FAMILY HEALTH and WELLBEING
Acid is the enemy
by Dr Michael Nigro
How does acid damage teeth? Let’s start off by understanding the science behind it all.
Acid draws out the minerals from the enamel which softens it. This process is progressive and that is how cavities form. In addition to this, acid is the irritant that causes the gums to become inflamed, which is called gingivitis. We all need to be aware of which foods and drinks are acidic. We don’t need to cut them out but we should consume them in moderation. Fruit is very good for us but teeth will be damaged if it is consumed
excessively. The same applies to fruit juices. Young children (under five years of age) should drink fruit juice that has been diluted with water. Fruit juices become less tooth-friendly when made from concentrate and when sugar is added because they are then both acidic and contain fuel for the bad bacteria that cause tooth decay. Children’s milk teeth are much smaller than adult teeth but the other difference is that

the enamel, the armour that covers teeth, is much thinner. This means an acid attack will reach the dentine much quicker than it would in an adult. This is why a healthy diet where acidic food and drinks are limited is so important. Sugar, which fuels the acid-producing bacteria must also be kept to a minimum. It is vital that children have regular check-ups, including routine X-rays, as it is important
to detect cavities as early as possible. The enamel of milk teeth is very thin and once decay has passed through the enamel it is very close to the nerve. Cavities that occur in milk teeth often occur between teeth where they are not very visible, hence the importance of taking X-rays. It is important that parents are sensible and realistic when it comes to their children’s diets. Fruit is an important part of a child’s diet and in the right quantities very beneficial as it provides essential vitamins and nutrients. Pure fruit juice must be diluted for young ones and used in moderation and carbonated drinks should be avoided as they increase acidity in the mouth. But help is at hand in the form of fluoride – the weapon against acid damage! Fluoride in toothpaste and mouthwashes will help repair acid damage by replacing lost minerals and children should use toothpaste and fluoride mouth rinse recommended for their age group along with brushing with an electric toothbrush.

A Guide to Meningitis by Dr Sumi Soori
Meningitis is the inflammation of the meninges, the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. Most cases are caused by infection in children, from babies to young adults. It can be a potentially serious illness which can be life threatening. However, if dealt with quickly, it can be treated.
Types of Meningitis
Meningitis is usually caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Viral meningitis is the most common but least serious type; bacterial meningitis is rare but can be life threatening. Possible bacteria and viruses that may cause meningitis: Meningococcal bacteria – types A, B,C,W,X,Y,Z ● Pneumococcal bacteria ● Haemophilus influenza B bacteria ● Mumps virus ● Herpes simplex virus (usually cause cold sores or genital herpes) ● Enteroviruses (usually cause mild stomach infections)
Signs and symptoms
High fever (not always in babies under three months) ● Reduced feeds or nausea or vomiting ● Fatigue, drowsiness or floppiness ● Irritability, confusion, agitation ● Headache ● Bulging fontanelle (soft spot on head) in babies ● High pitched cry ● Rapid breathing ● Pale mottled skin, with cold hands and feet ● Limb/joint pains or stiffness, neck stiffness ● Fits ● Dislike of bright light ● Rash The rash associated with meningitis usually starts with small pinpricks, which then spread throughout the body, turning into red/purple blotches. Glass test: A rash that does not fade under pressure (when a glass is rolled over it) is a sign of life-threatening blood poisoning (septicaemia). However, a rash does not appear in a number of cases of meningitis. Remember that the rash may be harder to see on dark skin. Checking for spots on paler parts of the body (eg palms of hands and soles of feet) maybe helpful in these cases. ●
extra
Complications
Complications are rare after viral meningitis. They are more common after bacterial meningitis, and in approximately 1% of cases it is fatal. ● Hearing and vision loss ● Cognitive problems (memory issues, learning difficulties) ● Difficulties with co-ordination ● Epilepsy ● Bone and joint problems or limb loss (due to rapid spread of infection) ● Kidney problems ● Psychological upset
Vaccines that can help reduce the chances of your child getting meningitis
There are a number of meningitis vaccinations available that provide protection against some of the infections that can cause meningitis. ● Meningitis B vaccine (a new vaccine provided on the NHS for infants, available privately for other children) ● 5-in-1 vaccine (includes protection against Haemophilus influenzae B, a bacteria that can cause meningitis) ● Pneumococcal vaccine ● Men C vaccine (protects against Meningococcal C bacteria) ● MMR vaccine (Meningitis can occur as a complication of measles, mumps or rubella) ● Meningitis ACWY vaccine (protects against four bacteria types that can cause meningitis)

