FAMILY HEALTH AND WELLBEING EIGHT WAYS TO MANAGE SUGAR CRAVINGS! By Kathleen Farren and Jacky Hems

Over-consumption of sugar contributes to weight gain, diabetes and heart disease. The World Health Organisation is considering halving the recommended daily sugar intake and, in the UK, Action on Sugar, a committee of expert advisers, has been set up to advise on a reduction in the amount of sugar added to foods and soft drinks. Moves are also afoot to improve food labelling to ensure consumers are more aware of the hidden sugar in food. So How Much Sugar Does Food Really Contain? THE BEST WAY TO RUN? By Helen Maguire If you’ve started running or want to start, you are joining one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. But do you know to become a runner? If you are late, you run for the train, but have you ever run for longer than that? How are you going to start running and how will you progress? Broadly, there are three ways: ✸ Just don your trainers and head out ✸ Join a local running group ✸ Join a running program So what’s the difference? If you have run before then you may be comfortable heading out on your own, enjoying the solitude and flexibility of running from your front door step, relaxing and letting your thoughts flow. However, if you find that you always run the same route, at the same speed, it might help to join a local running group or program which offers different types of running sessions, like track sessions, tempo runs, and fartlek training (varying the pace between fast and slow at intervals that suit you). At one of the numerous local running groups, you will meet new people, make new friends and are more likely to go out for that run in the rain if you promised someone else you would! help you improve and you can seek advice about training from seasoned runners. Some running groups are even free! Most have a coach and offer different types of training, ensuring that you continue to progress. For more guidance, feedback on technique, to improve your speed or train for a race, then you may consider joining a running program. These are fun, motivational and are run by a professional running coach who will answer all your queries. Generally they offer different training programs and methods to suit all levels and you may also be taught running strengthening exercises, warming up/cooling down exercises, and breathing techniques. Most individuals haven’t been taught how to run, or seen how they run, so there’s room for improvement in everyone’s style. Whichever approach you take will keep you fit and make you feel good, so figure out what works for you and go with it!

PARENTING

Facing Surgery with Your Child By Justina Gapper

According to figures from the NHS, one in 10 to 15 children are admitted to hospital during their childhood, and for many it can be an overwhelming and frightening experience. For parents, the experience can be equally traumatic. Staying strong for your child so they feel safe, reassured and informed can be difficult when you are floundering and unprepared yourself. This was Tracy’s feeling when her daughter Bronte faced surgery for hip dysplasia and a long recovery in a wheelchair. Tracy admits “We had no idea what to expect, but we managed to get through it somehow. We had to. We had no choice.”

Katy, whose 2 year old needed surgery for a broken arm, describes it as “the worst thing that’s happened to me since having a child – maybe ever. I felt completely powerless and out of control.” Whilst preparing yourself and your child to have surgery is difficult, there are some practical steps you can take to better equip yourself for what’s to come. Many

Bronte Goudsblom at home after surgery

PARENTS OF CHILDREN WHO HAVE HAD SURGERY OFFER THE FOLLOWING ADVICE: Prepare in Advance Tracy recommends writing down any questions you have for your surgeon and discussing these well in advance of surgery, so you are fully prepared. hospitals actively encourage questions pre-surgery so you are aware of the procedure and outcomes, and some encourage a pre-surgery visit so you and your child can become familiar with the ward, theatre and staff. Advice on when and what you say to your child about their impending hospital admission

varies. It is suggested that you broach the subject anything from a week to a day before – depending on their age. Hospitals advise you try to find the balance between providing enough information to make your child comfortable, and giving them too many details that may overwhelm, confuse or scare them.

Know the Possible Outcomes Do you understand the possible outcomes – positive and negative? For example, you may be asked to sign a consent form declaring you understand the risks of the surgery. One mum found this an unexpected shock.

Tracy recalls telling her 4 year old daughter about her surgery the day before. “At first Bronte was very upset. But after we explained to her that there would be an unlimited supply of ice cream and treats, she seemed to warm to the idea. We attempted to make the experience sound more like an adventure than something daunting, but at the same time answering any questions or concerns she had.”

Prepare for Your Child’s Distress Many children are very distressed being put under or coming round from anaesthetic, but most don’t remember this “transition” period. Some hospitals don’t call parents into the recovery room until their child is fully awake, which can be upsetting for parents who expect to be there straightaway, so ask the hospital about its procedure.

Parents whose children have had multiple operations recall things they did differently which made the second and subsequent occasions easier. Nicole, whose daughter needed two operations, recalls “The first time I was in pieces and didn’t eat all. The second time I made sure I ate and drank and when my daughter went under, I left the hospital and sat in the park with a coffee and a book for 30 minutes to keep it together. It was still an awful day, but I felt much calmer than the first time.” Speaking to other parents who have been through similar experiences is also helpful, but Tracy also wished she had had access to support group. One such organisation that offers support to families with children in hospital is The Wallace and Gromit Foundation (www.wallaceandgromitfoundation.org) 6

www.familiesuponthames.co.uk

Take a Break Whilst instinct tells you not to leave your child, it’s important you look after yourself too. Give yourself 10 minutes to walk round the block or have a cup of tea in a café. Bring Familiar Objects from Home Try to bring some familiar things from home into the hospital, such as toys, games, or comfort blankets. Stick with routines your children love – such as reading a favourite bed time story. Seek Advice from Other Children Tracy said it really helped that Bronte had friends that had been in hospital and could talk to them about their experiences. March-April 2014

By Justina Gapper

From the moment they are born, twins bring with them a unique set of parenting challenges. As babies, these are mainly practical, as parents juggle feeds, changes and sleeps. As twins grow and develop as individuals, other issues come to the fore. They may start to compete for the attention and affection of their parents. Parents may also find themselves comparing their twins. Whilst these problems can arise with any siblings, they can be more intense and trickier with twins. So how do parents address these issues? One-to-One Attention Parents of twins quickly realise they cannot give each child the one-to-one attention they would like. Twins often sleep, eat and play at the same time and in the same room. As they get older, they become expert at monitoring whether they are getting the same attention as their twin and are constantly competing and finding ways of muscling in on any one-to-one time parents set aside. This can leave parents feeling that each twin is missing out, or conversely, longing for some time alone with each of them. Competing for one-to-one time may lead to conflict between twins or poor behaviour, as one or both discover they get more attention by “acting out.” One mum I spoke to reported feeling guilty about the lack of time she spends

