News

Selling online across the country for two years, word is spreading and there is much excitement about going international, taking this British innovation to new markets.
Debbie Smith and Stephanie Evans, both mums, started Present Print as the frustration of thinking what to buy friends and family was becoming greater and greater each year. Debbie explains: “Whilst we understand first hand those pressure moments of what to buy that is different when it comes to birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions, we also wanted to develop a range of products that help motivate, reward and inspire children to learn. We are delighted to have launched Present Print, which has a range of innovative gifts and ideas designed to do just that.”
You can choose between three flavours or buy a mixed box for parties, school or the summer holidays at www.cleversweets.co.uk
From personalised reward charts, gardening gadgets and wooden toys to chocolate bars that are a real delight and shoe labels with a child’s photograph on, Present Print’s range is distinct and diverse. So, if you’re struggling or just looking to make a good impression, visit the Present Print website. Buying gifts shouldn’t be a pressure but a pleasure! www.presentprint.co.uk.
Guide Dogs charity shop celebrates its first year of success Since opening the doors in March 2014, Guide Dogs are proud to announce the wonderful sum of £15,000 has been raised at its first ever charity shop at Leamington Training School. This is more remarkable as the shop is totally run by volunteers and all stock has been generously donated by members of the public. This totally new and exciting venture for the Charity has resulted in much valued funds being raised to help fund its continued local work in supporting blind and partially sighted people. Guide Dogs now wish to build upon this success by asking for public support with donations of unwanted gifts, children’s clothing, men’s and women’s branded clothing, books, DVDs, CDs and vinyl (not videos or cassettes), jewellery, belts and handbags - anything of saleable quality! Guide Dogs are also looking for volunteers to help in the shop, so if you feel you could donate a few hours a week to support this new venture, please get in touch. No previous experience is necessary and full training will be provided. It’s a fabulous opportunity for anyone who would like to gain some retail experience, however much time you are able to offer. The shop opening hours are Monday to Friday 1pm4pm and Saturday 10am-2pm and there is free parking on site.

Over 50 years of the RSC Nursery
On separation, what are your options? By Carline Gayle-Buckle, Quality Solicitors Moore and Tibbits Separation can be a difficult and overwhelming experience, even more so when there are children involved. You and your ex-partner may have opposing views as to how to divide your family assets and as to what is best for your children. It is important if possible to keep the lines of communication open between you as you may eventually be able to reach a compromise. If you are able to resolve your issues yourselves, follow this up by taking legal advice so that you are fully aware of the legal implications of the agreement. You can also arrange for your agreement to be reflected in a legally binding document. If you are unable to reach an agreement direct with your ex-partner or if you are confused, there are several options available to you.
Mediation
You and your ex-partner will be assisted by a trained mediator to help sort out children and financial matters. The mediator will help to guide and assist you in your discussions but will not take sides or give legal advice. His/ her role will be simply to help you towards what is best for you and your children. You may consult a family solicitor during the mediation process to ensure that the deal you are considering is fair and if you reach an agreement, it can be made into a legally binding document. Mediation may not be appropriate if there has been domestic violence within your relationship.
Collaborative Law Process
This process helps you reach an agreement through a series of face to face meetings with you and your ex-partner each having specially trained collaborative lawyers by your side. The emphasis of this process is to allow you to deal with your issues in a nonconfrontational way so that you can retain an amicable relationship with your ex-partner moving forward. You will both have to sign an
agreement which commits you to trying to resolve the issues without going to court. If the negotiations break down, your collaborative lawyer will not be able to represent you at court. If you reach an agreement within the collaborative law process, this can be reflected in a legally binding document.
Solicitors’ negotiations
You may choose to use a solicitor who can give you independent advice on your rights, responsibilities and legal entitlement on separation. A solicitor can negotiate and try to resolve your issues directly with your ex-partner or with his or her solicitor. Any agreement reached in this process can be placed within a legally binding document.
Going to Court
If attempts to resolve the issues on your separation fail, you may have to consider starting court proceedings. Before you issue proceedings, the court will have to be assured that you have considered all other options and you will have to attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM). In court proceedings, the court ultimately has the power to make a decision about what it considers to be fair and reasonable and you will have to abide by the terms of the court’s decision. It is possible during the court process to reach an agreement directly with your ex-spouse and at any stage prior to a final hearing. Upon separation, you should take time to consider all the options available to you and decide on which is the best route to pursue. If you need further guidance or information as to the options available, you should consult an independent solicitor. The Royal Shakespeare Company’s Nursery - one of the very few nurseries run by a theatre company in the UK - first opened as the Theatre Playgroup in 1963 in a church hall in Stratford-upon-Avon town centre with a roll of only a handful of children. After having several homes it is now based in Shottery, next to Anne Hathaway’s cottage just outside Stratford-upon-Avon and welcomes local children aged six months to school age, as well as those of RSC staff and actors who are working in the town for a short time. Over the years, the nursery has grown and developed a strong reputation as a small, friendly day care facility where children have the opportunity to play and learn in groups that are of mixed ages at their own pace in a nurturing atmosphere. Staff at the RSC Nursery are a well-established team, whose consistency and experience ensures happy, resourceful and well supported children. The nursery’s ethos is strongly influenced by the philosophy of the German educationalist Friedrich Froebel who recognised the importance of thinking and doing through play, a child-centeredness approach with respect for the child as an individual which inspires independent thinkers, a philosophy which especially embraces the great outdoors. The nursery boasts an extensive woodland garden and children are encouraged to spend as much time outside as they wish. The ethos of the nursery was supported by Ofsted in October 2014 when they recognised the nursery as an outstanding provision stating that, “babies and children are enthusiastic and extremely effective learners. They are very keen to

