News
Local life coach is inspired to help other mums Internationally certified coach, Tina Smith, has recently moved to Kenilworth from Melbourne, Australia with her husband and their two sons. Having worked in Australia and Brazil, Tina is delighted to bring her business to the UK. Tina first came across coaching when she was looking to find a new personal direction for herself after spending eight years as a stay-at-home mum. Whilst she felt very grateful to have had time with the boys at home, she found it enormously challenging to know how to move forward. Her priorities had changed and she was no longer willing to return to a working week of 40+ hours. At the same time, she didn’t really know what she wanted and her confidence was at an all-time low. Coaching was instrumental in Tina finding her new direction. She discovered that it is an amazing tool to help get clarity around what is really important and what is not. It gave her the confidence to embrace who she is and the courage to offer help to others who are in a similar situation.
Boost your family’s diet with local fruit and veg Seasonal eating can be very beneficial to your budget and the environment. Local food is abundant and costs less to distribute which makes it less expensive. It’s a more sustainable way of eating, requiring less artificial input like heating, lighting, pesticides and fertilisers. Community Veg Bags is a non-profit making group in Warwick who provides bags of affordable local seasonal vegetables and fruit. Each weekly bag has at least potatoes, carrots, onions, 2 vegetables and 2 fruits. You can buy a large bag for £4.50, a small one for £3, and half a dozen eggs for £1. All of these are ordered in advance by visiting one of the collection centres or using the online shop. There is no contract, so you can buy bags as and when it suits your family. Give it a try! www.communityvegbags.org
Tina’s business ‘Your New Wings – Life Coaching’ is aimed at helping mums to deal with the same uncertainties she faced, giving them the time and space to work out what they would like in the next phase of their lives. Coaching is available individually or as part of a group. Tina has also designed a special 8-week programme ‘The Revitalise Programme’ especially tailored to help mums not simply to return to work - although that may be a component of it for some people - but to find something for themselves outside the family that will allow them to feel fulfilled. The programme is currently running in Kenilworth and Tina hopes to also offer it in Warwick and Stratfordupon-Avon beginning in early June. For more information or to register your interest, please contact Tina: M: 07932 441450 E: tina@yournewwings.com www.yournewwings.com

Warwickshire will welcome the world’s top women cyclists this June as the county hosts the Aviva Women’s Tour for the first time ever on Thursday 16 June. It is hoped that the Tour will encourage more girls into cycling and sport in general. The world’s top racers will race the 140-kilometre stage through the heart of the county, passing through Atherstone, Kenilworth, Warwick, Shipston-on-Stour and ending in Stratford-upon-Avon. Warwickshire County Council has teamed up with expert riders to offer Pedal and Picnic days in Warwick in the run up to the big day and hopes to get more families involved in cycling. Meet at Shire Hall at 12.30pm on Thursday 12 May and Thursday 9 June for a 40 minute family ride around Warwick led by a qualified leader, before taking in a picnic stop at St Nicholas Park. All riders will be given a free goody bag. Get strolling for Walk to School Week Say goodbye to traffic jams and lack of parking spaces and walk to school as part of the annual Walk to School week, running from 16 to 22 May. Organised by Living Streets and part of National Walking Month in May, it challenges schools and their pupils to walk to school more during the week. This year’s theme is ‘Strider’s Walk in the Wild’ with the walking habits and natural environments of different animal species being explored each day. Tuesday 17 May is ‘Happy Shoesday’ and children and teachers can wear the shoes that make them the happiest and donate £1. Money raised will go to Living Streets for work with schools, disability groups and local communities, and campaigning work to make UK streets safer for everyone.
Calling all aspiring young writers!
Schools interested in getting involved should contact Living Streets for more information about available resources on 020 7456 9794 or for more information about National Walking Month, visit www.livingstreets.org.uk/nwm
Is your child excellent with words? Do they like telling stories? Or do you want to encourage their creativity? Well it’s time for them to put pen to paper because the National Young Writers’ Awards have returned for the eighth year! Judged by Lauren Child, best-selling author of the Charlie & Lola, Clarice Bean and Ruby Redfort books, and organised by tuition provider Explore Learning, this year’s theme is ‘The MashUp’ where children are asked to write a 500 word story of a ‘mash-up’ of two genres. Whether it’s an alien landing his spaceship in Victorian England or a Disney princess as a zombie slayer, there is huge scope to let their imaginations run wild! The competition is free to enter and your child could win a fabulous family trip to Disneyland Paris and £500 worth of books for their school. Open to children aged 14 and under, the closing date is 7 June. Children can fill out an application form at their local Explore Learning Centre or enter online at www.explorelearning.co.uk/ youngwriters

