes allow for more

THE SCHOOL WHERE SMALL IS SPECIAL

It’s no surprise that small classes are often found in small schools, which can offer warmth, a personal touch and a home from home environment. Children and parents alike feel secure when they know they are part of a small community where everyone

personalised attention for students, better educational results, and an environment which can support the well-being of the whole child.

knows everyone. In this kind of environment, children grow quickly in confidence and their individual characters blossom. They also benefit from having the chance to be leaders at an early age, to mentor younger children and take on responsibilities that are often reserved for older children in a bigger school. Small class sizes are at the core of the philosophy of Athelstan House Pre-Preparatory School in Hampton. For its children, being a member of a small class is fundamental in their early learning and development and builds solid foundations for the future. The confidence and wellroundedness of the children leaving Athelstan House, combined with their excellent academic achievements, means they flourish at the best local prep schools, becoming prefects and head boys and girls, and going on to top Universities including Oxford and Cambridge. Athelstan House leavers include those who have represented the country in rugby and swimming, those who have careers in law, medicine and performing arts, as well as academics, mathematicians, engineers and scientists. WHEN FRIENDS FALL OUT

HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD COPE WITH PLAYGROUND ARGUMENTS By Liat Hughes Joshi

relatively minor, it’s sensible to suggest ‘leaving the children to sort it out’ or similar. If the situation is more serious, suggest that you would prefer the school to deal with it.

Your child is happy at school and has made some good friends. Then the dreaded playground squabble strikes, the tears roll and you’re not sure how to help. Here are some tips;

Always Speak to the Teacher….

Relax (a bit): It’s Normal! Ask any primary school teacher and they will doubtless tell you that kids fall out (and in again) as quickly as a round of Hokey Cokey. It’s normal and most squabbles are soon forgotten: kids don’t bear grudges in the way that adults sometimes do. Unfortunately this knowledge won’t console your heartbroken child much, so…

Resist the Temptation to Wade In!

Reassure, Hug and Listen Even if you know that the problem is likely to blow over, your child might well feel like their world is collapsing. Give hugs, provide a shoulder to cry on, talk (and talk more) and offer tissues. Help Your Children to Help Themselves Once your child is calmer, instead of providing “how to fix it” advice and possible solutions, encourage your child to think through what they could do to help resolve the situation, with guidance from you behind the scenes. If there’s been a misunderstanding, how might they instigate a chat in order to explain this? If another child is being consistently mean or unfair to them, who else could they play with instead?

Your parental “tiger-mum” instincts might make you feel as if you need to tackle the children involved, or their parents immediately, but hold back. Firstly, wait and see if the situation resolves itself. Confronting another child isn’t fair or appropriate. Confronting another parent may just escalate the drama; your son or daughter may be embarrassed if their parents get involved with their playground problems and doing so undermines any attempt by your child to at least have a go at sorting out the problem themselves. Proceed with Caution with Other Parents If the situation doesn’t resolve itself after a week and your child is not coping well with this, then inform your child’s teacher, rather than mentioning it to the parents of the child in question. If YOU are approached by another parent and you feel the kids’ argument was

If the dispute involved physical violence, becomes persistent, and/ or your child starts not wanting to go to school or is having trouble sleeping, then do raise the matter with their teacher. They can then keep a closer eye on the children involved, intervening if necessary. In a busy class of thirty, it’s understandable that they might not be aware of every falling out, but they should definitely take seriously any indicating that your child is being bullied or is unhappy at school. See this as a Learning Experience There might have been tears and upset but the reality is friends can fall out throughout life. The chances are that, by going through the experience, your child will have learned more about relationships and friendships and how to manage them and will be better equipped to deal with similar situations that may arise in the future.

JACK AND JILL SCHOOL OPENS NEW PREP DEPARTMENT!

Jack and Jill School is delighted to announce the opening of its Preparatory Department for girls aged 7 to 11 years at Clarence House in Hampton Hill in September 2016. This elegant Grade 2 listed building will be the home of girls transferring from Jack and Jill Pre-Preparatory Department (for whom entry is guaranteed) and others joining them after successful performance in the 7+ assessment.

