Three local mums have fulfilled their personal dreams and opened The Pavilion Cafe at the new Claygate Clubhouse. The three mums are now aiming to create a hub for the community by offering coffee mornings, art and craft sessions and daily events for children during the summer holidays. Just for you:
What makes you happy?
Mum and party consultant, Penny
Heighes, answers “time with friends.”
Don’t misunderstand me, I have fun times with my family. But nothing beats relaxing with the girls, having a giggle, off-loading woes and celebrating triumphs. We often talk about the time we don’t have for ourselves. For instance, how many mums have time to browse around the shops for luxuries? I’d bet on style and a small show of hands.
Want to update your your wardrobe? Not sure what clothes and colours suit you? Then you need....
• colour analysis • style and image • • wardrobe management • personal shopping • • gift vouchers available •

The solution is home shopping. In the early 1950’s, Brownie Wise, a businesswoman ahead of her time noticed that women could easily sell Tupperware to their friends. By motivating them to run their own businesses, she was the mother of today’s party planning empire, which still runs on her principles of camaraderie and reward. Today this empire is worth over £25m with kitchen equipment, jewellery, candles, clothes and cosmetics all available, not to mention saucy lingerie from Anne Summers!
So if would you like to earn free products and discounts at your own home shopping party, where do you start?
As a party hostess, you will earn commission, discounts and free gifts. Check company profiles to find out the best incentives and boost commission by collecting orders from non-attendees before the party. I’m often asked whether I feel uncomfortable earning commission when my friends buy or book a party. My answer is always: “I am one of the girls first and a saleswoman second. If my friends want to “try, not buy,” that’s fine. What’s most important is that they leave feeling happy.”
Firstly, consider your friends. If they like pampering, go for skincare and cosmetics from new kid on the block, Susan Ma, backed by Sir Alan Sugar, Lov Cosmetics, Arbonne So if you are looking for a truly or Neals Yard. You can even blend your different “girl’s night in,” do your own perfume with Bluebox. If shopping for clothes is a nightmare, then there is Captain homework, get the most from your party Tourtue, with its range of practical, easy to but, most importantly, have fun! wear French fashion or funky Swedish kids clothes from Me and I for a truly “mumsy” coffee morning. For cooking, Pampered Chef or Jamie Oliver have all the gadgets you need. Then there is jewellery, from Stella & Dot to Pierre Lang. These brands are not available on the high Penny Heighes is street. Consider the last time you shopped for a LOV skincare accessories. Were you with your girlfriends? and cosmetics Did you try on everything in the shop? Did consultant. you queue? Well, all these hurdles disappear For further when you shop at a party. A glass of wine, information, email your friends to advise and a whole evening to Penny at penny.LOV@btinternet.com PP_FFF_fly_1_06_12.pdf 1 31/05/2012 16:35 sample the full range. or call on 07788 105868

Skyride
Bike riding for the whole family Inspired by the Olympic Road Cycling Races? Want to get the whole family out there and cycling this summer? Leslie Hunt from Kingston Council tells us how. These fun activities on offer from Kingston Council are guaranteed to get those cycle wheels spinning!
may boost their confidence and learn valuable skills at Kingston Council’s Cyclist Training Scheme which offers free one to one training for adults and children (£5 booking fee applies) Training teaches skills such as riding safely in traffic and riding as a family.
Local Sky Rides
Partnering with British Cycling’s Sky Ride, Kingston Council is now offering Local Sky Rides, free guided community rides around some of the most attractive parts of the local area. The rides are graded according to difficulty, so that an appropriate ride can be chosen:
Need help to keep going?
Recognising that parents may simply not have the time to deal with the maintenance and repair required to keep the family cycle wheels turning, Kingston Council is also providing the following services to make bike riding easier:
Ride Easy: Short rides that take place in a traffic-free environment and are suitable for the inexperienced or young children, although under 5’s must ride in a BS standard child seat or trailer or on a tag-a-long bike.
Free Servicing and Minor Repairs at Dr Bike Dr Bike sessions are held throughout the year. Experienced mechanics check that bikes are roadworthy, make minor adjustments and repairs and advise if urgent attention is needed. Dr Bike is located outside Bentalls in Clarence Street, Kingston. Next sessions: 11am to 3pm on 25 August and 22 September.
Ride Steady: Rides that take about 1½ hours, on mainly flat terrain with the occasional suburban road and are suitable for all ages, subject to the restrictions with regard to under 5s mentioned above.
The best way to introduce a child to the fun and independence of two wheels is on a ‘balance bike.’ These have simple steering and no pedals and make the transition between walking and cycling very simple.
8
Children can run along with the bike between their legs (freewheeling) and soon learn that they need to steer at the same time. Balance and steering are quickly learned, without the distraction of pedalling.
Scoot Cycle from Ridgeback
Safety is always the primary concern when out with children near or on roads. Parents who are new riders or are rusty about road safety,
Leslie Hunt is Leader of Kingston Council’s Smarter Travel Team. For more details about beginning and continuing cycling, including road training, free Dr Bikes maintenance classes, cycle maintenance classes and events, visit www.kingston.gov.uk/cycling.
By Nicola Moore
Ride Strong: More strenuous rides covering 20 to 30 miles at a brisk pace, with a strong likelihood of hills. A reasonable level of fitness is required and children need to be minimum age 13 to participate.

