SPECIAL BOOKS FOR SPECIAL TIMES AT HAPPY FRIENDS NURSERY! by Olivia Malaure
A child’s small developments may seem insignificant to anyone else, but to a parent, they’re really important. During the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage), learning journals are often used by pre-schools to keep parents up to speed with these developments. At Happy Friends Nursery in Whitton, teachers use journals to enrich discussion with parents about a child’s learning journey. The journals are called Special Books and provide a showcase of a child’s time at nursery, with photographs, artwork, and quotes from the child that have been noted down, as well as observations that relate to the areas of development specified in the EYFS curriculum. Parents are encouraged to contribute by writing in their child’s Special Book, or including photographs or artwork from home that capture special moments in their child’s life, like learning to ride a bike or putting shoes on the correct feet. “We
provide parents with Wow stickers so when a child does something special at home, they get a sticker and we can celebrate Wow moments together” says Debbie, Co-Proprietor of Happy Friends. Once a term parents are also invited to a stay and play session at which they have the opportunity to look through their child’s Special Book and view the progress their child has made. At Happy Friends Nursery, children also have the opportunity to take their own photographs of their favourite places at nursery which are put in their Special Book along with their description of why that place is special to them. “We call the journals My Special Book to encourage children to take ownership of them and because they reflect the voice of each child” says Debbie.

Whilst granny or a neighbour may agree to babysit once in a blue moon, for most parents, the disappearance of the spontaneous night out is as inevitable as the 6.30am Sunday morning wake-up call from the little ones.

Day nurseries, pre-schools and nannies offer vital services but what about childcare for those times when these options are not available? What if your regular nanny is ill and you need cover? Who picks up your child when you are stuck in an important meeting and can’t get back for nursery pick up? Who looks after your baby when you have a hospital appointment? Stacey Richard is the owner of Surbiton Sitters, a local business providing ad hoc childcare solutions for families with young children in SW London and Surrey. It’s a business that offers something as valuable as gold dust – flexible childcare – to cover any eventuality. “Parenting can be tough” says Stacey “there are times when you need someone reliable on standby – often there’s nobody there, particularly if extended families live miles away.” Stacey started offering her friends help during the period when they were figuring out the logistics of returning to work after having

even before she had her own daughter. “Being around children feels natural to me” she smiles “and Surbiton Sitters is a business that is close to my heart.” Local Mother Ashleigh Taylor reports “Stacey looked after my daughter Sara for two nights during my hospital stay after the birth of my second child. When I came home they’d made a beautiful card and been out together to buy a present for the baby! I can highly recommend Stacey.” Surbiton Sitters also offers evening babysitting and standby babysitting for pregnant women close to their due date. There are no membership, placement or cancellation fees and no minimum number of hours – because “life doesn’t have minimums either” says Stacey.

Stacey frequently receives calls during the evening with requests for childcare the following morning! Her day may begin early when she picks up the children she will be caring for that day from their families. On busier days, she is supported by a reliable team of trustworthy carers all of whom are DBS checked, have first aid qualifications and between 2 and 10 years’ experience in childcare. Stacey is a qualified child minder and many of her carers are also qualified to Level 2 and 3. Stacey loves children. As the eldest of four, she always baby sat for younger siblings and friends,

Just over five years ago, when I was pregnant, the notion of foregoing a quick trip to the cinema or popping out for a drink, filled me with dread. So, I decided to fight back! Why should parents not be able to do those things without the expense of a full time nanny? It’s possible to order almost every other service imaginable at a few hours’ notice, so why not good quality childcare? Hence Like Minders was born and offers, amongst its other services, a last minute babysitting option. Suddenly it’s possible for eager parents to decide on the spur of the moment that they want a decent Friday night out and why not? It’s even possible to buy babysitting vouchers for friends and family as a gift. Christmas is coming, so there’s really no longer any excuse for your friends to tell you they can’t get a break from the kids – you can buy it for them! My only advice would be, if they are having a late one, make sure you buy them a voucher that covers the childcare for the morning after too!