Strongly academic in focus, the curriculum at Clarence House will place additional emphasis on science, technology, engineering and maths, enabling girls to excel in these subjects and aspire to careers in which women are traditionally under represented. An extended day will operate to allow for the rich and varied curriculum, in addition to a full programme of after school activities. Both the Jack and Jill and local Hampton Hill communities are excited about this extension to the School’s provision, especially as it coincides with the anniversary of its 65th year of operation as a traditional, family run, local school.

CHILDREN AT CLAREMONT FAN COURT MAKE PLANS FOR THE FUTURE! A nurse, a teacher, a builder and a rock star… Reception children at Claremont Fan Court Pre-Prep and Nursery School in Esher have been reflecting on occupations and thinking about what they would like to be when they grow up. Children discussed an item which they had brought into school related to their chosen job, whilst considering what the profession entails and the skills they would need to fulfil the role. Various cross-curricular activities encouraged their learning, including writing a simple sentence about an occupation and creating a paper puppet of

someone in a profession which helps us. The children also welcomed parent visitors who came to talk to them about their jobs, including a doctor and a parent who talked about the skeleton and massage therapy, with a focus on the feet. These visits greatly enhanced the topic and gave the children a brilliant insight into the working world.

THAMES CHRISTIAN COLLEGE WINS ISA SCHOOLS’ INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING AWARD! Thames Christian College is delighted to have won the Independent Schools Association Award for Outstanding Contribution to International Understanding in acknowledgement of its trips to Tanzania in 2014 and 2015 with the charity, Go Make a Difference. Last year the School raised over £10,000 for Go MAD at a sponsored cross country in aid of girls’ education and income-generating projects in Tanzania. Stephen Holsgrove, Head Teacher, comments “The grassroots nature of this trip where our pupils work alongside villagers in one of the poorest areas of Tanzania really

enables them to gain a greater understanding of the challenges of life in a developing world country. It is one of the best educational initiatives we have ever undertaken and each one of us would jump at the chance to go back. Pupils return from the trip changed: more mature and more determined to make the most of their education.”

FAMILY HEALTH AND WELLBEING RUNNING A FEVER When is your Child’s Temperature Too High? By Dr Robert Arlt

If your child has a high fever, this doesn’t necessarily mean he or she is seriously ill. Fever is a sign of infection which is usually caused by a virus, but sometimes may be caused by bacteria. Fever is a way in which the body fights infection and

your child’s temperature will return to normal when the infection has completely gone. Bacterial infections are treated with antibiotics, whilst viral infections, which are far more common, do not need antibiotics. Temperature guide (measured with an ear thermometer): Normal body temperature: between 36 and 37.5 Celsius Fever: between 37.5 and 38.5 Celsius High fever: above 38.5 Celsius Hyperthermia: above 41 Celsius How to manage a fever before visiting the doctor: ✱ Dress your child in light clothing – a vest and pants or nappy for a baby will be enough. Cover them with a cotton sheet if they start to shiver. ✱ Keep the room at normal temperature, or cooler, by opening the windows and use a fan to circulate air. (Do not aim the fan directly at your child.) ✱ Give your child plenty of fluids to drink. Giving small amounts frequently is best. Do not worry if your child refuses to eat. ✱ Sponge your child’s body and head with lukewarm water using a face flannel if they are hot, but do not let them shiver. ✱ If you feel the fever is making your child uncomfortable or irritable you can give either paracetamol or ibuprofen.

Consult your doctor if: ✱ you are at all concerned ✱ your child’s fever continues for more than three days ✱ your child develops a rash ✱ your child does not respond to paracetamol or ibuprofen

PLEDGE TO RAISE A GRAND FOR BRAIN TUMOUR RESEARCH! By Linda Stone, Editor

Did you know that brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer? Yet brain tumour research receives just 1% of the national spend on cancer research. The blood-brain barrier stops most standard cancer drugs from treating brain tumours, making them more difficult to combat. Research into the blood-brain barrier is being led by Professor Geoff Pilkington, lead scientist at one of Brain Tumour Research’s Centres of Excellence. Professor Pilkington is an international expert on brain tumours and a pioneer in blood-brain barrier research, having created the world’s first ‘all-human’ blood-brain barrier model. Knowing that the animal model of the blood-brain barrier did not directly relate to the human version, Professor Pilkington has created a unique all-human version using only human brain cells, human brain glioma (tumour) cells and human serum. This blood-brain barrier model is being used by Professor Pilkington’s group and other researchers for live cell imaging