INTRODUCING YOUR CHILD TO CYCLING
Ride Well: For families with children age 11 or over, these last for up to 2 hours on mainly quiet roads and may take in a couple of average size hills.
The rides are led by British Cycling trained leaders who are local volunteers with a passion for cycling and a desire to share their enthusiasm. They guide groups of up to 30 people along a variety of fascinating routes, as well as providing encouragement and guidance to all participants. For more information, visit www.goskyride.com/kingston
Cycle Maintenance Classes Learn bike maintenance skills and avoid paying for repairs at the bike shop! Cycle maintenance classes teach parents to safety-check their bikes, make adjustments and carry out minor repairs. Repairing punctures and replacing brake parts or tyres is quite simple and, once mastered, ensures peace of mind during a family bike ride. Already popular with families, the 4 hour Saturday classes take place monthly in New Malden and cost only £15 per person. Next classes: 21st July and 18th August.
Then, it’s just a small step onto a bike with pedals and this step can be taken without the need for stabilizers. Balance bikes are suitable for children 18 months upwards. Once ready for a proper bike, usually at around age 3, the most important factor is getting a child correctly sized for height and reach. The wrong size bike would not only be uncomfortable but may also be unsafe. Often it is the small details
www.familiesuponthames.co.uk
that make a big difference. For example, having brake levers adjusted so small hands stay in control. When buying a bike, always ensure it has been built by a qualified mechanic and safety checked prior to riding. Getting a child into the habit of wearing a safety helmet from the start is also recommended. Having small children need not restrict your cycling. There are many methods of transporting children in child seats, trailers and tagalongs which link an adult bike to a child’s bike.
Happy Cycling!

“The Three Rs”-
REDUCE, REUSE & RECYCLE!
Save Money and Save the Planet! Recycling became the norm at least a decade ago and these days, children as young as three can articulate the concept. More recently, ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ has become a mantra repeated as often as the original 3Rs, with many families now recognising the various benefits of ‘reuse.’
Yet charity shops are in desperate need of donations. They will only survive if ‘reusing’ becomes automatic in the same way that ‘recycling’ now is, with donating to charity shops an integral part of the cycle.
Reuse, in all its forms, reduces landfill and cuts down on greenhouse gas emissions. Global reuse leads to the production of fewer new products which, in turn, reduces the carbon footprint of new production. This is of enormous benefit to the environment.
There are more details about different ways to sell, donate or buy second hand goods locally below. So seek one out soon - the three ‘R’s have never been so important to all our futures.
The ‘reuse’ philosophy makes sense for everyone; the family home is de-cluttered, the pressure on family budgets is eased and unwanted items are either resold or donated to charity, to be reused by new owners. Donating means being socially responsible consumers AND supporting good causes.
Written by Jemma Banks Jemma is Marketing Co-Ordinator for FARA Charity Shops.
TURNING HOUSES INTO HOMES AND SAVING WASTE! In times of recession, we all need to make sure we get value for money when furnishing our home, as well as considering the environment and those less fortunate than ourselves. It’s also vital that we lead by example in teaching our children these things. Kingston Community Furniture offers the opportunity for us to do just that. What is Kingston Community Furniture? Kingston Community Furniture was established in 2005 to supply quality reusable furniture to people in the Royal Borough of Kingston. Since then, it has expanded and now also serves the Surrey Boroughs of Elmbridge and Spelthorne. How can Kingston Community Furniture help you? ♦ By turning houses into homes, at a fraction of the price it would cost to buy new! It stocks a complete range of furniture and white goods from sofas and armchairs to beds, wardrobes, tables, desks, computers, televisions and fridges, all in marvellous condition. It offers all of its reusable items to the local community. Hunt around and you can find something really
original and scarcely used, at a bargain price! ♦ By collecting and taking away high value, bulky items of furniture that can otherwise be difficult to dispose of. It offers a collection service for most items, covering the boroughs of Kingston, Spelthorne and Elmbridge. ♦ By reducing the rapid depletion of the world’s limited resources. It recyces anything that can’t be reused. ♦ By offering special discount to anyone on a means-tested benefit (eg JSA, ESA, Council Tax Benefit. Donating directly benefits those less fortunate than yourself. How can you help Kingston Community Furniture? ♦ By giving it the first option to collect any bulky waste items you may have. It prides itself on generally being better value for money than anyone else. ♦ By buying from its warehouse. ♦ By volunteering ♦ By telling others about what it offers. For further details, visit www.kingstoncommunityfurniture.org.uk
ARE YOUR KIDS GROWING OUT OF THEIR SCHOOL CLOTHES TOO QUICKLY? If so, then visit mykids2yourkids, the online market place for trading second hand school uniforms, sports kit and other kids’ essentials. mykids2yourkids was the idea of mum of four, Ali Morrill, who set it up to help other mums and carers like
10
her. The cost of school uniforms, sports kit, musical instruments, ballet costumes, riding hats, and appropriate attire for Brownies and Scouts, takes its toll on the household budget. Children grow so fast that they are often in need of new school clothes more than once a term, and the clothes they’ve grown out of are hardly worn.
www.familiesuponthames.co.uk
At mykids2yourkids, parents can sell and buy pre-loved school uniforms and other clothing essentials. Advertising space is free and parents can keep money from sales or donate it to the Parent Teacher Association of their child’s school. For more information, visit www.mykids2yourkids.co.uk