Important points to consider
Not all children get all the typical symptoms ● Don’t wait for the rash as it doesn’t always appear ● Vaccination is key in helping prevent cases of meningitis ● Trust your parental instincts. Act fast, get medical help immediately if you are worried your child may have meningitis ●

Holiday nannying the Like Minders way ‘Relying on local childcare can be a challenging task in some countries when on holiday and even if you do find suitable care it can come at quite a cost,’ explains Bryony Sullivan from childcare agency, Like Minders. This is why Like Minders established a service for holiday nannying, which takes away so much of the hassle and means that parents can have a proper break too. families. This enables the children to have a wonderful time and the parents are secure in the knowledge that their little ones are in safe hands, with fully vetted carers who are DBS checked, with their experience matched to the ages of the children. The added advantage of taking someone with you from the UK is that they will also help on the travel out there – often the part of the holiday which parents least look forward to. ‘Alleviating the inevitable chaos at the airport, having regular help on holiday gives parents a proper break too,’ continues Bryony. ‘It’s become a really popular service and one that I have used on more than a few occasions!’

Summer is well and truly on its way and for many of us, thoughts turn to summer holidays and booking a week or two in the sunshine. In the days before children, it was a far more straightforward affair, and dare we say it, a somewhat more relaxing holiday with the opportunity to recharge the batteries. It can often be forgotten that it’s equally important for parents to have a proper break on holiday too and many will find themselves scratching around to find some last-minute local childcare help on holiday, which can be difficult to find and often at huge expense. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

PARENTING
Everyday mindfulness Mindfulness teacher and author Tessa Watt explains how parents can use mindfulness in the everyday joys and struggles of family life
Mindfulness is a natural capacity we all have for being aware of what’s happening in the present moment. That sounds simple, but many parents find that life is such a rush, that we’re never fully ‘here’ as we’re always worrying about the next thing on the to-do list.
What is the best way to introduce mindfulness to my toddler or child? The most important thing is to follow the oxygen mask principle: put your own mask on first, before you help the child. Small children are naturally mindful, noticing the world around them with great curiosity, fascinated by a leaf or stone they find on the road. We adults are often the ones who are hurrying them

along, teaching them that life is all about getting to the next place. So the more we rediscover how to be mindful ourselves, the more we can appreciate and nurture our children’s innate capacity to be present in each moment. To introduce the idea of mindfulness more directly to children, you can use simple games getting them to tune into their senses. Instead of gobbling down a piece of chocolate or fruit, you can both try eating it very slowly, savouring the smell and texture and taste. Go for a mindful walk, noticing things that are interesting or unusual to look at. On journeys by car or train, find ways to encourage them to look out the window instead of being glued to phones and other devices. Could mindfulness reduce my toddler’s tantrums? When a toddler throws a tantrum, often our own reactions can inflame it further. Instead of adding our own emotions
into the mix, we can take a few breaths and calm our own mind and body. Then we can respond more empathetically and wisely to the situation. My child has a problem sleeping – would mindfulness help? There is a practice called the body scan which many people find helpful for sleep. Using audio guidance, you shift your attention into different parts of the body, letting go of the busy, chattering thoughts which keep you awake. If there’s a lot of adrenaline and excitement, this practice can help you to settle down and get in touch with the natural tiredness of the body. The app Quility, designed especially for parents, includes audios for getting to sleep which are also suitable for older children. Tessa Watt, from Being Mindful, will be speaking on Mindful Parenting at the Mindful Living Show on 2-3 June at the Business Design Centre in Islington. SHREWSBURY HOUSE SCHOOL TRUST ADDS TO ITS PORTFOLIO Shrewsbury House School Trust has purchased The Rowans School in Wimbledon to add to its growing family of schools. The Rowans School has thrived under the stewardship of King’s College, Wimbledon, for the last 15 years and is recognised as an outstanding co-ed pre-preparatory school, providing an excellent academic, pastoral and nurturing environment for its young pupils as they embark on their first experiences of school. The Trust, building on its expertise in pre-prep education, has sought to expand its portfolio of pre-preps and acquired Shrewsbury Lodge in 2009. Priding itself on providing an exceptional level of preparation for the next stages of education, it is ideally positioned to nurture
the unique culture and ethos of Rowans. Kevin Doble, Headmaster of Shrewsbury House, commented: ‘We are delighted to welcome the staff, parents and pupils of The Rowans School into the family of the Shrewsbury House School Trust. NEWLAND HOUSE SCHOOL PREPARES TO OPEN NEW NURSERY
Newland House School in Twickenham is building on the success of its dynamic new Pre-Prep school with the announcement of the opening of a new nursery school this September. The nursery will provide a seamless, natural entry point for children prior to starting at the Pre-Prep and Prep School. Based within its former Pre-Prep premises on Waldegrave Park, the nursery is conveniently located to benefit from the existing, extensive educational facilities and offers an enviable outdoor learning environment. The building was subject to complete refurbishment only a few years ago and is now appropriately adapted to provide spacious and stimulating classrooms offering direct outdoor access.
The new nursery will open five days per week during term time and will complement the Pre-Prep and Prep school day for children aged 3 to 4 years. Children join the nursery in the September following their third birthday which is the year prior to joining Reception. The nursery is underpinned by the school’s distinctive and unique brand, offering a gentle, stimulating and balanced introduction to starting school. Within the nursery, children will benefit from the school’s proven expertise and passionate, supportive and individual teaching approach. Here they will have time to explore, discover and grow whilst becoming accustomed to everyday routines within a safe and nurturing environment.