Australia’s largest

multi-sport & exercise

with one twin who will happily entertain himself, whilst she meets the needs of his more demanding sister. The best way to ensure one-to-one time with each individual twin is to get your partner, a friend or a relative to look after the other. However, this isn’t always practical if you are on your own, or if your time together as a family is limited. Carolyn Graham, Honorary Consultant for Educational Psychology for the Twins and Multiple Births Association (TAMBA) in London reports “Parents feel very guilty that they can’t do one-to-one. However, the key thing to remember is it doesn’t have to be a day, or even half an hour. Just five minutes of quality time is enough.” One-to-one conversations can count as quality time, says Carolyn, herself a mum of identical boy twins. “When I picked my boys up from school I used to ask “how was your day?” only to be met with blank faces as they didn’t know which of them I was addressing. Now I ask each one individually to tell me something good that’s happened.” Clever Ways to Achieve One-to-One Time ✸ Get twins to help you with household jobs. Assign each with a different role, for instance, one twin helps you with the recycling, whilst the other folds the sheets. The role is theirs alone and you can make each feel special and important. ✸ Fit in one-to-one conversations or short plays at intervals throughout the day. ✸ Organise childcare separately, so that whilst one twin is being looked after, you can have the other with you. Comparing and Competing It is almost impossible to avoid comparing your twins. Twin parents may feel annoyed when relatives, friends and teachers do this, even whilst inadvertently or even unconsciously comparing their achievements, milestones, behaviour and academic merits themselves. Even identical twins may learn to walk, speak, ride a bike and enjoy certain games at different times, and, whilst it is commonly believed that identical twins are more likely to have similar interests and achievements, in a girl/boy paring, girls usually develop at a faster

PARENTING

The Challenges of Parenting Twins

rate. It’s important to realise that whilst one twin may do something more quickly, the other may not actually be behind the norm. Avoid trying to encourage or motivate twins by comparing them. For example “Look at your brother, he can put his shoes on, what about you?” This can lead to resentment, anger and even low self-esteem. Carolyn advises looking only at the progression of each twin as an individual or comparing them with their peer group, but not with each other. “If one is more academic, find something about the other that you can praise, for example, a personality trait” she advises. Helping Twins Feel Good about Themselves ✸ Encourage each twin to spend time away from the other, doing things they are good at and enjoy. ✸ Remind each child of their own achievements and interests. ✸ Don’t compare twins in front of them. ✸ When twins are sharing the same activity, try to praise each for different things. Getting your child to eat a varied and healthy diet can be challenging, frustrating and hugely emotive for parents.

family food&nutrition

The Dinner Table Wars!

There’s nothing more disheartening than putting lots of effort into creating a nutritious, tasty meal and having it criticised or flatly rejected, and there’s little that undermines a parent’s peace of mind more than a child who seems to not be eating well. Arguments, bribery, pleading and complete stand-offs are common in many households as parents desperately try to get their children to eat. Often parents find themselves stuck in the bind of offering an increasingly limited and less nutritious repertoire of foods at the expense of new or healthier foods, because these are the only ones that their children will eat. More guilt and frustration follow. Registered Dietitian, Sarah Danaher, believes the pressure around healthy eating is worse today because modern parents are so aware of the health benefits of correct nutrition. Nutritional Therapist, Clare Jeffries agrees.“It’s easy for parents to become fixated upon optimising their children’s intake of the right foods” she says. Both firmly advocate eating meals together as a family, familiarising kids with different foods, and not blaming yourself if your child won’t eat them! Only through repeated exposure and gentle encouragement, rather than insistence and threats, will cautious eaters broaden their range. It’s natural for children to be cautious about new foods particularly the bitter taste of most vegetables.

SETTLING IN YOUR NANNY By Kathryn Ginn

Leaving your baby or child with a nanny for the first time can be daunting and it’s normal to feel anxious! However, if you can settle in your nanny well and establish a strong rapport, the transition will be more relaxed for you all, alleviating your anxieties. Once a Nanny is Appointed ✸ Talk to older children about the fun things they will do with your nanny. ✸ Organise for your nanny to visit or do some babysitting to start getting to know your child. ✸ Arrange your nanny’s start date one week before you need to leave your child with her. Two Weeks before Your Nanny Starts Work ✸ Start a nanny diary, a key communication tool, which you and your nanny can use to keep each other updated on the day-to-day detail of your child’s life. ✸ Start by using it to communicate information such as contact details, medical information, daily routines, diet, likes/dislikes, and house rules. Your Nanny’s First Day ✸ Plan a quiet day during which your nanny “shadows” you. ✸ Demonstrate confidence in her – your children will settle more easily. ✸ Don’t use the nanny to do household jobs – do them yourself

and give your child and your nanny time alone. ✸ Demonstrate how to use appliances and operate security systems.

extra

D-Day! Nanny’s First Day Without You Your nanny should be feeling confident, comfortable with your children and clear about your expectations. YOU may feel less calm, but try to avoid communicating this to your child. Smile, if you can, and don’t get embroiled if your child struggles to let you go. Make it clear that their new friend, your nanny, will look after them, kiss and say goodbye. You’ll be home soon.

Good luck!

visited the newest restaurant. They have reclaimed a precious part of themselves and are enjoying adult time again! The advantage of using a babysitting agency is that it is the agency’s job, not yours, to find a local babysitter that suits you, to carry out background checks and interviews, and check references on your behalf. Unlike leaving your precious children with a neighbour’s 16 year old daughter, a friend of a friend, or even an older relative, you can rest assured that your youngsters will be in the safest possible hands. Good agencies such as Like Minders offer advice on using a babysitter for the first time, give tips to nervous parents and take time to match families with experienced,

professional and local childcarers. They will also outline the sitter’s experience and send over their details to parents before making the booking, to ensure parents are comfortable and can contact the babysitter directly, if they want to have a chat. Once parents have a bank of local, trusted babysitters, they can feel secure enough to enjoy a much needed break. This must be a cost that is worth every penny!

AN INSPECTOR CALLS!

Olivia Malaure talks to local nursery provider, Sangeeta Gardiner, about her role and responsibilities as an Inspector for the Office of Standards in Education (Ofsted). Most parents are unlikely to choose a nursery or pre-school for their children without at least a cursory glance at the setting’s Ofsted report. But how many of us actually know how settings are inspected or even what the acronym Ofsted stands for? Sangeeta Gardiner has been an Ofsted Inspector since Ofsted started in1992 and has conducted over 150 inspections of nurseries, pre-schools, and child-minders. Becoming and remaining an inspector requires rigorous, ongoing training and examinations, meaning that Ofsted Inspectors are very knowledgeable. One of the key things an Inspector examines is how a setting safeguards the children in its care. Inspectors check to make sure safeguarding policies are implemented, that staff have the relevant legal background checks, and have been properly recruited “I’ll ask staff members how they got their jobs” reports Sangeeta. “Being a friend of a friend is simply not good enough. “I also probe

more deeply if I discover staff members have moved around a lot.” Checking safeguarding arrangements also involves monitoring how children enter and leave the setting and what provisions there are for visitors. “It’s also important that children are being taught how to keep themselves safe” comments Sangeeta. “For example, they need to know that it’s dangerous to walk while holding a pair of scissors.” Changes in the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) framework place more emphasis on the importance of a child’s emotional security, so Inspectors also observe how confident and secure children feel in their environment and in their interactions with others. Early Year’s Education is all about learning through play but the word “teaching” is still used in the EYFS framework. Staff “teach” children about their world by asking them open ended questions.“I observe the language teachers use and how they’re interacting with a child” says Sangeeta.” I’ll ask staff why they have chosen a particular activity and how it contributes to a child’s learning. Ofsted Inspectors also observe children and then question the Key Person of those children about them. “If a child is upset, the Key Person should be able to tell me about the child’s circumstances, for instance, if they are new to the setting” says Sangeeta. “There should also be information about a child’s development, and planning for a child’s next steps.” So what happens if there are issues with teaching methods? A lot depends on whether the majority of staff are working positively, and, where there are staff who are performing less well, that the manager of the setting recognises this.“Part of the inspection is a joint observation with the manager” says Sangeeta. ”If a staff member has set up an activity that hasn’t worked well and the manager isn’t aware of this, that needs to be addressed. However, if the manager is aware