Charity shops practice reuse by sorting donations, reselling items that are not fit for sale to recycling companies which ship to developing countries to be sold. The hardest part about donating to charity is remembering to pick up the bags when you leave the house.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY FARA! CONGRATULATIONS ON 20 YEARS OF GROUND BREAKING WORK
This year, FARA Charity Shops celebrates its 20th anniversary. The first FARA Charity Shop opened in 1992 to raise money to alleviate the appalling conditions children were suffering in Romania’s state institutions. Since then, FARA has opened a further 47 shops to fund the on-going support of these children. In January 1994, the first dedicated FARA children’s shop opened in Pimlico. Children grow fast and it’s possible to buy fantastic quality, original gear from FARA at reasonable prices, use until the little one grows, donate the item back to FARA and buy bigger sizes. From clothes, to toys, to buggies – this saves parents both money and space at home. There are currently 11 FARA Kids shops situated throughout central and south west London and FARA Books in Teddington also has a fabulous children’s section. REUSE AND EARN REWARD POINTS!
Re-ward Club What is Re-ward Club? Re-ward Club, launched in May 2012, is an initiative set up by the West London Waste Authority and Richmond and Brent Councils. West London Waste sends to landfill every piece of non-recyclable rubbish that residents of the local area throw away. This amounts to 525kg of rubbish each year and a staggering cost of £31.5m to local householders. The aim of Re-ward Club is to provide an incentive to families to reuse or repair items that would otherwise be thrown away and to hire items, rather than buying new. What Can Re-ward Club Do For You? ♦ Reward those who spend money at participating retail and business outlets: ● buying second hand goods ● buying products with recycled content ● repairing items ● hiring items instead of buying new by giving them tokens which
can then be exchanged for £5 vouchers. These vouchers can be used to buy more second hand goods or repair or hire at the same participating outlets. ♦ Facilitate the donation of these £5 vouchers to a community group of your choice ♦ Help reduce the cost to householders of rubbish going to landfill ♦ Help you to support local businesses You can find details about participating businesses at the Re-ward Club website. These include Princess Alice Hospice shops in the borough of Richmond, The Richmond Furniture Scheme, which sells pre-loved furniture, and Giant Bikes and Blue Gnome computers in Twickenham, which offer servicing and repairs. The list of participating businesses is expected to grow rapidly. What Can You Do For Re-ward Club ? ♦ Join – it’s easy, free and there is no obligation to buy ♦Tell it about the bargains you find and recommend other shops and businesses for inclusion in the scheme ♦ Help it reduce the rubbish that goes to landfill every year in your local area For further information, visit www.re-wardme
THE BEST OF EBAY WITH THE LOCAL BENEFITS OF FREECYCLE! Sellthingslocally.com, launching this month in the borough of Richmond, is an online site which allows consumers to buy and sell second hand items in the borough in which they live. Many busy parents find Ebay time-wasting. The auction progress is protracted and there is no guarantee of winning it. In addition, wrapping, posting, couriering or picking up from a distant destination can be an expensive hassle. Sites like Freecycle are very handy for giving something away, but what about those hardly-used but expensive household items, baby equipment and children’s toys for which a return is needed?

Parental anxiety is normal at the time your child moves from primary to secondary school. During the primary school years, it is fairly easy to support your child at school. You will probably know his teacher, other members of staff and parents, as well as being familiar with school policies and routines. Losing the control this familiarity offers is as daunting for parents as it is for children and you may wonder how best to continue to support your child. You may also worry specifically about your child’s ability to cope with the new environment and crucially, whether he or she will make friends. Your anxieties may be eased by adopting strategies that help with the transition. Here are some tips and tools which should help you prepare for and manage the early months: Before the transition: 1. Shield your child from your anxiety They can make this transition. Critically, they need to know that you believe in them and their ability to deal with difficulties and challenges. 2. Relax the organisation Towards the end of year 6, step back from the organisation of your child’s school life eg packing school bags etc. You may secretly want to savour these last few months of dependency but your child needs a taste of independence. If they are slow to take up the reins, don’t take over and don’t despair, they will get there eventually. 3. If your child will walk to school or travel independently on public transport, practice the new journey Start by travelling together but without interaction. Then move to simply following behind your child. Finally, let him do it alone and meet him there. Travel at busy times. Allow your child to make mistakes and find solutions. This equips him with the skills to handle the unexpected, like bus detours and road closures. After the transition: 1. Be There Make sure a parent or trusted carer is available before and after school, to provide food, notice if your child comes in late, listen to his successes and concerns and be aware of subtle changes in mood; someone to empathise and with whom to discuss problems. Watch and listen, help out if asked but don’t take over. Become an Enabler rather than a Fixer.
2. Support the development
of friendships Mixing socially and establishing secure friendships is of great importance to older children and they need to do this whilst still young enough to turn to you for support when they make mistakes. Gradually, they will learn to make informed choices about friends. It’s appropriate for this age group to have access to a basic mobile phone and computer to communicate with friends but the dangers of social networking should be discussed and boundaries agreed. 3. Support organisation and routines Create “To Do” lists or “Timetables” for the fridge, agree places to keep bags, kit, and books. Label uniform and valuables. Establish routines so they can get to school punctually. Don’t expect too much too soon, many won’t crack this for years! 4. Understand what homework they have and know when it has been completed and handed in Agree a routine that will help your child to complete and hand in all homework on time, without devoting too much time to one piece and little or nothing to others. However, remember it is their homework not yours; help, encourage, motivate but accept their best. 5. Schedule time to relax. Your child will be exhausted by the effort of holding it all together. Tears are likely over the most trivial things and they may regress and demand more care. Trust that they can cope and make sure there is time for sleep, friends, homework, more sleep, watching TV, playing computer games and yet more sleep! Avoid weekend breaks and reduce extra-curricular commitments to the minimum. Now is not the time for your child to begin new activities or classes. And lastly, schedule time to relax yourself! All will eventually be well.