and to provide a basis for the investigation of the features of invading tumour cells. Revealing the precise mechanisms of tumour cells’ invasive behaviour is essential to the development of successful new therapies for this most devastating of diseases. Brain Tumour Research has also launched the Grand Challenge, a unique fundraising partnership with the Dr Hadwen Trust. The aim is to jointly raise 180,000 to fund a three year research project into the blood-brain barrier. You can help by Pledging to Raise a Grand (£1,000) in whatever way you like, to help fund blood-brain barrier research. An annual nasal spray flu vaccine is now available on the NHS for children ages 2, 3 and 4 years old, plus children in school years 1 and 2. Over time, as the programme rolls out, potentially all children between the ages of 2 and 16 will be offered vaccination against flu each year with the nasal spray. The Nasal Spray Flu Vaccine The flu vaccine for children is given as a single dose of nasal spray squirted up each nostril. It is needle-free, quick and painless (a big advantage for children) and is more effective than the injected flu vaccine. The nasal spray flu vaccine is available also for children ages 2 to 17 who are “at risk” from flu, such as children with long-term health conditions. Some of these children will be offered two doses of the vaccine.

Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond

Preventing the Long Term Effects of Early Life Stress in Families By Julia Lidderdale

If you are thinking about having a child you may find yourself becoming anxious or curious about a number of things. These may include becoming pregnant, being pregnant, having a good birth plan, giving birth, recovering from birth, and coping with and enjoying your baby. Don’t worry, help is at hand - you simply need to talk to the right professional. Firstly, research shows that if you are stressed you are less likely to conceive in the first place. Once you have conceived, reducing stress in and around pregnancy is vital. Being anxious, worrying or feeling stressed can increase cortisol levels in the body which can increase blood pressure. Cortisol can contribute to mood changes in the mother and can also pass through the placenta and result in higher levels of stress in the fetus; this may cause mood disorders in the baby in later life and can also result in a smaller baby and/or an earlier birth. This means that if you are feeling stressed

and worried, it is very important to talk to a professional about it. It is essential that even mild depression and low mood during pregnancy are treated efficiently and appropriately as an adverse environment in the womb caused by anxiety, depression, abuse or bereavement may harm the growing baby. Once the baby is born, a depressed mother or father will have a huge impact on his or her well-being and the way he or she is parented. Mental health issues present problems for the wider family too, not just the children and siblings of a depressed parent. We know that women who have or develop mental health problems may also be at risk of physical problems which in a very small number of cases can have a serious impact on how a woman cares for herself and her children, and may even lead to neglect and harm to the child. The message is simple, your mental health is as important as your physical and social health. Do something about your own anxiety and depression now to prevent inherited mental health and physical health disorders passing down throughout the generations in your family. So who should you talk to? Your GP is a good place to start. Alternatively, you can talk to your Health Visitor or Midwife or refer yourself directly to your local IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) service at the West Middlesex Hospital, where the perinatal mental health and wellbeing team, including midwives, obstetricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, counsellors and nurses, are all trained to help. Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond

Second Time Around By Tina Perridge

Are you expecting a second baby? If so, perhaps you are wondering about how the birth of your second child might differ from that of your first? Maybe your first birth was not quite what you had in mind and you would like a more positive experience this time? Or possibly you had a fairly straightforward birth and are wondering whether a home birth might be right for you the second time? Whatever your circumstances, the support of a private or independent midwife will help you identify how you’d like your second birth to be and enable you to achieve it. Many women find that the birth of their first baby is challenging - a few would even say they were traumatised. First births are often characterised by a long and tiring pre-labour during which women can become exhausted and demoralised. This labour period can also extend across the shifts of a number of midwives. These factors, coupled with the fact that actual labour the first time round is also more likely to involve interventions, sometimes leaves a mother feeling that her birth was not quite the

experience for which she was hoping or simply that she just wasn’t listened to or respected. The good news is that second births are almost universally easier. Your body is somewhat accustomed to the birthing process, has done a lot of the initial hard work and swings into action with a little less effort! However, for some women, this can be difficult to believe and they feel very fearful and anxious about their second birth experience. A private or independent midwife understands this and during regular ante-natal visits at home can help to re-build