and can support a staff member to improve their skills, then this provides good evidence that the nursery is working well towards improving its provision.” Sangeeta owns Windsor Kindergarten, which has two settings in Twickenham. How does she ensure they meet Ofsted’s high standards? Good communication and reflective practice are vital. As a team, each setting regularly fills out a self-evaluation form, so that everybody involved can reflect on what works and what doesn’t, and a clear direction can be formulated. Sangeeta is always aware of what is happening at each nursery, but also stresses that the quality of her managers and teachers is exceptional. “The managers of my settings are experience and well-established members of the team, and have known many of the children and their families for a number of years.”

WHAT MAKES A GOOD NURSERY OR PRE-SCHOOL? By Justina Gapper

at all times.” Leah cites a number of other features which she feels contribute to Playtime’s success and of which parents take note of when choosing a nursery or pre-school: Good Team of Staff Recruiting the right staff and ensuring they work closely as a team is crucial to the success of a setting. As Playtime Staines, Leah is able to work in the main part of the nursery, as opposed to being tied to her office. This allows her to work closely with her staff, giving them support at different times of the day. Communication Communication between key workers and parents is a number one priority. Leah and her team work closely with parents to help new children settle, provide daily feedback, send weekly emails, use Facebook and Twitter, and hold key worker updates and meetings to inform parents about what is happening. Playtime Nurseries also use Home-Link Books which help parents understand what their

Safety Parents need to know their children are completely safe. For complete peace of mind, for example, Playtime Staines has installed CCTV and telecoms on each of its entrances to ensure secure access. Thinking Ahead to School It is important to understand what kind of process and support system a nursery has in place for transitioning children to school. Leah says that Playtime Nurseries provide transition reports for schools, based on seven areas of learning, which give teachers a detailed account of the child that will be joining them. Teachers are also invited to visit children at the setting before they start school. For more information on Playtime Nurseries, visit www.playtimenurseries.com

When choosing a nursery or pre-school, most parents base their decision on a combination of personal recommendation, the vibe of the setting, how much they like the staff and the setting’s Ofsted report and rating. Playtime Nurseries has recently capitalised on the success of its well-established nursery in Shepperton by opening another nursery in Staines. A testament to the quality and good practice of its Shepperton nursery is Ofsted’s note that it was just a three points away from achieving an Outstanding rating. Leah Hannon, who manages the newly-opened Playtime Staines, and previously worked at Shepperton, comments that parents find Ofsted reports useful and the recommendations given at an inspection provide nurseries with practical guidance and goals towards which to work. However, she stresses that “Everything Ofsted is looking at - such as the quality of care and supervision should be delivered by the nursery

children have been learning at nursery and suggest small, achievable, fun activities that parents can do with their children to support their learning. Structure and Routine To feel safe, children need routine, so it is important that staff are able to maintain this. Treating Each Child and Parent Differently Settling a child into nursery or pre-school can be a very stressful and anxious experience for both parent and child. Not all children are the same, so settings should, where possible, be flexible enough to adjust their procedures to suit each child. Leah adds “Each parent is different too. Some parents find separation more difficult than others and may require some extra support.”

Local mum and owner of Little Pickle Parties, Tamara Melvin has the kind of entrepreneurial spirit that can make something out of almost anything. Little Pickle Parties specialises in face painting and balloon modelling for children’s parties. “I started face painting at my children’s school fete and decided to turn it into a business” Tamara reports “So I stayed up late one night and designed a logo and some face painting designs.” With that same drive and self-belief, Tamara recently found herself sewing on the set of the Great British Sewing Bee, a BBC 2 reality television show in which amateur seamstresses compete to be named ‘Britain’s Best Home Sewer.’ Tamara says ‘I watched the first series of the Great British Sewing Bee and thought “I can do that!” I have a passion for sewing handmade crafts from vintage and reusable materials so I described this in my application and sent it in. I was delighted when the casting director called and invited me to audition!” The Sewing Bee challenges

were all different and Tamara had never heard of some of the techniques the contestants were expected to try. “I have the sewing machine up on the kitchen worktop and sew whilst I’m cooking the kids’ tea” says Tamara. “I’m good at multi-tasking, but answering questions, being directed and sewing simultaneously was very challenging. As soon as you take your stitch unpicker out, the cameras are on you!” The ‘sewing gene’ has been passed down in Tamara’s family for three generations. She has been sewing herself for 30 years and now deploys her creative eye and steady hand to make beautiful custom-made party bags which are available from her website. She will also soon be offering party costumes made from recycled materials. For more information on Little Pickle Parties, visit www.littlepickleparties.co.uk

it’s party time How to Throw a Party for the Over 7s We asked Juliet from party-planning company, Bedazzled Events, to give us some tips Throwing parties for older children can be tricky when they have outgrown balloon modelling and traditional party games. Here are a few different and imaginative ideas you might want to consider. For a fast-paced, fun-filled two hours, an Army Assault Course Party, including mini challenges, is great for large groups. This style of party encourages children to be energetic, work in teams and engages them in fun problem solving. It’s easily created indoors and outdoors. You could consider hiring a hall which will allow plenty of room for children to take on the challenges safely. If you are planning a party in the warmer months, an assault course can be set up in the garden. Prizes for all the teams keep it fun and light-hearted and not too competitive! For kids who love explosions and enjoy getting messy, without the rough and tumble of the Army Assault Course, a Science Laboratory Party is another option. Children can get inventive making rockets fly, watching experiments bubble and exploring

extra

the wonders of science. Once the kids have let off steam, a themed craft or cooking activity gives children an opportunity to recharge and express their creative side. Remember to keep it simple and make sure there are plenty of adults to supervise. Of course, craft or cooking parties are alternative party themes in their own right too, and perfect for arty children or those that love to cook. A Vintage Tea Party is wonderful for those children who already love to sit around a table chatting! Decorate the table beautifully including individual place names, welcome guests with a fun mocktail as they arrive, and are shown to their seat. Children will love feeling grown up and being made to feel special. You may like to add an activity such as making jewellery. The items the kids create can then be taken home as an alternative to a party bag. For a super-girly option a Pamper Parlour Party can be created at home or at a salon. Children can enjoy a glamorous hair do or blow dry and perhaps some nail art or glitter transfers. Once “pampered”, children can enjoy either a mini-disco or perhaps walk the catwalk taking part in a fun fashion show. Older children will be used to receiving party bags, so perhaps choose one high quality gift instead; for example, a paint your own pirate ship kit or jewellery box. For a more personal touch, the gift can be finished with a ribbon and label. As children get older the number of guests they want to invite to a party usually starts to decrease, meaning your budget per head can be more generous. So you can afford the personal touches that will really make your child’s party really stand out.