Capturing
the moment How to record your special family moments this summer.
! ".#/,!012//"
W
hether a rainy trip to the zoo or building sandcastles on the beach, memories of family holidays and days out are some of the fondest memories we all have and looking at photographs helps us bring those memories back to life. So how do you transform an ordinary snap into a photograph that is really true to the essence of the moment?
Get to know your camera
Whether you are using a camera phone, point and shoot, or a digital SLR, you need to understand how it works and the only way to do this is by playing around with it. When you start, don’t worry about capturing the perfect photograph – you will learn just as much from your mistakes as your successes. Test the different settings: for instance, portrait mode or ‘aperture priority’ blurs the background of your photograph and is great for drawing attention to your subject. If your little one is full of energy and wants to run around, you will need a fast shutter speed, so sports mode will help capture the action.
See the light
We all love bright, sunny days but squinting into the sunshine doesn’t make for a pretty picture. Try and look for open shade and position your family in the soft, even light it provides. When shooting indoors, switch off your flash and position your subject facing a window. Using the flash will create harsh and unflattering light.
Get down with the kids
Get down to your child’s eye level and see things from their perspective. You’ll get better expressions and they’ll engage with you more. Move with them and play around with the angle of the shot to get interesting and dynamic images.
Don’t be a poser
Older children may want to put on a show for the camera and, although big, cheesy grins can look fun, try and shoot your photos candidly. Stand back and capture your children naturally without them looking at the camera. A zoom lens can help with this.
Be composed
Thinking about the composition of your photograph will make a huge difference to the end result. To make a photograph more

Get in the picture
You don’t want to look at the photos in 20 years’ time and be asked “Where are you Mum?” Involve the kids and let them have a go pressing the shutter. You’ll also get a different perspective if other members of the family take the shots. Use the self-timer and ask fellow tourists to take photos of you all, or consider hiring a professional if you want to capture the entire family together.
Capture the big and small things
Remember to capture not only images of your children but also your surroundings, the local sights, landscapes and the tiny details – your names written in the sand, your favourite local food, the things that tell the story of your time together.
Make it fun
If you photograph your children doing what they like best, whether it is kite flying, baking cakes or feeding the ducks, you’ll get them at their best. Some children don’t like to be photographed, so get them involved in choosing locations and stop to show them the photos you’ve just taken on the screen, rather than pointing the camera at them the entire time. If it’s not happening, respect that and try again another time.

