A new, weekly Amanda’s Action Club class has started in Kensington. The interactive classes are fun mini-workouts for young children (aged 4months-4 years) and their carers. Expect funky nursery rhymes, unique props and lots of movement and energy!

So if you live in Kensington and look after preschool kids go along and join in- classes take place every Thursday in the Kensington Kindergarten, just off the High Street and will be hosted by Amanda herself. They take place at 2.30pm, 3.15pm and 4pm for half an hour. Classes cost £10 or £18 for 2 siblings on a pay-as-you-go basis and there are discounts for booking up on a half termly basis. If you need some motivation to get out and get fit, you could try the new Indoor and outdoor fitness based classes run by an ex Army Physical Training Instructor (PTI) based at the Brunel University Indoor Athletic Centre (UB8 3PH). Music in Silence – Musical experiences for very young deaf children, and babies and toddlers from multicultural families Music in Silence is a project to explore how music can facilitate, and support vocalising and the ability to fully socialise in playful, musical ways. The Music House for Children has been involved with early years music teaching, training and workshops for nearly twenty years. In addition to a in-depth early years programme the not for profit organisation provides instrumental teaching in London homes, and at its school in Shepherds Bush.

Emma Hutchinson, Founder and Director has devised ‘Music in Silence’ to demonstrate the powerful influences that music has in supporting young deaf children’s engagement with others, as well as assisting with aural focus, phonetic understanding, physical and sensory development. Using a range of instruments such as glockenspiel, fife, whistles, ukulele, kantale, piano, agogos and cornet, over 18 months Emma will deliver weekly sessions with deaf children and their families from 1 – 6 years old.

Supported by Youth Music and currently in its early stages, a number of musical activities are being explored including musical ways to read well known stories to help with phonetic utterance, reading skills, dancing, musical games using specific sounds, songs as devised by the children and parents, singing and the playing of different instruments.

Emma has worked on a pilot music project with young deaf children for the last four years. Many of these children wore cochlear implants and came from all walks of life. The positive outcomes included focused hearing and frequency recognition as well as growth in confidence, vocal and creative independence, and their ability to have an informed opinion. Little Crickets is a deaf club headed by Chrissie Turner. Families with deaf children often feel isolated or find it difficult to cope. The excellent support networks in the UK including therapy and one to one session in specialist units tends to focus on individuals. Clubs such as Little Crickets means that deaf children can enjoy storytelling, musical and artistic activities, with parents able to share similar experiences and essentially provide much needed support.

‘Music in Silence’ will be immersed into Little Cricket’s weekly meetings held on Tuesdays from 4 – 6pm at Randolph Beresford Children’s centre, Australia Road, W12 7PH. ‘Music in Silence’ will also take place at Cathnor Children’s Centre, W12 each Tuesday from 1.30 – 3.30pm with families, their babies and toddlers from different cultural groups within the community.

The Music House for Children is working with Play Association Hammersmith & Fulham. Emma hopes to put the findings of this project forward as a recommendation for other groups in the UK to adopt.

The Energy-saving light bulbs that come with a health warning!

Hard as it may be to believe but one of your most common household items could prove hazardous to your families health. As compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs have become popular, little is known about the fact that they contain small amounts of mercury, a toxic substance.

Because of this, they could cause a problem if disposed of incorrectly or accidently broken in your home.

The amount of mercury found in a CFL bulb is extremely small – just 5milligrams (a thermometer contains 3 grams) which is needed to generate light efficiently. The mercury can’t escape from a light bulb when it is being used, but you shouldn’t throw it into the normal rubbish as the mercury could escape if the bulb gets broken. Instead, take it to your local waste and recycling centre.

Even if your bulb did break, the mercury it contains is unlikely to cause you any harm, however it is good practice to reduce your exposure to mercury and take precautions as advised by the Health Protection Agency (www.hpa.org.uk).

Danger on Tap Water fluoridation is a debate that has never gone away. For years, fluoride has been added to the water supplies of many cities around the UK but concern over its impact on our health still exist. What’s wrong with fluoride in water?

Fluoride occurs naturally in water at around 0.3 parts per million, but water fluoridation adjusts that to around 1 part per million. Around 6 million people in the UK population currently drink fluoride water, and more councils are considering using it.