RSC Head of Nursery Kate Robinson has worked in the nursery since 1998, said: “I’m delighted to be part of such a unique organisation. The nursery is made special not only by its beautiful location, but the dedicated team who are passionate about the care of the children who join us each day. I believe that being part of a theatre company gives us the confidence to be creative and playful in our approach. Although many things have changed since the 1960s, the RSC Nursery today still maintains the imaginative and fun environment of its roots.” www.rsc.org.uk

2015 Summer Reading Challenge:
inspiring children to read and set a Guinness World Records title this summer Libraries across the UK are getting ready to encourage young readers to explore some of the astonishing real-life achievements and world records as featured in the Guinness World Records Books as part of the Summer Reading Challenge 2015. Organised by The Reading Agency charity and the public library network, the annual Summer Reading Challenge, aimed at 4-11 year olds and their families is simple and fun. Children are encouraged to read six or more library books of their choice during the summer holidays with collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate or medal for every child who completes the Challenge. Children can sign up at their local library at the start of the summer holidays - it’s absolutely free - and pre-schoolers can take part in the mini-Challenge.
Visit the children’s website and try the Book Sorter which helps children choose what to read next: www.recordbreakers.org.uk Download the Record Breakers Summer Reading Challenge App at: sol.us/records www.facebook.com/SummerReadingChallengeUK www.readingagency.org.uk/summerreadingchallenge
Every year there is a new theme and this year the Summer Reading Challenge has teamed up with Guinness World Records to establish a “Record Breakers” themed Challenge. Collecting stickers as they go, young readers will discover the weird, wonderful and wacky records from around the world in six different categories: Cool Tech, Way to Go!, The Big Stuff, Animal Magic, People Power and Action! Adventure! As part of this year’s Challenge, children, parents, carers, young volunteers, teachers, much-loved children’s authors and important figures in communities around the UK will be asked to make a pledge to help us set a new Guinness World Records™ title for the Most Pledges Received for a Reading Campaign! Public libraries are collecting pledges across the UK between Friday 10 and Monday 13 July - check with your local library to find out when you can submit your pledge. The official launch date of the Summer Reading Challenge in England is Saturday 11 July (although local variation applies). On days you can’t get to the library, there is still the Record Breakers website, with so much for children to discover and they can keep a record of their Challenge too. Children can also recommend books and decide what to read next using the Book Sorter.
Helpful hints
Here are some ideas to help your child finish the Challenge. • Visit the library as often as you can. There are all kinds of events going on, and children soon get caught up in the fun. • Read yourself! Don’t feel guilty about sitting down with a book, newspaper or magazine. It sets a good example to kids – and they will copy you! • Let children choose their own books. If they don’t like a book, just move on to the next one, or ask one of the library staff to recommend a read. • Children don’t just have to read stories or novels. Fact books, audio books, poetry – they all count!