then, read on. NURTURE YOUR CHILD’S NATURAL CURIOSITY
Why is the sky blue? Why do things fall to the ground? How do seeds grow? Children are naturally curious and ask a thousand questions every day. When they Mother ask how and why things happen and learn how Nature to find answers to their questions, they are being Science “scientific.” Yet, paradoxically, many children say science is “boring” or underperform in this subject at school. Perhaps they are not able to make sense of what they see and relate it to their existing ideas and knowledge. If given this support, then they have much more chance of becoming successful “scientific” thinkers. Children can receive such support at a summer camp and a child’s interest in science can be stimulated in this fun, relaxed environment. Mother Nature Science, the leading UK provider of science tuition, presents traditional science learning for kids aged 5 to 12, in an accessible way with a focus on experiments, surprises and discoveries. Topics like balance, friction, energy, multiple reflection, diffraction and momentum, become exciting when learned in the context of Acrobat Toys, Momentum Marble Runs, Friction Sprinters, Kaleidoscopes, and Explosive Energy Shows. Mention these to your child and he’ll race to get there! For more information on Mother Nature Science Summer Camps, visit www.mnaturescience.co.uk
THE ART OF SELF-REFLECTION
According to many studies, art is an excellent way for children to express themselves and their self-esteem is strengthened through their artistic accomplishments. The process of creating lays down pathways in the brain which dictate how a child will experience the world in the future. The process of Artyard Handmade reflection is also important. By reflecting on the experience of creating something and sharing those reflections, a child learns about himself, others, and the world. So it is the process of learning, rather than what is learned that stimulates a child’s mental and emotional growth. In this way, art nurtures a child’s soul. Artyard Handmade offers “grown up” summer workshops for childrenLittle age 5 Kickers to 12. July-August 2012
These 2 or 3 day workshops run throughout the summer holidays and each has its own unique theme. The workshops cover many aspects of art from the style and work of different artists such as Debuffet and Damian Hurst, to designing clay sculptures and cuckoo clocks, to creating puppetry and mosaic. The Artyard team are all trained artists that love sharing their knowledge with children and nurturing and exploring all elements of contemporary and historical design. Kids will learn new skills and develop their own special style in this very unique space. For more information on Artyard Handmade Summer Workshops, visit www.artyardhandmade.co.uk
STEP BEHIND THE SCREEN
A decade or so ago, hands on film making experience with film professionals, wasn’t something that was available to children. Through the innovation of successful UK film companies, such as Magma, which set up Young Film Academy, it is now possible to get out there and make a film as soon as you turn 10! Acclaimed writer and film maker, Richard Curtis, (Four Weddings, Bridget Jones)
Young Film Academy recently sent his sons on the Young Film Academy’s Four Day Film Course and reported that they came back from it “knowing more than I do!” Meanwhile, participant Anders Pearson stated “It was an intense thrill ride which I will never forget.” At the course, children can make and star in their own film, which will be premiered at the end of the week. Participants learn the basic of film origins and history before exploring acting, writing, editing and camera work. Then they

make a film themselves. For any child with his eyes on the big screen, this course will offer both the steepest learning curve and the best fun ever. It’s also a great way to discover whether film making could be his future career choice and put him a step ahead of the game. For more information on Young Film Academy, visit www.youngfilmacademy.co.uk
THE IMPORTANCE OF COLLABORATION
Working collaboratively and overcoming difficulties, by consensus, to achieve a particular outcome, is a key life-skill for which there is no specific training. It is never too early for children to start learning this skill and participating in drama can help. As well as assisting social and personal development, performance sharpens a child’s problem Step on solving skills. Studies show that children Stage involved in drama tend to have higher Academy academic results and also demonstrate improved self-confidence and better public speaking skills. Performing in a play requires children to follow a time line, use self-discipline, and accept feedback. These disciplines are highly valuable in most careers. At Step On Stage Summer School, participants aged 5 to 18 develop all the above skills. During an intense week of learning, practice and rehearsals, children sing, act, dance and experience musical theatre, working towards a fully staged performance. They also participate in a Stage Combat Masterclass Workshop. Older children can meet West End stage and television professionals, whilst a fabulous “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” workshop is available for children aged 3 to 7. The beauty of these workshops lies in the small classes, the range of disciplines on offer and the passion of the experienced industry professionals that teach them. ON A SUNNY DAY…
Paint the garden fence, wall or patio with water: Great for small children, this is simple and mess-free. All you will need is big brushes, like wallpaper brushes. Or try hand/foot/finger painting on the largest paper you can find. Get out the garden hose to clean everyone off! Have a water fight: Water restrictions permitting, have a water fight in the back garden with two teams, one guarding a base, and the others trying to get to the base and steal the secret treasure! Plant some seeds: Do this at the start of the holidays and watch the seedlings grow. Wildflower, cress and sunflower seeds show early results, and the children can be responsible for them during the holidays. Enjoy some playground games: Draw a hopscotch grid on the front drive or patio or buy a few small, bouncy balls, and gather small stones from the garden so the kids can play Five Stones. Check out the
website www.playgroundfun.org. uk for more inspiration or visit www.teachingexpertise.com and download a free copy of Traditional Playground Games. Build a den: Arrange garden furniture with old sheets or blankets on top to make a den. These can be fastened with clothes pegs, if it’s windy. Children can have snacks and drinks inside. Make a time capsule: Hide or bury any waterproof container in the back garden, for digging up next summer. Ask the children to list things that should go in and make suggestions to get them going. Then let them loose to have fun choosing! Supervise the burying of the capsule if you want to keep your garden beds intact and remember to mark the burial spot! Make mud pies: Mud and water will keep youngsters thoroughly absorbed for hours. Find them a patch of dirt, some spades and forks and some buckets of water and get the hose out again to clean them up!
Hold a board game marathon: The kids must get through at least 10 board games in a day. The winner of the marathon is the child who wins the most games. Create and sell your own artwork online! Are your kids budding artists looking for a platform for their art? They can now showcase, share and even sell it online at newly launched site, Artbeez. Approved by community management platform, Crisp, this social network is both fun and safe. Children can open their own online gallery for nothing and, when artwork is bought, 100% of the proceeds go straight to charity or to the PTA of their own school! For a small joining fee, kids can elect to keep some of the sale proceeds. To find out more, visit www.artbeez.com Have a floppy afternoon: Make popcorn and let the kids curl up on the sofa in front of a favourite movie and relax. Create a collage: Buy some blank canvases from art or home ware stores. Gather old newspapers, magazines and postcards with plenty of pictures and graphics. Using PVA glue and paint, the kids can create a summer collage
extra
on the canvas or make a collage from the family photos that you haven’t put into albums. Start an online blog: If your child is a budding journalist, why not encourage him to start his own online blog? There are easy ways to start blogs using www.blogger.com and you can protect the settings. Your child can use the blog to upload pictures and record the highlights of the summer holidays, as well as for creative writing. Put on shows! Younger children can re-tell their favourite fairy tales and stories and older kids can stage new pieces or perform a mini X-Factor. Keep a selection of your old clothes, accessories and jewellery in a dressing up box for costumes. Read 6 or more library books: Story Lab, the 2012 national Summer Reading Challenge, is being run in libraries this summer. Enrol your children for free. Every child will receive a membership card or pack. For more information, visit www. summerreadingchallenge.org.uk.