The Value of Pocket Money

By Justina Gapper

Ever asked yourself when you should start giving your child pocket money, how much and under what circumstances? You are probably not alone. The latest Pocket Money Index stats from Roosterbank. com reveal the average amount of pocket money now given is £3.69 a week (figures from August to November 2013), varying from £1.70 at age 3 to £5.61 at age 13. Anecdotal evidence from local parents suggests the weekly amount for those under age 10 ranges from 50p to £2 a week. Some children start receiving pocket money as young as the age of 3, with children who have older siblings tending to receive it earlier! Some parents develop 14

a sliding scale for different ages of siblings; others give the same amount to all. The majority of parents seem to give pocket money as a reward, incentive or to reinforce good behaviour. “It’s an incentive for them to do things that they need encouragement to do” says one mum. Others give pocket money for jobs such as looking after younger siblings, cleaning, washing dishes, vacuuming or gardening. But can pocket money help children understand the value of money? Most children just want “instant gratification” and spend their cash on sweets of cheap toys. Encouraging children to save up for something they really like teaches them about choices, value and consequences, although these can be hard concepts for younger children to grasp. One mum of an 8 year old and 5 year old boy reports “My eldest has a good idea of how much is in his money box, but the younger one doesn’t have a clue.” However, another says that her 7 and 9 year old sons “have even been known to pool

www.familiesuponthames.co.uk

resources to buy something they both want and can share.” Pocket money can also help children to begin to understand the difference between saving at home in a piggy bank and earning interest by putting money into a savings account.

You certainly can’t underestimate your children’s understanding of the power of money, as one mum recently discovered with her 7 year old son. “He’s been getting £1 a week but has just negotiated an increase to £1.50!” she smiles. www.rosemountfs.co.uk

ATHELSTAN HOUSE PRIORITISES PHYSICAL ACTIVITY! The continuing focus on raising the profile of physical activity at Athelstan House School In Hampton saw the recent launch of a new Creative Movement After-School Club. This latest initiative means there is now a physical activity available to pupils at the School every day of the week.

Children from Reception class onwards have weekly swimming at Hurst Pool. By the time they go on to their next schools at age 7, with three years of swimming lessons under their belts, they can all swim independently, with the majority also swimming with

confidence. Specialist teacher, Kay Gillespie, offers weekly PE lessons for all children and is passionate about laying the foundations of a healthy active lifestyle in the early years. The new Creative Movement Club joins Playball and Yoga to form a trio of extra-curricular activities available to those parents wishing to make physical activity a daily part of their child’s life.

STAINES PREP ENJOYS A MODERN ART DAY

Year 4 students at Staines Prep recently travelled up to London to visit the Tate Modern Art Gallery. This was a new experience for the majority of the year group.  During the day, children visited the Paul Klee Exhibition and looked at his paintings of the 1920’s and 1930’s. These works showed a wide variety of styles and techniques, from abstract cube-like work to comic

line drawings. Students also saw Surreal works by Picasso, Salvador Dali and many other artists. at the Tate’s Poetry and Dreams Exhibition. Year 4 found their day interesting and thought-provoking and thoroughly embraced the learning opportunities on offer.

Pupils at Denmead School in Hampton received a wonderful Christmas present at the end of last term when the Governing Body was given planning permission to improve the Prep Department facilities at Gloucester Road. The present accommodation has long been in need of a facelift, and preliminary work can now commence to replace the current buildings. The improvements will provide more functional accommodation in line with up-to-date educational requirements, bringing the buildings to a level commensurate with the standard of work that takes place within! Once completed, the existing portacabin-style classrooms will be removed making space for a

multi-purpose outdoor games surface, adventure-style play area and some staff parking, to help traffic flow in the road. It is anticipated that the project will begin within the next few months and that the new accommodation will be ready for occupancy from the beginning of the academic year commencing September 2015.

WHAT MAKES A SCHOOL OUTSTANDING?

EDUCATION FOCUS SPRING 2014 Outstanding Options

Ofsted judges schools on five criteria: achievement and progress, teaching, behaviour and safety, leadership and management and overall effectiveness. But how do the best schools deliver this?

By Linda Stone, Editor

TRAFALGAR INFANT SCHOOL, TWICKENHAM

ESHER CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL

Mrs Thompson, Head Teacher at Trafalgar Infant School believes that children achieve and makes progress when their individual needs are met. ”We spend hours talking about the social, emotional and learning development of our pupils. So, when issues arise, we can help them quickly and effectively” she comments. Key to confidence and self-esteem, both crucial for learning, is finding at least one thing that each child is really good at – not necessarily academically. Mrs Thompson cites the School’s “listening friends” scheme, as an example.“Listening friends” are emotionally literate youngsters who are coached, supervised and supported to listen to children who, for whatever reason, need to talk.“A child may make a great “listening friend” even if they are not so good at reading or writing yet” says Mrs Thompson.“This gives them the confidence to keep trying at other things.” One of Trafalgar’s strengths is its emphasis on cross-curricula learning which truly rewards and engages its pupils.“Ofsted reported that they thought our curriculum was very exciting and interesting” says Mrs Thompson.“Of course, we

James Chapman, parent and School Governor of Esher Church of England Primary School describes the sources of the School’s strength as “a visionary Head Teacher and dedicated staff, who all push the boundaries in terms of their commitment to the School,” and “a great working partnership with the School’s governing body, plus engaged and involved parents.” Exciting and innovative learning methods are a priority at the School. These include a “Mental Maths Challenge,” in which pupils have 90 seconds to answer 30 mental arithmetic questions. Different levels of achievement are attainable, and there are rewards such as stickers and graded badges.“The School is very focussed on achieving success in mathematics” reports James.“My son loves these challenges.” In literacy, children become actively engaged with learning to spell by self-selecting the words they would like to learn, within a range that supports their phonics learning. To give children the opportunity to accelerate their personal learning at their own pace, from Reception, children are organised into Booster Groups, based on need, which supplement their learning in class. Physical learning includes swimming instruction in

teach the fundamental skills of reading, writing and maths, but, at the same time, children use and apply these skills to discover about topics such as the Great Fire of London, electricity or healthy eating.” Mrs Thompson and her staff are passionate about Early Years Education.“An Infant School offers something very special and different to a Primary School” she says.“Children have the chance to be “leaders” at an early age, to mentor younger children and to take on responsibilities that are often reserved for older children in a Primary School.” She emphasises the importance of utilising and developing all the skills of her staff. “Their professional development is of paramount importance. We have a staff member dedicated to researching training options. If we are going to successfully open doors for our children, we need to open doors for our staff too.”

the School’s pool for all children throughout the summer term and during the first half of the autumn term. The School embraces a community ethos. Classes within each year are reconfigured at the end of Reception, Year 2 and Year 4. “This means children socialise with all the children in their year group, encountering a range of different communication styles and personalities” reports James. The School has also prioritised its Anti-Bullying Charter and runs regular workshops for younger and older pupils. Parents play a pivotal role in the community too, successfully raising an average of £20,000 a year for extra resources. Constantly looking forward, the School is currently moving towards gaining Academy status.“The additional control this will give the School over funding and the curriculum will ensure it can continue to offer the best level of education for its pupils”says James.