The benefits of fluoridation are significant. It reduces the number of decayed, missing and filled teeth in children and adults. Studies estimate an 18–40% reduction in cavities when water fluoridation is used by children who already have access to toothpaste and other sources of fluoride. As a result, children experience less toothache, have fewer dental abscesses, require fewer dental extractions and general anaesthetics.

However, recent research has demonstrated that young children in fluoridated areas ingest fluoride in excess of recommended upper limits resulting in dental fluorosis [teeth discolouration]. Some argue that fluoride is a poison, and can lead to side effects such as irritable bowel syndrome, rashes and nausea, and even more seriously bone cancer. The debate continues.

Levi Roots Shares Secrets of his success with Thames pupils Levi Roots, the man who famously slayed the dragons on BBC’s Dragons Den with his Reggae Reggae Sauce, recently visited Thames Christian College in Levi Roots with the winning team Battersea to share how he managed to create a brand for a sauce that outsold Heinz tomato ketchup in Sainbury's stores the week it launched across the supermarket chain. During Assembly Levi talked openly about being an entrepreneur offering practical advice with personal anecdotes of success, mistakes made and lessons learned. Acting as a ‘dragon’ he listened to their pupils’ business pitches and offered sound advice. The winning team, pictured with Levi had the idea of renovating second hand vans, personalising them for commercial customers and selling them on for a profit. Thames Christian College has a good relationship with Levi Roots and is lucky enough to have its school dinners provided by Levi’s own café next to the school. www.thameschristiancollege.org.uk

Clifton Lodge Supports UNICEF The Politics Club at Clifton Lodge School has chosen to support UNICEF for their fundraising efforts this year. UNICEF is the world’s leading organisation focusing on children, raising funds for emergency and development work around the world. Events kicked off with World Book Day when staff and pupils dressed as their favourite book characters and made a donation to UNICEF. The pupils then designed and sold wristbands for “Raising Hope” Headmaster, David Baldwin as with all profits going to UNICEF and a Dumbledore on World Book Day. sponsored Swimathon raised further funds for the charity. In addition, the school is running a ‘Penny Drop’ where 1p and 2p coins are collected and contributed to the fund. In the Summer Term, more exciting events are planned with an ambitious target for donations set by the Politics Club of £2,500.

St Benedict’s Open Day St Benedict’s is an independent Catholic co-educational school in Ealing for ages 3 -18 years. The school welcomes students of other Christian denominations and, in the Senior School and Sixth Form, other faiths. They are holding open Mornings in the Summer term for parents.

New checks for children Following on from a pilot scheme last year, new phonics tests are to be introduced to all Year 1 pupils this summer. The Year 1 phonics screening check is a short assessment to confirm whether children have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard, and will apply to all Year 1 pupils in maintained schools, academies and Free Schools. The test will take place between 18 and 22 June 2012, with the aim of identifying children who need extra help and who can then be given support by their school to improve their reading skills. According to the Department of Education, the check will comprise a list of 40 words and non-words or nonsense words, which a child will read one-to-one with a teacher. Half of the words cover phonics skills that tend to be learnt in Reception, while the other half are based on Year 1 phonics skills. Word from the DfE is that the tests will not be daunting, but are merely there to check that children at the end of Year 1 have the foundations they need to learn to read, such as skills for blending sounds into words and the phonic knowledge of recognising the sounds for basic letters and letter combinations.

Exam boards get tough Finally, exam boards are listening to the cries of parents and teachers that GCSEs are becoming too easy! The exams regulator, Ofqual, has announced that it will be making changes to GCSEs in English literature, maths, history and geography, tightening them up and ensuring students study the whole curriculum. This comes amid concerns that pupils are only studying topics likely to come up in exams, rather than the entire course. “We are tightening GCSEs in these key subjects to make sure students cover the whole curriculum,” says Ofqual chief executive Glenys Stacey. “We want our young people to have the best possible educational experience, with qualifications that prepare them for the future. The exam boards have welcomed this steer from the regulator and are to look again at these qualifications and how the rules are interpreted to make sure that young people taking them have to study an appropriate range and depth of the subject.” This spring’s announcement is part of a move away from teaching to the exam and to encourage wider study. Changes to GCSE geography will be introduced for teaching from this September, with maths from November and history and English literature papers from September 2013. “It is vital confidence is restored in the exams system,” added a Department for Education spokesman.