Avoid ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’… enjoy theGreat Outdoors
By Linda Stone
Recently the National Trust coined the phrase ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’ to describe how today’s children are more disconnected from nature than ever before. We all grew up climbing trees, camping in the garden and making mud pies, but our own memories of daily outside play seem far-removed from today’s stressful reality of juggling work, family holidays and childcare. However, with just a small amount of planning and a few resources, it IS possible to get the whole family outdoors and having a great time.
Here are my suggestions for this summer.
Ramblers Association
Take a Walk…
Short Walks: The Ramblers Association is leading plenty of short, free, family friendly walks this summer that everyone is welcome to join. Visit www.ramblers.org.uk/walksfinder, or for information on getting children and families walking, visit the Ramblers short walks website at www.getwalking.org. Pushchair Friendly Walks: If you’ve recently had a baby, pack your family in the car and walk your way back to fitness with Catharine Gregory’s new book “Buggy Friendly Walks in the Thames Valley.” Walks are circular, between 1.5 and 6 miles long and suitable for pushchairs and include maps, route descriptions and other handy information. ☛ENTER OUR FABULOUS COMPETITION ON PAGE 18 FOR THE CHANCE TO WIN A COPYOF THIS BOOK!
Ride a bike…
Go Sky Rides are free, community bike rides, giving you a chance to get out and explore your local area. For more information, see our feature on page 8. Sustainable Transport (known as Sustrans) offers a free information pack with details about local cycle routes, as well as a Cycling With Children booklet. You can map walking and cycling routes from your home. For more information, visit www.sustrans.org.uk
Go on a treasure hunt!
Treasure hunts are great fun for all ages and a fantastic way for families to explore both locally and further afield. On foot: Online treasure hunt provider, HuntFun, has set up treasure hunts in over 240 locations countrywide. They include directions, clues and a map. Each hunt takes about 2 hours to complete. The cost of a treasure hunt is minimal and it can either be sent via post or downloaded. Life Coach Lisa
Parkes tells us how to teach our kids the secret ingredients of self-confidence
Dear Lisa,
son. I am concerned about my and s she blu and shy y ver He is He is mumbles when he talks. He is being bullied at school. with confident with us but not ily. Can fam the side out one any you help us?
A concerned mother
In the endless debates that take place about the quality of education today, it is rare to hear about the importance of teaching our children emotional intelligence and social skills. Yet these are the accomplish-
ments that will most dictate whether or not they go on to be happy, successful human beings. Kids Life Coach, Lisa Parkes, believes that many children who struggle with confidence need some simple tools and quick tips that will make growing up easier. One of these is “behaving as if.” This means identifying body language and behaviour that indicates confidence. Some children may confuse aggressive and confident behaviour, so it’s important to distinguish between the two and then ask children to identify people they know that behave confidently. By teaching shy children to watch
the body language of confident children and then asking them to copy the way confident kids behave, walk, stand and speak, they will learn that, after a while, they really do feel more confident - the “as if” behaviour becomes the real thing! Lisa also believes in the importance of eye contact and the power of a smile. Eye contact is particularly difficult for shy children and smiling is wasted without it. Children may be able to make eye contact with close family but not others and will need to practice with other children in a safe environment, before they feel confident enough to do this in the outside world.
extra Lisa’s passion is using interactive games, role play, creativity, exercises and discussion to teach children tools that will make them more resilient to life. To help children suffering from shyness, lack of confidence or low self-esteem, Lisa will be running a series of workshops for children aged 8 to 15 in Cobham during the holidays. For further information, visit www.lisaparkeslifecoaching.co.uk

Nurturing a lifetime love of music How to develop the musicality of your child
T
he ear of the foetus is the first organ to fully develop in the womb, enabling babies to take comfort in the music of their mother’s voice just 11 weeks after conception. All children are born with instinctive musicality but, only if this is encouraged in the early years, will a child fulfil its musical potential. According to Dr Edwin Gordon, an expert in music-learning theory, “Regardless of level of aptitude with which children are born, they must have formal and informal experiences with music to maintain that level of potential.” Dr Gordon adds that, without these, “A child’s innate music aptitude, whatever its level, will diminish, possibly vanishing to almost nothing.” Early exposure to singing, listening to and playing music can also sharpen up a whole range of new skills in a young baby. Familiarity with language and numeracy flourish as a result of action songs and rhymes; fine motor skills are refined through playing and holding percussion instruments and awareness of space and of one another is developed through movement. The confidence and self-esteem of the child grows rapidly as he or she becomes more involved in the group. Research reveals that when we move and sing at the same time we engage nearly all of our brain, enabling us to translate and store new information very efficiently. Dr Diane Bales, author of the study “Building Baby’s Brain: The Role of Music” tells us, “Babies are born with billions of brain cells. During the first years of life, those brain cells form connections with other brain cells. Over time, the connections used regularly become stronger. Children who grow up listening to music develop strong music-related connections. Some of these music pathways actually affect the way they think.” So music classes are a great way of developing your baby’s brain and skills, as well developing his or her innate musicality. The classes should be age-appropriate, as the needs of a baby and a toddler are very different, and mix singing, movement and the chance

