TACKLING OVER-EATING by Jane Ogden
At its simplest, we eat because we LIKE to eat, because OTHERS eat, and because food is THERE. So, in a world in which we are taught to like unhealthy foods (“eat your vegetables and you can have cake”), in which everyone around us eats unhealthily (“I’m tired, I’ll have some chocolate to give me a boost”) and in which the foods available are becoming unhealthier (“I’ll have even more chocolate as they now sell it in a double sized bar”), it’s not surprising that children are getting fatter. We don’t want our children to be fat, but we REALLY don’t want them to become anxious around food and develop an eating disorder either. So what can parents do to tackle overeating and overweight without making food into a problem? Here are some tips: Decide if You Need to Worry Don’t say “you’re getting fat, you need to do something about it.” First, decide if your child really is overweight. Find a casual way to put them on scales (at the shops, at a friend’s house – make it fun!) and then a few days later measure their height at home – tell them you think they have grown. Then calculate your child’s BMI. You can use http://www.nhs.uk/Tools/pages/ Healthyweightcalculator.aspx to do this. Don’t Put Your Child on a Diet Help them lose weight without them really realising you are doing anything. Be subtle,
casual, even manipulative if you have to be! Encourage Your Child to Be More Active Throw them into the garden with a skipping rope or a ball. Have active weekends and go for a swim or a family bike ride or walk; take your kids to the local park after school; encourage them to join clubs and show them that you like being active as well. Say “go in the garden and let off some steam” when they are feeling cross or upset, rather than putting them in front of the television with a biscuit. Be a Good Role Model We are the main role models for our children, even though they may act as if we are not. Eat healthily, eat meals, don’t snack and don’t skip meals. Have seconds if you are hungry but not if you just feel like it. We live in a world where people are getting fatter and being overweight has become the norm. If you are overweight, don’t let your child think that this is normal and DON’T encourage them to think that being overweight runs in your family and that there’s nothing you can do about it. Don’t moan to your child about your weight but similarly don’t celebrate it. Similarly, if they are overweight, don’t criticise them for it but don’t encourage them to make excuses for it or be proud of it either. Change Their Environment You have the car and the money and you do the shopping and the cooking. So don’t buy fizzy drinks, crisps or biscuits if you don’t want your children to eat them and cook healthy meals without puddings. Serve decent portions, but don’t overload your child’s plate with their first serving. They can ask for more if they want it.

Plan Meals If there is a set time for meals and children know that at these times they will be fed, living with hunger and waiting for the next meal becomes easier. So decide to eat at a set time whenever possible, tell your children when and what you are having for dinner and ask them to wait if they are hungry, saying “it is much nicer to be hungry at dinner time. You’ll enjoy it more.” Cook Filling Meals Give your kids meals with plenty of fruit and vegetables and brown carbohydrates (rice, pasta, bread, potatoes), eat at the table, eat as a family and encourage them to see meals as a social activity and family event, not just a series of snacks. Get a Fruit Bowl Get a fruit bowl, fill it with grapes, satsumas, plums, nectarines and small apples, so if your kids have to snack they can do so healthily. Food can become an area of conflict for families and feeling overweight can lead to a lifetime of worry and upset. So if your child IS overweight AND overeats AND you are sure this is more than just a stage, DO act. To reiterate though, do be subtle, sneaky and casual to help them eat a healthier diet and be more active, WITHOUT making food a problem for the rest of their lives.

FAMILY HEALTH AND WELLBEING THE DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES OF YOUR CHILD’S FIRST YEAR
✿
By Dr Tobias Odenwald
Watching a baby develop is fascinating for most parents, carers and health care professionals, who, with every visit, see babies grow and gain in weight, as well as acquiring new skills. Important Developmental Milestones Whilst in the past, babies (apart from constantly wanting to feed) were considered relatively passive, today we know that they are very curious and actively explore their surroundings, right from the start. In doing so, their different areas of development impact each other: improving vision in the first weeks, for example, allows a baby to make better eye contact, to start smiling when seeing familiar faces and to recognise and turn to their parents.
Good hearing is essential to respond to sounds, initially mainly by turning towards the source, but soon also by vocal imitation. This starts as early as 2 to 5 months and finally leads to the first comprehensible words at around 12 months of age. Each step in a baby’s gross motor development has an enormous impact on their perspective and possibilities: sitting up literally changes the baby’s view of the world, and together with the ability to move around enables a little one to change their position and get close to the toys they see. As fine motor and co-ordination skills improve, babies can grab objects with their hands and explore them closely by bringing them in front of their eyes (and putting them in their mouths).

The different areas of development are highly interdependent and it is therefore not sufficient to focus on when your baby achieves single specific skills e.g. the date when a child started walking or talking. It is also important to consider that every child is unique and will not develop at the exact same pace as any other child. However, you should consult your doctor or health visitor if your baby: ✿ Does not make eye contract ✿ Does not react to sound ✿ Does not reach and grab objects

PARENTING
How Role Models Can Hold Us Back By Alison Banks
How many times have you found yourself saying to yourself “I can’t believe I’ve just said that. I sound just like my mum!” We are profoundly influenced by our upbringing. We have judged it, identified the mistakes we think our parents made and are determined not to repeat them
with our children. Unfortunately though, despite our resolve, we somehow can’t seem to help re-enacting these behaviours anyway, even if only occasionally. When this happens, we inevitably feel guilty. When we return to our parental home as adults, we quickly fall back into our
childhood roles and patterns and find that the things we found difficult then, are equally difficult now. Perhaps our parents were brought up believing that children should be seen and not heard. Or maybe they find it difficult to express their emotions. Whilst the behaviours they demonstrate may be understandable, they continue to have an impact upon us even as adults. It seems impossible to break through the layers of baggage that exist between us and our parents and change the dynamics. We have learned how important it is to express our emotions and to encourage our children to acknowledge how they feel. In other words, the complete opposite behaviours to those we may experience in the homes of our parents. This is difficult for us, but it must be equally confronting for our parents to be faced with this totally different style of parenting. It would certainly be wonderful if our parents would adapt to our expressive emotional style in order that we can enjoy with them the intimacy that we now have in many of our other adult relationships. However, in trying to encourage this we may simply find ourselves constantly frustrated when our attempts to tell our parents how we really feel or get closer to them emotionally are unsuccessful. Eventually, we may give up altogether. But there is another way.
extra
Changing the pattern of behaviour in long-term relationships isn’t easy, because existing behaviours have built strong neural pathways in our brains over the years we have spent experiencing life in certain ways. So, picking a positive role model can help guide you towards different behaviours. For example, you may have a friend who has an easy, emotionally expressive relationship with their parents. Watch how your friend behaves towards their parents and next time you go home, try to model these behaviours. You may find that this helps you shift the whole dynamic of the relationship with your own parents. Model for your parents the emotional openness that they didn’t learn in their childhoods. In other words, when you react to the way your parents behave, don’t automatically react in the way you did when you were a child. Bring your best adult self instead. Even the worst, addicted, self-obsessed parent DOES love their child to the best of their ability, even if it doesn’t seem like it. They simply may not be able to make it through the fog of their own problems to be available to their children. If they had understood how to be open, they would have shared this with their children. Now you are a parent, you can show them – not tell them – how to do it!