PARENTING
Make a Difference to a Local Child - Become a Foster Carer! By Susi Cracoft
There are more than 63,000 children in care in the UK, living with approximately 55,000 Foster Carers. Due to a shortage of carers, children are frequently moved from home to home, sometimes having to live further than 20 miles away from their family and friends, and often split from their siblings. Within the boroughs of Richmond and Kingston, there are just over 225 children in care. On average, 27% of these are placed with Foster Carers outside of these boroughs. What do Foster Carers Do? Foster Carers take on the rewarding but difficult

task of taking into their homes children whose own families are unable to look after them. They often pick up the pieces for children who have been neglected, abused and who have had unhappy and sometimes dangerous experiences. They help children and teenagers learn how to live in a family; to trust adults and feel safe, perhaps for the first time in their life; to eat proper meals; to keep in touch with their own family, even if they are people who have hurt them; to value themselves and to become attached to people who care about them. Is Being a Foster Carer a Long Term Commitment? Sometimes but not always. There are various different types of Foster Carer as follows: ✤ Emergency Sometimes a child will be removed from home suddenly as a result of unexpected circumstances, such as a parent becoming unwell, or if it is discovered that they have been victims of neglect or abuse. Placements may be for as little as one night. ✤ Long-Term When a court rules that a child can’t go back to live with his or her birth parent(s), long term fostering can be the best solution if adoption is unlikely (the child may be considered too old to adjust to adoption or have no wish for a new

family). One or more children from the same family can stay with the same Foster Carer until they reach 18. ✤ Respite Carers These carers provide weekend or holiday care for children whose parent(s) or other Foster Carers, need a break. Respite Carers typically look after children with physical or learning disabilities, or those who are experiencing difficulties at home and need time out. They may regularly have a child to stay overnight a couple of times a month and can build a relationship with that child over time. ✤ Family and Friends (Kinship) It is sometimes possible for a family member or friend to look after a child when a parent is unable to do so, and become approved as the child’s official Foster Carer. However they have to be assessed and be able to work within the Local Authority’s plan for the child. Am I Eligible to Become a Foster Carer? There is no upper age limit, or restriction around ethnic background, sexual orientation, being single or part of a couple. Equally, it doesn’t matter if you don’t own your own home. As long as you have a spare room, you can be a Foster Carer. In fact, children under 2 can share your bedroom, if necessary. SO NEVER ASSUME YOU ARE INELIGIBLE – ALWAYS CHECK! Foster Carers can make an incredible difference to the lives of children. One young child reports “I am young. In foster care I feel safe, in a family environment” A Year 6 child says “Living in foster care is hard but easier when you start to get to know your foster family. It is nice because they support you and supply you with everything you need to give you a happy life.” A 16 year old boy in foster care reports “Foster care is good because I can learn English quickly, get a proper sleep, eat good food and learn to cook for myself. I don’t have to live with people who are taking drugs.”

Ignite your child’s imagination this Christmas! Take an entrancing train trip on the Watercress Line – with a surprise visit from Santa on board! For a memorable festive experience, families can book seats on the Santa Special, a traditional steam train, for a one hour round trip exploring the scenic Hampshire countryside. Families are also welcome to bring their own snacks.

THEATRE GUIDE
Winter Warmers at Watermans! By Linda Stone, Editor
What could be better on a wintery November afternoon than heading to Watermans with the kids and taking in one of their Sunday afternoon family theatre performances? Enjoy The Snow Child on 8 November (ages 3-7), inspired by Arthur Ransome’s adaptation of The Little Daughter of the Snow. This delightful play about family, love and the power of dreams explores what happens when a mysterious snow child brings joy and laughter to a frosty village. A wintery landscape where snow foxes, wolves and bears hide amongst the trees adds to the evocative atmosphere. On the weekend of 14 and 15 November, Watermans hosts the Digital Performance Weekender with lots of free family activities including an electronic toys workshop and interactive virtual reality demonstrations. Popular CBBC comedy duo Little Howard and Big Howard will be live on stage on 15 November in Little
Howard and the Magic Pencil of Life and Death (ages 5+). With interactivity, 3D animation and songs, this production promises magic supernatural powers, danger and drama…and lots of laughs. As The Telegraph puts it “I defy you not to be helplessly charmed.” Then on 22 November, Aesop’s much-loved fable The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse (ages 3 to 8) is heart-warmingly brought to life when two friends embark on an amazing journey and discover that new can be exciting and different can be good! Both fans of the classic Kipper children’s books by Mick Inkpen and those new to this delightful character, will be charmed by the magical, warm-hearted, mischievous world of Kipper and his friend Tiger. It’s snowing and Kipper is VERY excited! He sets off on an adventure with his friend Tiger, but will they be able to find their way back home? Delightful giant animal puppets,
world class puppeteering, original songs and dance make this inventive show one not to be missed. Kipper’s Snowy Day is for children ages 3 to 8 years and their families and plays at Watermans from 5 to 23 December at various times. It’s a great way to introduce little ones to the theatre, and wonderful value at just £9 per ticket or £32 for a family of four. Such good value that some performances are already sold out! There’s also a chance to meet the characters afterwards for a photo opportunity, as well as an art competition to enter, which will be judged by Mick Inkpen himself.