Fully insured care from your own dedicated midwife

a mother’s confidence by listening to and acknowledging her anxieties, and helping to allay them. This midwife will get to know a mother well and be at her side throughout labour and birth, reminding her that she CAN do this amazing thing. She will also visit a mother frequently post-natally to ensure that she recovers well and has a smooth, trouble-free time to enjoy her new baby. If you had a straightforward birth first time around, you are one of the women for whom a home birth or birth centre is

extra

now the recommended choice as it is just as safe as birth in an obstetric unit but with much better outcomes for mother and baby. With the help of a good Home Birth team at your local hospital, planning a home birth is a wonderful process. Unfortunately though, some women find that they only get referred to this team at 36 weeks, which doesn’t leave them long to establish a relationship with the midwife who will attend their birth. It’s possible that they may also be told that their midwife could be one of a number of midwives or even that a midwife is not guaranteed! Obviously, this feels unsatisfactory to some women. Having a baby at home means that a mother is inviting a midwife into her home at a time when she may feel most vulnerable. Knowing that midwife well before labour is really important in building trust and understanding between mother and midwife. A mother needs to know that her midwife will be experienced, will use that experience to support her as she gives birth to her baby and will know when to offer advice and when to be unobtrusive. A private or independent midwife can be on board early in a pregnancy, with plenty of time to develop a strong relationship with a mother. So, if you are pregnant, have a think now about the kind of support you need to make your second experience of birth just what you’d like it to be. It IS possible!

Why Choose Multi-Sports for your Child? By Kathy Bees, ACMA, CGMA

Professional sport has never been more dynamic and competitive, and the London Olympics in 2012 highlighted the importance of the next generation of sports stars learning multi-skills and having a variety of strengths to improve their development and abilities. Multi-sports classes offer children the opportunity to experience a variety of sports and learn to handle different sports equipment, in one all-inclusive weekly class. The concept is based on the idea that children under 6 years are too young to truly know what sport they love, so need to be able to try out as many different sports as possible. To encourage the next generation to lead healthy, active lifestyles, they need to be active from an early age and their involvement is more likely to be ongoing if they are involved in active play or a structured, fun activity they truly enjoy. Multi-sports training supports children in developing a solid foundation and dynamic

sports across the areas of ball sports, racket and bat sports and athletics. These include basketball, football, rugby and Australian Football (AFL), tennis, hockey (Uni-hoc and Street Hockey), cricket and T-Ball, with athletics encompassing fundamental movement skills. The Ready Steady Go Kids programme encourages parents to get involved too. In the 2 to 3 age group, parents are required to participate in the session with their child. A child’s confidence and independence will grow over time and soon they will indicate that they no longer need parental involvement. Older children love nothing more than to show off their skills or to have their parents and carers help them play sports – after all, you are their best friends in the early years! They also feel safe knowing someone they trust is present at the class and that you are there if they need you.

Kathy Bees is the Director of Ready Steady Go Kids, a hugely successful multi-sports programme for children ages 2 to 7 that launched in 2013. Classes are held in Kingston, Shepperton, Staines and Ashford. For further information, see listing on page 35 and visit www.rsgk.co.uk

skill set to master their chosen sports down the track and guides them towards the sports they love best. In a good multi-sports programme there is a natural development of the foundation skills: motor skills, co-ordination, balance and core strength, all necessary to play a varied choice of sports. This helps to avoid injuries that can sometimes occur from specialising in a single sport early on. The most challenging aspect of a multi-sports programme is overcoming a child’s natural fear of change. This can be achieved within the familiar routine of a structured class and in these circumstances changing sports soon becomes an exciting opportunity to try something new. Knowing the class routine, teachers and other participants makes children comfortable, confident and more open to learning. Small class numbers help children feel like they are part of a team. How to Develop the Musicality of your Child