Teaching children to love reading will give them pleasure for their whole life By Justine Crow Being able to read is a vital life skill; but a ‘love’ of reading enriches us much further, because a passion for the consumption of words for reading’s sake alone enables curiosity. This greases the tracks in all areas of education, starting with confidence in spelling and increased vocabulary, continuing with the ability to research and discover independently. Reading for the sheer heck of it is possibly the most intensely satisfying of all lifelong human activities. How do you instil that passion? Wearing my various hats of bookseller, parent (of both genders), classroom assistant, swimming teacher and published author, these are my top ten tips: 1. With a baby or toddler, choose books you like too. Your enthusiasm is infectious. 2. Use your local bookseller because they are a mine of advice. 3. Learning to read takes time. Have patience with your little darling and they will crack it eventually. 4. Foundation Stage & KS1 books are different to picture books. To develop a love of reading, buy books after school simply for pleasure and leave the reading trees to the teachers. 5. Never say to a child, “You’ve got too many books.” NOBODY has too many books. 6. Save favourites from your childhood for reading aloud at bedtime. 7. The new wave of graphic novels for younger readers is brilliant for introducing the classics. 8. Children often choose titles that appear to be too young for them because they know they can manage them. Age ranges are just a guide. 9. Reward them with books that connect to their lives, even Disney and football, and remember, sticker books are still books. As are colouring books and joke books and Lego books and fact books and recipe books and… 10. Read by example. If they see you doing it, they will do it too.
And finally
Take the lead and share books you like with them: your children will like them too! As they grow, don’t pressure kids to read alone - they will love that one-to-one attention. Praise their literary taste, whatever it may be. Justine Crow is the author of The Little Book of Nits published by Bloomsbury. Nature’s Classroom By Hannah Hunter
As parents, we know that children are happy in the outdoors, and once even the most hardened of city-dwellers have got used to the damp and mud, they revel in unstructured time spent in the natural world. This applies not only to small children, but older ones too – contact with nature is known to impact positively on teenage anxiety and depression. Outdoor play can develop children’s understanding of risk, as well as testing their emotional and physical strength. Learning how high they can climb or how brave they can be, teaches them about themselves as well as how they relate to the environment. Contact with nature has even been shown to increase creativity and language development.
Children’s activity levels automatically go up when they are outdoors. As childhood obesity has a direct link with inactivity, outdoor learning could be a key to tackling this growing problem. So what can you do as a parent to increase your children’s contact with nature? Here we explore some of the options:
Forest schools
Inspired by Danish ‘open air life’ nurseries, the first UK Forest School was started in Somerset in 1993. Since then the movement has spread across the UK and now trained Forest Schools practitioners deliver a woodland learning experience in many Warwickshire schools, usually to primary-aged children and nurseries. Some holiday clubs also offer a Forest School programme (www.onsidecoaching.co.uk) (www.winchcombefarmdaynursery.co.uk ). Leading charity The Forest School Association (www.forestschoolassociation.org) lists the principles governing the sessions. Small groups of children are taken into woodland or other natural environment, “to support the development of a relationship between the learner and the natural world.” Children are encouraged to explore their environments, taking supported risks, and the learning is child-centred rather than teacher-led.