PARENTING
Laying Down The Guilt By Katharine Hill Over the years, thousands of parents have shared with me their joys, fears, hopes and aspirations for their children. Time and time again they confide this: they feel guilty. These are just ordinary parents who are tired – not of parenting but of being told they are rubbish at it. Whether it’s potty training, enforcing bedtimes, or encouraging their child’s reading, as one mum put it “Every time I hear an expert give a foolproof way to deal with the kids, I find that mine are an exception to the rule!” And what creeps in then? Guilt. I have a secret to share with you. When it comes to your own kids, there are no experts – the book and magazine writers and those that appear on television, they are just trying to get their own kids through the best they can. So have confidence in your own parenting. Nobody knows or loves your child like you. So listen to advice, try it, but if it doesn’t work, do something else. There is no one way to be a perfect parent – but there are a hundred ways to be a great parent. Nobody sums up this issue of guilt better than a mum who wrote in to Care for the Family:
“Mother guilt is attached to the umbilical cord, but it stays with you for life. You feel guilty about what you do and guilty about what you don’t do. Guilty when you leave them and guilty when you pick them up. Guilty about what they eat, what they don’t eat and even what they might eat. The guilt gets you at night, on the train, standing in the school playground and especially when you’ve left them to have a break. What mothers need is a jury of twelve good mothers and true to stand up and say “Not guilty m’lud.” The time when I most needed to hear that ‘not guilty’ verdict was on a memorable trip to London when our children were 3, 5, 7 and 9. We had seen the sights, negotiated the Underground, and arrived back at Wandsworth station at five o’clock, just as it was getting dark. The two eldest began to argue. Charlotte thought George had dog poo on his shoe and didn’t want to sit next to him. I was anxious to get back and irritated with their bickering. I got into the passenger seat and uttered September 2015
the immortal words “If you can’t behave you’ll have to walk home.” The argument subsided and we got in the car and set off. We had been driving for about ten minutes when George said “Where’s Charlotte?” I still remember the feeling of utter panic as I looked round and realised that she wasn’t in the car. We had driven off without her, leaving her behind, at just 7 years old, in the middle of London. The next thirty minutes were the longest of my life. We did a sudden u-turn across rush hour traffic and headed back to the station. She wasn’t where we had left her. I remember jumping out of the car and blindly running up and down the roads searching for a sight of her blonde curls and red hoodie. After what seemed an eternity we found her, walking up and down the next street with no idea where she (or we) were. She had thought the car was facing up the road, and, miffed with her brother, had stormed off, thinking that we would pick her up as we drove by. Unfortunately the car was facing in the opposite direction. I have made many mistakes as a mum but that was probably the one that still overwhelms me with guilt whenever I think about it. When we feel we have really messed up, the guilt can be hard to bear. Almost worse can be the guilt we feel when comparing ourselves to ‘perfect’ parents - the mums and dads who encourage other parents to follow their example because they really DO have three
perfect children. They save their pocket money for study-guides, always do their homework on time, and offer to help with the washing-up. I have the following advice for such parents:

INTERVIEWING A POTENTIAL NANNY FOR YOUR CHILD By Sarah Cozens
The daunting moment has arrived when you need to find childcare for your most precious creations! Firstly, do always use a nanny agency which guarantees to ensure that all the proper background checks have been carried out and will help you not only shortlist the nannies you would like to meet, but also advise
you on the interview process. Here are my top interview tips: ● Decide if you would like your children present for the interview or if you would prefer an evening interview once they are tucked up in bed. ● Watch to see if the nanny removes her shoes, without being asked, when she comes into the house! I personally feel
this is a good start and shows the candidate respects the household they are entering. ● Describe the position, responsibilities and duties, particularly if you expect more than nursery duties, for instance, cooking family meals or weekly shopping. ● Discuss your approach to discipline and any methods you’d like your nanny to follow. ● Describe the children and their routine and outline any medical or dietary issues that they may have. ● Ask why the nanny candidate chose to go into childcare. Someone with a passion for caring for children is a MUST and this should shine through.
extra
Sarah Cozens owns and runs Nutkin Nannies, a nanny agency based in Chertsey, which sources permanent and temporary live-in and live-out, day, maternity and night nannies for local families. For further information on how to interview a nanny and for help selecting one, visit www.nutkinnannies.co.uk
AFFORDABLE NANNY OPTIONS! Whilst employing a nanny may historically have been viewed as an expensive childcare option, it no longer has to break the bank. An after-school nanny is a great solution for parents of school age children who only require childcare for a limited number of out-of-school hours. The obvious benefit is that you only pay the nanny for the hours that they are actually looking after your children. This is particularly cost effective if you have more than one child. Many after-school nannies are also keen to work longer or even full time during school holidays so you won’t be left struggling for childcare.
To widen the pool of nannies fitting your requirements, you could also consider a nanny with her own children (NWOC). Such nannies often seek part time roles and also often have slightly lower salary expectations. Although employing a nanny who will bring their own child to work may evoke mixed reactions, the benefits can be more than just financial. Being a parent, a NWOC is likely to have a better understanding of your needs and your child’s social development is also likely to benefit from the added interaction. Nanny sharing also cuts the cost of childcare, although finding a family that is a good fit can take time. A nanny share often sees two