King Henry VIII School retains inspection crown King Henry VIII School’s reputation as one of the finest schools in the West Midlands has recently been confirmed by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. Following a week-long inspection in February, both the Senior and Prep schools have been honoured with the maximum possible total of eight ‘Excellent’ awards each. Senior School Head Jason Slack commented, “We are delighted to achieve eight excellent awards in this inspection. The school also received a full set of ‘excellents’ in our previous inspection, so this shows what a consistently strong and well-rounded education we provide. It is a tribute to the superb staff and wonderful students that the visiting inspectors spoke so highly of the school in their report. No other independent school in the area is able to boast the same record and I am very proud of our whole community.”
Both the Prep and Senior schools were subjected to a demanding inspection which is similar to the Ofsted inspections seen in the state sector. The schools were assessed under categories such as ‘the quality of pupils’ achievements and learning’, ‘the quality of the pupils’ personal development’ and ‘the contribution of teaching’. In every heading the schools were awarded the top grade possible. Gillian Bowser, Head of King Henry VIII Prep School, acknowledged the role of the teachers during inspection week. “It can be nerve-wracking to unexpectedly have a very important visitor in a class of young pupils but our staff rose to the challenge superbly. The inspectors saw during their visit what a typical day is like at our school. The pupils are diverse, friendly, bright and inquisitive and that really comes across in the glowing inspection report.”

After four days inspecting and reporting on the compliance of the Education Regulations, Arnold Lodge School in Leamington Spa is delighted to have achieved an overall ‘Excellent’ result. How to organise summer holiday childcare By Claire Muffett-Reece Looking after your children during the summer holidays is no easy feat for any working parent, with many mums and dads resorting to booking their annual leave separately to ensure someone keeps an eye on the children. However, juggling work and childcare over the summer holidays needn’t be an issue with our handy guide. Holiday play schemes/summer camps This form of holiday daycare is often based on themes, such as multisports, dance and drama or science and usually boasts a number of fun activities to appeal to children. Run privately or by your local council, this competitively priced option can be booked on a daily or weekly basis and is a fun-filled way for your little one to meet new friends and gain skills in the process. Relatives Turn to close family members to see if anyone could help. Your parents or in-laws are ideal, as most will revel in the chance to bond with - and spoil - their grandchildren. Just remember to stick to set times and help by sending your children with pocket money towards that trip to the zoo. It might be free for you, but it won’t be free for them!
North Leamington School, Leamington Spa CV32 6RD Weds 1-Fri 3 June, 10am-4pm (extended care available) Multi Sports Academy offers a huge range of sports, physical activities and alternative activities such as dodgeball, ultimate frisbee and archery. Plus Gym Beatz Academy, an exciting programme for children who want to participate in gymnastics sessions regardless of skill or experience. Children aged 4 are eligible for half day Multi Sports Academy only. Summer Holiday Camps start Monday 25 July. T: 01926 298178 www.aspire-sports.co.uk
School mums Have a chat with mums at the school gates to see if they can help. Make sure you only ask people you feel confident leaving your child with, and take a box of chocolates over at the end of the day as a thank you. Most mums might instead prefer a ‘swap’ in return, where they look after your child one day and you look after theirs another.
Playbox Theatre
Childminders Childminders are a great option over the holidays, with many parents sticking to the same person they normally use during term time. Ask friends who they recommend, or look online for Ofsted-registered carers. Just remember to ask what stipulations they have, such as whether you still pay if your child is sick or you go away.
Motionhouse Half Term Intensives
Working from home Explain your childcare struggle to your boss as soon as possible in the hope they might be sympathetic to your situation. If they agree to you working from home, be sure to complete all your tasks on time - regardless of any distractions! Not getting your job done will soon be picked up by management, meaning you’ll be refused if you ever broach the subject again!