SPECIAL GUEST AUTHOR CELEBRATES BOOK WEEK AT TWICKENHAM PREP

Jan Fearnley, award-winning author/ illustrator of titles such as “Mr Wolf’s Pancakes” and “The Baby Dragon Tamer” brought the magical world of her books to Twickenham Prep recently to celebrate World Book Week. All the children in Pre-Prep dressed up as their favourite Jan Fearnley character, with some very imaginative and creative interpretations! The staff joined them as the “Jaggedy Dagger” monster character. Jan spent the day with the

children sharing her stories, creating puppets of the Flittermouse, and signing books. She also captivated children with a special reading of “Light Fingered Harry,” her humorous new story about an octopus who can’t stop stealing, due for publication in June. Other Book Week activities included shared reading, voting for a favourite bed-time story or author, a silent reading session, and, for Year 7 boys, an assembly about the delights of reading.

LEARN ENGLISH THE WISE WAY! If you are a parent or carer of children, and English is not your mother tongue, you will probably need to improve your English skills to better communicate with your offspring or those children in your care. Last autumn saw the opening of the new Weybridge International School of English (WISE), a vibrant and unique adult learning centre which welcomes students of all nationalities, wishing to learn and improve their English. Students are already speaking highly of the level of tuition they are receiving at the school. “I only have good thoughts about working with Rowan. She is very patient and kind and not too pushy. She helps me when I get stuck” says Katie Overd. Its small, friendly classes cover all aspect of learning English, including speaking, reading,

listening, writing, grammar and pronunciation. Classes for Lower Intermediate, Intermediate and Higher Intermediate Levels are all available, and students can study for English qualifications like First Certificate, Certificate of Advanced English and IELTS. WISE also offers one-to-one tuition. “We are always adding new classes” says Rowan Johnson, co-proprietor of WISE. “We have just introduced classes for beginners, a conversation class, and an IELTS class for more advanced learners.”

HALLIFORD STUDENTS PRESENT SHAKESPEARE EXTRAVAGANZA!

Halliford School in Shepperton recently presented its annual Year 8 Shakespeare Extravaganza. Each class performed selected scenes from their chosen play over three nights to parents, teachers and students. Audiences were treated to excerpts from Hamlet, set in a dystopian future world, Much Ado About Nothing, based in the 1920s, and King Lear, in a traditional Shakespearian context.

The Shakespeare Extravaganza is a showcase of the work undertaken by Year 8 boys in English and Drama during the autumn term. In English, they study the plots, characters and themes of their set plays, whilst in Drama they rehearse for the performances. Headmaster Philip Cottam said ‘This is just one of many exciting co-curricular events that we offer at Halliford. We are extremely proud of our Creative Arts program, as well as our sporting and academic achievements.”

THE SCHOOL “WHERE SMALL IS SPECIAL” The day my daughter started school was a momentous one for me. I remember vividly the discomfort of my own first day, my separation anxiety and the misery of my early school life, at a time when schools were not much interested in caring for the emotional needs of their pupils. I wanted the polar opposite experience for my daughter. I wanted her to say goodbye happily, run smiling into school, and report excitedly how much she enjoyed it when she got home. Four months into her school life, my daughter does indeed love going to school. She loves HER school and talks of Athelstan House with pride. But this wasn’t the case at the start. The turnaround is a testament to the nurturing, caring, emotionallyattuned staff and teachers at Athelstan who have held her hand, metaphorically and physically, to their education.“Children only through the early roller coaster start school once, so it is vital that days, helping her manage her it is a positive, happy experience. anxieties and opening up for her Joining us isn’t just about starting an exciting new world of learning. school, it is about becoming part Athelstan House, a of the “Athelstan family” says co-educational pre-prep school Deputy Head, Jill Chatt-Collins. in Hampton is a truly unique Athelstan has a long track school. well as a nursery and pre-school), and with a maximum class size of 12 to 15 students, Athelstan House has a class teacher and allocated teaching assistant for each class at all times, making its staff to child teaching ratio about 1 teacher for every 6 children. This is one of the highest ratios of any school in the Richmond borough and means more attention for each child. “The greater the one-to-one attention the faster the progress” says parent, Ruth Dupuy. There’s extra help with reading too, ensuring that all children read one-to-one with an adult daily.

The result is that, at Year 2, children at Athelstan are reading independently at least a year or two, sometimes more, beyond their chronological age. Athelstan’s small size also means that children mix across the year groups, allowing quality interactions with both older and younger children.“I love that my daughter has been a part of the whole school experience from day one” says Rachael Vaughan. Employing an impressive number of specialist teachers, including for PE, drama and science, the School offers children from Reception onwards weekly swimming lessons and the chance to learn both French and Spanish, starting with singing and playing language games and moving to more formal lessons by Year 2. The School prides itself on being approachable and accessible. “Parents know that they can talk to us at any time” reports Jill. “In this way we can deal with issues and problems as they arise.” “I love that I can call or email during the day if I’m concerned about my children” reports Karen Dorey. “A staff member will even go to the class and check they are okay.” Staff at Athelstan give generously of their time in advising parents PROGRESS TUTORING AND on their next choice of school and have an EDUCATIONAL AGENCY impressive ability to match We recommend current and experienced individual children to an qualified teachers/tutors for 1-1 tuition in your environment in which home or in the tutors home. CLAREMONT FAN COURT HOLDS NURSERY WORKSHOP The Pre-Nursery and Nursery classes at Claremont Fan Court School in Esher were recently propelled into space by the Freshwater Company, in a magical, activity-based workshop. Using music, exploration and creative expression, the children were encouraged to create a lunar landscape. Equipped with a hunter’s kit they used all their senses to investigate the universe, collecting clues and creating a delightful story. Anna, aged 4, reported “He was an adventurer and there were lots of things to hunt for and we went in a cave, and in a tunnel, and up a flower mountain.” The Pre-Nursery were prepared to launch skywards too, having

created their own moons, painted star numbers and rockets. The lunar theme was inspired by the costumes worn during the children’s debut stage performance last December, which delighted proud parents and grandparents. “Our youngest children were captivated for the entire one hour workshop and thoroughly absorbed by their big adventure” said Mrs Louise Fox, Head of Pre-Preparatory and Nursery.

NOTRE DAME HOSTS CAREERS FAIR

Notre Dame School in Cobham recently hosted a Careers Fair at which parents, past pupils and friends of Notre Dame discussed their own careers with pupils in Years 10 to 13. This was a marvellous opportunity for the girls to hear from people involved in medicine, teaching, engineering, graphics, design, architecture, finance, nursing, psychology, media, catering, HR, law, marketing, business and

many other professions. Past pupils included former Notre Dame girls Sarah Hadley and Hannah Evans. The highly successful event was attended by over 200 hundred people and all the pupils who attended reported finding it very informative and interesting. The event was organised by Ellie Ha, Head of Careers, and parents Penny Wakefield and Helen Hamill, and was supported by over 40 volunteers, representing more than 26 professions.