● Ask what qualities and assets the candidate could bring to the job and what they think are the best and worst bits about nannying. Their answers may be very revealing. ● Try to avoid back-to-back interviews. Whilst this may seem practical and less disruptive of your evenings, it can become tiring and unless you are taking notes all the way through it can be difficult to remember each candidate’s responses. ● Try to keep the interview fairly informal whilst still getting the information you need. You can learn a lot from a person through a friendly chat.

families whose children are either of similar ages or attending the same school being looked after by a single nanny, often in alternating homes. Alternatively, it may be possible to find a family that requires support at different times to yourself in which case you can both use the same nanny in your own homes. If nanny sharing isn’t practical and your employer offers a

childcare voucher scheme, remember that vouchers can be used towards the cost of an Ofsted-registered nanny. Many nannies will already be registered or willing to obtain registration. If you are looking for a nanny option that won’t cost you a fortune, a good nanny agency can give you tailored advice and support.

showed no signs of this when she started at Windsor, perhaps because she was already familiar with both Annabelle and her key worker who had visited us at home the week before. When we moved to Twickenham, my daughter was coming up to three and I needed to find her a pre-school. There were a number of local options, and, determined to find the one that would most suit Ruby, I visited most of them. Many went on to a list of possibles, but none of them rang a resounding “yes” - until I visited Windsor Kindergarten. The setting in St Margarets is large, with a fabulous outdoor area, an enthusiastic buzz of children’s voices and lots of happy smiles. All the children seemed engaged and contented. However, it was my meeting with the Manager that sold it. She immediately struck me as the sort of person that understood exactly how to stimulate little children. Other nurseries had slightly bored me with talk about safeguarding
and paperwork evidencing how they monitored the progress of the children; Annabelle told me about the way in which her team came up with daily activity ideas for the little ones. They were the sort of things that sounded fun and that I knew my daughter wouldn’t do at home like rolling the wheels of different sizes of toy cars in paint and running them over paper. Whilst other nurseries explained their staff ratios, Annabelle told me that, at Windsor, the owner and many of the staff had known each other since their own children were small and considered Windsor “a family.” She spoke with such passion, assurance and creativity that I knew Windsor was the place for Ruby. I wasn’t disappointed. As a child, I suffered terrible separation anxiety and abandoned pre-school because, in those days, nobody really knew how to deal with me. My daughter

help her forget her distress, and on more than one occasion picked her up to give her a cuddle when I left. We had enrolled Ruby at the second Windsor setting in Church Street, Twickenham as it was closer to home and offered smaller afternoon sessions which I felt would suit her better. It wasn’t long before she was attending some mornings too with a larger group of children. Her confidence soared. Over time, I learned that Windsor Kindergarten had been established in Twickenham for 22 years and that Sangeeta Gardiner, the proprietor of both settings, is an experienced teacher, and also a qualified Early Years Ofsted Inspector. I believe this is reflected in the exceptional quality of the managers and staff that work at the nursery who really pride themselves on forming close relationship with the children and their families. I was unfailingly impressed by Windsor’s skill in recognising and nurturing my daughter’s interests and abilities. She loves to dance and there were many occasions when I would come to pick her up and discover that her key worker had switched on some music outside purely so she could dance to it. My husband summed it up when he recently reminisced “I really miss picking Ruby up from Windsor. She was always so happy there.”

DID CHILDCARE JUST GET CHEAPER? By Sarah-Jane Butler
Returning to work and sourcing high quality, affordable childcare can be a minefield for many parents. In a significant shake up to the current system, David Cameron recently announced plans for the 15 hours a week of free early education or childcare available for each pre-school child to be doubled. This means that from September 2017 all children ages 3 and 4 with working parents will be entitled to 30 hours of free childcare per eligible child each week. The Government has claimed that 600,000 average working families with pre-school age children will benefit, with each family saving up to £5,000 per year (including the £2,500 they can already save from the existing free childcare offers.) On paper, this sounds like an excellent solution to the rising costs of childcare and a real incentive for parents to return to work. But will the 30 hours of ‘free’ childcare really be free? Currently, the 15 ‘free’ hours of childcare are funded by the nursery education grant from local authorities, and although grant rates differ, the average works out about £3.80 per child per hour. However, the Pre-School Learning Alliance says grants for the existing 15 hours fall, on average, 20% short of the true cost of providing nursery places. As a result, nurseries in the independent and voluntary sector often turn to parents to make up the shortfall in ‘top up fees.’ This situation is unlikely to improve in the near future. The government has stated that it will roll out the new entitlement
in ‘certain areas’ from September 2016, with full implementation from September 2017. However, unless the historic underfunding problems are addressed, many parents are quite rightly asking how implementation can take place without either leading to even higher childcare costs or risking the sustainability of the nurseries and childcare providers altogether. To address financial concerns, the government has issued a ‘call for evidence’ to inform a formal review into childcare funding. The results of this were not available at the time of publication. However, parents and childcare
providers alike will be very keen to see who exactly will be footing the bill for any funding shortfall. For those wondering about the definition of ‘working parents,’ clarification has already been provided. The 30 free hours will be available to households where all parents work for at least 8 hours a week at the minimum wage, including lone

parents. This is likely to include parents in education, training, voluntary work or additional work experience and the entitlement will apply to working grandparent carers. The details of how the entitlement will apply to those working on zero-hours contracts, term-time only contracts, or to parents of disabled children needing additional support are yet to be confirmed. Some might say that The Childcare Bill should be more focussed on ensuring children (especially those in more deprived areas) have access to high quality childcare, rather than simply increasing the free entitlement. This is particularly significant given recent IFS research which showed that ‘the current approach is not delivering long run gains in children’s cognitive development.’ It will therefore be interesting to see whether the ‘uplift’ in funding will also cover the cost of enhancing the skills and capacity of the workforce to provide high quality care and learning, as well as the cost of further hours. The Childcare Bill is currently going through Parliament with the first report due in October 2015. So ‘watch this space’ to see how the new policy will unfold over the current months, and whether the Government investment will have significant gains to children, parents and the economy in the long term.