7 WAYS TO MAKE HOMEWORK FUN! ‘Homework? Boooring!’ Is this a regular moan in your house? We’ve all been there! We want our children to progress and do well at school but after a long day, many youngsters will feel reluctant to sit down to get on with their homework − and no amount of nagging seems to help!
7. Make it visual
If your child feels overwhelmed by everything they have to do, visually being able to see their progress will help. Make a list or chart on a white board or special planner and get them to cross each task off as it is completed. Some new pens and exciting stationary will also keep them happy!
3. Find a study buddy
We’ve teamed up with the experts at Explore Learning to bring you seven awesome ways to make homework ACTUALLY fun.
Hold a homework playdate where your child and one of their friends can do their homework together. Set some rules ahead of time and reward them afterwards with an activity of their choice. Or join your child yourself and accomplish some work of your own – be it catching up on emails, paying bills or planning a holiday. Win-win!
Always be upbeat about school and homework and give your child bags of encouragement. Reinforce how well they are doing, write them inspiring messages and chat to family members about your child’s achievements.

1. Set up a fun and creative space
Having a special place to do work, decorated in personalised decor, can really help children to focus. Avoid busy areas and make sure there are no other distractions, like technology or televisions. Younger children may appreciate their own artwork hung on the walls, while older children may prefer more desk space and personalised planners, so they can organise their work.
6. Be positive
4. Turn it into a game
Turn learning into a fun game. For spellings, you could use flashcards or writing words in foam, or for maths, you could use sweets like Smarties to help visualise numbers. When they get a right answer, they get to eat some!
Where small is special
Nursery & pre-prep school for 2 to 7 year olds Nurturing environment where each child is valued for their unique qualities Excellent academic standards and preparation for local preparatory and independent schools Strong emphasis on pastoral care – helping children develop into confident, articulate individuals Small classes with high levels of individual attention
2. Magical motivators
Keep homework battles at bay by using incentives to keep your child on track. Younger children may be motivated by sticker charts, where they can pick a reward once it is full, whilst older kids may be persuaded to crack on with their work with the promise of time on the iPad. Make sure your child understands the value of developing good homework habits, rather than just receiving a reward! May-June 2017
5. Get outside
If the weather is good, why not let your child do their homework outside? The fresh air will help them concentrate after being inside a stuffy classroom all day. Let them have a short break in between exercises, like a game of frisbee or football.

Youngsters can dress up and choose from a variety of themes including knights and princesses, mermaids and pirates, fairies and pop stars. Stagecoach children’s parties are ideal for birthdays, special occasions and to keep children entertained at weddings. Contact: 0203 723 9702 cobham@stagecoach.co.uk www.stagecoach.co.uk/Cobham