ST MICHAEL STEINER SCHOOL INTRODUCES INTERNATIONAL STEINER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE

Students at the St Michael Steiner High School in Hanworth have been studying the International Steiner School Certificate (ISSC) since September 2013. Assessment tasks have been set in English, History, Chemistry and Maths. The Humanities subjects often require students to be

assessed by “producing formal writing” through which they learn how to do research, develop questions, find relevant information, and use the APA referencing system to cite sources used. Other assessments, such as Chemistry and Maths, are carried out through tests, as teachers feel this is more appropriate for these subjects. There are also ongoing programs in German and French, Craft, Art, Eurythmy, Bothmer Gymnastics and Music that will be assessed by tests, portfolio, exhibition and/or presentation later in the year. The ISSC works with the curriculum already developed by the School for its students and gives teachers the flexibility to assess students in the way they consider most appropriate.

THAMES CHRISTIAN COLLEGE LEAPS INTO THE CLOUD! Pupils at Thames Christian College are enjoying super-fast internet access thanks to the recent upgrade of its dedicated fibre-optic connection. This speed increase supports the School’s move to the Google Cloud platform which allows pupils access to their files from computers anywhere, consigning memory sticks to history! The document-sharing capabilities of the Cloud pave the way for new levels of collaborative learning, further supported by the purchase of Samsung Chromebooks for staff and student use. With a start-up time of 8 seconds these neat, lightweight laptops have transformed IT usage in the School’s classrooms. The Google

platform opens up phenomenal educational advantages upon which the School will capitalize in the coming years, as well as driving down its long-term costs, thus helping to keep fees competitive. The Google platform is augmented by a suite of Macbook Pros equipped with software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut, Logic and Sibelius for use in Art, Music and Computing.

adult education

LESSONS FOR GROWN UPS Education isn’t just for the young. By Linda Stone, Editor To lead fulfilling lives, adults need to continue to grow and develop, learning new skills and enhancing existing ones. Adult education can help parents enhance employment prospects, indulge a passion, satisfy a budding interest or enhance the education of their children. Parents, Jacquie and Matt wanted to learn something new together. “We’d hardly done anything together since having children,” said Jacquie. “We were looking for something fun that would give us couple time too.” They opted for a Ballroom and Latin American Dance course at Molesey Adult Learning Centre. “In just 10 weeks we learnt the basic steps to the Waltz, Jive and Quick Step,” reports Matt. “Wendy, our tutor, is fantastic. Ballroom is really modern and fun – very unlike Come Dancing!” Surrey Adult Learning has an amazing range of courses on offer at centres in Esher, Molesey, Sunbury and Runnymede,” reports Jacquie.

Jenny has also taken a number of courses with Surrey Adult Learning, most recently a Greek language course. “Our family recently bought a holiday home in Crete,” she reports. “I realised that learning the language would be invaluable. The course was brilliant. Learning a new alphabet was challenging, but worth the effort in being able to speak the language abroad. Our tutor injected fun into the classes and helped me gain confidence in conversation.” Overall, Jenny reports being “incredibly impressed” with the standard of teaching on Surrey Adult Learning courses. Adult education also proves vital resources for many local migrant parents. Rubina Bhatti’s Family Learning Course with Surrey Adult Learning literally changed her life and those of her children. “I learnt about the religious and cultural days and festivals celebrated here. I’d been here for 6 years, but I knew nothing of these. I also didn’t understand the education system or how to

enter working life. Now I can talk to people about these topics.” When the Bhatti family began the course, Rubina’s youngest son, Sulaiman, had a speech difficulty and very low confidence. “When we started learning together, everybody noticed subtle changes in him,” reports Rubina. “To enhance his learning, I showed him

extra

the different websites our course teacher had shown me. Recently he got a Head Teacher Award for his phonics work! I also helped my middle son prepare for the test which got him a place at Reigate Grammar School. I’ve been able to help my kids succeed mainly through the knowledge and confidence I got from this course.“

Surrey Adult Learning has around 1000 courses available each term daytime, evenings and weekends, from one day ‘taster’ sessions to term-long courses. Courses include GCSEs, (including FREE English and Maths), art and craft, furniture restoration, fitness, languages, cookery, computing, photography and interior design. New London Museum Launches in Kew! Welcome to The London Museum of Water and Steam By Justina Gapper

Children can delve deep into the secret history of London’s water supply with the launch in March of the London Museum of Water and Steam in Kew. A £2.3m overhaul has transformed the old Kew Bridge Steam Museum into a “must-see” London tourist attraction and exciting family day out. The water pumping station at Kew pumped clean water around London in Victorian times and played a vital role in cleaning London’s water supply when thousands of people were dying of cholera from dirty water. It has always been a significant historical attraction, housing some of the world’s rarest working steam engines still in their original location.

Now a range of interactive exhibits and activities has repositioned this undiscovered gem into a bona fide Museum. It’s well worth the trip south west from the city to see elements that will captivate and educate children, as they learn about the history of London’s water supply. From the moment children enter the Museum they’ll be taken on a journey through time, descending deep down under a floating city of London, passing and touching a timeline of pipes which starts at the Roman era, and discovering how water has been used by London residents throughout the 19th century. There will be plenty to touch, feel and play with as children

crawl through tunnels, turn and pull pumps, and become scientists as they examine and compare clean and dirty water in laboratories from the Victorian era and the present time, which demonstrate the different techniques for purifying water. Interactive exhibits will reveal how much water a typical British child uses compared to a boy in Africa and other parts of the world. Children will also experience the sights and sounds of a real sewer as they discover what lies beneath the streets of London. Museum Director, Penny Jenkins says “The Kew Bridge Steam Museum always attracted many enthusiasts, but the new London Museum of Water and Steam has been designed to cater for families. It’s a fun, fascinating hands-on experience that will teach children about the history of London’s water supply. There are lots of bells, whistles and buttons to press!” Traditionally more popular in the winter months, the new Museum launches as an “all-weather” location with plenty to keep the kids busy outside during the warmer months. More outdoor space is available, including water play in an exciting Splashzone. This features two giant water pumps with which children can move water from one end of the water system to the other, via a series of pumps, levers, sluices and gates. At weekends children can ride on London’s only steam locomotive narrow-gauge

engine outside the Museum, and, on special event weekends, see a Victorian steam fire engine in action. The Museum will also hold regular Steam Up weekends and days. A number of the awe-inspiring original engines will be fired up, with the giant machines in action at the end of each month – an experience not to be missed, promises Penny. During school holidays, families can enjoy themed activities and this Easter, there will be an Easter Egg Hunt, plus Easter-themed art and craft. The Museum will also be available to hire for birthday parties. The Museum is destined to become a place which families visit regularly. An annual ticket costs just £1 more than the already reasonably priced day ticket and is available for £12.50 per adult and £6 per child age 5 to 11. So it makes complete sense to buy one and drop in for an hour or two whenever you like. There’s on-site parking and a light, airy new café situated at the entrance to the Museum, with working pumps and historical artefacts cleverly incorporated into the space. Penny says “In the café, the children will see and hear the pumps working - it’ll be an exciting experience and they’ll know they’re in an old water works.” The Museum will have something for family members of all ages. “It will make a perfect cross-generational family day out. Grandparents can recall the age of steam, babies can crawl through the tunnels and children can enjoy the interactive exhibits” comments Penny.