KINGSTON GRAMMAR SCHOOL STUDENT INTERVIEWS HEAD OF NASA! Omid Alavi, currently in the second year at Kingston Grammar School, was one of the lucky few recently selected to interview Charles Bolden, the Head of NASA (and “an actual astronaut”) live on Sky TV. Omid was one of eight children ages 11 to 13 selected to make up the Hotseat, a collaboration between Sky News and First News, designed to encourage the next generation to explore “infinity and beyond” (to quote another famous astronaut). The questions the panel asked ranged from Star Wars vs Star Trek to scariest moment in
space. Omid was given the honour of asking the first question, about Mr Bolden’s responsibility as a commander to his crew. He then followed this up with a question on NASA and aviation pollution, the answer to which really gave an insight into the projects NASA is undertaking to change engine fuels and minimise pollution levels.

PARENTING WORKSHOPS OPEN TO ALL AT ATHELSTAN HOUSE SCHOOL! This academic year sees Athelstan House School in Hampton launch a series of parent workshops that will be open to all. The workshops will look at best practice in the teaching of early reading and maths skills, with a focus on equipping parents to help their children at home. Both Phonics and Maths are taught very differently nowadays and understanding the methodology that underpins current teaching practice can be very empowering for parents. Deputy Jill Collins explains “We have been offering workshops to our parents
for a number of years and the feedback has always been extremely positive, so we wanted to offer them to a wider audience. We have the facilities and the expertise, so why not make the most of it?” The first workshop will be held on Thursday 1 October at 1.30pm. ENRICHING EXTRA-CURRICULAR AT STAINES PREPARATORY SCHOOL!
The last academic year at Staines Prep has seen children participating in an abundance of exciting events and activities, many of which have been extra-curricular and all of which have enriched their school lives. Stand-out events were Author of the Month, Book Week and amazing performances at the Poetry Competition, as well as Maths and Science Week, which included exciting science experiments of which even Hogwarts would be envious! The School’s Prep Singers and Choir performed at Carols by Candlelight, the Papa India Memorial Service and cheered elderly residents at a local
Daybreak Centre. Meanwhile, the School’s sports teams actively engaged in Cross Country, Athletics, Cricket, Netball and Rounders and enjoyed competitive matches across the county. The School also hosted its first ever Club Showcase this year - a wonderful and energetic night, showcasing the many talents of children attending the extra-curricular Performing Arts-based clubs at the School.

HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH MATHS EDUCATION FOCUS AUTUMN 2015 Supporting Excellence
By Rob Eastaway
Get ready for a maths test. Don’t worry, it doesn’t involve quadratic equations, and you won’t need a slide rule or even a pencil and paper. You just need to imagine that a 10 year old girl has asked you for help with her homework. Which of the following would you be able to explain to her? ✱ Partitioning ✱ Number Bonds ✱ Multiplication with the grid method ✱ Arrays ✱ Division using chunking You probably found that tough. In fact, I’m prepared to bet that, however good you think you are at maths, you scored very low in that test. Most parents and grandparents score zero, which is a bit worrying given that this terminology is now commonplace in primary schools across the UK. I’ve always been confident in maths, but even I was intimidated by the new teaching methods. When my daughter started primary school, I was annoyed too because I realised that when it came to explaining how to do things, I was stuck with methods that would mean nothing to her. I was reminded of a friend who sat down to help his son with long division, only for the boy to run off to mum screaming “Dad isn’t helping, he’s just confusing me!” So now that I have got to
grips with the new methods and language, what advice can I give you? First of all, relax. Like all jargon, this new language is intimidating, but the methods behind it aren’t actually new at all. One mother, who was terrified about having to learn ‘grid multiplication’ discovered with great relief that it was actually very similar to an improvised method she used herself. Secondly, remember that maths is far more than just

the arithmetic children learn at school. It’s the maths they learn while playing board games and helping with the cooking or shopping, which really gives children a sense of numbers and how they fit in the real world. One day, your kids are playing Monopoly, the next they are looking for the best interest rate deals available, or working out the hidden charges on their mobile phone contract! For those most comfortable with the traditional shorthand methods of long multiplication and division, the good news is that those methods ARE still taught, usually after children have been introduced to the other more intuitive methods. In fact, one of the legacies of Michael Gove’s period as Education Minister is that old-fashioned arithmetic – including knowing times tables up to twelve – is once again knowledge required by all children when they leave primary school. So children will still be expected to do things like ‘borrow one and then pay it back.’ A cautionary tale though. A teacher I met taught subtraction using the traditional method. One day she set a test, which included the calculation 52 take away 16. One boy in the class spotted that you can’t take 6 away from 2,
extra
and he knew that this meant he had to borrow. But where from? He noticed that the date was 24 November, so he decided to borrow 4 from the date and add it on to the 2! Everything on the page now added up correctly, as long as the teacher was prepared to accept that he had managed to go back in time four days! The problem was that Stuart had been taught a mechanical method of arithmetic without any understanding of what it meant. That is why some of the ‘new’ methods, such as grid multiplication, are so useful for many children. They tend to be a bit slower, but they are more visual and children can usually understand them much better than the more efficient ‘black box’ methods that their parents learned. In the end, the most important thing is that your child becomes confident in dealing with numbers. The more they enjoy the maths that they do, the more they will practise, and the better they will get. By the time they are 18, few of them will be using long multiplication or any other written method – they’ll be working things out in their heads or using a calculator, like you do. But they will have gained a deeper understanding of numbers and problem-solving along the way, which will be essential in their adult life.

KING’S HOUSE SCHOOL ENJOYS PRESTIGIOUS VICTORY IN RUGBY!
King’s House School in Richmond recently congratulated its 1st XV which won the U13 Lexus National Schools Rugby Tournament 2015. Led by Captain Ted Johnson, winning was the result of an outstanding team effort with the Head of School leaping for joy at the final whistle in the final!
In its 19th year, the National Schools Rugby Tournament is the most prestigious event in the Prep Schools’ rugby calendar with one hundred and seventy teams from over eighty schools and two and a half thousand boys participating. Entrants qualify via regional tournaments covering the South West, South East, North and Midlands to compete in the finals in March. King’s House is proud that its Sports Ground is one of only six venues in the country selected to host the qualifying rounds.