for babies to make their own sounds using instruments. Guildhall School of Music & Drama graduate, Angie Coates, who founded music franchise Monkey Music in 1993, says: “It’s never too early to expose your child to live music Go to any free dress rehearsals for local productions, stand at the back of carol concerts and stop to enjoy the sound of the Salvation Army outside the supermarket.”
Her tips for developing the musicality of your toddler are: 1. Instead of humming your favourite song, use different sounds to make up the tune. This way your child hears single syllable and vowel sounds …ba ba baa baba ba ba ba, ma ma maaaa, dada da daaa! 2. Punctuate your day with familiar tunes and rhymes so that your youngster associates a happy routine with positive musical sounds. For example, sing a ‘getting up and getting dressed song’ and a ‘getting ready for bed song’. This allows your child to hear your voice, his or her favourite sound of all! 3. Dance and sing whenever you can! But what happens by the time you have a pre-schooler who is going to nursery and has less time for classes? Try to find a music class that fits in with your schedule and that moves on to the next level, perhaps teaching notation so your child can learn to read a musical score. The next step for your child is learning
an instrument and you don’t need to wait until he or she reaches school age. Studies show that, whilst listening to classical music improves the ability to do spatial tasks such as a jigsaw puzzles, this wears off quickly after the music stops. However, learning to play an instrument can have longer-lasting effects on spatial reasoning. In several studies, children who took piano lessons for six months improved their ability to do jigsaw puzzles and solve other spatial tasks by as much as 30%. Researchers believe that this is because musical training creates new pathways in the brain. Don’t forget though that brain development is only a secondary reason for your child to create, learn about and play music. The primary reason is that it is extremely rewarding, lots of fun and will hopefully be a passion that will enrich your child’s life.

Daniela’s fine choice Twickenham mum of three and small business
Daniela Schaffrik is a dynamo. In 2007, she emigrated from Frankfurt to Twickenham with her husband, Peter, and their eldest son, David (now 6), and since then she has learned to speak perfect English, adapted to London life, had two further children and started her own business. Softly spoken, with a warm smile, Daniela claims that the business keeps her sane. “It’s entirely my own thing” she says. “When I became a mum, I found it hard to give up my freedom. Having my own business gives me some of that back.” When Daniela’s third child, Larissa, turned 1, a friend asked where she had bought her son, David’s, non-plastic drink bottle. In fact, she had borrowed the bottle from her sister-in-law and was surprised to find that non-plastic drink bottles were in short supply with plastic ones provided by most schools. Daniela did some research which indicated that many plastic bottles contain the chemical bisphenol-A or BPA, which is potentially harmful to babies and young children. Its use was finally banned in baby bottles in the UK in 2011. This set Daniela thinking about an eco-friendly business that would initially sell stainless steel BPA-free drink bottles for children.
“I found myself standing outside the car at the side of a busy road, talking to a customer on my phone, whilst all the children were sitting in the car screaming” In early 2011, Daniela became UK distributor for US company, Simple Solutions and ordered 5,000 of their ”green” stainless steel bottles. David had just started school, Jannis, Daniela’s middle son, was at nursery 4 mornings a week and Larissa was about to attend the same nursery, 2 mornings a week. Daniela discovered it was impossible to work when the children were home and awake, so this cut down her working hours to 2 mornings a week and when the children were in bed. She resolved to be available to them during school holidays and whenever they were sick. More than a year on, she has stuck to her own rules. “I put my phone away when I’m with the children and resist the urge to look at it. I also make sure the computer doesn’t beep when I get email” she says. “Getting rid of these distractions helps me be really present with the kids.”
owner, Daniela
Schaffrik tells us how she juggles work and motherhood.
Daniela finds switching focus 3 or 4 times a day challenging. She works until noon, looks after Larissa between noon and 3pm, looks after all 3 children after school until bed time and then, some evenings, it’s back to work again. “Retaining thoughts through those various transitions can be difficult” she admits “And I hate waiting until the evening to follow up the morning’s work, particularly if it’s urgent.” Sometimes there is conflict between her desire to move the business forward and her resolve to spend time with her children “I feel like the business has been in continuous start up for over a year now” she said. “I simply can’t move it forward as quickly as I would like.” By the same token, Daniela admits that having “a very long launch” means that she has definitely had time to set up the business properly. Daniela has already faced many tricky “juggling” nightmares. “I found myself standing outside the car at the side of a busy road, talking to a customer on my phone, whilst all the children were sitting in the car screaming” she confides. “Believe me, it wasn’t easy to concentrate.” She has also taken Larissa to business meetings. “I let her pour sugar all over the table at a café which is something I wouldn’t normally allow,” confesses Daniela with a wry smile. Daniela believes her life feels balanced because she chose the right business opportunity.
Prior to having children, she was a Project Manager at a bank where each project provided an opportunity to learn something new. She finds the same benefit with the business she has chosen and is also constantly acquiring news skills. “I also largely set my own deadlines” she says. ”This allows me to drive the business forward when I can and pull back when family commitments demand“ She enjoys being self-employed. “I couldn’t be the mum I want to be and turn up at an office at the same time every day” says Daniela. “Not having the flexibility to organise my own time around my family would be much more stressful for me than anything I have encountered in setting up and running my own business” she adds. Daniela’s company, A Fine Choice, sells eco-friendly BPA-free stainless steel drink bottles. The bottles come in different sizes, for kids, adults and even dogs! She also sells bottles with school or company logos. The bottles are sold retail, wholesale and at school fundraisers with a percentage of her takings going back to schools. For more information, visit www.afinechoice.co.uk
SPECIAL OFFER: Daniela is offering 10% off the purchase price of her drink bottles exclusively to Families Upon Thames readers. Quote FUT10 to qualify.