If you’re looking for some indoor activity and would like to grab a coffee, head to The Hobblings Play Barn. But don’t expect to sit there for long, as the children drag you into the impressive soft play area, with its shooting cannons, tunnels and slides. Crawl into the tunnels and pop up in a secret and hidden location in the shop – no one there will know you are watching them and the children will love it! Easter activities are running over the holiday and are included in the admission price.

The Pavilion Café in Claygate offers the perfect, relaxed family day out. If the kids have had their fill of more exotic outings this Easter, play a ball game in Claygate Recreation Ground where the café is situated, enjoy the adjacent, well-equipped kids playground, and treat yourselves to some delicious cake or lunch at the café itself. For parents, The Pavilion Café is a delightful place to wile away a couple of hours. If the weather is fine, take advantage of the outside seating to enjoy the peaceful, sunny spot. If not, cosy up inside with some magazines and enjoy the excellent coffee.

Visit on Easter Monday 21 April and the kids can enjoy the Easter Egg Hunt and chocolate prize or sign them up for an Easter Cake Making session in the run up to Easter. There will also be FREE activities for children running every day of the school holidays, including football, dancing, cricket, cheerleading and more. If you fancy some fine dining without the kids, The Pavilion Café transforms itself into a pop-up restaurant once a month, with visiting chefs cooking up mouth-watering three course meals at incredibly reasonable prices.

A Bus Load of Fun for Families at London Transport Museum Bertie the Bus will be the star attraction at the London Transport Museum’s Acton Depot on 15 and 16 March. There will be Storytime at 11.30am and 2.30pm each day during which children can hear the tale of Bertie the Bus as he copes with all the passengers who climb aboard. From his favourite customers to the dreaded Nasty Nathan, he makes sure they all arrive at their chosen destinations. At 12pm and 3pm each day, children can take part in Make and Take Workshops in which they can create their own Bertie the Bus and fill him with a variety of passengers - kind and horrid, real and imagined. During the Easter Holidays at the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden, children can get hands on with Construct a Bus activities or undertake the challenge of being part of a bus construction line in daily Storytime at 11.30am and 2.30pm from 12 to 21 April. Whose team can work together to make the quickest, strongest bus and help Cedric Shopping Bags get home without losing anything? Make and Take Workshops at 11.30am and 2.30pm daily will allow children to get involved in drawing the old and eccentric buses around the museum, as well as transforming a cardboard box into their own fantastical bus, giving it wheels, and taking it on an exciting journey around the museum. Entry is FREE for children. © National Trust Images/©National Trust Images/Andrew Butler. Registered Charity Number 205846.

Always a mysterical experience for kids of all ages, a trip to Hobbledown in Epsom this Easter promises lots of excitement, including newborn lambs, chicks and baby goats all vying for attention, performances and an Easter Egg Hunt. Children can set off around the farm on the Egg Hunt before catching a special show with resident Hobbler characters, which include Huck, Tipp, Eliza and Professor Topperpot. If they still have an appetite for hunting, then send them off to the Crystallite Mine, where they can gather gems hidden in the sand and weigh them to see if they have collected enough to exchange for a lollipop on the way out. The outdoor and indoor play options at Hobbledown are endless, with the wooden structures of Hobbledown Market offering great opportunities for kids to climb onto, into and under! Easter Days Out

LOOK OUT FOR EASTER EGG HUNTS!

New Arrivals at Bocketts Farm! By Justina Gapper

Spring is the busiest season at Bocketts Farm near Leatherhead, with lambing in full swing. Around 300 lambs will be born over the Easter period, so this is your opportunity to witness a birth or meet a new

arrival! Lambs will be housed in the BIG Animal Barn, where children can ask questions of the experts in daily Meet the Shepherd sessions, stroke older lambs and feed the sheep. Becky Gowing, General Manager of Bocketts Farm, says “Easter is our most popular time. Everyone wants to get outside after the winter. The lambs are a real highlight.” Smaller and fluffier newborns, such as chicks and ducklings, will also be hatching during the Easter holidays. And if you hear high-pitched squeaking and snorting, make sure to track down the new litter of piglets! With the spring, a new outdoor

Sequins, Salad and Sunflowers at Strawberry Hill House Tracking down Easter clues, planting seeds or creating a giant, sequined egg - there’s something to entertain every child at Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham this Easter. Between 5 and 19 April, a special treasure hunt challenges kids to solve clues hidden in the rooms and secret passageways of the house for the chance to win a prize. Look out for the bunnies which have been knitted by volunteers of the Strawberry Hill House Sewing Bee and the craftspeople at work on the second phase of the house’s restoration. Children go FREE with a paying adult with a small additional charge for the treasure hunt. Between 19 and 21 April, children earn a chocolate prize by following the Easter Garden Trail around the grounds. A small charge applies but entrance to the beautiful grounds is FREE for all. For the first time, Strawberry Hill House is also running drop-in activities in the garden, or inside if the weather is inclement. Encourage your child’s green finger in Happy Heads from 12.30 to 3pm on Saturday 5 April, in which children can create

cress heads to take home, and Growing for Gold on Saturday 12 April when they can plant their own sunflowers in the grounds. Come back in summer to see their flowers in full bloom! Finally in Bouncing Bunnies on Saturday 19 April, there is the chance to make Easter Bunny masks or head-bands with ears, or turn a paper plate into an Easter Bunny – and then go for a bounce around the gardens! Indoor workshops for the under and over 5s will take place on Wednesday 9 and 16 April. These include Jack and the Beanstalk between 11am and 12pm on 9 April in which under 5s can listen to Jack’s adventures before planting a beanstalk of their own to take home. Also on 9 April, over 5s can enjoy Sensational Salads between 1pm and 2.30pm planting a selection of salad seeds to grow at home and eat in the summer. On 16 April, under-5s can decorate Giant Eggs with glitter, sequins and other arts material, whilst over 5s can create an egg masterpiece in Fabulous Faberge between 1pm and 2.30pm.

Other attractions include daily petting sessions with guinea pigs, rabbits and pigs, an outside play area, with maze, swings and slides, pony and tractor rides, pig racing and goat milking. Entry to Bocketts Farm costs £9 for adults, £9.60 for children ages 3 to 17, and £7.70 for children ages 2 to 3 years. Some activities involve a small extra cost.

All Aboard Thomas the Tank!

Join the world’s most popular tank engine and his friends at The Watercress Line in Hampshire this Easter. A Day Out With Thomas, which runs between 12 and 21 April, gives steam train fans of all ages the opportunity to ride on Thomas or Diesel, shake hands with the Fat Controller and enjoy themed Thomas activities. Anna Williams Barnes of The Watercress Line reports that Thomas events appeal to all family members.“We have lots of grandparents bringing children, both girls and boys. Steam train rides are a great sensory experience for everyone - including babies!”