PUTTING YOUNG MINDS TO WORK AT TWICKENHAM PREP! Year 6 girls and Year 8 boys at Twickenham Preparatory School in Hampton recently took part in Stride’s Putting Young Mind’s to Work course. This programme exposes young people to business skills, fostering a culture of entrepreneurship, building confidence and encouraging innovation and creative problem solving. The children plan, pitch and run their own mini-businesses, experiencing a small slice of business life along the way. The pupils worked in small teams to devise a business to raise money for charity. Given a
deposit to cover initial costs, they then produced a business plan and competed against each other in a Dragons’ Den-style pitch to an invited panel of local business men and women. The finale was the sales event at which pupils, staff and parents had the opportunity to sample the products of the different groups, raising nearly £700 in profit to be donated to charity.

NEWLAND HOUSE SCHOOL DONATES £6000 TO SUPPORT RIDING SESSIONS FOR DISABLED CHILDREN Newland House School in Twickenham encourages pupils to become actively engaged in supporting charitable causes with its Head Boy and Head Girl nominating a local charity to support every year. The amazing total of £6000 was recently presented to nominated organisation The Horse Rangers Association in Hampton for its Riding for Disabled work which provides life-enriching riding sessions for disabled children. This was raised partly by the School’s Parents Association which organised a Bollywood Ball and Raffle, cookery workshops and a St Patrick’s
Day Supper at which parents and staff prepared and cooked a three-course meal for guests. Additionally, pupils at the School took part in a quiz night. In raising funds for a local organisation, children come to understand its work more fully, making their support especially meaningful and tangible.

CERAMIC ART AT HALLIFORD SCHOOL! Boys at Halliford School in Shepperton start designing a piece of ceramics in Year 8 and then go into production in Year 9, with many taking their ceramic work further into GCSE and A Level, where almost all achieve A* grades. The School is especially keen to encourage and bring to fruition the quirky, unique, and personal ideas of each boy, and pupils often make their own moulds, from objects or from their own hand-built pieces. Recently, exploring the potential of using different materials, glassblower Alex Derry helped the School to pioneer the use of kiln-formed glass. The number of pupils taking Art at the School has grown substantially in the past 6 years and it now operates from new facilities. Almost all of those pupils taking A Level Art go on to study art or design in one of its many forms. For further information, visit www.hallifordschool.co.uk September 2015

WHAT NOT TO DO WHEN YOU ARE NEW TO THE SCHOOL RUN 7, fell out with her best friend “I was ready to storm around to her house. Then I realised Ava changed best friends every day. It wasn’t a big deal for her.”
EDUCATION FOCUS AUTUMN 2015 Supporting Excellence
By Liat Hughes-Joshi Your child has just started school and everything is new and challenging. The last thing you need is to fall into one of the many common parent-traps of school life, just because no one warned you about them. Here are some tips from mums and dads of older children about how to avoid common mistakes.
Tackling Other Parents about their Child’s Behaviour Another child has been behaving badly towards your child and your protective instincts are kicking in. DON’T take this up with the other child’s parent. She or he could have a different version of events and, as a parent, it’s very hard not to feel upset and offended if your child is criticised. You don’t want a parental fall-out that will endure long after the kids make up and an awkward few years at the school gate! If the situation seems serious, raise it with the teacher and let them sort things out.
Complaining to the Teacher You take what your child has said as gospel, march into see the teacher, only to fall flat on your (red with embarrassment) face when you discover your little one has got completely the wrong end of the stick. Even the most switched-on, truthful child can mishear or misunderstand. Stay open-minded if you need to raise an issue with your child’s teacher and communicate that you understand that what your child has told you, may NOT be accurate. Sweating the Small Stuff An interest in how your child is doing is healthy but getting overly concerned about the minutiae of what they are learning is less so. As Emma, mum to Jamie, 12, and Lucy, 9, puts it “I realise now that who was reading which books wasn’t anywhere near as important as I thought it was then. As long as your child is progressing and enjoying school, try not to worry.”
Forgetting There Can Be Thirty Kids in a Class At ‘big school,’ you aren’t going to be able to have the daily chat with staff you might have been used to at nursery or with a childminder. There could be thirty children in the class! Sangeeta, mum to Maya, 6, says “there’s an element of ‘no news is good news.’ If your child is struggling or misbehaving, the teacher will tell you. You gradually get used to not knowing so much about what your child is doing.” Being a School Gate Competitor Engaging with the competitive mum in the class guarantees a lose-lose situation. If your child is

ahead of hers, she’ll hate you for it. If hers has one up on yours, you’ll end up inwardly fuming at her smugness. Do not participate in her FBI-style interrogations about your child’s achievements. If all else fails, adopt a vacant look and mutter “the reading scheme – don’t understand it,” or change the subject quickly – the weather, last night’s Strictly - anything but school! Freaking Out about Friendship Fall-Outs Reception children swap friends more quickly than you can ask “who’s your best buddy?” It’s completely normal and bust-ups are quickly forgotten. Provide a shoulder to cry on, offer reassuring advice and arrange playdates with other classmates to build bonds. Cath, recalls how daughter Ava,

Under-Estimating Exhaustion Levels Even little ones who were fine with full-time nursery can have the stuffing knocked out of them when they start school and by home time many Reception kids are exhausted. Alison, mum of Jack, 7, advises “I wanted to catch up with him but he used to be so grouchy. Don’t sign up for any after-school activities initially, have lots of early nights and always have a snack available - he still comes out starving every day.” Not Labelling Everything! There’s a black hole in every primary school into which children’s belongings fall. If you want to get lost items back, label everything! And don’t let your child take their favourite toy ‘show and tell’ as there is a strong chance it will never be seen again.