“We are committed to raising standards for all pupils and are pleased Ofqual is taking action to ensure that GCSEs in these subjects are more challenging.”

Opening presents Hide presents around the house and provide clues to help your child find them. Follow a ribbon to their first gift, or unroll string all around the house that take them to their presents.

Get out the camcorder and interview your child about the special things they have done that year, include props like their award-winning science project that year, their sports trophies, the selfportrait they did of themselves, etc.

Do the same walk every year, have dinner at the same place, go sledging, have a picnic on the beach. Do activities that are typical of what you are like as a family, e.g. if you are a musical family, hold a concert, if you are outdoorsy plan a boat trip.

Annual additions Plant a tree or flowers that bloom annually around your child's birthday.

Ask grandparents to add to a charm bracelet or commemorative coin collection each year.

Tell a Tale Let the birthday child stay up a little later after the other children have gone to bed and tell them about the day they were born, and how you felt when they arrived.

Remind them of how special they are A simple way is give each member of the family a birthday candle, then pass around a small dessert. Each person puts in their candle and tells the birthday girl/ boy something they love about them.

They pass the dessert to the next person, who does the same until everyone has added their candle, light the candles and sing Happy Birthday.

Since traditions are often visual and repeated, most children with special needs will really appreciate and learn to love these birthday traditions. To help ensure their special day, here are a few extra watchouts...

■ Watch what they eat It’s easy to let slip strict dietary requirements during a day of celebration.

For children with allergies and even vegetarian, let your party host know in advance and make appropriate plans.

■ Avoid overload Don’t overwhelm with too many guests, lights, games, candles, music and presents. Decorate simply, put on a relaxing CD, and provide a quiet place where the child can go if s/he wants to.

■ Prepare them Let your special needs child know in advance what to expect. Explain the plan of the day. Let them sit where they are comfortable and if out; provide them with an exit strategy. Give your child a signal they can use with you if they need to leave a place or situation.

■ Keep the day low key Treat the birthday as just another day, an important day, but not one that’s too busy. Let your special needs child, and all your children, plan the day so that it’s kept special and unique.

1. Brown paper bags with the child's name in big writing and decorated with stickers are very effective.

Before the Ride

One of the best ways to enjoy cycling is in a group, and there’s no better group than your own family! Children as young as 2yrs old are now able to cycle using balance bikes, so there really is no excuse for the whole family not to join in. We are all aware of the problems of obesity and with a shocking 10% of children in the UK now clinically obese (British Medical Association), cycling is a great way to spend quality family time together, get fitter and – after the initial equipment has been bought – it’s a cheap, fun activity.

Do your homework: Make certain you are familiar with the bike route. If you get lost or the route is longer than expected, your child may suffer not only from a diminished experience, but potentially in more serious ways such as dehydration or exposure – older children will enjoy the planning too and might even learn some geography if you look at a map together.

Start early: Children tend to tire quickly in the afternoon. Take advantage of their energy in the morning and start your ride early.

Invite playmates: Cycling is more fun when shared.

If your child has a friend who is at the same level of competency on a bike, bring him or her along.

Slow down: Realize that a 4-mile ride may take 2 hours.

Don't expect to ride as fast as you would on your own.

Be aware of traffic: What might seem like light traffic to you could be a more dangerous situation for your child, whether biking separately or in a trailer.

Be prepared: Carry a tool kit and know how to use it.

Also, carry a first-aid kit that includes a few bandages and antibiotic cream to handle minor cases of road rash.

Dress right: Bring a daypack to hold extra jackets in case the weather changes. Also, try to wear bright clothing or reflective sashes, to aid your visibility.

Bikes need to complement your lifestyle so, before you buy, think about where you want to use them. Depending on the ages of your children and your levels of fitness, you may need racers or mountain bikes for sporty action, hybrids for a mixture of road and trail riding, plus smaller models and balance bikes for the children. Whilst you tend to get what you pay for, the most important part is the right size frame.