PARTY TIME
Popular kids’ party themes Gandalf to Glinda, and Merlin to Witchfire. Wands, cauldrons, capes and broomsticks are all must-haves. If you are going down the Harry Potter route, stage your own game of Quidditch – if not, magical duels, broomstick races and, of course, an actual magician will go down a storm!
Cookery
There are few things that kids enjoy more than their birthday party, but as a parent, it can be difficult to know how to meet their expectations. We’ve picked eight popular kids party themes that are great for little ones (and plenty of fun for you, too)…
Princess
The princess-themed party is as popular with adults as it is with children. Big dresses, fancy shoes, beautifully quaffed hair and tiaras. You can really go all out with this theme by turning a big chair into an elaborate throne or getting a red carpet! Plus, don’t forget the royal party favours – child-sized clutches and dress-shaped bags make great goody bags! An elaborate princess castle cake is also a must-have for this theme.
Witches and Wizards
The rise of Harry Potter has popularised witches and wizards to the point that most magical themed parties are now specifically Harry Potter affairs. If you have a Potter-addict on your hands, this is definitely a good way to go, but don’t shy away from this theme if your children aren’t mad about the Potterverse. There’s great fun to be had with witches and wizards, from
If your kids enjoy baking, making pizza, or even trying their hand at something a little more complicated, cookery parties are for them. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes that will host children’s parties and teach the kids to cook. If not, you can get them all floppy hats, aprons and rolling pins and stage your own MasterChef tournament at home!
Animals
Animal-themed parties are incredibly simple to do, but so much fun, and there are few children who don’t like animals. You can take the kids to an animal park, farm or the zoo, have them dress up as their favourite animals or even get a petting zoo to come to your house! Face painting is a great activity with this theme, as there are so many wonderful designs to choose from. Why not try a niche of the theme, like big cats or wolves, and book an experience day at a special nature reserve?
Pirates
Kids love a good pirate party to make them go ‘arghhhh’. Party invitations can be really creative too! Simply make your own treasure map with ‘X marks the spot’ and a pirate poem for good measure – you’ll even have the parents laughing! Get little ones to dress up as a pirate or their favourite character from a pirate film – Tinkerbell anyone?
Superhero
Superhero-themed parties are becoming increasingly gender-friendly, with plenty of popular female superheroes evening the odd. Whether it’s Batman or Cat Woman, Superman or Supergirl, Green Lantern or Wonder Woman, Thor or Harley Quinn, there are superheroes galore to choose from. Always popular for fancy dress parties, this is perhaps the easiest choice to go for when picking a theme because there are so many costumes, decorations and gift options available.
Disney
A tried and tested classic theme is Disney. There are literally hundreds of Disney characters to choose from and, much like superheroes, this theme lends itself to either single character or film focus, or an array of all the different Disney darlings. It’s also a great theme to choose for parties with both boys and girls in attendance.
Alice in Wonderland
If you’re looking for something a little more unusual, or you have a bookworm to impress, an Alice in Wonderland themed party is guaranteed to please. With so many wonderful characters to dress up as and the lure of a Mad Hatter tea party, the clothes and food attend to themselves. If you want to go all out, set up a croquet game and get some inflatable flamingos! A prerequisite for this one is a whole lot of unusual fun, and little signs saying ‘Eat Me’ and ‘Drink Me’ on all food and beverages. May-June 2017