The real steam trains will run as usual along the glorious 10 miles of track from Ropley to Alresford, whilst the Thomas and Diesel replicas (E2 and O2 tanks) give families short trips along the line from Ropley and Alresford stations respectively. & What’s in a Dance Syllabus?

If you are choosing a dance school for your child, you may be wondering about the merits of the RAD and ISTD syllabuses. RAD stands for Royal Academy of Dance, a UK-based examination board founded in 1920, which has become the largest training body for classical ballet in the world. Its syllabuses progressively develop a student’s technical, musical and performance skills. The Imperial Society of Dance Teachers is another UK-based examination board, established in 1904, which specialises in a range of dance styles including Modern, Tap, Ballroom, Latin American and Freestyle, Disco and Rock n Roll. Victoria Maitland,

Principal of Kew Academy of Performing Arts reports “RAD and ISTD syllabuses have both recently been redesigned. The new RAD syllabuses now offer new, fresh exercises and inspirational music, bringing the teaching style into the present and focusing more upon the requirements of today’s dancers. Equally, the revamped ISTD syllabuses are challenging, but more funky and fun.” Victoria believes syllabuses are important.“They advance a dancer in stages with which their body can cope” she explains. They also promote self-discipline, boost confidence and help set goals. Examinations offer a challenge and a great sense of achievement for children and give parents an indication of their child’s progress. “We offer RAD ballet and ISTD syllabuses at Kew Academy of

Performing Arts, as well as LAMDA drama classes” says Victoria. The benefit is that a child can start learning one dance style and move on to learn another at the same school. “It is unusual to find a school which has pupils continuing on to achieve such high levels in all disciplines”

By Linda Stone, Editor

reports Victoria. Her past pupils have gone on to places at prestigious dance schools like The Royal Ballet School, Elmhurst School for Dance, Arts Educational School and RADA. For more information, visit www.kewacademydance.co.uk

Located at the clubhouse of the Kew and Ham Sports Association in Ham fields, the aptly-named Little Hamsters comprises an indoor play café and a fantastic outdoor area, making it the perfect, all-weather venue. Owners, Beth and Helen are a delightful duo of local mums understandably proud of the loyal customer base Little Hamsters has established.“We’ve only been open for two years and lots of families who visited regularly with their first child now visit regularly with their second.” Such loyalty is understandable, as the pair go to great lengths to create a home from home environment.“We

want parents to feel like they are having lunch at home with other mums and their kids – except that we’ll clean up the mess!” says Beth. Little Hamsters has recently introduced energetic music, dance and play classes for kids run by local businesses and are encouraging parents to share their talents too. ‘One of our regular mums is a jewellery designer. She presented her designs to our customers and they loved it! We’ve become a part of the community here and want to support it in as many ways as possible.’ The outdoor play area is guaranteed to exhaust the kids, whilst, indoors, a ball pond and soft play shapes are ideal for creating obstacle courses! There’s also a dressing up corner, play kitchen, and plenty of toys and books for all ages. The coffee is good, the food is fresh and tasty, and snacks are

aplenty. Considerate of the needs of children with allergies, Helen reports “One of our mums has a son who is allergic to gluten. She brings in a loaf of wheat-free bread that we keep in the freezer for when they visit.” I arrived a noon with my two and a half year old daughter, intending to stay for an hour. We stayed for two! With my daughter fully engaged, I managed to make three phone calls and do some work. Little Hamsters Play Café is a welcome refuge for parents with energetic children. Play sessions are not time-limited and the café is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 2pm during term time. For more information, visit www.littlehamsters.co.uk.

Coerver Football Coaching Celebrates 30th Anniversary! By Olivia Malaure

Did you know that four million children participate in organised football in England alone? Inspired by his own passion for the beautiful game, Amit Sohal recently gave his career in finance the boot and bought Coerver® West London, a franchise of Coerver® Coaching, a football school for children. Inspired by trophy winning coach, Wiel Coerver, Coerver®’s innovative techniques have given it an outstanding global reputation and influenced the game from the top professional leagues all the way down to the school playground. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see how Coerver® affects kids” says Amit.

This year Coerver® celebrates its 30th anniversary, whilst Amit celebrates the phenomenal growth of Coerver® West London. The number of children it coaches has increased from 50 to 190 in Kingston, Hounslow and most recently, in Guildford, in the last year. So what makes it different? Whereas many coaching techniques concentrate on team dynamics, Coerver® focuses on the individual player. “We’ve developed an inspirational, individualised way of working”’ says Amit. “We get to know each of our players and coach to their individual needs.” The Coerver® technique covers Skills, Speed, Game Sense (timing

Dealing with “Blue Monday” By Phil Cox

Dealing with “Blue Monday” By Phil Cox

Dealing with “Blue Monday” By Phil Cox

There is a Monday, late in January every year, which the media regularly reports as the most depressing day of the year. Of course, what reporters don’t tell us is that “Blue Monday” isn’t a medical phenomenon – it’s a travel industry marketing ploy designed to boost sales during the winter! However, depression is a real concern for many people, and, in January, symptoms that have been masked during the festive season may become more apparent. Signs of Depression Always consult a GP for a full diagnosis, but these symptoms can be indicators of depression: Sleep problems (can’t get to sleep/waking very early) Constant tiredness and lack of motivation Significant change in appetite or weight Reduced libido Feeling tearful, guilty and/or hopeless Not getting pleasure from life

What Causes Depression? Depression can be triggered by bereavement, divorce, injury, decreasing levels of daylight, or losing a job. Equally, depression can creep up gradually, with no obvious “’trigger,’ making it difficult to recall quite how you felt when you were “okay.” Coping mechanisms can make it possible to soldier on - until it all becomes too much. Underlying causes of depression include a difficult early-family environment (losing a parent when young, critical parents, or abuse), negative thinking patterns, or lack of control over your life. It is not clear whether depression itself is inherited, but studies suggest that you are more likely to suffer, if a parent or sibling does. What Should I Do? Talk to your GP: He or she will offer valuable support. Give yourself a break. Do you REALLY have to do everything on your to-do list today? It may feel as if the world will end if you don’t, but will it really? Acknowledge your feelings. Recognise and accept how low you are feeling and resolve to be kind to yourself. Learn some relaxation techniques. Breathing exercises, simple meditations and visualisations can dramatically improve the physiological symptoms associated with depression. Some of these only take a minute and are available online. Feed your soul. Do more of what makes you feel good, whether listening to music, watching football, having a massage, singing in a choir, or playing with your kids. Talk. To family and friends, or, for more objective assistance, a qualified counsellor, who can help you work through the underlying causes of your depression. Look after your body. Eat well and limit your sugar and alcohol intake, as this can have a negative impact on your mood. Exercise! Not only does it release feel-good endorphins, it helps regular sleep. Get the amount of sleep YOU personally need. Creating a bedtime routine and turning off your television, computer and phone in the hour before bed can help you unwind. If you are feeling depressed, this may all feel “easier said than done.” Often though, the act of taking control of an element of your life, however small, can kick start the process of recovery. Extra Phil Cox is a qualified counsellor practicing in Surrey. He is a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