Did you know that the ear of the foetus is the first organ to fully develop in the womb? This means babies can take comfort in the sound of their mother’s voice just 11 weeks after conception. All children are born with instinctive musicality but to fulfil their musical potential, children need encouragement in the early years and exposure to music, or their innate music aptitude diminishes. Early exposure to singing, listening to and playing music can also sharpen up a whole range of new skills in a young baby. Familiarity with language and numeracy flourish as a result of action songs and rhymes; fine motor skills are refined through playing and holding percussion instruments and awareness of space and of one another is developed through movement. When we move and sing at the same time we engage nearly all of our brain, enabling us to translate and store new information very efficiently. Children who grow up listening to music develop strong, neurological music-related connections. Some of these music pathways actually affect the way they think. So music classes are a great way of developing your baby’s brain and skills, as well as developing innate musicality. The classes should be age-appropriate, as the needs of a baby and a toddler are very different, and mix singing, movement and the chance for babies to make their own sounds using instruments. Pre-schoolers benefit from music classes that move on to the next level, perhaps teaching notation so a child can learn to read a musical score. From here the next step for your child is learning an instrument and you don’t need to wait until he or she reaches school age. Guildhall School of Music & Drama graduate, Angie Coates, who founded music franchise Monkey Music offers some useful tips for developing musicality in toddlers.  As well as humming, use different sounds to make tunes, this way your child hears single syllable and vowel sounds …ba ba baa baba ba, ma ma maaaa, dada da daaa!  Punctuate your day with familiar tunes and rhymes so that your youngster associates a happy routine with positive musical sounds. For example, sing a ‘getting up and getting dressed song’ and a ‘getting ready for bed song.’ This allows your child to hear your voice, his or her favourite sound of all!  Dance and sing whenever you can! Don’t forget that brain development is only a secondary reason for your child to create, learn about and play music. The primary reason is that it is extremely rewarding, lots of fun and January-February 2016

Storytelling Through Dance Brooks Dance Academy in Surbiton By Olivia Malaure

Letting Loose at Diddi Dance!

By Olivia Malaure

Diddi Dance classes already run all over the Richmond borough in Twickenham, Teddington, St Margarets, Hampton and Isleworth. From January, proprietor of this award-winning franchise, Mona Zaharia, is adding Richmond to her list of venues. Diddi Dance is a dance programme for children ages 18 months to 5 years that explores a new style of dance every term. From jive to bollywood, sixteen different styles of dance are explored to a soundtrack which is tailored to each class. This term kicks off with hip hop. Kids can get their bodies popping and shaking, using props like bells, scarves and maracas. Mona Zaharia has an energy and joie de vivre that is contagious! Local mum Tracey Howard has been attending Diddi Dance in Twickenham

for the past 18 months with her daughter Holly. “Holly loves Mona!” Tracey reports.”Her classes are engaging, fun and she captures the imagination of the class with her enthusiasm.” Diddi Dance is a dynamic, carefully planned 45 minute class which has been known to suit children as young as 15 months. “Recently I was surprised by a 15 month child, who I thought might be too young, but she loves the class! She listens beautifully and has learned to wait for her turn” says Mona. Mona, who has travelled the world as a professional dancer, inspires parents AND children to let lose.“Everyone can enjoy dance” says Mona.“It doesn’t matter what your background is or who you are.” A FREE TRIAL is available. Classes are also available in Kingston, Sunbury and Walton. For further details on these, see page 29

For further information, see listing on page 33 and visit www.diddidance.com

Brooks Dance Academy is a ballet school that offers more than the opportunity for children to dance. The recent re-location of its classes to the Berrylands Pub in Surbiton means parents can mix ballet and brioche on a Saturday morning, with their little ones dancing whilst they enjoy coffee and brunch. With a small play area for children, ample parking and Berrylands train station close by, it’s an ideal, stress free Saturday morning outing for everyone! In the light, airy function room, children as young as 2.5 are taking their first steps in Petite Pointes ballet classes, a journey that will take them towards their first Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) exams at age 5. Creative Director, Laura Brooks says “We recently took our dancers to the RAD headquarters for their exams. The children were so

happy to be going and came back even happier!” A Petite Pointes dance class is based on traditional stories with children exploring the text and rhythm of language through music, props and movement. As well as discovering a passion for dance, pupils work on skills to enhance core areas of learning, including literacy and numeracy. Every story has a thoughtful, classically inspired playlist which complements the theme. “Stories by author Julia Donaldson are a favourite” says Laura, who is also a qualified primary school teacher. “The repetitive patterns Donaldson uses in her texts translate excellently into dance.” Classes run on Saturday mornings between 9.15am to 12pm, with children grouped according to age. A FREE TRIAL is offered.