How do toddlers learn? Sarah Blyth explains.
During the first year of life, a baby develops rapidly into a toddler, able to make his needs known through body and facial movements and a widening variety of sounds. This small individual has learned these methods of communication through interaction with the people closest to him. The life of a toddler becomes about discovering the ‘wonders of the world’ and it is often the experiences which, for us, have become mundane and meaningless, that guide, teach and delight our toddlers most. Whilst we may think that getting into a paddling pool in the garden is a more exciting way for our toddler to learn about water than splashing, pouring and squirting in the bath every night, it is the latter everyday experience, familiar and routinely repeated, that allows the toddler to experiment and learn how water works. At the same time, again through repetition, our toddler may also start to understand that
extra
water needs to stay in the bath, otherwise the mat gets wet and feels cold when he gets out. Certainly we can try to “teach” our toddler what shapes and numbers are, but the benefits of this will be limited. However, if she is playing, touching and sitting on a drain cover, and is told that it is a circle, then he will have a better understanding of what that word means. Similarly, a toddler is likely to learn about numbers most quickly through counting rhymes or by counting different parts of his body. The former also assists with learning the early rhythms of speech, whilst the latter develops an awareness of symmetry. Take as many opportunities as you can to name for your toddler what he is seeing, hearing, touching and smelling. This helps her start to label these things for herself. Remember, to a toddler, playing and experiencing the world with an adult is the best and most enduring learning resource of all.

naturally inspiring childcare kidsunlimited nurseries in: Esher (Hinchley Wood) & Teddington Richmond - Opens in September 2012
Choosing a day nursery for your child Private Day Nurseries
Usually open from 8am to 6pm, day nurseries are a good option for parents that work full time and many take babies from 6 weeks old. Advantages include year-round care, without school holiday breaks and the fact that your child is being looked after by a team of qualified staff. This means that if one staff member is sick, others can cover and you will not be left without childcare.
Top tips for choosing a day nursery:
Start early
It’s fine to enrol your “bump” in a nursery if you feel it’s the right choice. Location Close to home or to work? If your workplace is an hour’s drive away, it may be better for your child to be in a nursery close to home, rather than travelling for two hours a day.
Read the latest Ofsted report It provides detailed information on quality of care, education, cleanliness and opportunities for play. But don’t let it over-influence your decision. Remember it’s a snap shot of the nursery on one particular day and every nursery can have a good or bad one. The important thing is to visit the nursery yourself.
Visit your shortlisted nurseries - and then pay
another visit! A good nursery will welcome as many visits as you need to make. Ask plenty of questions and watch the other
The nursery will be located on Lower Richmond Road. North Sheen train station is just 5 minutes walk away. We are particularly proud of our “New Richmond Park” activity room which will offer the children boundless opportunities to explore, discover and experiment all year around.
children. By doing this, you’ll get an idea of whether it’s the right environment for your child.
What is the “feel” of the nursery? Does it have
a welcoming, happy, cheerful atmosphere? Are the staff enthusiastic and motivated? How engaged are they with the children? Childcare is a difficult job but if nursery staff look stressed and too busy or are not engaging with the children adequately, this could indicate a staffing issue or another underlying problem.
Don’t be blinded by “bells and whistles!” Contemporary
facilities, sophisticated toys and even computer technology are wonderful, but don’t let these blind you to what is really important: the care and attention your child will get from the staff. Daily handover? If you want a daily handover with your child’s key worker, make sure that the nurseries you are considering can oblige. Flexibility Can you swap a day or substitute an afternoon for a morning? You’ll soon discover how useful this is.
Request referees and take up references Nurseries should be happy to give you names of other parents to speak to about the service they provide. Trust your gut instinct You may think it’s primitive but it’s ultimately the most reliable decision-making tool you have!