NATIONALLY ACCLAIMED ARTIST VISITS FALCONS SCHOOL FOR BOYS!
At the end of last term, pupils from Falcons School for Boys in Richmond met the artist behind their recent creative project after inviting her to attend their art exhibition as Guest of Honour. Contemporary mixed media artist, Scarlett Raven, made the special appearance at the School’s spring show. Scarlett,
whose work has already gained the support of celebrity fans such as Orlando Bloom and Take That, talked to students and viewed their art before presenting six awards for stand-out paintings produced by the children from Nursery to Year 8. Four hundred people attended the Falcons Art Exhibition, The Big Draw, to see artwork created by each one of the three hundred and fifty five pupils in the School, aged from 3 to 13. A silent auction for fourteen canvasses also raised just over £4,000 for the Falcons Primary School in Sierra Leone.

In celebration of their new Clive of India play area, the children, parents and staff at the Pre-Prep and Nursery of Claremont Fan Court School in Esher recently took part in a wonderful pageant in which they paraded their bikes, trikes and scooters around the School grounds. Mrs Louise Fox, Head of the Pre-Prep and Nursery School explained “The children creatively decorated their vehicles with a tropical array of birds and animals to recreate the Indian jungle. We also admired a number galleon ships which negotiated the twists and turns of the procession around the School.” The second phase of the play area, the shipwreck, is being
installed during the summer holidays for all the Pre-Prep children to enjoy during this autumn. The new play area will provide exciting and creative playtimes for the children whilst keeping Claremont’s history alive.

THAMES CHRISTIAN COLLEGE PERFORMS A MUSICAL TRIUMPH! Thames Christian College recently performed Crazy for You, the new Gershwin musical, at historic venue The Clapham Grand. This high-energy comedy with music by George and Ira Gershwin was accompanied by a nine piece orchestra and provided a high level of challenge for Thames pupils, with big dance numbers and staged cowboy fights. Oscar, Year 10, who played the lead of Bobby Child says “It is amazing to have this opportunity so young. It has really helped to grow my confidence as I now know that I can achieve far more than I ever imagined.” The show featured the
brilliantly creative choreography of director Rachael Smith to classic Gershwin songs including Slap That Bass and I Got Rhythm. Stephen Holsgrove, Head, Thames Christian College comments “Each year we raise the bar a bit higher with our productions but our pupils continue to accomplish spectacular performances. I am immensely proud of them.”

GENEROUS GIVING AT JACK AND JILL SCHOOL!
The community of the Jack and Jill School in Hampton and Twickenham consistently excels in frequent and generous “giving” and the selection by the School Council of the School’s charities for the year is of special importance. These 6 year old girls request nominations from the parent body, discuss the work of each charity and the reasons for its nomination and then make the final, important selection of two charities to add to the
Shooting Star Chase Children’s Hospice, which is supported on a permanent basis. This year, local charities Momentum and The Eden Dora Trust have benefitted from the efforts of staff, children and members of Friends of Jack and Jill School (FJJS) with the main fund raising event, the May Fair held on Twickenham Green, raising an astounding £20,020, whilst at the same time being a wonderful opportunity to bring the local community together.

The School already enjoys wonderful facilities such as a state-of-the-art theatre, science laboratories and sports amenities, and has now refurbished both the School’s sites. The Mall Pre-Prep, which has been commonly known
as Mall Infants, has been re-developed and enhanced, while the main school site has been renovated from the Entrance Reception onwards. “We are excited about the developments at The Mall which are ready for the start of the new academic year, enabling our boys to work, learn and achieve in a friendly, inspiring and welcoming environment”states Mr David Price, Headmaster.

Following the poppy display at the Tower of London last year, pupils and staff at Tolworth Girls’ School in Kingston, recently took on the task of creating their own area of remembrance in one of the main school corridors. Every student and member of staff was given the opportunity to cut out and write a message on a poppy, after having watched
the story of a British VC winner on video. The project has been a huge success with both students and staff alike, encouraging opportunities for both inspiration and remembrance. “This has been a fantastic way of involving the entire school community in a really meaningful project”commented David Flood, a history teacher at the School.

Until one year ago, he was previously the Head of a boys’ grammar school himself. Back to Stephen’s daughter. One of the key adjustments this straight A student had to make to her new environment was that suddenly, with a smaller class size, she was being asked to contribute more, her opinions were being sought and valued – she was being encouraged to do more than deliver excellent homework assignments. Outcomes between good selective independent schools and good selective state schools are roughly similar. But there are key differences in the journey towards achieving these. State schools spend their more limited resources on the classroom essentials and grades are the focus. They have to be. “In a selective independent school, with a much bigger budget, and smaller class sizes, more attention can be paid to each student’s learning experience and the way each develops as an individual. Interests can be encouraged and students can be equipped with an understanding of how to excel” says Stephen. A boost in confidence and self-esteem naturally follow. Stephen has noticed how students at KGS, including his daughter, willingly chat confidently about a whole range of subjects, and
extra
parents such as he and his wife could not be more impressed with the depth in which teachers understand each child. 90% of the top jobs in the UK go to the 7% of students that attend independent secondary schools. Somewhat surprisingly though, these top jobs are not just in the fields of law, medicine and finance. They are also in drama, music and sport. “The focus on development of each individual and the level of co-curricular (not extra) activities available at top independent schools enables students to discover and pursue their passions and develop these so they excel in whatever profession they choose” explains Stephen. There has been a lot of attention paid recently to the idea of whether schools should be ‘teaching’ students character and resilience – even happiness. It seems I’m not alone in wondering quite how you ‘teach’ these things. Stephen agrees. “In every experience students undertake at Kingston Grammar, in the classroom or outside of it, they have the opportunity to experience success or failure, happiness or sadness. What is imperative is that teachers and staff care enough about their students to help them deal with and contextualise these experiences and feelings, and learn positively from them. We don’t have a motto at KGS, we live a motto - work well and be happy!”