Inspiring Dancers of All Ages at Kew Academy of Performing Arts! dance
By Olivia Malaure
Enrolling your child in the right dance school can prove the difference between them giving up after a term, or embracing dance as a lifelong joy and delight. The key is in the right combination of expert teaching, in-depth understanding of the capabilities of children’s bodies and a good dose of FUN - and Kew Academy of Performing Arts in Richmond manages to strike this balance perfectly.
Kew Academy offers ballet for children from 2.5 years upwards and tap, modern and drama from the age of 4.“Pre-schoolers are precious” says Principal, Victoria Maitland “and it’s important that they learn to dance safely. Our Thursday Tots Ballet class is taught by the same level of high calibre, experienced teachers as our classes for older children. I’m very proud of this.” Pre-school classes at Kew Academy are inspired by imagination and classic
The Perfect Gifts for Little Ballerinas! By Linda Stone, Editor
If you’ve ever wanted to buy the perfect gift for a ballet-mad little girl, you may have bemoaned the lack of unique, good quality ballet giftware available from dancewear shops or online. You are not alone. It was this lack of design-led ballet giftware that inspired ballet-mum, Jackie Childs, to develop her own range of branded gifts featuring vintage inspired Little Ballerina characters.“My trade customers were always telling me that they couldn’t find attractive ballet- themed products to offer in their shops”says Jackie. For over ten years, Little Ballerina has been licensed to supply Royal Academy of Dance approved dancewear and its good quality skirts, which are worn at ballet classes, are exported all over the world. The Little Ballerina gift range includes an adorable pre-school tutu, giftware, shoe bags, greeting cards and a colouring book and has recently reached the finals of the
Ceramics Café Kew Original Ceramics - Painted By You prestigious Progressive Pre-School Awards, which select the very best products and services available across the pre-school industry. Little Ballerina products can be bought from all leading dancewear retailers or direct from www.littleballerina.co.uk. They make perfect Christmas gifts!

stories. “Children don’t know they are learning technique, and it feels effortless” reports Victoria. Inspired by Tots Ballet, many pre-schoolers dance with Kew Academy right the way through to their teens, following the syllabuses of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) for ballet, Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) for tap and modern and the London Academy of Music and Drama (LAMDA) for drama. Kew Academy also offers opportunities for children to take their craft to a professional level. It’s not just children who are dancing at this well-respected academy; Victoria has recently launched Fitsteps for adults (16+) on Thursday evenings in Richmond. Inspired by Strictly Come Dancing, Fitsteps is a dance workout class, covering ballroom and latin dance styles.“Some attendees used to dance, and some are complete beginners” says Victoria.“The steps are repetitive, so the dance routines are easy to follow. No partner or dance experience is required.” For further information, visit www.kewacademydance.co.uk

Top of the League Classes at Kiddikicks!
classes, clubs activities
&
sport
By Olivia Malaure
There are so many sports classes available for young children that it’s not always easy to sort the wheat from the chaff. Many classes on offer are franchises but it is invariably those that have dedicated support from their franchisor that offer the best classes. Jack and Jen Don Carolis, who own the franchise for Kiddikicks football classes in North West Surrey cite the support, advice and continued commitment from Kiddikicks owner and franchisor, Sarah Peel, as paramount to their success. Launched in two locations in North Surrey in January 2014, Jen and Jack are already about to add a fourth location to their offering. Becoming a Kiddikicks franchise owner was an easy decision for the husband and wife team who juggle the franchise with the demands of a young family. It was during Jack’s teacher training, and while he worked as a Kiddikicks coach, that he experienced first-hand, the fun and positive experience Kiddikicks offers to families and the promising future of the business. “The pace of the class is quick and interactive and children learn skills in many different ways. Drills and games also change and develop as children get older, which means classes always feel different” says Jack. “We get a lot of positive feedback from parents who
look forward to their weekly session with their child and that’s very rewarding” says Jen. When Jack and Jen set up the business, their franchisor, Sarah, gave them regular and invaluable advice about marketing and how to build the business. She also assisted them in looking for a venue and gave guidance on where to advertise. “Sarah offered us a helping hand every step of the way and we could not have built a business like this
without her” Jen reports. Kiddikicks North West Surrey runs classes for children ages 18 months upwards in East Molesey, Weybridge and North Kingston. Kiddikicks classes are also available in Twickenham, Richmond, Sheen, Brentford and Chiswick. For further information, visit nwsurrey.kiddikicks.co.uk and www.kiddikicks.co.uk