MULTI-ACTIVITY AND SPORTS Summer Tennis Camps
Clubs and classes
After-school clubs and classes and holiday camps can also support children’s learning outdoors. Many schools have nature or gardening clubs, often run by parent volunteers. Tried-and-tested outdoor organisations, the Scouts (www.scouts.org. uk) and Girl Guides (www.girlguiding.org.uk), offer a range of activities and camps.
Family nature days
Warwickshire Wildlife Trust (www. warwickshirewildlifetrust.org.uk) and Warwickshire Country Parks (http:// countryparks.warwickshire.gov.uk) run activities just for families and children, ranging from ‘nature tots’ toddler groups to family pond-dipping days. Also check out www.rspb.org.uk for local and national information and ideas for things to do at home. The National Trust has set up free trails (www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/activities/ geo-caching) - all you need is a GPS enabled device that uses coordinates (you can use a smartphone). Download co-ordinates to find the caches (small waterproof boxes of ‘treasure’). The Trust also provides less ‘techy’ outdoor activities for families – their ‘50 things to do before you’re 11¾’ is a good starting point. You can pledge some ‘wild time’ with your children by signing up to The Wild Network – an organisation dedicated to reconnecting children with nature, at www. projectwildthing.com. They have lots of fun activity ideas that will get you and your children outdoors. The film that inspired the organisation is available to watch online, it’s an interesting take on how to ‘re-brand’ nature to appeal to the younger generation, who this organisation claims are suffering from ‘nature-deficit disorder’.

Stratford Butterfly Farm celebrates 30 years You can watch the amazing lifecycle of a butterfly within the Emerging Cage. Observe the fascinating and strange in Insect City, where stick insects, beetles and many more remarkable creatures can be found. Marvel at the size of giant millipedes and snails in the Mini-Beast section. For the bolder, get close to the deadly and dangerous in perfect safety in Arachnoland; home to some of the world’s largest spiders, scorpions and other spinners of webs and dealers of death.
Stratford Butterfly Farm was first opened in July 1985 by David Bellamy. Today it is firmly positioned as Britain’s largest and most successful butterfly farm, attracting over 100,000 visitors each year. Set in a large tropical greenhouse, whatever the weather, rain or shine, you can stroll through the wonderful world of an exotic rainforest: a lush landscape of tropical blossom surrounding splashing waterfalls and fish-filled pools. Enjoy the unique pleasure of watching hundreds of the world’s most beautiful and colourful butterflies flying all around. See them feeding and flying in a wonderful tropical environment. Over the years, the Butterfly Farm has continued to add to its inhabitants including iguanas, green-necked paraquets and flightless Chinese painted quail. New in the Butterfly Farm this year is a bird feeding station. In the Caterpillar Room some of the world’s largest and most camouflaged caterpillars are on display.
Afterwards, take a walk through the Wildflower Garden and see if you can spot any native butterflies. The Wildflower Garden will be in full bloom during the summer and families are welcome to bring a picnic to have at one of the tables. Complete your visit at the Papillion Gift Shop for beautiful butterfly inspired gifts for all ages. A visit to Stratford-upon-Avon Butterfly Farm is a great family day out.

Summer
Rain, rain, don’t go away!
We’re having lots of fun today! One thing you can count on this summer is that there will be rain. When the heavens do open, you’ll need some ideas to keep your little ones occupied and keep you on the right side of sanity! Sarah Butters offers her favourite ways to fill a wet summer day.
Get board!
Whether you’re a Jedi at Jenga or a master Monopoly player, there’s nothing like a giant board games tournament to pass the time. This is a chance to encourage your family to forget the iPads and Xboxes and remember the fun you can have with three dimensional people.
Take a dip Grab your swimsuit and head to your local leisure centre. News that half of primary school children can’t swim the length of a pool should be a wake-up call for all parents. Many local swim schools offer intensive holiday courses for children looking to master this life-saving skill and you can support them with a rainy day trip to your local pool. Keep learning alive
Six weeks or more is a long time to be out of the classroom. Make a note of the days your local after school support centre is running holiday sessions. For example, Explore Learning is open daily over the school holidays and offers a range of learning opportunities for children from 4 years old.
Create a rainy day jar
Has your child ever asked to do something that you’ve not had the time for? Maybe it’s baking a batch of biscuits, building some Lego they’ve had since their birthday or showing you a dance routine they’ve created. Whenever time is against you, get your child to write the idea on a piece of paper and pop it in the Rainy Day Jar. It means you can reach into it for ideas as soon as you hear the words ‘’It’s raining!”
Head indoors
Your local museum is rainproof and packed with family activities to keep you all occupied. The summer holiday is a time for the attractions on your doorstep to put out the welcome mat for families. Take a look at the Families Warwickshire online What’s On guide to find out what’s happening locally – www.familieswarwickshire.co.uk