EDUCATION FOCUS AUTUMN 2015 Supporting Excellence
By Olivia Malaure
In the September 2014 issue of Families Upon Thames, I had the pleasure of interviewing Karelle Bird, a local mother in the final stages of completing a massage course at St Marys University in Twickenham. I was lucky enough to squeeze myself back into Karelle’s busy schedule to catch a glimpse of her life a year on. In 2014 Karelle, who previously worked in PR and ran a gardening business in Hampton, qualified as a Massage Therapist from St Mary’s University. The idea originated when her husband, a sports cameraman who spent long hours physically encumbered, suggested that she should pursue a career in massage having experienced Karelle’s healing touch first hand. A few days later Karelle had signed up to a massage course at St Mary’s University, and when we last spoke, she was approaching the end of her year long course. Karelle reports “Studying at St Mary’s was amazing. They genuinely understood the balance between studying and managing a household. The learning environment is so calm that it was easy to switch off from one life and immerse myself in another.” After graduating Karelle began working with a local football team and sports club, giving her the opportunity to put theory into practice. I asked Karelle if, a year down the track she had reached her goals. “I’m not exactly where
I wanted to be” says Karelle honestly. “I’ve had to spend a bit of time thinking about the shape of my new career and how it fits into my life. I thought I wanted to be working from home, because it would provide me with flexibility but having tried it, I’ve decided that the pressure of keeping the house tidy for visiting clients isn’t ideal either!” When it comes to juggling parenthood and work, Karelle explains that she has learned to maximise her time and do whatever she is doing well. “Even it takes me longer than it should, I’ll know I’ve done my best and have no regrets” she says. Karelle’s no regrets approach to life is inspiring and she encourages others to pursue their passions. “It’s entirely possible to be a mum and change career” she says. “If you feel passionate about something, then just do it!” It’s been a challenging and rewarding year for Karelle and I sense that the experience gained from studying at St Mary’s has changed both her work and personal life, and will continue to do so.

Why Stagecoach Gets My Vote!
By Amanda Jane Daniels
My son, Toby, is 10 years old and he has been involved in different drama groups since he was a toddler. As an actress I am often asked if Toby will follow me on to the stage. To be honest, I’m not sure and as it can be an unpredictable career, the thought terrifies me! However, as an actress and a mother, what I am sure of is the importance of drama and the arts in the education of children. As parents we should never underestimate the power of creativity and imagination in the healthy development of our children. Skills learnt through drama, acting and singing are totally transferable to everyday life. Singing and dance, working with beats, rhythms and patterns assist numeracy. Drama classes develop
both leadership and team skills, not to mention teaching children to communicate. The development of breathing, posture, attention to detail, clear diction - the list of positives is endless. The self-esteem that drama nurtures in children stays with them for life. It doesn’t matter to me whether Toby decides on a career in acting, joins the civil service or works in sales, as long as he can walk into a room with confidence and believe in himself. With drama being removed from the curriculum of many schools, the importance of outside drama groups has increased. For that reason, Stagecoach is a real find. It encompasses all of the ideologies I embrace and shares my passion for educating children by harnessing imagination and creativity. Most

importantly, it’s great fun and Toby adores it. Stagecoach has become a huge part of his life. He attends classes for three hours every Saturday. Sessions are split into hourly acting, dancing and singing lessons and children have the chance to experience dance choreography, creative drama and vocal training. Grouped by age and including varying abilities, Stagecoach isn’t about pushing children into show business or making them do anything that they do not want to do. You don’t need to be a budding star to join and I’ve seen the shyest of children blossom after just a term. The structure of the sessions seems geared to hold the attention of the children so they get the most benefit.
extra
Stagecoach operates nationwide and the role of the principal seems vital. Gabrielle Noble at Stagecoach Ealing where Toby attends trained at the Royal Ballet School and has a huge list of West End credits under her belt. She is a great role model and is meticulous in the selection of teachers she employs. As a mother, I feel Toby is in safe hands and is being cared for and nurtured in a positive environment. The dance classes at Stagecoach make movement fun and keep Toby fit as he isn’t keen on sports. The acting classes involve a lot of games, interaction and creative problem solving, as well as script work, improvisation and developing performance skills. They have helped Toby enormously with both verbal reasoning and confidence. The singing classes are Toby’s personal favourite and his voice has really developed under the instruction of the talented Damian Sandys. Each child, regardless of talent, belts out a tune with the same gusto, self-belief and enthusiasm as their counterparts. As someone wiser than I once said “If you can belt out Oklahoma! in front of a room full of people, you can do anything!” Stagecoach offers classes for kids ages 4 to 18 which means Toby has built up a stable and familiar set of friends outside school and they have grown together. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Every Saturday Toby comes home full of confidence, well exercised and with a smile on his face. What more can any mother ask for?

Dance with the English National Ballet in Richmond! The renowned English National Ballet founded its English National Ballet School in 1988 to train talented young dancers for the company and the ballet profession. As you would expect from a ballet company of this calibre, its school is renowned for the strength of its teaching and focus on technique. In February 2011, the English National Ballet took another important step, and set up English National Ballet School Juniors (ENBS Juniors), with the ambition of providing the same high quality ballet teaching to children ages 3+. Weekly classes incorporating RAD syllabi, free work, choreography and other creative exercises were launched at the School’s own studios in Chelsea. By popular demand, ENBS Juniors opened four new classes in Richmond earlier this
year in beautiful purpose-built studios at Richmond Adult Community College. The classes are open to all without audition, with a focus on embedding strong ballet technique to best develop young dancers, within a creative and fun atmosphere. Classes also launch in Putney this month. For further information, visit www.enbschool.org.uk