Popping, Locking, Waving and Tuting! Elizabeth James Dance Academy in Richmond By Olivia Malaure

These are just some of the new styles both boys and girls are exploring at the latest street dance classes at Elizabeth James Dance Academy in Richmond. Principal Suze Bailey has always been passionate about encouraging boys to dance and reports “It’s a dream come true. In most of our street dance classes we have as many boys attending as girls!”

The Monday classes run at the same time as the ballet classes, ideal scheduling for parents with boys and girls with different dance preferences, and, with a maximum of ten children in each street dance class, pupils get plenty of attention from their expert class teacher, Kimberley. The pace of street dance is faster than ballet and this makes it a great physical activity that both boys and girls can enjoy indoors. Each week the class focuses on a different skill, developing strength, co-ordination and musical response as the children work towards new routines, and are also given the

chance to showcase their own moves. Street dance also teaches the value and skills of teamwork. ‘’The classes are really social and interactive” says Suze, who is buzzing with excitement about the vibrant atmosphere the addition of street dance classes to her curriculum has created. “I can see parents watching the classes resisting the urge to join in!” At the Elizabeth James Dance Academy, children begin ballet as young as 18 months with the Melody Bear Little Feet programme, and can add street dance to their repertoire from age 3 onwards. Classes are held in Richmond Hill, Kew and East Twickenham.

Breaking Records and Winning Accolades at Step On Stage!

By Olivia Malaure

From play writing to piano, there is no area of performing arts in which Step on Stage is not involved. Last year, its production of the musical Oliver! won three performance awards and its dancers participated in the Guinness Book of Records Tapathon, in which a whopping 7526 tap dancers tapped toes together! The success of the academy is fuelled by the energy and vision of Principal Emma Tinniswood, a performer, a parent and a teacher who has followed her passion to create a school that offers a professional curriculum and expertly delivers classes in dance, singing, instrumental music, acting, playwriting and musical theatre. With classes for children ages 2 to 21 in Twickenham, Hampton Hill, St Margaret’s, Richmond and Sunbury,

Step On Stage continually introduces new classes and concepts. Most recently, a new dance class has been launched in St Margarets for children age 3+. Story Adventures combines popular dance styles including ballet, tap and modern, all in one energy-packed, fun class. Local father, Pat Morgan, has a daughter who takes classes in drama, dance and piano. “It’s her number one activity” says Pat. “She’s been so inspired by the teaching at Step on Stage that she currently wishes to pursue a career as a dance teacher! Step on Stage receives excellent results in their LAMDA drama and RAD dance exams” says Pat. Step on Stage is currently taking bookings for 2016 holiday camps. Places are limited and there are Early Bird discounts! For further information, see page 34 and visit www.steponstageacademy.co.uk

Winter Wonders at Watermans!

LOCAL THEATRE GUIDE

By Linda Stone, Editor

So Christmas and the New Year are over and January looms emptily ahead…but don’t despair! There’s plenty of drama, fun, laughter and good cheer to be had during Watermans’ winter children’s theatre season. Perfect for whiling away those long, dark Sunday afternoons! Opening the season on 17 January is Circles in the Sand for children ages 0 to 3. Brought to the stage by the producers of last year’s incredibly popular production, Curious, this lovely piece of interactive theatre is the perfect introduction to theatre for little ones. It’s an intimate, imaginative and captivating play without words which explores sand in new and exciting ways, using rhythms and music drawn from around the world. Two unmissable fairy tale classics follow on Sunday, 24 January and Sunday, 31 January, with new show, Rumpelstiltskin for ages 3 to 8 from the famous

Norwich Puppet Theatre and a quirky and fun Three Billy Goats Gruff for ages 3 to 6 from Garlic Theatre. Before you know it, the evenings will be getting longer again and then half term will be upon us. This February, take the chance to roll up to Watermans for Circus Week, running during half term. That week, slapstick comedy and circus feats galore punctuate The Party, a show about a birthday party which features four superb circus performances. This is ‘a must’ for adults and kids alike! Workshops and mini-performances, all on the circus theme, will take place around the Watermans building throughout the half term week and offer an entertaining way of passing a few hours. If you haven’t done so already, make sure you pay a visit to the new-look Watermans café too. It’s bright, spacious and vibrant – and now serves kids lunchboxes too, so no need to worry about packing those sandwiches!