GARDENING
How to get the kids outside gardening From the smallest seed in a pot to growing huge sunflowers in the garden, your children will love getting their hands dirty and watching their garden grow. While we may not have the best weather here in the UK, it’s so important for kids to experience the natural world, get some vitamin D and learn some great lessons through gardening. So how do you get them outside? We’ve put together a few creative ways that you can use to encourage your children to start gardening.
Gardening can be a great way to get your kids playing outside, learning about nature and engaging with the environment.
Create a wildlife garden
Kids love animals, bugs and creepy crawlies, and a wildlife garden can be a great way to get them outside and stuck into gardening. Plant flowers such as lavender, honeysuckle and verbena to encourage butterflies and bees in the summer. Maybe think about building a pond to encourage frogs, dragonflies and water boatmen, and let your children learn about the life cycle as they turn from frogspawn to tadpoles to baby frogs. Encourage them to learn about and identify the different creatures and how to attract them to your garden and help them to make new habitats and learn where animals live, from bug barns to hedgehog houses. Great fun!
Do a treasure hunt!
Every child loves hunting for treasure, and what better way to get them outside than to go on a nature hunt? You’d be surprised how many different species are in your garden – dandelions, vegetables, woodlice, earthworms. See who can find the most different animals and plants. If they don’t know what it is, help them to find out on the internet. This is something you can keep up throughout the year, encouraging them to observe the changing seasons and what plants grow at different times. Ask them what plants and animals they would like to see in their garden and start growing these or encouraging wildlife together.
Fill your garden with colours, smells and textures
Choose bright flowers like geraniums, pansies and sunflowers so your kids can enjoy making the garden more beautiful. Choose strong smelling plants like honeysuckle, or plants that make interesting noises, like bamboo rustling in the breeze. Encourage your kids to make their garden their own, and if they love it, let them loose at Grandma’s too!
Encourage your kids to take their favourite toys outside...
Help your child build miniature worlds in the garden for their toys. Let them use their imagination to create a race course with ramps for toy cars, a jungle for their favourite animals to hide in or a fairytale wood for their princess dolls. Encourage them to think about what their little world looks like, and start to name the plants with them while they play.
them when needed, and take care of them. Don’t worry if it doesn’t go to plan and you only get one tomato – it’s a learning process, and your kids can think about why it might not have grown and what to try next time.
Grow your own dinner!
There’s nothing better than eating peas straight out of the pod or picking your first strawberry, and all of these can be grown in your own garden. If you’re not hugely confident with gardening, cress is the best place to start, and you can grow it on your window sill. It’s a great way for children to learn about how plants grow, watching seeds turn into tasty snacks. It can encourage your children to try new foods, after all – they grew it themselves, and it can add to their important five-a-day! It’s a great way for children to learn about the
food they eat and where it comes from, and standing in the mud with a big spade is a million miles away from the supermarket, and far more fun. Some great fruits and vegetables to grow with your little ones are carrots, tomatoes, strawberries, courgettes, salad leaves, herbs, peas and potatoes. Grandparents are great at this kind of knowledge: why not organise a trip to a garden centre with them to choose seeds and plants? Keep an eye on the time of year and encourage your kids to read up on their plants, water
Get messy!
There’s something so satisfying about getting all muddy: kids can’t resist it. Gardening doesn’t have to be about neat rows of flowers. If they can’t get enough of mess, try making bird cakes to hang from the trees, and let them watch as quietly as possible as birds come to feed. Or how about a bird feeder made out of Cheerios and pipe cleaners? Encourage your kids to get crafty in the garden, making everything from bottle top wind chimes to ice lolly stick plant markers, so they know which plant is which.

Set within King Henry VIII’s former Tiltyard, where the elaborate spectacle of the Tudor tournament played out, the new garden takes inspiration from the fairytale-like quality of
the Tudor Palace and is suitable for children aged between two and thirteen. Populated by mysterious mythical beasts, with battlements to storm, towers to besiege, and even a secret grotto to discover, the Magic Garden is a new and unique way for your family to explore the palace’s past and will be open until 27 October.
Valid from 2nd - 26th May 2017.
Only with this voucher (*maximum of 5 people).

SUMMER DAYS OUT
Family Gardening Fun at RHS Garden Wisley Do you love bugs and slugs? Then a trip to RHS Garden Wisley, near Woking, this Half Term should be top of your list! From 27 May to 4 June there will be all sorts of activities around the garden in Wisley’s Half Term Holiday Fun: Bugs and Slugs. Learn all about the different insect garden helpers and some misunderstood villains and create crafts and plant seeds to welcome wildlife into your garden.
However, if you prefer your flying creatures to have feathers then you won’t want to miss the Birds of Prey (27 to 28 May, 11am and 2pm). You’ll be enthralled as these magnificent creatures fly up close in these amazing agility displays. There’s exciting news for the green fingered amongst you as Wisley is hosting its first ever Family Gardening Show (1 to 4 June)! This fantastic family day out includes fascinating talks and have-a-go workshops, with themes as diverse as cooking, slugs and Surrey bees! And if you discover you have a budding young gardener, there’s lots of gardening goodies available to purchase from the trade stands. For little ones, a visit to the special In the Night Garden themed zone should
not be missed. Here you can enjoy Upsy Daisy Yoga, flower-pot decorating, music, story-telling and plant night scented stocks. To make your adventure even more fun, why not join Iggle Piggle on a magical adventure around the garden on the In the Night Garden Trail (from May to June)? You can pick up a free trail at the entrance or download the app before arrival.
As part of the RHS Campaign for School Gardening, local schools will build their own mini show garden, to be judged by Wisley’s Garden Manager in its Budding Gardeners Event (27 May to 4 June). The theme is the Famous Five Go on a Garden Adventure and the gardens will be on show until 4 June, so pop along and vote for your favourite!