Getting the Most Out of the Rugby World Cup! sport
By Olivia Malaure
Twickenham Stadium is etched into rugby’s DNA and is the biggest dedicated rugby ground in the world. In fact, with a capacity of 81,605, few sports grounds in the world come close. The Rugby World Cup 2015 kicks off at Twickenham Stadium with the opening ceremony and first match on 18 September and finishes there with the prestigious Cup Final Match on 31 October. If you are new to the game or looking to get your children interested in a great sport, then the Rugby World Cup offers a unique opportunity.
Why Take Your Child to a Match? David Smith from Halfbacks Rugby (www.halfbacks.co.uk), which offers fun rugby sessions in Twickenham for kids ages 2 to 7. Participating in sport develops lifelong healthy habits and being a passionate spectator can encourage such participation. Enjoying a match at a sporting event on the scale of the Rugby World Cup is a once in a lifetime experience. Rugby is a game for everyone. It teaches children values such as the importance of co-operation and teamwork that flourish into positive adult attitudes and encourage international harmony. As we encourage and nurture the future generation, we should feel very lucky to see the Rugby World held in our country. With the growing popularity of rugby, particularly the women’s game, the time has never been better to get your children involved in the sport, and what better introduction than taking them to a big match.
Six Things that Rugby Can Teach Your Child Rugbytots SW London (www.rugbytots. co.uk) offers rugby sessions for children ages 2 to 7 in Twickenham, Barnes, Putney, Surbiton, Richmond and Hampton. Rugbytots SW London has more new classes coming in September! Email aimee@rugbytots.co.uk for local information.
❶ Teamwork Rugby is a game in which you can only succeed by working as a team. No one position is more important than another. ❷ Confidence There is no better feeling when you score a try, make a great tackle or kick over a goal! ❸ Unique Skills With an egg-shaped ball you have to be able to pass backwards, catch and kick. Spatial awareness develops as players are also looking for a clear space to run into so their teammate can pass the ball to them. ❹ Sportsmanship Sport isn’t all about winning – losing is a huge part of the experience too. The losing team demonstrate respect by making a tunnel and clap the winning side as they exit the pitch. Rugby encourages competitiveness and reinforces the need for practise and trying hard. ❺ Managing Conflict How do rugby players manage to stay friends with the opposing team after trying to physically overpower them? They know it is all part of the sport and it isn’t personal. ❻ Sociability Any sport is fun and encourages an active

Danielle Dyer from Try Time Kids Rugby (www.trytimekidsrugby.com) which offers fun rugby sessions for children ages 2 to 7 in Richmond. ● Give your Kids a Team T-shirt or Cap They can either follow their preferred team or get a white t-shirt which they can decorate to show who they support. ● Get Excited! Build anticipation about the event. Talk about how many people are expected to be at the match, how you will get there and what players are on the team. Let your child know if they’re going to be staying up late for the event and what snacks they are going to eat – it all fuels their excitement! Check out www.rugbyworldcup.com/social-hub for online games and activities. ● Create Games throughout the Match

Count how many people have the same team shirts or how many television screens your child can see. Let your child take some photographs. Pack a note pad and pen so they can draw a picture or write down the number of goals or trys each player scores. Be inventive! Start a Mexican wave! ● Explain the Rules during the Game Talk to your child about the players you think are great and ask your children what they see those players doing. Be vocal and encourage your children to join in. Treat them to event memorabilia like a flag or giant foam hand! ● Have a Practice Run Try going to a small-scale local sporting match beforehand so your family get some practice at a smaller event. ● Consider your Travel Arrangements Will you drive? If so, where will you park? If you’re catching public transport, how far is the walk to the stadium and how will your get your children there? Baby carriers are useful for children up to 2 years. ● Be Prepared Buying food from food outlets can also be a fun part of the experience but take a few snacks that you know your kids will enjoy and a water bottle too. Take sun cream and an umbrella. Dress in layers and pack a lightweight raincoat.

By Amit Sohal In a sports match, there is a winner and a loser. Ditto in job interviews, exams and throughout life. So, contrary to some commonly held contemporary opinion, it is good for children to be exposed to winning and losing in competitive sporting situations. It is true that competitiveness can lead to children behaving unpleasantly. They may be upset when they don’t win, hard on themselves if they don’t perform well, or arrogant and boastful if they succeed. Sometimes they may even get so addicted to winning that they take short cuts or breaking the rules in their drive to succeed. However, these behaviours can be dealt with by sports coaches and offer crucial learning opportunities for children. In sport, players master skills through meaningful repetition. Exercises on their own are not as much fun as competitive games between individuals and teams, which disguise the repetition and keep players engaged in learning. Competitive matches and games provide an opportunity for players to use the techniques and skills they have mastered in scenarios which require these skills to be performed at speed and for the player to make good decisions quickly. Crucially, this means that the techniques and skills become game-effective. The outcome of the competition is not as important as the experience of using the techniques and skills in these scenarios. During a competitive match players are aware of the score and who is winning/losing, and this can motivate them to work harder to

win, or push them on to recover if they are losing. If they lose, it’s important that another competitive scenario or the chance to learn a new technique or skill follows quickly on the heels of the loss, so losers do not have the chance to dwell and have the immediate opportunity to try again. Being competitive is an important life-skill, and the success that comes with it is important in building confidence. But it’s the effort and hard work involved in being successful that is valued more than winning itself.

Crazy about Cars at Kiddi Karts! By Olivia Malaure
Kids who are crazy about cars will jump up and down with excitement at the idea of a Kiddi Karts birthday party. They will love learning to drive around the bends of an oval-shaped track, while hearing the encouraging and reassuring cheers of their friends at the side lines. Suitable for children ages 4 to 8, a Kiddi Karts party can be held at either one of the Kiddi Karts regular venues or your choice of venue - even your back garden if it’s big
Maisy’s Children’s Parties building confidence through play

enough! The Kiddi Karts team simply turn up with their inflatable track and go karts and set up Kiddi Karts are easy to drive with a simple on/off switch, and one pedal to go and stop. They are speed adjustable and low to the ground and with a speed limit of 6 miles per hour, there’s plenty of time to save a crash! Each driver has a few minutes per turn in the karts and while the other party guests wait, their Kiddi Karts host leads the children in cheering and revelry to keeping them entertained. It’s a non-competitive racetrack, but at the end of the party the birthday child gets to challenge a grown-up to a race around the track, and wins a personalised trophy with their name and age. “Kids grow up watching their parents drive
and they’re naturally curious about driving” says owner of Kiddi Karts, Laura Palmer who set the business up with her husband after a spontaneous purchase of a track full of go karts! “We wanted to buy just one go kart for our daughter, but my husband couldn’t resist, so we bought them all!” Kiddi Karts aims to give kids a fantastic, fun driving experience.“It’s not something they do every day of the week so it’s a really special birthday treat” says Laura. Venues include Elmbridge Excel Leisure Centre, Spelthorne Leisure Centre and venues in Tolworth and Leatherhead. Driving sessions last 1 hour for up to twenty children and 1.5 for more than 20.