If you also intend to use your bike to commute, find out if your employer runs a cycle-to-work scheme – you could save up to 40%. Once the bikes are chosen, remember to take a spare inner tube and a puncture kit to keep them moving, plus a good quality helmet and a drink. It’s also worth investing in a bike lock so you can pop in for tea and cake en route!

Stay safe According to a recent Sustrans survey, more than half of us believe the roads are too unsafe to cycle on, but The National Cycle Network provides safe and attractive routes perfect for family bike rides (NB: see www.sustrans.org.uk for your local routes, and include any smaller places you recommend – such as local parks, greenways etc).

Lead from the front If you want your kids to be fired up about cycling then you need to lead by example. Women who thought their bike days were over are being welcomed at rides designed just for women – check out Breeze, Cycletta and Diva 100 (see boxes for more info). They offer a great chance to get back on your bike in great company.

Take breaks: Plan on taking a lot of short breaks.

Eat snacks: A well-timed snack can defuse a squabble or bad mood and keep energy going. Kids tend to misbehave more when they're tired, hungry or thirsty.

Make it fun: Choose an interesting route that goes by gardens, streams, views, farms or a favourite shop. Most children are interested in what they can see along the route rather than what's at the end of the road or trail.

Express enthusiasm: If you convey a genuinely upbeat attitude, children most often will be inclined to mimic it.

Traffic-free, flat and on largely tarmac paths, this ride is ideal for all types of bikes and will suit novice riders.

Olympics: Torch coming through your area

Lighting the way to London 2012 On 18 May 2012, the Olympic Torch Relay will start with a 70-day celebration that will travel thousands of miles to bring the London 2012 Games to hundreds of communities across the UK. The Olympic Flame will be lit on 10 May in Olympia, Greece and will embark on a 8 day relay around Greece before arriving at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens for the official Olympic Flame handover ceremony. Lighting the cauldron in the Olympic Stadium signifies the beginning of the games and the flame will stay lit until the closing ceremony on 12 August.

The Olympic Flame is one of the most recognized symbols of any Olympic Games.

A ritual for the lighting of the Flame is followed at every Games. It is lit from the sun’s rays at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, in a traditional ceremony among the ruins of the home of the Ancient Games. The flame is then handed over to the new host city and the Flame is then transferred from one torchbearer to another, spreading the message of peace, unity and friendship.

It’s not just sporting superstars who’ll carry the Olympic Flame this summer. People from all walks of life and from every part of the UK will take part. In all, 8,000 torchbearers will get the chance of a lifetime to carry the flame and over half of the torchbearers will be young people aged 12 - 25.

When will the torch come through West London?

For the first time in Olympic history, Britain will be the first country to hold a torch relay completely within the UK. The Olympic Torch Relay will be a fantastic spectacular, a chance to celebrate your community and showcase it to the world – so don’t miss out! The Torch will be traveling through West London on the 24th of July (Ealing) and 26th July (Hammersmith and Fulham.) LAST CHANCE TO SEE: CHILEAN RESCUE CAPSULE (Until 13 May) Discover the technology behind the Chilean mine rescue of October 2010. The Science Museum displays one of five of the capsules built for the rescue mission of 33 miners who were trapped underground at the San José mine in Chile.

A COCKROACH TOUR OF THE MUSEUM - Visitors take on the form of cockroaches, dressing up in realistic costumes to begin a journey through the Museum, exploring the impact on the climate of scientific and technological developments from the perspective of a cockroach. To Oct. BUILD THE TRUCE At the first Olympic Games in 776BC an ”Olympic Truce” was created in order to enable athletes from Greece’s warring cities to travel and compete in safety. Reinstated at the 1992 Games the Olympic Truce continues to exist today.

Visitors will be able to explore the concept of truce, from challenging notions about the inevitability of war, through to truce as a method of conflict resolution and what it can mean on a practical level.

As part of the exhibition, visitors young and old can get their own blood pumping with a white knuckle ride in a virtual skeleton bobsleigh, measure their reaction time with a ‘beat the clock’ test, and throw some moves on an electronic dance floor.
